PROJECT 1

THE SKI LODGE Studio Work Introductor: Daniel Hoffman

Enjoying Skiing while Entertaining Have you ever imagined watching someone skiiing while sitting and talking something interesting with your friends or family? It sounds kind of exciting, right? The project is aimed at creating such a hybrid space that contains skiing on the roof which can be watching while people have meal, communicate with others indoor or have other entertainment indoor. The afflatus comes from “Mobius Strip , which eventually become the baisc formation of the project through stretching and transformation. It is accessible to ski on the roof or dive from the mountainand buffer on the roof. Also, the skiers could relize the social behaviors inside the building.

Additionally, drainage slope should be taken into consideration.

outdoor The concept comes from the combination of skiing outside and other social behaviors inside the building. Generally speaking, people have to change clothes and go to the skiing lift which takes themto the top of the mountain, then start their skiing trip. But, why not ski on the roof of the building, watching what happens inside the ski lodge and enjoying the cozyatmosphere?

The site is located at an open area of a mountain with uneven gradient. What we need do is building a ski lodge which is supposed to be harmonious with the context. Also, the site, including parking lots, vegetation, skiing areas and activity areas need to be designed.

The following diagrams present a series of data collection of local daylight, wind and thermal condition. We can learn that, the amount of average annual daylight radiation always stay stable.

XIAMEN THEATER A New Prototype for Modern Theater

Second studio - Theater Design Instructor: Hao Zheng, Mar-Jun/2013 Xiamen, China

Project 2

XIAMEN THEATER DESIGN Studio work Instructor: Hao Zheng, Professor

A New Prototype of Modern Theater It is difficult to separate public environment from so called private space in urban setting. Within the site, tha gap between privacy and openness is bridged by a series of platform inside and outside the building, which form a transition from the street environment to public activities. The building occupies a middle region between individul and collective . By analyzing the peripheral stream of people and vehicles, the site planning is acheived. Also, the design breaks the border between foyers and backstage studios, creating a continous route stringing all the functional areas. A vertical lobby is inserted between two auditoriums and visually emphasizes the hidden logic underneath the surface.

The diagram is the analysis of site transportation, and the yellow areas present traffic chaos areas in which the pedestrian circulation interlaces with shuttle bus circulation.

The diagram shows different circulations after site planning which combines the park entrance and theater entrance, and this area is only for pedestrians.

The diagram shows vehicle circulation. All the motor vehicles are only allowed in the north entrance. Vehicles and pedestrians are separated.

The diagram shows people density. The yellow areas present high pedestrian density.

Vegetation plan

The diagram shows the pedestrian flow direction. This design is aimed at guiding people from high dense areas to low dense area. In this case, the efficiency of using this park could be achieved.

SECTION THROUGH AUDITORIUMS

A concession is made between the building and main street so that an angle appears between them.

To guide people walk through the building, a open vertical lobby is inserted in the middle. Also, a platform is plused on each side of the building.

PROJECT 3

THE HIDDEN LOCALS Studio Work: Library in Xiamen University Instructor: Hong Shao, Sept - Nov/2011

Lithesome Space: From forms to Sustainability While strolling through Xiamen, a major port city in southern China, anyone will notice how dense, or certain aspect of dense, countinues to stretch itself over the cityspace. The local residents build a lot of distinct structures, from narrow balconies, small penthouses to micro roof gardens or terraces. And the situation of residental areas in Xiamen University is all the same. The site is located in residental area in Xiamen University. Some dense low-rise buildings are next to the site which is open to the sea in the south. The task is to design a library which should be hamonious with the context. Also, other purpose for using the building should be taken into consideration in case that the library-function is not used any more. The inspiration of the facade comes from the abstract evolution of peripheral residential buildings’ facades.

-1 Space in traditional buildings is small and broken. However, the concept of flowing space, put forward by Mies Van der Rohe, casued an evolution in architecture. And the space could almost meet the needs of function of any different kinds of buildings.

The plan design is based on a rectangle, the space of every floor uses a integrated form in each rectangle. And, the rest continuous small space is used for vertical tranportation.

EVOLUTION OF LIBRARY With the development of information society, the traditional and simple - functional library can not meet the social needs any more. On the contrary, a big and integrated space should be involved. Over the past 50 years, China has transitioned from a society of uniform to a country of what some would describe as socialism market, allowing much great diversity to dwell within -- the growing freedom therefore requires a new design that is able to repair fragmentation and be friendly to any eveyday activities to stay.

PROJECT 4

RENAISSANCE OF OLD URBAN DISTRICT Competition | Personal Transition: From History to Contemporary Era

PROJECT 4

RENAISSANCE OF OLD URBAN DISTRICT Transition: From History to Contemporary Era With the rapid sprawl of urbanization in China, the uneven development of city caused an antiquated area which reflects the history of a city and breaks away from the city. The old urban district, which is the crystallization of the culture of a city, carries a city’s history and reflects the development process of a city. Therefore, there is a close relationship between urban vitality and the old urban district. Nowadays, how to prosper the old urban district and stimulate a city’s development has been a extremely important topic.

TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

LOCATION AND TRANSPORTATION

SPACE UTILITY

LANDSCAPE PLANNING

This district is located in Xiamen which is an important part of the coastal economic belt. Xiamen Island has a very convenient transportation system, and it is the center of the whole city. The district is a very special zone, which is just north of Zhongshan Street, a most important part of the city, and south of Xiamen University, a most famous university in China

ELAPSE OF CULTURE This district was safe habor long time ago, and fishing industry and shipbuilidng industry were very prosperous. However, with the sprawl of urbanization, these two industries gradually declined. Many adults go out to do other jobs, leaving the aged be at home. As time goes on, the culture of thehabor is disappearing.

POOR CONDITIONS All the buildings within this district were built in the 1950s. Additionally, all the buildings, which are next to the sea, were repaired by individuals rather than professional renovation. Therefore, the conditions of the buildings are severe. Also, lanes in the district are pretty narrow, which are only accessible to pesdestrians.

TOPOGRAPHY ANALYSIS The topography vaties apparently. The area, of which the gradient is greater than 15 degrees, is more than 30 percents of the whole area. This kind of terrain is not a good one for modern urban planning, which means the rebuilding of the terrain is necessary.

PLANNING FOR DIFFERENT FUNCTIONAL PARCEL AREAS

CONTROLS ON BUILDING HEIGHT CURRENT

For Land Parcel A whose original building height is relatively low and building density is relatively large, we should limit the building height and keep the existing building density to protect the old building in the land parcle. Due to the overall low development level, renovation an in-situ rebuilding are widely adopted.

AFTER RENOVATION

In Land Parcel B, the old factory buildings of the watercraft repair depot are kept, the building height of the new building is controlled below four floors and the buildings remain the old factory buildings’ outlook. Land Parcel C lies in the main region that needs to be constructed. New accessotial buildings are added on the basis of maintaining of original principal buildings. This land parcel mainly adopts the method of demolition and new- building and the old symbolic\ buildings are set off by the new ones.
