One of the earliest navigational maps (1911) of Lake Winnipesaukee with over 200 buoys. Today there are 777 navigational markers.

by Tom Lacey

A History Of Navigating On Lake Winnipesaukee

Contributing Writer

Lake Winnipesaukee has been the inspiration for many stories over the years that have caught my interest. One story that has escaped me is the evolution of the system of markers that guides boaters into safe waters and away from the numerous shallows and rock infested areas of the lake. The Big Lake has been described as one of, if not the most, hazard filled, treacherous lakes in the U.S. to navigate. That point is substantiated by the 777 navigational markers currently on the lake. In 1833 the steamer Belknap was launched in Lakeport and made runs to Center Harbor,

The Steamer Belknap was one of the first steamboats on Lake Winnipesaukee. It made its round without buoys to mark hazards. In 1841 she sunk during a storm out by Steamboat Island.

Wolfeboro, Alton Bay and the Weirs. The Belknap was 96 feet long and 33 feet wide. It made its rounds without any buoys to mark hazards on the way. There were many other steamboats hauling passengers and freight on Winnipesaukee before the New Hampshire legislature approved $250 on April 11, 1891 to provide lighting in the Weirs Channel and maintaining buoys on Lake Winnipesaukee. New Hampshire was the first state in the United States to mark inland lakes for navigation. Early navigation lights were oil lamps and would hold a three day supply of oil. THE WEIRS TIMES BOATING & RECREATION GUIDE — Spring / Summer 2015 2017

— OFF THE SHELF/SUMMER READING —

Ten Books In Ten Days

by Debby Montague Book Reviewer

He thought: Best of an island is once you get there—you can’t go any farther... you’ve come to the end of things… And Then There Were None, Agatha Christie Here you are on vacation in the Lakes Region. Maybe you have a summer home on Beaver Island. Perhaps you’ve rented a cottage on or near the Lake or you’re treating yourself to an extended stay at Church Landing in Meredith. Maybe you’re a fortunate one and you live here. No matter, you have ten glorious days of R&R ahead of you. Sure, you’ll be swimming and hiking and boating. You’ll be eating at some fine and fun restaurants, grilling in the yard, or picnicking on the beach. But if you are a bibliophile you are going to fill a good portion of those vacation days reading. Ten books in ten days isn’t a challenge; it’s an indulgence. So go ahead. Pour yourself an ice tea. Situate the rocker just so on the deck. Pick a book from your stack, one that you’ve

been waiting to read or re-read, open the cover, and start. Here’s a list of books I’d have on my vacation in the Lakes Region. If your list isn’t yet filled maybe one of these will pique you. Day 1 – Murder On The Mount by Spencer Charles, Blue Mountain Press, 1984 (You’ll have to get this one from Amazon Marketplace or another used book seller.) You’re at Lake Winnipesaukee so what better way to begin your Ten Books in Ten Days than with a book set in the Lakes Region? Ian and Kathy Michaels relocate to Cold Harbor from Boston, get to know the locals and the lake lore and wind up involved in a murder. Great fun and some great tidbits about the locale.

Day 2 – The Water Room: A Peculiar Crimes Unit Mystery by Christopher Fowler, Bantam, 2005. In between chapters you’re probably gazing out at the water so why not read a mystery with a water theme. Christopher Fowler’s PeSee montague on 38

The Hub Of Vacationland

As Described In A 1926 Photogravure by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

“The Hub of Vacationland “ is the phrase used by the Laconia Evening Citizen in a photogravure edition of the paper in 1926 used to illustrate and describe the city of Laconia. What is a photogravure? Without trying to explain something that I do not fully understand, I will just say that it involves a printing process and the resulting product that has been used to publish special supplements to newspapers. The word rotogravure was also used concerning the publication and in the song by Irving Berlin, “Easter Parade” which included the phrase “ the photographers will snap us and you’ll find that you’re in the rotogravure.” This article concerns the words that were used in that 1926 photogravure, published in the first year of the Citizen’s existence, describing the attractions of Laconia and its surroundings. The population of Laconia was said to have doubled or tripled during the summer as visitors came to enjoy what the area had to offer vacation-

