Safe Hiking In New Hampshire

Hike Safe CardWe want you to be safe on the trails! The NH Fish and Game Department and the White Mountain National Forest are partners in a mountain safety education program called “hikeSafe” to help get the word out on what hikers need to know. As part of this program, the Hiker Responsibility Code is posted on hikeSafe signs at all major trailheads in New Hampshire. The code applies to all hikers, from beginners on a short hike to experienced outdoor enthusiasts embarking on an expedition. Please practice the elements of the code and share the code with fellow trekkers. This will help increase responsibility and reduce the need for Search and Rescue efforts.

hikeSafe Hiker Responsibility Code You are responsible for: • Knowledge and gear. Become self reliant by learning about the terrain, conditions, local

weather and your equipment before you start. • To leave your plans. Tell someone where you are going, the trails you are hiking, when you’ll return and your emergency plans. • To stay together. When you start as a group, hike as a group, end as a group. Pace your hike to the slowest person. • To turn back. Weather changes quickly in the mountains. Fatigue

and unexpected conditions can also affect your hike. Know your limitations and when to postpone your hike. The mountains will be there another day. • For emergencies. Even if you are headed out for just an hour, an injury, severe weather or a wrong turn could become life threatening. Don’t assume you will be rescued; know how to rescue yourself. • To share the hiker code with others. Hike Safe Logo hikeSafe: It’s Your Responsibility. Additional resources for hiking preparation, including how to plan your trip and what to know if you’re hiking with children or a group, can be found at hikesafe.com.

Doug Smith stands next to the Mini Mount, the famous scale model replica of the M/S Mount Washington.

W here Is T he Mini Mount?

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

It once plied the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee and often drew more attention than its bigger brother, The MS Mount Washington. But, the M/V Little Mount Washington, otherwise known as “The Mini Mount”, a 1/5th scale of the original, has not been seen gliding across the waters with its few passengers (and hundreds of Barbie Dolls) for years and many have wondered what has become of the popular scale model of the big ship. The story starts in the living room of Doug Smith of Laconia, where an even minier version of the Mount Washington sits. It is the original scale model “model” of the Mini Mount which was built by Jack Miller and Ed Aleski of Wolfeboro around 1985 as a warmup in preparing for the building of the actual “Mini Mount” itself. Once they had decided they were up to the task, Miller and Aleski went

Jack Miller and Ed Aleski, dressed in Captain’s gear at the launching of the Mini Mount on July 4th,1995. ahead with their ambitious project; a project that took over seven years till it was finally completed in 1995 and launched on Lake Winnipesaukee on July 4th of that year and sailed on the big lake for summers until around 2008. Doug Smith bought the Mini Mount

from the Mt Washington Cruise Lines. which had been gifted it by Miller and Aleski, after they had for years tried to sell it themselves. “We had seen it sitting outside in Center Harbor for years just falling apart. It looked pathetic,” said Tim Lacey, who worked along with Doug in restoring the

Mini Mount. “Then one day Doug knocked on my door and said “I bought the Mini Mount.’” What he bought was really a piece of not just local history but something that was a true labor of love not usually seen in projects such as this. Miller and Aleski didn’t just build the Mini Mount based on their own speculation but they had been given the original blueprints to work from and used them in creating what is just about a perfect replica of the big boat taking in every detail they could right down to the horn. “It was unbelievable the effort they put into this,” said Lacey. “And they certainly weren’t young See mount on 30

Take mysterious vacations around the world without ever leaving the Lakes Region.

by Debby Montague

Mysterious Travel

Book Reviewer

“Oh, the places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss You don’t need a passport, you won’t have to stand in the security line, and the packing is always light. You can visit favorite locales, discover new places, and you won’t have to do much planning to get there. All you will need is a little time in the bookstore or library or on the internet and an investment of anything from ninety-nine cents to thirty dollars and you’ve got yourself a vacation. I’ve been vacationing from my porch or deck or armchair as long as I can remember. When I was a kid I spent long afternoons on the front porch in a rocker, feet propped up on the railing, traveling through English moors with Cathy and Heathcliff. Not so long ago I spent many an evening in fact on my deck but in my mind I was in Lausanne, Switzerland in the cathedral with le guet. Sometimes when I travel by chair I return to places I have visited in the real world and other times I take advantage of the ease of armchair travel by going somewhere that has piqued my curiosity or

