For this week’s ‘Business in Focus’ we are interviewing Monique, who is the owner of Brain Wise Learning. Monique had a son that struggled through primary school. After reading a book called The Brain That Changes Itself by Dr Norman Doidge, she learned how brain research is finding ways of improving cognitive skills like memory and attention.

Since then, she worked with a speech pathologist and supported parents who were on the same journey. What Monique learned, was that science views the brain very differently than it did just a short time ago and she now offers an evidence-based, online computer program that improves the actual ability to learn.

How long have you been receiving business advice from the WSBC?

We started before COVID, and continue now.

What was the main struggle you identified within your business?

Social media and digital marketing. All my previous marketing experience had been in the 1990s, and things changed a lot while I took a few years out of my career to raise my son.

What were things you implemented that had a big impact on your business moving forward?

Changing my language for better engagement. I really had to shift from trying to sell to getting to know my market. Oh, and including Instagram in my mix and learning how to engage an audience on LinkedIn.

What advice would you give to other small businesses in the same situation as yours?

I do like finding my own solutions, but learning from someone else’s professional experience can help you avoid pitfalls that you can miss.

What are your business goals for the future?

When your child struggles at school year after year, it takes a toll on them, you and your family. So I’m on a mission to use the latest brain research to improve the memory, attention, language processing skills and mindset of every struggling learner out there – children and adults.
