This mothers day our favourite yummy mummies share their trials, tribulations, and hidden treasures of motherhood wisdom

How do you juggle both home and work? I work in the mornings when my son is at school and then not more than a few hours once he’s back. One piece advice you would give to working mothers. I can’t really give advice to working mothers since everyone has their own circumstances. It’s all about time management for me. When I’m home I switch off from work and I try not to attend work related phone calls when I’m with my son. Do you have different standards for your body after having kids. My standards have lowered but it shouldn’t be like that. I know I should aim for a healthier lifestyle. Can’t blame my kid for that :) Of all the things you’ve learnt form your mother, what stands out the most for you? It’s important to retain a little part of your like just for yourself. My mother and I both find satisfaction in working. I respect my mother more because of that and hopefully I’m also setting an example for my son.

How do you juggle both home and work? It’s quite the balancing act! Time management and prioritising is key. I make sure I’m there for the important stuff at home and at work. One piece advice you would give to working mothers. I often see working moms striving for perfection. My advice is to not be so hard on yourself and realise that we all struggle. Also, working moms should strongly support each other. Do you have different standards for your body after having kids. Definitely! My approach to nutrition is very different now. In an effort to nourish your child with the healthiest food options makes you take a hard look at your own diet. Of all the things you’ve learnt form your mother, what stands out the most for you? My mom was wonderful! She always encouraged and indulged my quirkiness and creativity. I try to do the same with my daughter, rather than pushing her to fit a mold, I encourage her individuality

Creative head Cross Stitch How do you juggle both home and @crossstitch-official work? Great question haha! Well I guess every single day is a struggle to strike a perfect balance but I always know that if it’s ever between work and kids my kids are above everything else in the world so there’s no compromise there. One piece advice you would give to working mothers. You make sacrifices as a working mother but you really find yourself and your soul when you are one-so keep at it! Do you have different standards for your body after having kids. Yes most definitely-the first thing I’m ready to sacrifice when it comes to a decision is my work out which I feel horrible about! Of all the things you’ve learnt form your mother, what stands out the most for you? My mom was a fierce mom. She tried to keep us grounded and humble and used to focus a lot on discipline which I really respect her for and try to bring about the same environment for my kids.

Mishal Asad

Owner at Shazreh Khalid Events @zandsevents

Maheen Ghani Taseer How do you juggle both home and work? Well I make sure my mornings are always with Serena. She’s my number one priority and then I leave her with my mother while im at work. Its important for me that Serena is taken care of while I work so that I can focus better and not worry. In the evening my husband and I split duties. So Im happy I have such a great support system. One piece advice you would give to working mothers. Organise your day before hand. Its amazing how much time management

can help you. Also, use the support you get. You cant possibly do everything on you own. Do you have different standards for your body after having kids. I don’t honestly! Im not pushing myself but its been easy so far and I’m fitting into my pre pregnancy jeans so I guess thats a good thing;) Of all the things you’ve learnt form your mother, what stands out the most for you? Just being there and giving all the love and support you can give. All kids truly need is love. I had the best childhood and Ive learnt it all from my mother.

Shazreh Khalid How do you juggle both home and work? It does get challenging at times and sometimes I feel there aren’t enough hours in the day; however, I’m very lucky to have a very supportive husband who is also a hands on father. He helps carry the load when things get too busy. One piece advice you would give to working mothers. Don’t feel guilty for your achievements and your hard work! Your kids will look at you as an inspiration and as a role model to excel in life. You are showing them it’s possible to have both, a career and a happy family life. Of all the things you’ve learnt form your mother, what stands out the most for you? My mom taught all three of us to be strong, independent and focused individuals. However, more than that she instilled in me the importance of having a big heart and being kind. She taught by example and that is what I try to take forward every day and teach my daughter as well.

