SG-Lecture | How the Holocaust still has Impact Today

Rudie Cortissos tells his life story and discusses the persecution of the Jews during World War II. Rudie (name used in hiding) Cortissos was born in January 1939. He is a direct descendant of a Portuguese-Jewish family that settled in Amsterdam at the end of the 16th century, like many Portuguese Jews at the time. As a little boy, he had to go into hiding at the end of 1941, as a consequence of the increasing persecution of the Jews by the occupying forces. For 3½ years, he stayed at four different addresses in Amsterdam, without his parents, using various false first names and surnames. In the end, Rudie and his father survived the war. He never knew his mother, who was deported in 1943 to Sobibor, where she was murdered on the day she arrived. 63 members of his family were gassed in Auschwitz and Sobibor.

Hrair Sarkissian brings invisible stories and contested histories to the surface. How does he do it? And why is this so important to him and many others? Find out more about his work and upcoming projects in this Artist Talk with Todd Reisz, architect and co-author of the monography written about Sarkissian’s work.

Hrair Sarkissian and Todd Reisz went on a research trip to Turkey last month to uncover the background of Sakissian’s grandmother, who originally came from the Mush region in Eastern Turkey. They will be discussing their experiences and what they discovered during this trip. Hrair Sarkissian will also document this research into his ancestry in a new film he is producing. This Artist Talk is part of the exhibition The Other Side of Silence, on view until May 14 in Bonnefanten.

Anyone who believes the history of rock music began with Elvis will be proven wrong in this music documentary about the genre’s actual creator: Little Richard. In the documentary Little Richard: I Am Everything, director Lisa Cortès rewrites music history and reveals Little Richard’s complex inner world. The film corrects the whitewashed music canon and supplements it with a wealth of Little Richard’s predecessors and contemporaries, such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe: the woman who gave then-fourteen-year-old Penniman his breakthrough. Cortès paints a loving portrait of an underappreciated revolutionary.

In Rusland geboren Maya Fridman speelt muziekstuk Canti d’Inizio e Fine van Oekraïense componist Maxim Shalygin. De Engelen hits, in het alom bejubelde ‘The Kik hertaalt Eurovisie’. Door Dave von Raven eigenhandig hertaald. Origineel en briljant uitgevoerd zoals alleen The Kik dat kan.

Des Doods vormen de namen van de zes delen in het werk Canti d’Inizio e Fine, geconcludeerd door de epiloog van de Todesfuge, waar Maya tegelijkertijd zingt en haar cello bespeelt. Elk deel symboliseert één van de doodsengelen uit de Joodse mythologie. De muziek wordt afgewisseld met gedichten en verhalen over oorlog en bevrijding. Deze worden voorgedragen door Manouk Pluis.

Een mooiere en beter getimede seizoens-opening is bijna niet te wensen. Op zondag 14 mei, de dag na de finale van het Eurovisiesongfestival, opent The Kik ons theaterseizoen. De muzikaal uitmuntende band rond de immer geestige frontman Dave Von Raven neemt je mee langs ouder- en nieuwerwetse Eurovisie Songfestival

Ze putten daarbij uit hun eigen expertises en hun Koerdische en Albanese roots.Gjoka en Yasit lieten zich voor deze productie inspireren op A Quiet Evening of Dance van de grootdansmeester William Forsythe. Forsythe wordt gezien als de grondlegger van de hedendaagse dans, die deze kunstvorm bevrijdde uit haar klassieke keurslijf. Volgens The New York Times is hij een pionier die de wildernis in trekt. Neighbours bevindt zich op het kruispunt van urban, klassieke en hedendaagse dans en laat zien dat dans deel uitmaakt van het mens zijn.
