fter playing the character of Ridge Forrester on the US soap opera ‘The Bold and The Beautiful’ from 1987 to 2012 – an impressive 25 year stint – Ronn Moss has become a pop culture icon.

It’s hard to mention his name without someone piping up with their opinion on his infamous on-screen love triangle with Brooke and Taylor. But Moss is also a musician – most well known for the 1977 hit ‘Baby Come Back’ – and come November he and Player bandmate Peter Beckett will be heading to Rooty Hill RSL to entertain fans with music and a few extra special treats for ‘Bold and the Beautiful’ fans. “I’m going to have a big screen behind me and I’m going to show some behind the scenes footage of ‘Bold and Beautiful’ that I personally have taken over 25 years,” Moss said. “The people in Australia are going to see this footage for the first time. Nobody on the show has ever seen it, nobody on the crew has ever seen it, so I’m testing it out in Australia for the first time.” The show, titled ‘An Evening with Ronn Moss’ will give fans a chance to get up close and personal with Moss. “I’m going to have a one on one rapport with the audience,” he said. “That’s the thing I’m looking forward to. They can ask me questions, we can talk, we can bullshit, we can kid with each other, it’s going to be kind of a real intimate evening and then add the rock n roll on top of that.” Since leaving ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ – a show that attracts over 350 million viewers per episode – in 2012 Moss has been working on a few different projects including producing and acting in a TV series called ‘The Bay’. The show follows Sara Garrett, a socialite who resides in the fictional Bay City. Ronn plays the character of Johnn Blackwell. When asked if he favours acting work, producing, or the music side of things, Moss is quick to explain that when it comes to creative endeavours he can’t choose a favourite – and wouldn’t want to either. “It’s like having your cake and eating it too. That’s always been a weird expression to me. Why would you want cake if you can’t eat it? Why would you want to have

something you can’t touch? So for me doing the acting is wearing one hat, doing the music is wearing another hat. I’m starting to do producing. I’m producing projects so that’s yet another hat,” he said. Though Ronn Moss has left the show, the character of Ridge Forrester has lived on, now being played by former ‘All My Children’ actor Thorsten Kaye. Moss – and no doubt many of his devoted fans – have some concerns as to whether the character should have lived on after his departure. “I did what I did on the show and I do wish that they had given that new actor a chance to do a new character rather than having to fill the shoes that I left after 25 years,” said Moss. “It’s just not something that they’re able to do and it’s not working out that well. They should have given him a new character. So, you know, I have to let it go. It is what it is. I’ve moved on.” The show involves what has to be the soap opera world’s most well known love triangle between Ridge Forrester, business woman Brooke Logan and psychiatrist Dr Taylor Hayes. After going back and forth between the two women for over two decades Moss believes the best choice for Ridge is to not have to make a choice at all. “I used to think ‘oh he’s being wishy washy, oh he’s being indecisive’, all that and then it hit me, ‘wow he’s been able to go back and forth between these two beautiful, amazing women for 25 years’. I don’t see anything wrong with that, let’s just keep that one going,” he said. But just how do you keep playing the same character for 25 years? “I had to make it interesting to myself and if it was interesting to me hopefully it was interesting to the people watching. Because there were times, I must admit, there were times when I got bored,” he said. “There were times when I really got freaking bored of the whole thing and I thought, ‘okay I can’t keep doing this, I’ve got to find something to bring myself back to this so that everybody’s interested’.” The show’s popularity speaks for itself and Moss is grateful for their support, watching the show each week. “It all adds up to, hopefully, [people] wanting to go along and be a part, like a fly on the wall and watch these people’s lives,” he said. An Evening with Ronn Moss will be on at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, November 14. Tickets are $50-$55. To purchase tickets visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au.

