t can only be described as a terrible start to the year for Margaret Bedwell after precious family heirlooms were stolen in a break and enter at her South Penrith home on January 2. After a long day at work, Ms Bedwell and her partner returned home from work at around 5pm on Wednesday, January 2, to fi nd that the front door of their house in Dallas Avenue, South Penrith, was open. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We realised that someone had been through the house and when we checked on the safe, hidden in a cupboard in the bedroom, we saw

that the whole safe had been removed and stolen,â&#x20AC;? she said. Amongst the contents were passports, a sum of cash, but most importantly, the war medals that were earned by Ms Bedwellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grandfather, Arthur Mallindine when he served in the British Army during World War Two. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My grandfather served in the British eighth army in North Africa and was involved in the invasion of Italy. He was also at Dunkirk (France) and was one of the soldiers evacuated,â&#x20AC;? she said. The medals are irreplaceable and include a Star of Italy for his services in the Second World War. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a lot of money in the safe but the main thing is we just want the medals returned... Even

if they were placed in our mailbox,â&#x20AC;? Ms Bedwell said. She is particularly saddened because she had been minding the medals in the safe for her brother. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You think a safe is â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;safeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; but I guess not always... my brother and mother are very upset by all of this.â&#x20AC;? Ms Bedwell even had to cancel her holiday to the Sunshine Coast because of the break and enter. Penrith Police are investigating the robbery and forensic testing on fi ngerprints collected at the scene is being conducted. hen Chantel D’Orazio walks through the local shops in her usual work attire she attracts glances and whispers – that’s because not many people have seen a female fi re fighter before. Today, 3.52 per cent of NSW’s fi re fighters are female, but that is a vast improvement from just 1.1 per cent back in 2002. And Fire and Rescue NSW is hoping to encourage even more women to join the emergency service. “I joined last year in June so went through three months of training at the centre in Sydney and have been at Cranebrook Fire Station for the last four months,” she said. “When I told people that I was applying, many of them assumed that I was working in their offices, they couldn’t believe I would actually be a fi re fighter – you don’t see too many female fi re fighters and many people think that you actually cannot be one.” But, women are defi nitely allowed – they just have to pass the same stringent testing that is applied to all applicants. There are several steps in the recruitment process including online testing, medical testing and the Physical Aptitude Test (PAT), which requires all applicants to meet the same standards of physical fitness and ability. “When I passed the physical aptitude test I was so relieved because I was really nervous about it,” Ms D’Orazio said. “We did activities like the beep test, where you run a 20 metre distance and try to beat the beep, which gets faster. And we

also went through different skills tests like holding the hose, a ladder run, running up stairs in a seven storey building, and running through a maze with a fogged up gas mask on so you can’t see. “About a quarter of the people doing the physical test were women, and there were men who didn’t pass it, so it is defi nitely achievable!” Fire and Rescue NSW do recognise though that the physical test can be the most challenging aspect of the

recruitment process for women, so are helping women prepare for the test. “Fire and Rescue NSW has introduced practice, or familiarisation, sessions for the PAT, and this has improved the number of women making it through the application process,” a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said. “The practice sessions are available to all prospective candidates, but women have found them useful to understand, and prepare for, the level of fitness

required.” Ms D’Orazio said that she would like to see more women in the service as they have different skills that can be applied in fi re fighting situations. “Women are good at being compassionate, and we are working with all different people across the community so it is important to have that diversity reflected in our services,” she said. the time the Christmas decorations go up for another year. It’s hardly surprising that Sydney’s second airport has found its way back onto the agenda, particularly during the slow news period of Christmas and New Year’s. It would be political suicide in the bellwether seat of Lindsay for any party to back Badgerys Creek as a location; and despite Joe Hockey’s comments over the break, it would seem unlikely that Tony Abbott and Fiona Scott, on the verge of claiming Lindsay for the Liberals for the fi rst time since Jackie Kelly retired, would even entertain the suggestion. Should David Bradbury and Labor back the plan, it would only further embed the knife that appears to be hanging over Mr Bradbury’s career. It will be a big year for sport with the world of rowing to descend on Penrith for the World Rowing Cup in March; and on the rugby league field Penrith will be desperate to put a good season on the board as the battle with other sports in the region – particularly soccer, given the enormous success of the Western Sydney Wanderers – grows even further. Th ings have not been made easy for the Panthers with intense speculation hanging over the future of the club’s highest paid player, Michael Jennings, just eight weeks out from the start of the season. The end result of the Jennings saga won’t be changed by anything that I say here but one thing the Panthers must do, despite the enormous winds of change sweeping through the club, is start winning and the task won’t be helped by further disruption to the playing squad in the vital months of the pre-season. A few paragraphs back, I mentioned the Western Sydney Wanderers and they deserve to be considered as one of the great sporting successes of 2012/13. One can only imagine the force they will be once they have a full, settled pre-season unlike the one they had leading into their inaugural year. Whatever the year may bring, in about 12 months from now we’ll look back on it and discover plenty of highs, and a few lows - much like we do every year. Th is is the fi rst of 50-odd editions we have planned for you in 2013, but we’ve got a few surprises in store, too. So, if there’s any cobwebs still around from 2012 or the holiday period, dust them off, make 2013 your year – and jump on board for the ride. It’s better than being left at the station.

