We sat with Muhammad Nasrullah Michel Ansari, an official Zumba trainer with international specialization. Read through the story of how Zumba was founded as well as how Nasrullah’s journey came about struggling to bring Zumba to Pakistan. Plus we get the answers to some of your fitness queries by the man himself, so start reading! How did your journey begin? My journey began in Lahore 2008, back when I used to teach a fitness class. I was looking for a change; I searched for fitness activities that involved music and I came across a video of Zumba on youtube. From then on my interest started to develop as I was intrigued to know more about this different yet interesting form of activity. I read about it, called them and signed up for Zumba classes abroad. Despite facing some difficulties along the way, I slowly started to attend one class to the next in different countries. With growing interest and training experience, it became
my aim to bring Zumba to Pakistan. After about 6 to 7 training sessions, I then had enough licences to officially bring Zumba to Pakistan. Of course, there were moments when I was questioned; I was asked what benefit the Pakistani society would be getting if we introduce Zumba to Pakistan. I told them, with unfortunate circumstances happening in the country all the time; we did not have a good reputation in the world. I believe with Zumba, we are bringing something healthy and positive to the society which will then change the reputation we have. It will show the world that we are a peace loving nation.
I began teaching Zumba here in 2012 and started working with ATV to further promote Zumba. What is your fitness philosophy? Fitness is not a job nor is it work. I believe fitness is a fun activity, do it with love and positivity. We even teach you to smile in our Zumba classes! It is so important to be happy while you workout. What are your workout routines like? I prepare my choreography at home and then go teach it, which is pretty much my workout. In short; I work out around 3 to 4 times a week at the very least. This includes the classes I give as well as the preparation I do for

from other countries yet the biggest motivation for me was my own country; the fact that I could successfully launch this in my country, because Zumba is all about happiness and a healthy lifestyle. I feel like I was born with a purpose, and this is my purpose. What is the biggest fitness misconception in your opinion? People think that rigorous activities aren’t safe and cause injuries because of a few rare cases. Another misconception is that there have been a few fake Zumba classes going around which caused some people issues and then they took that as a negative image for Zumba as a whole. What is your favourite quote or mantra? “You’ll live once, take
care of yourself”. What is the one diet discipline that you swear by? Eat whatever you want, just listen to your senses inside; whether you’re over eating, or not eating something good, don’t ignore it. Any advice for people who are starting out on a fitness journey? Workout does not necessarily mean hitting the gym, any physical activity such as sports can be considered a workout. Just remember one thing; never think about what others may think of you. Do not feel insecure and don’t think about any age or gender factor. Just do as you please and dismiss all negative thoughts. What is the most common reason people fail to achieve their goals? They think they’re not seeing results too soon into their fitness journey. Often when people are about to reach progression, they give up.

them at home. When was your “Aha!” moment? When you felt like you were successful at what you do? There are two moments that I can recall as being my Aha moments. First was when at my very first Zumba event in 2012. The crowd was huge which consisted of people from all ages, and although they did not know much about Zumba, they were really feeling the music and truly enjoying it. Second moment was when I was conducting a class of 1434 students in 2013. After the class was over, it was how the students ran towards me with so much love & joy to thank me was when I felt like I was doing something right. A was a true moment of pride.
