ice conditions on the Allagash headwater lakes. “This week many Maine residents and visitors will be out snowmobiling and ice fishing to open the 2016 season, said Governor Paul R. LePage. “Anglers should enjoy the ice fishing season that began January 1, but exercise caution regarding ice conditions in light of the unseasonably warm weather Maine experienced over the Christmas holiday. Please take precautions so that your outdoor experiences are safe and memorable. Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW) Superintendent Matthew LaRoche warned that
Chamberlain Lake skimmed over for the first time on Monday night, December 28. Over a foot of snow was received on Tuesday. That snow will help insulate the ice and slow down the formation good solid ice. The smaller bodies of water and coves were frozen over when rangers were out checking ice conditions on Monday. Churchill Lake was 90 percent closed in on Monday, but there was open water all around the edges of the lake. There is also open water in all thoroughfares that connect the lakes. If you have reservations at one of the area sporting camps, you should check with the camp operators before heading up for the weekend. LaRoche is urging people to stay off the ice with snowmobiles. If you do venture out on the ice, do so on foot, and stay in the coves, you should check the ice as you go out. “An inch of ice isn’t very much, and that thickness may vary from location to location, LaRoche said. “The ice is just not safe enough to cross any of the waterway headwater lakes yet. He urged
those heading out to fish this weekend to tell someone where you are going and take someone with you. The AWW superintendent warned all visitors to stay away from thoroughfares avoid tributary streams when traveling on the ice. “We usually have a good crowd out ice fishing on the first weekend of the season, LaRoche said, referring to the ice fishing season that started January 1. “The native brook trout fishing is usually excellent when the season first opens. The AWW provides: winter campgrounds at the Chamberlain Bridge and Kellogg Brook; See ICE page 2...
New Solar Tracker Helping To Power School KENNEBUNK – An innovative Vermontmade solar tracker is now helping to power the Middle School of the Kennebunks in southern Maine. The 6 kW solar system will help offset the electrical bills of Kennebunks public middle school, a school made up of grades 6-8 with over 400 students, faculty, and staff. Science teachers will be able to access real time information online tracking power produced that can be incorporated into existing curriculum. The Maine school first went solar 5 years ago with a small solar array located by the entrance to the gym. The
5.5 kW system was damaged during the winter of 2015. Naoto Inoue, owner of Solar Market, the installer of the new system, and Jeff Rodman, principal of MSK, decided a solar tracking system would better fit the needs of the school. The project utilized an American-made AllEarth Solar Tracker, which tracks the sun throughout the day to maximize energy production. The groundmounted pre-engineered solar trackers are designed for residential and commercial-scale installations and are manufactured nearby in Williston, Vt. by AllEarth Renewables. The construction company asks that the town and the shop owners who have anything on the sidewalk downtown remove them by the 28th Only the five remaining trees will be cut downtown on the ocean side of Route 1. A majority of the bricks in the sidewalk will be removed in front of the shops as the drainage is run up thru. The sidewalk will be graded gravel thru most of the winter and at the transition from the remaining brick to the gravel a cold patch pavement mix will be used as a ramp.
The parking spaces along Route 1 will not be available during installation of drainage. The ornamental lights will be removed next week. The main streetlights on the power poles will remain, for now, to light to road and downtown. The construction company will be providing daily updates for the work being performed downtown. AL Auxiliary Earn Unit First Prize in Float Parade
BERWICK The American Legion Auxiliary, Charles S. Hatch Unit # 79 of Berwick, has once again made some Christmas magic
Our Cord?
at the Berwick Holiday parade. This year’s theme, Songs of the Season, brought out the musical side of everyone involved, but our ladies were especially
WOOD
inspired. Using the song “I’ll be Home for Christmas (If Only in My Dreams), they based their float design around the idea of different troops stationed far

Or Theirs?
from their families during the holiday season. (This Unit specializes in sending care packages to such soldiers through their Project: Gratitude program, sending large packages full of goodies to them once their families from the area can confirm their new locations.) The float itself features four of the Ladies dressed in authentic military clothing representing the Marines, Army, Navy and
Air Force, all gathering around a small tree in a shared ‘barracks’, singing the song and sharing their company surrounded by handmade drawings such as the ones a military member might receive from a young child. The attention to detail, dedication, and faithfulness to the theme of the parade earned the Unit First Prize in the Civics division, and much well-wishing from the crowds gathered around town.

