Local Couple Creates Fundraiser for Autism By Maura Curley Special to Sentinel YORK When Greg and Christa welcomed their first child in December of 2010 they, like most new parents, didn’t know what to expect. Three years later they have learned more than they could have imagined, about parenting a child with a disability. The couple’s son Jackson, who turned three years old last December, was diagnosed with autism in October. Greg Silva says he and his wife noticed that Jackson was slow in his physical development, such as rolling over, crawling and walking. Then he wasn’t talking. The diagnosis, according to Silva, “took us back a little.” He says he and his wife were concerned about a hard life ahead for their son. But now they’re determined to help Jackson, as well as other children in Maine who have autism. Silva, who is the banquet manager at York Harbor Inn, and his wife Christa have organized a fundraiser April 2, from 5p.m. to

8p.m. in the ballroom of the inn to raise money for Maine Autism Alliance and Frasier Ford Development Center, where Jackson goes to school three hours a day, five days a week.

The event, according to Silva, will be like “a cocktail mixer for the family” with food stations serving gourmet pizzas for adults, and finger food for children. There will also be a

raffle, a silent auction of enviable prizes, a photo booth and DJ. The event coincides with the United Nation’s designation for April 2 as “World Autism Awareness Day”. During the month of April there is also a national initiative called: “Light It Up Blue” to create awareness about autism. Silva says many businesses and landmarks, such as the Empire State Building will be lighting up their structures with blue lights on April 2, as a demonstration of solidarity. The York Harbor Inn fundraiser will also celebrate the “Light It Up Blue” theme with blue lights. Silva says there will even be blue desserts at the buffet table, donated by Kate Design Delights in Kittery. Silva says he hopes the event will raise aware-

ness about autism, as well as money for the Maine’s autism organizations. He points out that Jackson is happy and doing well at the Frasier Ford Development Center, thanks in part to early intervention and the growing awareness of how to help people with autism. He says he and his wife, who is expecting their second child, hope to have Jackson able to enter first grade in pubic school. “That’s our goal”, he says. Silva observes his wife has been “amazing” in getting the right services for their son. He points out that one in 88 children in the United States have been diagnosed with autism, which is significantly more than See AUTISM page 24...

~ News ~ Blue Wrap Project Runway Fashion Show Seeking Designers A fundraising fashion show where all the clothing is made from recycled fabric used to sterilize surgical supplies in all hospitals in the U.S. PORTLAND Organizers of the Blue Wrap Project Runway Fashion Show are looking for fashion designers who want to challenge their creative juices to design a piece from recycled blue medical wrap material. The goal of this fundraising event is to bring awareness to the organization’s efforts of recycling discarded medical supplies while improving global health. The fashion show will be held on April 24 on the catwalk at USM”s Hannaford Hall. Tory Ryden, host of “Real Lives, Real Women” and former Boston and Portland TV anchor, will be the mistress of ceremonies for the fun-filled evening. The fashion show will be the main attraction, with more than 10 designers, including Judy Gailen of Portland, creating fashion pieces. Gailen works internationally on set design. The Portland Ballet, under the direction of Eugenia O’Brien, will be performing a brief dance, “Masquerade”, choreographed by Nell Shipman. Ellen Chickering of USM will present a PORTopera young artist in a brief musical interlude. In addition the Bossong Family Children will play the violin in concert. The goal this year is to ship

12 containers full of medical supplies around the world, but with each container costing approximately $10,000 to $15,000, including shipping and processing fees, the organization will

Health & Fitness Expert to Discuss New Hip Replacement Technology YORK Dr. Akhil Sastry, board certified orthopaedic surgeon and member of Atlantic Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, will present: “What’s Hip About Joint Pain?” on

April 3 at York Library, beginning at noon. Dr. Sastry will be speaking about the latest advancements in hip surgery. He is one of few surgeons in New England who specializes in direct anterior hip replacement

