THE BEAUTY EDIT

We woke up like this! BEAUTY PRODUCTS

TEAM WEEKEND CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT When we’re not busy attending launches or stuffing our faces with juicy burgers on deadline night, we love trying out new beauty products, always on the lookout for that cult product that will change our lives. And with winter right around the corner we thought now was the best time to re-think our beauty routine and to try something new. So we polled Weekend editors on the products they turn to when skin gets parched and the holy-grail products they just cannot live without.

Rameeza Majid Nizami

december 04, 2016 | 64

Publishing Editor “I have a very busy schedule most days and while I’d like to spend more time on my beauty routine in the mornings, I just don’t have the time. But I do love a simple feline flick (nothing dramatic) and a bright lip that makes me look like I’ve made the effort without actually spending hours doing my face. I prefer felt-tip liquid eyeliners to a gel eyeliner because it has lasting power and it’s easy to apply. The Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner is waterproof so it survives Pakistani heat, and the ultra-fine tip delivers a laser-sharp precision for a defined line. I’ve used up at lest five of these pens, it’s just that good and cheap! When it comes to a bright lip, I will always opt for MAC’s ‘So Chaud’ which is a warm red that goes really well with my skin-tone and adds a real pop of colour to any look.” OOO

Nur Zehra Qadri Creative Editor “My ride or die products has to be the Luscious Brow Luxe Tool Kit because I just cannot leave the house without having my brows in place. Mine are naturally quite full and thick but I do like to fill in any sparse areas and set them because they can get a bit unruly. In my opinion, wellgroomed brows really frame the face so I always make sure mine are. You will also always find a tin of Vaseline petroleum jelly lip balm on me (especially in dry winters!) because even if I’m not wearing a lip colour or tint (my go-to these days is Del Rio by Mac), I like my lips to look nourished. Vaseline is also amazing around the cuticles when they tend to get dry in the colder months. ” OOO

Managing Editor “No matter what makeup look I go for, whether it’s a dramatic smokey eye or I just roll out of bed (as Managing Editor there are days like this) I make sure I wear a lip colour. I have loved the Benefit Bene Tint for years because you can use it as lip and cheek colour. My lips are naturally quite pigmented so the Bene Tint just makes them look like ‘my lips but better’. I rotate between the Bene Tint and ‘Bond Girl’ by Charlotte Tilbury which is a great mediumdark rosy plum with warm undertones and a satin finish. It’s from Tilbury’s Matte Revolution line (don’t let the name fool you) which has a hydrating formula compared to the mattes of rival brands. Still on the Charlotte Tilbury bandwagon, the brand’s Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder (medium 02 for me) is definitely my holy grail product. I use it everyday as a setting powder and it keeps whatever base I have on stay intact and look perfect.” OOO

Amal Khan Editor At Large “I like to keep it simple when it comes to my makeup. Heavy foundations tend to congest my skin so I prefer a lighter formula that still provides a decent bit of coverage. The Dior Nude formula (my shade is 002) feels hydrating, provides a sheer to buildable coverage and it doesn’t oxidise either which I’ve found a problem with some high-end foundations. It’s my go-to base all year round. I can get away with wearing a light layer of foundation (when I feel like I need the flawless coverage) and my favourite lipstick which is MAC’s ‘Captive’. You’ll find at least 4 tubes of this on me at any given time—I think I have one in every bag I carry. It’s a plum shade which I just dab onto my lips for colour and if I’m pinched for time, I’ll dab some onto my cheeks too—I love multi-purpose products.” OOO

Minahil Batool Sherazi “I usually go bare-faced everyday because I’m an 80-year old granny who stays at home and bakes. But when I do go out, I make sure I always wear a sunscreen—I’ve tried a fair few, they all feel thick and sticky till I tried the Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ which is a light and quick-absorbing formula. On special occasions that warrant a full face of makeup, I use the Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation which has fast become my favourite foundation and I know I’ll be re-purchasing this. A Beauty Blender sponge and the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder are my base favourites that I can always trust to give a flawless complexion. I haven’t come across a lip colour that I consider my holy grail product because I am a big lipstick hoarder but the one colour I do love is MAC’s ‘Boldly Bare’ lip pencil which is the perfect nude for me right now. I’m sure all these favourites will change because I am always on the lookout for the next cult product!” OOO

