A journey of a thousand miles… They say that a journey of a thousand miles (which is about three trips from Nairobi to Mombasa for perspective) starts with one step, but no one mentions how big of a step you have to make to make that journey on time. Anyway, we are not here to focus on miles and timelines but to shine a light on a rather big achievement, The Gadgets Africa magazine. In a world dominated by lifestyle and food magazines, we decided to be the black sheep of the family. Not literally but figuratively speaking. We have embarked on a journey that, to be honest, hasn’t been easy. We didn’t know that working on an actual magazine would require so much effort. Of course, we are used to writing, we do run the fastest growing consumer tech website in Kenya but writing is only a tip of the iceberg. Before we get carried away and find ourselves deep into the turbulances of publishing a magazine, I would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation to everyone who worked really hard, from the internal team to strangers on the streets who gave feedback. This is our first step and we welcome you to take the journey with us (I apologize for sounding too official). The shorter version of this rather short introduction is simple, this is Gadgets Africa and we are here to tell tomorrow’s stories, today!

Your Phone Is Listening To You But Not in The Way You’d Think It Is P A G E

ou have probably experienced a scenario where you and your friends talk about something and then when you log in to your favorite social media platforms, there are ads popping up around what you were talking about. To give you an example, you could be talking about going on holiday to Mombasa and boom, Facebook or Instagram starts showing you ads about hotels in Mombasa, even creepier, you start seeing similar ads on websites you visit. First, I’d like to tell you that you’re not crazy and you’re not alone. There are millions of other people in the world that have experienced the same thing and the general conclusion is that our phones must be listening to us.

But are they? You may have heard of this theory before or it’s absolutely new to you, but the bottom line is, yes, our phones are sort-of, kinda, listening to us but not in the way we think. The theory is that smartphones use the microphone to listen in to our conversations and pick certain keywords, keywords that will be used by tech giants such as Facebook and Google to serve us relevant ads that we are likely to click on – which results in them getting money. It all sounds true and probable until I tell you that its actually not. Researchers have not yet found any evidence of big tech companies actually listening in to conversations through your phone’s mic. For instance, Wandera – a Cybersecurity firm based in the U.S., carried out a test with four smartphones, two identical iPhones and two identical Samsung devices. They put two devices, of each type, on mute and the other two were subjected to a constant keyword for multiple days consecutively. Wandera then examined the data coming from these devices and they could not find any evidence of audio data being sent back to big tech corporates. Their conclusion? Big tech companies are not listening to conversations and other Cybersecurity analysts echo this message.

It’s hard to work with Voice data It’s hard but not impossible. Working with voice data requires a lot of processing power – which these tech giants probably have at their disposal. Through voice alone, it is easy to determine the age of a person, their accent and even their gender. However, when it comes to mapping that voice data to a particular person, more data points are required. Things get even more complicated when there are multiple voices speaking at the same time, let’s say like when you’re in a public place. How does your phone determine you are the one speaking? Of course there are other ways to go about it, for instance, there’s a service known as Alphonso that uses the microphone on your phone to listen to what adverts you’re watching on TV to help advertisers offer you the same ads on social media but the company categorically states that they don’t listen to conversations (if we believe them).

But we’re still being stalked Back to big tech, security analysts, point out that these big tech companies are not using the microphone to listen in to conversations and that is because they don’t need to. Don’t be scared but these tech companies already know so much about us through information that we’ve given freely to them that they don’t need to deal with the hustle of listening in to your conversations to determine what you’re talking about and then use this information to serve us ads. For instance, Facebook knows how we look like thanks to the images we post on their platforms (including Instagram), who our friends are, things we like, we give our location data to all these social media apps we use and then there’s the usual tracking through browsing habits.

Advertisements are shown using a number of data points, some of them being what we’ve mentioned above. For those who think that having your GPS off on your phone will help reduce this tracking, sorry to report that technology now allows location tracking through your phone’s network. So why do we notice certain ads only after we’ve spoken about them? The explanation given is that we’ve probably come across these ads before but failed to notice them. But because we’ve now been introduced to the topic, we seem to notice the ads. The whole thing sounds rather creepy but the evidence produced seems to suggest that, as much as there’s ad tracking, no voice data is being used for this purpose, yet. The ads you see are as a result of what tech companies already know about you. So next time you’re talking about your holiday trip and you happen to see these ads pop-up, you know how it happened.

India’s Chandrayaan-2 Failed. But Here’s What Everyone Could Learn From It

P A G E

09

G A D G E T S

A F R I C A

The whole of India and the space nerds all over the world all had their eyes glued to their screens awaiting India’s second mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-2. And just as the living rooms in India were filled with anxiety, ISRO’s control room was even more tense, with the hundreds of staff ready to face the “fifteen minutes of terror”. But just on the brink of making history, the trajectory of the lander on the screen which had been green all along suddenly turned red, signaling the lander had veered off course. In the days and even weeks that followed the world had a lot to say about India’s mission giving too much scientific and mathematical analysis regarding how the space agency failed. Basically, we were all too quick to judge and not draw lessons from the mission as innovators, entrepreneurs, workers and generally as human beings. So here’s what you could learn.

