Costantini Among Youngest Black Belts in US KITTERY Nick Costantini of Kittery, has been awarded his 1st Dan black belt in Taekwondo by the Kukkiwon, the governing body of the World Taekwondo Federation in Seoul, South Korea. At age 9, he is currently one of the youngest black belts recognized by the Kukkiwon in the United States. He has been training in the Korean martial art since May 2009 under the expert instruction of Grandmaster Sun Woo Park at Park’s Taekwondo School in Portsmouth, NH. Grandmaster Park is an 8th Dan black belt in Taekwondo. Nick was required to pass a
series of rigorous, multi-faceted tests in order to earn belt promotion. His 1st Dan test required candidates to display proficiency in kicking, blocking and punching techniques; demonstrate a series of ‘Poomsae’, or a defined sequence of memorized movements which simulate offensive and defensive maneuvers; onestep sparring which replicates self-defense and takedown methods; multiple rounds of contact sparring; a written essay and test regarding knowledge of Korean terms and the philosophical tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. His test concluded with a four-station board
break. He is also a participant in Park’s Taekwondo Demo team, which travels throughout the Seacoast to perform various elements of the martial art, including synchronized drills, contact sparring and board breaking, all of which emphasize speed, agility, and power. Taekwondo, which in Korean means “The art of kicking and punching” has over 30 million participants worldwide in 175 countries, and became an official Olympic medal sport at the 2000 Sydney games. Bridge and Traffic Changes in Wells WELLS The Town of Wells Public Works will be replacing the Bridge on Tatnic Road near Hilton Lane and closing the road at that location on Tuesday, April 15, and re-opening during the workday on Thursday, April 17. The new bridge

replaces the existing bridge that was restricted earlier this year to a 3-ton maximum because of its poor structural condition. Alternative routing is advised. MaineDOT acquired the former 7-11 property from Irving Oil will be widening the intersection for a right turn lane from Mile Road onto Route 1. The town will be installing a standard paver sidewalk from the curb cut at the Irving gas station, around the corner, and down Mile Road to the pump station. All work should be completed by May 29.
A MaineDOT Public Hearing was held April 9 at the Wells Town Hall to discuss the modification and interconnection of traffic signals at the Route 1 intersections of Mile Rd, Wells Plaza and Route 9B. Also considered was the upgrade of pedestrian facilities to meet current ADA standards. The MaineDOT also intends to install a traffic light at Chapel Road and Route 109, as well as updating the toll plaza at Exit 19 this year.

The Governor’s proclamation cited the many accomplishments of the American Legion since its incorporation by an act of Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans’ organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. A few of these include: There are more than 2.3 million members of the Legion, making it the nation’s largest wartime veterans’ service organization in the United States. The American Legion has nearly 14,000 posts in every

AUGUSTA There are some folks who think that the American Legion is just a bunch of old guys sitting around “bars” telling war stories. Nothing could be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, less than a third of the 175 posts in Maine have lounges and the organization is run by young and old wartime vets who continue serving disabled veterans, kids, the community and nation. In recognition of the American Legion’s 99th birthday, Governor Paul LePage proclaimed March 15 as American Legion Day in the state of Maine. In a ceremony held at

community in the United States. In addition to having one in every state, the Legion has posts in the District of Columbia, France, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. In 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the original GI Bill, or Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, ushering in monumental changes in U.S. society. Six months earlier, The American Legion wrote the first draft of what later became the “GI Bill of Rights” – considered the Legion’s single greatest legislative achievement. Higher education becomes democratized after 8 million veterans go to school on the GI Bill, get better jobs, buy houses in the suburbs and raise families. On Aug. 9, 1921, a Legionled effort resulted in the creation of the U.S. Veterans Bureau, which later became the Veterans Administration. The first “Flag Code” was drafted during a Legion conference in Washington in 1923. Congress adopts the code in 1942. Today, the Legion is at the

