UP CLOSE From the Editor Dog Days of Summer Even though I am finally just now thawing out, the calendar tells me we are at the high peak of summer and it will soon come to an end. School will be back in session for many this month. The store shelves are already emptying of the supply sales and will soon be restocked with Halloween masks, candy and trick-or-treat bags. According to Wikipedia, Dog Days is the name for the hot, most sultry period of summer, from about July 3 to Aug. 11. Named in early times by observers in countries bordering the Mediterranean, the period was reckoned as extending from 20 days before to 20 days after the conjunction of Sirius (the dog star) and the sun. We can even trace the term back as far as the Egyptians and appears in the ancient written poetic and other records of the Greeks (e.g., Hesiod and Aratus) and the later Romans (including Homer, in The Iliad). Festivals can be traced back to Bible days when celebrations were scheduled to celebrate the harvest of the land. Amidst it all, there is one thing I’ve found we have in common. We all like to eat. Whatever the celebration or event, organizers spend much time planning the food. During my dog days, my favorite is iced tea or lemonade. The annual festival from our own town is setting up only a few doors from the office and as soon as I step outside I smell the aroma of BBQ. So the question of the month is: “What is your favorite fair food? You can email your answer to the editor@theweekendermagazine.com, answer on our facebook or twitter pages or go the the home page of our website and enter your choice in the “sign up for a free getaway” button at the top right of the page.