write this column a long way from home – in fact, I’m on a train somewhere between New York City and Boston. After a bunch of fl ights, airport coffee, tourist hotspots and the discovery of American bars that really leave our pokie-fi lled Australian pubs for dead, such a train trip is a great way to see some of the ‘real’ America. As the images of schools, parks, shopping malls and people going about their everyday business flash by and change by the second, it’s a great opportunity to ponder what’s ahead in the coming year, and there is very little doubt that 2013 promises to be an important year. But fi rst, a little about America. Outside of what appears to be a long-standing obsession with ‘Roseanne’ re-runs, most of the TV news headlines have focused on two crucial words: fiscal cliff. Th is is a country in the midst of enormous economic issues, and whilst it appears that a band-aid solution has been discovered to ensure much of the storm is avoided, there is still a feeling that many people here, as well as many businesses, are walking a tightrope where one failed step could result in disaster. Interesting, really, considering Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan’s deletion of the word ‘surplus’ from his vocabulary just prior to Christmas. We live in interesting fi nancial times. On the brighter side, I’ve contributed plenty to the American economy via useless tacky merchandise and t-shirts that will provide at least five minutes of enjoyment before they become dust collectors. I’ve also become an expert in the world of tipping – a system that actually does work, as it makes for excellent service in restaurants and bars, particularly given you have the ultimate say on whether everything was satisfactory or not. One thing I have also mastered is the cold. It’s been one or two degrees here most days but it’s probably a preferred option conpared to the weather that Penrith has experienced this week. So, I’ve started 2013 a fair way from home but when I do return soon, I’ll come back to what will be a year of significant change. Politically, it will be a watershed year, and a year of likely change with Tony Abbott tipped to be the Prime Minister by

number of local people who practice the Sikh faith have been left without a place of worship after a suspicious fi re consumed a temple in Jamisontown last month. Emergency services were called to the premises on Blaikie Road in the early hours of Sunday, December 30, shortly before 2.30am, to reports that the building was on fi re. NSW Fire and Rescue units from Regentville, Penrith, Cranebrook, Glenbrook and St Marys worked together to extinguish the fi re, however one end of the building was severely damaged; the other side of the building only affected by smoke damage. “The fi re appears to have started at the northern end of the building but the fi rst arriving crews were quick to knock down the fi re and prevent further damage, despite the fi re being through the roof,” said Station Commander Bruce Cameron from Regentville Fire and Rescue station. After the fi re was extinguished, a crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensics teams. There have been no developments in the case but Penrith Police are still treating the fi re as suspicious. “We are still actively investigating what we believe to be a suspicious fi re at the Blaikie Road temple. We have collected a number of exhibits that are being forensically examined,” said Penrith

Rotten start to new year Unfortunately this year Christmas morning and New Year’s morning both fell on a Tuesday which is our garbage pick-up day (Bins to go weekly, Western Weekender November 16). On Christmas morning the Green Bin was emptied at 2.15am and the other side of the street at 2.45am. Then the Red Bin was emptied at 5.40am and 5.50am. Pedestrian safety There has been a lot of talk over the years, particularly prior to election time, regarding the danger of pedestrians taking their lives into their own hands when crossing Victoria bridge. Recently it was observed that many school children also use the bridge walkway, particularly on sports days. Whilst consideration is being put to erection of a secondary bridge/walk/ cycleway the lives of adults and children are constantly at risk on a daily basis. Bearing in mind the current speed limit of 40km/hr in school zones, thought should be given to 24/7 speed limit of 40km/hr to apply to Victoria bridge. Shadow Treasurer stirs debate on Badgerys Creek CASSANDRA O CONNOR

hadow Treasurer, Joe Hockey, has ignited debate about Badgerys Creek airport after making controversial statements in the past week about the need for a second airport in Sydney. Mr Hockey was reported in the Daily Telegraph as saying that: “there should be no barrier to Badgerys Creek”. A spokesperson for Mr Hockey said the Shadow Treasurer has long advocated for a second airport in Sydney, recognising that the existing airport at Mascot is close to capacity and its limitations impact on passenger and freight movements. “Mr Hockey notes Badgerys Creek had already been identified by previous governments as the location for Sydney’s second airport,” the spokesperson said. “There is an opportunity for bipartisan support if the Government is to make its decision on a site before the election.” But any support for Badgerys Creek airport would severely hamper the Coalition’s hard work to have Liberal party candidate, Fiona Scott, elected as the Member for Lindsay. Ms Scott said that she does not support an airport at Badgerys Creek. “I welcome the debate about future airport needs but Western Sydney has already suffered from years of under investment in infrastructure by Labor governments at all levels and it does not have the necessary infrastructure to support a second airport,” she said.

Drugs arrest Police have charged an outlaw motorcycle gang member with supplying prohibited drugs. Police from Penrith Local Area Command formed Strike Force Tubbo to investigate the alleged supply of methylamphetamine in the Penrith area by a 35-year-old man. Following extensive investigation, at 1pm on Tuesday the man was arrested in a vehicle on Captain Cook Drive at Wilmot. A search of the vehicle by police revealed that there was 14 grams of methylamphetamine in the car. A search warrant was executed at the man’s Cranebrook home where police found steroids, and cash believed to be the proceeds of crime. The man is a member of the Rebels Outlaw Motorcycle Gang and was charged with four counts of supplying prohibited drugs and goods in custody.

