Up Close: From the Editor

I admit it. I’m not much of a sports fan. I guess you could say I’m in the minority here. I can’t mentally get into rooting for a certain team until final championship games are played. Being from Missouri, I did find myself cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs when they competed at the Super Bowl for two years in a row.

Then there was the Interstate 70 Series when the St. Louis Cardinals played against the Kansas City Royals in the 1985 World Series. (I’m admitting old age here, aren’t I.) At the time, the family owned a rental store and the walls were lined with various TVs. Sofas sat in the middle of the showroom. As the store was closed on Sunday, we invited friends over after church on Sunday night for popcorn and a watch party. Some were Royals fans while others liked the Cardinals. By the end of the evening, the sofas were facing the TVs and chosen sides were back-to-back against each other. It was quite loud at times. Sometimes one half of the store - then the other side.

So when I started gathering article information for this month’s issue, I felt way out of my league. Some things I “thought” were sports activities were actually considered a hobby.

So what is the difference between a sport and a hobby, anyway?

I googled Wikipedia and the dictionary to distinguish the two. A sport is defined as a physical activity, generally involving some kind of physical skill and exertion. Competition between two or more individuals or two or more teams is involved. Whereas a hobby is defined as a pursuit outside one’s regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation. It’s something you do for fun, rather than a possible primary vocation.

Anyone who has played any type of sport – whether it is an individual or a team sport – knows that the goal of sports is to win.

Whether it is to win a game, match, race, etc., it doesn’t matter.

Winning is how the players or participants (especially professionals) know and feel like they are successful and accomplished when they win.

With these definitions, I claim this summer’s festivals as sports because we have competed against all the odds of COVID-19 and won. Festivals are returning to the calendar. Schedules are filling fast. So we win! Let’s Go to a Ball Game AND a couple festivals listed in this issue!

Cooking With a Purpose It’s time.

Let’s go!

But first, please allow me to give you a word of advice: make your reservations early.

It seems everyone is planning a trip this summer. And by everybody, I do mean every single one.

As a result, hotels, resorts and campsites are filling up quickly.

Yes I can honestly say, during the past few weeks, I have not spoken with anyone who is not planning a summer trip. For me, the summer begins with a response to the historical command stating, “Go west, young man!”

My reasons for this trip are a bit different than theirs, but I am heading west nonetheless. I am going with a Disaster Relief Recovery Team to an area affected by the forest fire last fall. The details have not been finalized yet, but I do know I will be cooking for our team of volunteers.

This creates a new problem for me. You see, we will be in a high altitude area which requires some adjustments to cooking methods, particularly baking. I’ve done my research and the availability of high altitude recipes is limited.

However, I did find a few which I plan to try. If you live at sea level, this might not interest you, but it is good to know such things exist.

PERFECT HIGH ALTITUDE BISCUITS 4 c. flour scant 2 tablespoons baking powder 3/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt 1 c. (2 sticks) cold, unsalted butter cut into pieces 1 & 1/2 c. buttermilk, cold Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add butter and use a pastry blender until crumbs are the size of peas, using care not to overmix. Pour in buttermilk.

With a wooden spoon or hard spatula, incorporate just until mixed. Again, don’t overmix.

Lightly flour a flat surface. Transfer dough onto flour. The dough will look like it is falling apart, but that is normal. Shape the dough and lightly roll it into a ball. Roll out to about 1/2”thick. Fold and roll again to about 3/4” thick. Fold again and roll to about 1” thick.

Cut into biscuits. Tip: use a pizza

cutter to cut into squares in order to prevent overworking the scraps of dough created by cutting them in circles. Bake 1” apart on parchment-lined cookie sheet for 10-12 minutes or until done. Brush tops with melted butter if desired. Enjoy with gravy or jam.

At this point, you may be thinking this is somewhat out of the norm for the type of recipe I generally discuss this time of year.

You would be correct. However, rather than telling you about another picnic recipe, I figured you will be needing a hearty breakfast food to fuel your family for all the wonderful adventures which await your upcoming visit.

there’s never been a corporation formed for women’s tackle football, which I couldn’t believe,” says Jenkins. “There were charities and other kinds of businesses, but never a corporation.”