How do you juggle both home and work? It just comes naturally to me. My work is quite stressful, doing smallest of home chores sometimes gives me so much happiness, sanity and pleasure! Time management is the key, if you can master it, everything will be easy breezy! One piece advice you would give to working mothers. Peace out, dont panic! Working moms are often found guilty of ignoring children unintentionally. Dont overthink, your career is important for your child’s aspirations and future. Do you have different standards for your body after having kids. One thing that I have realized after having Zaviyar is that one must listen to their body. I dont diet, if I am tired, I eat and fuel up to feel good and I am not guilty of it. You only get one life so eat if that makes you happy and stop fretting about it. Of all the things you’ve learnt form your mother, what stands out the most for you? My mom is very altruistic, she would always be very positive and content with whatever life had to offer! I am very much like her. I hate pretense and l prefer experiences over possessions. That’s my one quality Rehan is so proud of :) haha! Uzma Abbas interiors & furniture

How do you juggle both home and work? Handling home, Aydin and work requires me to very organised. So I make to-do lists and breathe through the day. One piece advice you would give to working mothers. Stop being so hard on yourselves and never feel guilty. EVER. Salina Cosmetics, co owner Do you have different of Yoga X & co founder of standards for your body after The Ultimate Detox having kids. OH absolutely, I’m not so hard on myself anymore. Actually I’m not hard on myself at all now. I’ve learnt to honour myself and my body. So if my body is craving extra carbs I’ll go ahead. Rather be a happy mom than a hangry mom. Of all the things you’ve learnt form your mother, what stands out the most for you? “Always keep your grace under pressure” and always to teach your children to respect people over things. Values

One piece advice you would give to working mothers. Be sure to spend quality time with the kids even if it’s an hour. Have meals together, bring them to your workplace sometimes so they know what you do. Do you have different standards for your body after having kids. Yes, try and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Of all the things you’ve learnt form your mother, what stands out the most for you? Keep the conversation channel open, never lie in front of your children about anything. That teaches them lying is OK. It’s ok to make mistakes, own upto them! It will only make you a better person

Sehar Ahmad How do you juggle both home and work? I use set schedules and prioritize time with my kids and my husband. During working hours they are at school and work respectively. So that’s when I prioritize work. When they come home then obviously I put on my mom/wife hat. One piece advice you would give to working mothers. I Don’t! Hahaha...Just kidding. Rimmel’s Style EASTERN ELEGANCE

Rimmel and Ravale are wearing saaris designed by their mother, Asma Mohydin

Rimmel’s Style Statement

I’m always a fan of monochromatic looks - leading to a lot of black, white and beige in my closet. I tend to always wear at least one baggy item, and you can normally find me in ripped jeans or button-down shirts. Not a fan of patterns but will never say no to chunky necklaces or rings. I like playing around with high-waisted pants, crop-tops (normally repurposed sari blouses) and layering.

Rimmel’s Take on Styling Ravale

Ravale has always based her style on preppy looks and tailored sharp cuts. I thought it would be fun to combine that overall ethos with the loose fall of a satin saari. I took the monochromatic look a step further with the wine-colored sari that when draped right looks like a dress for a day or night even. The Amber Sami necklace blings it up just right.

G r e a t EXPECTATIONS

It’s popping babies everywhere! So many of my friends are expecting that it almost makes me want to take the plunge myself (again!) Even though no feeling in the world remotely compares to the magic your very own cuddly marshmallow stirs in your heart, the process of making it reach your arms is (to say the least) hard. To be more precise, pregnancy is hard. So is childbirth. So is taking care of your baby for at least three years (or more). Don’t get me wrong. This is not me trying to persuade you not to have babies. On the contrary, no matter how hard your pregnancy is, it is more than worth it. There’s no surprise why mothers having been through all that misery knowingly go back to it again and again. So coming back to pregnancy, the first challenge here is (you guessed it) weight gain. No matter how ecstatic you are after seeing those two red strips appear on your pregnancy test, life will get even with you sooner than you think. Even when everyone around you is telling you that no one gains much weight in the first trimester, your weighing machine is telling you another story. And don’t even get me started on the mirror. When you feel all bloated and flabby very early on you start questioning your judgement of wanting to get pregnant at this point in time. (We all know that the party of the year is coming up and so is your first cousins’ wedding) Friends telling you that you’re not showing at all makes you want

By Maryam Hammad

No matter how ecstatic you are after seeing those two red strips appear on your pregnancy test, life will get even with you sooner than you think. Even when everyone around you is telling you that no one gains much weight in the first trimester, your weighing machine is telling you another story. And don’t even get me started on the mirror. to cry even though they mean it as a compliment. A little note for all the friends of pregnant women out there: no matter how gracefully she’s carrying herself at any time in her pregnancy or how skinny her legs look, we all have some full support minimizer bras and open trouser buttons under that slimming black top. I know that everybody’s telling you to not worry about your looks for a while and just eat for two (never eat for two btw, your baby is the size of a pea who doesn’t need a chocolate sundae with every meal) It’s every girls innate desire to look as good as she can, and with the level of perfection everyone

