[Soul of Pyramids] Janurary 2017

Soul in Pyramids is a research and design project investigating a macro sense of cultural building or cultural installation which has reconfigurability, adaptability and reaction ability with on the premise of negotiation with people and city’s infrastructure. By regarding the units as part of city’s infrastructure system, this project explores arguments and strategies of how these units’ features are able to provide people with an equal relationship with culture and others. Combination and transformation are keys to mobility and variations. This project addresses decentralization and dematerialization of conventional museums/galleries give equal chance to all to get access to art collections without curators. Thus, art is delivered to, but not superior to people via our mutual selection workflow.

This project focuses on two parallel paradigms of researches and design. The foundational part of the research is to search for deformed cubes’ and pyramids’ geometrical configurations and features with their mobility and choreography strategies. We choose a solid cube as the basic geometry. By dividing it into 6 pyramids, we are able to categorize all 11 ways of hinge distribution to add a higher layer of mobility and combination opportunity. By rotation all hinges following a certain orientation, 6 pyramids can be formed as a perfect cube or dodecahedron. In-between these two shapes, we have uncountable possibilities of shapes. To describe and categorize them, we sequence their hinges, use orientation and degree code to describe how a certain shape is achieved; we also give them projection, intervention and absorption values to describe each shape’s characteristics in terms of extension and connection ability. A further study is about horizontal and vertical mobility. A cube has its local horizontal mobility by folding and unfolding itself following different hinge sequences and orientations. Its horizontal mobility can also be extended by an adjacent cube’s folding and unfolding. Its vertical mobility is achieved by its climbing behavior or being picked up by another cube. Studies of this part, which supports our idea of decentralization of museums/galleries, enables a new way of exhibition space creation and reconfiguration. The other part of research focuses on the concept of delivering exhibition as part of city’s infrastructure. A pyramid is a perfect carrier to exhibit visual art collections as it has hologram features. In a hologram projection, which gives flexibility to both art collections and people regardless of location and weight, an art collection is repeatable and scalable. Using hologram, we aim to make the cubes accessible and distributed to people with exhibitions that are interested in. A decision-making workflow negotiating people, cubes and city is designed. Cubes, being car-like self-aware traffic elements, are distributed to places and show visual collections due to users’ choice on their phone applications.

Cubium-Decoding _ Transformation Basics Combination, Hinge & Rotation
Combining 6 pyramids with 5 hinges, a cube or a dodecahedron is formed by totating the hinges following different orientations.
In order to make our research more systematic, we number the hinges of all the 11 unfolding ways. From 1 to 5 in each of them, and all the rotations will follow this order.
The torque of hinge that triggers all the possible forms. There are only 3 ways of rotation. We define it a positive 90 degrees rotation if the cusp of a pyramid goes toward the cusp of another one. In the other way around, we define it a negative 90 degrees or negative 180 degrees rotation.

Also we introduce colors to show the valence of each pyramid. In our color system, black color represents the terminal pyramid; yellow one means that it has only 1 terminal pyramid; red one means that it connects with 2 terminal pyramids; green one means that it connects with 3 terminal pyramids; grey one means that it just a normal connection pyramid. The color system describes the relationship and valence, so even the same folded form could contain different meanings because the valences of pyramids are different. This color identification may have great potential in our further research.

In general, all the possible forms generated by the transformation process can be defined in 3 states: the initial state, the procedural state and stationary state. All the states can be described as the total number of hinges that experience rotation and each hinge can be rotated once only. For procedual and stationary states, there are regular and freeform states to distinguish whether the hinge rotations followed regular degrees as show in the previous page.

In order to evaluate the feature of each shape and count the number of geometrically different shapes, we introduce the value which that can intuitively describe a shape in 3 aspects.

I stands for intervention, it is the number of the pyramid’s cusps standing out in the shape and describes chances of a shape to insert to another void.

After single units, we did researches on units’ combinations. The rule of combination is a cusp of one unit plugging into a void of another unit. Thus, the new PIA value is calculated regarding to the expression New PIA = P1+P2-1, I1+I2-1, A1+A2-1. The database which guides all behaviors computationally is composed of transformation code, PIA value and the expression below. This database is the geometricall and mathematical basis of our further coded interaction research.

A cube has its own local mobility. This means that it can go to any its pyramids' position when it unfolds.

