We can barely believe it’s mid summer already and our dreams of holidaying abroad are pretty much done and dusted. Well that may not be exactly true because some lucky members of our team are actually out and about travelling through concrete jungles to the actual exotic kind. We, the miserable other half, toil away bringing you yet another fantastic issue, finding at least some solace in the monsoon ka mazaydaar mausam. This week we start with a counter Trend Alert; a list of 5 trends we wish would already die! In Weekend Scouts we have the very lovely Shahrose Chaudri of Rosé, an innovative upcoming brand of doodled and hand-painted denim. In The Beauty Edit, MUA Ayesha Babar suggests a few updates on summer makeup looks and Insha Bukhari of Hunger and Hawhai takes us on a nostalgic revisit to old eateries of Lahore. For all this and much more events and happenings around town, get the pages rolling! Happy Weekending! Sincerely, Team Weekend

OLD SHOULDER TOPS: We think everyone can agree that cold shoulder tops were fun when they first came on the fashion scene. We even enjoyed the fact that they were referred to as ‘cold shoulder’ because you know, you’re showing off your shoulders and they could be well, cold not to mention how it referred to the expression

W

july 16, 2017 | 34

e’re as fun and fashionable as the next person but there are some trends that we just can’t get behind. These are the 6 fashion trends that everyone needs to seriously consider saying goodbye to!

O

VER RIPPED JEANS: Who doesn’t love a pair of ripped jeans that scream ‘90s grunge, right? But ripped doesn’t translate to wearing a pair that’s barely being held together by the seams because a feral

used to express dismissal. But it has got downright ridiculous now—every item of upper body clothing cannot be made into a cold shoulder blouse. You only have to see our latest summer lawn campaigns and people wearing lawn to know what we’re talking about—a cold shoulder kameez is an unnecessary waste of good lawn and it looks silly, we don’t care how much you like it.

Trends That Need To Die

Rottweiler gnawed at the denim. And you know what the worst part about wearing over-ripped denim? Your feet always inadvertently get caught in the gaping holes, only to rip the jeans further till you are just left with the waistband. That’s money down the drain!

B

ODYSUITS: The only time we want to see a bodysuit is if it is on Tina Turner and it is the ‘80s, or if you’re Beyonce okay?

C

ROP TOP: Why do crop tops still exist? Why are “fashion insiders” trying to make crop tops happen? This isn’t 2001 and no one is starring in an Olsen Twins movie or is the backup dancer for Britney, crop tops don’t need to exist.

july 16, 2017 | 35

EEK-A-BOO CLOTHING: There is a time and place for sheer clothing and it is even better when it’s underlined with something else. But if it’s sheer with nothing underneath showing your nips to the world, it quickly enters tacky territory. The same goes for showing the classy ‘underboob’ in public— leave something to the imagination, ladies!

Weekend Scouts Shahrose chaudri Entrepreneur at

Rosé @roseeofficiel

july 16, 2017 | 50

Shahrose is the creative brains behind upcoming denim brand Rose Officiel that introduces an innovative concept of wearing your heart on your jeans! She paints and doodles expressive words and phrases on denim to reflect the person you are and truly lets your jeans do the talking!

What is the philosophy behind Rosé? It’s not just a brand of painted jeans; it’s an educational art, a statement, a sign of expression. This brand has a story and isn’t something that developed over night since it’s a combination of a passion for expressive language and global fashion. The idea is to make your jeans personal and special, every piece means something to the owner. From historical quotes to song lyrics, to your name in different languages, whatever is painted on these jeans stems from an individual creative voice.