PUBLIC NOTICE NSW Bike Plan â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;River Cities Programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Shared-Use Path â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Great Western Highway, Kingswood to St Marys The Roads and Maritime Services and Council are funding the design and construction of an off-road shared-use pedestrian and bicycle path along the Great Western Highway, between Bringelly Road, Kingswood and Victoria Park, St Marys, which will be carried out in stages up to the approved funding allocation. The 2.5â&#x20AC;&#x201C;3.0m wide off-road shared-use path will be located on the south side of the Great Western Highway. It will be available for use by pedestrians, including people with diverse abilities, cyclists who choose an off-road option, active families, tourists, shoppers and cycling commuters. The shared-use path will be signposted, marked with logos and linemarked. Some tree removal, tree trimming, road works and light pole relocation are part of the project. Driveway crossings will be adjusted to suit the appropriate design levels where necessary, which may include reconstruction of crossings in some instances.

ew Year is a time of celebration and optimism. So as we mark the start of 2013, we have much to be thankful for – we live in the best country in the world. We enjoy the benefits of peace and security. Our economy has proved to be resilient. But even for our fortunate nation, 2013 will bring its share of challenges – like playing our part on the UN Security Council to respond to threats like Iran’s nuclear program, the missile tests of North Korea and seeing our difficult mission in Afghanistan through. Five years on from the global fi nancial crisis, problems in the US and Europe still threaten global growth. Once again, we need to manage our economy carefully to keep creating jobs and ensure that our children enjoy lives of better opportunity than we do today. But, as we face these challenges, we can enter this year with the confidence that comes from having the right policies and capabilities to ensure we succeed in a changing and sometimes worrying world. So let’s start 2013 with a resolution to

Australia Day volunteers needed

During the week, I was on standby with my own local fi re brigade, the Davidson Rural Fire Brigade. Early on Wednesday morning, a crew from the Davidson Rural Fire Brigade was deployed to Nowra to assist with the fi res there and as a consequence, I joined this deployment. I have been a member of the Davidson Brigade since 2000 and was Deputy Captain between 2008 and 2009. During my absence, the Hon. Warren Truss MP will assume responsibility as Acting Leader of the Opposition. I thank Warren for his assistance. Warren visited fi re affected areas of Tasmania on behalf of the federal Coalition. It is important at this time to be cautious and heed the advice of emergency services authorities. I urge all people living in areas facing fi re risk at this time to monitor emergency messages carefully, activate their fi re plans and stay safe. POLICE SNAPSHOT Stabbing: Man robbed of phone in parklands About midnight on Friday, January 4, police allege that a 25-yearold man was stabbed in the chest whilst walking though parkland in Kingswood. The man was walking near Algie Street with a friend when they were approached by a man who demanded their property. The man then stabbed the 25-year-old after taking his phone and proceeded to flee from the area. The 25-year-old was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition. Time to cool down: Damaged pool sparks brawl Police were called to a home in Regentville at around 12.15am on Sunday, January 6, where a 20-year-old man had caused damage to the house and property. During the afternoon of Saturday, January 5, a 24-year-old man entertained seven of his friends at a party in a home in Regentville. At about 8pm the victim and a 20-year-old guest became involved in a brawl after the guest allegedly damaged the backyard swimming pool when he jumped into it. The brawl was separated and the party goers continued to socialise. At about 12.15am on Sunday morning, the remaining guests heard a car revving outside the property and the glass front door was damaged. Two of the men went to the front door where they discovered a tin of tomatoes. The 20-yearold man allegedly rode around the driveway with a knife, threatening the resident. He then tried to force entry into the property but was unsuccessful and proceeded to leave the property as police approached with sirens activated. Rebels caught out: Strike Force seizes drugs, cash About 9.30pm on Thursday, December 20, police attached to Strike Force Raptor stopped a vehicle on Regent Street, Jamisontown, after it was seen leaving the clubhouse of the Penrith chapter of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang. Officers seized an amount of cash and about 30 grams of a drug believed to be methylamphetamine. The 22-year-old female driver was charged with supplying drugs and deal with property suspected proceeds of crime. She will face Penrith local court on January 21.

Mr Ryan is described as being approximately 190 centimetres tall, of a medium build and blond hair. Daughter, Amy Ryan, is appealing to the public for any information on his whereabouts. “He is a very friendly man, easy to talk to. He buys

cigarettes from the Seven-11 on Henry Street in Penrith sometimes and sometimes visits Penrith’s shops,” she said. “If there was something going on he didn’t say anything to anyone, but he does have depression so we really want to fi nd him.” It does not appear that Mr Ryan took extra clothing with him and is likely to be wearing a white polo shirt with black cargo shorts. “It has been a very tough period over Christmas for us, but we have had a lot of support from friends and the community,” she said. The family would really appreciate it if anyone with information on Mr Ryan’s whereabouts contact Penrith police on 4721 9444.

New smoking laws come into effect this week

n Monday, new smoking laws were introduced that will see public areas like children’s playgrounds, swimming pool complexes and even public transport areas become smoke free. The new laws are part of the State Government’s NSW Tobacco Strategy, which according to Health Minister Jillian Skinner, is one of the most advanced in the country. “Smoking-related illness accounts for around 5,200 deaths and 44,000 hospitalisations per year in NSW and costs about $8 billion annually,” Mrs Skinner said. “Taking steps to limit people’s exposure to second-hand smoke in outdoor public places is a key step in efforts to minimise tobacco smoking in our society. Smoking is the leading cause of premature death and disability in NSW and we hope to prevent those who have quit smoking from relapsing.” Smoking is now not allowed within 10 metres of children’s play equipment, at swimming pool complexes, in recreational areas like sportsgrounds, at bus stops, taxi ranks or train platforms or within four metres of access points to public buildings. Cancer Council Penrith Community Programs Coordinator Rodney Titovs has welcomed the milestone and praised the NSW Government for “clearing the air”. “We know that people across Greater Western Sydney will be delighted today with the introduction of smoke-free outdoor areas. These new measures will protect children, parents and the whole community from toxic second-hand smoke,” he said. The Act builds on Penrith City Council’s Smokefree policy and will bring consistency across NSW.