Decentralization - "Infrustructure" Transportation Living in a city, it is unarguable that roads, which transports matters to everywhere, are blood vessels of a city. The road system’s incomparable accessibility is what city infrastructure relies on. Another infrastructure meaningful to city life is public spaces where people gather together for reasons (public events, leisure, etc.). Both roads and public squares support our argument of making the cubes operate as part of city life and providing as much accessibility as possible. To achieve this goal, it is inevitable to link our cubes to city, more specifically, roads and public squares. Therefore, the cubes are meant to be transported among squares via roads. Like selfdriving cars, they drive themselves to the distributed squares which are determined by center console according to people’s demands collected.

Decentralization - "Infrustructure" On-site Interaction On-site interactions here in our project mean short-distance real-time visitors’ and units’ mutual movements and transformations without a central console being a transmitter or decision-maker involved. The censors installed in the pyramids get visitor(s) motions. There are two types of movements units perform. When the unit senses that visitor(s) are moving parallel to it, a following movement will be executed. When a single unit or multiple units sense that there are visitors walking towards them, pass-over ways will be created to make an enclosed yet open space for visitors.

Decentralization - "Infrustructure" Off-site Interaction (Simulation built with Unity3D+C#) After setting up, the city is generated with cubes distributed to squares and roads. This game allows the user to have a bird view of the city generated. To have a better impression of the city, the user can also have a closer view of cubes distributed. In this case, we can see there are more cubes on a big square and less on two small squares. Moreover, one cube which is coded as part of the city's traffic AI system is running in the street.

To start with, the first thing that the user wants to do is opening the APP. A city map with the user's location centered is shown on the screen. Once the user hit "Explore Near Me", the APP pops up the information of nearest squares as well as cube information of each square (the amount on-site and on the way). We try to investigate the geometry transformation of the voxels that create new behaviors under certain circumstances other than live and death in original John Conwy's Game of Life while maitaining the most porous and most dense state.

Rule Settings We try to move on from 2 dimensional into 3 dimensional with the same logic that if the density is too dense the voxels will transform or die. In the 3 dimensional (2 dimensional stacking) version, we try to incorporate another layer of game of life rule. In our game of life, the age count will count both alive and death cells, if death cells died for certain period of time and surrounded by certain neighbors, it will become alive again. These newly born cells in this distinct condition will also transform themselves into another shape, so that, this newly born from this special condition will clearly recognize in the overall stacking mass.
2 Dimentional Iteration Research Our project starts by investigating the certain condition that if the neighbors of each voxels are too high, what will happen? Our hypothesis is that the voxels will either die or transform itself into another form in order to avoid overcrowded, while maintaining the highest density possible. By comparing changing in only color and the 2D shrinking of the shape in this chapter, it clearly shown that the higher the density (neighbors) of voxels are the smaller the size of their shape. By transforming their behavior the grids retain the high density without overcrowded.

These studies all start with a simple plane that is positioned multiple times in space, in an organised and controlled manner. The initial studies consist of two dimensional arrays that are later connected to each other to form a continuous object. Gradually, the studies became more complex and the organisation three dimensional. The forms that were of interest to us were developed further and underwent a smoothing process.

Articulations One of the main design choices we had to make was whether to contain all the joints in the cental part of the objects and create an “inner circle� or wether to spread them out and allow them to create a second layer that would run through the whole object. We decided that the second option was preferable, since it looked more continuous and at the same time would be more structurally sound and would promote further the assembling qualities of the object.

Co-existing Loops The object is constructed by two co-existing systems - the white and the red. The white parts are the main parts of the object, the ones that form the branches and hold each branch together. The red parts grip the white parts and exist exclusively in relation to the them. However, the red parts connect the different branches, so without them, the object would not operate as a single piece but as four, identical, independent systems. The reason why these two systems were designed in such a fashion is that we aimed to achieve continuity and assembly not only as visual effects but as part of the essence and the structure of the object.

3D Printing Test In order to answer to the brief, all the individual pieces had to fit in the volume of the 3d printer. The printers we used were ultimaker 2, ultimaker 2+ and ultimaker 3, all with the same capacity: 203*254*203 mm. Taking this restriction into account, we calculated the maximum size that our physical model could have. The result was a physical model with a diameter of 420mm, which is a more than twice the size of the 3d printer.

This project aimed on strategies for human use which is quite different from an normal way of using a library. The building we designed is a university library located in Guangzhou, a subtropical coast, with a marine subtropical monsoon climate. According to the feature of the local climate and the function of library, we propose a prototype and a form to realize the concept - "daily reading rooms".

