COMPLIMENTARY

A Note To Our Readers

We would like to direct your attention this week to our Letters To The Mailboat on page 4. Don Ewing of Meredith writes concerning President Obama’s recent Executive Action on firearms purchases and his lack of will in addressing, or maybe just merely ignoring, myriad other issues that are the reasons for gun violence. Instead, the president obsesses on expanded background checks as the solution.

“A gun, like any other source of power, is a force for either good or evil, being neither in itself, but dependent upon those who possess it.” —Quote from the prologue of the 1950 movie “Colt .45”

Ethan Hipple, Wolfeboro’s Director of Parks and Recreation, stands in front of the brand new ski lodge at the Abenaki Ski Area. With the efforts of the Friends of Abenaki, the Ski Area, now in its 80th season and known as the oldest small ski area in the country, has been thriving as of late necessitating the need for the new lodge to replace the original built in 1940. brendan smith Photo

Turning Eighty With A Brand New Look Abenaki Ski Area Opens For 2016 With New Lodge

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Known as the “oldest small ski area in the country” the Abenaki Ski Area in Wolfeboro is beginning its 80th year with a new look and a growing popularity. In an era where many town run ski areas have

gone the way of the wooden ski, Abenaki is looking forward to future growth with the recent grand opening of its new ski lodge. (In 2014, Powder magazine called Abenaki “The Most Important Ski Area in America” using it as a shining example of the resurgence of small ski

areas in the country.) “We went from 900 skier visits a season to 7,700 last year,” said Wolfeboro’s Director of Parks and Recreation, Ethan Hipple. “Most of the credit for that goes to the Friends of Abenaki.” The Friends are a group of locals who

got together in 2005 when there were questions among the Wolfeboro Budget Committee about whether or not it was worth keeping the, five trail, 210 vertical foot, ski area open. The ski area had been open on and off over the years depending on the See abenaki on 24

We agree fully with Mr. Ewing’s viewpoint and would like to also address the unconstitutionality of the President’s actions in changing existing laws without the approval of Congress. Congress makes laws and the President enforces them, this is the way our democracy is supposed to work, like it or not. If the method of how guns sales occur is to be changed then it needs to be done by the letter of the law and our system of government, not by one man to satisfy his own agenda. As Mr. Ewing points out, by ignoring other pressing issues related to gun violence and focusing merely on making it more difficult for lawful citizens to buy or sell guns, then the problem will continue unheeded, setting the stage for even more unconstitutional actions by this eager president or possibly the next, whoever that may be.

Snowshoe Men At Wentworth House In Rollinsford Meet a company of men portraying veteran snowshoe soldiers who patrolled the New England frontier during the mid-18th century during a weekend of living history on January 16 and 17. Members of Captain John Harmon’s Snowshoe Company of Rangers will be in residence at the historic Colonel Paul Wentworth House in Rollinsford, NH and will demonstrate the use of flintlock muskets and traditional snowshoes, plus the clothing, equipment and tactics used by the frontier militia in the 1750s. Snowshoe companies were formed to patrol New England’s harsh frontier during the long winters and protect the northern settlements from attack by the French and their Native American allies during the border wars of the mid-1700s. The New England “ranging” companies served a vital role during the French and Indian War. The public is invited to meet the snowshoe men on Saturday, January 16 from noon to 4 pm and again on Sunday, January 17 from 10 am to 3 pm. Costumed interpreters will also demonstrate 18th century hearth cooking, crafts, board games and other recreational activities, and other aspects of winter life in colonial New England. For more information about this and other events at the Wentworth House, consult the ARCH website at paulwentworthhouse.org or on Facebook at The Colonel Paul Wentworth House.

Gun Control Proposal Failure To The Editor: President Obama deserves an Oscar for his performance in his “Common Sense Gun Safety production. He said the right things, sounded sincere and caring, and teared up appropriately. Unfortunately his gun control proposals fail to address the overwhelming majority of gun violence: criminals, gangs, and terrorists. His proposals will primarily make legal gun ownership and protection of innocent people more difficult. President Obama says, “We know that we can’t stop every act of violence. But what if we tried to stop even one? He could enforce our existing immigration laws and prevent the 400-500 killings and hundreds of thousands of rapes, robberies, muggings, other crimes and harmful accidents committed by illegal aliens annually. He could end sanctuary cities. But, President Obama isn’t enforcing these laws and has been releasing, not deporting, violent criminal illegal aliens; President Obama isn’t interested in saving the lives taken by illegal aliens. Did President Obama propose increasing the punishments for criminal usage of guns, stricter law enforcement to keep violent gang members and criminals locked up, or more effective anti-drug efforts since a large percent of gun violence is drug related? No.