Tips for Working Out in the Great Outdoors

Spring is (really!) here. Many people take advantage of the nicer weather by exercising outdoors. Some might skip the treadmill at the gym in favor of running at the park, while others join recreational sports leagues for some exercise and fun in the sun. But exercising outdoors carries its share of risk. Unlike gyms where machinery clearly advises members about proper form and warns against lifting excessive weight, Mother Nature comes with no such warning labels. It’s up to you to make injury prevention a priority when taking your exercise routine outside. The following are a handful of preventative measures that can help avoid injury. Study the terrain. Certain areas in nature might not be suitable to all athletes. For example, mountain biking is a popular sport, but not all mountain biking trails are the same. Some trails are ideal for beginners, while others are best ridden by more seasoned riders. When your outdoor exercise regimen will be taking you off the beaten path, be sure you know the terrain before you start your workout. Speak with fellow outdoor enthusiasts about which trails or courses are best for someone of your skill level and adhere to their recommendations. When exercising on a trail for the first time, bring a friend along so someone can go get help should

surgery. This technique differs from traditional hip replacement surgery; using a minimally invasive, muscle sparing technique. Unlike traditional posterior hip replacement, this approach does not require the surgeon to cut into the muscle surrounding the hip joint to fit the replacement. Patients require less recovery time, and benefit from shorter hospital stays and more flexibility and mobility after the operation. Dr. Sastry has performed

hundreds of surgeries using this new technique, and as an expert in this procedure has educated other physicians at facilities across the country. He is the first physician in the Seacoast to perform direct anterior hip replacement and has created a dedicated website to help patients understand the benefits and techniques of this procedure at seacoastanteriorhip.com. The York Hospital Women’s Committee will sponsor this event. Lunch will be served. Registration is required. RSVP to York Hospital at 207-351-2835.

ing easier. Savvy Caregiver consists of six two-hour class sessions, and encourages participants to try out ideas at home. Participants are asked to attend all six classes in the series. Honestly assess your abilities. Warm air and sunshine have a way of encouraging you to prolong workout routines or push a little harder. Do an honest assessment of your abilities before beginning an outdoor exercise regimen. Once you know what your body can and can’t handle, you can tailor your outdoor workout to one that makes the most of nice weather without putting your health at risk. Don’t challenge Mother Nature. One of the biggest risks exercising outdoors is the tendency to ignore the elements. Avoid working out in hot weather, as such conditions are not conducive to exercise. Extreme weather also reduces the number of people outside, which means there won’t be as many people around to help you if you suffer an injury, lose your way or need help with your gear. York Lady Wildcats 5th Annual “Hoops For A Cure” Raises $12K towards Cancer Programs YORK A reception was recently held to thank York High School girl’s basketball team, who for the fifth consecutive year galvanized the community, with their “Hoops for a Cure” event raising over $12,000 for the Breast Care cancer programs at York Hospital. The hoop event, spread over two weekends, was a combination of winter carnival, sporting event, food festival and fundraiser. It featured a free-throw shoot-out, and an evening of entertainment, which included dozens of raffle baskets donated by York winter sport teams from the department of Parks and Recreation, York Middle School and York High School along with many silent auction items. A packed house watched a full day of basketball games (First Team Boys, JV and Varsity Girls and JV and Varsity Boys) versus Kennebunk. Ruby’s Wood Grill and York Hospital’s dining services donated lunch, dinner and dessert. Jud Knox, president of York Hospital, was “thrilled” with the overwhelming turnout and enthusiastic support shown by the girls, coaches, parents and certainly the other teams

who contributed to the event’s success.” At the thank you reception, Susan Kelly-Westman, clinical oncology social worker, told the team: “The money you raised will help support both the hospital’s breast cancer and Living Well With Cancer programs designed to improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with, undergoing treatment for and recovering from cancer. These funds support programs and services including exercise and physical rehabilitation, integrative therapies such as massage and Reiki, emergency funds for gas and food, assistance with prosthetics and nutritional guidance.” For more information about York Hospital’s Living Well With Cancer Programs, contact the Friendraising Office at 207-3512385 or info@yorkhospital.com.

York Hospital representatives received a $12,000 check from the York High School “Hoops for A Cure” fundraiser: (Back Row, L-R) Girls’ Varsity Coach Rick Clark, York Hospital CFO, Robin LaBonte, Madeline Leroux, Mia Briggs, Chloe Smedley, Rene Abruzzese, Allie Laverson, Lily Posternak, Jill Hines, Suzanne Donovan – (Front Row L-R) Coach Lutts, Erin McCafferty, Paige McElwain, Morgan Chapman, Stephanie Rundlett, Anne Graziano

Simple Ways To Combat Insomnia Men and women who experience trouble sleeping may find that their inability to get a good night’s rest affects every aspect of their daily life. difficult to fall asleep at night, insomnia is often a sign of something more significant and, unfortunately, longer lasting. Acute insomnia can last from one night to a few weeks, but insomnia that occurs at least three nights a week for a month or longer is considered chronic. Men and women who suspect they might be suffering from insomnia should contact a physician, who can help determine the cause of the insomnia and develop a course of treatment. In the meantime, there are a few things that may help.