Maham Naqshband Travel Correspondent “I’m a mum to a very energetic toddler so I’m running after him from the moment he gets up to the moment he goes to sleep. If I manage to wear a slick of mascara in between, I’m happy. But on days where I have more time or my son is down for a nap, the one product I reach for time and time again is a powder blush called ‘Coral Rose’ by Golden Rose. I’ve used up quite a few of these, having discovered how amazing it when I was in my teens when I started experimenting with makeup. It’s surprisingly pigmented for a very reasonably priced product and adds a really healthy glow to the face.” OOO

Farah Vayani Karachi Correspondent “I always feel that if you look well-rested then you can pull off any look. Sadly there are days when the bags under my eyes are not Chanel and I have to pull out all the stops and use a combination of concealers plus eye drops to look awake. I like mixing the lighter shades from the Nabila No Makeup Palette with an Inglot Under-Eye Concealer. This combination provides coverage and adds brightness to my under-eye area making me look more awake at 8 in the morning. Other than that I like to keep things pretty minimal on a daily basis and I’ll swipe MAC’s ‘Please Me’ on the lips to look more put together.” OOO

Fatima Ameer Limited editiion december 04, 2016||08 66

Social Correspondent “There’s only one product I swear by and that’s which is a rich but quick-absorbing facial night cream I have been using for years. It hydrates my skin leaving my skin softer and super smooth in the morning. I even use it on my kids sometimes!” OOO

Khizra Waqar Editorial Assistant “My everyday base is the Bare Minerals Ready Foundation that I’ve been using for a couple of years and I find it’s the perfect one for my skin. I firmly believe that if it ‘ain’t broke don’t fix it’ so even though there may be better foundations out there, I love this one. As a university student I don’t have the time to spend a lot of time doing my makeup so this Bare Minerals one is quick to apply and provides decent coverage too without looking like I’ve applied makeup. I have recently become obsessed with the Kylie Lip Kit in ‘True Brown K’ so that has been my favourite product lately—I’ll wear it till I run out of it!” OOO

This festive season save the drama for your sleeves and let them do the talking! Ruffled, mutton, bell, pirate inspired, long, big, oversized—basically anything and everything that screams statement sleeves has crystallised as a defining trend in the fashion world. They’re bigger — figuratively and literally — than ever before. Valentino’s African themed collection had some highly ornate sleeves that featured feathers and colourful ethnic beading, and Gucci’s Alessandro Michele used a trompe l’oeil design to give his sleeves a cute new spin. However, most of the

the sleeves! designers amped up the volume of their sleeves and opted to go big, with balloon sleeves popping up at Fendi, Miu Miu and Versace. Our favourite bloggers, street style stars and style icons have embraced this trend with open arms and can’t seem to get enough of it! Some of our go-to high-street brands such as Zara, H&M, Topshop,COS and Storets have also come up with their own affordable renditions of the statement sleeve. We personally are HUGE fans of the exaggerated sleeve, as it adds a lot of character and oomph to any ensemble.Statement sleeves are not only super chic, but they also give the illusion of a tiny waist, which means this look is flattering on just about every body type. Watch out ladies because the only thing you’re officially allowed to exaggerate about, are your sleeves!!

Hi, I’m Maryam Mahmood and I’m going to use this space to share my ex perience in Lisbon, Portugal whe re I attended the L’Oréal Business Forum 2016! So here’s my scoop!

DECEMBER 04, 2016 | 74

O

ne of the perks of being a lifestyle journalist is getting the chance to travel to fun exotic locales on of icial business. So you can imagine my excitement when invited to attend this year’s L’Oreal Professional Business Forum, held at the epically grand Meo Arena in Lisbon, Portugal. An annual event presented by a veritable Who’s Who of international hairdressers, the L’Oreal Professional Business Forum is a unique opportunity to discover the latest hair trends and techniques. Having arrived in sunny Lisbon on an afternoon in late October, I was immediately struck by the sheer presence of the Pakistani delegation. Headed by the L’Oreal team under

the guidance of General Manager Salman Amjad, together with Commercial Director Hassan Murad and Education Manager Tanzeela Hashwani, the delegation included the very best of the nation’s hairstyling talent. There was the lovely Rubina Hasan of SplitEnds, Syeda Ghazia of Annie’s Alle’Nora Signature Salon, Blush Salon and Spa’s Hina Shah Farid, Asma T from Asma T. Salon, Faiza Abbas from Faiza’s Salon, Meher Najeeb, the ever-beautiful supermodel turned salon-owner Nadia Hussain, Henna Zul iqar, Amina Zahoor, the lovely Juju Haider from Toni&Guy North, and of course, our very own hair and styling dynasty, Shammal Qureshi of Tony & Guy North, accompanied by his gorgeous wife Redah Misbah of Depilex fame, and his mother, Karachi’s legendary Peng. Despite wielding a mean hairdryer, I soon discovered that when it comes to hair, I’m but a mere novice. The event proved to be a crash course in everything hairrelated: more than just classes on how to cut hair, there were incredible talks and sessions on hairstyling in this new Digital Era and lessons on how to create unique salon experiences. Renowned international speaker and consultant Chris Perks spoke of how salons could use digital to enhance the overall salon experience, while also leveraging it to scale their businesses; another session saw Gavin Hoare, Salon Manager from Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, reveal how to create the ultimate emotive client experience in-salon. Over the next three days, over 2,000 hairdressers from 50 countries across the