someplace that I want to reconnoiter as a possibility for a future vacation. I highly recommend traveling by book. If you decide you don’t like the place you won’t be moping around for days waiting for your return flight. Instead you can just donate the book to the library where someone else might like the destination better. You can even season your virtual trip with a little mystery. That’s one of my favorite vacations – a virtual trip spiced with a mystery. And here are some of my favorite mysterious travels. It’s unlikely that I’ll ever actually visit Sweden or Thailand but I’ve had some fun checking out both places in books. Helene Tursten can show you the sights in Goteborg Sweden with her Inspector Irene Huss series. In The Beige Man a hit and run accident, a car theft and a hidden corpse will help show you around the city. If you want warmer climes you can chase after Timothy Hallinan’s Poke Rafferty in Bangkok, but if you go there with Poke For The Dead you’d better have your running shoes on and some Under Armour clothing because you’ll want to move fast when the bad guys are after you and the heat is stifling. Some of the biggest travel destinations in Europe are London, Paris and Rome, and I can think of no betSee montague on 28

New Hampshire Fish and Game manages 14 lakes for landlocked salmon: Big Dan Hole Pond, First and Second Connecticut Lakes, Conway Lake, Lake Francis, Merrymeeting Lake, Newfound Lake, Ossipee Lake, Big and Little Squam Lakes, Sunapee Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee and Winnisquam Lake. Pleasant Lake in New London also is managed for landlocked salmon, but is classified as a trout pond. Netting done last fall by the NH Fish and Game Department revealed a strong, age-two yearclass of salmon in Lake Winnipesaukee, which will dominate the catch as three-year-olds this spring. There will also be some trophy-sized salmon available in Sunapee Lake, according to N.H. Fish and Game Large Lakes Biologist Don Miller. Early season anglers often check out the Winnipesaukee River, which flows through the Weirs channel into Paugus Bay, and through the Lakeport Dam/

Lake Opechee area. “Drop-down” salmon (and rainbow trout) are found throughout these river reaches. Other traditional areas include the Winnipesaukee River through Laconia to Dixon Point at Lake Winnisquam, and Lochmere Dam at Silver Lake. The Newfound River in Bristol offers great fly-fishing-only water that can often produce dropdown rainbows and salmon. Additionally, several popular Winnipesaukee shore fishing locations exist at the Merrymeeting River (fly-fishing-only, barbless, catch and release), and the mouth of the Merrymeeting River as it enters Alton Bay, downstream of the famous stone arch bridge. Other good sites to visit include the Long Island Bridge in Moultonborough, Governors Island Bridge in Gilford, Smith River inlet at Wolfeboro Bay, and Meredith and Center Harbor town docks. At these locations, everything from smelt, shiners and worms under a slip bobber to small jigs will take salmon, as See fishing on 33

This was a pretty remarkable achievement due to the fact that prior to this effort, books involving birds were replete with recipes or hunting techniques.

In 1911, Anna Botsford Comstock, widely recognized as the mother of nature education, wrote “Handbook of Nature Study”. This work was ahead of its time in calling attention to the importance of natural re-

lationships that work to form what now is known as an ecosystem. By the early 20th century, Roger Tory Peterson’s “A Field Guide to the Birds” had been published. The book signaled a fundamental change in the amateur study of birds, from actually shooting them to watching them through binoculars. Peterson devised a simply system of bird identification. In 1934, the National Association of Audubon Societies hired Peterson as its educational director. He redesigned Audubon Junior Leaflets and wrote extensively about winter bird feeding in the Boy Scouts’ Bird Study merit badge pamphlet. By the time his “Field Guide to Western Birds” was published in 1941, the gap was bridged between professional ornithologists and amateur backyard birds. Dave Decker, a Civil War historian will bring to life, Pickett’s Charge, a skirmish in the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3rd, 1863. Pickett’s Charge happened on the third and final day of battle. This presentation is a must for any Civil War buff, Dave is a very knowledgeable and passionate speaker. Saturday, July 11th, 11am “Meredith Chroniclesa slideshow”, Featuring Dan Heyduk Ancient beginnings only hinted at the great things to come in the story of Meredith. The earliest residents hunted mammoth and caribou and created the first birch-bark canoe to traverse Lake Winnipesaukee and the network of waterways. Centuries later, Meredith’s Dudley Leavitt wrote Leavitt’s Farmers Almanack for more than fifty years. The local woods were the solitary home of Joseph Plumer, who was perhaps New Hampshire’s most financially successful hermit. Motorcycles, cars and horses once raced on the winter ice of Lake Winnipesaukee. Together, these stories weave

Bob Fogg’s seaplane at Weirs Beach.

