2018
To say that 2018 has been an uneventful year would be an understatement. It was a year the world regressed in terms of relations between states, it was also the year we lost some famous faces to ill health and suicide and plenty of celebrity weddings. Join us to take a look back at some of 2018’s biggest moments from around the world.
FORMER PM NAWAZ SHARIF, MARYAM NAWAZ, SAFDAR AWAN IMPRISONED for 10, 7 AND 1 YEARS RESPECTIVELY ON CONTROVERSIAL CORRUPTION CHARGES

After getting engaged in 2017, the much awaited Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took place in May, arguably the biggest ceremony of the year with 29 million viewers tuning in to watch it on tv. Celebrities including the Clooneys, the Beckhams, Elton John, Priyanka Chopra and Serena Williams were just some of the guests that were in attendance. Queen Elizabeth’s other grandchild Princess Eugenie (the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson) tied the knot with beau Jack Brookbank later in October in a slightly more low profile affair. The couple wed at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, the same venue that hosted Harry and Meghan earlier in the year.
In the American mid-term elections held in November, the world saw a historic win for women and minorities in America with voters sending the first LGBTQ, Native American and Muslim women to the halls of Congress and governor’s mansions. Democrat Sharice Davids became one of the first Native American women elected and Congress got two Muslim women serving—Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.

SAUDI DRIVING BAN LIFTED ON WOMEN
In June, Saudi women were officially allowed to get behind the wheel, after a decades-old driving ban was lifted. It was the only country left in the world where women could not drive and families had to hire chauffeurs for women.
secret in pop culture, three of the Kardashian-Jenner ladies gave birth to three baby girls. Kim Kardashian gave birth to Chicago West by surrogate, Kylie Jenner to Stormi Webster with beau Travis Scott and Khloe Kardashian to True Thompson amidst a cheating scandal with love rat Tristan Thompson.
Twelve members of the Thai Wild Boars youth soccer team and their coach entered the sprawling Tham Luang cave network on June 23, only to be trapped by rising flood waters. The boys were found in early July but jubilation was short lived as the rescue that would follow would be extremely risky and dangerous. The world watched with bated breath as a team of international cave diving experts led the mission to retrieve them, evacuating the boys one by one. The coach and the last of the group exited the cave on July 10 after nearly four weeks of being trapped. A real life miracle story for sure!

THE EXIT CALLED BREXIT
A referendum was held in July 2016 to decide whether the UK should leave or remain in the EU with leave winning by 51.9% to 48.1%. UK Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty in 2017, the treaty gives two sides two years to agree the terms of the split. The UK has till 29 March 2019 to leave the EU but a European court has ruled that the UK can decide to stop the process if it so wishes. It can also be extended if all 28 EU members agree and since it’s the law the UK is due to leave the EU in 2019 whether there is a deal or no deal. Stopping Brexit would require a change in the law in the UK.
Singer & actress Meesha Shafi’s sexual allegation against colleague Ali Zafar in April stirred up a storm in the Pakistani entertainment industry & beyond. TRISTAN THOMPSON CHEATS ON KHLOE KARDASHIAN
FRANKLIN D A H IE T RE Queen of Soul Aretha S
Franklin died on August 16 at the age of 76 after losing a battle with cancer. The singer was famous for huge hits such as Respect, Chain of Fools and A Natural Woman. Former US President Bill Clinton paid tribute at her finer saying she was “the voice of a generation, maybe the voice of a century”.
Two days before the birth of their daughter True Thompson on April 12, Tristan Thompson cheated on girlfriend Khloe Kardashian. Pictures surfaced of Thompson with an unidentified woman at his hotel in New York while Khloe was preparing to give birth in Cleveland. Soon after these photos, gossip site TMZ posted a video from the previous October which allegedly showed Thompson cheating on Khloe with two women in a club. The couple began dating while the basketball player’s ex-girlfriend of two yeas, model Jordan Craig was pregnant with his child. Thompson and Kardashian are still a couple and raising their daughter together.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA AND NICK JONAS ARE ENGAGED IN JULY AND MARRY IN DECEMBER
The unlikeliest couple to come out of 2017 was definitely Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas who shocked the world when they appeared together at the 2017 Met Gala. The two proved to the world they were serious about each other when Jonas shut down a Tiffany store and proposed to Chopra in July and the couple tied the knot in a lavish Jhodpur ceremony in December followed by multiple receptions in India and America.
Ariana Grande and SNL star Pete Davidson were “casually dating” it was reported and confirmed that the two stars were engaged to each other. But less than five months later, the couple had called it quits but we are grateful for “Thank U, Next” the hit song Grande released soon after the breakup.

On 2 October, a wellknown journalist and critic of the Saudi government Jamal Khashoggi walked into a consulate in Istanbul where he was last seen and murdered. Turkish officials said they had crucial evidence including gruesome audio recordings that the journalist was killed by a team of Saudi agents on the orders of the Saudi royal family. For decades, the journalist was close to the Saudi royal family and also served as an adviser to the government but fell out of favour and went into self-imposed exile in America in 2017. He wrote a monthly column for the Washington Post where he criticised the policies of Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, also known as MBS. For more than two weeks Saudi Arabia consistently denied any knowledge of Khashoggi’s disappearance but by mid-October in a change of tune, state television reported that the journalist had in fact been murdered in a rogue operation on the orders of an intelligence officer. The 59-year old’s body has not yet been found.

Ditch Huge wedding events Do Smaller intimate affairs We’re all for celebrating but festivities don’t need to be mega grand or go on forever to be beautiful & meaningful. It’s time for the end of OTT mega-weddings, (Priyanka & Nick Jonas, Deepika & Ranveer or Aiman Khan & Muneeb Butt, the Ambani wedding!) in favor of intimate smaller scale gatherings. Less stress, easier on the pockets & a much more low key and fun experience.
Ditch Vs Do
Out with the old, in with the new* Check out our guide to the trends to toss & those to carry you into 2019!

DITCH SOCIAL MEDIA CRUSADING DO GENUINE ACTIVISM While social media has the power to bring pertinent issues to the forefront, there’s a lot to be said for putting your money where your mouth is. So instead of engaging in comment wars under posts, let’s take our activism to the streets and work for the causes that are closest to our hearts.
While we’re all for taking care of your body, we think that fad diets are definitely unhealthy (and unsustainable) in the long term. So forget the Keto craze which prohibits carbs in favour of only protein & fats. Balance is key - ring in the new year by making sure you’re eating a balanced diet that includes all nutritional groups. And embrace any form of physical exercise that brings you joy.
weekend | FASHION
Ditch Keto Do Opt for a healthy balance
Ditch Instagram face Do The real you Now that we are all hyper aware of the detrimental effects caused by social media’s unrealistic beauty ideals, it is more essential than ever to ditch this faux perfection. So let’s stop with the FaceTune (is it really cool to not look like yourself?), heavily made up & contoured faces that only look good on camera and craaaazy photoshop. Real is always best.
Ditch Micro sunnies Do The classics
Ditch Mean girls club Do Be Kind 2018 saw a lot of public & private figures talking about mental health and bullying. It’s time we all practice what we preach so let’s all make it our New Years resolution to be more kind & empathetic towards everyone.
december 30, 2018 | 62
Too much of a good thing! We’ve had enough of seeing super impractical micro sunnies on literally everyone. It’s time to swap these out for some of the classics. Or at least let’s find some new shapes for 2019.