SITE PLAN
THE LOCATION AND CLIMATE This project is located in the city of Guangzhou, which is one of the most developed metropolises in China. Guangzhou is situated in the very south part of China, by the South China Sea, with a marine subtropical monsoon climate. Generally speaking, it comes very hot and wet in its long summer and clamminess in winter. According to the feature of the climate here, we made a system mentioned in P11 and P12 to promote ventilation as well as dehumidification using the natural monsoon, namely southeast wind in summer and northwest wind in winter.
LIFE-STYLE IN GUANGZHOU Morning tea is a Cantonese tradition. People come to a teahouse in the morning to read or chat while enjoying tea and snacks and leave around dusk. Living in the old streets, residents meet all needs within 100m. Guangzhou is a city of living. Reanding is an vital habit in daily life.

PROBLEMS IN AN ORDINARY LIBRARY
1. Many extra needs generated during reading can’t be rightfully met. 2. Cramped space between shelves and tables in reading rooms. 3. Separation of reading area and book-storing area. 4. Ineffective corridor spaces and other ambiguous spaces along the shelves.
CONCEPT People always have many other demands other than reading when in a library. We combine these demands with reading and call it “Extended Reading Space”. Reading can become a daily activity via combining these functions together with similar space patterns. The 'L' shaped bookshelves are set around a void centre, forming a modular square room (7.2m*7.2m), in order to provide extra functions in different rooms. Moreover, qualities of different rooms are established by modifying sizes of entrance and combinations of different rooms. People have different feelings when in different rooms because of the d i f fe re n c e s b e t w e e n w a l l s a n d formations. Everyone can find his/her own way of reading in this enjoyable library.

FACADE & VENTILATION SYSTEM DESIGN
Adjustable fibrous mats were used on the terrace of the west elevation in order to protect readers from exposure under sunlight in summer as well as to let students enjoy the sunlight in winter.
According to the mechanism of ventilation and dehumidification of traditional lane space, we designed several courtyards enclosed by a double glass facade with air vent. Air vent serviced as windows around courtyards, meanwhile, there is a piece of absorbent cotton per vent between the facade to reduce the humidity of the air from outside. On the one hand, air in the lanes remains cool whi le air in the cour tyards is heated and then pushed into facade by hot pressure. On the other hand, wind comes into countryards as it blows from southeast in the summer, penetrating the facade and goes through the hole building. Also, we took many other measures to e n h a n c e t h e e f fe c t o f t ra n s ve r s e ventilation, such as increasing aligned outlet on partition walls and placing vertical courtyards at a distance of the corridor alongside.

This project aimed on strategies for both human use and rural plan.This is an all-round design including village plan, residential design, a primary school design and an ancestral hall design. I practiced to explain and elaborate the whole project in a new way which is closer to the modern village life by abstracting the most important points and concepts from the traditional buildings.

BACKGROUND The original village will be flooded due to the construction of a new reservoir. The village will be relocated to an unplanned area which will have a higher altitude than the water level of the reservovoir under construction. Furthermore, since it is a historic village, the local villagers keep a strong concept of family. As a result, the ancestral hall became the most important building in the village. Besides, the village has a small primary school, which is also a place to hold the important public activities. The form of residential houses follows the form shows in this page. Yet most of the houses are unrepaired. Villagers hope to take advantage of the this opportunity to improve the conditions of life.
An entrance square plays the role of a buffer zone and a parking lot. A commercial street, which runs through the village, is the main street. There are three wells in the village to meet the drinking water demand of the whole village.

NEW VILLAGE PLAN I designed three main streets, one of which act as the central axis. Except for transpor tation and communication, ancestor worship activities will also be held on the axis. Wells will not assume the role of providing drinking water. I abstract the well into a symbol and become a place for villagers to communicate.

The problem now is that t h e w o o d h a s f a l l i n to disrepair and dampness. The other problem is the weak light, especially the north part. Living here is not convenient because of the inadequate infrastructure.
The large courtyard was used for old junks and hence wasted space. Now I reduce yard area but increase room space to meet the use requirement of people.
R e s e r ve t h e p a t i o a n d expand it. Using white paint in north patio let light in. With the increasing space patio become the private yard for family. This change can promote communication between family members.

Process of design
The orginal structure is so closed that communication between villagers becomes more difficult and friendly relation between villagers has gone. Low-level living standards here are due to the inadequate infrastructure.
Break the original building structure and increase the contact area between buildings and environment to enhance interaction of people. Adding an entry on the side and then build yards behind the front entry and the side entry.
Build an inside yard to restore the design of patio which increases the dining-space. Landscape the inside yard to create a beautiful private area.

