People to See: Ava Earl - Songwriter
GIRDWOOD - Young, but wise, songwriter Ava Earl has a masterful control of her craft. Writing music and expressing emotions that demonstrate both maturity and an appreciation for life’s twists and turns, Earl’s efforts have culminated, thus far, in her brand new album, The Roses. Officially released today, The Roses was recorded in Nashville and produced by JT Nero, one half of the Americana-outfit, Birds of Chicago, and features hauntingly beautiful background vocals from Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira. The end result is a beautifully and intentionally crafted album that invokes images of natural wonder and fantasy alike, all while sticking closely to Earl’s own personal experiences. Fans can stream or purchase The Roses now at this link. ers, Rhett Miller, and Tim Easton. Tonight, Earl will be performing a very special release show at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Anchorage. A one-time virtual stream will take place Sunday at 7pm EST via Club Passim.
Amplify Music Magazine pointed out in a recent interview that, “Earl has always been drawn to powerful lyrical storytellers, which has weaved into her own lyrical consciousness. Endlessly inspired by and propelled by community found through music, Ava has always put herself in spaces to find and nurture that inter-musical connection and camaraderie.”
In their premiere of “Cimorene,” Underground Music Collective wrote, “Sonically, Ava’s sweetly-sung vocals provide a dash of magic to this romantic acoustic soundscape, while painting a vivid picture that leaves the listener in a state of reflection and wonder.”
Anchorage Press wrote about Earl’s rise as an Alaskan musician, opening the article with, “For those that still do not yet know Ava Earl or her music, may I introduce to you one of the gems of the Alaskan music scene.”

e Live On, a live virtual pro-
Wduction, will run through September 4. This new play is based on Hard Times by Studs Terkel. Each part presents ten stories and stands
Actors’ Gang Theater: ‘We Live On’ As actors, I think it’s important to find this kind of material to wrestle with. I’m blessed to have a company of actors that understand not only the importance of getting to the truth of difficult subject matter but also, in this challenging time of being apart, getting to that truth in community with as a complete experience.
Audiences around the globe can also join online prerecorded screening every Sunday until September 5th, at 9 am (PT) for Part One, at 10:30 am (PT) for Part Two, at 12 pm (PT) for Part Three. This marks the first Actors’ Gang mainstage production since the theater closed its doors in March of 2020.
When faced with the inability to assemble, The Actors’ Gang began working via zoom to adapt Terkel’s Hard Times. The production explores 30 different stories – a mix of stories documented by Terkel and original stories from the family histories of cast members – of courage and determination, a testimony of what it takes to survive unprecedented times, which are now presented over three different performances.
“We started developing We Live On in April of 2020 and it started with a question: How do we, as artists, address the fear of this time, the loss, the desperation, the lines at food banks, the poverty? It was essential to tell the stories of survivors, knowing that the courage and resilience of those that made it through the Great Depression could provide inspiration and hope for our audiences today. “I was lucky enough to meet Studs Terkel – a longtime hero of mine, a journalist that gave voice to the anonymous, the forgotten -- and interview him for LACMA before he passed. Studs was such an important documentarian of the human condition, of what it takes to survive through hardship. These voices from Hard Times that Studs has left us, remain resonant and essential today, perhaps more so than when they were chronicled back in 1970, a reminder of the tenacity, faith and love it will take for us to rebound from the trauma, unprecedented isolation, and loss of loved ones that we have recently lived through. Go, Do, See... each other. It is our hope to create that community throughout the world with our audiences in an intimate, personal and immediate way. We Live On is a piece born from loss and the limitations of lock down that seeks to create healing and catharsis and hope for a shook up world.” -Tim Robbins The Actors’ Gang Theater strives to make its content accessible to all patrons. Admission is Pay What You Can but the theater is extending free tickets to patrons who can’t afford to make a donation. For additional information or if you have questions, need assistance, or access to free tickets, please email at BoxOffice@TheActorsGang.com. Some of the stories presented in We Live On include: Sally Rand, whose fan dance to the strains of Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” and Chopin’s “Waltz in C Sharp Minor,” created a sensation at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair and helped launch a career that lasted more than 30 years. (Based on Studs Terkel’s interview with Sally Rand) Labor activist Cesar Chavez, who was moved to action by the targeted mistreatment of field workers
that he witnessed as a child in The Great Depression. (Based on Studs Terkel’s interview with Cesar Chavez)
Louis Banks, who rode the rails from Arkansas to Los Angeles on top of a boxcar with dreams of becoming a chef and hopes of finding any employment in the North. (Based on Studs Terkel’s interview with Louis Banks)
The words of Langston Hughes, the poet of the Harlem Renaissance, performed by contemporary poet Cyrus Roberts.
After graduating from high school, Terkel attended the University of Chicago, from which he received a law degree in 1934 during the worst of the Depression, although he had no interest in and never did practice law. While performing with the Chicago Repertory Theatre company he met Ida Goldberg, a social worker and lifelong activist who became his beloved wife until her 1999 death. They had one son. The nickname Studs comes from the character Studs Lonigan created by James T. Farrell, one of Terkel’s favorite writers.
Terkel joined the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Writers’ Project, and worked on radio soap operas, in stage plays, as a sportscaster and a disc jockey. His first radio program was called “The Wax Museum,” an eclectic selection of whatever sort of music struck his fancy, including the first recordings of Mahalia Jackson, who would become Terkel’s lifelong friend.
Actors’ Gang Theater: ‘We Live On’ In the late 1940s Terkel moved to television, where he was the main character of “Studs’ Place,” a groundbreaking unscripted television drama about the owner of a tavern in Chicago through which interesting characters, some famous, passed. But Terkel’s television career ended when he was blacklisted in 1953 for refusing to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee. He had also spoken out in favor of price and rent controls and against the poll tax and Jim Crow laws. As Terkel once said in an interview about those years, “I signed many petitions that were for unfashionable causes and never retracted.” Despite the blacklist and the political times, his well-known radio program, “The Studs Terkel Program,” continued to flourish, and aired from 1952 through 1997 on Chicago’s WMFT. The one-hour program was broadcast five days a week during those forty-five years and Studs interviewed a remarkable range of guests including Martin Luther King Jr., Leonard Bernstein, Mort Sahl, Bob Dylan, Dorothy Parker, John Prine, Tennessee Williams, Frank Zappa, and Big Bill Broonzy. Many of these interviews can be heard on line at the Studs Terkel Radio Archive created in 2014 collaboration with WMFT, the Chicago History Museum, with support from the Library of Congress. Today Studs is perhaps best known for his acclaimed oral histories – among them Division Street, Hard Times,Working, The “Good” War (which received a Pulitzer Prize in 1985), and Race, all of which remain in print at The New Press -- and for his many years as a radio interviewer in Chicago. He also appeared in Ken Burns’s documentaries on baseball, jazz, and the Civil War, as well as in a handful of movies, most notably John Sayles’s “Eight Men Out” (1988). For More on California,

