Editor’s Picks 6 Shopping Tips to Prep for the Holidays ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE BUYING
SET A REALISTIC BUDGET
Do you know how much you’re putting aside for gifts this season? If you don’t, it’s a good idea to figure it out. Make a list of those who you plan to buy for and how much you want to spend on each one. If your total budget doesn’t agree with the gifts you’d like to purchase, consider scaling back now so you can spend later. Relist by prioritizing each item and try to purchase the most important items first. Keep your list with you at all times so if you see a bargain or something on sale, you can check it off and alter your total. This helps control overspending on every item. Most of all, once your budget is set, do your best to stick with your plan! Tip: create a fund specifically for holiday shopping and put an allotted amount aside per week. Start now for next year.
You might think you know best, but that doesn’t mean you should just buy gifts you think people will like. Don’t waste money on gifts that’ll end up being re-gifted (we’re all guilty as charged). Study the personality of the person you are buying for. Learn what they like or dislike and use. What are their preferences? Watch what they give to others. Usually, people will give what they like to receive themselves. If you find the person you are buying for likes to give jewelry, then by all means award them with jewelry. If they like to read, try a magazine subscription or new book. Does your recipient have a collection? You can never have too many items there. Tip: ask your family and friends what they’ve been eying lately or give them something you know they’ll use like a coffee gift card or movie passes.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL LAST MINUTE
The longer you wait, the more stressful it’ll be in the long run. Plus, you’ll end up spending more money than you’ll probably want to - considering how prices skyrocket closer to the holidays. Do yourself and your wallet a favor by starting to shop now. Watch for sales, collect coupons, shop yearround and designate a gift drawer or shelf where you can stow those special buys. Most people who wait until the last minute are those who are extremely busy with other important responsibilities. Just remember, you can save time if you shop early, during the week or off-season so you don’t have to wait in line. Tip: If you’re out and about, carry a list of the people you want to buy for, and if you happen to see something, get it now and consider that gift checked off!
\
SHOP SMART
Holiday shopping can be fun but what’s not fun is spending time (and gas) looking for parking. Every day in the U.S., millions of cars idle; which wastes gas and pollutes the air. Instead of wasting time and energy circling for parking spots, download ParkMobile and use GPS-zoning to view available parking spots under the ParkMobile Pro membership account. ParkMobile even lets you refill your parking meter via your smart phone, so no need to carry quarters. Once in the store, items for purchase have been selected, and faced with a medium to long regular checkout line versus a slightly longer express line, you should generally opt for the regular one. Why? It takes more time for the cashier to complete more individual transactions.
BE SAVVY
SHOP UNUSUAL SPOTS FOR GIFTS
Do your homework before you shop. Price compare. Look online. Ask if there are upcoming holiday discounts (and we’re talking beyond Black Friday). Coupon clipper? Make sure the savings offered is worth buying the listed brand. Sometimes another brand equal in quality is already priced less or on sale. Download the ShopSavvy barcode scanner app on your phone. ShopSavvy helps you find the right product at the right price so you’ll never regret a purchase decision again. Get access to the best products, tested and reviewed in hundreds of categories Tip: many stores will match online prices, so make sure to do your due diligence to get the best price. Ask about any qualifying discounts. Sr. Citizen? Student? AAA? ect.
Consider shopping at unconventional places like thrift stores and boutiques. Flea markets and antique stores are great places to find that special item to add to an existing collection of the recipient. There are many “treasures” to be found, and chances are, the gift receiver will appreciate the uniqueness of your purchase. Want something original and one-of-a-kind? Shop at local art or craft shows. This is a great way to support fund raisers and/or private organizations. Blend a weekend getaway with your shopping trip and discover someplace new to enjoy for yourself while checking off your shopping list. Tip: second hand stores have brand name finds if you’re willing to search, and they often come with a slashed price.