Tightwad Troubadours

For a great evening of live entertainment, this house band of country artists are featured on a weekly basis from April to November at the Truman Lake Opry in midcentral Missouri. Featured musicians are Jonathan Koch, lead singer who also plays rhythm guitar and piano. Terry Vick is the talented drummer and also sings.

Andrew Beeman plays steel guitar and lead guitar while Mark Conly plays the bass guitar, harmonizing with their partners. Among all her other duties, founder and owner D.D. Snider is a regular star vocalist.

You can even join in the fun on stage by singing Karaoke in The Torchwood Saloon, open every Friday night with no cover charge after the Opry Show is over. Also open every Saturday night for special music and Karaoke, there is a delicious food menu, opening at 5:50 p.m.

It all started three years ago when DD drove by the vacant building located on State Highway 7. It was for sale and the vision and inspiration began.

A lot of hard work and money was invested to remodel and refurbish the facility before placing it on the map as “hometo the Truman Lake Opry.”

When asked why settling near Tightwad, Mo. instead of Branson where country music fans

swarm, DD answered, “I’ve already been there done that.” After spending several years in the entertainment world, she decided less competition and a high-traffic area would be a more attractive draw to customers.

Heli-Skiing

Ice climbing

Ice climbing is the sport of climbing glaciers and other inclined ice formations. Unlike rock climbing, ice climbing involves more swinging and pounding (of ice picks) to get your stance.

Bore Tide Surfing . A bore tide is a wave of seawater that forms when the tide shifts as it returns to a shallow and narrowing inlet from a broad bay.

It occurs after extreme minus low tides created by the full or new moon.

There are more than 60 bore tides around the world, but only a few are known as extreme. Alaska has one of them in the Turnagain Arm on the Cook Inlet south of Anchorage. The best times for surfing the bore tide (or at least watching it) is near the spring and fall equinoxes in March and September, respectively.

Caution: the biggest hazard to surfing a bore tide is getting stuck in the mud flats and drowning on the incoming tide.

Mountain Climbing Alaska has all ten of the top ten tallest mountain peaks in the USA! Denali, of course, is the big one, towering at 20,310 feet. About 1,000 people per year attempt the summit Denali, with an average of 3 resulting in death (often from descent and/or falls).

Camelback Ranch

A state-of-the-art baseball facility like no other, Camelback Ranch-Glendale celebrates its thirteenth year as the Spring Training home of the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced significant policy changes in 2021. Camelback Ranch-Glendale will adhere to local, state and Major League Baseball protocols to address the pandemic A socially-distanced capacity of 2,400 seats (18 percent of full capacity) has been created. Camelback Ranch is open for visitors from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours during Spring Training.

Red Sox will select 10 lucky dads to participate in a “Father’s Day Talk with the Sox,” featuring an hour-long conversation with Red Sox Hall of Fame pitcher Tim Wakefield. The GoPro Mountain Games are the country’s most celebrated festival of adventure sports, art and music and they return to Vail, CO June 10-13, 2021 Keep in mind that the Town of Vail and its hotels, restaurants, and miles of outdoor hiking and biking trails will still be open and active during the GoPro Mountain Games. Visitors are encouraged to come to the Town of Vail and enjoy, while still committing to state and local public health guidelines.

The Vail Valley Foundation is working closely and in conjunction with public

The Wai Kai Wave was created in collaboration with Oahu’s-own Shane Beschen (a partner in The LineUp at Wai Kai’s operating company), X Games Gold Medalist and a former world #2 ranked surfer, and his young gun surfing son Noah.

“The surfing will be similar to Oahu’s Waimea Bay river wave that flows periodically when the sand bar opens up after heavy

rainfall periods – but on steroids,” said Shane. “Everything from high speed carving turns to sections for attacking the lip or doing airs are all possible here. It creates the perfect on-demand setup.”

The Wai Kai Wave overlooks the 52-acre Wai Kai Lagoon, which will offer a sheltered area for stand up paddling, kayaks, guided outrigger canoes, and piloted electric boat cruises. Major surf and waterman competitions are being planned for the Wai Kai Wave and Wai Kai Lagoon.

Along a portion of the Lagoon waterfront will be restaurants and areas for pop-up retail, events and recreation to appeal to visitors and residents alike interested in wellness, arts and culture.

