Spiral Tube Shanghai Tower Curtain Wall A + B

Location: Shanghai, China Completion: Spring 2015 Size: 540,000 Square Meter

The 632 meter tower employs a curtain wall system designed as a symbiosis of two glazed walls—an exterior curtain wall (Curtain Wall A) and an interior curtain wall (Curtain Wall B)—with a tapering atrium in between. The main feature considered for the exterior wall performance is based on a bio-climatic concept of a passive atrium system, where two skins are located in such a way as to create a large, full-height atrium space capitalizing on all the benefits that captured air—and the natural convection of air—can provide. The main support for the exterior curtain wall is a horizontal ring beam consisting of a horizontal pipe laterally supported, by a radial pipe strut support. The horizontal radial pipe transfers the exterior façade lateral load to the inner circular building slab edge. The radial strut pipes are rigidly connected with the horizontal girt while using a hinge connection on the other side—at the interior slab edge steel support—to allow the exterior façade to move up and down relative to the inner structure.

To carry the gravity load of the faรงade and faรงade support structure, two high-strength rods (depending on the zone) are hung from the mechanical room/refuge area above, with a robust steel structure designed within, to the horizontal ring pipe beams at 4.5 meters on-center vertically at every strut location, including an amenity floor that uses steel bushings instead of perpendicular struts to limit lateral movement. Steel bushings move in vertical direction to allow for expected combined closing and opening movements This is also where the curtain wall system vertical expansion joint is located.

Stepping Light Well UTSW Radiology Oncology Center

Location: Dallas, Texas Completion: Spring 2017 Size: 73,000 Square Feet

EXISTING FACILITY

The 73,000 SF program is strategically organized over three floors. The ground level primarily clinical, is characterized by a large, day-lit atrium which is accessed through an exterior garden arrival sequence. The 2nd level is home to most of the clinical staff has a layout that embraces collaboration, transparency and communication. The 3rd level is highlighted by the 150-person flexible conference center. The expressive architecture pays homage to the consistent academic architecture of the existing campus while blending hi-tech, comfort, technology and warmth, satisfying both academia and patient expectations alike.

Transparent Security Carrollton Police Headquarter

Location: Carrollton, Texas Completion: Spring 2017 Size: 39,000 Square Feet

Seeking to balance safety requirements with user comfort, the design incorporates the philosophy of transparent security. Natural light abundantly permeates the facility, while six foot perimeter walls provide exterior security. A prominent feature of the design is a floating canopy that visually makes the facility appear larger than a typical one story building. To keep the existing facility operational throughout the process, the design team structured a multi-phase approach: the original public entrance remained accessible during the adjacent construction of a new 26,000 SF building. Strategic renovations within the existing structure were also completed, including the repurposing of a recently added fitness center into a new SWAT team location. After the Department moved into the new facility, portions of the existing headquarters were replaced with muchneeded covered parking.

The Wichita State University Experiential Engineering Building (EEB) celebrates applied learning with a facility that forms a new gateway, links to the

2016 AIA Wichita Built Honor Award

past with an Kansas landscape and exploits the dynamic future of engineering. The EEB is the first structure of the Innovation Campus Masterplan on a highly significant site, east of the main-core campus. The building and site plan are organized around a swath of local prairie landscape that forms a literal connection between the city (revitalized West 17th Street) and the University. The building is articulated by two, brick-clad, high-bay manufacturing blocks that bracket and open onto the landscape. The third floor is a metal-clad bar housing computation and simulation labs. The interior is defined by wide corridors throughout for equipment transport and engaging views into the range of labs.

Voyage to Seascape Maritime Museum

Location: Houston, Texas Design: Spring 2013 Size: 40,000 Square Feet

Snaking through the east side of Houston lays Buffalo Bayou, a historic landmark for the city. Its shipping and trading lines helped to establish the city of Houston. An opportunity was given to design a museum that helps commemorate, educate, and preserve the stories created from Buffalo Bayou. Instead of a typical introverted museum, the design is extroverted. It resembles a bridge converging with a tower rising out of the ground, leaning slightly towards the water like a bow of a ship. The intent is to take the user on a vertical journey of elevated vistas. The views are directed towards the bayou, the actual subject matter. Views directed to downtown and all the way to the port can be seen from Seascape. Users will see the bayou as they read about it in the exhibits, making it more tangible than conventional museums. Seascape intends to celebrate Buffalo Bayou story through an impactful visual voyage.

