6th Annual “Shootin’ For A Cureâ€? Raises Record $35,000 WELLS – For the sixth year running, York Hospital was the clear winner of The Wells Lady Warriors’ “full court pressâ€? against breast cancer and for heart care during their “Shootin’ for a Cureâ€? (SFAC) basketball benefit. On Saturday, January 17, the Wells High School gym was an explosion of pink, red and hearts from the basketball players’ uniforms, the crowds’ shirts‌ even face paint of the full house of fans! This all day event, spearheaded by Coach Don Abbott, began with a free throw shoot out (the 8th grade winner, Mackenzie Foss, made 43 out of

50 shots) involving hundreds of 5th -12th grade girls who raised money through pledges and culminated in a high energy game against Traip Academy. Top

overall fundraiser was Olivia Durfee, who raised over $1,178, and received a set of wireless Beats by Dr. Dre headphones for her efforts. Sixty-two of sixty

nine girls raising at least $100 were entered into a drawing for a $500 shopping gift card. A bake sale and raffle highlighting all things pink, red and delicious, donated by the community and other local businesses were also held, adding to the festivities and causes’ bottom lines. In addition to this Saturday’s event, last August the Lady Warriors partnered with The Rotary Club of Wells to help plan, staff and run their 15th Annual Chuck Cumming Memorial Golf Tournament. Proceeds were split and the team was presented with a check for $10,250 which was added to the

SFAC event, ending with over $35,000 in donations to York Hospital. The money they raise will help support both the Hospital’s Heart Care for Women, along with Breast Cancer Living Well programs. The Heart Care program focuses on prevention, where female patients work with a team of dietitians, exercise physiologists, physicians and nurses to help tackle the issue of heart disease. The girls’ team, historically donating solely to the Breast Cancer fund, felt strongly about broadening the See SHOOTIN page 14...

The funding comes from the FHWA Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) Demonstration program that provides funding as an incentive for eligible entities to accelerate the implementation and adoption of innovation in highway transportation. This grant will provide the MEDOT funding for utilizing a Construction Manager/ General Contractor (CM/GC) on the bridge replacement proj-

YORK COUNTY – Thirteen volunteers from Habitat for Humanity York County will travel to San Marcos, Guatemala in March to help build homes for two Guatemalan families. “We will work alongside

the families to provide the ‘sweat equity’ for the project, said team leader Bill Parks, of Ogunquit. “We are blessed to live in homes with proper shelter, heat, clean water and sanitation. And if we can help provide some of these conditions for those less fortu-

nate, then we consider what we are doing more a privilege than work. Many families in Guatemala live in poorly constructed homes made of unstable materials, including corrugated metal sheets or palm thatching.

Over the years, Habitat for Humanity York County has helped fund the construction of over 26 homes for families in Guatemala. In September of 2014, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $25 million TIGER grant to specifically help replace the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge’s rail component, which supports an important national security need, enabling the safe and efficient transportation of materials from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The total project cost is approximately $158.5 million. The FHWA has classified the bridge as Structurally Deficient, and has noted its truss spans are fracture critical, meaning that the failure of steel tension members could result in collapse.

Kennebunk Free Library Liberty Ships and the Arctic Convoys of the 1940’s Liberty Ships crossed the Atlantic Ocean and sailed run through the northern seas past Norway to Murmansk, Russia. Their slowness made them a ready target and about 200 were lost through enemy action. Ocean cargo ships, commissioned by the British government, and U.S. Liberty cargo ships gave rise to the South Portland shipyards that thrived from 1941 to 1945. The shipyards employed 30,000 workers, including nearly 3,700 women, who worked as welders, painters, burners, crane operators, or riveters. Inanna, Sisters in Rhythm! KITTERY – Portland’s popular allwomen’s percussion and vocal ensemble return to The Dance Hall in Kittery, on Friday, January 30. Inanna, Sisters in Rhythm, is a world music drum, percussion and vocal ensemble that explores the heritage and rhythms of West Africa, through original arrangements and compositions invoking ancient traditions of the drum. Inanna was

originally created by the participants of a drum class in Ulna, Maine 23 years ago. Since that time, Inanna has recorded and released six, full-length albums and has performed at numerous percussion festivals and community events. Inanna is deeply dedicated to the education and cultivation of peace and sharing among cultures through the power of music. Inanna takes their name

from an ancient Sumerian goddess, who held reign more than 4,000 years ago during a period when it is believed that drummers and dancers were predominantly women. The ensemble chose the name of this ancient goddess to express their ties with earlier traditions. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at www.thedancehallkittery.org or www.brownpapertickets.com.

