Wangel is sure that his foolhardy son, Bernard, who runs the imaginary Der Cosmos newspaper, has gone too far this time, involving outsiders in a way that can put their whole secret at risk.

Yesterday, she’d dropped into bed early, and had left Aryeh to send an urgent message to Binyamin not to come under any circumstances. Not the same day she’d disappeared from the classroom for such a long time. There was no way to know what kind of thoughts and suspicions were going through Wangel’s mind after the story of his broken telephone. But in the empty bottle, she’d send a message to Binyamin. Very minimal, very vague, but he’d understand more or less what had agitated her so much. And he would also have to understand the other things she’d write to him: that she refused to meet, discuss, or talk about the subject, until the story of the phone that fell into the pool would be completely forgotten.

“Okay,” Elky said, and sat down on a stool. She passed a hand over her forehead, and to Naomi, she suddenly looked very old. Maybe she had also discovered something distressing recently? No, it made no sense; she was just imagining it.

She studied Elky again, carefully, and then left the store with her two opaque, blue plastic bottles. The factory rose in front of her between the trees, a rectangular, ugly, cement bunker, most of which was underground. But the spring breeze that rustled quietly between the leaves made Naomi turn her head in the other direction and let the wind tickle her face. New flowers that had suddenly blossomed over the past month dotted the grass with a pink, purple, and orange carpet, and Naomi looked at all this beauty, took a deep breath, and continued walking. Maybe their spring would also come now, if indeed she had understood correctly, and the Nazis no longer reigned over the whole world. She wondered what the outside world even looked like. How would it look after they would…leave from here?

It was scary to think about it.

Aryeh did not understand her, when she told him her thoughts. “Why scary?” They were speaking in such low tones that they could barely hear one another.

“Because…” Naomi emptied the cleaning fluid that she’d bought into an old, rusty metal jug, and then scrubbed the inside of

“What are you going to write to Binyamin? He’s very tense; I saw him at work today. Think about him.”

“What did you tell him?”

“He tried to come over to me, and I just repeated what you asked me to tell him: that you came away from the phone call yesterday very confused, agitated, and frightened; that you don’t want to meet him just yet; and that you’ll find a way to convey to him the main points of what happened.”

“Did you speak to Elkovitz?”

“He kept a safe distance from me.”

“His wife must have warned him,” Noami murmured ominously. She bent over the piece of paper with a pen in her hand, but didn’t write a word. “How did Binyamin accept that?”

Recap: Chayala begins getting eye exams and her levels of ROP disease keep rising. The doctors insist she needs to be weaned off oxygen to be sent home..

Today is the day! Today Chayala will be taken off oxygen, as an experiment, to see if she can handle it. Part of me bubbles with excitement: this is a very important step in Chayala’s development, besides for being the determining factor in her homecoming. Another part of me, though, is churning with fear: what if something goes terribly wrong? The doctors still don’t know the reason why she has not made progress in this area. There could very well be some issue they don’t know about. I am petrified. A few hours later, I am visibly calmer and more relaxed. Chayala is off the oxygen and breathing by herself! What an accomplishment!

What I don’t realize, and worse, the doctors are also unaware of, is that Chayala is working too hard to be able to breathe on her own. She really isn’t ready for this yet. The week-and-a-half of breathing without the help of oxygen causes her hypertension, or high blood pressure. Her heart is exerting itself too much during the time it is working on its own, without the oxygen, and it has a negative effect on her.

Meanwhile, the doctors continue to prepare for Chayala’s discharge. Before she leaves, she needs a procedure done to insert a catheter through many of her veins, her heart, and her lungs. I don’t think much of it, as it is a standard procedure, nothing too complicated. I arrive that morning in a chipper mood. One step closer to Chayala coming home! I give an internal cheer and grin to myself. We sit outside the room where the doctors are working

shock of it suddenly overwhelms me, and I quickly pull over a chair and sit down.

on Chayala for the duration of the procedure. The half hour estimated time for the procedure soon passes, stretching into forty-five minutes, and then an hour. As the clock ticks, my heart pounds more and more rapidly. Why is it taking so much longer than expected? Did something go wrong? What is happening?

Suddenly I notice a flurry of doctors converging on the room. It seems like there are thirty doctors in there! I try going in myself but am not allowed in. At this point, it is clear that something is terribly wrong. I turn back to my Tehillim. I had been saying Tehillim before, but now my tefillos take on an intense urgency, as I beg Hashem to save my daughter without even knowing exactly what is wrong. Finally, finally, after what seems like an eternity, the main doctor performing the procedure comes out to us.

