The Annual Group Conference concluded in June this year, where Managing Directors from across Weir businesses came together to review strategy, performance, and our ambitions for the future. As always, the conference had a theme that reflected the Group’s focus areas and ensured our focus and alignment with the Group strategy. Aptly, this year’s meet was themed — ‘Partner of Choice, through the eyes of our customers.’ Simply put, Weir will become the partner of choice for customers. With this, our strategy is to focus on customers’
requirements and deliver it to them. To drive these issues at the conference, we had interesting speakers who spoke at the various forums. For e.g.- an Olympic gold medalist emphasised the importance of team work and continuous small incremental improvements and an academic expert challenged us to understand our value proposition.
form of ‘solving customer issues’. These shifts are very critical, making it necessary for all us to understand. Our future growth will depend on how we incorporate these shifts and the challenges that will follow. The above point only further highlights the reason of having customer centricity as the central pillar of our vision.
Most importantly, three senior customers were invited to tell us their expectations from Weir. Common words they used were collaboration, help with problems, challenges, and solutions. It is important to understand that in the eyes of our customers, supplying quality products on time is no longer enough – they want more from us. It just enhances the importance of the revelation that customer expectations are shifting and evolving from quality and on-time delivery (which are now basic expectations) to enhanced support in the
I have repeatedly emphasised that we all play an important role in customer centricity and it is everybody’s responsibility to contribute equally. We have a long journey ahead and our focus on building operational and engineering excellence will give us the foundation needed to deliver customer centricity. But unless each one of us keep customers the focus of our operations, we will fall short of achieving our goal. So, I urge all of you to start thinking on how your role impacts Weir BDK’s ability to deliver customer centricity.

Weir BDK’s first Global Conclave representatives included countries such as US, Europe, China, Middle East, Russia, Africa, Singapore, etc.
Weir BDK held its first Global Conclave in Hubli on 5th & 6th June. The meeting was widely participated by marketing
hubs from across the globe. It was held to discuss opportunities and the way forward in increasing Weir BDK’s product sales. The
A plant visit was organised for the participants, giving them an opportunity to witness the developments and improvements happening at Weir BDK, since its acquisition. The meeting
also included sessions from people at Weir BDK, who showcased improvements in operations, engineering, quality, and supply chain. In addition to the sessions, a discussion on the company’s future plan was held. Later, the participants shared their plans to further develop the markets in each of their regions.
GOST certification for all Weir BDK products In a major development on the exports front, Weir BDK received GOST certificate for all its products, allowing it to offer bids in Russian markets. While GOST certification was given to Gate & Butterfly Valves in March 2014, the company has also received the certificate for all its balance products, including Ball,
Diaphragm, Globe, and Check Valves. The certificates are valid for 5 years and will expire in 2019. This development will open up huge opportunities for Russian markets, where there is a growing demand of industrial valves.
Weir BDK delivers 287 valves to ENEL Power, Italy for Sredneuralskaya Power, Russia from 25mm Class 800 to 800mm Class 300. As the valves were to be used in a Russian project, it required GOST certification, which Weir BDK has recently acquired for all its products. Weir BDK delivered a significant valve order from Italy. Italy’s largest power company and Europe’s second listed utility by installed capacity – ENEL – placed the order. ENEL is a leading integrated 2
player in the European and Latin American power & gas markets. The order for 287 Gate, Check & Butterfly valves was placed for a power project in Russia, called Sredneuralskaya Power. The valves ranged
Despite challenges of sourcing large size casting, finding machining vendors for the size, machining and welding of large size bodies, and other components and assembly and testing
challenges, the team left no stone unturned. They came together to ensure that all the challenges were overcome. During manufacturing and delivering, there was active coordination between the operations teams and the customer, which led to on-time delivery of the order. This order has once again proved Weir BDK’s capability for ontime delivery of quality products that meet customer requirements.
Blood Donation Camp at Weir BDK
On 13 June, WEIR BDK employees came together for a good cause. Over 60 employees donated blood, as part of a Camp organised in association with Rotary Club Midtown and Dr. R B Patil’s Cancer Hospital Navanagar,
Dharwad. Employees generously volunteered in the camp and collected 60 units of blood. Weir BDK regularly organises blood donation camps and receives enthusiastic participation by all their employees. Blood donation cause is
of high priority in India. As per World Health Organisation (WHO) reports, India faces a whopping blood deficit of approximately 3 million units annually (only nine million units are collected annually, while the need is for 12 million units), a deficit of 25% annually.
Even with a population of 1.2 billion, India faces a blood shortage of as high as 3 million units. Experts say that if only an additional 2% of Indians donated blood, the shortage could be addressed. Just as Weir BDK, responsible corporates across the country are joining hands with several institutions and hospitals to create volunteer programmes and contribute to the cause.