The Journey Starts with The First Step ISRO’s Chandrayaan story was birthed four decades after humans first set foot on the moon’s surface. It might have been a dream way back in 1999, but having taken that first step was what catapulted them constantly to be players in a field that had been dominated only by the world’s superpowers. It then paid off with the success ofChandrayaan-1 which in turn was followed by Chandrayaan-2. The country’s government an the tasked space agency would have seen this as too big of an idea but their strong willpower is one that has gotten them to the world’s history books.

Frugal Innovation: The Mantra of Success Having been built on just a $142 million budget, Chandrayaan-2 did prove to be one of the most economical space missions in history. Innovation does not depend on the amount of money you can get.

Failure Is Never the End Chandrayaan-2 had faced setbacks ever since its commission in 2008, and after the hard landing, ISRO’s resilience and fortitude got them to begin efforts in restoring communication. But even after that, the agency is using the orbiter to collect data and is already planning on its third mission. Instead of just giving in and throwing away the project as a failure since 2008, ISRO is still set to get Chandrayaan-2 as a motivating factor for future missions.

Here’s Why You Could Soon Require a License To Start a WhatsApp Group In an effort to control and regulate social media platforms in the country, administrators in Kenya have proposed a bill that seeks to compel Facebook group admins, WhatsApp group admins and Bloggers to have a license from the Communications Authority of Kenya. Tabled by Maluva Member of Parliament, Malulu Injendi, The Kenya Information and Communication (Amendment) Bill 2019 seeks to put some control over social media platforms. The Bill specifically targets group admins, who will be used to police the kind of content shared in the groups. The Bill defines social media platforms to include “online publishing and discussion, media sharing, blogging, social networking, document and data sharing repositories, social media applications, social bookmarking and widgets.” On the licensing part, the Bill’s memorandum of objects and reasons reads; “The new part will introduce new sections to the Act on licensing of social media platforms, sharing of information by a licensed person, creates obligations to social media users, registration of bloggers and seeks to give responsibility to the Communications Authority to develop a bloggers’ code of conduct in consultation with bloggers.” The Communications Authority on its part will keep a registry of all bloggers and develop a code of conduct for bloggers. P A G E

19

Why It Matters This is a huge deal as it means that all group admins on any social platform will be required to get authorization from the C o m m u n i c a ti o n s Authority before they can open such groups. The bill also states that admins should monitor content shared in their groups and remove any member that posts inappropriate content. The admins are also required to ensure all their members are over 18 years old. Group admins will also be required to have a physical address and keep a record of the group members. Failure to meet any of these requirements will lead to up to Kes.200,000 in fines or a maximum of one-year imprisonment. Bloggers have not been left out of the hook as the bill states that anyone running a blog without the C o m m u n i c a ti o n s Authority’s license could land bloggers a fine of up to Kes.500,000 or up to two years in prison.

licence

The Big Question The news of this bill has not been received well as speculations are that the government is trying to censor social media platforms. Even if the bill passes, the government might have an uphill task of monitoring private platforms like WhatsApp. It is not really clear the motivation behind the bill but the big question remains, do you think this bill will be used by the government to monitor citizens? Or do you think it’s a genuine methodology of maintaining sanity and responsibility on social media platforms?

The Psychology behind The Rapid Spread Of Fake News If you have been an ardent user of social media for the last five years, chances are you have come across the phrase ‘Fake News’ and pretty sure understand what it is. The way we consume news today has significantly changed and this has oiled the wheels to allow the smooth spread of false information. The emergence of fake news has caught the attention of policymak ers who have pressured tech giants prompting them to introduce changes to their policies, with Google and Facebook both announcing to be working on changes to prevent 'fake news' websites from using their respective advertising networks. Whereas it has relentlessly been a common sight to point fingers at tech giants, blaming them for allowing fake news to flourish, it should not be completely ignored that we (the users) are also part of the problem. Without knowing it or deliberately doing so, we have been the helm that has orchestrated and spread fake news, giving it the will to thrive.

Why Fake News Spreads Faster than Authentic News While critics, policymakers & activists continue to blame algorithms, social media giants and bots for being solely responsible for the spread of fake news, a study by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology revealed

that Fake news spread faster than true news on Twitter—thanks to people, not bots. People will easily share and spread fake news unknowingly or simply because they are gullible and may gain status by sharing new information. To explain this plainly, they are more likely to accept information that confirms their beliefs and dismiss information that does not.

How to Tell Fake News In order for us to ensure the kind of information we are consuming is legitimate and authentic, we as readers are going to have to always have a third eye to track the good and bad news. Here’s how; The domain name of the website is usually suspicious and this should be a red flag to make the article itself shady. Websites that usually share fake news have unusual domain names like www.bbc.com.co and will always have you mistake them for the official www.bbc.com site if a story is shared. You need to always double check the domain to confirm. Go out of your way and do some

background research on the site before sharing. Fake news articles are usually sensational and characterised with clickbait titles. Always look at the headlines and if they do resonate with the story. Take some time and look for the same piece of information from other credible sources and if there are none, you might want to consider that a fake news article before sharing. To help fight Fake news, there are fact-checkers such as PesaCheck, Africa Check, Snopes and International Fact-checking network that are always fact-checking false information on social media and verifying it. If you have any doubts, you can always check with them. In the words of Winston Wordsworth, a renowned writer on fake news, spreading misinformation and propaganda isn’t a new social phenomenon, however, the rapid evolution of the internet means that it is easier, cheaper and potentially more damaging than ever before. Further, this is not about to change if we can’t change the way we use the internet. We need to understand what fake news is and then we can collectively fight it.