Police were kept busy with several alcohol related glassings and altercations KATHERINE TWEED

s we were all enjoying our Christmas break, local police were kept busy as they endeavoured to serve the community and keep the peace on Penrith’s streets. There were a number of disturbances in the local area including alcohol-related incidents. At about 12.10am on Tuesday, January 1, police attended a scene on Fantail Crescent in Erskine Park where the glassing assault of a 29-year-old man had occurred. The 29-year-old man was walking passed a house on the street with his brother when they were pelted with bottles and chased by a number of people, who were attending a party in a backyard. The 29-year-old man was allegedly struck on the side of his head with a glass bottle and as a result was taken by ambulance to Nepean Hospital where he received nine stitches for lacerations to his head and neck. Around 60 people were forced to leave the party and a 17-year-old boy was arrested at the scene and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. In a similar incident, police were called by security at a licenced club in Penrith shortly before 11pm on Sunday, December 23, after a 21-year-old man had been cut from his left ear to his chin when he was

allegedly hit in the face by a man holding a schooner glass. A fight broke out immediately after the incident which led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man from Londonderry, who was charged with reckless wounding and aff ray, and two men, also aged 23, who were charged with one count of aff ray each. Police were also called to an unusual altercation at about 1.30pm on Wednesday, January 2, in a South Penrith shopping centre carpark. A 31-year-old woman was injured whilst leaving the carpark on Evan Street when a padlock was thrown through the passenger’s side window of the vehicle. The padlock struck the female passenger in the face damaging her front teeth and causing lacerations to her nose and mouth. The male driver of the car stopped immediately, however a man approached the car and kicked at the passenger’s side door. The couple contacted police and drove straight to Nepean Hospital where the woman was treated for a fractured cheekbone, damaged teeth and had stitches to her face. Not all of the incidents that police attended during the Christmas holidays were altercations, in one incident, a 13-year-old boy accidentally harmed himself after he had thrown bullets into a bonfi re. At about 9.40pm on Friday, December 28, emergency services responded to reports of an injured teenager in Caloola Avenue, Penrith.

Cops on top of holiday crime

Local Area Command Duty Officer, Inspector Harry Goedings. “Th is young man was very lucky. Had the bullet hit him in the head, we could be dealing with a fatality.” Penrith Police continue to investigate these incidents and anyone with information is asked to contact Penrith Police on 4721 9444.

Budget deficit: Federal Govt sees red despite promise CASSANDRA O CONNOR

ustralia was in shock after Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan informed the public that the Federal Government’s “iron-clad” budget surplus for 2012-13 would actually be in deficit. “In just four months, we have already seen the full hit to revenue that we were expecting for the whole year. Obviously, dramatically lower tax revenue now makes it unlikely that there will be a surplus in 2012-13,” Mr Swan announced on December 20. But MP for Lindsay and Assistant Treasurer, David Bradbury, insists that the surplus backfl ip is necessary. “We are managing the budget responsibly and in a balanced way. We are making savings but our priority is

supporting growth and jobs,” he said. “I know from the discussions that I have had with local businesses and local families that cutting too hard and too deep would put them under enormous pressure.” But Liberal candidate for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, believes the budget deficit will place additional pressure on families. “Labor’s budget deficit means more cost of living pressure for families and businesses,” she said. “Th is will erode the electorate’s trust in the Government, particularly after Lindsay MP and Acting Treasurer David Bradbury wrote to Lindsay residents following the 2012 budget, saying the budget was ‘back in surplus, on time, as promised’,” she said. “Th is is further proof Labor can’t live within its means.”

olice believe that a string of armed robberies that occurred over a number of months in the local area are connected and are appealing to the public for assistance. Strike Force Delander, comprising of officers from the Metropolitan Robbery Unit, is conducting inquires into three armed raids, including one in Emu Plains and another in Werrington. At about 6.30am on Friday, May 26, 2012, two men described as Maori or Pacific Islander in appearance entered a registered club on Dunheved Road, Werrington and threatened staff with a knife and baseball bat. The men fled the scene in a red Holden Commodore, later found burnt out, after stealing a sum of cash. In the second local incident, at about 5am on Sunday, October 7, 2012, two Maori or Pacific Islander men entered a newsagency on the Great Western Highway, Emu Plains, with a machete and threatened a pregnant woman before making off with cash and a large quantity of cigarettes. A third incident in Woodbine is also thought to be connected to the cases.

“Police believe a ‘crew’ of young males from the Mt Druitt area are responsible for these offences,” said Detective Sergeant Paul Smith from the Metropolitan Robbery Unit. “Police believe they are connected due to the similar level of violence and weapons used during the robberies and the similar description of the offenders.” A number of young males from this ‘crew’ were arrested in relation to a similar armed robbery at Riverstone in October last year. Police are concerned by the level of violence and as a result are seeking assistance from members of the public to help identify other members of this ‘crew’ who have yet to be arrested or charged in relation to any of these matters. “It is concerning that people are resorting to such violent measures and this is why police are appealing for any assistance whatsoever from the public to ensure that these persons are arrested and taken off the streets before any further offences are committed,” Detective Sergeant Smith said. Drink driver caused M4 accident: A 29-year-old St Clair man was found guilty of drink driving causing an accident. At 8pm on Friday, August 31 the man was driving a blue Holden Rodeo along the M4 in a westerly direction changing lanes a number of times to avoid other vehicles. He then collided with a white utility he was attempting to avoid. He then lost control of his vehicle colliding with a barrier on the median strip before crossing the freeway and colliding with the kerb. A short time later police attended the scene where the driver could not be located. While at the scene the female owner of the vehicle attended and identified the driver to police. Not long after the vehicle owner and driver attended St Marys Police Station where the driver recorded a breath test reading of 0.176. The man was found guilty and received a 22-month suspended sentence, was placed on a good behaviour bond and was disqualified from driving for five years.