A Most Perfect Village

COOPERSTOWN - The small village of Cooperstown, located in the foothills of New York’s Northern Catskill Mountains, is a total charmer. Destination: Biking is a great way to explore Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

Biking Experience: Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail Description: Just minutes from the Alabama Gulf Coast beaches is a 28-mile trail system within Gulf State Park’s 6,180-acre footprint. Winding through six of the park’s nine distinct ecosystems and offering several direct-access trailheads, the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail sits between the sister beach towns of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. part of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trails. The trail even offers cyclists an amazing camping area: the Outpost features three primitive campsites, which are only accessible by bicycle or walking.

The park recently introduced a free bike share program, which allows visitors to borrow one of 200 bikes for up to three hours at a time.

Many choose to stop and enjoy a leisurely break at Lake Shelby’s picnic area, the Butterfly Garden on Catman Trail or one of several newly constructed observation areas. Trails also provide access to the park’s interpretive and nature centers, beach pavilion, fishing pier and new lodge and conference center.

Beyond Gulf State Park, roadside trails offer more opportunities for exploring the island. In Gulf Shores

you’ll find a multi-use path westward along Fort Morgan Road (Highway 180) for more than five miles. Sidewalks and bike lanes line both neighborhood streets and Gulf Shores Parkway (Highway 59). Beach Boulevard (which extends from Gulf Shores and through the park and into Orange Beach) is lined with bike lanes, taking riders among the white sand views of the beachfront as well as offering convenient access to accommodations, restaurants, and retail stores.

Water Sports in Gulf

GULF COUNTY–There are bays and inland waters. There are places like the Stump Hole and the Dead Lakes. Places for fishing and places for floating. From any spot in the county, it’s never more than a five-minute trip to one of these waterways and the means to enjoy them are as varied as the landscape.

Located on the central Gulf coast, Gulf County is just two hours southwest of Tallahassee

The water-related activities here are diverse and, of course, visitors are encouraged to find their own way to enjoy them. Here are some tips for the best ways to experience some of Gulf County’s best spots.

Eco-tours–The most unexpected experience in the county may be an outing on the Dead Lakes, located in the inland community of Wewahitchka. The freshwater

lakes are named for the thousands of hollow cypress stumps that remain after sand bars formed in the Chipola River. The stumps are joined by beautiful cypress and White Tupelo trees, along with a host of fish and wildlife.

Shelling and snorkeling–Gulf County is well-known as a great shelling and snorkeling location and the calm, shallow waters here are the best around for these pursuits. Exploring near the Gulf shoreline for shells at low tide and discovering the wildlife while gently swimming amid the grass beds of St. Joseph Bay are invitations to learn more about the creatures that inhabit these waters.

Fishing–The variety of options, whether inshore, offshore or inland, makes this an angler’s dream location. To the north, there are Largemouth Bass and Crappie to be found in the Dead Lakes, Apalachicola River or Lake Wimico. St. Joseph Bay, Indian Pass Lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway are popular spots for Speckled Trout, Redfish and more. A favorite surf fishing spot for locals is the Stump Hole on Cape San Blas. And of course, the Gulf of Mexico is easily accessible for offshore species like grouper, Amberjack and snapper.

Paddling–The pristine waters

of St. Joseph Bay are a favorite among paddlers, who know dolphin and sea turtle sightings are bound to add to the excitement of a fun day on the water.

But whether gliding on St. Joseph Bay, taking an outing from St. Joe Beach or exploring amid the wild beauty of the Dead Lakes, adventure abounds for paddlers.

Taking in the sunset–There may be no more relaxing way to enjoy the waters than to watch one of Gulf County’s amazing sunsets.

Charter cruises are available, but many choose to just enjoy the beauty with their toes in the sand at one of the many local beach access points.

Hook, line and sinker, Albany, Georgia, wins the trophy when it comes to fly-fishing, canoeing, kayaking and outdoor summer explorations in South Georgia.

At his side was Vera Pigee, who led the young African American members of the Youth Council to enter the white-only section of the Clarksdale bus station in protest. She was known for holding meetings, classes, literacy drives, voter registration and other Civil Rights gatherings in her beauty parlor.

North Judson Mint Fest

Indiana’s only mint festival is celebrating its 44th year with the new theme, “Refresh Mint” according to Festival President Donna Henry. “That kind of says it all, huh?” she informed the town council when obtaining the special event permit for the occasion.