Painting of Abenaki Indians. the distinctive fabric of Meredith history. Dan Heyduk’s town history goes beyond documents and dates, illustrating the unique character of a multifaceted community. Wednesday, July 22nd, 7pm “Digging into Native History in New Hampshire, Featuring Robert Goodby Abenaki history has been reduced to nearinvisibility as a result of conquest, a conquering culture that placed little value on the Indian experience, and a strategy of self-preservation that required many Abenaki to go “underground,” con-

cealing their true identities for generations to avoid discrimination and persecution. Robert Goodby reveals archaeological evidence that shows their deep presence here, inches below the earth’s surface. Wednesday, July 29th, 7pm “Bob Fogg and the Golden Age of Aviation”, Featuring Jane Rice “Bob Fogg and New Hampshire’s Golden Age of Aviation” tells the story of the Granite State’s true pioneer of aviation, and includes many previously unpublished images of airplanes and aviators of the 1920s and 1930s. Bob

(877)-528-4104

Fogg brought aviation to Concord and the Weirs in the early ‘20s and he and his pilots introduced flying to a whole generation that grew up in that time period. For those interested in the history of the Lakes Region, it describes the seaplane base that was a prominent feature of the Weirs boardwalk from 1923 until the early 1950s, and

the planes that hopped passengers from many lakeside resorts throughout New Hampshire. Classic Wacos, Travel Airs, Beech Staggerwings and Sikorsky amphibians that once plied the blue skies over Lake Winnipesaukee come to life again in the pages of this fascinating history.

6 Often O verlooked Hikes In S outhern New Hampshire

by Steve Smith

Appalachian Mountain Club

Searching for a day hike that’s easy to get to and serves up an “off-the-beaten-path” appeal? Often overshadowed by the classic and well-traveled paths of the White Mountains, the hiking trails of southern New Hampshire are a great option for day hikers looking for quiet trails. We asked Steve Smith, NH hiking expert and editor of AMC’s fully revised Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide, 4th edition (featuring Mount Monadnock and Mount Cardigan), to share six of his favorite often overlooked hikes in southern NH. Happy hiking! Bald Rock and Monte Rosa [5-mile loop, 1,550 ft. vertical gain, 3:15 estimated hiking time]. An interesting loop with many views along less-used trails can be made over these two open spurs of Mt. Monadnock from the parking area on the south side; use Old Toll Rd., Parker Trail, Cliff Walk, Smith Connecting Link, Amphitheatre Trail, Smith Summit Trail, Monte Rosa Trail, White Arrow Trail, and Old Half Way House Trail.

Pisgah Ridge Loop [9.5-mile loop, 1,450 ft., 5:30]. This loop leads through some of the finest scenery in Pisgah State Park, including four viewpoints on Pisgah Ridge and Baker and North Round ponds. From the Kilburn Rd. trailhead on NH 63, take Kilburn Rd., Kilburn Loop, a connecting path, the northern section of Pisgah Ridge Trail, Baker Pond Trail (with a side trip north to Baker Pond), Reservoir Trail, the spur to North Round Pond, and the southern section of Pisgah Ridge Trail, returning via the connecting path, Kilburn Loop, and Kilburn Rd. Orange Mountain [5.6-mile round trip, 1,600 ft., 3:35]. Good views are found atop this southern spur of Mt. Cardigan; starting at Cardigan Lodge, use Holt Trail, Holt-Clark Cutoff, Vistamont Trail, and Skyland Trail. South Uncanoonuc Mountain [2.2-mile loop, 750 ft., 1:30]. Make a partial loop visiting several viewpoints by using Incline, Walker, and Summit trails to the south viewpoint with a side trip to the west viewpoint; descend via Summit Trail.

Klem and Mack Mountains [6.1-mile loop, 1,200 ft., 3:40]. This loop on East Gilford Fire Rd., Round Pond Trail, Round Pond-Piper Link, Mount Klem-Mount Mack Loop, and Round PondMount Mack Trail takes in two summits with views and beautiful Round Pond. Extend the trip with a second loop over Belknap Mountain via Round Pond-Piper Link, Boulder Trail, and East Gilford Trail [8.3-mile loop, 2,200 ft., 5:15]. Sweet Trail [4.6 miles one-way, 100 ft., 2:20]. This trail in Durham and Newmarket provides an extended woods walk passing by many interesting wetlands and ending at the edge of Great Bay. A one-way traverse can be made with a relatively easy car spot. Shorter out-and-back trips can be made from three different trailheads. Steve Smith has been a hiking enthusiast for over 30 years. He has written several guidebooks for the White Mountains region, and served as coeditor of the 27th, 28th, and 29th editions of AMC’s White Mountain Guide and the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th editions of AMC’s Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide (now available in AMC’s online store with 20% member discount).

