Up Close: From the Editor
I learned more about sports in general on a three-day press trip last month than I have in a whole lifetime. Let’s face it. I was more into the performing arts scene with piano and guitar lessons during grade school. I was paying a lot more attention to diagraming sentences and imagining new characters for a stage play in high school. Attending football games was my outlet to gossiping with friends and watching the cute boys in the marching band rather than watching the game or keeping score. In fact, the only time I checked the scoreboard was at the end of the game for a report to parents whether our school won or not. So upon attending media day at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, I got a real good look at what I had missed earlier in life. I actually wanted to get out and try my hand at putting in their miniature golf course. This isn’t your normal cute putt-putt course with turning windmills or glow-in-the-dark lights, either. There are actually two signature 9-hole putting ranges designed by Pete and Alice Dye. The holes replicate some of the Dyes’ most famous course and hole designs. See page 40 for the whole story.

Stargazing
Much of Earth is losing its dark night skies to light pollution. Many Americans will never have a chance to see the Milky Way. Holiday River Expeditions Embraces the Dark Sky Movement With a Series of Raft and Mountain Bike Adventures Dedicated to Stargazing and Celestial Wonders SALT LAKE CITY – Once monthly from May through October Holiday River Expeditions (http:// www.bikeraft.com/) shares the mystery and romance of the Dark Sky with star-struck guests who are participating in one of this veteran travel company’s 2018 Stargazing adventures. “It’s easy to get excited about this special trip series. Seeing how it has deepened our guests’ understanding and our guides’ awareness of the night sky is reason enough to offer these trips. The inexplicable boundlessness you feel staring up at the stars is just a bonus,” said Lauren Wood, Holiday Trip Director. “Salt Lake City’s Clark Planetarium has been our partner in this popular program for three years. Their expert staff will join us for each stargazing -10- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ April, 2018
trip to help bring the sky to ‘ground level’ and explore some of humanity’s most timeless questions. And to further our commitment to the natural world, Holiday is now a partner in the International Dark Sky Association, the premier organization fighting for dark skies around the globe,” Wood explained. Tom Beckett, board chair of Clark Planetarium and part-time guide for Holiday River Expeditions adds, “Each night on these bike and river trips we will attempt to find and identify stars, constellations, planets, galaxies, nebulas, clusters and satellites. More importantly, we’ll use those objects to talk about the structure of our galaxy, the origin and future of the universe, and our place in the cosmos.” “Much of Earth is losing its dark night skies to light pollution and many Americans never have a chance to see the Milky Way,” shares Beckett. “However, the rivers we run, and the trails we bike are all remote and far from cities. They have some of the darkest night skies on the planet.” Departures ranging from three to eight days are filled with Holiday River’s signature activities:
whitewater rafting, hiking and mountain biking. A participation fee covers stargazing interpretation and equipment, guide fees, meals and more. The 2018 Stargazing Trips are: May 12-15, 2018 4-day White Rim Trail and Oct 3-5, 2018 3-day White Rim Trail -- Guests on these adventures will have access to binoculars and a telescope at night to view the heavens. This legendary mountain biking trip leads through Canyonlands National Park in Moab, UT, recently certified as a “Dark Sky Park” by the International Dark Sky Association. June 9-13, 2018 5-day Yampa River – In the heart of Dinosaur National Monument the Yampa River runs wild and free, unregulated by dams. Spring runoff in May and June offer exciting rapids by day and piercingly dark sky canopies by night. The focus is on whitewater rafting with exploratory side hikes to rock art, waterfalls and ancient sacred sites. The per person (minimum age 8) rate is $1,075. July 9-13, 2018 5-day Cataract Canyon -- Cataract Canyon, carved by the Colorado River, cuts through the heart of Canyonlands National Park. Days are spent luxuriating in the sunshine, exploring side canyons and facing some of the biggest whitewater rapids the river has to offer. Nights open up to whole new worlds as guests explore the Milky Way, see the Andromeda Galaxy, watch satellites and meteors, and learn constellations. The per person (minimum age 8) rate is $1,150. Aug 4-7, 2018 4-day Lodore Canyon -- This Whitewater river trip through Lodore Canyon peeks behind the scenes in Dinosaur National Monument, currently recognized by the National Park Service as a “Sanctuary of Natural Darkness.” This trip connects to ghosts of river runners and canyon dwellers of the past, with escapes into deep-red cliffs and exhilarating whitewater rapids. During the day guests float on the Green River through Whirlpool Canyon and at night peer into the Whirlpool Galaxy. The per person (minimum age 8) rate is $980.