Legion Baseball was formed in 1925 during an American Legion South Dakota Department state convention. By 1926, Legion Baseball posts in 15 states developed. Today, the program registers more than 5,400 teams in all 50 states, Canada and Puerto Rico. Approximately 20,000 young men annually participate in Boys State, a Legion program dedicated to promoting leadership. Boys State alumni include former President Bill Clinton, news commentator Tom Brokaw, professional basketball player Michael Jordan, astronaut Neil Armstrong and many more. Since 1938, The American Legion National High School Oratorical Program: “A Constitutional Speech Contest,” has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship. Many politicians and news anchors have been participants, including CNN anchor Lou Dobbs. Since 1919, American Legion posts have sponsored more than 2,500 scouting units across the country. Kennebunkport Resident Gives Record Gift of $17.5 Million to Transform 124-Year-Old Institution
KENNEBUNKPORT Dominican University of California received its largest gift to date recently, $17.5 million - by a Kennebunkport resident. Andrew Barowsky, chair of the University’s Board of Trustees officially presented the gift to Dominican yesterday. When fully realized the gift will mean $25 million in new revenue to the university, initiated by $17.5 million in outright gifts led by the chairman. It will enable Dominican to launch a renewed vision of liberal arts education that will benefit all students. Dominican’s student population, which mirrors California’s demographic shift, is the future of higher education nationwide. The gift also will establish the Andrew P. Barowsky
School of Business, expand the University’s international programming through the creation of the Françoise O. Lepage Center for Global Innovation, and launch the Acacia Project, a series of long-term upgrades to the physical campus. “Andrew Barowsky’s gift is unique, as it is not funding just one building or one program,” President Marcy said. “He is investing in creating an important new vision that will ensure that every student’s education leads not simply to a successful career but to a purposeful, effective life.” About Andrew P. Berwick-Somersworth Bridge Being Replaced BERWICK The bridge that carries Routes 9 and 236 over the Salmon Falls River between Maine and N.H., is being replaced. The $2.4 million construction project will result in the addition of a turning lane on the bridge, enhanced five-foot sidewalks on both sides of the bridge and an improved railroad crossing in Somersworth. Though two lanes of traffic will be maintained on the bridge, traffic flowing into Berwick from Somersworth will not be allowed to turn left when exiting
the bridge. Instead traffic will be re-routed to Wilson Street via Route 9. All businesses will be open and accessible. The bridge will be fully closed for two weekends, one starting Friday, April 11 at 10:30 am through Monday, April 14 at 2 pm, and one in the fall. Six overnight closures will be allowed over the course of construction. The bridge will fully reopen by November 15 though finish work may occur in the spring of 2015. ~ Library News ~ Faerie Houses Accepted at Kennebunk Free Library KENNEBUNK Crocuses are blooming outside the Kennebunk Free Library, meaning the awakening of the faeries is close at hand. Kennebunk Free Library will once again host an exhibition of Faerie Houses in anticipation of the May Day Faerie Festival. Faerie houses will be accepted for display from April 22-30. Houses will remain on display until Sat. May 10. Now is the time to be gathering downed branches, bark and seashells for building Faerie Houses. Remember to use only
fallen materials; faeries rebel if you damage living plants! Houses should be on a base no larger than 14” x 14,” and constructed with natural materials, as faeries are allergic to plastic. Because the houses are displayed on top of book shelves, the maximum height should only be 30 inches. If you need building materials, stop by the Library Children’s Room. Members of the Seacoast Garden Club will offer a selection of pine cones, bark and sea shells for children to use in construction. All members of the com-

The public is invited. Carey, a native of England and from a family background of gardens, graduated summa cum laude from Temple University Ambler with a degree in horticulture. The $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a student following an essay competition and interview session. Students are eligible to apply if they are residents of York, Kittery, Eliot or South Berwick who have or will graduate in the current year of the scholarship. Students must graduate from York High School, Traip Academy, Marshwood High School, Berwick Academy or accredited home school studies and they must be accepted into a post high school program of study. The essay question asks students to demonstrate their writing ability by providing a two-page essay on what has happened in their community in the past year. The essay is due May 1, 2014. The Review Committee will be comprised of Russ Peterson from RA Peterson, Holly Roberts (chamber executive director) and three members of the chamber’s board of directors. The committee will be reviewing the essays and select five finalists for interviews. The interviews will be held between May 7 and May 21. The committee will select a scholarship recipient following those interviews. To apply, students can contact their high school guidance counselor or the chamber of commerce. NORTH BERWICK The North Berwick Historical Society celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on March 20 with a Celtic Musical Concert benefit featuring the group Mosaic who presented Scottish/Irish music with information about the context in which it was composed. Brief poetry selections by Robert Burns and William Butler Yeats were also interspersed. The Uilleann pipes, bodhran, guitar, and low whistle were featured. Musical selections included; “How Are Things in Glocca Morra ?”, “Wild Mountain Thyme”, “Danny Boy”, “Scarborough Faire”, “Old John Barleycorn”, “Cockles and Mussels” and the “Fields of Athenry” and others. Also delightful and amusing was the rendition of “Frog In A Cocked Hat” an ancient Celtic Nursery rhyme which we may know as “A Frog He Would A’ Wooing Go”
The evening ended with the singing of an Irish Blessing and delicious refreshments. Benefits will be used for repair