“She is in critical condition,” he informs us, a grave look on his face. “We almost lost her. She is hanging on by a thread. The only thing left to do is pray.”

My heart thuds to a stop for a moment as his words hit me.

Critical condition. My mind refuses to process this update. I am numb, like a block of ice, not feeling anything.

“Can we go in to her?” my husband asks.

The doctor motions us through the doorway, and we squeeze in. I gasp at the sight. Chayala is lying

there, eyes closed, white as the sheet she is on, dozens of wires protruding and connecting her to multiple machines. One of her legs is completely purple.

“W-why is her leg purple?” is the only coherent thought that makes its way out of my mouth. My voice emerges shaky, in an unnaturally high pitch.

“She had a blood clot in her leg,” the doctor says.

I stand there and stare at Chayala. Her appearance is frightening. She looks like she is teetering between this world and the next. The shock of it suddenly overwhelms me, and I quickly pull over a chair and sit down.

In the beginning, when Chayala was born, I had been scared that she wouldn’t make it, but as she slowly progressed and proved the doctors wrong, I was filled with hope. Now, seeing her in this state, it is hard to imagine a positive outcome. My precious Chayala…I can’t bear to think about losing her, but the reality is staring me right in the face, every time I glance over at her again.

My vision blurs as tears start spilling out. This drastic change is so sudden, shocking, and unexpected, it is too much for me. I came this morning with hopes of bringing Chayala home in the near future, and now it seems that we will never bring her home. She is still alive, but barely. • TO BE CONTINUED

The thing about laundry is that its sort, wash, fold, and repeat. That’s kind of simple, right? Wrong. Forgive me if you find this triggering.

Yet, can I dare to say that maybe, just maybe, if your laundry room/closet is organized, and you have a system in place, it may not be that terrible of an ordeal (Read: enjoyable)?!

THE SHOWSTOPPER LAUNDRY ROOM:

WHATS WORKING AND WHAT ISNT:

Since Chaya Suri is very dissatisfied with her laundry room, we needed to brainstorm how to make it work for her. We went through what is working for her and what isn’t.

What works is that she has an amazing system in place where she has six hampers perfectly fitting in her bottom cabinets. The children place their sorted laundry in the hamper. Now there isn’t laundry laying around taunting anybody. (Yes, I firmly believe that laundry has that power.)

Disclaimer: If you don’t have room for your six kids in your apartment then maybe six hampers might not be the brightest idea.

One of the things driving Chaya Suri nuts is that she doesn’t get a chance to fold her towels. Therefore, the towels end up in a pile on her laundry room counter and its quite an eyesore.

Upon hearing this I came up with a very unconventional idea. Fellow organizers, balabustas, and friends please don’t judge me for this. I told her “If this just isn’t working for you, why don’t we get you a beautiful large basket to place in your linen closet and you will simply put the towels away unfolded.” Gasp!

I know this isn’t typical but sometimes we just need to do what works. And can I just add- your closets aren’t being audited (I hope). So, if you come up with a solution that’s unusual but works for your family - GO FOR IT!!

LAUNDRY ROOM SET-UP:

Before anything, take a minute to admire the beautiful black and wooden theme. This was one of my favorite project outcomes!! I’m sure Chaya Suri will find doing laundry a bit more pleasant than it was till now.

1. On the first shelf, on turntables, for easy access we placed her stain removers. We also put a bin with her cleaning products so that her cleaning help can remove it entirely and take it along with her. Last, we placed her cleaning sprays on another turntable.

-Thank you, Chaya Suri, for introducing me to some new stain removers!! The day I was excited to try out new detergents was the day I realized that I was finally an adult

2. The overstock of the cleaning supplies was placed on the second shelf along with some hand soap refills and extra cleaning supplies that she doesn’t need daily access to.

3. The third shelf has some extra gloves and bug sprays just in case.

If you are following along with this for your own home, the categories you may find in a laundry room are as follows; detergent, stain removers, bleaches, soaps, and cleaning supplies. Every laundry room has its own personality so categories will vary.

Upon completing this laundry room, I was curious how women with large families tackle their laundry. Here’s some advice that I got:

- “I have a different color hamper for each bedroom. After washing the laundry, they are replaced to their hamper. I then fold the laundry in the room that is designated for the color hamper I just finished washing. All that is left to do, is to put your freshly washed and folded laundry into the drawer.” B.R.