ers. It was reported that the city was home to six parks and playgrounds with the largest being Opechee Park. Readers were informed that “A race track is maintained where some of the most interesting horse races of New England are held. On these grounds are conducted the annual Belknap County Fairs. Supervised recreation through competent instruction is maintained for children. The Pearl Street grounds and Library Park on the grounds of the Gale Memorial Library were also given special attention. Base ball and football games were played at the Pearl Street location involving both high school teams within the state and teams representing industrial groups. Recreational activities continued at the Pearl Street location during the winter months with skating on a rink claimed to be the largest outdoor rink in this part of the country and one that was considered ideal by contestants for the New England Amateur Skating Championships. Nationally known skaters put on exhibitions during the Winnipesaukee Winter Carnival. “A two track toboggan chute, electrically lighted and efficiently manned puts See smith on 25 roses on

Postcard showing the Boardwalk and Irwin’s Winnipesaukee Gardens at Weirs Beach. The once thriving summer spot for big bands, beauty contests, speed boat rides and more is getting a new life with a huge investment from the new owners of the Winnipesaukee Pier.

by Brendan Smith

New Life For Landmark Weirs Attraction

Weirs Times Editor

Its storied history will forever be a part of Weirs Beach and surrounding areas and this summer a new chapter will be added to the Winnipesaukee Pier as East Coast Flightcraft of New England has been diligently working on restoring the site. The heyday of the Pier was the days of Irwin’s Winnipesaukee Gardens, started by Jim Irwin. Irwin was the force behind many Weirs Beach enterprises, but it was soon after the New Hotel Weirs and Music Hall burned on November 7th, 1924 that he devised a plan to build a giant dance hall right over the boat livery at the Weirs. Irwin’s Winnipesaukee Gar-

dens opened on Memorial Day weekend 1925 and was an instant success. Over the years it attracted most of the big band names of the era to play there in the summer. Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Harry James and more provided unforgettable dancing entertainment at the Weirs. Irwin’s Winnipesaukee Gardens was also popular for the speedboat rides they offered on the lake with their fleet of seven Chris-Crafts all with the name “Miss Winnipesaukee.” Thousands of passengers took the rides over the years. Irwin’s Winnipesaukee Gardens was also the original home of the Miss WinSee weirs on 32

Bob Fogg brought aviation to Concord and the Weirs in the early ‘20s and he and his pilots introduced flying to a whole genera-

tion that grew up in that period. For those interested in the history of the Lakes Region, it describes the seaplane base that was a prominent feature of the Weirs boardwalk from 1923 until the early 1950s, and the planes that hopped passengers from many lakeside resorts throughout New Hampshire. Which private estates were recognized as exemplary, and who were their owners? Using historic images and texts, Ashjian discusses wellknown estates now open to the public such as The Fells on Lake Sunapee, The Rocks in Bethlehem, Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish, and she includes local examples when possible. Saturday September 2nd, 11am “Lakes Region Stories”, featuring Dan Heyduk Local Historian and author Dan Heyduk will give a lecture entitled ‘Lakes Region Stories’ focusing on the history of some of the towns around the lake, including Meredith, Center Harbor, Moultonborough and Sandwich.

K ayak F ishing Opportunities

by Tim Moore Contributing Writer

With the popularity of kayak fishing increasing at a rapid pace, kayak anglers are looking for new and different fishing opportunities. In many ways, I consider New Hampshire as a sleeper state in terms of fishing opportunities. From our modest 18 miles of coast line, to Lake Winnipesaukee and the Connecticut River, New Hampshire is loaded with possibilities that many kayak anglers never knew about. The number of places with great fishing are too numerous to list, but here are a few of my favorites. Seacoast Growing up in the seacoast NH area, I cut my teeth catching flounder and striped bass. When I began kayak fishing it was natural for me to begin at the beginning. Winter flounder are delicious and can be found in most shallow harbors and estuaries with a sand or mud bottom. Kayaks are probably the most effective way of catching flounder in the quiet waters of the harbors. The ability to drift in and around tightly packed mooring fields offers kayak anglers the ability to reach fish that are normally safe from larger boats and shore anglers.

Striped bass, while delicious to eat, are extremely fun to catch in a kayak. My kayak fishing clients travel from all over the country each summer to experience large numbers of schoolies (fish under 28”) or that one or two larger fish in the 30” range. All it usually takes is connecting with one 30” fish and the striper isn’t the only one hooked. There is little that beats the Nantucket sleigh ride that a big striper provides.