Colizzi caught the eye of some in the industry after recording his first LP in Los Angeles and all recommended that he move to Nashville to continue his very promising country music career. This will be a special event for Colizzi as he will be signing a contract with his new Manager

Oh Say Can You Sing? Aladdin Jr.’s cast of fortyeight 5th graders and thirty-five 4th and 5th grade chorus members have spent countless hours rehearsing lines and music, while twenty backstage hands, also comprised of 4th and 5th graders, have helped Aladdin Jr.’s Art Director Cindy Moloney create backdrops, props and scenery to bring the magical world of to the Great Works Gymnasium. This fantastic tale of the street rat who became a prince will include all of your favorite characters from the hit Disney film. Aladdin, Jasmine, Iago, Jafar, the Genie and many more will amaze and entertain in this musical adventure filled with magic, mayhem and flying carpet rides. 5th Grade teacher and Aladdin Jr. director Pam Star-

KITTERY “Big Easy Roots & Gospel Fest,” a concert, silent auction, and reception, will celebrate ProjectMusicWorks’ 10th anniversary on April 13 with some sensational sounds at the Kittery Community Center in Kittery. ProjectMusicWorks is a local nonprofit dedicated to uplifting those in need through music. The event will feature The
Soggy Po’ Boys, a New Orleans band specializing in traditional Dixieland and Second Line style music; The RMS Five, a group that showcases rich vocal blends and soul-stirring harmonies of Americana and gospel; and Rock My Soul, a critically acclaimed, 35-member secular gospel choir that specializes in roots-based, “raise the rafters” gospel music. “Ugly Duckling Princess” Comedy A Group Effort KENNEBUNK School Around Us offers a dynamic and exciting theatre program every Spring. Children work together with the teachers to develop a full scale production that is open to the public. A comedy production called “The Ugly Duckling Princess” will have performances at The Brick Store Museum Program Center (Dane Street) in Kennebunk on April 18 at 7 pm and April 19 at 2 pm. Children learn much more than their lines through the theatre unit at School Around Us. The annual tradition of producing a play is something
the students look forward to with excitement each year, and this excitement feeds their desire to learn. Students are immersed for six weeks in the theatre arts, and through this exploration they actively gain skills in literacy, team building, self-confidence, performance arts, motivation, and commitment. The students choose the play they want to produce through the process of consensus. The teachers hold auditions, cast the play and then hit the ground running. Parents support the play by making costumes, finding or creating

company, Dorrance Dance, originating the lead role in “the Rag” and “the Machine.” He has also performed with Billy Siegenfeld’s Jump Rhythm Jazz Project and Lisa LaTouche’s Tap Phonics. You may have seen him on “So You Think You Can Dance” or read one of his articles for CNN.com, Dance Studio Life, Dance Spirit or Dance Teacher. His work has been presented at such venues as the Massachusetts Dance Festival, Dance for Life Boston and the Dance for World Community Festival. An NYU graduate, Casey currently choreographs for the University of Connecticut Tap Team. He is also the creator and choreographer of an original

Brick Store Museum Adds Kennebunkport Artist Work to further narrate the story of our area in splendid color and beautiful scenery. His work is important because it was created here. Fine art and every day artifacts help tell the story of our past while allowing us to translate their meanings in the modern day – which is the goal of any museum.” Norton became a popular figure in Kennebunkport. Born in Ashuelot, N.H. in 1868, he studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and in 1890 traveled to Paris to study at the Academie Julian. Like many artists of his generation, he made a living doing portraits and providing illustrations to magazines and other
publications. After a trip to Kennebunkport in 1906 Norton became enamored with the area and two years later had taken up residence at Turbat’s Creek. The artist painted the landscape and action around him in unique pastels. Through his work visitors can experience life in a small seaside town as it was in its shipyards, fish houses and homes at the turn of the 20th century. KENNEBUNK The Brick Store Museum announces the exhibition of six new paintings by noted Kennebunkport artist, Louis Doyle Norton, which opened March 25. The paintings were purchased this past February at auction and serve to strengthen the museum’s already considerable collection of Norton’s locally produced work. The new purchases will be exhibited alongside several paintings already owned by the museum. The exhibit illustrates the important role Norton’s art plays in the Brick Store Museum’s mission to collect artwork of historical and aesthetic significance. “Norton’s works capture some of the most cherished Kennebunkport natural landmarks,” said Brick Store Museum executive director, Cynthia Walker. “Acquiring these paintings allows us