Establish a routine. According to the Sleep Council, establishing a sleep routine in which you go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time every day can program the body to sleep better. Stick to this

routine as closely as possible, even on weekends, when you may be tempted to sleep in or stay up later. See INSOMNIA page 24...

Great Wines Tell an Honest Story more than a dollar or two for a cup of lemonade. But what if a budding entrepreneur asked for $20? Would you still make the purchase? Probably not. But if offered a glass of great wine, few oenophiles would hesitate to spend such a sum. Many would be

~ Where To Dine ~ ...WINE from page 18 The topic? What sommeliers drink when spending their own money. Many wine enthusiasts envy sommeliers, since they routinely open and taste bottles most of us could never afford. They get to hang out with fascinating winemakers from across the world. But when they’re home, sommeliers are just like the rest of us – fully aware of budgets and priorities, but still looking for something great. A “great wine,” Madrigale contended, “offers an honest reflection of where it came from.” Madrigale’s words were spot on. In part, wine is special because it’s able to translate time and place. Great ones achieve that higher purpose. This concept certainly isn’t original. Fans of Burgundy and Mosel often battle over which region’s wines better express the characteristics of their vintage and the soils and climate in which they’re grown. Ted Lemon, one of America’s leading Pinot Noir producers, has even gone so far as to urge his colleagues to “give up being a winemaker” and instead “have the confidence to listen [to the vineyard] and allow the site to speak.” Lemon was addressing the 2013 Mornington Peninsula International Pinot Noir Celebration, a major event in Australia. “Your job is to craft wines which are the most honest, crystalline expression of their place and then let others decide if they feel that your efforts are worthy,” he continued. So when picking up their own tab, sommeliers seek wines that are truthful and transparent. Madrigale’s second answer See MORE page 20...

to what makes wine so special is just as important. “Wine is not just a beverage,” he said. “It’s a story.” This concept, too, has been around for quite some time. Consider older wines. They’re a connection to the past and each bottle has a story to tell. I’ll never forget the evening a friend shared a 1961 Château Ausone. The estate is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated, and 1961 was a legendary vintage. The wine was stunning -- still

fresh and vibrant -- but that was almost beside the point. In 1961, John F. Kennedy was inaugurated and France was still at war with Algeria. So while tasting the wine, much of my focus was on those who made it and the world they inhabited. Young wines are just as capable of telling great stories. This past weekend, I opened a Pinot Noir from Forge Cellars, a producer in New York’s Finger Lakes. Those of us who obsess over Pinot Noir like to think we can identify a wine’s origin by simply putting our noses in a glass. But this wine was unlike anything I’d ever had. It stopped me in my tracks, as it had obviously captured the essence of Finger Lakes Pinot Noir. Lemonade simply can’t offer a window to other places and cultures. Few would ever discuss lemonade’s honesty. But wine? Great ones always tell an honest story. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I am now running Vista on my older computer and an old Pfaff program. My 3D File Assistant will not run on Vista and will not run on Windows 7 or 8 (This is the only way to get embroidery designs from my computer to my Pfaff machine.) It runs fine on Windows XP so I am thinking of installing virtual Windows XP on my Vista machine and on any new computer. Are there any reasons for not doing this? I am fairly computer literate and this is something I think I can do, but I have never done before so I don’t know the pitfalls. I think your newsletter is great, I have learned a lot. Priscilla Dear Priscilla, Before you decide to use Windows XP mode in Win-

dows Virtual PC, you need to make sure your computer meets the system requirements. Otherwise it won’t work correctly even though you might be able to download and install them. According to the Microsoft website, you need to be running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate edition. Windows 7 Home edition won’t work. But I did find a website with excellent directions for installing Virtual PC on Vista at: http:// wp.me/pwwRq-1PF This should allow you to continue to use your embroidery software, but remember that the virtual XP will not be updated after April 8 either. I suggest you run the virtual XP only when you need to, and disconnect from the Internet while using it. Elizabeth

On April 8, 2014, Windows XP becomes Windows XPired! Microsoft will stop providing security updates which keep your data safe. Continuing to use XP will be like leaving home at night, leaving the lights on with the front door open and a big sign saying,

“My Security System is Broken!”