SCHOOL& ANCESTRAL HALL DESIGN Process of planning
1. to achieve the purpose of making the school and ancestral hall the communication centre, set them in the centre of the village
2. put the ancestral hall on the central axis to stress the unique meaning and position
3. develop a new form and set it underground to make its roof available for activities
4. locate the school next to the ancestral hall, while the roof-top of the ancestral hall can be used for pupils' as well as villagers' activities
5. move and refine the blocks to generate courtyards with different atmosphere for pupils and villagers
6. move and dig the blocks to generate two public paths
Spatial distribution for students and villagers Placing the ancestral hall undergound, its surface can be both children's activity and villagers' activity area, becoming the most public area. The school blocks enclose closed or semi closed courtyards as the exclusive area of student activities. When not in class, the playground on the west side of the school works as a public activity area to meet the needs of sports of the villagers. People in the ancestral hall can contact by eyes with people on the ground via patios. Additionally, There are five symbolic wells in the village as a place to communicate with neighbors.

This project aimed on providing residents, guests and passengers with a place to walk through, communicate and rest by using an environmentally friendly way. I incorporated passive and active design principles when I worked on this project. Besides practicing the ability of form constitute, software simulation played an key row in this project.

SITE OVERVIEW This is a historic site in Tianjin, around the typical "Lilong" apartment buildings built last century. With long and narrow residential, regular arrangement, this should be full of rich flavor of life. But now because of the development of urbanization and the reconstruction of roads, this area now is full of chaos and lack of vitality. At the same time, the site is located at the corner of the five fork, which is a large gathering place for vehicles, tourists and residents. In winter and spring, the site is surrounded by a strong wind, especially around the corner. People are not willing to stay there.

BEHAVIOR COLLECTION& SURROUNDINGS This area, which is an old residential area, a historic area of tourist attractions and also an area plays the key role of is functionally complicated. Residents here are mainly elderly, who like to take a walk and talk with the neighbors outside. Moreover, the elderly often take their grandchildren out for some sports and entertainment activities. There are also a large number of tourists traveling between the various attractions, for whom rest, food and beverage is needed except for sightseeing.

IMPROVING WIND ENVIRONMENT VIA FORM OPERATION By using the software simulation and comparison, the building's roof and sunken yard can be suitable for human activities in winter, while the wind around the building maintain a stable state. In the summer, the building can be ventilated by natural wind.

This project is a site convey and investigation, as well as a conceptual design aimed to activate the downtown slums. In order to archieve the purpose, the advantages of this site and even the city of Busan should be properly used. This project is not only a conceptual design, but also a solution to solve urban level issues, such as public transportation and population aging. This project required a broader perspective.

ABOUT THE SITE As the site has existed for a long time in history under circumstance of complex topography, historical events which have influenced it all the time that brought about its unique characteristics but also issues. As the collage at bottom shows, --war refugees, --hillside agriculture, --informality with topography --brilliant view of the port and the city --and lonely residence are the main factors compose the site, they are thorny to handle, but of much possibility to be created.
The project sites in poor hillside villages in Busan, which is the second developed city, biggest port in Korea. The site faces towards Busan station, only 650m away, and has a good view of the port and sea. Plus, it back on a mountain which embodies an ecological garden and agriculture fields.
HISTORICAL MAPS AND PANORAMIC VIEW OF STATUS QUO
It was home of labours who live on port during Japanese colonial perid. Korean war drived people out to Southern part of Korea. It became one of the settlements of war refugees.

Unlicensed working class during the Economic Development Period housing here, made the place more complex, diverse and mess. It was an obstinate place within Busan metropolitan, highly contrast to modern pattern, but still of its characteristics.
ISSUES Fragmentation to the Outside
Vertical Steps Choryang-dong was separated from Busan Station by the city’s main road that cuts across the old downtown area of the city.
Urban Declination
Inside the site, the steep steps which are very inconvenient take on charge of the main traffic
Fragmented Rooftops Squatter settlements in low quality, most for war refugees, it was among the top 40% of declining villages in Korea.
Due to the fragmentation and clutter of the rooftops, the good vision, which the area should have, do not get a good use

The house price around the site is significantly lower than new buildings along the main street.
The whole area around Busan station is suffering from aging, especially the site.

Putting forward the idea of setting Choryang-dong as entrepreneurial incubator base for start-ups with limited financial resources to take advantage of its low house price.
Making use of the abandoned containers, which are relatively cheap and easily obtainable, to repair or replace the damaged houses.

STRATEGY GENERATION By analysing circulation, public space and empty houses of status quo, accessibility to important spots and potential transformation area as the follow diagrams show, strategy of (re)stitching and (re)connecting is proposed.