you have gotten yourself into, in which you are seemingly alone, your husband is free to go out and about without a plastic vomit bag and devour all that biryani that you can’t stand the smell of. So a little something for any of the husbands reading this, even though u might think that you did nothing to warrant her wrath, try to be nice for a while, swallow that retort, love instead, it’s your baby too. So for all my preggo friends who are going through mood swings, depression, nausea, backache, weight gain, society pressures, everyone telling you what to do or don’t do, being irrationally scared about the well being of the baby inside you, chin up, no matter how you go about this challenging journey, you will get through this; stronger, happier, better and most importantly, a mother; ready to take on the world with a little comrade beside you, you are a rockstar! The content of this article is not intended as medical advice and should not be construed as such.

For all those lovely ladies who are eating for two, look on the bright side, this is the only time of your life when you can enjoy guilt free eating, so pile those pounds on and we’ll worry about shedding them when the time comes ;). You have to do whatever works for you. Don’t let society tell you what you ‘should’ look like at this time. Whatever makes you happy, because that’s one of the most important things here, your baby can feel your emotions, and stress can affect the fetus adversely, if that frapaccino with extra whipped cream makes you forget your troubles, by all means, go for it! Which brings me to mood swings. All my life I thought I was in control of my emotions and PMS was just a term that existed in biology books...until I got married. Every time I would have a disagreement with my husband he would ask me what stage of my cycle I’m on and blame my erratic behavior (what about his erratic behavior, huh?) on PMS. So hoping that he never reads this feature, im going to (regrettably) admit that hormonal imbalance is indeed a thing. There are times when you’re over sensitive or low or depressed for no reason at all (and you can do absolutely nothing about it). And anybody who’s ever been pregnant would agree too well with me. You feel teary in the beginning, irritated with everyone and everything, and regretting the situation

Viva L’Italia I

t is said that some of the best memories with family are made outside the homes we inhabit. It was with this in mind that I decided to surprise my mother with a trip to Italy (a vacation she had been talking about but not taken for seven years.) I preplanned and booked everything; tickets, hotels, sightseeing spots, food reservations etc and before I knew it we reached Viva-laItalia in all its glory, history and culture.

“Y ou may have the universe if I may have Italy” Giuseppe Verdi

weekend | fashion From the minute we arrived in the beautiful Firenze, it was mama’s aim to immerse herself in its culture, Renaissance art and architecture. We started off our first day by breezing down the Ponte Vecchio immersing ourselves in what I call a painting frozen in time. From going to quaint little restaurants including Tredici Gobbi and Armando (both of which I recommend highly) and sampling delicious local cuisine like salmon carpaccio, napoli pizzas and bresaola, to engrossing ourselves in the artistic rigour of the Uffizi; we were eager to partake in every aspect of the quintessential Italian experience. I was grateful to not only have been able to take my amazing mom on her dream vacation, but also to have the opportunity to share amazing moments with her. Harry’s Bar (where I took a snapshot of her ruminating on the beauty around us) and the Venci Gelataria where we ate three scoops of marscapone icecream are just two (among many) of the beautiful memories I have of our trip. We also ventured to the outskirts of Florence to the famous Outlet Mall which houses many a high end brand and indulged in some serious shopping!

It didn’t end in Florence as we ventured out into Roma, a city that is arguably as important to history as my mother is to me! No instagram photos or accounts from friends who had already been there however could have prepared us for the beauty of Rome. Mama and I decided from the get go to make it our mission to roam Rome (haha!) From the Vatican Museum (an art lover’s dream), to the Cistine Chapel (which can almost be considered one of the wonders of the world), to what can only be described as the most more-ish sourdough we

have ever eaten; we found every aspect of this once bustling metropolis incredibly charming. Our photos in front of the Fontana Di Trevi caputure a beautiful mother son memory that I will cherish forever. On our final day in Rome, as we walked through the Colosseum towards the Pantheon the significance of this trip hit me. As much a metaphor for my incredibly close and beautiful bond with my mother, as it was a vacation, this was truly the trip of a lifetime. Perhaps thats what they call a Roman Holiday!

Dump the heavy full coverage mask-like foundations and say goodbye to contouring for now. Opt for a light as air tinted moisturizer or bb cream during the sweltering months of summer. Go for a fresh faced dewy look, it’ll make you look and feel better, lighter, younger!