Möbius Path Dallas Aboretum Education Center

Location: Dallas, Texas Design: Spring 2016 Size: 711,660 Square Feet

The more we looked at the cycles or rhythms of nature (the seasons) and considered the cycle of life (from a child visitor to an elder showing a grandchild the Arboretum) to the core mission of the GEC to inspire learning, we felt the building should clearly manifest “cycles.” This concept is understood as an experience, a place, a destination. A figure-eight loop-form is currently described as a “scaffold” for any number of activities. Two floors in some areas, this design is conceived as a single story wrapped around nature. Highlighting a binary relationship between the natural and the humanmade,the structure supports scientific learning and observational learning. There could be a weather station above the gift shop; water may be collected in a spiralin trough; a shade structure could aid in the comfort of the rooftop gardens. One scenario we imagine is a child walking along the loop, gathering climate information, harvesting a vegetable and entering into a classroom lab.

Elevated Park One-Fourty Retail Center

Location: Houston, Texas Design: Spring 2013 Size: 80,660 square feet

At the intersection of Main and Holman Street, just south of downtown Houston, Texas rests a sea of pavement and concrete dotted by cars and low-rise buildings. Here, hard, hot surfaces are in unnatural abundance and continue into downtown Houston with little relief. With the challenge to design a new family entertainment center, concepts were developed to oppose the blanket of concrete, an enigma plaguing our cities. One-Forty provides one acre of green space for the forty acres of endless pavement surrounding it. The green space is completely pervious, creating a hole in an otherwise solid blanket of concrete. This swatch of green seemingly cut and lifted out of the ground, creates an elevated accessible park. Similar to a park, it lacks program. However below, protected by the slope, is an approximate 80,000 square feet of various programs. These programs are meant to fuse and synergize with the green slope, and through cross-pollinating create something entirely different. .

Gloss Strata OU Medical Center Expansion

Location: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Design: Spring 2017 Size: 600,000 Square Feet

A new eight-story patient tower is planned to be connected to the existing building on the north side where the current emergency room parking. Oriented facing the state capital in far northwest, the Oklahoma University Medical Center is looking towards its future. The new facility is large and will benefit from an architectural approach which acknowledges the need to thoughtfully manage its scale. The intention is to adhere to a limited but carefully chosen material palette(horizontal stripes of cladding with beige terra cotta panel and highly reflective curtain panels) that correlates to the historical layering formation of Oklahoma Gloss Mountain, as well as evokes the natural context of Oklahoma and the immediate campus, through texture, color, and composition.

Shoreline Beacon Christus Spohn Hospital Expansion

Location: Corpus Christi, Texas Design: Spring 2015 Size: 675,000 Square Feet

The Tower expansion includes the transformation of Christus Shoreline campus by the addition of a new bed tower and consolidating all the existing services into a central and updated new facility for the community. The central lobby creates a welcoming motor plaza and a new front door for the campus. The Lobby showcases the hospital’s mission of faith-based healing by displaying a sculptural chapel located in the lobby. The new tower which includes 38-new critical care beds and a trauma emergency department. The Tower massing was shaped to optimize views of the bay from patient rooms. The common and shared amenities were located to provide views of the bay and become a beacon for the neighboring communities.

Hybrid at the border the Epic at Deep Ellum

Location: Dallas, Texas Design: Spring 2016 Size: 711,000 Square Feet

DOWNTOWN DALLAS with its lofty high-rises creates a landscape ofman-made canyons. A forest of monolithsinterspersed with empty expanses of concreteparking lots, it is impactful but far removed from the human scale.

DEEP ELLUM is well known for its stock of historical industrial buildings and active pedestrian streetscape. Rich in material character, the nearly unbroken urban fabric of the neighborhood is as important as its long history as the musical, artistic and cultural hotbed of the city. Positioned within the overlap of these two distinct areas and as part of the deep ellum mix-use masterplan, the epic office tower defines a new gateway to this distinctive neighborhood and servers as a transition between the pedestrian scale fabric and towering high-rises. Structures are broken into a series of layered forms; a vertical patchwork of the neighborhood. The “Traveling Man� sculpture welcomes visitors to an art-lined street cutting through the site, drawing in the active street life so characteristic to the area. This thoroughfare invokes the muralcovered Good-Latimer tunnel, formerly a symbolic gateway to the area, located adjacent to the site.