LOST & FOUND 1ST BIRTHDAY PARTY PEACHTREE HOTEL SAT, NOVEMBER 8

Famous for being famous, Jenner is the stepbrother of Kim Kardashian – Bruce Jenner is his father – and is certainly no stranger to the spotlight. Come Saturday, November 8 the reality TV star and model will be making an appearance in Penrith to host the DJ event ‘Lost & Found 1st Birthday Party’ at the Peachtree Hotel. “I am super excited! Especially in the summer time,” Jenner said about his trip down under. Joining Jenner will be a host of DJs including Filip With An F, Zilr and local Penrith musician and socialite Mora Loui, who will be starring in ‘City Of Churches’, a reality TV show set in South Australia

which is due to air next autumn. The birthday celebrations will include photo booths, jumping castles, stilt walkers, promo dancers and of course it wouldn’t be a party without birthday cake and fairy floss. Between party commitments Jenner will be taking the opportunity to make the most of his trip to our shores. “I grew up in Malibu which is a surf town and I have always loved the waves out here in Australia. So relaxing and surfing are two massive things on the agenda for this trip plus working on my clothing brand The Mad Hueys,” said Jenner. It’s a busy time for Jenner, who is still filming for the Kardashians. “At the moment I am travelling allot with DJing plus filming the new season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” he said. The DJ event ‘Lost & Found 1st Birthday Party’ hosted by Brody Jenner will be on at the Peachtree Hotel on Saturday, November 8. Presale tickets are $20 for general admission and $65 for VIP tickets which include a meet and greet with Brody Jenner. To purchase tickets visit www. lnfbirthday.eventbrite.com.au.

Dami Im – the most recent winner of reality TV show ‘The X Factor’ – is back with a new release ‘Heart Beats’. The talented singer’s previous self titled album – released after her win on ‘The X Factor’ – debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums chart and featured the single ‘Alive’ along with a collection of covers that Dami performed during her time on the show, including Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’, Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ and Miley Cyrus’s ‘Wrecking Ball’. ‘Heart Beats’ sees Dami tackling original pop tracks, with the first two singles released from the album both making it to number 11 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. One of those singles is ‘Gladiator’, a pop anthem reminiscent of Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’. It’s all about empowerment and strength, as Dami declares ‘I’m your knight in shining armour’. The second single ‘Super Love’ is an uptempo pop track that showcases Dami’s soaring vocals, which add to the uplifting and positive feeling of the track. After her cover heavy previous release it’s nice to hear Dami taking on some original tracks, allowing her the chance to develop her status as a pop star in her own right.

‘The Evil Within’ is definitely not a game for the faint hearted or those with a weak stomach. Players take on the role of Detective Sebastian Castellanos who is knocked out while investigating a mass murder and wakes to find himself in a terrifying world full of gruesome creatures. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as you explore your surroundings, not knowing what creepy site lurks around each corner. With limited resources it won’t be easy to survive,

especially when the world around you is constantly changing. Corridors, walls and even entire buildings shift form, keeping you forever on your toes and unaware of what’s going on around you. Creator Shinji Mikami, who also worked on ‘Resident Evil’, has done it again with an intriguing, scary and suspenseful storyline that will entertain and terrify gamers for hours on end.

SPECIALISING IN

‘The Rover’ is a dystopian thriller set 10 years after the world has collapsed in the wake of a global economic crisis. Living in the Australian outback, where people from around the world come to work in the mines, Eric, played by Guy Pearce is a bitter and hardened former soldier. He is a loner who roams the outback until his car is stolen by a group of men who abandon their wounded comrade Rey, played by Robert Pattinson. Rey, a naive young American man, is dragged along by Eric on a pursuit across the desolate landscape to track down and seek revenge on the gang that robbed him of his car. The film was directed by David Michod – who also worked on the critically acclaimed ‘Animal Kingdom’ – and was written by Michod and Joel Edgerton. ‘The Rover’ was chosen to be screened in the official selection at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and is sure to be popular with film buffs.

In ‘A Walk Among The Tombstones’ Liam Neeson stars as ex cop Matt Scudder. After witnessing an armed robbery while off duty Scudder accidently shoots and kills a young girl. After the tragic event he retires from the police force and takes on the role of an unlicensed private investigator. He is approached by Kenny Kristo – a very important man in the drug world – who wants to track down the people responsible for kidnapping his wife. After she was taken Kenny paid the ransom to have his wife returned to him but the kidnappers didn’t live up to their end of the bargain, killing her and returning her remains to Kenny. Once Scudder starts to dig a little deeper into the case he discovers that the people responsible for Kenny’s wife’s murder have killed before. This leads him on a chase to catch the twisted killers before they take another life. This is a crime thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. ‘A Walk Among the Tombstones’ is based on the book of the same name by Lawrence Block. It is one of a series based on the character of Matthew Scudder.