Lakes Region Lake Winnipesaukee is arguably New Hampshire’s most well-known lake and its reputation for landlocked salmon, lake trout, and jumbo white perch precedes it. However, there are other fantastic lakes around Winnipesaukee that offer some amazing kayak fishing opportunities, such as Little and Big Squam Lakes. Big Squam has one of the best smallmouth bass fisheries in New England, as well as trophy landlocked salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout, and jumbo white perch. When you add the breathtaking beauty of Squam Lake to the world class fishing you have the ingredients that have sparked many a love affair between kayak angler and lake.

Connecticut River Most of the 275 mile stretch of the Connecticut River that forms the border between New Hampshire and Vermont, with its deep and slow moving water, numerous oxbows and setbacks, and diversity of fish species makes it a mecca for kayak anglers from all over New England. The river is home to some of the state’s largest northern pike. I have had clients catch and release northern pike as long as 43”. A close second to the pike

Help Pull The Plug On Aquatic Invasive Species

by Andrea LaMoreaux

Vice President/ NH Lakes Association

Do you motorboat, sail, or paddle on any of New Hampshire’s 1,000 lakes and ponds or 17,000 miles of rivers and streams? If you do, you know that there are beautiful vistas and wildlife to enjoy and interesting shorelines and coves to explore. You also know that getting out onto the water is fun and it makes you feel good. Unfortunately, you may also know that boating in some areas of our lakes and rivers isn’t so fun— approximately 80 New Hampshire waterbodies contain infestations of invasive species that can clog boat motors and propellers, making boating unpleasant and difficult. Invasive species infestations can also make swimming dangerous and are difficult and expensive to manage. They

easy it is to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. Boaters who always clean, drain, and dry their boat, trailer, and gear after taking it out of the water will prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species like milfoil, Asian clams, and more. This boating season, our Lake Hosts will not only continue to teach and show boaters how to prevent the spread of invasive species, they will also be providing information about a new state law that all boaters need to know about. Effective January 1, 2017, after taking a boat out of the water, boaters in New Hampshire are required to do the following: 1.Clean off all hitchhiking fragments of plants, animals, and debris on the outside of vessels before leaving the launch (this applies to invasive and native species). 2.Drain water out of the boat motor, bilge, live wells, ballast tanks

and bags, storage compartments, bait buckets, and other water equipment before leaving the launch area. (Canoes, kayaks, and other non‐ motorized boats need to be drained, too!) 3.Open/remove drain pl u gs a n d ke e p t h e m open while trailering (if the vessel is equipped with drain plugs—a wrench may be needed to open/remove plugs). It is best for boaters to drain boats and open/ remove drain plugs in a location where the water will not flow directly into nearby waterbodies. Please avoid draining any kind of boat while on the ramp incline itself. And, to provide our waters with the most protection from invasive species, if you don’t have five days to let your boat dry before launching it again, thoroughly rinse the hull off with clean water (hot, high pressure water is best), and dry it off with a towel. By always arriving at the next boat launch with your boat, trailer, and gear cleaned, drained, and dry, and with all drain plugs open, you will help keep New Hampshire a boating paradise—and you won’t get in trouble with the law! Thank you and have a great summer out on our lakes and rivers! NH LAKES is the only statewide, member-supported nonprofit organization working to inspire the responsible care and use of all New Hampshire’s 1,000 lakes to keep them healthy for the benefit of current and future generations. the cheeks and sparkle in the eyes of lovers of this sport.” In 1926 the Gale Memorial Park was a new one, built around the library building with walks on the spacious grounds which were surrounded with shrubbery and flower beds and featuring an artificial pond with a fountain that was electrically lighted. The pond was home to two Florida alligators. Yes, alligators. The other parks mentioned were Leavitt Park, Interlaken Park, and Endicott Rock Park. The rotogravure edition emphasized the opportunities for enjoyment offered by the lakes in the area, especially Lake Winnipesaukee and Lake Winnisquam. The Weirs was presented as the most popular resort on Winnipesaukee with entertainment provided by boat races featuring some of the fastest boats in New England, and rides available on “the historic steamer Mt. Washington, or the U.S. Mail boat.” Visitors could reach The Weirs by railroad, bus,or lake steamer. Winnipesaukee’s more than 300 islands were promoted as being ideal locations for summer homes, while those islands and the lake’s shoreline were said to abound with boy’s and girl’s camps. Those seeking other types of recreation in 1926 did find that there were other choices. Golf was available at The Laconia Country Club with an 18 hole course that was “one of the finest in the country” with a view of the lakes and located only about a mile from the Lakeport Post Office. If you weren’t interested in golf there were plenty of places you could hike, including the Belknap Mountain Range, with Mt. Belknap and Mt. Gunstock, being the favorite choices. Thousands of fishermen were reportedly attracted to the area at all seasons of the year to fish the lakes and streams. This sport was not limited to warm weather days because icefishing was popular during the winter with Lake Winnisquam becoming home to so many “bob houses” that it was sometimes referred

