Weekend Scout s Noormah Jamal Artist
@noormahjamal92
APRIL 7, 2019 | 54
What was the very first piece you created? Random story. My mother would get me Polly pocket toys as a kid. Which were miniature 1 inch dolls with a particular tiny themed set. I started losing the dolls but couldn’t convince her to buy me more. So I started making them out of plasticine and slowly started making the sets and moved on to making larger ones with Lego bricks being the walls of my little worlds.
What does art mean to you? Art is how I express myself. On any given day, any given mood I can translate it into my work. If you think about it, art is everywhere. In everything. So it’s hard to avoid it or to not be inspired or to see it everywhere.
What kind of art do you identify with and why? It’s strange when I was a student I was very critical of abstract art. Figurative was something that I found easy to read and could relate to. But with time all sorts of artworks have sparked something in me. Regardless of medium, style or technique.
weekend | Fashion
What kind of technique, medium, do you prefer to work with? I tend to dabble with a little bit of everything. Gouache is probably in my comfort zone because Miniature painting was my major in my bachelors. I have not stayed true to the miniature painting technique and have kind of evolved it into a style or process that I’m comfortable with though I still borrow elements from it here and there. Other than that I love the feel of clay while I work (incredibly soothing) and Love printmaking.
Where are your artworks available for sale and how can people contact you? My works are available at galleries when I have exhibitions. I update my instagram account @noormahjamal92 regularly and I can also be contacted there to check availability of any works that I might have.
If your pieces were a person how would you describe them? Probably that loner in a group of friends that you don’t notice at first glance. But upon getting to know them more you realize they are quirky and multi layered. They kind of talk in circles but what little you do grasp is probably something you can relate to.
APRIL 7, 2019 | 55
Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for?who and why? My mother is very critical of my work. So a few years back on her birthday I painted our dog Dixie for her who is like her fourth daughter. She has it framed over her bedside table to date.
weekend | Fashion
how did your interest in the field develop? Share a little bit about your background. I have always been artistically inclined. If it wasn’t cutting out Archie comics to make paper dolls it was me making 10 foot maps by gluing printing paper together. From a young age I’ve found creating things to be very meditative. During my A levels I flirted with the idea of pursuing a degree in psychology but when someone commented saying Art was a good hobby to have and not a career, I knew exactly then and there that Art was my future.
APRIL 7, 2019 | 56
What themes do you generally explore with your work? My work has always centered on the personal baggage that people carry. Wanting to define an individual and not let statistics be what defines them. How people view themselves in regard to how the world sees them. Recently I’ve been incorporating my heritage and culture as well. Trying to make visuals that are easy to read but hard to digest. Who/what is your work influenced by? My surroundings. The people. The places. I currently divide my time between three cities. And an artist is like a sponge. The stories I hear, the stories I narrate. How people react to them. Some of the people I meet live in a bubble. While others have been exposed to alarming circumstances at a very young age. Peshawar/Islamabad and Lahore being in the same country yet so entirely different. All these factors have heavily influenced my work.

This is the year when unconventional professions are no longer as taboo & Pakistani trailblazers are defying career gender norms to make their mark across industries! From incredible art direction to inspirational adventurers documenting Pakistan’s snow covered peaks, check out our list of the Desi’s breaking barriers across the country! The lesson to be learnt? Natasha Qizilbash @if.natcancook A full time mom, a housewife & self taught cook, Natasha has channeled her enthusiasm for cooking to make an insta feed which leaves us salivating! Unlike chefs of yesteryear whose creations serve to intimidate the less kitchen savvy amongst us, her insta ID “if nat can cook...so can you!!” is totally true! With easy to follow step by step guides, twists on traditional recipes & informative videos, she ensures that men & women alike are inspired to create fabulous dishes that friends & families can enjoy.
Zainab hashim
Following in the footsteps of other amazing female Pakistani pilots, Maryam has carried their torch even further! The first woman to navigate the challenging & oftentimes treacherous, low visibility IslambadGilgit flight route, she is a testament to how brave & capable women can be in all industries! Now we’re just hoping that our next trip to Gilgit will be with her in the cockpit.
Hashim Ali
@hashimali90 Hashim defies the traditional adage that aesthetes must be women! An out of the box thinking set-designer, he focuses on recreating imagery from different eras, fashion themes & constructing picture-perfect stage designs that look like dreams come to life. The magical narratives he helps to weave through his outstanding creations, showcase his vision as an imaginative storyteller. He is an inspiration to anyone who has been inhibited by gender normative career roles.
@zainabhashk Unlike other fashion bloggers this Islooite styles outfits that are simultaneously aspirational AND within reach! Instead of a feed filled with designer labels with hefty price tags, Zainab’s aesthetic incorporates small local labels that are put together & styled to perfection. She promotes Pakistani brands thereby providing a cool fashion platform to items that would otherwise go unseen. So if you’re looking for fashion inspo that isn’t run of the mill be sure to follow!
Faiza Saleem @faizasaleem90 If you’re in need of a good tummy aching laugh, Faiza has got you covered. With satirical standup routines that comment on the often absurd cultural norms we live with, she draws focus to heavy social subjects in a lighthearted way. In her own words, “it’s easier to make people laugh than to get them their fundamental rights.” More props to Faiza for bringing humor to serious situations & insisting on marching to the beat of her own drum.

Herboganics Extra Virgin Coconut Oil PKR 1220 Available at all leading supermarkets
¼ cup coconut oil 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons organic sugar, plus extra for dusting ½ cup popcorn kernels ½ teaspoon Himalayan salt 1 to 2 tablespoons cinnamon
Heat oil over medium-low heat with 3-4 kernels. When the oil and kernels begin to sizzle, add the remaining kernels and toss to coat. Once coated, sprinkle sugar on top and cover with a lid. Every few seconds shake the pot back and forth so that no kernels burn (give it a good shake!) Continue to do this through the popping. Once popping has slowed to no sounds, remove from heat, sprinkle with Himalayan salt, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, honey and extra sugar (if desired). Give it a good shake to coat with cinnamon (but make sure you’re doing this while it’s still hot!) This popcorn also keeps well in a plastic bag for a couple of days.
