W’s ROVIN ell, what’s the use of W a pair of good eyes that never rove? Weekend’s been going through our fashion files for the week

Minahil Qasim

October 16, 2016 | 32

Zainab Malik This black embroidered, wrap around gets a double thumbs up from us. The cinched in belting draws attention to Zainab’s enviable frame, while the white pants elongate the limbs and keep the ensemble looking light and youthful.

Playing with textures, lengths and accessories, Minahil keeps the colour palette for her outfit simple! The monochrome scheme lends sophistication to an otherwise fun and trendy outfit. The deep red lippy tops off the look.

Zoi

Culottes can be tricky to pull off but these look lovely on Zoi! Another all white look which looks fresh and pulled together! Those caged sandals draw the eye in, and the sleek centre part keeps the look refined.

weekend | FASHION

ING eye and these are the people who caught our fancy for either their style, their courage or their star power. Well played!

Rehan Bashir

There’s something about Ma.. hira! Mahira is a best dressed list regular but she looks even more beautiful in this gold and white Ali Xeeshan jora. She carries the colour pop lip with panache and the accessories while traditionally heavy don’t detract from her stunning face.

Sehyr Saigol After what feels like seasons and seasons of print on print, tonal looks reigned supreme on the black carpet. This all white look is elegant and timeless. The subtly flared pants keep this look on trend, while Sehyr remains true to her classic aesthetic.

Candy pink done oh so right! Rehan is the picture of refinement in this beautifully cut piece, paired with traditional khussas. While the colour of this jacket is unarguably flamboyant, the simple cut and clever pairing with subtle trousers has ensured that Rehan looks far from try hard!

Flirty Florals Captivating colours and sophisticated cuts in a variety of pure fabrics lend an effortless elegance for the modern woman. The perfect medley of contemporary and traditional, these pieces are captivating equally for their craftsmanship and versatility.

The Reading Room

Book series: The Hannibal Lecter Trilogy by Thomas Harris

October 16, 2016 | 44

Review by Asmara Ahmed Qaisrani ( @TheDoctorReads) Like good black coffee, the perfectly good villain is a creature hard to define and even harder to find. Fortunately, in the hands of the good Dr Hannibal Lecter, we’re perfectly taken care of. For the purpose of this discussion, we’re going to forget the films and TV show: fans of horror are purists in matters of the heart and Dr Lecter is very, very close to our collective hearts. When you look at the books sequentially, there is a marked progression of Thomas Harris’s interest in Hannibal as a character. In ‘Red Dragon’ and ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, he’s more of an accessory villain in contrast to the more grotesque monsters which take centre-stage. He serves to put their crimes into context with his deceptively rational discourse with both heroes of the series, first, Will Graham, then, Clarice Starling. In ‘Hannibal’, Dr Lecter is given free reign to cavort across two continents in the pursuit of his prey and obsession-Clarice Starling. Mr Harris’s writing in this book is as close to perfection as you could possibly hope for, indeed, in its dark heart, the book is the finest example of what a refined horror novel can accomplish-- poetry, passion, pathos and finally, peace. For the good doctor, at least. So, Dr Lecter, Hannibal the Cannibal, provides context. But who provides context for the good doctor? Hannibal’s enduring power lies in the mystery that surrounds his personality and his almost vampiric demeanour. He’s a culinary genius, an exemplary physician, a mass murderer with a cultured taste for fine wines, and finally, a lover to Clarice Starling-- a polymath well-suited to the myriad faces

weekend | books

Favourite lines: “The most stable elements, Clarice, appear in the middle of the periodic table, roughly between iron and silver. Between iron and silver. I think that is appropriate for you.”

our Information Age lives force us to create. But where we stumble in our face-switching, Dr Lecter is smooth, as smooth as an electric eel sliding down his hapless victim’s throat. Our lives then, are the most fitting context for Dr Lecter. Mr Harris’s first job as a crime-scene reporter informs much of the narrative of the first and second books. His two villains are revealed to us chapter by chapter, slow insight by tortuous revelation, even then, we are moved more to pity them in spite of the horrors they commit. Evil, in Mr Harris’s novels, is more than ghosts in haunted homes, it is birthed in broken people, haunting the only places they have left to them-- the lonely recesses of their broken minds. In the third novel, where the villains are the bureaucratic ‘good guys’ of the FBI, Mr Harris shows how horror can also be banal, where office politics can hatch murder plots and the dishonourable discharge of honourable officers. Hannibal, as a character is like a really good bass guitar that’s initially humming in the background