~ News ~ Students Invited to Serve as Honorary Pages in Maine Senate STATEWIDE Sen. Dawn Hill of Cape Neddick would like to remind local schools and students about the Senate Honorary Page program at the State House in Augusta. The daylong program gives students a unique opportunity to not only observe the state's legislative process, but to be a part of it. All students from third grade through high school are encouraged to participate. “It is always enjoyable to host local students for the day at the State House,” said Sen. Hill. “It is a great experience and hopefully inspires them to someday get involved and serve in public office.” Honorary pages help deliver messages, distribute documents within the Senate Chamber, interact with the senators and most importantly, take part
in a real-world, interactive legislative learning experience. The Legislature began its second session on January 6 and is expected to run through April 2016. Honorary pages are needed throughout the session, so scheduling is flexible. For more information or to schedule a visit, contact Sen. Hill’s office at 207-287-1515 or email her at dawn.hill@legislature. maine.gov.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have cats that love to walk across my laptop. One day I noticed when I minimize my Google Chrome it disappears. I know how to maximize it again, but have not figured out how to get it back on the screen where I can see it when it's minimized. When I minimize, I can see it slide and disappear to the bottom of the screen. I've tried using the move option, but can't "snag" it to move it. Can you help? Mary Dear Mary, From your description, I am guessing that your taskbar (the bar across the bottom of your screen) has been set to auto-hide or perhaps is just
hidden. If that is the case, you can fix it by right clicking on the taskbar (if you can get it to appear) and clicking on "Properties." In the properties dialog box, you can remove the checkbox in front of "Auto hide the taskbar," and click "OK" to close the dialog box and save your changes. If you can't see the taskbar, you can try tapping the windows logo key on your keyboard. This should bring up the taskbar. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been reading your e-zine for quite a while now and I love it as I have learned a lot. But, I am up there in age and not too computer savvy. to put pictures in 'The Cloud'. I have a bunch of pictures that I emailed to myself, plus a lot on my phone that I want to put somewhere where I can go to look at them or retrieve them without them being on just my computer. The reason I want to do this is because I had just downloaded all the pics from my phone to my computer one day and the very next day my computer got fried from lightning! I lost all the pics of my grandkids and wasn't too happy about it. Plus, I had to fork over money for another computer! If you could just talk me through it, I would be forever grateful to you. Thank you so much! Jackie Dear Jackie, When you put your pictures or other files in the "Cloud" what you are really doing is storing them on another computer, belonging to a company that offers cloud storage, somewhere across the internet. Your first step in storing your pictures in the cloud is to select the company you want to work with. Online backup services like Carbonite will backup your files automatically to their servers (in the cloud) for a reasonable yearly fee. Microsoft has a cloud storage service called OneDrive that has a small amount of free storage space, which you can then pay to increase if needed. There are many other cloud storage services available like Dropbox, Google Drive, pCloud and others. Some are easy to use, and others require a little bit more knowledge. In your case, I would suggest Carbonite. Once you have downloaded the program, the install wizard will ask you what kind of files you want to backup, then find the files and automatically back them up for you. Elizabeth

Dear computer lady I realize this is away from the pc, but there are times when I am on my iPad that I wished I could copy and paste something. I can highlight it, but that is as far as I can go. What
Dear Kathy, When you highlight text or images on your iPad, a small menu appears with several choices depending on the location and type of items you have highlighted. Copy, is usually one of these choices, (if it is not one of the options, try tapping on, "Select"). Lets give it a try right now. Find some text on your iPad, maybe in the, "Notes" app and hold your finger on one of the words in the text until a small circle appears, then release your finger. That one word will be highlighted with a bar at the beginning and end of the word. You can drag those bars to include more text in your highlight, or tap, "Select All" in the menu to select all the text. Once you have highlighted the desired text, tap the, "Copy" button to copy it. Now, open a new note to past your text into. Tap and hold your finger on a blank spot in the note until the same small circle appears and release your finger. A button with the word, Paste will appear. Tap the, "Paste" button to paste your text into the new note. I hope this helps you as you use your iPad. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Dear Mary, I am not familiar with how Picasa stores things on the internet, but I do know that it works with pictures on your computer, and those pictures would still be located on your old hard drive. I would suggest that you bring the old hard drive to your local computer repair shop and they will be able to get your photos off for you without having to worry about the viruses on the drive. If you live in the area that is a service I would be happy to provide for you. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,