Our Story

Almost all public mass shootings have been in “gun free zones. Did President Obama propose ending “gun free zones to take the bullseyes off defenseless children in their schools and allow people to try to defend themselves from criminals or terrorists? No. Did President Obama propose withholding the names of mass killers to deprive them of the notoriety they crave? No. President Obama proposed some restrictions on gun ownership by mentally ill people, but those restrictions may cost more lives than they save. Many mass murderers were taking psychiatric drugs, but most people taking those drugs don’t commit crimes. And, President Obama’s proposals go far beyond restricting the rights of violent mentally ill people, to restricting the rights of millions of the elderly, former soldiers, and others who don’t threaten anyone. President Obama didn’t say how his proposals would have prevented any past crimes. Since his proposals didn’t address the sources of almost all gun violence, despite his theatrics it seems his proposals aren’t intended to reduce gun violence. His proposals seem designed to fail because failure can be used as justification for further gun controls. The more important goal of leftists like President Obama is to disarm all law abiding citizens, not to save innocent lives. President Obama’s speech and proposals disappointed knowledgeable

people who actually want reduced gun violence and innocent lives saved. His use of murdered children as props to further the leftists’ goal of eliminating Americans’ Second Amendment rights is shameful; and President Obama should be condemned for it Donald Ewing Meredith, NH.

Stop Wasting And Fix Roads To the Editor: The foundation of the new tax proposed by Representatives Norman Major, John Cloutier, and David Watters is to penalize those NH citizens who are not buying enough gasoline. Buying more gasoline pays more gas tax towards support of the state’s crumbling transportation infrastructure. But to specifically and exclusively target fuel efficient vehicles for new revenue through a so-called road usage fee is twisted governance at its unjust worst. Please rethink this absurd government enticement to abandon fuel efficiency and have the guts to find the funds through reduction of government waste. Recent examples of such waste are the $millions spent to promote casinos, or the hundreds of thousands to come up with a new UNH logo. Very very bad government. Stop wasting our money and you’ll have plenty to fix the roads. David M. Zebuhr Gilford, NH.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Thinking Big

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Like many of you, I have my dreams; visions of a different life that can only be fulfilled by winning over half a billion dollars. No, ten million, twenty million‌even a hundred million dollars couldn’t get me motivated enough to have to drive to the convenience store, park my car, get out, walk inside and wait maybe a minute or two for my turn to buy a ticket; I have other things to do, You see, there are things I can do with a over a billion dollars that I could never do with one hundred million, never mind a measly ten million. This has been my goal for years now. To settle on the dreams that come with a mere hundred million would really be a disappointment to me. I read a self help book years ago informing me that the only way to truly get what you want is to constantly think specific thoughts and never let those thoughts diminish. So, I have been thinking hard for years about winning over half a billion dollars. Since I read that book I have been saying to myself daily, usually right before falling off to sleep and first thing upon waking up in the morning: “This year I will win over half a billion dollars by stopping at a convenience store on the way home from work, standing in a short line (notice I said short, that

is an important feature in vocalizing my desire as it gives me plenty of time for television the rest of the evening) then bringing the tickets home and waiting for my numbers to be drawn. I figure that I am most likely the only person in the forty-four states that are involved in Powerball who is phrasing this desire in exactly this way, separating my unique thoughts out for the universe to grab onto and to give me exactly what it is I want. You have to remember that a Powerball jackpot getting to over half a billion dollars doesn’t happen often and that is to my advantage when it comes to competing against others in the positive thinking area. Most people spend their time just before bed and upon arising repeating the very generic: “I am going to go to the convenience store after work, get out of my car, wait in line and buy a Powerball ticket which I will win. This is ineffective on so many levels. First, you are not specifying the specific jackpot amount you will win and when, so it may be years from now until you win and, secondly, it might only be a jackpot for a hundred million or, worse, only ten million. Thirdly, you didn’t designate a short time in the convenience store line so you may end up there longer than you think and possibly miss part of “The Bachelor before the first commercial break. My way is much more than just thinking positively. It is thinking correctly. I am being specific on the exact outcome and the amount I am going to win and all of the steps that it will take to do that, while also making sure the rest of my trivial pursuits also fall into line.