Sept 9-16, 2018 8-day Extended Hiking & Rafting in Cataract Canyon – This extended 8-day float begins on the Green River as it meanders into the confluence with the Colorado River and then through the mighty whitewater rapids of Cataract Canyon in the soul of Canyonlands National Park. Hiking enthusiasts can anticipate hiking into the Maze District and the fanciful Dollhouse, enjoying the depths of Dark Canyon as well as the unforgettable rapid “cataracts” of Cataract Canyon. The per person (minimum age 12) rate is $1,595. Birmingham’s
mily Dickinson stated, “A little madness in the spring is wholesome even for the king.” With that thought in mind let’s visit some of Birmingham’s quirky attractions. For quirky, it’s hard to beat Vulcan standing high atop Red Mountain overlooking the city of Birmingham. Standing 56 feet tall and weighing 100,000 pounds, the Roman god of fire is the world’s largest cast iron statue. He is an appropriate guardian for a city that grew from the fact this is the only place in the world that has the three elements necessary to produce iron, coal, limestone and iron ore. Vulcan was created for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Giuseppie Moretti built the mold in a cathe-

dral in New Jersey because there was no place large enough in Alabama. He got it cast here in Alabama and then delivered to new Jersey but was still a month late for the fair so visitors got to see him put it together. You can go inside to the top of Vulcan and have a great overview of Birmingham. There is also an informative and fun museum. The museum tells in detail about putting Vulcan together and how it got placed where it is today. The museum also does a great job of telling Birmingham’s history. There is a huge art work on the wall showing all the things made from steel. It explains why Birmingham was named “The Magic City” because the industry caused an almost-instant huge city to develop from a tiny town.

Peanut Place is a landmark in Birmingham. It has been there for 110 years. John, the current owner, took over what was originally his grandfather’s business in the original Wholesale District. Cassimus showed us a photo of what Morris Avenue looked like in 1909. He described his earliest memories, “It was a street of aromas. There was coffee, peanuts and baked bread and there were horses too. Lots of smells on Morris Ave.” Peanut Place’s location, The John Hand Building, is the oldest merchant building in Birmingham. Cassimus showed us several antique roasters. One of the roasters is at least 110 years old. His grandfather bought it used. It still works. While we were visiting, there were two visitors; One an inquisitive pigeon who sampled the peanuts that had fallen on the floor without paying and the other a handicapped gentleman in a wheelchair who bought his stash of peanuts to sell to passerbys. Reed Books Museum of Fond Memories contains a collection of 50,000 books, magazines, newspapers and movie posters that owner Jim Reed had catalogued. He has another 250,000 additional titles that are not catalogued.
-14- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ April, 2018
You will be surprised at what you might find browsing there. One friend found a book with her last name in the title and it is an unusual name. Reed told us how he got into this store, “I had other careers and I finally realized my problem was bosses. So 37 years ago I don’t have any identified bosses.” He further explain he survived by “In never listened to advice.” His slogan is” The stubborn shall inherit the earth.” Reed sees this as his calling. He is an author and book collector. He sees book collectors as historians of the universe. He is an unusual character. Another interesting character is Joe Minter, who created Joe Minter’s African Village in America. He was described by one visitor as “That crazy artist who lives in the graveyard.” This is one of the strangest collections of folk art that I have ever seen. The art fill the entire side
yard at Joe Minter’s modest home on Nassau Street bordering a cemetery. Minter was originally a construction worker when he felt God spoke to him and told him to build folk art structures and to plant a garden of memory to recount the injustices suffered by African Americans in this land of the free. He did as he was told and has been building ever since. For lunch try something different. Saw Soul Kitchen will serve you Southern food surrounded by piggy paraphernalia. Mike Wilson, Owner of Saws BBQ, opened this one in May 2012. He wanted something a little different with popular southern food done a little differently. You’ll find things traditional things like Shrimp and Grits and Pulled Pork but many unusual ones like Fried Pickles and Pork and Greens. I tried the Sampler Plate. It had pulled pork, chicken wings and smoked chicken with a side of fried green tomatoes. Perfect and oh so filling. Birmingham Pedal Tour, founded by Clair and Jason Kobza, is a really unique take on visiting breweries or just touring around downtown. It has a built in designated driver. You hop on the pedal bus which can hold 14 people and the driver. Ten are pedaling seats (five per side), with a four-person bench at the back for those who want to just sit back and let the rest of the group pedal. You can book for a group and pick your destinations. We did three unique breweries on a Saturday night. I can still hear Jason calling out as we crossed intersections and drove uphill, “Pedal faster! Pedal faster!” Gib’s Place is as quirky as it gets and a perfect way to end your Saturday night. Henry Gibson has been voted an Alabama Blues Ambassador and was inducted into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame. He’s around 93 years old and until retirement he was a bluesman by night and a gravedigger by day. He has played with leg-
ends like T. Model Ford, B. B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Chuck Berry. For the past 60 or so years, Gib operates one of the last juke joints left in the world in his shed where he tries to keep the music of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and other legendary bluesmen alive. It’s one of the last of Birmingham’s secret treasures. Gip’s shed, backyard, and overflow areas are filled with people of all races and all classes. It’s really in Bessemer, a small city a few miles southwest of Birmingham. Some neighbors complained several years ago and tried to shut down Gip’s Saturday night parties. After a long drawn out county commission battle, Gip won. Sort of. He is allowed to continue having his party but he can’t run it as a business. No admission charge. No tee-shirt sales. No food or drink sales. You bring your own drinks. He can accept donations. The Blues live on every Saturday night at Gip’s Place.