Community service for brawler: A 19-year-old St Clair man appeared in Penrith Local Court this week charged with use/threaten violence causing fear for personal safety and the resisting of an officer in execution of duty. At 8.19pm on Sunday, September 23 the man and two friends were at a bar in St Clair when the trio approached another man, whom the 19-year-old had encountered some trouble with before. The teen, who had a schooner of beer in his hand, threw the liquid at the victim before throwing the glass, only just missing him. A brawl then started in the beer garden and then moved into the car park before the fight was broken up by security. Police arrived at the scene as the man left walking east along Banks Drive. Police approached the man before he took off. Police then pursued the man on foot until he was taken ahold of. The man then swung his right elbow towards the police officers, at which time was taken to the ground. The man then began to punch and kick to avoid being handcuffed. While being placed in handcuffs he spat at police. Summer heat is on Penrith reaches 42 degrees in heatwave KATHERINE TWEED

enrith was left scorching this week as a heat wave hit NSW. On the worst day, Tuesday, Penrith was the fi rst suburb in Sydney to reach temperatures above 40 degrees, forcing local residents to resort to desperate measures to try and keep cool. “The last time there was a day [as warm as Tuesday] in Penrith was on January 23, 2010 where temperatures reached 42.9 degrees. At this stage in Penrith we have had five consequtive days reaching temperatures above 34 degrees which is the largest warm spell since 2011,” said a spokesperson from the Bureau of Meteorology. There are plenty of safety wanrings to be heeded with the hot weather expected to continue in coming weeks and paramedics have been kept busy with numerous calls for assistance. “While everyone should be aware of the hot weather, there is one golden rule which should never be broken: never ever leave babies, children, the elderly or animals alone in a car even if the airconditioner is on,” said Deputy State Emergency Operations Controller, Acting Deputy Commissioner Mick Fuller. “It doesn’t take long for the temperature inside the car to soar, and for the effects of the heat to take hold,” he said. Like many local residents, South Penrith mum, Vanessa Stasinowsky, spent days before the predicted heat wave preparing her home and family for the high temperatures. “When you have an 18-month-old, you have to make sure that you are doing what you can to keep them cool, making sure that they are drinking enough water but still keeping them occupied,” she said.

Normally I spend time in my shed but it isn’t air conditioned so I will just have to stay indoors... which means I will argue with my wife!” Fe Marquez, 42: “Last Saturday it was so hot. Living in a unit is very difficult during summer, especially during the day. I have just come back from the Philippines where it is also very humid. We will just have the air conditioner on all

We are trying to keep the house cool but using the air conditioning is very expensive so we are trying to fi nd other ways,” Mrs Stasinowsky said.

Ms Li returned to St Paul’s last week with her classmates, where she received the news that she came out with a rare perfect IB score of 45 out of a maximum possible 45 marks, equating to the top possible Australian Tertiary Admissions

What is PBA?

Why do it?

am grateful to the Western Weekender for this opportunity to communicate with our residents and businesses on what the Penrith Business Alliance (PBA) stands for and how its activities will impact on their lives and business performance in the medium to long term. The PBA is an independent entity with a board of directors that represent a cross section of industry sectors important to Penrith, as well a number of directors representing Council. It was created by Penrith City Council with a charter to help create 40,000 new jobs over the next three decades. The Council has been widely credited for such a visionary step with the NSW Premier publicly acknowledging that it is a best practice model. PBA is responsible for the economic development of Penrith as a Regional City. Economic development is about policy intervention to generate structural change in the local economy. It is not about more of the same but about diversifying the local economic base, so that it offers a wider variety of high quality jobs and greater jobs choice for our people, particularly for our young, aspiring graduates. Presently over 63 per cent of our workforce travel outside Penrith to work and that is unsatisfactory by any standard. And herein lies the challenge for the PBA as restructuring is a long term process that requires great deal of resilience and community and government support. I will elaborate further on these challenges next week.

And being a business owner is probably a lot tougher than you thought it would be. So have you asked yourself why you do it? Reasons will vary, but here are some common ones: 1. You feel more comfortable as an entrepreneur and being ‘your own boss’ than as an employee. 2. You like the idea that your success or failure is driven by your own efforts (as well as with the collaboration of other people). 3. You like knowing that your hard work and extraordinary efforts benefit you directly. 4. You have an opportunity to contribute to society in a range of ways that can have a positive impact on many people. 5. You know that running a business, while it may be exhausting, frustrating and heartbreaking at times, is rarely boring. So if you entered the world of business ownership thinking it was going to be easy, I hope you haven’t been too disappointed to discover that it was an unrealistic expectation! Even on my most difficult days, I think about the alternative (that is, working for someone else) and I am quickly reminded about all the benefits and challenges I would lose. If the reasons above ring true for you, then keep forging ahead. If you haven’t yet started in business and don’t feel that they resonate, perhaps you need to do some more soul searching. ’m one of those people that refuse to rate anything a perfect 10. No matter how brilliantly conceived something may be, I have always believed that it can be improved. On the barometer, a 9.5 is as good as it gets. There is an inherent danger in letting someone know they have perfected something. When they believe they have ‘nailed it’, most people tend to sit back and rest on their laurels while countless others will be labouring furiously to better their work. It’s competition at its best, always expect the unexpected. I actually enjoy being on the end of bad customer service some days. It encourages me to reflect on my own service, or my business’. The trick is to always look at your business or brand from the outside in. Instead of looking just at the latest quarterly fi nancials, attempt to see yourself as your customers see you. Start by calling your own customer service line. Just fi nding the number can be interesting, see how long you’re on hold for and redesign the system if need be. Go through every piece of contact a client has with your business and experience it yourself. If it’s good enough for you, your worst critic, then you will fi nd that it is good enough for your market. Taking calculated risks is good for business. Come to terms with the fact that the perfect 10 simply doesn’t exist, and when you hit the nine mark, don’t stand back and admire your handiwork. Start work on the next process or procedure to make it better.