but later forms the core of the entire song (example? We Are All Astronauts cover of The Mighty Rio Grande by This Will Destroy You). Only, ONLY, a writer of Thomas Harris’s narrative and stylistic brilliance could pull that off. Mr Harris’s rare power is perhaps best captured by his contemporary Stephen King: “a novelist whose work can be grasped entire not just by English department profs and tenure-bound grad students but by the humble folk who entertain themselves with novels on airplanes and in overcrowded waiting rooms. ” Mr Harris’s prose is surgical in its precision, haunted with poetry that forms from every image he carves. Like no other novelist perhaps, Mr Harris does not judge, only narrates. So even in the face of high horror, we are lulled by his smooth tone, immersed in this vision of mind palaces and past and present folding into themselves, an infinite loop of snakes swallowing their own tails. But trust me on this, after having read Mr Harris’s work, you will come away exhilarated. Like good, dark coffee, Mr Harris will not disappoint.

New Beauty Launches for Autumn

Apart from the very welcome influx of cooler weather and hot chocolate, one thing we really love about autumn is the release of new beauty products by our favourite brands. Brands up the ante every season much to the consumers’ delight and we literally cannot wait to get our hands on these beauties!

MAC x Selena Collection:

It’s been a while since we’ve been really excited about a MAC collection. Every time we visit a MAC counter there seems to be a new limited collection—hands covered in swatches, we leave overwhelmed and empty-handed. So when we heard about the upcoming MAC x Selena collection, we got excited! If you’re not familiar, the Selena in question is not of the Gomez variety but Selena Quintanilla, the Queen of Tejano Music who tragically died two decades ago (trivia: J.Lo played Selena in her biopic and got her big break from it). MAC has previously collaborated with Nasty Gal, Rihanna, The Rocky Horror Show and Disney amongst a few of its biggest collaborators so this twelve-piece collection with three lipsticks, five eyeshadows, a mascara, an eyeliner, a bronzer-blush duo and a powder blush brush is bound to deliver!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Master Palette by Mario:

Anastasia Beverly Hills Stick Foundation

Anastasia Beverly Hills has become a household name amongst celebs and plebs alike and are you really surprised? Everything the brand has released to date has been nothing less than stellar. That’s a massive achievement for any beauty brand let alone one that people have recently become aware of. The brand is making an entry into a whole new category (and our favourite one)—foundation and we have really high hopes for it. Stick foundations generally tend to be medium to full coverage and the ABH one is supposed to be highly pigmented (from all the Snapchat stories, it does look it), super build able and has a soft-matte finish which will leave the skin neither shiny or flat. It will be available in a whopping 28 shades (say wha) that ranges from the porcelain fair to six shades on the deeper end of the shade range. The foundation range also has three shades that are specifically made for countering and a yellow-based highlighting stick. Price wise it’s also supposed to be more reasonably priced compared to the brand’s other expensive products. Does this sound like a foundation that’s going to be sitting nicely on our vanities? Yep!

Depending on who you ask, the Kardashians are a lot of things: bronzed, voluptuous, trashy but we think they are savvy businesswomen before anything else and their makeup has always been perfection. That’s something we give them full credit for. Kim’s makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic has brought us contouring, baking, strobing through his work on the Kardashians and he has made their faces look SNATCHED every single time. Mario has held series of Master Classes where he’s taught aspiring makeup artists all his techniques, using his best model and walking/talking advertisement, Kim. But until now he had not released a beauty product of his own and after months of teasing on social media, Mario’s very first palette in collaboration with Anastasia Beverly Hills is to launch at the end of September on the brand’s website and early-mid October at other retailers. It’s a limited edition one that everyone will want to get their hands on because if past experience with ABH eyeshadows has taught us anything, it’s that they are the best eyeshadows on the market. The palette comprises of 12 eyeshadows that are a neutral-eyeshadow lover’s dream come true (nine shimmer shades and three matte ones). The colours range from neutral browns, coppers, golds with a khaki green, glittery black and rose gold. If you can get your hands on this one, then definitely do.

L’Oréal Pure Clay Masks

Limited editiion | 08

If you didn’t already know, we’re big fans of masking here at Weekend HQ—it’s what our Friday nights are made of. But we’ve rarely come across good drugstore brand masks, we’re sure there must be some if not many but the ones we’ve used so far have been meh. So when we heard that one of our favourite drugstore brand has come out with three clay masks that do three different things to your skin—we were mega excited of course. There is the Pure Clay Purify Mask which has a creamy texture that works deep into the pores, leaving the skin purified and matte-looking without drying it out. Then there is the Pure Clay Detox Mask that has charcoal in it which acts like a magnet to draw out impurities. And finally we have the Pure Clay Glow Mask that has red algae extract which is known for its brightening properties. The beady lecture illuminates skin tone by exfoliating the skin’s surface. We think we will be purchasing all three when they are released!

