In conversation with
Fatima Khan & Saweela khan of Aura Aura Crafts is a local company founded in 2010 by Fatima Khan and Saweela Khan as a project to promote a natural way of living. The company mainly produces chemicalfree organic skin, hair and body products made from the highest quality natural ingredients that are also exquisitely packaged to meet international standards. This week we met up with the enterprising mother daughter duo behind this venture for a conversation on brand philosophy, inspirations and challenges of running an organically sourced business.
FEBRUARy 26, 2017 | 64
Tell us a bit about yourself. How and when did you decide to pursue Aura as a business enterprise?
Aura started off as a hobby and turned into a business venture when the demand for more products from our friends and acquaintances got out of hand. We started with our range of 100% natural and handmade soaps and now we have about 36 products and our own facility in Multan Road, Lahore.
What is the philosophy behind your brand? High quality, honest products for affordable prices without the use of toxins and chemicals. We want to
A huge huge huge role because in Pakistan, people tend to compare local brands with interntional ones. Our goal is to make the same people appreciate and trust Aura (a local brand) just as much as an international brand, and so far we’re doing well!
What sort of aesthetic are you inclined towards in terms of packaging and marketing your brand?
We like a sleek, clean look with a pop of color. We are very particular about good quality packaging, so we will continue to improve it even further in the future.
Do you have any educational background in the field?
Our research and development team include a pharmacist and highly qualified hakeem saab, both of whom have tons of educational background on natural skin and hare care ingredients. Having ties with a pharmaceutical business gives us an edge in maintaining our high manufacturing standards.
Name a few of your inspirations
Good old desi totkas, Ayurvedic practice and brands like Forest Essentials and Rocky Mountain Soap Company that are committed to high quality, natural products.
weekend | conversation
How big of a role does branding and packaging play in the marketability of your products?
What are some of your personal favorite products? Hair Rescue Oil, Revive Face Oil, Eye Therapy Balm and Activated Charcoal Bar
What makes Aura unique and different from other similar brands in the market?
Besides being extremely involved in the research and production of our products, what makes us different from similar brands in the market is that Aura does NOT produce or sell whitening/ fairness products. Why? We think the obsession with being fair-skinned in Pakistan has manifested into a form of bullying, impacting a large number of impressionable kids who grow up with a fear of being anything other than fair. We believe it is our responsibility as an ethicallyaware skin care brand to help shatter these standards of beauty and promote the love for NATURAL beauty – dark, tan and fair!
How do you source ingredients for your products? What is the most challenging aspect of creating organically sourced products? Since the natural skincare industry is very new in Pakistan, it is very difficult to source certified natural ingredients – ingredients that are free from bacteria and fungus. Because of the limited source of certified ingredients in Pakistan, we at Aura, select and prepare ingredients in our own lab, which go through thorough lab testing to pass the standards of certification. We also source some

ingredients like essential oils from Brazil and Germany.
How have consumers responded to your venture?
We have received an overwhelming response since day one and hope to make Aura a household name ;)
What has been the most memorable experience in your journey so far?
FEBRUARy 26, 2017 | 66
Every step in a growing company is memorable, but if we had to choose one, it would be the time a customer suffering from eczema came up to us at the Haryali Market just to tell us how Aura products have made a huge difference in her life, when nothing else worked – not even her doctor’s prescriptions.
What are your future plans for Aura? Where do you see the brand in the next five years?
We hope to have our own flagship store, have our products in every big retail store across Pakistan and have an international
presence! Most importantly, we hope to continue researching and producing highly effective and beneficial skin and hair care products.

Weekend Scouts Ehsan Memon Artist, Lahore @ehsanmemon786
What does the word Art mean to you? Art is a difficult term to describe, the meaning of art is more subjective than objective. It varies with the perception and understanding of the audience. I see art as a journey that unravels itself every step of the way. From the inception of this universe the concept to create was conceived, hence we humans createthings to express ourselves and represent our response towards nature. An artist experiences different levels of expressional control that takes one from realism to abstraction and this makes art a way of life I guess.
weekend | FASHion What was the very first piece you created? A portrait of Benazir Bhutto at an event held by Mehran Arts Council Larkana, on the first death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto.
Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work? What is your work influenced by?
Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for? Who would it be and why? I belong to a small village in Larkana, Sindh. I lost both my parents at an early age and my life is colored with distress, detachment, blessing, surprise and several such emotions. My work represents my reaction to the society and enviorment.
januyray 29, 2017 | 59
What kind of art do you most identify with and why? Any art that has the power to move really resonates with me. Any content that is realistic and the expression of the art jolts your imagination is worthy of praise
Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work? When I displayed my thesis work at NCA, a woman came and she was very disturbed by something and wanted to have a word with me. I went to her and she said “ Yehkya tum nay rizqkibehurmatiki ha, it was only when I told her that it was paint on fiberglass, she scratched one piece to believe me and then embraced me and gave blessings. Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for? Who would it be and why? I want to create some work based on social divide. Work that represents the less fortunate, I feel a sense a belonging towards them.
Name a few artists who inspire you. Zhang Xiaogang, NasreenMohamedi, Toba Khedoori, Cornelia Parker, VijaCelmins
How would you describe your pieces? I made a drawing on a random car screen covered with dust How would you describe your pieces? Different or even opposite versions of reality surface with the passage of time.
In what way do you think Art in Pakistan should evolve? Art in Pakistan has been evolving to become bold, mature and diversified and I think it is on the right path. What is your ultimate vision as an artist? Art becomes an undeniable reality.