For Unique Shopping If you are looking for old-fashioned holiday atmosphere while shopping, head to California. From the snowy High sierra to the southern sunny coast, there is plenty of holiday charm to satisfy, especially in historic towns and villages. Think old-fashioned carriage rides in the Gold Country or sipping hot chocolate in front of the fireplace at a ski lodge. Here are some of our favorites:
Mendocino (North Coast).
Rediscover the magic of a simple Christmas where there are no chain stores. Instead, every shop and restaurant offers something unique and different. Many of the historic shops are filled with local crafts and art. Just north of town, the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens comes alive on weekends with music and lighted displays— from sailing ships to jellyfish— during its Festival of Lights. And in Fort Bragg, about 15 minutes north of town, hop aboard the Skunk Train for a special holiday sightseeing ride through the redwoods. It comes with hot cocoa and strolling musicians.
Nevada City (Gold Country). Experience Christmas past
during this historic town’s Victorian-style celebration. The town’s narrow, hilly streets, lit by glowing gas lamps and set against a backdrop of towering pines add to the setting. Carolers appear in period dress, brass bands, and bagpipers fill the streets. The holiday
movice, “The Christmas Card” was filmed here. Munch on roasted chestnuts while enjoying a carriage ride past historic buildings with twinkling white lights. Drive to nearby Grass Valley, where the Cornish Christmas Celebration commemorates the town’s historical ties with western England. Expect musicians, jugglers, and traditional cloggers.
Mammoth Lakes (High Sierra).
Hit the slopes for world-class skiing and snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain. Then get into the holiday spirit at The Village at Mammoth, where the kids can visit Santa Claus and sing carols during karaoke events. View the annual fireworks and torchlight parade during Night of Lights by the Canyon Lodge.

Sample local varietals or craft beer during the two-day Julefest Wine & Beer Walk, and finish your gift shopping—and get great deals— during the Shop, Mingle & Jingle event. There’s also a living nativity reenactment.
Julian (San Diego County).
This historic gold-mining town in the pine-forested mountains northeast of San Diego, kicks off a Country Christmas season with the lighting of the town’s 80-foot-tall living Christmas tree. French Market
Similar to some European markets, this historically charming open-air market features shopping, dining, music and local tradition that is uniquely New Orleans. The French Market includes five blocks of local produce, specialty art, handmade crafts, retail shopping and more.
In 1791, the French Market originated as a Native American trading post along the Mississippi River. From there it continued to evolve into a cultural and commercial hub for New Orleans, as French and Spanish colonists opened the market up to ships and traders from all over the world. Over the next three centuries, immigrants from Europe, Africa and the Caribbean began to open their own venues at this French Quarter market, offering everything from Italian butcheries to African coffee and Choctaw spices. In the late 19th century, the Market was given its modern day, bizarre-like structure, designed by Joseph Abeilard, one of America’s first African American Architects. With its new permanent home, the French Market continued to grow and add more commercial products, fresh produce and unique commodities that cannot be found anywhere else.
Dutch Alley One of the most historically famous components of the French Market is called Dutch Alley, a charming pedestrian plaza at Dumaine and St. Phillip Streets. Dutch Alley was commenced by previous New Orleans Mayor, Ernest N. “Dutch†Morial, in 1978. Mayor Morial gave the French Market an extra touch of pizzaz with the Dutch Alley, as it includes a performance tent, historic statues, the Dutch Alley Artists’ Co-op and the visitor center for the one and only New Orleans Jazz National Park. Here you can find programs and information about special events at the French Market and all things Jazz in the city. Food - City Park Today the French Market has become one of the most popular destinations in the city. It’s large variety of food stands, restaurants and outdoor dining spaces draw in hungry visitors for anything from small snacks to large meals and even packaged goods to take home as souvenirs. One of the most popular destinations is the famous Café Du Monde. Located just off of Jackson Square, this monumental outdoor café serves the iconic beignets and café au lait that locals and visitors