I had many photos on Picasa3 on my old Dell computer, which I recently replaced. I thought when I logged into Picasa on my new HP computer, I would find all my photos and web albums. All I have are the web albums. I cannot find my photos anywhere. I thought they'd be stored in "the cloud" somewhere, but apparently all that is in the cloud are my web albums. I really would like all the other photos, of which there were hundreds. Are they hiding somewhere? Any ideas on what I could do to recover them? I'm worried I'll need to give up the search. I did save the old hard drive, but it had lots of viruses on it. Thanks very much, Mary

Get Cozy with Mendelssohn
KITTERY On Sunday, January 10, at 3 p.m., The Dance Hall kicks off the new year with its 2nd Sunday Chamber Music series “Get Cozy with the PSO, a collaboration with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra. This project highlights the Mendelssohn octet that was written when the composer was the tender age of 16, and features face-to-face string quartets, composed of principal players in the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra who have mentored a youth string quartet (at the age of Felix Mendelssohn when he wrote this) of highly talented musicians from within the orchestra.
“When you get to share your very favorite chamber music with young people who not only get it, they are playing it beautifully! Four of us "mature" professionals have mentored four young musicians who incidentally are the same age (or almost the same age!) as the composer who wrote this monumental octet. Get your Mendelssohn on! Bonus: Faure Elegie with eight celli. Dorothy Braker, the PSO’s principal cellist and organizer of The Dance Hall series. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at www.thedancehallkittery.org and www.brownpapertickts. com.

Health & Fitness Keep Your New Year’s Resolution With a 20-Minute Workout Use this high-intensity plan to blast more calories in less time. Moving in any way burns calories but sometimes a busy life calls for workouts that pack a punch. Sure, you could burn several hundred calories walking at one pace on the treadmill but it would take about two hours to get there. To burn the most calories in the least amount of time, a high-intensity workout that gets the heart pumping and fires up your metabolism while using the largest muscles in the body is the way to go. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been around since the 1970s but has become all the rage in recent years, topping the list of the hottest fitness trends in 2014. It gained new attention when Japanese trainer and scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata found that this form of training not only increases aerobic capacity, or stamina, but also improves anaerobic capacity, or ability to build muscle. HIIT is a training style comprised of short, intense
periods or exercise at maximum ability, followed by short rest periods. The workout mixes high intensity cardio activities like sprinting and strength training to deliver maximum muscle tone and weight loss in the shortest amount of time, fitting into even the busiest schedules. The efficiency of this fat burning workout is what makes the HIIT training method so popular. Using the HIIT method, you can even get a super effective treadmill workout in 20 minutes or less. Essentially, it takes 60 seconds of intense activity, then 30 seconds of rest, done 8 to 10 times to maximize results. Short on time but need to jumpstart your new year? All you need is this HIIT treadmill
workout to blast fat and tone muscle in the least amount of time! 20-Minute HIIT Treadmill Workout Start with a five-minute jog at a reasonably steady pace to warm-up and get your muscles ready to go. At the 5-minute mark, choose your “high intensity speed (aim for 10.0) and sprint at that speed for a minute. Then, select your rest speed and walk at rest speed for 30 seconds. Repeat the sprint at the highest intensity you can maintain adding an incline (preferably, 4.0) to mimic normal outdoor running conditions, and follow with 30 seconds of rest
and recovery. During recovery, walk at rest speed to lower your heart rate and prepare for the next high-intensity interval sprint. Complete 8-10 rounds for a total of 20 minutes, including the workout and recovery.
Cool down with a walk at a lower speed for two to three minutes, and stretch it out to avoid cramping. Dr. Kimberly S. Clay, aka Dr. Kim, is Executive Director and founder of Dallas-based charity, Play Like A Girl!ÂŽ, on a mission to inspire women See WORKOUT page 12...