-“Each room in my house has a hamper which the kids put their laundry into. Every day of the week is designated for a different room. The fresh laundry is placed back into the hamper unfolded and the children sleeping in that room fold the laundry that very same day.” R.K.

GARLICINFUSED OIL

This elegant, aromatic infused oil is the perfect pairing with warm, crusty sourdough. Adjust the measurements to your liking.

Yield: 10 bottles, 30ml each

Ingredients:

1¼ cups good quality olive oil

20 fresh garlic cloves, peeled and slightly smashed (2 per bottle)

10 small sprigs fresh rosemary (or 2 teaspoons dried rosemary)

2 teaspoons colored peppercorns

Directions:

1. Divide the olive oil evenly among 10 small 30ml bottles (about 1 oz each).

2. Add 2 garlic cloves, 1 small rosemary sprig (or a pinch of dried rosemary), and a few colored peppercorns into each bottle.

3. Seal the bottles and let them infuse for at least 24 hours before using.

Mini homemade Havdalah candles:

Instructions: Soak white Chanukah candles in a bowl of boiling water for about 2-3 minutes until soft and pliable. Carefully twist two candles to create a mini Havdalah. Let cool for 10 minutes until fully hardened.

EASY DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

Ingredients:

2 sticks margarine or butter, softened and cut into chunks

1 ½ cups brown sugar

½ cup sugar

2 eggs

4-5 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

3 cups flour

1 ½ cups white chocolate chips

1 ½ cups dark chocolate chips

Directions:

1. In the bowl of your standing mixer (fitted with the paddle attachment), cream the margarine, brown sugar, and sugar. Add the eggs, vanilla extract, baking soda, and salt, and continue mixing until smooth. Add the flour and mix until a stiff cookie batter forms. Add in the chocolate chips and mix for another minute until evenly distributed.

2. Use a small scoop to create the cookies. Arrange them about 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet.

3. Slightly flatten each cookie with the palm of your hand. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden.

DAIRY SMORE’S CLUSTERS

Packed with marshmallows, cookies, crisps, and pretzels for the perfect sweet and salty bite, these smore’s are a delicious treat to enjoy on Shabbos morning or while on the run- delivering Mishloach Manos.

Ingredients:

2 bars brown milk chocolate

1 bar dairy white chocolate

¾ cup mini marshmallows

½ cup white sandwich cookies (1 small bag of mini cookies), crushed

1 cup salted pretzel sticks, chopped

½ cup crisp rice cereal

½ cup Cocoa Munchies cereal

½ cup Baker's Choice vanilla crunchies (for topping)

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, combine the mini marshmallows, crushed sandwich cookies, chopped pretzels, crisp rice cereal, and Cocoa Munchies cereal.

2. Using a microwave or double boiler, melt the 3 bars of chocolate until smooth (make sure no water gets in).

3. Pour the melted milk chocolate over the dry ingredients in the bowl and stir with a spatula until everything is fully coated.

4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a small scoop, drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, shaping them into clusters.

5. Immediately sprinkle Baker's Choice vanilla crunchies over the clusters while the chocolate is still melted.

6. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or until set.

7. Once firm, store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge for a firmer texture.

WHITE DREAMY DRINK

Velvety and luscious, this easy chilled white frappe is a welcome change from the traditional hot cup of coffee. Make sure to shake before serving.

Yield: Approx 7-8 cups

Ingredients:

3-4 cups whole (red bottle) milk

½ tub Klein’s vanilla ice cream

½ container whipped cream cheese

Directions:

In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients and blend with an immersion blender until smooth (you can also use a standard blender). Refrigerate until ready to serve.

TIP: You can add a bit of dissolved instant coffee for a mocha twist.

LET’S MAKE KIDDUSH.

Herring and kichel is a delicious, gourmet Mishloach Manos that will be enjoyed on Purim or throughout Shabbos. Using these boxes as a blank canvas, you can easily dress it up to suit your theme. Here, we did retro clowns inspired;)

SPICY CURED ASIAN TUNA OR SALMON

This bold and flavorful cured fish is infused with sweet, salty, and spicy notes for a gourmet twist. Pair it with any cracker of your choice, and it’s a mini meal on the go (not sure this one will last till the Kiddush).

