Just Visitin’

Happy Easter Went to visit my mom for Easter last weekend. She did NOT buy me an Easter basket. Oh, she had the regular candy peeps and a bag of chocolate foilwrapped eggs for me. But no messy colored real eggs for deviled eggs or potato salad later. No lamb cake on it’s nose because it never stands upright. Stores were already closed in her little village. So it was a toss up between eggs for breakfast or colored boiled eggs. I chose breakfast. The tradition of a bountiful Easter basket goes back a long way before our modern consumer driven version. Spring has always been seen as a time of rebirth and blessing and the fertility godddess Eostre (or Oestre) was sometimes depicted carrying a basket of eggs. It was traditional to take baskets of early seedlings to temples to increase the chance of a good harvest. Just doesn’t seem right to have Easter without my Easter basket even if I am over 30. Her excuse was the church the family now goes to has an Easter egg hunt on the lawn after church. Now how am I, at age 36, going to fight all those little kids for hidden eggs? Ah...the turmoils of growing up. The rest of the day, however, was very peaceful and enjoyable. Watched a couple movies, took a nap, and then planned a few more things to do, people to see and places to go - which are all covered in this issue of our South Ohio Weekender. Until the next time...

The Ohio Country Antique Show WILMINGTON - The Ohio Country Antique Show will return to Wilmington's Roberts Centre in 2012 for its eighth year of semi-annual sales. The spring session on Saturday, April 14 will feature an expanded field of 70 vendors; a smaller core line-up of 50 dealers is scheduled for the fall show on Saturday, October 20. Defying a downturn in many other areas of collecting, the interest in Americana and early country antiques has continued to soar. Ohio Country has been on the cutting edge of that popularity in the Midwest and is widely recognized as an excellent source for authentic, traditional antiques and art that befits the various early American styles. Featured in Antique Trader, Maine Antique Digest, Antique Week, and Early American Life Magazine, the Ohio Country
Antique Show includes both regional and national dealers representing several states. Their inventories include a diverse selection of 18th to early 20th century furnishings, art, and decorative accessories. All merchandise is guaranteed as represented. Collectors and decorators can choose from an array of large to small accents for the home and garden: primitives and stoneware; quilts and coverlets; paintings, lithographs, and folk art; early advertising and ephemera; toys and children's items; plus, unique industrial and architectural remnants. Furniture ready for the home is plentiful with styles ranging from period formal to log cabin rustic. Examples with colorful, original painted surfaces are an Ohio Country Antique Show hallmark. Jazz Appreciation Month: The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will mark the 11th annual Jazz Appreciation Month in April with a month-long celebration of jazz featuring performances, talks, tours and family-oriented events. The museum launched JAM in 2001 as an annual event that pays tribute to jazz both as a historic and living American art form. It has since grown to include celebrations in all 50 states and 40 other countries. Jazz Appreciation Month 2012 will use the theme “Jazz Crossing Borders & Cultures” to produce online, in-museum, and community programs that highlight why jazz artists are respected worldwide for their roles in advancing freedom, creativity, and unity through jazz music and the civic action and dialogues their music often sparks, making jazz men and women among America’s greatest cultural ambassadors. On April 30, the world will pay tribute to one of America’s newest cultural ambassadors when jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, UNESCO’s Goodwill Cultural Ambassador, concludes Jazz Appreciation Month by launching International Jazz Day. This annual, UNESCO endorsed initiative will use jazz and intercultural discussions to help foster unity, dialogue and intercultural understanding among the world’s youth. Page 11

April 14, 7 pm & 9:30 pm Tickets are $47.75 - $57.75 COLUMBUS - A second show at 9:30 pm has just been added to the schedule at the Palace Theatre. Comedian Ron "Tater Salad" White is best known as the cigar-smoking, scotchdrinking funnyman from the “Blue Collar Comedy phenomenon. But with two Grammy nominations, a Gold Record, three of the top rated one-hour specials in Comedy Central history, a book that appeared on the New York Times Best Seller List, and CD and DVD sales of over 10 Million units, Ron has established himself as a star in his own right. Biography: Ron has always been a storyteller; from the time he was a boy growing up in a small town in the middle of Texas oil country to selling windows for a living in Arlington to perfoming in sold-out theaters and arenas as a headlining comedian all across the country. For two decades he lived the life of a struggling comedian bouncing around to comedy clubs and driving to gigs in his beat-up Nissan pickup truck. In short, he paid his dues.
