Ride-The-Wind And Get Nose To Nose With An Alligator
By Rebecca Embry
To say the least, this was a thrilling airboat ride with Captain Randy and his private air-boat charger company, Ride-The-Wind. And that’s exactly what we did - we rode with the wind!
You would think the Everglades would provide a slow glide through marshy grasses, maneuvering ever-so-carefully not to disturb the animals below the surface. Nope. Not even close.
With the roar of the engine revving to life, I felt a surge of excitement as the wind immediately whipped past us and we sped across the water, leaving a trail of spray in our wake. Captain Randy navigated with precision, weaving through narrow channels and skimming over shallow marshes with ease.
As we picked up speed, my heart pounded with exhilaration. The thrill of the open air, the rush of adrenaline—it was an experience unlike any other. But it wasn’t just the speed that made this adventure unforgettable. The natural beauty surrounding us was nothing short of breathtaking. The vast expanse of the Everglades stretched out before us, teeming with life and wonder. Captain Randy is extremely knowledgeable about this area and shared various points of interest, making sure we got a a full-scale tour of life within the Everglades. He has over 40 years of air boating experience under his belt, plus a stint as a scuba diver for NASA Space Center.
As we ventured deeper into the heart of this untamed wilderness, I couldn’t shake the feeling of awe and reverence. But amid the tranquility of nature, there was always the thrill of the ride. And aligators. REAL aligators. BIG aligators. While the others in my party insisted the aligator that came right up to our boat was fishing for fishfood, I was convinced it wanted people food. It’s jaws quickly snapped open and I did not wait to see what it was snapping at. Like the speed of light, I jumped up and was across to the other side of the boat in a split second. The others in my group laughed and explained it was after a fish but I didn’t see any fish.
As our journey came to an end and we returned to the dock, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experience. Ride The Wind gave us more than just a thrill ride. It was an entertaining, educational, enlightening tour that gave me a new perspective on the Everglades.