What was the very first piece you created? My very first piece was inspired by the quote by Fredrick Nietzsche, “And those who were seen dancing, were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.”

weekend | FASHion

How would you describe your personal style? My personal style has evolved over the years but I’ve always been trendy and bold with an interest in pieces that stand out. I like to retain a certain elegance and sophistication even if I’m super street-styled and sporty. When it comes to fashion I do purchase signature and classic everyday pieces, but I like to pull off exclusive pieces and love mixing and matching two different kinds of looks, for example track pants with a sequins bomber jacket.

july 16, 2017 | 51

What inspired you to start this innovative brand of denim? When I was enrolled at Kings College London, there was a time when I did not own a pair of jeans; whereas my sister was always crazy for denim. I decided to do something special for her and get us both the same jacket with “double trouble” painted at the back. One of my friends suggested that I could easily execute this idea myself since I love custom statement pieces. My friend and I painted a jacket and then I told her I’m going to paint my jeans; she seemed very skeptical but I decided to write my favourite quote on my jeans and I left my house wearing them. It was a matter of few hours to realize how many people were going crazy over how cool my jeans looked. I eventually decided to pursue it as a business when I moved back to Pakistan in November 2016. I would often wear my jeans and friends would ask me to paint jeans for them. As it gradually started becoming popular, I began receiving orders and decided it was time to go commercial.

What influenced the name? Rosé stems from my very own name Shahrose (my nickname is “Rose” (with some French inspiration by rapper Rick Ross who often states “rozay thats my nickname”.

Name a few people who inspire you Those who are ambitious, hard working and not afraid to introduce new concepts; including artists like Andy Warhol. Through the years I’ve been a huge fan of Jackie Kennedy and Coco Chanel’s style as I love those who dress for building their personality. I also have always been fond of the flappers from the 1920s, with their glamorous aesthetic and perfect hair. These days I find the new Gucci Designer, Trouble Andrew’s ideas to match mine.

What is your favourite piece to date? Definitely the first piece I created, its what made Rose Officiel and changed how I approached denim for the rest of my life.

Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a pair of jeans for? Who would it be and why? Right now I have to say someone like Drake because of how significant the lyrics of his raps are. Other than that, I would love to see Trump in Jeans that say “Make America Great Again!” How would you describe your creative process? It’s actually a very educating process as I am fond of pop culture, mafia culture, history and politics. Therefore, when I come across something that interests me and relates to me, I have to understand it and make a statement out of it. When someone else places an order without providing something specific, I observe their personality and tell them to provide a theme and then patiently research for a quote or several quotes which may seem to be of interest and appropriate.

Where do you see your brand in the next five years? Well if it’s not seen all over the world, competing against new brands who’ve taken the same idea.. I’ve done something wrong.

july 16, 2017 | 53

In what way do you think fashion in Pakistan needs to evolve? I am impressed by the amount of scope available in Pakistan. I have to say marketing and fashion is on the right track and there is still much room for development. It’s nice to see that the culture has become quiet accepting and people have put themselves in a place where they want to try different things rather than just sticking to the norm with the same style and labels. However, at the same time I have noticed that there is still a lack of accepting looks which aren’t part of the norm and that will only change once people understand what fashion and style is an expression of who “YOU” are and not what “OTHERS” are! This idea of judging others based on how they dress needs to GO!

weekend | FASHion

If you could only wear one pair of jeans your entire life, what type would they be and what would they say? I haven’t yet created this pair, but it’s been on my list since a long time. They would probably be high-waisted flared cropped jeans that consist of a line from a poem I wrote myself back when I was 19. The poem is slightly lengthy but the line would be “We become the energy we’re surrounded by.” I believe in always staying around positive people and things because exposure has great effects and influences how we feel.

emember Polka Parlor? I do, but not because the ice cream was OMG. Those back-lit photo-boards mounted high behind the counters featured my naughtiest frozen dairy dreams — a perfect Peach Melba, a beautiful banana split, a classic triple-scoop sundae topped with a cloud of whipped cream and a neon red maraschino cherry, and my holy grail, a huge watermelon, hollowed, carved, and filled with a million tiny scoops of ice cream — all a bunch of cruel lies. Dude, my frickin’ fantasy monster-melon wasn’t even on the menu! Still, mention the name and I can’t help smiling, because, really, disappointing dessert was but a trivial detail, an annoying distraction, if you will, in a day that included a trip to the holy land of extreme 90’s-kid fun, Amusement Arcade! You know the one I’m talking about — that musty basement that offered a grand total of 3 thrilling fun-time activities, including the iconic heartthumping dodge-em cars with dubious brakes and long, bendy antennas that crackled and sparked against that wirecage roofing. That lingering smell of hot metal was oddly satisfying. The mechanical horserace felt as intense as the Kentucky Derby, beads of sweat forming on our foreheads as we screamed our lungs sore until the shrill buzzer finally ended the game. A mix of excited shrieks and disappointed groans always followed. And the pièce de résistance — the mildly shady and definitely moldy room known as the “Shooting Gallery.” Nobody ever won the game, but we all played anyway, just to get the creepy old cowboy to half-rise out of his creaky rocking chair and lift his lame shotgun to squirt water at us.