CORYDON – Visitors to Corydon will have the one-of-a-kind opportunity to witness the action as a team of Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites staff unearths the remains of prehistoric animals. On April 6, the team of experts will embark on an archeological dig at Indiana Caverns in Corydon, just 20 miles from Louisville, KY. The excavation will last several days, depending on the amount of material discovered.
like mammal, as well as black bear; fisher, a carnivorous feline; owl and other birds; a bison; and snakes.
During the dig, visitors will be able to get up close in order to watch from a specially designed observation platform as the team searches for bones at the archeologically significant site. Buckets of sediment and prehistoric animal remains will be hauled to the platform from the dig area, allowing travelers to see in real-time exactly what the team discovers during the dig. Information on Indiana Caverns is found at IndianaCaverns.com, with complete area travel information and a free visitors guide available at thisisIndiana.org or (888) 7382137.
Richards added that he is confident he and his team will recover many more peccary skeletons. The group will also be straining sediment in search of smaller animals and remains. Such findings may offer clues to the environmental conditions when these prehistoric animals perished in the cavern. The team could potentially find bones from other animals, such as dire wolves.
“This groundbreaking fieldwork being conducted by Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites experts offers our guests an extraordinary opportunity to be there and watch as history is being discovered,” said Harrison County Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Jeremy Yackle. In 2014, museum staff conducted a dig at Indiana Caverns, discovering five times more bones than they expected hidden in the depths and crevices of the cave for more than 40,000 years. This major discovery included skeletons of peccary, a pig-18- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ April, 2018
“Indiana Caverns contains an extensive bone yard of buried Pleistocene-era animals and will likely give rise to the discovery of new and rare Ice Age remains in the region,” said Ron Richards, senior research curator of paleobiology at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.

This is a unique opportunity for our guests to watch as history is being discovered.” About Indiana Caverns Travelers of all ages are welcome to observe the excavation and embark on a thrilling adventure through the Binkley Cave System, Indiana’s longest cave and 8th in the country. Food Fun Spring is here!
I know this because birds have built a nest in my mailbox. Twice. Since lunch. Even though they have repeatedly visited the mailbox, they apparently did not understand their eviction notice. You would think it was quite obvious from having all their belongings removed and tossed on the lawn multiple times. So what’s next? A legal document such as a letter? That seems a bit counterproductive since the objective is to prevent them from dive-bombing the postal carrier. My husband suggested a motion-activated airhorn. Hmmm, that one has potential. But alas, that too seems a bit over the top since we already have enough evidence of their presence (which still needs to be hosed out of the bottom of the mailbox). And wouldn’t the postman be surprised? We could video it and post it on line to see if it goes viral. I realize they are just small winged creatures searching for a place to call home and start a family. I wish them no harm, but let’s just say I don’t plan to be the chairman of the welcoming committee either. I am not going to play the role of the sweet grandmotherly type by donning my apron and baking them a plate of delicious birdseed cookies. Speaking of cookies, I recently found a recipe that simply screams spring. The option to use any flavor of Jello provides versatility of flavor and color.