She and her colony were fortunately noticed by the Beals, an animal-loving couple who saw many hungry feral cats visiting their property and scrounging food from a restaurant’s dumpster. The Beals wanted a compassionate solution to rescuing the feral colony, so they contacted Safe Haven. Our expert trappers Grace and Eleanor worked with the Beals, monitoring the humane traps. It was a big colony but finally all were relocated into our program. Living under the same roof with domestic cats at our adoption center, the ferals eventually became more socialized. They

Like many of the colony, Ditto has a distinct white tip at the end of her lovely tail. She’s now friendly and approachable but still fears strangers and being held. Our adoption center has become her home, and we her colony. A couple years ago, at the vets for her annual vaccinations, Ditto sprung out of her carrier, climbed the walls and leaped right through a ceiling tile! She hid in their walls for a day and a half! They eventually had to drill open the wall to remove her. She now receives 3 year vaccinations so we don’t have to endure vet visits very often! Ditto’s made many friends over the years. While certain shortcuts can make daily life more manageable, families sometimes pay too steep a price in their efforts to save time. Such is the case at the dinner table, where nutrition is often sacrificed at the expense of convenience. But quick and easy meals need not be void of nutrition and flavor. North Americans have increasingly turned to fast food, convenience items and dining out as an alternative to home cooked meals. However, such processed foods are often unhealthy. According to the book, “Eat It to Beat It!” by David Zinczenko, the average restaurant meal contains 58 grams of fat, or about 90 percent of the recommended daily fat intake for an average person. What’s more, 70 percent of the average American’s caloric intake is derived solely from processed foods. Moderation plays a crucial role when crafting a healthy diet. Families can enjoy the occasional meal out provided they are careful about what they eat during other times of the week or month. Time-pressed families
can employ a few strategies to help them eat better by enjoying more home-cooked meals. Make a list of favorite family meals. Start by thinking about what foods the entire household enjoys. Create a mealplanning schedule so that you can purchase all of the ingredients at once for the week so you aren’t making any timeconsuming last-minute trips to the store. Shop off-peak hours. Visit the supermarket during off-peak hours, such as early morning or late at night. Avoid Sunday afternoons when stores are often crowded. Shopping during off-peak hours can save you time. Separate bulk purchases into smaller portions. Take the time to divide larger packages of meat or produce into smaller portions more appropriate for the family. Those with diabetes may complain of certain oral symptoms. Uncontrolled diabetes can result in a decrease in saliva flow, which leads to dry mouth. Saliva is important to wash away bacteria in the mouth. Gum inflammation can occur because diabetes causes blood vessels to thicken, slowing the flow of waste and nutrients from bodily tissues. An increase in bacteria and the compromised state of white blood cells makes for the perfect environment for periodontal disease. Furthermore, uncontrolled diabetes can make it more difficult for the mouth and other areas of the body to heal. Therefore, there may be recurrent mouth infections, sores and other symptoms of irritation. Thrush, a condition of overabundant yeast in the body that can cause white patches and soreness in the mouth, is also more prevalent among diabetics. The American Diabetes Association says that not only are people with diabetes more susceptible to serious gum disease, but serious gum disease may have the potential to affect blood glucose control and contribute to the progression of diabetes. Many people are unaware they have diabetes until an oral health exam raises a red flag that warns of uncontrolled blood sugar. Those who are aware of their diabetes should take treatment seriously to keep blood sugar levels in check. They also should discuss their diabetes with a dentist and other oral health practitioners so that a custom exam and screening schedule can be implemented. Prepare for Health Care Costs During Retirement As you save and invest for retirement, what are your ultimate goals? Do you plan on traveling the world? Purchasing a vacation home? Pursuing your hobbies? People often think and plan for these costs. Yet, too often, many of us overlook what potentially could be a major expense during our retirement years: health care. By preparing for these costs, you can help yourself enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Many of us may ignore the impact of health care costs because we just assume Medicare will pay for everything. But that’s not the case. In estimating health care costs during retirement, you may find that $4,000 to $6,000 per year per person for traditional medical expenses is a good starting point, although the amount varies by individual. Furthermore, this figure does not include the costs of longterm care, which can be considerable. To illustrate: The national average for home health aide services is nearly $45,000 per year, and a private room in a nursing home is nearly $84,000 per year, according to a recent survey by Genworth, a financial security company. So what can you do to help cope with these costs?
Here are a few suggestions: Estimate your costs. Try to estimate what your out-of-pocket health care costs might be, based on your health, your age at retirement, whatever supplemental insurance you may carry and other factors. Know the key dates. Things can change in your life, but try to identify, as closely as possible, the age at which you plan to retire. This will help you spot any coverage gaps before you become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Also, be aware of the seven-month window for enrolling in Medicare, beginning three months before your 65th birthday. Review your insurance options. Medicare-approved insurance companies offer some other parts to Medicare, including Part D, which covers prescription drugs; Medigap, which covers gaps in Parts A and B (in-hospital expenses, doctor services, outpatient care and some preventive services); and Part C (also known as Medicare Advantage, which is designed to replace Parts A, B, Medigap and, potentially, part D). You have several options for Part D, Medigap and Medicare Advantage, each with varying coverage and costs, so choose the plans