Health & Fitness Make Skin Health a Priority in 2016 The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends sun safety as a healthy New Year's resolution. The beginning of a new year means starting fresh, particularly when it comes to health habits. In 2016, The Skin Cancer Foundation urges everyone to make skin health a top priority. Here are four healthy skin guidelines to follow in the new year: 1. Don't Skimp on Sun Protection Proper sun protection is essential year-round since the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays are present every day. Skin cancer is mainly a behavioral disease and it is strongly linked to sun exposure. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 86 percent of melanomas are caused by the sun's UV rays. For that reason, it's critical to follow a complete sun protection regimen to help prevent skin cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends incorporating the following sun protection tips into your daily routine:
Seek the shade, especially during the sun's peak hours, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Do not burn. Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply 1 ounce (about the size of a golf ball) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or excessive sweating. 2. Visit the Dermatologist Annually for a Professional Skin Exam While skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world, it's also one of the most treatable cancers when detected early. A yearly full-body skin exam performed by a dermatologist is critical, and can be
lifesaving. In fact, the five-year survival rate for patients whose melanomas are detected early is 98 percent, and this survival rate falls to 16 percent once the disease spreads to distant organs. 3. Perform Routine SelfExams In addition to having a professional skin check annually, it's important to examine your skin on a monthly basis to monitor for any new, changing or suspicious lesions. If you notice something new or changing, see a physician immediately. Performed regularly, self-exams should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes. Afraid you'll forget? Make selfexams a habit by scheduling a recurring reminder in your cell phone. 4. Ditch Tanning There is no such thing as a safe or healthy tan. Whether obtained on the beach, in a tanning bed, or through incidental sun exposure, a tan represents skin damage. Tans are the skin's attempt to repair itself
from UV damage from the sun or tanning lamps, and if you have a tan, you have sustained skin cell damage. These imperfect repairs cause gene defects that can lead to skin cancer as well as skin aging, including wrinkles, leathery skin and age spots. Those tempted to use a tanning bed this winter should think twice. People who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by an alarming 75 percent. Just one visit is all it takes to increase your skin cancer risk. A single session increases the risk for the two most common forms of skin cancer, basal cell
13
carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, by 29 percent and 67 percent, respectively. For more information, visit the Foundation's website, SkinCancer.org, which features more than 600 pages of medically-reviewed content on skin cancer prevention, early detection and treatment.

Yearly Eye Exams Can Reveal More Than Just Vision Trouble More evidence points to the importance of routine eye exams, not only to pinpoint potential conditions of the eye, but also to serve as windows to diseases that affect the entire body. Now more than ever it is essential to make and keep annual eye exams, as they can help to reveal the first signs of serious ailments. Doctors from around the world say dozens of diseases — from certain cancers to arthritis to high blood pressure — can show symptoms in the eye. Under the watchful and knowing gaze of an eyecare professional, individuals can
get early diagnosis and begin treatment promptly. According to Dr. Roy Chuck, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, there are many systemic diseases that can be seen in the eye. In addition to the conditions mentioned, jaundice can indicate liver disease while retinal detachment and bleeding in new blood vessels may indicate hypertension. By looking at the color of the cornea, some doctors can tell if a patient has elevated levels of cholesterol. Many people have had their
eye doctors be the first healthcare professional to detect the presence of their diabetes. If an ophthalmologist suspects an underlying medical condition, he or she will likely refer men and women to their primary care doctors for a more thorough examination. Going to the eye doctor can do more than ensure your vision is sharp. It’s a life-saving decision for many people who have major health conditions diagnosed through the eyes. Lodging Tax Rate Increases to 9 percent on January 1, 2016. The new 9 percent rate for the Maine lodging tax takes effect on January 1, 2016. Increased as part of the legislative budget agreement last session, the rate was increased to 9 percent. Two years ago both the meals and lodging taxes were "temporarily" increased from 7 percent to 8 percent with a sunset provision that would have reverted the rate back to 7 percent on June 30, 2015. Instead, the legislative agreement for the FY 2016 -2017 biennial budget repealed the sunset provision; kept the meals tax at 8 percent and increased the lodging tax by another percentage point to 9 percent. The main reason for the increase was the need to pay for an additional reduction in the income tax. Governor Lepage vetoed the budget and the legislature voted to override the veto. NORTH BERWICK Meet stunning Tess who came from a high kill shelter in North Carolina. She is a happy girl who would be an amazing family dog! Tess is spayed and up to date on all of her shots, she weighs about 35-40 pounds. She is great with other dogs, so would do well at the dog park or hiking trails. No kitties, as she likes to chase them. A fenced in yard or invisible fence is very helpful with hounds. Still needing homes: ACAR still has a great group of teenage kittens and a number of adult felines all looking to you for their new loving family. We also have a limited number of dogs looking to you for a new start in life. Please check out our adoptable pets at www.petfinder.com in the 03906 zip code. Much needed: We are in serious need of good dry dog