Marshwood Middle School Performs “Whimsy” SOUTH BERWICK All are invited to enjoy Marshwood Middle School's Musical "Whimsy", January 29, at 7 p.m., and January 31 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The delightful "Whimsy", directed and written by Miles Burns, and directed and choreographed by Alden Caple, with original music written by Scottie Hermenau, is the story of a little boy who has lost just that, his whimsy. A little boy who was once a dreamer and found magic in everything has started to see that the world can be a sad, cold and sometimes, a mean, uncaring place. How could a world like that hold any sort of magic or wonder at all and how can he find his whimsy? How can he get it back? This story is full of fairytale characters that help this little guy remember that whimsy is everywhere; it just depends on how you look at it and where you

look for it. This is the second year Caple and Burns have directed Marshwood Middle School's musical, and the fifth year Caple has worked on the MMS show. Currently the Drama Director at Portsmouth Middle and High School, Caple has choreographed over the past 8 years for several schools and theaters throughout New England and in Maui, HI.

Treat your Sweatheart to a night out!

As Co-Director of Youth Programming at Seacoast Repertory Theatre, Burns also works with students attending PAPA Camp, which provides opportunities for campers to pursue theatrical and artistic endeavors while offering a vibrant assortment of outdoor camp activities. The funny, touching “Whimsy” includes a cast of 23 talented Marshwood Middle School students who have been working hard at rehearsals these past few weeks. "This is one of the sweetest, most creative, willing and talented groups we have had a chance to work with," said Caple "This creative process is only enhanced by their readiness to dive into their characters and bring them to life." Performances will take place at Marshwood High School in South Berwick. Tickets can be purchased at the door at $5 for Students and Seniors/$7 for all others.

~ News ~ Kennebunk History In 50 Objects KENNEBUNK The Brick Store Museum’s newest exhibit, Kennebunk History in 50 Objects, opens Friday, January 23. Staff and volunteers at the museum worked for four months to carefully select artifacts from the Museum’s 70,000-item-strong collection to illustrate Kennebunk’s history in only 50 objects. This exhibit is sponsored by the Museum’s Business Partners the Captain Lord Mansion and the Captain Jefferds Inn. Included in the exhibit are a Penobscot birch bark canoe, bound-foot shoes from China, an early 20th Century surgical kit, a Civil War firearm, a 19th Century doll, firefighting tools, and much more to explain the history of Kennebunk in three

dimensions. Visitors can expect to find new items rotated monthly, to introduce a new story or topic from Kennebunk’s past. The Museum will also be seeking supplemental objects from the community, especially for those decades or stories for which the Museum’s collection is lacking; for instance, items from the Great Depression; the 1960s and 1970s; and more. Visitors will also be asked to share their own memories of the past, and what viewing each objects mean to them. Included with this exhibit will be an online forum through which community members can share their recollections of an event or artifact. Programs to accompany this exhibit include scheduled behind-the-scenes tours of col-

Old York Garden Club Hosts Speaker, Author, Garden Designer YORK Kerry Ann Mendez of “Perennially Yours” in Kennebunk was the bright and colorful speaker on an otherwise cold grey Maine day for the Old York Garden Club and guests. Kerry Ann’s mission was to lead the gardeners through the thought process of simplifying gardening. Her message: people and their life styles and needs change and so should their gardens. All gardeners have purchased some labor intensive, poorly performing plants that require countless hours staking, dead-heading, de-

bugging, watering, dividing and transplanting. Why, Kerry asks: “since they are only plants, not family or pets, can’t you give them away or compost them?” She reminded the gardeners to think beyond: Mix herb and vegetable plants with perennials; Move to container gardening, be it in a large vessel or a vertical hanging garden along a wall or fence; Re-purpose an old fishing boot or wagon as a whimsical container. Mendez has published a number of easy to follow tips at www.pyours.com.

