A WORD FROM THE CHAIR Dear Region VI Colleagues, As we are in the final countdown to the regional conference in November, I would first like to thank everyone who took the time and effort to submit a session proposal! The professional development opportunities that diverse, well planned, and thoughtful sessions bring are the heart of the conference, and this wouldn’t be possible without our members, who are the heart of the region. Second, I want to offer a huge shout out of appreciation to our entire leadership team! You can probably imagine the countless hours of work that has all ready gone into planning the conference, and this wouldn’t be possible without significant commitment from our team members. Finally, I feel compelled to offer yet possibly another reminder as our conference will end on Tuesday, November 8th - election day! Many of us believe that this is a critical election that could significantly impact the future of international higher education and I hope you will take the time to vote early. I’m so excited to see you in November! ~Daniel Whitmer NAFSA Region VI Chair

“I Just Have A Quick Question…” (ISSS) This session is designed to discuss the common problem of how to efficiently address student questions, while also freeing up DSO time to deal with more complex and time consuming immigration challenges. We will discuss multiple front desk structures, student scenarios and different approaches to handling requests, as well as challenges different offices experience in trying to meet the high demand of student requests. Time will be reserved at the end of the session for group discussion. Don’t Panic! Assessing Risk Management in Education Abroad (EA) Do you know whom to call when the unexpected happens abroad? What health, safety, security and risk management procedures does your institution currently have in place? Building upon experiences in responding to the terrorist attacks in Brussels, Paris and other international incidents, this presentation aims to share what we learned working with both faculty-led and semester students abroad, reinforcing and exemplifying themes of best practice in health and safety protocols at an institutional level. Come learn what other institutions are doing, share your practices with others, and get feedback on how to improve your risk management procedures. Road Warrior Reversal: Bringing Prospective Students and Counselors to Campus (IEM) In international student recruitment, we travel the world to find qualified applicants, but what about those who happen to travel to us, for one reason or another? When prospective students, parents, or counselors happen to be passing through (or near to) your community, inviting them for a campus visit is an excellent, low-cost recruitment opportunity. This session will include concrete tips on how to identify such potential visitors in your community, engaging current students to help with visits, risk management considerations for minors on campus, and other suggestions for a successful visit. Crash and Burn: Pot, Booze, Students and Scholars (ISSS) Discussion of issues facing students and scholars who consume and/or abuse alcohol and marijuana, and related criminal problems. Emphasis on current issues such as visa revocation, advising in the era of legalization of recreational and medicinal marijuana, effects on status of substance-related criminal behavior, recent changes in consular procedures, and readmission to the US after international travel. Three perspectives are brought to bear, from a DSO, scholar advisor, and attorney.
J U S T F O R N E W B I E S T E N TAT I V E In addition to the general conference schedule, there are a S C H E D U L E number of events and opportunities that are aimed specifically at our newcomers. Please plan to take advantage of the following:
NEWCOMER RECEPTION Sunday, Nov. 6 5:00 - 5:45 This reception precedes the Opening Reception and allows you to get the conference started right: we’ll have a short overview of NAFSA and its resources, introductions to the leadership team and to this year’s group of mentors, and of course networking. CASE STUDY CONUNDRUM Sunday, Nov. 6 5:45 - 6:15 Region VI provides a unique and fun opportunity for new professionals to test their mettle: the Case Study Conundrum. Join a team to work out a comprehensive response to a challenging case study. Teams may consult with volunteer mentors throughout the conference, and will ultimately present their analysis to a panel of judges. This short meeting will introduce the mentors, judges, this year’s case study, and will identify the teams. Don’t miss this opportunity to show your expertise! To learn more and to sign up for the Case Study, email Cindy Jiang at jiang.533@ osu.edu. The winning team will receive free registration for the 2016 regional conference. KNOWLEDGE COMMUNITY MENTORS NAFSAns tend to be a lovely and collegial bunch, but this year a number of volunteers have stepped forward to act more overtly as mentors to the participants in the Case Study Conundrum and generally to newcomers in the field. These volunteers can be identified by a MENTOR ribbon and will be introduced at the receptions mentioned above. ACADEMY FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Is the Academy right for you? The regional conference is an excellent way for you to learn more about this year-long professional development opportunity: meet the coach and past Academy trainees, and find out more about the benefits of joining a cohort. Applications for the next cycle are due December 2, 2016, so come ready to find out more!