making it a convenience purchase. No longer did people have to make a special trip to purchase wild bird seed. Knauf & Tesch, now known as Kaytee, also started as a general store, selling feed for dairy farmers in Wisconsin in the 1860s. It was Knauf’s interest in racing pigeons that led eventually to bagging seed for both caged and wild birds. After WWII, suburbs sprang up like sunflowers (sorry, couldn’t’ help that line!) and people tuned in to gardening, birds and environmental issues. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring raised awareness of the fragile ecosystems and a grassroots market was created for improved wild bird feeders and seed products. Today, nearly 53,000,000 Americans feed wild birds on a daily basis. Feeding songbirds around the house has grown into a multi-billiondollar industry. Birders spend more than $3 bil-

Teaching Worms How To S wim

by Ed Allard

Contributing Writer

This was originally published in the Weirs Times on May 2, 1996. ZAAK Walton never made a believer out of me. I can see going out in a boat on a nice day, tossing the anchor overboard, popping the cold contents of a sixpack and thumbing through the latest Weirs Times as I lean back against the cushions, but I don’t want to be bothered by some dumb fish nibbling on an expired mudworm. Oh, sure, when I was a kid I waded barefoot in the Tioga brook many a spring day spearing suckers, but I never considered that fishing and there was no skill involved. The finny creatures hung around almost motionless on the brook bed, pursing their lips stupidly, blowing an occasional bubble past their bulging eyes and seemingly unaware of the spear lunging at them. No matter how hard up we were, Mother would never have fried a sucker and Father would never have eaten it if she had. He encouraged my piscatorial pastime, however, because he buried a sucker in each hill of corn that he planted, an old Indian trick that he had picked up somewhere; said that it made the corn grow faster. Having experienced a whiff of the defunct fish just before he hoed the dirt over it I could understand the corn sprout’s eagerness to get up out of that smelly dirt into the fresh air. Steve Klum talked me into going fishing with him one day when I was old enough to know better. There were two mistakes made that day; Steve’s suggestion that I come along and my agreeing to do so, but I had the mistaken idea that it might be interesting to find out what makes a man want to sit on a hard seat in a

leaky boat, dangling a worm in the water. Steve showed me how to thread a worm on a hook and the worm didn’t seem too happy about that part of it either. I expected it to shriek when I impaled it. I had hardly begun to dangle it in the water, looking over the side to see if it was swimming, when Steve got a bite and started rocking the boat and whooping loud enough to scare off any fish that happened to be in the vicinity. The whooping I could stand but I, who gets seasick watering the lawn, found the rocking boat a little too much. As I was busy leaning over the side of the boat attending to the consequences of my seasickness Steve hauled in a large eel and flipped it into the boat where it writhed and wriggled in a frenzy of activity. Now, I don’t like snakes, nor anything remotely resembling them. Forgetting my regurgitation rhythm, I grabbed an oar and flailed wildly at the eel, causing the boat to rock, the eel to escape, the oar to slip out of my grasp and Steve to surprise me with the power of his vocabulary. Man, he came up with words thatI had never heard of, and him an elder of the church. It must have looked funny to see him trying to use an oar to paddle a cranky rowboat back to shore. The boat wasn’t half as cranky as he was though. For some reason, he never asked me to go fishing with him again, in fact, our relationship seemed to cool quite a bit. Anyhow, if he had asked me, I wouldn’t have gone.

My old friend Pickerel Pete was not one to be too concerned over laws that applied to fishing and one afternoon, before the fishing season was officially open, was sitting on the bank of the brook waiting for a nibble. Sensing someone behind him, he looked up saw someone in uniform and asked, “Be yew the new game warden?” “Yup, I be.” Without a sign of con-

cern, Pickerel Pete began to move his fishpole slowly back and forth. After a moment, he lifted the line out of the water and pointed to a minnow wriggling on the end. With all the innocence of the guiltless, he explained, “Just teachin’ him how to swim.” And, speaking of worms, have you ever wondered how much fishing Noah could have done with only two worms aboard? Things like that keep me from sleeping well now and then. Jerusha Perkins, who owned a nice little farm out on Wishbone Road, also owned a little shack down in Florida where he and his wife spent the coldest winter months. Looking for a farm loan one year, he was turned down by Hiram Smerd, the bank’s coldeyed loan officer. Jerusha took the refusal calmly and departed for Webb Smith’s grocery store where he bought a fair sized haddock and toted it back to the bank in a paper bag. Given access to his safe deposit