“Our home was on the market for a year with very little interest and no offers. It had been off the market for two months when Phyllis approached us with suggestions on how to market the property. For three weeks she and Jenna worked round the clock, staging the house using mostly our furnishings and adding their own special touches and personal accessories. Phyllis supervised the professional photos that were taken. When the house was put on the market we were inundated with showings and had a signed purchase and sale within a month at 98% of the asking price. We have purchased and sold many properties in our lifetime and have never seen anything like the personal attention, commitment and professionalism of Phyllis and Jenna. – Janet & Steve Erickson

BUSINESS & FINANCE Maine Businesses Secure Additional Funds from DECD for Lending and Jobs

STATEWIDE – The Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) has announced that Maine has secured an additional $4,345,555 in funding for the state's small businesses through a second disbursement from the U.S. Treasury Department's State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI). "These funds will enable Maine's small businesses to leverage new capital and create more jobs," said Governor Paul R. LePage. "The program's successful deployment shows that our economy and our businesses are growing and moving in the right direction. In partnership with DECD, the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), regional economic development agencies, and the Maine Venture Fund, small business owners will continue to have more resources for growth."

The state was awarded a total allocation of $13.2 million in September 2011. To date, the federal funds have generated $36 million in private sector financing to Maine businesses. Approximately $4 million in funding has already been disbursed to Maine businesses through FAME's Economic Recovery Loan Program, regional economic development agencies, as well as the Small Enterprise Growth Fund, d/b/a Maine Venture Fund. "Maine job creators need access to credit and capital in order to create jobs and hire new employees," said DECD Commissioner George Gervais. "Maine's economic recovery is driven by small businesses and their vision for growth. Small business owners will now have more resources for that growth." Lincoln Paper & Tissue, LLC, a Lincoln-based manufacturer of commodity and specialty tissue products, received a

$970,000 loan through FAME's Economic Recovery Loan Program, of which $470,000 constituted SSBCI funds. FAME's investment has induced a commercial lender to invest an additional $6 million into the project. FAME's actions helped the mill retain 175 direct jobs and hundreds more indirect jobs in the local economy. "Lincoln Paper & Tissue greatly appreciates FAME's assistance and commitment to the success of the mill," stated Keith

Van Scotter, President and CEO. "FAME's efforts and commitment to the region will go a long way toward helping to retain good-paying jobs in the area and to a bright future for the facility." "We are pleased that our success is being rewarded with an additional $4.3 million to fund the growth of Maine's small business community," said Bruce Wagner, Chief Executive Officer of FAME. "With the help of Maine's financial institutions, we hope to leverage these funds

with private capital to generate $26 million for Maine's economy." SSBCI was created by the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010. Funded with $1.5 billion, the program is expected to spur up to $15 billion in new lending to small businesses and manufacturers as states use federal funds to leverage private investment dollars. Mentors can serve as trusted confidantes to young people in need of professional guidance, providing the support or advice many need to break into a given industry. While mentoring is most commonly associated with the professional arena, it need not be restricted to corporate environments. When looking to give back to their communities, men and women may not think of mentoring. However, mentoring can be a powerful empowerment and personal development tool, for both mentors and the people being mentored. The following are a handful of tips to foster a successful mentoring relationship. • Ask a lot of questions. Mentors should expect to field a lot of questions, but they also should ask their share of questions. Asking questions is a good way to challenge people and get them thinking about various scenarios and situations they may find themselves in. See MENTOR page 13...