The retirement planning study, Planning to be Productive: The Detailed Retirement Planning Strategies of Australian Pre-Retirees, examined the fi nancial, health and leisure plans of 3,230 people over 50 who are approaching retirement. The report found that more than half of Australia’s senior citizens intend to spend their post-employment years engaged in volunteer work. “Whether it’s volunteering, caring responsibilities or engaging with community

organisations, it’s good to see older Australians remaining productive in retirement,’’ said National Seniors chief executive, Michael O’Neill . “We often hear of older people facing social isolation once they have left the workforce. f your New Year’s resolution is to become more computer savvy in 2013, then the Penrith Valley Seniors Computing Club may have the solution for you. “We want to encourage seniors to learn about technology and bring them into the 21st century,” said club secretary, Lorraine Brown. The computing club has been active for almost 10 years and always welcomes new members, even those with no knowledge of how to use computers. “The courses start from a beginners level. We teach new members the basics from turning on the computer to using Word and even how to make cards and letterheads,” Ms Brown said. New members also learn essential information that will allow them to surf the web with ease, including the easiest way to use a mouse, the correct way to sit in a computer chair and how to set up an email address. More experienced members even have the opportunity to attend movie making classes. In its 10th year of operation, the club is better equipped than ever, with 10 computers connected to high-speed broadband internet as well as two colour printers. While the aim of the club is to equip seniors with new skills and allow them to learn about modern technology, there are many other reasons to consider becoming a member. “There is defi nitely a social benefit because all of the men and women come together, have a good laugh and are able to learn in a friendly and relaxed environment,” Ms Brown said. By becoming familiar with your skin, and knowing what is normal, you will increase your chances of spotting any changes since the last time you looked. Red Cross is helping older people remain connected with their community with a free daily phone call, to check on their safety and wellbeing. The service enables older people to have the confidence to live in their own home knowing help is not far away in an emergency. It also provides a sense of security for family and friends who may not be able to visit their loved ones regularly. Th is community program is run through a network of volunteers who make a daily morning phone call to socially isolated, medically dependent and older people living alone. However, there is a new place in Penrith extending a hand to breastfeeding mums; the team at Mamaway are here to help. Mamaway is a maternity and breastfeeding garment company with a difference - the company actively supports breastfeeding. “Our company has supported breastfeeding for more than 10 years,” said Mamaway marketing manager, Evelyn Huang. “I feel lots of mums out there, particularly young mums, need support and help. They really need help and somewhere that they can come for information and support without

feeling like they may be judged.” Aside from supporting breastfeeding in the local community by providing “cute and funky” clothing for mums, Mamaway offer free services and run free breastfeeding workshops. “I have to say that I was very surprised to know there are lots of young mums and single mums around the Penrith area comparing with other regions,” Ms Huang said. “I feel that those young mums do not know how to or do not want to get help when they start breastfeeding their babies,” she said. To support their customers, Mamaway employs women who are nursing mothers, who know what it is like to breastfeed, so that they can support local mums. “At Mamaway, we are a group of nursing

mums in store to support more local mums. If we can get more local mums to know us they can come to get support they need during pregnancy and beyond,” she said. These employees are supported by the company just as much as they support their customers. “90 per cent of our staff are nursing mothers, including myself. Junk products don’t work

very new year we make resolutions to ‘be healthy’ by promising ourselves to exercise regularly, eat well, and give up smoking and other bad habits. Following such basic rules can cut heart disease risk by 80 percent, diabetes risk by 90 percent and cancer risk by 50 percent, according to the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study. But most of us fail to keep these resolutions. Here is some current research to support each goal to give you a reason to achieve them! 1. Wear a pedometer: New research suggests that routinely wearing a pedometer encourages people to walk about an extra mile each day, lose weight, and lower their blood pressure. Aim for at least 30 minutes of brisk walking and a total of 10,000 steps per day. 2. Don’t forget strength training, involving both the upper and lower body: Too many people neglect resistance exercise, particularly women for whom it’s crucial for preventing muscle and bone loss with age. Lift weights for at least 20 minutes, two to three times per week. 3. Eat at least two fish meals per week: The evidence is strong that the oils in darker types of fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring, are beneficial for the heart and brain and may even lower risk of cancer. 4. Drink water: No matter where you are, water should always be the fi rst thing you

reach for when you’re thirsty. Water truly is essential. 5. Sleep eight hours a night: A number of recent studies have confi rmed that you really do need at least eight hours a night. Among the many benefits, adequate sleep makes you feel better, decreases risk for cardiovascular disease and boosts memory. 6. Keep sugar and caffeine, the “legal evils”, to a minimum: It’s hard to believe, but decreasing sugar actually increases people’s energy by minimising the highs and lows that sweet foods trigger. Different people react differently to caffeine, but most of us are probably overstimulated already adding a stimulant just adds to things like road rage. 7. Consider acupuncture and massage as valid therapies for chronic problems, such as back pain and neuropathy: Seeing a good massage therapist for neck strain may work better than taking extra strength panadeine or nurofen regularly. 8. Don’t focus on dieting: Focus on eating. If you’re hungry, you’re more likely to over eat, especially in the evening. Instead of sacrificing all day and gorging later, it’s better to eat enough during the day to avoid uncontrolled eating at night. 9. Don’t drink too many calories: It’s easy to drink calories without noticing but that soft drink or latte might have nearly as many calories as a burger. If you have one as an occasional treat, consider it a meal!