just can’t resist. And there is always a musician playing the guitar or saxophone nearby. Other iconic New Orleans dishes are available at multiple venues throughout the market, including Po-boys, oysters and exotic beverages (both alcoholic and non). Farmer’s Market One of the most popular attractions at the Market is the fresh and delicious Farmers Market Pavilion. Visitors come from near and far come to visit this pavilion, full of local produce and specialty foods with worldly inspiration. The Pavilion is open daily and includes full service eateries for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as unique drink, sweets and snack options. In addition to the daily offerings at the pavilion, the Farmers Market also hosts special fresh food markets on Wednesdays and Sundays, bringing in the finest vendors in region with everything from seasonal vegetables to homegrown spices. So whether you’re looking for an exotic fruit or some famous New Orleans pralines to take back home, you’ll find it at the

Farmers Market. The Farmers Market even hosts a special festival every year for the spring harvest of the Creole tomato. The Creole Tomato Festival is free and open to the public to enjoy an endless amount of fresh picked tomatoes and tomato based dishes that are unique to the New Orleans area. Crafts / City Park Amidst the kiosks and endless strands of fresh food concoctions, the French Market showcases over fifty local artists and craftsmen. From printmaking to scrubs and lotions, the Market has a unique array of both local and worldly artists who sell their carefully crafted works that each represent the unique and authentic culture of New Orleans. And not only will these artists share their creations, but they love to share their stories and experiences in the city. Flea Market In addition to the multitude of crafts, boutiques and specialty shops along the French Market, the Flea Market hosts merchants from all over the world. This endless strip of openair vendors presents everything from t-shirts, to handmade jewelry, accessories and photography, representing a diverse community of New Orleans tradition and new creativity. Getting There Located just parallel to the Mississippi River and right off Jackson Square, the French Market is within walking distance of any location in the French Quarter. You can take the St. Charles streetcar from Uptown, or the Canal St. streetcar from Mid-City and get off at Canal and Carondelet Street to walk a few blocks down to the river. There are also plenty of paid parking lot spaces along S Peters Street within block of Jackson Square.

By Sara Martin Celebrate an Ozark Mountain Christmas in Branson
Things to Do
Branson takes its reputation as one of America’s most Christmasy towns seriously, and November 1 launches a two-month celebration filled with lights, song and joy. This Ozark Mountain retreat has made its Christmas lineup of events a treasured tradition for more than a quarter century, with celebrations running from the very first day of November through New Year’s Day. The town’s Christmas offerings are plentiful, so we’ve made a list (and checked it twice) to highlight 10 of the “can’t miss” sights and sounds of the season. •Silver Dollar City, the award-winning theme park in Branson, transforms into a Christmas won-

From strolling among 6.5 million lights (the equivalent of 680 miles) and trying out some of the park’s rides to seasonal shows and shopping at the Home of American Craftsmanship, a day at the park is a magical way to enjoy the Christmas season. Highlights of the park’s “Old Time Christmas” celebration are a five-story Special Effects Christmas Tree and a nightly light

With singing, dancing, prancing reindeer and more, this show features the Moon River Orchestra performing everyone’s favorite Christmas songs. •Branson Scenic Railway provides visitors with an opportunity to step inside a classic Christmas tale aboard the renowned “Polar Express.” After boarding an authentic locomotive at the 1906 Branson depot, visitors to The Polar Express