Also, with my positive thinking in proper perspective, I don’t have to foolishly waste my time chasing after insignificant Powerball prizes of only a few tens of millions, but I wait until the Universe goes out of its way to listen to my consistent nagging and lets the Powerball jackpot grow to my specifications; it is then that I strike. This week was the time and I was ready. I watched and I waited and I never gave up on my daily affirmations of what my exact success would be. As the Powerball creeped over half a billion dollars, I smiled. I knew it was mine. I left work, found a parking space near the door at the local convenience store (another aspect I focused on) had only one other person in line in front of me and then I bought my single ticket; I knew it would be all I’d need. I went home and slept peacefully, knowing when I awoke my wishes would be horses and I would be flying high. I didn’t win. At first I was disappointed and angry with the universe, but as I thought about it the rest of the day I came to realize that I wasn’t quite specific enough in my affirmations. Besides all of my work in daily thinking, I realized I never put a specific date on my goals of winning over half a billion dollars. Lesson learned. So, today, I begin again with new affirmations and a new hope. The next Powerball jackpot that is over half a billion will be mine. Of that I have no doubt. I’m just sorry now that I didn’t focus on over a billion. Visit Brendan’s website at www.BrendanTSmith.com

Inside the Garden of Political Town Hall Plants

On Thursday, CNN will host a town hall with President Obama as part of his “final-year push to make gun control part by Michelle Malkin of his legacy.” In addition to Syndicated Columnist sitting down with liberal anchor Anderson Cooper, the network says Obama will “take questions from the audience.” Uh-oh. Get out your best pruning shears and trowels. In an age of micromanaged partisan stagecraft and left-wing media enablers, there is no such thing as a spontaneous question. CNN has a long history of allowing political plants to flourish in its public forums. At the cable station’s Democratic debate in Las Vegas in 2007, moderator Wolf Blitzer introduced several citizen questioners as “ordinary people, undecided voters.” But they later turned out to include a former Arkansas Democratic director of political affairs, the president of the Islamic Society of Nevada, and a far left anti-war activist who’d been quoted in newspapers lambasting Harry Reid for his failure to pull out of Iraq. At a CNN/YouTube GOP debate two weeks later, the everyday, “undecided voters” whose questions were chosen included: --A member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transexual Americans For Hillary Clinton Steering Committee. --A young woman named “Journey” who questioned the candidates on abortion and whom CNN failed to properly identify as an outspoken John Edwards supporter.

--A supposed “Log Cabin Republican” who had declared his support for Obama on an Obama ‘08 campaign blog. --A supposedly unaffiliated “concerned mother” who was actually a staffer and prominent Pittsburgh union activist for the United Steelworkers -- which had endorsed Edwards for president. --A supposed “undecided” voter who urged Ron Paul to run as an independent, but who had already publicly declared his support for former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson’s Democratic presidential bid. --A staffer for Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.; a former intern for Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., and a former intern for the Council on American-Islamic Relations Once a manipulative gardener, always a manipulative gardener. During the push for Obamacare, Democrat plants spread like kudzu across town hall propaganda events. At White House “citizen town halls” in 2009, Team Obama hand-picked notso-random “random” questioners who included: --An operative for the Washington, D.C.-based Health Care for America Now, the K Street Astroturf outfit with a $40 million budget to lobby for governmentrun health care that directed its activists to “drown out” opponents at town hall meetings. --An “unemployed” cancer patient who was actually working for the DNC’s Organizing for America and the Virginia Organizing Project, which coordinated lobbying trips and health care forums with HCAN. --A Democrat National Committee member and community blogger at Organizing for America. --The 11-year-old daughter of a coordinator of Massachusetts Women for Obama who had do-

A Call for Courageous Conservatives

Those of you who read my little column each week, know I am an unabashed Conservative. Although I came to the political by Jane Cormier s p h e r e o n l y 5 Hooksett, NH. years ago, I truly enjoy bringing the tenants of conservatism to current political challenges and concerns. I believe it is only Conservatism which can restore America back to that “shining city on the hill”. Having previously served in the NH State House from 2012 2014 and then throwing my hat into a NH State Senate race in 2014, I am quite content to now be on “the outside”. There is a tremendous freedom knowing I do not have to be concerned what political pundits might say. Indeed, I thrive on knowing I can throw political correctness out the window, which is exactly See malkin on 26 where it belongs!