o how is your New Year’s resolution coming along? Hopefully it’s still going. If not then it probably wasn’t important enough to you anyway. Remember from last column I said the reason why you are going to do something is much more important than how you do it. Once you have the ‘why your goal means so much to you’ it’s much easier to fi nd out how and also stay motivated. Don’t try the same old routines that have failed you before. Spend the time to do your research and learn the best way to get what you want. Lack of results is very de-motivating. And don’t fall for the latest gimmick product, pill or shake that is being advertised. I saw a “diet” product sweetened with fructose. Google ‘MRI fructose and eating’ and you will see Yale University did a study showing the way fructose is metabolised in the body can trick the brain that it’s not full yet and make you want to keep eating! And fructose raises triglycerides (the single most predictive lipid marker of heart disease and a marker for insulin resistance) at a greater rate than glucose, which is reason to avoid it. But they’re selling it in weightloss products. By the way common sugar is half fructose. I think one of the biggest obstacles to achieving your goals these days is not a

lack of resources or products it’s a lack of education as to what actually works. It’s good to see one of the big trends in fitness I saw predicted this year is body weight exercise. People are over every new wonder product that comes along promising quick dramatic results. We are realising that they only work for a couple weeks, if at all! Because they are the problem, not us! Junk products will kill a New Year’s resolution as sure as lack of willpower. Keep it simple, educate yourself, stick with the tried and tested equipment! When it comes to your goals, whether you think you can achieve them or think you can’t, you’re right.

New Year resolutions

ith the hot sun beating down, the pool looking so inviting and the beach calling, the last thing that you want to do in summer is pack on the makeup. Now don’t get me wrong, I love makeup and for me, there is nothing better than experimenting with different products and looks ahead of a night out. But, when you are out in the heat, foundation leaves you feeling as though your pores are screaming for air, your mascara starts to run and your lipstick begins to dry out. In addition to the poor comfort levels, most of us forget to put on sunscreen underneath our makeup so, as a result, we end up red and blotchy. Over the Christmas and New Years break I took a holiday up the coast and spent a week by the beach, soaking up the sun. It was on this holiday that I found myself constantly re-applying and fi xing my makeup until I became so frustrated that I stopped wearing it altogether. So, what can we use as an alternative? I began to look for products that would provide me with the coverage that I wanted, without leaving me feeling sticky and uncomfortable. I wanted something that smoothed my complexion, was inexpensive, felt light on my skin and provided SPF protection. With these guidelines in mind I found, and tested, some ‘summer proof’ products that I could use as an alternative to foundation. Of all the products that I looked at and tried out, I couldn’t go past tinted moisturiser for its coverage and cost however there was one product that was just one step above the rest. BB Creams, referred to as Blemish or Beauty Balms, provide moisturisation, a light, breathable coverage and SPF protection. There are many similarities between BB Creams and tinted moisturisers however it is said that BB Creams contain healing properties and from my experience, they are much lighter on the skin. I found that the Nude Magique BB Cream by L’Oreal Paris worked best for me but there are so many products out there to try, ranging from around $10 to over $100.

e all know already that once this is all over we will feel very uncomfortable about all the additions we have made to the waistline over the weeks of celebration and festivities. Some of us too much food, some of us too much drinking and most of us not enough exercise as the year takes its toll and we are embraced by the lounge offers. The food coma combined with the cricket, music and the sound of kids playing with their new toys, sends us off into dreamland, where exercise is the last thing on our minds. New year brings the resolutions, tight shorts and swollen feet. The urge to get out off the lounge and hit the road or the gym is overwhelming and pushes us into a new exercise regime to cut back the festive bulge we have acquired. Th is is where we need to rope ourselves in and take stock of our options. I see so many people in January and February with conditions such as plantar fasciitis and shin splints, which are two over-use injuries usually brought on by a rapid increase in high impact activity. Going from laying around, getting a little heavier, straight to running even a few kilometres can shock the muscles into injury. The key is to slowly increase activity. If you can introduce low impact, high output exercise such as cycling or swimming that is a great start. If you are intent on hitting

the road then start with walking and build up slowly over a couple of weeks to jogging or even run/walking where you run a few hundred metres and then walk in intervals. If you do pull up with an injury though, book ahead with your podiatrist as we get very busy in the new year.

his week an article in a major Sydney newspaper highlighted the need for iodine in a student’s diet. It was suggested that iodine deficiency in Australian school children may be a cause for lower test results when compared to standards in other countries. A New Zealand study in 2009 found that supplementing school-aged children with iodine improved test results and brain function. However, surveys suggest that almost half of all Australian children may be iodine deficient, therefore hindering their learning abilities. Iodine is a micronutrient that is important for healthy brain development. Without enough iodine, a child’s learning and concentration may be affected. Pregnant and breastfeeding women also need to ensure they are getting enough iodine so that the brain development of a foetus or newborn is supported. In Australia soil is naturally low in iodine, meaning that there is less iodine in the foods we eat such as vegetables and animal products. As a nation we also tend to use sea salt in cooking, rather than iodised salt, which also contributes to our diets being low in iodine. Since 2009, all bread made in Australia must use iodised salt,

however to get enough iodine from bread alone means we would have to eat five times more than the average intake! Other good sources of iodine include seafood, dairy products and using iodised salt in cooking. Another way to ensure your child is getting enough iodine is to give them an iodine supplement. Many multivitamins for children will have iodine as an ingredient as will most multivitamins and supplements for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If in doubt speak with your pharmacist. Interestingly a study of school children showed that even those who regularly ate food cooked with iodised salt benefited from an iodine supplement. Th is suggests that children with only a mild iodine deficiency could improve their brain function and learning capabilities through an iodine supplement. Each sport will utilise existing purposebuilt world-class sporting venues including the Sydney International Regatta Centre and Penrith Whitewater Stadium for the water-based activities, with golf to be played at Luddenham’s Twin Creeks Golf Club. Spectators who wish to catch the canoe/ kayak sprint can visit the Sydney International Regatta Centre from Wednesday, January 16 to Friday, January 18. If the thrill of the canoe/kayak slalom is more your thing then catch all the action at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium on January 18 and January 19. Rowing fans can see some of the world’s best up and comers at the Regatta Centre on January 19 and January 20. The male and female triathletes will burn up the course at the Regatta Centre from 8am on Friday, January 18. Golf fans can watch their future stars compete on the beautiful greens of the Twin Creeks Golf Club at Luddenham from Thursday, January 17 to Sunday January 20. 8-year-old Penrith cricketer Brent Williams is well on track to reaching his run target of 800 runs this season. Now at the halfway mark of the local Sydney cricket season, the runs are crucial as he’s scoring not just for his club but for charity too. In October of last year Williams laid down the challenge to Penrith businesses to match his run score for the season with donations, $1 for each run scored and all