I refuse to turn my oven on in August! And June. Let’s see, that also includes September, May . . . and July. But from October through April? I’ll find inventive ways to prepare entire meals which can be popped into the oven and practically forgotten until the timer goes off to prevent burning down the house. Nothing says “Yum!” like freshbaked . . . well, anything. Funeral dinner? I bake. Hosting a party? I bake. Carry-in dinner at work? I bake. Thursday lunch? I bake! Let’s consider the traditional Thanksgiving meal: from the turkey to the pumpkin pie and everything in between (except possibly the cranberry sauce) requires use of the oven. I’ve heard of people who rent an extra refrigerator for the week if hosting a large gathering, but I’ve considered begging, borrowing, buying or renting an extra oven. Where in the world I would put it is a whole other problem. I just can’t visualize a stove sitting right beside the grand piano. There is that one unused outlet on the front porch, but that might be just a bit too redneck for this neighborhood. If all else fails, I could stash it in the garage next to the freezer, but that would cause a temperature war and the need for some real creative explanations when the resulting utility bill arrives. No, I think I’ll stick with the old tried and true method of baking ahead of time and freezing as much as I can. Once Thanksgiving is past, and all the leftovers are dispersed

with various relatives I can start to refill the freezer for Christmas. The one possible exception might be the cranberry sauce. Why is it always the last thing to be given away or eaten? If nobody likes or eats it, why do we serve it? I have a theory about that. Not only does it provide color, taste and texture contrast, but is also a TRADITION! Besides, I actually look forward to eating a bite or two with my turkey. But alas, once that is accomplished, I’ve pretty much had my fill until the next year. So what do I do with it? I bake, of course.
Leftover Cranberry Sauce Bread 1 ½ c. cranberry sauce, divided 1/3 c. olive oil ½ c. sugar ¼ c. brown sugar 1 lg. egg 3 tsp. vanilla 1 ½ c. flour ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. soda 1 tsp. cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray the bottom of a loaf pan. Sprinkle with sugar. Beat together 1 c. cranberry sauce, oil, sugars, egg and vanilla. Add dry ingredients. Stir well just until evenly blended. Spread in prepared pan. Dollop remaining sauce on top. NOTE: I used jellied sauce in the batter and whole berry sauce for the dollop. Bake approximately 50 min. So there you have it: a way to use up all that leftover sauce. Plus, you can get a head start on some Christmas baking for gift giving. This recipe is frugal, versatile (try substituting a can of cherry pie filling instead of cranberries), easy to make, looks pretty when served, smells good, tastes great and freezes well. It will also impress your friends who don’t bake or think they don’t have the time. I shared a test batch with some co-workers and they liked it so much I decided to make more. Of course, this time of year that required a trip to the grocery store because I didn’t have any leftover cranberry sauce on hand. As of this writing, the stores haven’t started their Thanksgiving menu sales yet so I went to a grocery outlet and bought canned cranberry sauce by the case. I even found disposable loaf pans so I am set for gift giving. Oops! Now they know what they’re getting for Christmas. So I guess it’s time to fire up the oven since I’m anxiously looking forward to the wonderful aromas of seasonal baking. I’m just glad Christmas isn’t during the summer.

Crown Center: By Kathy Barnett Senior Editor When I was a child growing up in central Missouri, the tradition of Black Friday shopping for most was heading to the city. The Plaza lights in Kansas City were annually lit on Thanksgiving night, creating miles and miles of cars inching along the way to view them. I grew up. I got married. I moved away. We returned to the city in 1973 for a conference held at new meeting facilities in The Westin Hotel which joined the brand new Crown Center, built by Hallmark Cards which had also just opened. In the lobby there is a beautiful waterfall and garden carved from the limestone hill where the hotel is built. My husband attended the meetings. I shopped. The shopping center consisted of thee levels of shops, restaurants and theaters covering nearly 300,000 square feet of space. In 2014, the center’s evolution continued with the addition of a new 60,000-square-foot Halls store. Today, Crown Center is a shopping and entertainment district dominated by its namesake mall, which overlooks a plaza with an ice rink. Family-friendly attractions include the Hallmark Visitors Center, with exhibits and history of the iconic Hallmark brand; the Coterie Theatre, staging both classic and contemporary shows; Legoland, Sea Life Aquarium and Kaleidoscope. The Crown Center complex also features a wide variety of restaurants, ranging from fast food and snack outlets to the utmost in fine dining, showcasing some of the best local and national restaurants in the industry. Among these highlights are the world’s only Crayola® Café and the train-themed Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant. At Christmastime, activities center around the lighting of the Mayor’s gigantic Christmas tree. This year, the program begins at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 23. This is no admission fee and all are invited. -48- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ November, 2018

