Interpretation Of Changkat: Kl Lapis
'KL LAPIS' is an architecture platform for collaborative research on design methodologies and to develop critical understanding on urban challenge. By exploring the unconventional we propose alternative way to look into our cities. The first project will enable students to interpret and reinterpret an existing urban condition into a design concept by observing and abstracting the unusual within the everyday. Thereafter, students are strongly encouraged to develop further their findings into this semester main project.
Changkat Bukit Bintang is located perpendicular to Bintang Walk and Alor Road. This is the upmarket gastronomy district of Bukit Bintang. Fine dining joints line the street. It boasts pre-war, colonial buildings which have been refurbished into upmarket restaurants and pubs, serving up Western dining. Changkat Bukit Bintang is also home to one of Kuala Lumpur's hippest and happening party venues.

Isolation From Site
Social and Economic Disparity
Nearby residents and patrons are oblivious to the existence of the gallery. Relies heavily on social media to attract visitors. Does not do justice to site as can be located anywhere else with similar macroclimate.
As compares to site context, the building is situated in a luxury area next to a housing scheme that is low cost. Neighbouring section contains mixed groups of local and foreign workers that live on multiple jobs at minimum wage.

Balik Pulau is a town in the southwestern part of Penang Island in Malaysia. The seat of the Southwest Penang Island District is also located within the town. The agricultural town of Balik Pulau was established in 1794 by the British East India Company. To this day, the economy of Balik Pulau still relies heavily on agriculture; Penang's most famous products, including nutmegs, cloves and durians, are grown and harvested in the town. These have also contributed to the town's growing tourism sector; Balik Pulau's reputation for its wide variety of durians, for instance, attracts hordes of tourists between May and August each year. While Balik Pulau, and by extension, the western part of Penang Island, is generally seen as quieter in comparison to the bustling city of George Town on the other side of the island, urbanisation has also reached the town in recent years, with more residential developments being planned for this part of Penang Island.