Huda Beauty Rose Gold Palette:

We recently got our hands on the Huda Beauty liquid mattes after vowing that we wouldn’t fall for the hype—but alas, we did and we are so glad we did because they are the creamiest, softest, longlasting liquid lipsticks we’ve tried. But we’re not here to talk about the liquid mattes, we’re here to talk about the latest offering from Huda Katan that’s got social media buzzing like a beehive! The Rose Gold Eyeshadow Palette has 18 colours that include mattes, pearlised shades and 6 pure pigments. They are supposed to be texture shadows that have incredible pigmentation from all that we’ve seen on Huda’s Snapchat. We’ve yet to hear about a release date but when we do it’s definitely going in our basket!

Hello, guys! [just so you know it is taking a lot of patience to type like this because I am hyperventilating okay] so by now most of you must know about the dream-come-true Hogwarts Cafe which opened its gates for all the wizards, witches and Muggles last week and today I am writing this to share my experience with all of you.

October 16, 2016 | 52

SO OMG YES. This was one of the best day of my life because I finally got to know how it [might] feel to be at Hogwarts, my ficitional home and the cafe is the proof that it has been created by probably the biggest potterheads in Pakistan! *tries not to squeal* So, starting from the entrance, you will get to see a wall which has been dedicated to Harry Potter and his firebolt! Then there is Platform 9 4/3 *tries not to scream* and everything which you need to leave for Hogwarts and it made me feel homesick OMG!

Look at the cafe look how it shines for you! *ColdPlay stuff* And then there is this wall where you can post your comments while leaving and I left a note too, I will talk about it in the end. So, yes then we went inside and I screamed!!! not really, omg, but I was like kind of trying not to jump and scare everyone away?!? Because, hey there fellow witches & wizards, the interior of the cafe is on fleek and it slays. unlike my photography skills From the themed tables to the gifs, from the frames to the brooms, wands and robes *tries not to go gaga and leave the article incomplete

weekend | food I can talk about the Cafe’s interior forever, also I could not capture the food area’s beauty even though I had my DSLR with me [yes, I am bragging, now what?] because I JUST COULD NOT STOP SHAKING WITH GLEE!!!! So, better luck next time!

That’s the biggest frame on the whole big wall BOO YAAH but yeah, one of them [the owners ] is Gryffindor and the other one is Hufflepuff, yeah Okay what ever Snape!!!! tries not to drool over Snape fails Then they have another wall which has been blessed with snippets from Daily Prophet!!! I took loads of pictures in front of it and OMG OMG OMG I LOVE IT!!!

er int s!

Now, now, let’s talk about food, shall we?!

October 16, 2016 | 53

And burgers? Also, they had this library-kind-of corner which won my bookish heart!!!! In the end, I had like to thank the creators of Hogwarts Cafe for bringing to our lives this beautiful place which feels like home and takes us to Hogwarts. This place is going to make you feel like a Wizard, I wish I didn’t have to leave the Slytherin robes behind. While wearing them I felt like I was in Hogwarts and all the interior encouraged the feelings and the Snape’s frame made me feel like he was somewhere there. sheds a tear Now, I shall say good-bye to you guys because I need to leave for Hogwarts in an hour (?!?!) and here is a picture of me leaving for Hogwarts and this is the most blurry picture in the history of Forever because I am Slytherin like that and also because there was no fellow Slytherin there so I also stole harry’s firebolt, I have it now and i am so going to win Quidditch!

I ordered Cappuccino, Hagrid’s rock cake and Pasta. My friends ordered Unicorn Blood [she became a unicorn after three hours], burgers and other stuff. The doneness of food forced me to give the Cafe’s chefs 100 points even though I am Snape’s fan was it a biased comment? The coffee has right amount of cream, coffee and hogwart-ness in it. Pasta’s on point taste made me fat with happiness.

Weekend Scouts Sana Saeed Artist Lahore

@sanasaeed29

SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 | 84

What does the word Art mean to you? Art is a diverse term and it’s hard to enclose it in words. For me there is no particular boundary of art, in fact I believe that every written text, every sound and visual falls within this term. Art does not only revolve around a well painted painting and a well crafted sculpture, it is something much more than visuals. Art is the best way for self expression and it comes with a lot of choices. What kind of art do you most identify with and why? I think painting and reading are two mediums which are close to me. From an early age I started painting, I was always so clear in the head that this is what I will do in my future. The desire to create something (but obviously you can’t actually create something which has already been created) and the journey you cover from a blank piece of paper to a painted visual is so satisfying. Secondly, reading also helps me a lot to strengthen my imagination.

What is your work influenced by? My work is inspired by classical music and poetry (specially Urdu). I studied Urdu Literature during my Intermediate program and it helped me develop my ideas and learn the language of metaphors. I want my art piece to work like a piece of poetry, which has different meanings to every person.