This festival has been held annually on Father’s Day weekend since 1977 in downtown North Judson and the North Judson Park. It’s a celebration of mint, mint farming & mint production with several different mint-related activities. A Cooking with Mint contest will be featured. Cooking With Mint cookbooks will also be available for sale. These contain recipes from past Cooking With Mint contestants.

Mint oil and mint plants will also be provided by local mint farmers.

Other family-friendly activities include live entertainment, food concessions, craft venders, a pedal tractor pull, and Frog Jumping contest. There is a 5k run on Saturday and a parade scheduled on Sunday.

The North Judson Mint Festival has been voted

‘Starke County’s #1 Festival’ several times over the years! The Mint Festival has had a showcast on ‘Experience Michiana’, and has been mentioned in magazine articles, newspapers & websites.

The 17th Annual Gathering of Great Lakes Nations Pow Wow is a celebration of the Great Lakes Native Americans and their culture. It features Native American drums, singers, and dancers from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday June 12 and from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Sunday June 13. Performances are 12 noon and 5 p.m. Saturday, June 12 and at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 13. Other activities on both days include Native American vendors from Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina. Native American foods, a pre-1840 re-enactment camp complete with artisan demonstrations, and children’s activities. Open to the public; Admission $3.00 children under 12-Free; Maximum $12/ car. Parking is free. Camping is available on site $10- $15 per night.

National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture, Inc. was formed as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 educational organization. The Center is composed of Native and non-Native members whose mission is to continue and preserve traditional Great Lakes Native American art, history and culture by helping pass those traditions on to Native People and by educating the general public about the importance of Great Lakes Native peoples, their art, history and culture. NCGLNAC owns nearly 30 acres (generously donated by the Jay County Fair Board) of beautiful, wooded land, complete with pond and wetlands, located just north of the Jay County Fairgrounds in Portland. The first ethno-botanical hiking trail was opened to the public in 2008.

In addition, a percentage of the gate admissions will be donated to the Jay County Human Society.

Field of Dreams This baseball field and pop-culture tourist attraction was originally built for the movie of the same name. It is in Dubuque County, near Dyersville.

Universal Pictures built the baseball diamond on two farms, a few miles outside Dyersville for the 1989 film Field of Dreams. When production completed, the baseball diamond created for the movie was left behind. Most of the baseball field, including the diamond and the adjacent house, was on a farm owned by the Lansing family, but the left and center field were on an adjacent property owned by the Ameskamp family. The field was built across the two properties because the producers wanted to place the field in a location where sunset shots would have a clear line-of-sight.

After filming completed, the Lansing family kept their portion of the field intact, and sold souvenirs.

The Ameskamp family returned their land to farming for a year, but then restored the remainder of the field and opened up their own souvenir stand.

The two owners had operated separate tourist facilities, at odds regarding commercialization of the site.

In 1990, Keith Rahe, a neighboring farmer, put together a baseball team dubbed the “Ghost Players” to entertain the visitors at the field. The team’s presence at the field on Sunday afternoons once a month attracted thousands of additional fans to the field. In 1991 and 1992, the Upper Deck Company sponsored a celebrity game at the field. Hall of Famers like Bob Gibson, Reggie Jackson and Bob Feller competed against Hollywood stars like Kelsey Grammer and Meat Loaf in a charity game.

The two games raised over $100,000 for charities.

Step back in time and place while touring the inside the Field of Dreams farm house. During this live, guided 30-minute tour, you will hear stories about the home

from its early days as the Lansing family homestead in the early 20th century to its rebirth as the set for the Kinsella family in the 1989 fantasy classic.

Fans can spend the night in the newly remodeled three-bedroom farm house and enjoy the “Kinsella Experience.” Guests will be greeted personally by the Movie Site staff and will receive a complimentary gift basket.

The house is available for rent year round and can accommodate groups of up to seven.

Construction began on a Major League Baseball regulation field and stadium in 2019 with a maximum capacity of 8,000 to host the first-ever regular-season Major League Baseball game in Iowa originally set to feature the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the MLB at Field of Dreams was postponed to 2021, with an official date of Thursday, August 12. It has been confirmed that the original matchup for the game will be honored between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. The White Sox will be the home in the matchup because of their role in the 1989 Field of Dreams movie, in which the ghosts of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and other members of the 1919 Black Sox play on the diamond in the Iowa cornfield.