This being said, although I am no longer in elected office, I am still active in our Granite State on issues of life and small government. I am also quite excited to be part of the “Cruz for President” team here in New Hampshire. I first met Senator Cruz well before he declared himself a candidate for the Presidency. I had been reading about his rallying to end Obamacare and decided to see for myself if all the glowing rhetoric would stand up to my test of Conservatism. The NH GOP was holding an event with Sen. Cruz as the guest speaker, so, I went by myself to see what all the talk was about. I am very glad I did! Sen. Cruz spoke for about 40 minutes with no notes, no teleprompters, no hyperbole – just words spoken straight from the heart. And, after the event, even though he was tired and pursued by members of the audience, he took the time to speak with me See cormier on 26

Pyongyang’s Predictable Unpredictability UNITED NATIONS - Not one week into the New Year, the North Koreans jolted global concerns as well as the Richter scale with a nuclear by John J. Metzler weapons test. Syndicated Columnist While the underground blast shook the remote Punggyeri region near the Russian border, the political reverberations of the bomb have been felt from East Asia to the United Nations on the East River. Only days after North Korean’s unpredictable dictator, Kim Jong-un, delivered a fairly conciliatory New Year’s message, the leader then gave the orders for what was deemed to be a Hydrogen Bomb test. Seoul’s respected Korea Times opined, “Ever unpredictable, North Korea surprised the world again.” Putting it another way, with Pyongyang, expect the unexpected. Whether the weapon was a Hydrogen or smaller nuclear weapon, the fact remains that the defiant “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)” has thrust itself into the headlines. The international community, most especially South Korea, Japan and the United States roundly condemned the move, as did even North Korea’s erstwhile ally the People’s Republic of China. UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon, himself a South Korean,

stated, “This act is profoundly destabilizing for regional security and seriously undermines international non-proliferation efforts. I condemn it unequivocally.” Ban demanded that the DPRK cease further nuclear activities. The UN Security Council met in emergency session and “strongly condemned” the test which is in serious violation of a number of resolutions. Given the gravity of the situation, the Council will begin work on a new resolution which would likely tighten sanctions on the DPRK. Importantly, as Japan has assumed its seat for a two year term, the Council may have extra impetus for serious sanctions action in response to Pyongyang’s recklessness. Japan’s UN Ambassador Motohide Yoshikawa, called for a swift and robust new UN resolution. Even China “firmly opposes,” the latest nuclear test. While originally indulging and enabling its communist comrade, in recent years Beijing has become decidedly nervous about North Korea being a loose cannon. Nuclear weapons tests are destabilizing and nowhere more so than to neighboring Mainland China where the economic downturn does not need a negative downdraft of unpredictability and crisis. Beijing knows this is bad for business and wider stability. This is the fourth North Korean nuclear test since 2006; the DPRK holds the dubious distinction as being the only country to have tested

nuclear weapons this century. The DPRK’s bizarre Marxist Monarchy has taken a dangerous new turn; while the communist regime founder Great Leader Kim Il-sung and his mercurial son Kim Jong-il were thoroughly ruthless

but predictable, to the contrary, Kim Jong-un, who assumed leadership in 2012, appears far more reckless. Back in May-June 1994 when the world faced the first major

Showman In Chief Those who have been marveling at Donald Trump’s political showmanship were given a reminder of who is the top showman of them all, by Thomas Sowell when PresiSyndicated Columnist dent Barack Obama went on television to make a pitch for his unilateral actions to restrict gun sales and make a more general case for tighter gun control laws. It was beautifully choreographed, like a great ballet, and performed with consummate skill and understated eloquence. First of all, the scene was set with a room full of people who had lost loved ones to gun violence. A father whose son had been gunned down made a long introduction before the president showed up, walked down the aisle and up on to the stage to growing applause. As political theater, it put Donald Trump’s rantings in the shade. As for the substance of what Obama said, there was very little substance, and much of it false, but one of the signs of great artistry was that the presentation overshadowed the substance. None of the things proposed by the president is likely to reduce gun violence. Like other restrictions on people’s ability to defend themselves, or to deter attacks by showing that they are armed, these new restrictions can cost more lives on net balance. The most we can hope for is that the effects of the new Obama-created rules will be nil, rather than harmful. Like most other gun con-