Go, Do, See Red Rocks Park
If you think of Red Rocks Park as just simply a beautiful place to see a concert, think again! All around you are 738 total acres of deer, pines and prairie, geological wonders and spectacular vistas.
At 6,450 feet above sea level, Red Rocks Park is a unique transitional zone where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains. The diverse environment allows visitors to see plants, birds and animals of both regions.
Then there is the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a geological phenomenon – the only naturally-occurring, acoustically perfect amphitheatre in the world. From Sting and The Beatles, to opera stars and U2, every artist aspires to play on this magical, spiritual and emotional stage.
Opened in 1941 with an outdoor seating capacity of more than 9500, It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2015. Hosting literally thousands of concerts and events over the past 75+ years, the history of entertainment at Red Rocks tends to follow the arc of popular culture and popular music. Opera, classical and chamber music performances of the early 1900s to 1940s gave way to the rock and roll and psychedelic music of the 1960s and 70s. Soft rock took over the venue for the majority of the 1970s. Performers then and now considered musical superstars of all genres to fill the amphitheatre, including jam bands, new age rock artists, alternative, indie, rap and hip-hop and now, EDM performers and DJs.

Places to Go:
Many years ago, Mrs. Stephens and her husband, the late potato-marketing pioneer L.E. Stephens, would go to the top of Bartz Hill in Pocatello and gaze out at the Portneuf Valley, Scout Mountain and the Snake River Valley. In 1998, ISU received a gift of $10 million from Mrs. Stephens. It was seed funding for the center that would bear the couple’s names.
When Mrs. Stephens was considering where to locate a state-of-the-art complex, President Bowen suggested Bartz Hill, on Bartz Way on the ISU campus. Mrs. Stephens agreed. June 10th, 2002, was the first day of construction. The first performance in the Stephens Center was “Man of LaMancha,” in October 2004 in the Beverly B. Bistline Theatre.
Music, dance, theatre, lectures and more bring the communities of Idaho State University and southeastern Idaho together in one spectacular locale: the $34 million L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center. Built primarily with the generous support of hundreds of private donors, the 123,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art complex debuted in October 2004. It crowns a Pocatello hilltop that offers vistas as inspiring as the artists who perform here. We invite you to join ISU in celebrating the performing arts in Idaho.
Activities, events and the 2021-2022 entertainment series will be announced soon. Visit https://www.isu.edu/stephens/events/ for details.

Dierks Bentley, an award-winning American Country singer- songwriter, released his debut album in 2003. Since then he has been creating a signature blend of tunes, part country, a bit of honky-tonk, part bluegrass sprinkled with some modern rock and roll. Growing up in Phoenix, Dierks, made his first trip to Nashville with his father at the young age of 19, which he plays tribute to in his song, “I Hold On”.
