A Bavarian Alpine Village

By Robin O’Neal Smith Associate Editor

Did you know you can find a slice of Bavarian life in the Southeastern United States? Helen, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is renowned for its charming cobblestone alleys and epic Oktoberfest celebrations. Whether you’re a history buff, hunting for authentic German food, or searching for a peaceful getaway to kick back and relax, this quaint town is the perfect extended weekend getaway.

Helen is a small town in the mountains of Northeast Georgia along the Chattahoochee River. It’s known for its Bavarian architecture and alpine charm, making it a unique destination in the southern United States. I visited Helen last fall with several other writers and fell in love with this charming town and its recreation of a Bavarian Alpine village.