The dark horse who bucked to the top DAVID ELLIS

orses whose careers put them out there in the public eye, can generally be considered to have a pretty short future if they continually buck their owners at the most inappropriate of public moments. Such was the case with a steed named Adlai who – whilst considered the most-handsome in the Victorian Mounted Police at the time – unfortunately bucked overboard his commanding officer once too often and with exquisite timing. Instantly condemned to the knackery, Adlai was saved by Judy Rymill of Rymill Coonawarra fame who rescued him for a song – and responding to a female’s touch, he went on to become a champion in Dressage, Show Jumping, High Jumping and 3-Day Events here, and represented Australia in some at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Although Judy and Adlai have both passed on, Adlai is now being commemorated in a wonderful new 2013 Rymill Cabernet Sauvignon ‘The Dark Horse,’ a wine with an as-lively a character as Adlai himself, and loaded with blackcurrant, mulberry and dark cherry flavours, rich chocolate undertones and hints of mint. At $23.95 reminisce about Adlai over this wine, roast duck and a cherry sauce. One to note: Fiano is a crisply dry white hailing from the Campania region of Southern Italy, and while not widely made in Australia its loyal following is growing. Family-owned boutique, Fox Gordon has an enticing Fiano it makes from fruit from the Adelaide Hills, and with white peach, nectarine and citrusy flavours coupled with interesting minerality, is a joy at $22.95.

This competition is great because it supports young designers in fashion

The road to success for budding fashion designers is long and rough. You don’t just become a Christian Dior or Coco Chanel overnight. In fact chances are that the large majority of those trying to make it into the industry will never release their own line and taste real success. For many, the opportunity to show their work on the runway will never come but for Australian school students, there is a rare chance for them to have their work seen and judged by industry professionals. Not for profit organisation Melbourne Fashion Festival, which delivers the largest fashion event of the year in Australia, Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, has opened applications to ‘Future Runway Presented by Spotlight’. This competition, directed at high-school students from across the country, gives the opportunity for young, talented designers to showcase their work. Last year, the competition saw dozens of students 16-years-old and over competing for the opportunity to have their designs showcased on the Festival’s runway. A total of 22 students won that opportunity. Now I am sure that there are budding designers living across the local area, wondering how they’ll get their work noticed and honestly, girls and boys, if there ever was a way to do it, surely this is it. This competition is like a mini and non-televised version of ‘Project Runway’, which is a program similar to ‘Next Top Model’ only for designers. In order to be in the running, applicants have to submit a creative journal that reflects the concept and style of their future collection, a design statement detailing the creative rationale of the collection and evidence of their sewing experience. And if successful, they’ll be sitting in the audience at a full-scale Festival produced fashion show watching their own designs trot down the runway on gorgeous models. Budding designers out there; imagine that feeling. In addition, finalists will receive a Spotlight mentorship and

What’s hot and what’s not for Christmas It’s nearly that time of year again and now is the time to start thinking about what you want to organise as gifts for your loved ones. At York Jewellers we are noticing trends towards dress rings with big splashes of colour using semi-precious gemstones like Tanzanite, Sapphire and Amethyst. Our designers are pairing these with small white diamonds surrounding the gemstone to give a real contrast and make the colour pop. Coloured stone earrings are another hot seller. These are great because they are generally more affordable in comparison to diamond earrings, due to the largest stone in the earring being a gem instead of a diamond. There are so many colours of gemstones available to choose from which means this also allows for a truly personalised gift. If you are thinking of giving something a little more classic to that special someone, diamond pendants are always in style. Something simple like a finely set round brilliant cut diamond on a sparkly chain makes for a beautiful gift. These can be taken from daywear to night-appropriate easily and allows for you to build on this as a collection by adding diamond studs later down the track. This goes for the gemstones mentioned above too, there’s plenty of options to build a whole set in the years to come. Remember this tip guys, it will come in handy later! It’s important to get your special orders for custom made pieces in as soon as you can as the workshop gets quite busy in the lead up to Christmas. We are taking custom orders now to be completed by the end of November. On another note, a big thank you from myself and the team at York Jewellers to those of you who attended out VIP Pink October event last week. We raised a decent amount of funds for the McGrath Foundation and are looking forward to seeing what the end result brings when the raffle winner is selected! Best of luck to those of you who have entered, and if you would like to there is still time – just head to our website www.yorkjewellers.com.au.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