25 The welcome was also extended to the manufacturer, the craftsman, the agriculturist, and to parents seeking an ideal community in which to bring up their children, insisting that “all will find the City on the Lakes a most excellent place in which to LIVE.”

to as Ward VII of Laconia. Though maybe not in the photogravure, a fiddling contest was held at the James R. Irwin Winnipesaukee Gardens in the Weirs in the summer of 1926 with Felix Clement of Laconia being the winner of the first gold medal as the champion for New Hampshire. The crowd at the Gardens enjoyed performances by other fiddlers and participating in square dances. People came from rural areas from miles around to attend the event and it was said that for the first time that twelve horse-drawn carriages had been parked in the area in front of the depot that was reserved for automobiles. The photogravure presented many reasons why

Laconia was a good place to live, saying, “It is essentially a city of homes, surrounded by great natural playgrounds, and its convenience to beaches and mountains offers the countless recreational advantages of both. Within a radius of one hundred miles one can reach by automobile practically every beach and mountain resort in three states…”. Additionally “The city is remarkably free from crime and vice, a recent Government survey having established the fact that fewer crimes are committed in New Hampshire than in any other state in the Union.” It was pointed out that Laconia was on the main line of the Boston and Maine Railroad between Boston

and Montreal with good and frequent train service, that the educational system was good and that the high school facilities included a fine gymnasium, and that a complete and modern hospital with specialists on its staff served Laconia and surrounding communities. The rural and farming aspects of the area were emphasized, presenting the area as one that produced a variety of farm products and offered promising opportunities for anyone interested in agricultural pursuits, while stating that Belknap County had 1,361 farms. The 1926 photogravure extended “…a cordial welcome to the vacationist, whether he be seeking rest and health or recreation.”

Leave Fawns And Other Young Wildlife Alone Wildlife has begun giving birth around the state, with the majority of deer fawns in New Hampshire being born in May and June. Each spring, many New Hampshire residents see young wildlife by themselves and fear the worst. Has the mother died? Has she abandoned her baby? The answer in most cases is NO. The mother is likely not far off, waiting to return to feed her newborn. Unfortunately, well-intentioned, but misguided, individuals see young alone, assume they are abandoned, and take them in to “help” them. Most of the time, they are removing the young from the care of its mother, who was waiting to return. The best chance a young wild animal has to survive is in its natural environment under the care of its mother. If you see a fawn or any other young wildlife and suspect it has been abandoned or orphaned, do not

move the animal. Contact N.H. Fish and Game Dispatch at (603) 271-3361, e-mail dispatch@wildlife@ nh.gov, or our Wildlife Division at (603) 271-2461, e-mail wildlife@wildlife. nh.gov to make a report. Fish and Game staff can assess the situation and help determine the best course of action. In most cases it is best to leave the young alone and allow time for the mother to return to move it to a different location. Adult deer can be detected easily by predators due

was “Spinach” Greene, whose first name was George. He picked up the name “Spinach” partly because of his full beard and partly because he sold vegetables to summer residents of the islands. Even though Spinach worked on the lake, he did not know how to swim and refused to wear a life jacket. The life jackets of that time where bulky cork or kapok filled and hindered his movement. As a very poor second attempt at safety he dragged a long rope in back of his boat. This was intended as something he could grab hold of in case he fell in. Imagine falling overboard near Bear Island with the boat headed towards Parker Island and beyond. Hopefully, he had a snorkel tied to the rope as well. (As a side note on falling overboard, many bodies of men that were found in the lake had their fly open…apparently having fallen overboard while relieving themselves standing precariously on the gunwale or deck.) As time moved on acetylene lamps came into use on the light buoys. The first one being placed by Little Mark Island at the mouth of Alton Bay. The light was reported to be seen from five miles away. After acetylene came 12 volt dry cell battery lights with batteries wired in