here myths, legends, and drama were born, this place wasn’t just a restaurant— it was the definition of an era. You didn’t go to Zouk. You went “Zouking’ — to a land where cK One and Polo Sport hung thick in the air and hormones raged while Truly, Madly, Deeply and BSB blared at a deafening volume, speaking straight from your soul to bae’s. This was where you nibbled on the planet’s BEST salsa and chips before platter after platter of Chicken Chili Mint, Thai Special Noodles, and Cashew Chicken arrived at your crammed table. And, of course, this was also where the parking lot doubled as a lunchtime entertainment arena, showcasing lame groups of badmaash boys getting into even lamer phaddas, while the rest of us munched on our meals and lived our best lives. Ah, the perfect Saturday afternoons.

iterally, eat ANY of Gino’s pizzas and it’ll take you straight back to every cool kid’s childhood birthday or last-day-of-school party you’ve ever been to. Yes, the dough is still thick and bread-y and the sauce is still oddly sweet and, no, there’s no epic stringiness to the cheese — it sits in one waxy, congealed sheet on the top, just like always — and it’s still so, so delicious. Nothing beats kick-butt kiddie party food.

The rest were initiated by pelting one another with scraps of napkins scrawled with phone numbers, while pretending to casually eat that Copper Chicken and those too-good-to-be-real battered fries. They handed out chopsticks, for crying out loud! But everyone knows it was one humble, motley soup that put this place on the map — the legendary 19B. Sadly, Hsin Kuang closed down recently, but the good news is, our favorite soup lives on in the city’s hearts and minds and on the menu of almost every Chinese place in town. Brand New Summer update your go-to makeup looks this summer

We are (hopefully!) mid-way through the summer and it is time for an update on our go to makeup. The days may be long and sweltering but that should not be holding us back from indulging in the latest beauty and hair trends.

Lower lashes

july 16, 2017 | 70

We have all been obsessing over falsies for our top lashes for so long that our bottom lashes ought to be feeling quite left out. Well, now is the time to show them some love and be on trend at the same time. So go ahead, and coat those lower lashes with Maybelline’s Great Lash mascara (perfect bristles to coat without clumping!)

Ayesha Babar @ayeshababarmakeupstudio

Brows

It’s time to say goodbye to those tweezers! Keep the brows fuller this season - that’s less pain at the salon for you as well as perfectly framed eyes. Fill in the gaps with Luscious’s brow kit and apply clear brow gel to seal the deal. If you suffer from sparse brows, apply a thin coat of castor oil (easily available at your local grocery store) on the brows before going to bed every night. You will start noticing a difference in a month.

Curly hair

Curly and wavy hair are making a strong comeback so please, avoid those straighteners. If you are naturally blessed with curls, then this is the time to make mousse your best friend. Work the product through the lengths and use a diffuser if you are in a rush. Otherwise, if you have time on your side, air drying is the way to go.

Add that colour

Braids

Make your hair game stronger by adding braids to your hairstyle. Whether it is corn braids on one side, with the other in loose waves, accessorized crown braids or even the classic french braid, you can’t go wrong! Choose the style that suits your face shape the most and you are all set to get through these long summer days, one braid at a time!

july 16, 2017 | 71

What is summer makeup without a good dose of colour? While our skin tones might not provide the ideal canvas for those yellow eyelids that we have been seeing on the runway, we can definitely try more subtle ways of adding colour. Try coloured mascara (Inglot has some interesting options) or blue eyeliner to add some fun to your look.