With so many planets powering through your partnership zone, the buzz words for this week are cooperation, consultation and companionship as you do your best to concentrate on the needs of loved ones! The Solar Eclipse indicates a major turnaround to do with money matters or an intimate relationship.

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

If you accept things at face value (especially at work) you may find later that you were way off the mark. And double-check all appointments, as misunderstandings are likely. Are you stuck in a relationship slump? Have your partnerships become boring? The Solar Eclipse and Venus urge you to re-connect with your dearest friends.

The week gets off to a positive start with the Mercury/Jupiter sextile (which favours business, education, friendship, travel and convivial conversation). But remember that Mercury is still in retrograde mode until the weekend so it won’t all be smooth sailing! Jupiter (planet of generosity and abundance) encourages you to contribute more of your time and talents to your local community.

Keep an open mind as you absorb new financial information. Venus and the Solar Eclipse promise an increase in cash flow but you may cancel that out by indulging in a shopping spree. With Mercury moving forwards in your sign (and the Sun hooking up with Venus) it’s a wonderful weekend to converse, socialise, create and collaborate.

Star predictions for the week beginning October 19

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

If you want to win someone over, start a project, apply for a job, pitch an idea or clinch a deal, then the weekend is the time to do it. And if you communicate clearly and creatively with others plus dress to impress then you’ll make spectacular progress on whatever it is you choose to apply yourself to.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Mighty Mars is charging through your sign for one more week so don’t hesitate to grab lucky opportunities when they appear. If you set ambitious goals, maintain motivation and are passionately proactive, then your life will start to move in dynamic new directions. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great, painter Pablo Picasso: “Action is the foundational key to all success.”

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Casa Cancer is the place to be but, with Mercury retrograding through your domestic zone until the weekend there’s a backlog of chores to do around the house. The Solar Eclipse promises a period of nurturing old friendships and establishing new ones. And it’s a wonderful weekend to focus on family, friends and having fun.

When it comes to your ambitious goals for the future, are you kidding yourself Goats? With the Solar Eclipse and Venus both activating your hopes and wishes zone, it’s time to re-imagine your Capricorn aspirations. In order to sustain success, creative passions must be transformed into practical projects.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

What you do and say will be closely scrutinised by others, which suits you just fine. You don’t mind if people are clapping or criticizing – as long as you are being noticed, you’re happy! Saturday’s Sun/ Venus conjunction helps you pump up the charm at work and at home. Colleagues or loved ones are looking to you for dazzling creativity.

The Solar Eclipse stimulates your career zone so strive to create work opportunities and maximize your professional potential. But you may have to ditch a struggling project and start from scratch. Getting in touch with your considerate side sees you being extra cooperative on Saturday.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Mercury is retrograde from Monday through until Friday, so it’s a good time to revise and revisit as you plough through paperwork, research projects and tie up loose-ends. Then Mercury finally moves forwards on the weekend, so Sunday is the day to release the brakes and take action.