A former ceiling fan shop owner in the 1980s, Mr.Green wanted to open a business that would supplement his ceiling fan business, and compete with the chain stores. His fondness for the Christmas season became the concept and inspiration to open “The Christmas Shop” in the early 1980s – which would later become North Pole City. North Pole City has become a year round online store and a retail store is open September through January. Months in advance of each retail shop season, the Green family and their employees are busier than Santa’s elves setting up a winter wonderland and holiday theme throughout the store. The setting rivals vast displays in the biggest of cities and stores, with dozens of festive trees adorned with the season’s latest ornaments. Mifflinburg Chri
Founded in 1987, this is the oldest authentic Christkindl market in the United States. When it was founded, the Market initially had 20 huts spread over a one block area of Market Street. Since then, the Market has expanded to over 100 huts across two and a half blocks in the heart of Mifflinburg. It has become an important Christmas tradition for families near and far and welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Continuous indoor and outdoor entertainment keeps Market guests busy. Choral concerts, zither music, fascinating talks about Germany, and the Christkindl Cinema offer indoor opportunities. The outdoor stage is continually occupied with instrumental concerts, international dancers, German band music, and demonstrations. Kinder World is for the children. Wandering characters including St. Nicholas, the Kurrende Singers, our musical Christmas Tree, the Smoking Woodsman, and the ever-popular Hilby, the Skinny German Juggle Boy continually entertain guests. Live Nativity - St. Francis of Assisi is credited with creating the first Nativity scene in 1223 at Greccio, Italy. The Mifflinburg Christkindl Market features a live Nativity scene that can be found just past the main entrace on the Lutheran Church grounds. Volunteers from church organizations, and others, along with a display of
animals, enhance the live Nativity scene. The facade of the church in the background only adds to welcome each visitor with its picturesque view.
Sweet Treats
- Cookies, strudel, candy apples, German roasted nuts, and a dozen other delicacies are available to visitors each year. Fantastic Food - The Bratwurst, Knockwurst, and pork schnitzel are all delicious, but certainly not alone when it comes to the wonderful foods available at the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market. The smell of each, along with Hungarian goulash and schnitz un knepp, hangs in the cold winter air that you can almost taste it. Unique Gifts - Glass ornaments are great, but where else can you actually watch them being hand-blown and painted in the traditional German style than at a Christkindl market? You can also watch craftsman create both spun trees (Spanbäume) and turned trees (Kräuselbäume). Or if you prefer something else, Christmas pyramids (Weihnachtspyramide), candle arches (Shwibbögen), nutcrackers (Nussknackern), and In-