Copies of the 1911 Lake Winnipesaukee chart are available at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum located next to Funspot. The unusual aspect of this map is that south is at the top of the page. In researching this story I discovered a map of Lake Winnipesaukee dated 1858. The map measures 65 inches by 42 inches and shows various steamboat routes but no buoy system. The entire map is done with amazing accuracy. It is labeled “Lake Winnipisseogee, Long Bay and Smith’s Pond.” Wm.P. Crocker, Civil Engineer is credited on the map. In 1986 the map was appraised at between $1500 and $2000. The map can be viewed at the New Hampshire State Archives under record MD3, F7. So, what did the early boat captains use to guide them around the lake? They steered by

referencing various land masses and the silhouettes of those points as well as the islands as reference points. One can only imagine how much time was spent in those days to be able to find acceptable routes and then commit them to memory. The first buoys were made from hemlock and were either 8’ or 16’ long and where held in place by a single cement block chained to the bottom of the buoy. The short ones where used in shallow water and the long ones used in deep water. Although they were painted, after a couple years the wood became water logged and the buoys would start to sink. The old buoy would be reSee lacey on 31

placed with a new one and stored in a rack to dry out for a year, then scraped and painted and put back in service. There were other challenges as well with the wooden buoys. Replacing them was the task of the Marine Patrol officers, who would occasionally end up with back problems as a result of handling the cumbersome long pieces of wood. The Weirs Channel was marked with pilings that were similar in size to telephone poles and were pounded into the lake bottom by a pile driver on a barge. As the ice would start to move during the spring thaw, some of the pilings would be pushed over or sometimes taken out completely and need to be replaced. The movement of the spring ice would also relocate some of the buoys that were still tightly frozen in the ice. As time went on and snow machines started to use the frozen lake, severe accidents could occur when a snow mobile would hit a wooden buoy that was partially obscured by snow drifts. It was not unusual for

both the rider and the machine to be incapacitated to the point of needing to be rescued. The transition from wood to plastic buoys took place in the mid 1990’s and provided many benefits. The buoys had internal flotation, required no maintenance and would break fairly easily if hit by a boat or snow mobile causing much less damage. Springtime ice movement was not an issue in relocating the markers

because the March sun would warm them up just enough to melt the ice that had been holding the buoys allowing them to slide under the ice and not be relocated. Light buoys are removed from the lake in the fall.

For years, the Pier was owned by George Abdullah who passed away in 2014. The main attractions were an arcade and

Anthony’s Restaurant as well as a series of small shops on the boardwalk catering to the summer crowd. A gas dock and waterfront marina were also longtime occupants. The Abdullah’s had been looking to sell the Pier for about the last seven years. Dan Lemieux, owner of East Coast Flightcraft and his stepson, Ryan Cardella,

had been interested in the property for the last few years. “It wasn’t until the business that had rented and run the docks decided to close that we saw the opportunity to purchase the property so it would work for us,” said Cardella. dollars. East Coast FlightCraft of New England began in 1987 when Dan Lemieux, and avid skier, went to Australia and found this boat called the Flightcraft. He eventually brought some of them to the states and sold some to his friends and eventually started the business. Today, besides their original location in Middleton, Mass, they also have a location in Connecticut and one in Meredith, NH, that they opened eleven years ago. (They also sell out of Goodhue Hawkins Marina in Wolfeboro.) Some initial rumors were that the Pier would be torn down or simply turned into a boat dealership and rental place, but nothing could really be further from the truth. The plan is for a significant financial investment to bring the Pier to a vibrant life once again. Y es, there will be a dealership and boat rentals, but they will only be a miniscule part of the new life for the Pier. “We want to have something for everyone here,” said Cardella recalling his own visits to the Weirs as a young boy. “We wanted to keep what the people wanted, the reason they have been coming down here for all these years. Just making it a boat dealership would not have served the community the way it should.” The history of the Pier and Irwin’s played heavi l y o n the renovation process. “We want it to look like people remember,” said Cardella who also emphasized that it will be up to the people as to where they take the project. “We will clean it up and say to people, ‘here it is, a blank canvas what do you want to see’ and then in five years from now we will begin an even bigger overhaul as we will know what will work best for the community.” The cleanup is in full