25

box, he glanced around to see that the coast was clear, took the fish from the bag and locked it in the box. The next morning he and his wife took the local to Boston, heading for their Florida vacation. Jerusha and his Mrs. returned three months l a t e r , a n d di s c o v e r e d that they could smell the bank the moment they descended from the train. Defunct fish is not difficult to recognize. At the bank the doors were open to the cold March winds and the staff shivered in their overcoats and earflaps. Hiram Smerd leaped up and down with joy when he saw the Perkins, asked if Jerusha still wanted that loan and could hardly wait to escort him to the safe deposit boxes where both held their noses as they removed the reeking haddock to bury it deeply behind the bank. Hiram sent in his fifty cents for the Sons of Izaac Walton Annual Fish Dinner but never showed up. Someone remarked that Hiram didn’t care too much for fish any more. This may be the month of May but I’m thinking of doing a little ice fishing if I can find the Jim Beam, a tall glass and the requisite ice cubes. Now that is fishing that I can sit back and enjoy!

Rainy Day Blues? Funspot Has New 18-Hole Indoor Mini-Golf

The Funspot Family Entertainment Center in Weirs Beach has recently opened its brand new, 18-hole Indoor Mini-Golf Course. Using the completely refurbished, handmade scale-models of New Hampshire landmarks which were the fixture of Funspot’s outdoor course since the 1960s, this 5500 square-foot course is perfect for all ages and only costs five dollars to play. In 1964, the outdoor Mini-Golf course was the first attraction at Funspot after Bob and his brother, John Lawton, moved their business to its new location on Rte 3 after operating their indoor mini-golf and arcade “The Weirs Sports Center” above Tarlson’s Arcade on Lakeside Ave in Weirs Beach since 1952. (The Rte 3 location is where Funspot is to-

Funspot’s Founder and Owner, Bob Lawton, leans against the self-service golf ball dispenser for the new 18-hole Indoor Mini Golf course that was recently built in a previously unused 5500 square foot section above the twenty-lane bowling center. day.) The first ornaments used on the original Mini-Golf were made by Jim Clough of Pine Grove Cabinet Shop in Winnisquam. It was the only Mini-Golf in the Lakes Region at the time and was successful for years. Besides a replica of the M/S Mount Washington, there were just a few generic ornaments originally for a few of the holes, all of which gave a New Hampshire feel. The windmill on Hole Three, The Barn on Hole Five, the Church on Hole Thirteen and the Outhouse on Hole Sixteen and there was Waldo the Whale on Hole Nine. Bob and John had the idea for the New Hampshire landmarks ornaments for some time and after Bob met Fred Thompson of North Conway who was an expert builder the See golf on 38

THE WEIRS TIMES BOATING & RECREATION GUIDE — Spring / Summer 2015

James R. Benn montague from 9

ter guides than Arthur Bryant and John May in London, Aimee Leduc in Paris, and Billy Boyle in Rome. In London in Christopher Fowler’s The Victoria Vanishes Bryant and May will take you on a tour of centuries old pubs and some muse-

ums, too. But be careful you don’t trip on the dead bodies piling up or Crippin, staff cat. Spending a vacation with A i m e e Leduc is always fun for me because I love Paris. Cara Black’s Murder On The Ile Saint Louis brings back fond memories of my first visit to the City of Light, but when I stayed on the Ile Saint Louis I wasn’t worried about being followed by cops, falling into the Seine, or finding babies in the courtyard. I’d like to see Rome before I die and I think the Vatican, though not strictly speaking a part of Rome, would

be a great place to begin. I had to do a little time travel to see Vatican City, going all the way back to World War II, but spending time with James R. Benn’s Billy Boyle is always good time in spite of the horrors of war and the constant threat of the enemy, and my visit there in Death’s Door was both educational and exciting. Maybe you’d like to stay a little closer to home in your armchair and see some places that are relatively nearby but also rather exotic and glamorous. You might go north and visit our Canadian neighbors. I’ve been told that a visit to Quebec City is like a visit to Paris without the long plane ride, and I plan to find out someday soon. Meanwhile Louise Penny

and her Chief Inspector Armand Gamache can give you an excellent idea of the milieu in Bury Your Dead. For glamor you can’t beat the Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, the capital of the World – New York City.