Type 2 Diabetes Market Research

It’s a great week to research a project or do some serious revision. Don’t skim over the surface, the devil is definitely in the detail. Many restless Pisceans are keen to travel, and the best time to take a heavenly holiday is from October 27 through until November 16. So start saving, planning, booking and packing as soon as possible!

spend too much time managing your property, delegate tasks instead

WW6547

Three simple tips for property investment Property investing could be a sensible approach to money matters and may just put you on the right path to a successful investment. To help you decide we’ve put together three guidelines that will help clear some confusion about investment loans… 1. Keep in mind a high level strategy or plan Have you found a great piece of property, and are now shopping around for the best possible loan? Before you commit to borrowing, think about what success would look like to you. Ask yourself difficult questions to ensure you’re prepared, rather than be surprised by unexpected changes. By creating a long term plan with smaller milestones, it will allow you to easily evaluate whether your investment is showing the returns you originally expected. This also helps to remove some of the uncertainty in managing the property. 2. Minimise the amount of time you spend managing your investment While it might sound strange to adopt a hands-off approach to managing your property investing, the more you’re able to remove yourself from the process, the more likely you’ll make rational decisions. Although you’ve contributed a large portion of your own money, the aim of a strong investment is to make a financially profitable return. If renovations are required, obtain quotes from painters and other tradespeople, in order to reduce your hands on time with the property. Allow the landlords and body corporate groups to take away some of the pressure where possible. This way, you can spend your time making strategic decisions that will be more beneficial in the long term. 3. Understand your ongoing expenses and find an easy way to keep track of them First touch base with your local BOQ branch to see what investment loans and options we have that might work for you. For example our Clear Path Variable Rate Home Loan has a low variable rate and no application fee. In addition to your investment loan repayments, factor in any fees and additional charges.

fresh and happy when the kids wake up. Your kids’ attitudes can reflect your own. Biggest health/fitness misconception? You don’t need to train seven days or even five days a week to be fit and healthy. Commit to time frames that are realistic to you. If I cannot do a specific class or activity I had planned I just try and fit in what I can when I can, even a quick run around the block. The training that you choose to do with the time you have makes a difference.

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy.’ Having a few roles in my life there is always a hurdle; sick kids, work and a house to be cleaned. But surrounding myself with positive motivated people, a supportive husband who sees how being fit and healthy improves our life style and going to a gym that is family oriented all help keep me going. Feeling good inside and out is a women’s best accessory. Freestyle - anything else you want to say? Believing in myself has probably been my biggest challenge with my fitness and my training. Pushing myself past thinking that I CAN’T and turning into I CAN has been a big turning point. This attitude has changed all aspect is my life for the better.

Not everyone is about losing weight so here are some tips for people trying to gain weight. Start with your main three meals and get a good mix of your protein, carbohydrates and fat. Some fats are great to have, so don’t worry about taking skin off chicken or separating egg whites. Don’t read a muscle magazine and don’t try diets that are for competitive bodybuilders losing weight such as cutting out things like nuts and avocados, or olive oil in your salad dressing. Coconut oil is a good, heat stable oil for cooking. Use plenty of real butter, put some cheese in your omelette with full fat milk. Eat carbs, like lots of vegies, oats and brown rice. If your legs look like two broomsticks stuck in a pair of shorts, it’s not the time to worry about low carb diets, you’re going to need lots of energy. Protein is easiest from animal and dairy type foods, and research generally suggests having about a gram of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. However there are different quality proteins so allow a bit more in your portions, even double it – but overloading with massive protein meals like a protein shake to wash down a 12 egg white omelette and half a kilo of chicken breast won’t make you grow any quicker. You also need to get some food in your stomach in between the main meals. Have some left-overs or handful of nuts, or have both. Some people find shakes a convenient way to get extra calories in, and you can make your own with whatever you like. You can put anything into shakes such as fruit, eggs, avocado, oats or coconut. You can also try some stranger things like peanut butter or yogurt, or LSA mix from a health shop. If you can eat it, you can put it in a shake. As for training, you want to get the most growth for least calorie output. So no endurance work. Hit the weights, but keep your workout to less than 60 minutes. Complete big, heavy, compound movements. Keep it under 15 reps per set, 3-5 sets. If you can get more reps put the weight up again. Get plenty of sleep. Those stick legs will look more like tree trunks in no time!

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I love motivating other participants and the best way to do this is to give my best, cracking a few jokes along the way and keeping the mood light hearted makes a work out that little bit easier to get through.

Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

DAVID STEIN

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? How it makes me feel not just physically but mentally. Without exercise I feel I have no outlet for any stress or anxiety that has built up. Exercise is not expensive, it is a lot cheaper than shopping.

How does fitness feature in your life? I am a mum, wife, friend, fitness instructor and customer service officer at YMCA and currently training to become a personal trainer. I started my fitness journey at age 32 after my second child. I had never been a member of a gym and done little to no exercise except for in my school days. I joined the YMCA on a family membership and quickly found that a gym class was the best medicine for a sleep deprived, anxious, run down mother of two. Yes, I was tired and had a million other things to probably do but once that hour was done, I was no longer tired. I was energised and mentally clearer. Exercise became that little something for me.

VIEW FROM ABOVE

Keep your pets cool on those scorching days

Jesus will help us pass God’s final test

As the weather heats up the risk of heat stress in pets rises. Heat stress is a syndrome that occurs when an animal’s body temperature exceeds 40 degrees and this will damage the blood clotting function. Death occurs from shock, internal bleeding and organ failure. Cats and dogs are very different to humans because they cannot sweat from their skin. In humans, air circulating past sweaty skin cools the blood internally, so a person can still function on 45 a degree day. Dogs and cats only sweat through their foot pads, and with their bodies covered in fur, they cannot easily cool down. Animals will pant to try and cool their internal body temperature but this is not very effective in extreme weather conditions. As with children, do not leave pets in cars, even briefly, especially in the summer months. The internal temperature of a car can rapidly reach extreme temperatures greater than 50 degrees. Commonly I see people jogging with their dogs on a hot day. Exercise naturally heats a dog and they cannot cool well when the ambient temperature is warm. Never let a dog do strenuous exercise when the temperature is above 25 degrees. It is sensible to only exercise dogs early in the morning, or in the cool of evening during our summer months. If extreme temperatures are predicted, then providing areas of shade or the cool of under the house will help. When temperatures greater than 40 degrees are predicted, leaving pets indoors with air conditioning is the best option. If this is not possible, then you can provide a child’s wading pool or plastic shell (left in a shady area) with only a few centimetres of water for dogs to lie in. Freezing water filled plastic bottles and placing them at the bottom of pet beds can also help cool down resting pets. You can provide ice blocks to entertain and cool a pet in the summer months. A large ice block may last for some hours. This can be made by freezing a 4 litre ice-cream container and then placing the ice block outside in the dog’s drinking bowl for them to lick as it melts. It is even more fun if some dried liver treats are frozen in the ice-block.

Thousands of Year 12 students are now sitting their HSC examinations. 13 years of schooling coming to an end in several weeks of tough exams. Once the exams finish, there is then weeks of anxious waiting as examiners pour over answers and assess major projects. Will a student’s results be good enough to gain entry into the career or course of their choice, or, if the student falls short, will it end in disappointment? Some people think this is how God will examine our lives at the end, making a decision whether we pass or fail. Is this what happens? Consider what the Apostle Paul says in the Bible’s book of Romans, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. In other words, none of us have reached God’s standard; we all fall short. Where does this leave us? Like a Year 12 student who misses out? Or is there another hope? See what Romans also says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” What great news! The Bible is saying that Jesus has sat the exam for us and he has been found to be perfect. Where we have fallen short, Jesus has passed and the success of that pass is made available to anyone who would look to Jesus and commit their life to him. You do not have to fear or be uncertain about what will happen at the last examination, because in every sense, Jesus is the answer! And to all the HSC students – all the best as you sit your exams!

In his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in the world of travel, David Ellis says one of Germany’s biggest shipyards is an amazing 42km inland, so ships that have been built there since 1795 have had to make the long, slow and winding journey all that way downriver through fields and farmlands to the open sea. And they do it backwards, because it’s easier for tugs to manoeuvre them that way. Meyer Werft has been building ships at its inland yard for over 200 years to avoid the impact wild North Sea storms can have on those yards on the coast, the latest being Quantum of the Seas

for Royal Caribbean International that launched just last month. At 168,666 tonnes and with berths for 4,900 passengers, it was the biggest ship ever to make its journey down the River Ems from the Meyer Werft yard. In places there was just over one-metre leeway between ship and shore; in others power lines had to be re-routed because of the vessel’s enormous size, and even bridges removed in others – including one carrying the main railway line linking Germany with Holland. Quantum of the Seas cost US$1b and is now in Holland for sea trials. It will begin its cruising career with a sailing from America to the Caribbean in November.