AUGUSTA Film production in Maine took quite a leap in 2013. The Maine Film Office certified a total of sixteen productions, unleashing more than $4.7 million in direct spending by various companies here in Maine. That figure is a significant improvement over 2012, in which there were eight certified productions and $1.5 million spent in Maine. “The curtains have closed on a tremendous year for the Maine Film Office,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “The whole state benefits from a robust film industry. We welcome more film and television production in Maine as the curtain rises on 2014. When more productions arrive to do business, more Mainers are put to work as a result of their investments.” “I give a great deal of credit for our industry growth in 2013 to the efforts of our Film Office Director Karen Carberry Warhola who has been a force for us since she arrived in July of 2012,” said Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) Commissioner George Gervais. In addition to solid leadership in its Film Office, Maine’s film incentives play a pivotal role in attracting interest from film and television producers and enable the state to remain competitive in the industry. “Maine’s production incentives help generate a solid return on
investment,” said Karen Carberry Warhola. “In 2013 the direct spend of the productions in Maine was $33.23 for every $1.00 paid out in the program.” Better still; that per-dollar return on investment will increase when taxes paid by the productions are deducted from the cost of the program. The Maine Film Office is proactively working to market and promote the growth of the production industry, and has undertaken a variety of new initiatives to showcase Maine as a prime location. Those efforts include: updates to the Maine Film Office website, making it easier for producers to find locations; talented crew listings; local businesses that can supply needed goods and services; and, film-friendly communities. The Office also meets regularly with filmmakers, reads scripts, and attends film industry trade shows, local and national film festivals, screenings, and industry events. The Maine Film Office is part of the Maine Office of Tourism within the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD). Film, television and commercial production companies spending at least $75,000 in Maine may qualify for the Maine Visual Media Incentive Plan. The incentives are a mix of various rebates and credits.

Berwick Academy Boys’ Lacrosse SOUTH BERWICK -
The Berwick Academy (0-1) Boys’ Lacrosse team traveled to Brookline, Mass. on Wednesday, April 2, to open their 2014 spring season. They played the reigning New England Small School Lacrosse Champions, Dexter School (1-0). The Bulldogs were overmatched and lost the game 13-1. The Berwick goalie, junior Peter Shaw, played well recording 14 saves in his first start after transferring from Deerfield Academy. The lone Berwick goal was scored by senior Stephen Sherbahn unassisted. Berwick Academy (0-2) played their home opener on Saturday, April 5, against a strong Groton School (2-0) squad. The teams played evenly in the first quarter with Berwick’s senior Alex Katz scoring 2 goals. The Groton team came out fast in the second quarter and outscored the Bulldogs 6-1. Junior Lucas Michaud had a successful day winning 11 face-offs and scoring 1 goal and 1 assist. The second half saw Berwick score 3 goals in the fourth quarter to make a small come back, but came up short. The final score was 13-6. Junior Chan Ashburner, senior Zach Flinkstram, and senior Colin Gaynor all scored single tallies to round out the Berwick scoring. Berwick is back in action on Wednesday, April 9 as they travel to Plymouth, NH to take on Holderness School

