Weekend Scouts Hissan Khan and Fraz Si Entrepreneurs @hefclothing Two best friends, one dream

october 29, 2017 | 70

1. What inspired the start up of HeF as a concept and the name? F: We started HeF in 2016. We’ve been friends since childhood. Both of us have always been big on streetwear – everyday, comfy clothes that also look good. Streetwear culture is becoming huge all over the world but no one is really doing it in Karachi. We want to help drive the subculture forward in Pakistan. H: We wanted to introduce a culture we’ve seen grow first-hand – one that has literally gone from the ‘streets’ to high fashion. Many international streetwear brands get manufactured in Pakistan yet there has been no local streetwear brand with an international presence. F: HeF is just a combination of our names. And we like how it sounds.

4. Are T shirts the primary item? If yes, why? If not, what will you expand with? F: We’re starting off with tees. Tees are awesome. They’re comfortable and everyone should own at least one. A tee is a quintessential item for your closet. H: Like Fraz said, we’re focusing on making quality tees for now but we really feel the sky’s the limit for HeF as a brand.

5.Who/What are your inspirations? F: We get inspiration from everywhere and anywhere. I used to live in Toronto and Hissan used to live in LA so a lot of our ideas and inspirations come from streetwear and music that we experienced living abroad. H: The list is endless but at the core of it, we look for inspiration in our daily lives; simple but meaningful experiences that really go on to shape how we think and who we want to be.

weekend | Fashion

3. Why is it Karachi specific? H: Our logo is the teen talwar (three swords) so you can’t take Karachi out of HeF. We wear our city like a badge of honour, something we hope all Pakistanis do for their own hometowns. We grew up and met each other in Karachi - the city is the reason this project came about. F: We want people to know that we are Karachi AF and damn proud of it! But, at the same time,we are an inclusive brand. What we are striving to create here is a brand that not only Karachiites but all Pakistanis would be proud to rep anywhere in the world. We want the rest of the world to know how the City of Lights really vibes.

october 29, 2017 | 71

2. What is your brand philosophy? H: Fraz and I went into our professions (law and journalism, respectively) as strong believers in freedom of choice and expression – two rights most Pakistanis don’t fully realise in their lifetime. We want people, especially kids growing up in Pakistan, to really understand the power of these basic rights and fight for them in every sphere or I should say street. F: Our brand is all about freedom of expression and freedom of choice. We really want Pakistanis to reclaim their spaces and voices; to work together as one nation towards a more peaceful and progressive community.

weekend | Fashion

6. If there were 3 people, living or dead, who would you love to design a tshirt for & why? F: Tupac fo sho! He’s one of the GOATs (Greatest of All Time) and he was always shirtless! H: Yea Tupac is an OG . We would have also liked to have design for Muhammad Ali Jinnah just because he is the ultimate Pakistani style icon. And we’re also really vibing with Riz Ahmed. F: We would have loved to see Jinnah in a HeF Tee. And definitely Riz for making waves across the world and showing us (Pakistanis) in a light we’re rarely shown in.

october 29, 2017 | 72

7. New projects and surprises in store for buyers? H: At present, we’re working hard to develop our next line of products/collection. We want to come out with something that puts streetwear and HeF on the map. F: Keep a watch on our Instagram @hefclothing. And if you wanna hear some dirty beats, we have a weekly playlist up on our website: www.hefclothing.com/blogs/music.

THE DESIGNER’S VISION

SOUCHAJ

Mehak & Mehr partnered to start SOUCHAJ in June 2016 to create “pieces of art”, something that is clearly evident in the brand’s ensembles. The craftsmanship and techniques used in the creation of each outfit are extraordinary, hence the name SOUCHAJ, derived from two Punjabi words “soucha”-meaning pure and “chajj”meaning perfection and the love for finesse. Champs de Élan’s Bridal Collection 2017

october 29 2017 | 94

The inimitable Khadijah Shah of Élan celebrated bridal season with a solo show, ‘Champs de Patchouli’, Élan’s Bridal Collection 2017 in Lahore. Inspired by the courts of the Mughal era and the Versailles with strokes of French influence, Champs de Patchouli introduced ten distinctive designs featuring Élan’s signature and meticulous craftsmanship in unique colour palettes. The collection has a fresh take on classic cuts such as peshwas, angrakhas, lehengas and shararas. The fashion house paired these with printed kameezes with silver and gold 3D work. Embellishments consisted of pearls, gemstones, gota, naqshi, dabka and threadwork with flora and fauna motifs on nets, organzas and tissue; the collection was intricate, feminine and modern all at the same time. The evening was attended by celebrities, socialites and media personalities and was a night to remember. The show was conceptualised and managed by Shazreh Khalid and choreographed by Rehan Bashir.

The Reading Room The Surgeon by Salman Waqar Reviewed by Asmara A. Malik ( @TheDoctorReads)

October 29 , 2017 | 98

(The Surgeon is available at Amazon with shipping to Pakistan for $6.50)

T

here’s a quote by Anton Chekov that I’m particularly fond of using as an answer when people ask me that ghissa pitta question of ‘But you’re a doctor! Why do you write?!’: well, because, “Medicine is my lawful wife and Literature my mistress; when I get tired of one, I spend my night with the other.” So, for me, nothing brings more spontaneous joy than finding a similarly two-timing physician who takes equal joy in the written word. Contrary to popular belief, physicians aren’t just writers of amazing non-fiction (take a bow, Drs Kalanithi, Mukherjee and Gawande) – Michael Crichton was a graduate of Harvard Medical School. Will Dr Salman Waqar follow in Dr Crichton’s footsteps? Fingers firmly crossed. A nifty thriller, The Surgeon has an unrelenting pace from

and other questions? I hope so. Salman Waqar’s début novel is an interesting mix of plot and pace, one that sets him apart from many, many long-winded South Asian writers. The questions he raises are valid and timely. Here’s hoping for our very own surgical sleuth in the shape of Dr Danyal to continue his adventures in the not too distant future.

weekend | books

page 1-- characters are introduced and thrown helter-skelter into rapidly shifting sequences of events. It’s main character, Dr Danyal, is to surgery what Robert Langdon is to symbology. Except our desi Danyal is happily married but not averse to hunting down non-clinical criminals, all while managing to come home in time for dinner. Don’t get me wrong-- while the pace of the book might make some character agency seem two-dimensional, the bare bones of the plot are well worth your time. You may find yourself recalling ‘I, Robot’ at points, but the richly imagined world of the novel is a place that hearkens both to a placid past and the unrelenting advent of a furious future. There are points in the book that may stretch your suspension of disbelief but only for so long-Dr Waqar’s vision of the future of healthcare is both timely and based on well-thought out research. You can doubt the characters but never the world they inhabit. At a hundred odd pages, you can easily finish the book in a couple of afternoons but its real power comes from the questions it raises. In the age of augmented reality and powerful AI, do you really want to hand over the power of a physician to a machine? Will the Surgeon return to tackle these

Favourite lines: “The genie is already out of the bottle and there is no turning back. Humans now know that an artificial intelligence can be created. If we take their advice and clamp down on all research into this area, all that will happen is that someone somewhere else will make one. The threshold has been crossed and the discussion now needs to concentrate not on scaremongering, but how to evolve our thinking to the point that we can accept artificial intelligence systems as fellow citizens.”