Music Streaming Sites Saving the Music Industry

M

usic is one of the most dynamic forms of communication spanning across the universe. The messages, the lyrics and emotions in a song resonate with millions of people worldwide bringing the world that bit closer together. Thanks to music streaming sites, we are able to listen to global music anywhere and anytime diversifying our music content and creating a huge platform for artists everywhere. Here are a couple of popular music streaming sites you should know about.

1. SoundCloud It is one of the most popular music streaming services in the world. It cuts across the globe as it offers a lot of original content. Apart from the millions of commercial and local hits, SoundCloud offers a space where you can upload your own music and share it with the world. Being a community driven service, it offers a variety of music options and diversity in content.

2. Apple Music This is a paid music streaming service with over 50 million songs in their library available on iOS. The benefits of Apple Music come from the ability to save music in the cloud. You can store up to 100,000 songs and access your personal library across all your devices. This means you can listen to your music wherever you are signed in. It gives you the flexibility to mix songs from your library with new tunes you can stream on demand. P A G E

3. Deezer Deezer is a music streaming site that falls under the radar due to the prominence of Apple music and SoundCloud but works with all desktop apps, iOS and Android devices. It comes in a standard free to use version and a paid one. The paid version removes ads, ups the sound quality and allows you to save your songs for oine listening. It is exible, has a beautiful layout and a fully functional app worth your time.

4. Songa This is an app created by Safaricom with the aim to conquer the music streaming space in Africa. The app launched with about 2 million songs and started o quite well. Despite not having such a wide selection of music, the company says that over 400,000 artistes are listed there creating a huge platform for local artists to advertise their music. The good thing about their collection is that it is diverse and has some international artistes for those who are not big fans of local ones. The app also allows you to download songs and up to now there is no limit to how many you can download. It is even possible to download full albums on this platform. Unfortunately they never released an iOS app causing them to lose a bit of traction in the space.

M

in summary With streaming sites we are able to listen to old tracks and new hits while never missing a beat. The future looks bright for the music streaming sites and artists alike. The ability to share playlists across platforms closes the gap in this global musical connection and opens up the world to more diverse talent. P A G E

Mobile Data Prices Are Falling But When Does it Become an Enabler A U T H O R :

N A Y A N T A R A

J H A

Like food, oxygen and need for love, internet data has entered the category of ‘human needs’. Our ‘new need’ does come along with a price; a price we often do not have metrics to calculate. One way to evaluate is the hard money we need to purchase it, for instance, in Kenya the cheapest 1GB costs us KES.28. The other way to see the cost is to evaluate the ‘opportunity cost’- what else we could do with the time spent on the internet. The second method becomes quite complicated due to subjective variables like life stage, occupation and socio-economic segmentation. So, for the ease of discussion, we restrict our boundaries to data prices. Coming back to the prices in Kenya; the mobile internet usage has seen an increment of 21.4 per cent in the last year. One of the reasons for this steep rise could be attributed to the reduction in data prices, which have become almost half of last year. So, data is becoming affordable, in a nutshell. But, has it become an enabler? To have a perspective on the prices at this point, the price for the cheapest 1GB is KES.2 in India. A considerable magnitude of the success of internet-based businesses in India can be directly correlated to the affordable access to the internet. The largest e-commerce websites in India employs close to 80,000 people and have the capacity to generate 140,000 temporary jobs ahead of the holiday season sale. An edutech

company has become a billion-dollar company in just six years, reaching 15 million students. An online travel aggregator is earning over KES.60 Billion in revenue. A large chunk of success of these internet companies is due to the penetration of physically inaccessible markets by them. What else works for them is reliable and consistent internet access. The high number of transactions and revenues for these companies is also due to a large domestic population. For KES.800, in India once can avail 80Gb per month along with unlimited domestic calling and SMS. Also, the unconsumed data every month can be accumulated up to 200 GB. Now, with this kind of data, one can access educational sites, create new products, talk with people anywhere or stream movies. A straightforward reason for this affordability of data in India is the market forces, where competition has led to consumer benefit. The regulatory authority has constantly been ensuring the customer’s interests are a priority. With a combination of these factors, today in India, internet data has become the cheapest in the world. And this has opened a world of opportunities for the youngsters. Probably, the availability of such an amount of data for all pockets can propel the latent curiosity and talent of the growing young population in Kenya. With the priority to ICT industry under Kenya Vision 2030, hopefully, the data affordability is becoming a reality. When data would become affordable for everyone’s pockets; it would become an enabler rather than just remaining a ‘means’ to fulfil requirements.