gram would like to remind citizens that all dog licenses need to be renewed by January 31, 2016. In order to streamline the licensing process, the agency offers an online service to complete this transaction. Online Dog Licensing was created in partnership with InforME, the state’s eGovernment service provider, and currently has over 110 participating municipalities. The service provides citizens in these municipalities with the opportunity to purchase new licenses and file renewals. The online service is available to the public each year between October 15 and January 31. During this time, an individual can request a new license for their dog or renew an existing license with their municipality. In order to complete the licensing process, customers will need to supply veterinarian and vaccination information. If a customer is renewing an existing license, they will also need to enter their dog’s current tag number. Funds received through the dog-licensing program are used to support numerous good causes throughout Maine, such as: Investigation of animal cruelty complaints and enforcement of animal welfare laws; Compliance with rabies vaccination of dogs; Care for sick and injured stray animals; Return of lost dogs to their owners. Online Dog Licensing is available through Maine.gov. For more information, contact the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry at 207-287-3846.

The Weekly Recipe: Betsy K’s Overnight French Toast Everyone loves French toast no matter how you make it. Add a bit of maple Ă&#x;avor extract to the egg mixture before cooking. Use Texas toast bread, an extra thick bread for added Ă&#x;avor, or use multigrain bread for that nutty Ă&#x;avor. Here is a new way to enjoy French toast that you will love and so will your family and guest.
Ingredients: 8 slices of French bread sliced ž of an inch thick 4 jumbo eggs 1 cup of milk 1 tablespoon of white sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 2 Tablespoons of orange juice ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract Ÿ cup of butter divided powdered sugar
Directions: 1} Place the sliced bread in a 13 by 9 by 2-inch container with cover. 2} In a medium mixing bowl combine
eggs, milk, sugar, salt, juice, and vanilla. Beat these ingredients well. Pour over the bread and turn the slices to coat evenly. Cover and place in the refrigerator overnight. 3} Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a sauce pan and add 4 slices of your French bread and cook for 4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining 4 slices. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve. Some of you might like to add the real maple syrup from New England or Canada. Prepare it Saturday night and cook for breakfast on Sunday morning. Serves 2 adults or 4 children. Enjoy! Shared by Paul Parent Newsletter.

...SOLAR from page 1 Solar Engineering, Maine's oldest solar company, located in Arundel, Me. “We enjoy working locally with schools like the Middle School of Kennebunks to supply long-term solar energy and educational opportunities for students. It is icing on the cake to be supplying an innovative, New England-made solar tracker for this project, a solar solution that will produce more energy from the sun and give the school greater energy benefits, said Inoue, owner of Solar Market & grandparent of an MSK student. "We are thrilled about
this school project for the Kennebunks School, which will provide clean energy to the facility as well as educate a new generation of solar leaders," added David Blittersdorf, president and CEO of AllEarth Renewables. "We commend Solar Market on this exciting project." Solar Market is an international solar engineering firm located in Arundel, Maine specializing in design, engineering, product assessment, financial modeling, technical consultation and construction since 1975. ...HAVEN from page 16 to warmer places for the winter. The shop is essential to Safe Haven’s operations and it takes many volunteer-hours to make it work. We’re now accepting applications for cashiers/shop help. If you can volunteer five hours per week, please call 2298314. We also need volunteers to work with the kitties at our Adoption Center. Living there is like living in a real home. It’s not a shelter environment. No cages. Kitties have sunny rooms with deep windowsills to sunbath in, cat trees, toys, beds, blankets and people to love and pet them. It’s as close to a real home as we can make it. Some of the kitties are shy or feral, and need your help to gain confidence and trust. In a sense, you’d be their personal trainer! You’ll need to commit to three hours per week with a routine to follow in each of our cat rooms with specific kitties. With your help, they’ll over-
come their fear and shyness, and become more likely to be adopted. If you’re seriously interested, talk to Joyce at 207229-8314.
YORK COUNTY – The Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation has announced a successful 2015 Toys for Tots Christmas season. Every year brings a stronger need for toy donations and thankfully, through the special efforts from many individuals and organizations in the surrounding areas, including Wells, Ogunquit, Kittery, Eliot and York, the foundation was able to fulfill their mission to provide toys for children in need. For the past few years, the York High School Boys Ice Hockey Team has helped by adopting the Toys for Tots Program using multiple media to ask their fans to bring new, unwrapped toys to their games. The results were outstanding. Mel Bates, Toys for Tots CoCoordinator, expressed thanks