Humble Hometown Hero

The Roger Maris Museum is a 70-foot (21m) display case museum in West Acres Shopping Center in Fargo, North Dakota. It is dedicated as a permanent shrine to Major League Baseball player and local alumni Roger Maris, centering on his life and baseball career, most notably for the New York Yankees during the 1961 season in which Maris hit a then-record 61 home runs.

The museum is open during mall hours and is free to the public.

When approached with the idea of creating a museum in his honor, Roger Eugene Maris (September 10, 1934 – December 14, 1985) – who hit a Major League Baseball record 61 home runs during the 1961 season for the New York Yankees, breaking Babe Ruth’s single-season record of 60 home runs in 1927 – declined. Have Fun at the Fair

The Dates for the 2021 Marion County Fair are June 28 – July 3. The fair will kick off at noon in the Evers Arena with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony. The announcing of the livestock royalty and the coronation of the Junior Fair Royalty will take place immediately after the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The six-day event features livestock shows, horse shows, dog shows, arts and crafts exhibits, evening performances, rodeos, merchant vendors, senior citizens, veterans and kids days, rides, and of course the ever popular fair food. Special Senior Citizens Day activities will take place Monday beginning at 10 a.m. in the picnic pavilion.

The fair runs through July 3. The evening activities will end that evening with a spectacular fireworks event starting at 10 p.m. The fireworks can be seen from the grandstand or anywhere on the fairgrounds.

One - day admission at the gate is $8 for anyone age 11 and over. Season passes are on sale at the fair board office for $25 (does not include rides).Rides are $1.50 per ticket or an unlimited all-day wrist band is $14.

Three days have discount admissions with different themes connected. Monday, June 28, from 8 a.m. to noon is “Canned Food Day,” “Sr. Citizens Day,” and “Ladies Day.” Anyone who brings a

canned food item will be admitted FREE. Kids Day is Wednesday, June 30. Those ages 12 and under will be admitted FREE from 8 a.m to noon. Ride tickets will be open at 10 a.m. this day only and are not included with the free admission. On Friday, July 2, from 8 a.m. to noon is Veterans Day. Things To Do:

New attractions and events have been added to the annual Miami Valley Steam Thresher’s Show and Reunion this year! The 72nd annual event is scheduled for July 15 - 18.

Located in the beautiful Pastime Park it will feature Massey Ferguson/Harris brands of farm equipment and machinery. You will be able to enjoy not just the large display of tractors, steam and gas engines, but also watch them being used in demonstrations throughout the day.

Lawn mower pulls, a grand parade through downtown, touch a truck/tractor, steam engine spark show, tractor/truck pulls and so much more, all included for $5 admission.

To add some spice to the fun, some new activities have been scheduled that are different from past years, according to Amber Martinez, MVSTA secretary. “We are doing a Touch-a-truck on Thursday from 5 - 8 p.m.” she said (see more information at right).

Also new, Thursday will be only $2 for past and present military.

Thursday will be considered Family Fun night as well. “Thursday evening we will have egg toss, skillet and sledge hammer toss, cow paddy bingo, face painting, extreme bubbles along with the touch a truck,” Amber said.

Washboard Festival

LOGAN - Completely run by a group of dedicatties will be offered at 1 p.m. This will be a fun-filled ed volunteers, the most unique festival returns to workout. the streets June 17 through June 19. This year they celebrate their 20th year in the hometown of the longest-running washboard factory.

“We are excited that some new features are being introduced this year as well,” said Sharon Grossman, president of the festival. “We are initiating quiet hours for people with sensory needs as well as including activities for persons with disabilities once again this year.”

Also, a new feature is craft demonstrations by Olde World Artisans who will make an item while people can watch. Then this item will be auctioned off to the public on Saturday. Over time, the goal is to bring in more Artisans making traditional crafts as this fits so well with the washboard theme, Sharon explained.