There will also be a lounge area available to those renting boats and other equipment for the day. “There really will be something for everyone here,” said Cardella. “It

are the walleye that call the river home. Walleye are not only delicious, but very fun to catch. The river is also home to trophy smallmouth bass, black crappie, and trout in some areas. The most well-known section of the river for trophy northern pike is the section known as Moore Reservoir. While the potential for giant pike is there, kayak anglers should realize that it is a big body of water and pike fishing there is not a numbers game. For better numbers of fish with the chance at a trophy, many anglers choose the section of the river from Orford south to Hinsdale. This is also where you’re likely to run into a walleye or two. There are hundreds of water bodies throughout New Hampshire that offer kayak fishing opportunities for a multitude of different species. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department offers depth maps on their website that also list the known species in that water as well as

the launch type and location. Just remember to use good launch etiquette when launching and landing. Load and unload as quickly as pos-

Day 3 – Blood Alone, A Billy Boyle WWII Mystery by James R. Benn, Soho Press, 2008. Time for a little history with your mystery or vice versa. Lt. Billy Boyle, special investigator attached to General Eisenhower, Billy’s “Uncle Ike,” wakes up in a field hospital in Sicily without his memory. He can’t recall his name or his assignment, and he’s up against the environmental protesters, and running for her life and the baby’s? Day 6 – The Mother Hunt – A Nero Wolfe

Mafia as well as the German and Italian armies. Operating on instinct and a slowly recovering memory Billy sets out to complete his mission and figure out who and what he really is.

Day 7 – The Wolfe Widow: A Book Collectors Mystery, Victoria Abbott, Berkley, 2014. Jordan Bingham prefers her job as a book researcher for the tyrannical Vera Van Alst to her family’s less than scrupulous business, but when a stranger moves into the Van Alst mansion and Jordan gets the boot she calls on her family for help before someone - maybe Jordan herself - gets killed.

Day 4 – A Rule Against Murder: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel, Louise Penny, Minotaur, 2008. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his wife Reine Marie are celebrating their anniversary at an exclusive and remote inn in Quebec. They didn’t anticipate spending their holiday with a family seething with anger and resentment for each other or with a murderer. Mystery, Rex Stout, Viking Press, 1963. Lucy Valdon finds a baby in her vestibule so she turns to Nero Wolfe, the best detective north of the South Pole and his brilliant lieutenant, Archie Goodwin, for help. She wants Wolfe and Archie to find the mother and that search turns out to be one of Wolfe’s and Archie’s longest investigations. It will take all their skill and savvy to find the mother and to trap a killer.

Day 8 – Paradise CityA Joe Gunther Novel by Archer Mayor, Minotaur, 2012. Joe Gunther and his team at the Vermont Bureau of Investigation, Brattleboro have been dealing with a series of burglaries, so have their

counterparts 50 miles south in Northampton, MA and 100 miles west in Boston. It appears that Northampton might not be Paradise after all when jewels aren’t the only things that Joe finds hidden in the city. Day 9 – Dead Sand: A Lewis Cole Mystery by Brendan Dubois, Otto Penzler Books, 1994. You can stay put lakeside in your Adirondack chair and still visit New Hampshire’s seacoast. Lewis Cole used to work for the government, now he’s returned home to the New Hampshire coast where he writes for a magazine, occasionally, but spends a good deal of his time probing local corruption and criminality. The ostensible suicide of a young waitress and the body of a murder victim from 40 years ago are almost more than Lewis can handle. Day 10 – And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, Dodd Mead, 1940. Agatha Christie’s masterpiece puts ten strangers together in an old mansion on a remote island. Each one has a secret, each one is accused of murder, and no one may get off the island alive.