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

New safety partnership Fire and Rescue NSW join with NSW RSL Clubs to educate residents on fire safety around the home were there to announce the partnership and comment on its relevance, in particular, to seniors. “FRNSW’s latest research indicates older people… many of whom frequent RSL and other services clubs are at greatest risk from accidental fires in the home,” Mr Ayres said. “[These people] are incredibly committed to their communities but find themselves often living alone and reaching out to their local club for their sense of community.” Seniors who attend and are members of local RSL and Service Clubs can expect to hear the promotion of fire safety campaigns and have an opportunity to take part in education programs.

Veterans pass on healthy message

The staff of St Marys Outpost are promoting better health ach year Veterans’ Health Week highlights the need for veterans across Australia to improve their health and wellbeing. This year, the St Marys Vietnam Veterans Outpost held a number of activities centred around improving nutrition as part of Veterans’ Health Week, from October 13 to 20. On Tuesday the local group hosted a healthy cooking demonstration and tour of the Parramatta female factory and girls home to promote a healthier lifestyle. Local dietitians and exercise physiologists also spoke at the event. St Marys Outpost also run activi-

Lindsay MP Fiona Scott visited the Outpost this week to thank the veterans for their hard work. “I congratulate St Marys Outpost Veterans’ Centre and the volunteers for the work they do for our local Veterans as it makes such a positive and lasting difference to their lives and our community,” Ms Scott said. “Veterans’ Health Week is also an important opportunity to reconnect with support networks as one of our greatest assets is the bond we have as mates.”

Spring drive encourages more outdoor activity ith the warmer weather on the way, spring is a great time to start walking for your health. And with the support of the free Heart Foundation Walking program, it’s easy to do. With already more than 20,000 walkers across the country, the Heart Foundation is hoping to recruit a further 3,000 new walkers during spring. The Heart Foundation’s National CEO, Mary Barry, said the charity is in the middle of a major push to recruit thousands of walkers to help Aussies live more active, healthier lives. “Walking for just 30 minutes a day can help you maintain a healthy weight, increase fitness and strength, improve your self esteem and mental health, and cut your risk of heart disease by as much as 30 per cent,” Ms Barry said. “Heart Foundation Walking groups walk regularly all over Australia and are a great

or many people in the local area, the arrival of spring and summer means the worsening of allergy and asthma symptoms. Acknowledging this is Sensitive Choice, a community service program from the National Asthma Council Australia, which has launched a new campaign to help local residents make informed choices about household products and services that may relieve the impact of their asthma and allergies. “More than seven million Australians have allergies, including asthma, hay fever, allergic conjunctivitis and eczema,” said Associate Professor Sheryl Van Nunen from the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. “For many people, allergies are more than just an annoying inconvenience. They can really impact on quality of life and lead to days off work or school, or to missing out on fun with friends.” Doctors can prescribe medications and help identify allergy triggers, many of which live around the home like dust mites, moulds and pets. The Sensitive Choice program is about helping people to manage their triggers, and when shopping provides an easy way for customers to see which products are allergy friendly. “The program’s blue butterfly symbol is clearly displayed on approved products

F

Don’t let allergies get the best of you and we encourage shoppers to look out for this reassuring symbol,” Kristine Whorlow, the National Asthma Council Australia’s CEO. “Our new campaign ‘It’s about breathing’ aims to help even more Australians benefit from the program. A feature of the campaign is the launch of our new Sensitive Choice website, which has been designed to be easily accessible on your mobile or tablet, ideal for shoppers searching for asthma and allergy sensitive products on the go. You can also find great advice and resources to help you live well with asthma and allergies.” Visit sensitivechoice.com for information. - Katherine Tweed