Ingredients:

2 Yellowfin Tuna fillets (or 1 small side of salmon), cut into small chunks

½ cup brown sugar

3-4 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

1 teaspoon truffle salt

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 cup oil

1 teaspoon sesame oil

4 stalks scallions, sliced with scissors

5-10 cloves garlic, thinly sliced

1-2 jalapeños, thinly sliced

1 red chili pepper, thinly sliced or 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for added heat)

Instructions:

1. In a large container, combine all the ingredients.

2. Cover and let sit in the refrigerator for 24 hours to allow the flavors to meld. Serve with crackers of your choice.

QI very much enjoy your articles. I am BH healthy and thin with a few children. I can eat what I want and I won't gain weight. Therefore, I am not careful with the foods I eat. I eat lots of cake, and never focus on health too much. How important is it to be careful with what I eat? I have no motivation since BH I don't see it affecting me.

You bring up a common mindset: "If I’m thin and healthy, why should I care about what I eat?" It’s understandable—when weight isn’t a struggle and no immediate health concerns arise, motivation to eat well can feel unnecessary. But here’s the reality: Health isn’t just about weight, and the effects of diet go far beyond what we see in the mirror.

Here are some factors to keep in mind:

1. Health is more than just a number on the scale- While being at a healthy weight is certainly beneficial, the quality of the foods you eat impacts your body on a cellular level. A diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats increases inflammation, strains organs, and may silently set the stage for long-term health issues— even in people who are naturally thin, as time moves on.

For example:

• Heart health – Research shows that even in people with normal weight, a high intake of refined sugars and unhealthy fats raises the risk of cholesterol imbalances, high blood pressure, and even heart disease. A study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that individuals who consumed more than 20% of their calories from added sugar had a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, regardless of their weight.

• Blood sugar & insulin resistance – Excess sugar and refined carbohydrates can lead to insulin resistance over time, which is a precursor to diabetes. Surprisingly, thin people can also develop Type 2 diabetes if they consistently consume high amounts of processed sugar and lack nutrient-dense foods.

• Nutrient deficiency – Eating lots of cake and processed foods means you might be missing out on essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Even if this doesn’t show up now, deficiencies can lead to fatigue, weakened immunity, poor

bone health, and other problems down the line.

2. Energy, mood, and long-term wellness- A wellbalanced diet isn’t just about preventing future illness—it affects how you feel every single day. A diet rich in whole foods, protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates supports:

2. THE NUGGET

The Torah concludes with listing Moshe’s accomplishments: He received the Torah, facilitated miracles in the desert, and broke the Luchos. The last part seems negative, but upon deeper reflection, it highlights Moshe’s greatest quality. As Moshe descended from Har Sinai with the Luchos, he saw that a group of Bnei Yisroel had sinned with the Eigel HaZahav. Had he given them the Luchos, they would have been found guilty of their sin. In a split-second decision, he shattered them, saving these Jews. Although the Luchosmade by Hashem Himself- were so precious to Moshe, his love for Bnei Yisroel was even greater. He was willing to sacrifice everything for them. He understood that a Jew, regardless of his actions, is greater than the Torah itself!

According to the Midrash, Moshe had many names, including Yered, Chever, Yekusiel, and Shmaya.

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET

As a baby, Moshe was saved from the Nile River by Batya, King Pharaoh’s daughter, and raised in the king’s palace. After an incident where 2 Jews informed on him, he was forced to flee to Midyan. There, he married Tzipporah and had 2 sons. When he was 80 years old, Hashem appeared to him in a burning bush and convinced him to lead the Jewish people out of Mitzrayim, which he faithfully did. He led them through their 40-year desert journey and is known as the greatest Navi of all time.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

Our fellow Jews must be treated with the greatest love, regardless of their level of Torah observance. If someone keeps fewer Mitzvos than you or doesn’t keep any at all, treat them with love just the same.

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

What is one way to show love to someone, even if their Jewish standards differ from yours?

Mix 1 TBSP of sugar with a squirt of purple food coloring in a bag. Mix well.

Cut 20 marshmallows to look like a petal diagonally in half and place them into a bowl.

Mix 1 tbsp. of confectioners' sugar with ½ tsp. of water to make icing.

Repeat step 1 with the other colors.

Dip the sticky side of 20 petals into green sugar, 6 petals into pink sugar, 6 petals into yellow sugar, and 6 petals into purple sugar, then put them back into the bowl.

Make a border around your cupcake with the green marshmallows, using the green icing to stick them onto your cupcake.

Pour each color of sugar into a small cup.

Mix 2 tbsp. of confectionary sugar with ½ tsp. water. Add 2 drops of green food coloring and mix well with toothpick.

Keep layering your cupcake with the marshmallows, adding in all the colors.

Take 2 full marshmallows and put each one on a toothpick. Dip each marshmallow into the icing and then dip it into the blue sugar.