Live entertainment will be presented by Sugarcreek Bluegrass and The Isaacs on Thursday. Barefoot McCoy performs at 4 p.m. Friday, followed by Three Rivers Bluegrass, Coal Cave Hollow Boys and The Cleverlys. A children’s chorus and the local high school choir will be on stage Saturday afternoon. The Goldsberrys perform at 4 p.m., followed

by The Devil Doves and The Live 35 Band. Be sure to bring your own lawn chairs for the music performances and stay awhile.

Lilyfest

Gardeners of all levels can learn something at Lilyfest. Reserve time to celebrate 30 years of outdoor education

ROCKBRIDGE – It’s been three decades since Bobbi Bishop and her late husband Bruce started an art festival on their property with the intent of giving local artists an outlet to sell their work. In the time that has eclipsed since 1992, Lilyfest has grown along with generations of musicians, artists, master gardeners, naturalists, and horticulturalists. Book release and signings have been held there, garden artwork purchased at Lilyfest dots the gardens of landscaped homes throughout the Midwest, and thousands of tourists fill cabins and hotels to the brim every July.

Billed as the premier art and garden destination within the Hocking Hills region, the 30th anniversary celebration is extra special this year because last year’s event was disrupted by the pandemic. COVID-19 shifted the festival to become virtual in 2020,

which made it accessible to everyone. Yet the grounds were much quieter, explained Bishop.

“We missed everyone so much last year, and we want everyone to come back so we can see them,” she said, noting there are regulars and new faces she appreciates seeing each year.

“Please come back. We missed you so much,” she continued with a jovial laugh. It’s the kind of laugh and sense of humor that has helped create a sense of community among newbie gardeners and green thumbs alike. New gardeners can volunteer at Lilyfest’s home, Bishop Educational Gardens, to learn tips and tricks from those with more experience, including Bishop herself.

“If you want blue hydrangeas, add an acidic to the soil,” she explained while walking along a row of them in a flower bed near the main stage. “If you want red ones, add lime.”

Its tips and tricks like these that make Lilyfest so special. If there’s a problem area in someone’s yard where trees won’t grow, there’s

a reason and someone at Lilyfest probably knows the answer. It’s also possible they’ll take your name and number and call you with the answer if they don’t immediately know.

According to Bishop, the most important tip and trick for newbie gardeners should be not to go big to start with. “Don’t overwhelm yourself. It should be fun and relaxing to care for a garden, and not a struggle,” she said.

Reservations must be made in advance at Lilyfest’s website this year, www.lilyfest.com in an effort to stay at a reduced capacity because of health concerns related to COVID-19. All health guidelines will be followed and organizers are working closely with the Hocking County Health Department and monitoring new guidelines as they emerge.

Getting Outdoors

DUPLIN COUNTY, –You don’t have to look far to see the wide variety of outdoor activities that make Duplin County a popular spot to get out and explore. Duplin is located in eastern North Carolina, between Raleigh and Wilmington along Interstate 40. Many pass through on their way to North Carolina’s popular beaches. Many more have discovered this is the perfect spot to experience so much more of the beauty and diversity of this Carolina region.

For a day on the links, Duplin’s golf courses offer the perfect challenge. Duplin Country Club in Kenansville is a favorite with its fairways flanked by tall southern pines and lush wetlands. Coalfields Cookoff BBQ “Come for the Meat and Stay for the Ride” This is the theme for the inaugural WV Coalfields Cookoff WV State BBQ and ATV Festival, June 12th in Welch.

The festival, hosted by the city, will feature the WV State BBQ Championships sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society for pro cookers and backyard BBQ teams, as well as music, including a battle of the bands, family activities, a beer garden, a public BBQ tasting, and several ATV contests. It promises outdoor summer fun for the whole family in a safe outdoor space.

“The WV Coalfields Cookoff entice BBQ cookers, ATV enthusiasts, and the general public to visit the great city of Welch, WV,” said Harold McBride, Sr. Mayor of Welch. “We are currently inviting BBQ teams, sponsors, vendors and bands to sign up on our website to participate in the event. In addition to the professional and backyard BBQ cook-off, music contests, arts and crafts, food vendors, the Beer Garden for our guests age 21 and older, and the Kids Korner for our younger audience, we really have something for everyone at this event.”

Welch is known for being the heart of WV Coal Country. The surrounding mountains are home to the Hatfield McCoy Trail, that is a popular ATV route. Since the town welcomes ATV enthusiast into the city to enjoy the attractions, the idea was born to pair