Authentic Western Retreat
It’s not every day that you get to immerse yourself in a real working cattle ranch in a way that the people who work the land do. While climbing natural ridges and walking through the open prairies, guests will find themselves face-to-face with the great American West and all of its inhabitants. Visitors will have the chance to explore the grounds that were previously inhabited by Native Americans and worked by Pioneers, and will be able to learn the innovative practices of a working ranch from Silvies Valley Ranch team members. For those looking to wake up at the crack of dawn, get their hands dirty and “dine” from an authentic chuck-wagon at the end of a hard day’s work in the Wild West, Silvies is a destination that can’t-bemissed. The size and unique Western experience provided by Silvies is ideal for small gatherings of friends, families, companies and associations. Outings, hikes and events are tailored to the interests of each group, creating a vacation destination like no other. A delicious and biting mix of Drambuie and rye whisky, the drink is garnished with a crabapple from the ranch’s only fruit tree that is pierced through – you guessed it – a horseshoe nail. The Horseshoe Nail also serves as the celebratory cocktail for golfers who hit their self-proclaimed longest drive on the 18th hole of the Craddock Course at The Links at Silvies Ranch. Incomparable Golf Experience
Silvies Valley Ranch provides visitors with a one-of-a-kind golf experience, including two reversible 18-hole courses - the Hankins course and Craddock course, Chief Egan – a 9-hole par-3 mountain meadow course, and McVeigh’s Gauntlet – a stunning 7-hole challenge course carved into a razor back. All courses were designed by award winning Northwest golf architect Dan Hixson, each fulfilling the needs of every player, from novice to professionals of all ages. Together, these courses offer an unending number of golf experiences, bringing players faceto-face with the majesty and serenity of the region. Perhaps the most unique and whimsical offering in golf, The Links is home to the world-famous goat caddies. Born and bred at Silvies Valley Ranch, the professionally trained American Range Goat caddies are available for hire on McVeigh’s Gauntlet. Saddled up with a custom-designed goat caddie backpack that carries drinks, golf balls, tees, and a few clubs, the goats join players on The Gauntlet, bringing an entirely new sense of entertainment and fun to the golf experience. Give them a few peanuts along the way and they’ll refrain from giving bad advice.
Restoring Ecology and the Local Economy Enjoyed first by Native Americans, then trappers and finally ranchers for the last 120 years, Silvies Valley Ranch has produced some of the best beef in the region. The cattle are bred and raised to be smaller, yielding better, smaller cuts of meat, and to be gentler on the natural land on which they are raised. “Heritage Naked Beef,” free of antibiotics, hormones, corn, alfalfa, grain, chemically treated or polluted water, or any artificial additives, is a line of beef specific to Silvies Valley Ranch, and is considered by many to be the most exceptional and unique beef available. The same is true of the ranch’s chevon that comes from a breed of goats actually developed in Silvies Valley. At Silvies Valley Ranch, caring for and preserving the land is a top priority. The clubhouse at The Links, Egan’s Hideout, is totally off the grid, relying on self-generated solar power, and all courses on-site have committed to low fertilization with all plantings being native except the bent grass greens. Whether it’s last-minute planning for a Spring break, an extended weekend getaway, or a full-fledged vacation, Indianapolis is the place to go for the sports-minded families and the “kid” in everybody, regardless of age. INDIANAPOLIS - I had the pleasure of getting a hosted sneak peek of the new Riley Health Sports Legends Experience at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis before it opened to the public in March. This $38.5 million expansion on an added seven and onehalf acres is located at the north end of the museum’s campus. There are 12 outdoor experiences featured including a football, baseball, basketball, and soccer field. There is a tennis and hockey court, two golf courses, a drag strip, speedway and fitness pathway. All are built on a smaller than normal scale. Each is designed specifically to allow its visitors to practice skills that will help play a better game later in real life. immersive outdoor and indoor family health, fitness, and sports experience that will inspire visitors to be active together in a noncompetitive way while creating healthy habits that will last a lifetime,” said Dr. Jeffrey