What was the very first piece you created? I started painting at a young age and i don’t actually remember the first piece, but i can recall some of my family portraits that I use to sketch in my childhood. How would you describe your pieces? My art pieces do not follow a single idea, every art piece has a different mood and sometimes even I don’t know why I am painting this, sometimes my painting turn out to be exactly what I want and sometimes the result is totally alien to me. I want each of my painting to have its own individual identity.

Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for? Who would it be and why? Umm… no i don’t think there is anyone for whom I would especially paint, I usually always paint for myself.

Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work? Well there are many (and not all of them are good). Honestly at one point it does not really matter what people think about your work but obviously the critical responses are very healthy; especially when you are working on the abstract side there is always someone who will come to you and say “ WHAT IS THIS?”

Name a few artists who inspire you. Lucien Freud, Damien Hirst, Frida Kahlo and Ustad Allah Bux. Also in Literature, I am inspired by Faiz, Ghalib and Manto.

In what way do you think Art in Pakistan should evolve? I think the basic problem with art in Pakistan is that people don’t realize how important art is and for this we have to make sure that art should reach the public. Exhibitions should be held in public places so that people know what art is and who are the people practicing art. The galleries in Pakistan are very few and have a very limited audience and this reality needs to be changed.

What is your ultimate vision as an artist? There comes a time when we (the artists) became the reflection of our artwork, it becomes a give and take process. Art clearly shows, what we are, what we believe and how we perceive the world. I am glad to have a medium through which i can express myself.

What is your philosophy on fitness? Do it right, or don’t do it at all. We believe fitness has to be done with excellence while following scientific methods to achieving our client’s goals.

What are your workout routines like? Our workout routines incorporate a blend of weight training and cardiovascular endurance movements with the purpose of swift and healthy fat loss. The program design ensures that by the end of the program the clients are healthier, fitter, toned, and all around stronger thanks to the workouts. What’s your favourite quote or mantra? “Sore today, stronger tomorrow”. Goes not only with fitness but all walks of life. The harder we work today the stronger we come out tomorrow. We really try to push this mantra in during our workouts.

The ultimate fat burning food? Black coffee. If taken at the right times it can be a great tool

to aid in the speed of fat loss while still being beneficial for the body. Diet discipline (one diet rule you swear by). Eating a small meal every 3 hours. Smaller meals are easier to digest and keeps metabolism peaking throughout the day.

Does detox water really work? Of course! Detox juice is loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial properties that you wouldn’t ordinarily get in your regular diet. It’s also great for the digestive tract and stomach. How many cheat meals can one really have? One cheat meal a week.

The best way to reduce face fat? (especially double chin) It’s not possible to choose where to lose fat (face fat). The only way to reduce face fat would be reduce overall fat on your

body, and that would be to follow a balanced workout regime and a healthy calorie deficit meal plan.

Protein shakes: what’s the hype? Should we be having them? Absolutely. Protein shakes are vital for post-workout recovery. An individual who is following a challenging workout regimen needs nutrients that ordinary people might not need, and this is where protein supplements help out.

If they were to reduce their fat and continue working out, they would have a much more natural and toned body.

Do I have to leave ‘Chawal & Roti’? Not at all. Besides sweets and fats, we don’t believe in cutting out foods. Chawal and roti are both allowed in our meal plans, just in smaller amounts. How often should we be weighing ourselves? Once a week is ideal to check how your weight is going. However, weighing scales don’t show the whole picture so often times it

Can’t win ‘em all

Limited October editiion 16, 2016 | 08| 66

Most of us know what it feels like to look back on some of our #Throwback fashion moments with fondness and others with sheer horror (*what was I thinking?!) In fact, some old outfits have us trying to hide the evidence or at the very least our embarrassed faces. The fact that even fashionistas are not immune to #FashionFails brings the rest of us mere mortals some solace! This week, we ask style maven

Fatima Ameer to share some of her looks from both sides of the spectrum.

I believe in dressing up even for a nice casual outdoor coffee with friends! I prefer flats over heels for coffees and hi teas and prefer wearing my hair down for that casual chic look ! Koton is my favourite spot to shop for casual dresses as i absolutely love the flowy and breezy feel the outfits have! I keep the accessories minimal !

My absolute favourite piece of clothing so far, with a hint of lace and sequins to add more versatility to the outfit. Paired it with and silver sequin clutch by benjamin for a perfect dinner date

Can’t get enough of these Zara jeans! For a casual lunch like to dress up denim and a little white tee. A pair of glittery Gucci shoes is a must to add up some feminine glam and these Chloe shades we all love these days!