And who better to show you around than Nero Wolfe’s handsome and intrepid legman, Archie Goodwin. In Rex Stout’s The Silent Speaker you can meet up with Archie at Grand Central Station and he will show you around New York’s premier hotel, the Waldorf, take you to the cop shop on Centre Street, and share a lunch at a Brazilian restaurant on 52nd Street. While you’re on the tour perhaps you can help Wolfe and Archie find out who killed Cheney Boone, the silent speaker. No matter if you travel by book, car, train or airplane you should always have your favorite authors and characters along. Bon voyage!

THE WEIRS TIMES BOATING & RECREATION GUIDE — Spring / Summer 2015 fishing from 11

well as rainbow trout. To ensure the future of high-quality landlocked salmon fisheries, anglers must take extra care when releasing salmon, as the percentage of hook-wounded fish continues to be a problem. Hook wounded/scarred fish are significantly shorter and poorer in body condition than non-hook-wounded counterparts of the same age. Using rubber nets and proper release techniques (for example, don’t “shake” fish off the hook), and releasing lightly hooked healthy salmon, while choosing to harvest previously hook-wounded fish, are ways to minimize the negative effects of hook wounding, thereby increasing the number of trophy salmon available. See a Fish and Game video and a brochure about landlocked salmon in New Hampshire, and tips for safe handling of these fish, at http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/fishing/ salmon-pledge.html. N.H. fishing licenses can be purchased online at fishnh.com, or from any Fish and Game license agent. that is just a guess,” said Smith. The Mini Mount was taken out of service in 2008 as it needed some repair work. It was eventually sold to Mount Washington Cruises. Since it couldn’t be insured for commercial use, they put it up for sale. There were no takers until the fall of 2011 when Doug Smith

bought it. “I really didn’t think it would last one more winter outdoors,” said Smith. Smith and Lacey didn’t really have much of a plan as what to do with the Mini Mount after they purchased it, they just knew they wanted to save it. Setting up shop under a large enclosure on the grounds of Dave’s Motor-

boat Shoppe in Gilford, they went to work on restoration. There was a lot of pine trim and steel fasteners so it had a lot of rust and rot and it was getting close to where it was going to be cut up for salvage,” said Smith. According to their website www.mvminimount. com : “There was clearly work to done, but without a master plan or an instruction manual, the first task was just to take it all in. Wires; switches; gauges; tubes; access panels; and hundreds of Barbie doll “passengers.” (If only they had taken notes.) Slowly but surely, spiderwebs were cleared, rust was chipped away, 3-in-One Oil was applied, and the Mini Mount started to look like herself again.” It was worked on all year long. Tim even worked on it through the winter as Doug was in Florida. See mount on 37

“The restoration included replacing a lot of the rotted wood as well as sanding and painting and the mechanicals are in fairly good shape,” said Lacey Still the ultimate goal isn’t to get it back on the water. With the intention merely of saving it the seaworthiness isn’t the biggest issue. In fact, along with the coordination of their friend, Al Dirth, who has been helping to promote the resurrection of the Mini Mount, the have been in conversation with the folks at the NH Boat Museum in Wolfeboro to see if they might have an interest in using it as a centerpiece in the entrance to the new museum they are planning. “My idea all along was really just to save it and restore it into looking nice. Not necessarily looking to get it back on the water,” said Smith. The complete restoration is still a ways off but you can be sure that the resurrection of this part of Lake Winnipesaukee history is going to be around to tell its own story for generations yet to come.

creation of the scale model landmarks took off. Bob would spend countless hours at many of the historic landmarks taking measurements both outside and inside. He spent a whole day inside Kimball’s Castle in Gilford making sure he had all the dimensions correct. He then drew scaled down diagrams of

the proper size and dimensions and brought them to Fred who made perfect scale models. The first landmark to be built was Spindle Point in 1965. Others to follow were the North Conway Railroad Station, the Cog Railway, The Jackson Covered Bridge, Kimball’s Castle and the Sap House which was scaled after one

Unlike the fiberglass ornaments used on most Mini-Golf courses today, the Funspot ones were made of wood and every year they would bear the brunt of summer weather: rain, storms, heat and humidity as well as regular wear and tear as thousand of players would traverse the course over the summer months. For fifty years the models were removed from the course after Labor Day and transported to Funspot’s maintenance building where they would each have a makeover every year. Some just needed a simple paint job while others had to be rebuilt as time and Mother Nature worked against the wood. Over the last several years, the number of players during the season