globe dazzled and regaled us audience members. This year’s line-up included Jennifer Macdougall, Jo Blackwell-Preston and Heath Grout from the USA, Harumi Iwakami at Kakimoto Arms from Japan, Jack Howard at Paul Edmond’s from the UK, Bertram K from Austria, Carlos Gago, Arnauld Jambart, Claudio Pacheco, Carlos Queiros, Sonia Silva & Rita Azevedo from Portugal, Dessange team from France, Chahong Ardor from Korea, Matthew Collins & Crystal Brown from Canada, and Brooks & Brooks from the UK. Of course the trip was not just limited to hair, and fellow partner-in-crime (the lovely Anusha Bawani from Sunday Magazine) and I made sure to explore Lisbon’s nooks and crannies. Set by a bay along the Atlantic coast, Lisbon is a treasure trove of European culture and history. Anusha and I found ourselves wandering through old cobblestoned streets, lingering by shop windows and stopping to admire the old city’s pastel-coloured buildings or chat with the entertaining street vendors. Walking along the crowded, colourful streets, I could not help but feel myself falling in love!

WEEKEND EATS AT KOEL CAFE DECEMBER 04, 2016 | 80

KARACHI

As a Lahori visiting Karachi for ten days (for only the third time ever) I was slightly yearning for the greenery of my home city. Given my need for tranquility and calm in the hustle and bustle of Khi-town, to say I stumbled across just the right restaurant for lunch is an understatement. Tucked away behind an unimposing entrance on E Street, off 26th Street in Karachi, the Koel Cafe and adjoining gallery are the brainchild of artist-cum-designer turned entrepreneur Noorjehan Bilgrami. One of the founders of the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (as well as its irst Executive Director), Noorjehan irst established Koel in the late 70s as a workshop that pioneered the revival of hand-block-printed fabrics in Pakistan. Since then, the brand has grown to become synonymous with hand-printed

fabrics, as well as an avante garde approach to art and food. Nestled amongst other eateries, Cafe Koel is a beautiful oasis of zen. Walking through intricately carved old wooden doors, the entrance opens into a serene open air courtyard where sunbeams ilter through leaves to give the area a dreamy ambience. The stripped wooden seating, indoor plants and antique detailing around the space lend Cafe Koel an ethereal and extremely peaceful aura. The Cafe offers both indoor and outdoor seating – and while the decor could be called Spartan, I prefer to think of it as rustic, with white wooden chairs and tables. The weather on the day I visited was beautiful; a soft breeze rustling the leaves of the trees overhead, so my friends and I chose to

weekend | FOOD not disappoint. The Artichoke and Spinach dip was the clear winner, words defy the perfection of this dish and this alone, if for no other reason, justi ies a trip to Koel Cafe. It was perfectly cheesy and the taste of both main ingredients was prominent without being overwhelming – this dish was a delight for the palate and a hit for all of us. In fact, even as I write about it, I ind myself craving this moreish appetizer. For mains we opted for the dahi bharay, paneer tikka and ish (sole) in lemon butter sauce. While my companions favoured the creamy, light and luffy dahi bharay loating in a bowl of herb-infused yoghurt, I couldn’t get enough of the extremely well-cooked sole. The ish was light, perfectly seasoned and beautifully lakey (which is a miracle as Pakistanis can tend to err on the side of overcooking seafood.) The paneer tikka provided a nice contrast to the other more saucey dishes and was soon polished off. We washed all of this down with their Shikanjabeen which was infused with mint, lemon and crushed ice – a really refreshing drink with thankfully just the right amount of sweetness. By this point we were all too stuffed to order dessert, but opted for coffee instead, and oh boy were we glad we did! Being huge coffee drinkers we found these to be some of the best cappuccinos we have had in Pakistan to date – optimally foamy without the big air bubbles inexpertly frothed milk tends to have. Koel is more than just a cafe; it is a concept space with a designer clothing boutique, art gallery and cafe amalgamated into one.