Call The Computer Lady TODAY to help you keep the bad guys out! 207-676-9561

Dear Computer Lady, I have a new PC with Windows 8, the HP Pavilion. What can I do to keep from having to log in all the time? I know one can set it so any one can use it. I tried to do that but it will not work. Road Runner techs did not help me either. Can you help me? Carmen Dear Carmen, I can help you with this! You will need to open the advanced User Accounts program, which is hidden unless you know where to look for it. 1. Go to your start screen (my favorite way to go there is to tap the windows logo key) and type the following in the search box: netplwiz If you don’t see a search box in the start screen, don’t worry, just start typing and it will appear. Tap the “Enter” key on your keyboard and the “User Accounts” dialog box will open. 2. The very first item in this dialog box says: “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer” Click to remove the check mark from this item and click the “OK” button at the bottom of the dialog box. 3. A new dialog box will open prompting you to type the user name and password for your user account. Enter the user name (make sure the user name is correct, sometimes windows

puts a shortened version there) and type your password twice, then click “OK”. Restart your computer to make sure the new settings are working. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I recently purchased a Dell machine in order to get a larger screen. I choose to get Windows 7, as the learning curve would be seamless. It came loaded with some tricky redirection software. When I went to Google, I ended up with a different browser http://www.bing.com/search, which has a lot of advertising before you can actually look at potential answers. I remember you wrote about this problem a few years ago about how to find and delete these interfering messages. Thanks, Judi Dear Judi, Bing is actually a search engine from Microsoft. It used to be called various different names including Live Search, Windows Live Search and MSN Search. Since Microsoft also makes the Windows operating system, it sets new computers up with Bing as the default search engine, and often the default home page. It might even have included a Bing toolbar. It sounds like in your case

that you need to set Google as your home page, and as your default search engine. To set your home page, first navigate to the page you want to use as your home page (in this case, Google), and then click the gear icon in the upper-right corner, click “Internet Options” then click the “Use Current” button. To remove Bing from your list of search engines, click the gear icon, and then click “Manage Add-ons”. Click on “Search Providers” in the left column, click on “Bing” in the right column and click the “Remove” button. Elizabeth Comments This Week: Posted By: Andrevm In Response to: Can’t Open CD Drive On the door of every CD, DVD reader, there is always a tiny little hole: Put a paper fastener through that hole, and push until the door unlocks itself. You may continue to use the CD or DVD reader, but you may have to use the paper fastener each time to eject the disk. This costs you a lot less than a new reader. Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Come browse her articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at: www.askthecomputerlady.com/questions.

~ Pets ~ Puppy Raisers Wanted Are you ready to be part of something extraordinary? The Maine Region of Guiding Eyes for the Blind is looking for people in the Southern Maine area to take wonderful pups into their hearts and homes for 14 to 16 months to teach basic skills and socialize these exceptional puppies. Puppy raisers

Safe Haven Humane Society

receive ongoing local support every step of the way and free veterinary care. Plus its lots of fun. Attend an open house in Portland on Friday, April 4 to learn more. Puppy sitters wanted too. Ready to find out more? E-mail for details - janetamberger@yahoo.com.

WELLS A month ago Safe Haven received a call from Bill in Berwick. His neighbors had moved and left their cat locked in their garage. Bill rescued the kitty, but due to his landlord’s nocats rule, he had to feed the cat outside. The storms were fierce this winter, and the man worried about the fate of this cat. On terribly cold nights, the big orange tabby would beat his tail on the door, begging to be let inside. Bill could only allow him into the hallway, where the kitty enjoyed the warmth of indoors, blankets and food. This loving relationship went on for nearly two months. Bill finally called Safe Haven to take the cat – Rufus. This sturdy orange tabby loves people. He’s currently roaming freely in the cage-free adoption center and is available for adoption. If you don’t see him, look in the thrift shop’s linen closet,

where he often snoozes. Come meet and play with Rufus Safe Haven’s Adoption Center and Thrift Shop is located at 1616 Post Rd, (Rt. 1), Wells, just north of Rt. 109. Call 646-1611 for more information. Donations and volunteers welcome.