Bangor Savings Bank to Add New Ogunquit Branch OGUNQUIT – Maine’s largest independent bank, Bangor Savings Bank, announced its plans to expand its presence in York County by opening its newest branch at 196 Main Street in Ogunquit. The bank has entered into a lease agreement subject to standard regulatory approvals. The building, previously utilized as a bank branch, will undergo renovation and modernization before being open for business as early as April, becoming

Bangor Savings Bank’s sixth branch in York County. Bob Montgomery-Rice, President of Bangor Savings commented, “The opening of the Ogunquit branch is an exciting addition and complements the bank’s existing presence in York County. This is a vibrant and growing region of the state, and we look forward to serving the businesses and people in the Ogunquit area with our unique combination of responsive customer service from a local, independent Maine bank, with all of

...MENTOR from page 12 This will help shape the person you’re mentoring into an individual who can anticipate situations and deal with them on his or her own. • Ensure confidentiality. Confidentiality should be of paramount importance in a mentoring relationship. The person you’re mentoring should feel comfortable coming to you with any situation and have your support, as trust is essential to the mentor-mentee relationship. • Stretch a person’s abilities. The goal of a mentor is not to solve all of his or her mentee’s problems. Delegate tasks and provide advice to lead the mentee in the right direction. Encourage a mentee to take on more responsibilities, which can instill confidence and facilitate personal growth. • Enjoy the experience. Mentors benefit from mentoring, which can provide satisfaction and a sense of accomplish-

ment that results from knowing you played an integral role in the success of another person. If your career is in a slump, mentoring may provide the breath of fresh air you need to recharge. Mentoring also may give you insight into another person’s life, which can be used in your own personal development. As long as your goal is the success and support of the mentee, mentoring can be a selfless act that touches the lives of others. Formal mentoring programs exist, but mentoring relationships often begin when a less formal connection forms between two people. Should a friend, employee or colleague ask for your assistance in mentoring, embrace this compliment and make the most of your opportunity to aide in the growth of another person This article was provided by MetroCreative. Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Meet Bugsy, a 5-year-old Lionhead rabbit. The Lionhead breed is named for the additional plume of fur they have about their head and neck. Bugsy looks positively adorable because of it. He’s very social and loves being picked up and held. He would be more than happy to share a new home with young children. Best keep Bugsy occupied and entertained in a new home though, as he does have a habit of chewing on clothing when bored. Perhaps he has some goat in his family tree. And don’t forget that January offers “Name Your Own Price for rabbits!

WELLS When Jacqueline and Karl Epper walked into our thrift shop and handed us an envelope, I never suspected that its contents would be the answer to our latest financial challenge. The envelope contained $16,500, the exact amount needed to purchase a combination heating/cooling system for our new adoption center! The Eppers knew we

needed it, and being the great animal lovers they are, they wanted to ensure Safe Haven got what we needed. We’re thrilled to receive this huge contribution. Jackie and Karl are now among the largest contributors to our building campaign, and their generosity will never be forgotten. After our boiler is installed, insulation and drywall come next. A once-vacant, rundown building is now strong and efficient thanks to the incredible skill, planning and hard work of Rex Lambert and his team. We’re getting so close to our goal to move into the new center at the end of February.

Please continue (or begin!) your financial support! Insulation, drywall, new doors, windows and trim, flooring and a security system add up to a $45,000 financial challenge. Make Safe Haven part of your family legacy! Windows and plaques are available for a $125 donation, and memory garden stones for $250. Plaques that honor your contribution will hang at our center forever. It’s a great way to honor your loved ones. Rex doesn’t waste any time, so when work had to pause recently on our new building, he erected a new “Scaredy Cat School enclosure at our thrift shop. Well, he didn’t do it alone. Kanga, our shop cat, (see photo)

helped. This longhaired tuxedo told Rex exactly what to do and how to do it. Now our feral scaredy cats have a “classroom where they’ll get used to people and learn lots of amazing tricks, like laser tag, cat-tree climbing, and sun bathing. Ah, life is good for Safe Haven Scaredy Cats. Come visit and see it for yourself.