ge-Glas ornaments are all available for purchase within the Market. The Glühwein - What would a Christkindl Market be without Glühwein!? This aromatic, warming, spiced-wine has heralded and fulfilled pleasures of the holiday season for hundreds of years. Glühwein is a German Christmas essential. Mulled, never boiled, Glühwein is available for sale at the Christkindl Pub along with or without a commemorate Christkindl mug. Several vendors also sell Glühwein in bottles for visitors to enjoy at home. The Prune Men - People have been collecitng Zwetschgenmännla (prune men) for nearly 600 years. These funny little guys originated in Nuremberg and have become a treasured item at Christkindl markets all over the world. Visitors are welcomed to watch
istkindl Market. in Pennsylvania
Sarah Miller, a local artist and our resident Zwetschgenmännla designer, create prune figures that can range from typisch Deutsch to wholly unique to the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market. Kinder World - This family event has lots of fun for children. A Lantern Parade, crafts for children and pictures with Santa on Friday evening keep the children busy. Children can visit Elf School, hear the stories of Firliputzli the German Angel and the Bremen Town Musicians. Next door are puppet shows and there is a scavenger hunt for children. Don’t forget to see the peek-a-boo doll House with a doll’s tea party and the gingerbread house where Mama Gingerbread and the children are baking cookies. And it wouldn’t be a Christkindl visit without purchasing a Dample Dei sweetbread man.
The Cancellation Stamp The tradition of mailing Christmas cards with a special postal cancellation stamp began in Austria in 1695. That tradition continues today at the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market. Mail deposited in the traditional style European post will be hand-cancelled by the Mifflinburg Post Office with the annual Christkindl cancellation image. The tradition adds special meaning to the Market and to the cards mailed from it. Lantern Parade - In Germany lantern parades are held Nov. 11, the date of the martyrdom of Roman-soldier-turned monk, Saint Martin. Saint Martin was a compassionate man who led a quiet and simple life and is said to have cut his cape in half
and shared it with a cold beggar suffering in a snowstorm. German children often make their own lanterns to celebrate St. Martin’s Day, illuminating them with candles or battery lights and march through the streets singing the song Lantern, Lantern. Second grade students in Mifflinburg learn this song in German and sing it while parading through the Christkindl Market each year. Entertainment - The wandering musical Christmas tree, Hilby the Skinny German Juggle Boy, the Kurrende Singers and this year’s theme, the Bremen Town Musicians along with St. Nicholas and Santa Claus provide a busy schedule for guests. Ski City:
A Different Adventure Every Day SALT LAKE CITY – Want to go on an “extended” weekend getaway that lasts all week long and mix a ski trip with your Christmas shopping? Then Salt Lake City is the destination you should choose. There’s a good reason that Salt Lake skiers and boarders refer to their hometown as “Ski City.” It’s just a forty minute drive from downtown to Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude, four of the greatest resorts in the country, each one averaging 500” of snow each winter. Then roll in seemingly endless performing arts, the Utah Jazz, bars, brewpubs, restaurants, museums, food trucks, nightclubs and concerts into one vibrant urban city and it’s no wonder that Ski City is where you can have a different adventure every day. Here’s a look at a week’s worth of possibilities: Sunday: Take an early direct flight into Salt Lake City International Airport and arrive in time to head up to Alta Ski Area by late morning. Naturally, you pre-purchased the Ski City Super Pass, one of the industry’s most flexible and value-laden passes that’s good at all four Ski City resorts. Ski hard until your legs tell you that it’s time for a beer at the newly renovated Snowpine Lodge. Head back to Ski City and check into your hotel (there are 19,000+ rooms in the valley to

Return to Ski City to grab a cocktail and an early bite at White Horse Spirits & Kitchen before catching a Utah Jazz game at Vivint Smart Home Arena. Tuesday: Breakfast-to-go from Toasters for the drive up to Solitude for a day for freshies in Honeycomb Canyon, an early dinner in Ski City at Lake Effect and a Broadway-caliber performance at the Eccles Theater, with a nightcap at Beer Bar/Bar X. Wednesday: It’s rest-the-legs day, so sleep in, savor a late breakfast at Hub & Spoke Diner, then check out the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum be-
Thursday: Pray for powder because today you ski or ride Brighton. Lunch with locals on a rack of ribs at Milly Chalet, spend a blissful an afternoon in the trees and then head back down Big Cottonwood Canyon to have a Polygamy Porter at Wasatch Brew Pub in Sugarhouse and dinner at Avenues Proper. Friday: Last day on the slopes. You call the shots on the resort of the day depending on where it dumped the most last night. Apres brews at Desert Edge Brewery, dinner at the hip Table X, followed by some music at Urban Lounge. Saturday: Time to head home, but not before breakfast at Eva’s Bakery Boulangerie, the downtown Salt Lake bakeshop that uses locally-sourced flour, and plenty of butter, to bake breads, French pastries, sandwiches and more.