The nex t game is at Hyde School on Friday, April 11. On April 6, Berwick Academy Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse beat Brewster in a nail-biting scrimmage, and then traveled up to Kent’s Hill, Maine, to face Kent’s Hill School. BA shut out their offense in the second half, with the halftime score at 12-6. They beat Kent’s Hill 20-6. BA’s record is now 2-1 and Kent’s Hill is 0-1. High scorers were Lyndsay Brattan with 3 goals, Tatiana Bradley with 3 goals and 1 assist, Natasia with 5 goals and 1 assist, and Shannon Farrell with 1 goals and 3 assists. The Berwick Academy girls opened their softball season on Sunday, April 6, in Portsmouth, RI with an impressive 18-1 win over Portsmouth Abbey. Berwick is 1-0 on the season, while Abbey is 1-2.
Three Berwick pitchers (Freshman Layne Patry, Senior Suzanna Borg and Junior Taylor Lyman) held Por tsmouth Abbey to 1 run and 1 hit on the day. Offensively, nearly every member of the Berwick team contributed to a constant attack. Taylor Lyman hit 3 run home runs in the second inning. She scored 4 runs on the day and knocked in 4 others. Five Berwick hitters sophomore Christina Grassie, Taylor Lyman, senior Sammi Marden, sophomore Abby Moore, and freshman Grace Knowles, collected two hits on the day. Berwick is next in action on Wednesday, April 9, at Hebron in a non-league game.

Dear Computer lady, I have just had my first and hopefully my last bout with “The Blue Screen of Death.” I have windows 8.1 on an HP desktop. The tech that got me back working again, feels that the AVG program I was running was responsible. I have been using AVG anti virus programs on three different computers for at least 5 years or so and haven’t had any problems. I would appreciate your take. He recommended Avira anti virus. Look forward to your weekly columns. Tom Dear Tom, It seems like, tech support people like to blame antivirus programs for a lot of computer issues, but most of the time, this is just not the case, no matter what anti-
virus program you use. It is probably not the antivirus program in your case either, since a BSOD (blue screen of death) is almost always the result of a hardware or driver issue. If it happens again, take your computer to a local shop and get some diagnostics done. It could be anything from a bad RAM stick to a corrupt video driver. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have started getting these messages-pop-ups that I need to download an updated version of a media player. When I do it just brings all kinds of problems. I am using IE 7/ What is trying to download is FLV Media Player Version1.3. Is this something I need? If not, how do I keep it from coming up all the time? I have downloaded it twice then uninstalling it be-

Connie Dear Connie, I had not heard of FLV Media player, but with a little bit of research, I discovered that it is a media player that plays .flv files that have been downloaded from YouTube. If you don’t have files that you downloaded from YouTube, then you don’t need the FLV media player. This is to protect the computer from static electricity, which can destroy sensitive electronics. Even dusting can generate static electricity. Before you clean the computer, turn it completely off, and unplug it. If it is a laptop, unplug it and remove the battery. Now it is safe to clean your computer. You can dust it with a damp rag, blow the dust off with
some compressed air, or use a cleaning wipe made for computers. Don’t use a vacuum to clean your computer, since a vacuum cleaner generates static electricity. This will not only solve the problem of having your computer go to sleep when you don’t want it to, but also protect your computer from electrostatic damage. So they said they had a partnership with Advanced Tech Support and I turned over the computer to them and for $250 they fixed everything. However I was told to call a number and the gal said we needed Malware protection which started at $500 until I yelled and came down to another $250. We have no idea if that is really necessary for two old people who only use online for email and to surf the net (also buying). Thank you for your wonderful column and help. Sincerely, Carol Dear Carol, I hear stories like this every week, in fact, I had a computer in my shop last week with the same type of story, the owner contacted what they thought was Gmail tech support, was told that the
computer was full of viruses, and wanted $250 to clean it up. When I took a look at the computer, the only malware on it was the program installed by the online tech support company. The truth is, you probably were not talking to the Panda company, (did you search for the tech support number online?) but some online scammer. You were probably not infected with anything either. They were just trying to scare you into thinking that. I sell great malware protection here for under $30, I have never seen anti-malware software that costs hundreds of dollars for one computer.