In 1939 his was among the many Polish families seized and forced to hard labor camps in Siberia. They were later deported to the Middle East. Stefan came to England in 1942 as a cadet in the Polish Air Force and later served in the Royal Air Force. In 1953 Stefan married Ingeborg Kunert. He trained as a cabinet maker and began his career building, creating and working with his hands. Stefan and Inge settled in the greater London area and had three children. In 1971 they emigrated, and for the next 36 years Stefan and Inge lived in Livingston, NJ. Stefan founded a business as a private contractor. In 2007, he and Inge made Kittery Point their home. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, In the past, my PDF documents could be saved and stored in a Word folder. Now, my PDF documents have a FireFox icon, open on an online page, and save to my word documents ready to return to the internet. What's going on? Am I in the cloud and don't know it? Why are my PDF documents opening the internet when I want to read them? Sincerely, Joy Dear Joy, Although I can't tell for sure without looking at your computer, it sounds like your file association for .pdf files has been changed to open in FireFox instead of Adobe Acrobat Reader. There are a couple

of ways you can fix this. The easiest way might be to go to www.adobe.com and download and re- install Adobe Acrobat Reader. Reinstalling the program should reset the file association and all .pdf files will once again open in Adobe. The other way is to reset the file association in Windows. You didn't mention which version of Windows you are using, but this should work for Windows 7 and 8: 1. Open the Control Panel, click on "Programs" then click on "Default Programs" and "Set Associations". 2. You will see a list of file types. Scroll down until you find your .pdf listed and double click on it. 3. You will see a list

The Computer Lady Can Help You Keep Your Computer Secure In 2015! Available Services include:

Computer Tune-up Virus & Malware Removal One Year Antivirus & Anti-malware Coverage Computer Repair Data Backup to DVD or USB Drive

of programs, select the one you want to use to open .pdf files in the future. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I hope you can help me. When I turn on my computer a screen appears that is locked. Normally I can open this with my mouse. Now I cannot get into it. I've checked my mouse and keyboard and they are OK. I have windows 8. 1. My computer is Lenova. I would appreciate any suggestions. Control, alt, delete doesn't unlock the screen. I love your columns. Thank you for your help, Helene Dear Helene, While it is possible that there is a problem with your mouse, keyboard or the computer itself, it is also possible that your solution is as simple as one key on the keyboard. If you are looking at the lock screen that usually has a rainbow on it, try the "Enter" key on your keyboard. That should bring you to the login screen. If that doesn't work, I would need to take a look at your computer in order to troubleshoot the problem. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Please tell me how to clear my browser history. Thank you so much, I love your news letters. Gladys

Dear Gladys,

New Date and Venue for Cyber Workshop

YORK The Cyber Security Workshop previously planned for Jan. 29 at the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce, has been rescheduled to Thursday, Feb. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at the York Public Library. Visit http://business.gatewaytomaine.org/events for details. How you clear your browser history depends on what browser you are using. I'm guessing that you are using Internet Explorer: 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Click on the "tools" icon (looks like a gear in the upper-right corner of the window) then click on "Internet Options". 3. In the "Browsing History" section on the "General" page, click the "Delete..." button. 4. Make sure that "History" is checked off, then click the "Delete" button at the bottom of the dialog box. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I stop people from posting things on my Facebook page? Thanks, Jane Dear Jane, You can actually change one of the Facebook settings to determine who can write on your Facebook timeline. Here is how: 1. Log into your Facebook Account. 2. Click the drop down arrow in the left of the blue search bar, and click

on "Settings" in the drop down list that appears. 3. In the left hand column, click on "Timeline and Tagging". 4. In the main page, you will see a section that says, "Who can add things to my timeline?" There are two settings you can change here. Under "Who can post on your timeline?" you can select either "Friends" or, "Only Me". 5. The next settings allows you to review posts in which friends tag you and decide if you want them to show up on your timeline or not. You can turn that setting either off or on. Your settings will take effect as soon as you make them and click "Close" to the right of your selection , and you can go back and change them at any time. Elizabeth Interested in learning more?