What was Dr. Patchen’s dream and goal for the past ten years became a reality with the help of “All-Star Partner,” Riley Children’s at Indiana University Health. Their main goal in common was to develop a place for promoting family health and fitness. After many surveys and extensive studies, the sports theme pulled everything together. ne of the best ways to enjoy the scenic and natural beauty of the Ozarks is by hiking or taking a leisurely walk through the mixed terrain enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the forests, glades, meadows and prairie. There are ample opportunities for visitors to the “Best Recreational Lake” in the Nation to head off the beaten path and discover the wonders of nature. There is perhaps no better place to hike at the Lake of the Ozarks than at its two state parks. In total, the parks have a combined 26 different trails covering over 57 miles. Each park showcases the area’s natural history and beauty and each has its own claim to fame. Ha Ha Tonka State Park was voted the fourth-best state park in the country by readers of USA Today and has one of the most photographed features in the state: The ruins of a 19th century “castle” that was constructed on a high limestone bluff overlooking Ha Ha Tonka Spring and the Niangua arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. The 3,751-acre park is Missouri’s premier showcase of karst geology and is unique in the quantity and quality of its remarkable geological features. Ha Ha Tonka’s fourteen walking trails, covering more than 15 scenic miles throughout the park, make it easy for visitors to experience the honeycomb of tunnels, rock bridges, caverns, springs, sinkholes and other natural areas. Visitors can peer into caves, climb 316 steps from the spring to the “castle” on a wooden boardwalk that circles the spring chasm, or navigate wellworn paths through the woodland area and the park’s glades. -46- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ April, 2018
Hikers of all ages enjoy the variety of trails at the Lake of the Ozarks. Jim Divincen, administrator for the Lake of the Ozarks Tri-County Lodging Association, enjoys spending some of his free time hiking the trails at Ha Ha Tonka. One of Divincen’s favorite trails is the park’s longest, Turkey Pen Hollow. This 6.5mile hike winds through the scenic and rugged Ha Ha Tonka Oak Woodland Natural Area. “With some near 200-foot climbs in elevation, this trail provides many spectacular views,” says Divincen. “The first time I finished the trail, I remember thinking, ‘wow, that was really special.’ Since then, I’ve hiked this trail on several occasions at different times of the year and it’s an absolutely beautiful experience no matter the season or the weather.”
Ozark Hike - Continued... Divincen recommends that those planning to hike Turkey Pen Hollow should allow at least three hours to complete the trail. In addition, Divincen encourages hikers of any of the trails at the Lake to be sure to bring plenty of drinking water. More details on Ha Ha Tonka’s trails can be found at mostateparks.com/park/ha-ha-tonka-state-park. Lake of the Ozarks State Park is Missouri’s largest park consisting of 17,626 acres and also is the most visited. It is a favorite among backpackers and anglers and also features a 10-mile aquatic trail, accessible only by boat. On land, 12 trails, ranging from 0.8 of a mile to 13.5 miles, wind through the park. Lake of the Ozarks State Park also features trails that accommodate mountain bikers and equestrians for those who would like to explore the park by bicycle or on horseback. One of the park’s more popular trails is Coakley Hollow, a self-guided interpretive trail that measures a fairly easy distance of one mile. Coakley Hollow meanders through one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the park, featuring six different types of ecosystems, including dolomite glades, fens, springfed streams and several types of woodlands. Interpretive stations are located along the trail, making it easy to learn about the terrain and rare species encountered along the hike. “A great family-friendly trail at Lake of the Ozarks State Park is the Lakeview Bend Trail,” says Divincen. This 1.5-mile trail begins at the campground check-in station along State Highway 134 in Kaiser and runs along the banks of Lake of the Ozarks. “There are some splendid views of the Lake from this trail, especially in-season, from June through October, when the water level is up,” Divincen concludes. Hidden below the surface of Lake of the Ozarks State Park is Ozark Caverns, one of four show caves in the Lake area. Informative park interpreters
lead hour-long, narrated hand-held lantern tours of Ozark Caverns’ underground beauty from midMay until mid-September. For more information on the trails and features of Lake of the Ozarks State Park, visit mostateparks.com/park/lake-ozarksstate-park. Both state parks are free and open to the public year around. Each offers spectacular shows of color during the spring and fall and native plant species and wildlife thrive in all seasons. Five unique Missouri conservation areas at Lake of the Ozarks welcome hikers and feature designated walking trails, birding areas and natural areas to explore as well. The conservation areas also are free and open year around. For more details on all the Lake-area conservation areas, their trailheads, and other activities and amenities available, call the Camdenton Conservation Service Center at 573-346-2210, or head to the Missouri Department of Conservation website at www.mdc. mo.gov to access an interactive atlas for detailed maps of the different areas. There are many lodging options available in close proximity to the state parks and conservation areas, making it easy to relax and unwind after a day on the trails. Accommodations range from full-service resorts to smaller, family-owned resorts; quaint bed and breakfasts to fully-equipped vacation rental homes and condominiums; rustic cabins and comfortable campgrounds and RV parks and familiar hotels and motels. For a complete listing of lodging options available around the Lake area, visit the accommodations page at www.FunLake.com.