the proceeds would be donated to the McGrath Foundation supporting breast cancer. Williams currently sits at 439 runs with 10 rounds remaining in the season. “I would have liked to have been at 500 runs at this point in the season but we’ve got a two-day game against Sydney Uni this weekend so hopefully I can get it to 500 then and start it fresh next week,” Williams said. The young batsman said he was thrilled with the amount of local support he was receiving from businesses and the general public.

“My goal amount I wanted to raise was $5,000 and I’ve already passed that,” Williams said. “I have about 12 sponsors at the moment but I’ve also had a lot of people give me $500 here and there which has been great.” Williams added that his personal mission to score runs for charity plays on his mind when he’s at the crease. “When you play a bad shot you think, ‘right I’m not out here just for me or the team, I’m out here to score runs to raise a few dollars for the McGrath Foundation as well’,” he said.

Signings cement red-hot form Wanderers lock in services of several key players for next season NATHAN TAYLOR

he Western Sydney Wanderers are already enjoying a breakout season and it seems their future is set to continue along that path with the re-signing of a number of key players for next season. The Wanderers have secured the services of local product and captain Michael Beauchamp, goalkeeper Ante Covic, midfielder Mateo Poljak, defender Adam D’Apuzzo, midfielder Shannon Cole and fullback Jerome Polenz. 31-year-old Beauchamp, who played his junior football in Sydney’s west, said it is great to be staying at the Wanderers. “What is happening here at the Wanderers is something special and it is terrific to be a part of it for next season,” he said. “It is a credit to the club, coaching staff and the boys to get the results we have achieved and to get out and represent the west of Sydney like we have.” 26-year-old D’Apuzzo said he is “over the moon” to continue his involvement with the fourth-placed side and believed he was part of something big. “There is fantastic morale among the team and to be part of a group of players that are such good personalities and humble at the same time is amazing,” he said. “Everything is heading in the right direction and I am learning a lot from a very experienced coaching staff. To see the support we are getting from what feels like

the entire west of Sydney has been an amazing experience so far and I just want to be a part of it.” 28-year-old Cole said he is excited with the direction the club is heading in and praised Wanderers fans for their efforts on cheering on the ‘red and black’ every home game. “I think you would struggle to fi nd

With seven wins, two draws and six losses, the Wanderers are sure the talk of the A-League for all the right reasons. Wanderers boss Lyall Gorman told the Weekender he wasn’t at all surprised about the club’s red-hot debut season.

“We always had tremendous self-belief in the squad and we always promised our fans and our members we’d make them proud and hopefully we’re doing that,” he said. “We’re about improvement each week and growing our squad, growing as a unity and we’ll see where that takes us at the end of the season.”

Last Thursday’s Harness Racing was conducted on a glorious summer’s evening resulting in a particularly large crowd of interested onlookers appreciating some fi ne racing. Dominic Irofi no from Snowhite Icecreams were the sponsors of the meeting and the principals of Snowhite Icecream and their families were on board enjoying the amenities and thrills of the sport. Race one set the scene for a number of favourites and second favourites winning throughout the program. The winner was Hez got the Nod at $1.60 with driver Josh Osbourne bringing him from almost last at the bell to win going away. Blissful Guy ($2.20), driven by Kerry Ann Turner, also scored an easy win in the second race after coming from well back and being three wide on the home turn. Race three was spoiled when Spirited

Lorraine Pozza Jasper locked wheels with another runner causing Blake Fitzpatrick to be tipped from the sulky, resulting in several runners being checked. The race then went to outsider Kilfi Fire ($19.50) driven by Trevor Munday. Race four saw ZenitraShannon ($9.80) with driver Mick Munro lead from barrier six and maintain the advantage throughout. The Snowhite Icecream feature race went to Tinkers Taxi at $2.30 with local driver Paul Sapio making it three in a row and more to come, judging on his strong fi nishing run to the judge. Fancied runners Touch of Royalty ($2.70) driven by Rick Alchin and Gifted Bliss ($1.20) with driver Blake Fitzpatrick took out races six and seven. Gifted Bliss in particular showed up as a future stakes winner and it was also her third victory in a row. One for the black book.

enrith fans might already have cheered on Michael Jennings for the last time, with intense speculation this week that the NSW Origin Centre could be joining the Sydney Roosters before the start of the 2013 season. A tweet from Panthers General Manager, Phil Gould, expressing his discontent at some of the Panthers playing group sparked the controversy. “Very hard for any struggling team to rise out of the cellar when key players perform poorly and won’t accept responsibility for results,” he tweeted on January 4 at 9pm. Numerous reports have since followed that the Roosters have expressed interest in Jennings, especially as B J Leilua was recently released from contract and an ACL tear in pre-season training has ruled out Tautau Moga for at least six months – meaning the Sydney team is in need of a specialist left-side centre. Tension between Jennings and the Panthers management has long been documented.

Is Jennings heading to the east? Speculation is that he might be there before the season starts.

Back in May of 2012, Coach Ivan Cleary dropped a bombshell by relegating Jennings to the NSW Cup side. Th ree days after the shock news and in the midst of the crisis,
