Having grown up in the hometown of the Missouri State Fair, it didn’t take long for me to believe I was an expert on the subject. I started working at our church sponsored tent at the age of 13 and quickly learned which gates we the easiest to find parking spots and which areas to avoid at certain times of the day. I even learned to drive on the streets of the fairgrounds off seasons, of course. Dating back to 1901, the Missouri State Fair is among the state’s oldest and most tradition-rich events for summer family fun! It’s where I looked at displayed wedding cakes and yearned to learn how to decorate one myself. Little did I know that one day my sister (your managing editor) and I would both learn how and work in her bakery for more than 10 years. One year, she made a portrait cake for Burl Ives when he performed at the fair. Another election year, the fair board ordered a cake with the map of Missouri on it for the Governor. To date, it was the largest cake she had ever attempted. Assembling it “at” the fairgrounds, it was six full sheet cakes 9’ x 12’ as big as my bedroom. She even had the pleasure of being asked to judge the cakes at the fair more than once. It was at the Home Economics building where I learned about ready made pie crusts and haven’t made my own from scratch since. Fairs mean different things to different people. One year, we sat on the grass next to our car and waited for midnight just so we could say “we stayed too long at the fair.” The concert lineup in front of the Grandstands should find everyone attending very happy My sons’ favorite band will perform at the grandstand one night while another night will delight my 86 year old father. So take a look at all the people to see scheduled to be at the fair this year - starting on page 10. Make plans to visit the air-conditioned Missouri State Fair Gift Shop & Museum during the 2014 Fair. The volunteers will be glad to help you find the perfect 2014 State Fair souvenir or collector’s item while they share historical highlights of the Fair. Who knows? I may even see you at the fair. Our publisher has never been and I think it’s high time to take him. Kathy Barnett/Senior Editor (Kandy’s sister) 4 l www.TheWeekenderMagazine.com. July, 2014