trol advocates, President Obama invoked scenes of mass shootings, as if what he is proposing would have prevented those tragedies. But, almost invariably, mass shootings occur in gun-free settings. Yet gun control zealots seem determined to create more gun-free settings. How often have supposedly mentally unbalanced shooters opened fire at a meeting of the National Rifle Association? They are apparently not that mentally unbalanced. They pick places where people are not likely to shoot back. A mass shooting at a movie theater a few years ago took place at a theater farther away from where the shooter lived than other theaters in the area that were showing the very same movie. The difference was that this theater had advertised that it was a gun-free zone. Who is more mentally unbalanced, those who are doing the shooting or those who refuse to examine the facts about what kinds of places attract such shooters? Schools and religious institutions are sitting ducks, and the shootings there have gone on until someone else with a gun showed up on the scene. That is what puts an end to the carnage, not gun control laws. People who are prepared to defy the laws against murder are not very likely to be stopped by laws against guns. Only lawabiding citizens are likely to be stopped by gun control laws, and to become sitting ducks. As for facts and statistics, the only ones likely to be mentioned by gun control zealots, including the media, are those on how many people were killed by guns. How many lives were saved by guns will never make it through the ideological filters See Sowell on 28

Healthy Tip From Dr. Fink: Depression

Fink Chiropractic & Natural Health Improvement Center

In 2014 we lost Robin Williams, a talented actor and comedian. Many of us were shocked and surprised to learn that Robin suffered from depression. During the Holidays most of us enjoy family gatherings and special moments with friends and loved ones. However, there are many out there who become sad and depressed through the Holidays. Here are some thoughts and ideas to consider if you or a family member suffers with depression. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), “when feelings such as hopelessness, being discouraged or unmotivated, or general disinterest in life lasts for more than two weeks and begins to interfere with daily activities at home or in the workplace, it should be considered a major depressive episode. Some warning signs may include lack of pleasure in everyday activities, withdrawal from others, irritability, fatigue, appetite or weight changes and sleep changes. According to Dr. Adrian Lopresti, MD, a clinical psychologist from Australia who specializes in treating adults and children with depression and anxiety, “there is no wellaccepted medical test for depression. The best way to assess depression is through interview and questionnaires. She also recommends a battery of blood tests measuring things like folic acid,

iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin D which can all affect mood, and tests to examine blood sugar levels, sex hormones and inflammation. “Diet is often a neglected area in depression treatment says Dr. Lopresti. “Our brain chemicals (neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which facilitates learning and memory) can be influenced by diet. For example serotonin is created from protein. For the body to manufacture serotonin we require several vitamins and minerals such as folic acid and Vitamin B6. If we are deficient in any of these nutrients our serotonin levels are adversely affected and mood worsens. What we eat can also influence levels of inflammation, oxidative stress and neurogenesis, which again are all associated with depression. Many of us overindulge in sweets during the holidays which can contribute to highs and lows. Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, points to the importance of magnesium in the diet. She states in her book ‘the magnesium miracle’, “A magnesium deficiency magnifies depression and stress. Serotonin the feel good brain chemical (neurotransmitter), depends on magnesium for its production and function. Some alternative therapies may include meditation, massage therapy, yoga, and even chiropractic and acupuncture. According to Dr. Lopresti, “All treatments for depression should be multifaceted. Antidepressants (either natural or pharmaceutical) should form only a part of treatment.

Other interventions may be beneficial or essential. These include consuming a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, good sleep patterns, learning effective coping skills, engaging in pleasurable activities and having a life purpose. Even if you have health insurance the cost of many of these tests and treatments may not be an option for you. However, you can take your health into your own hands and take steps to prevent depression as well as other threats to your good health. We carry a full line of Whole Food Supplements that feed your body important nutrients so it can work more efficiently. I would be happy to recommend a nutritional plan for you as well as to assist with your Chiropractic needs. game last Sunday made for extremely uncomfortable conditions for players and attendees at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, but it was fun viewing for fans watching in the comfort of their living rooms. Thank heavens the Vikings weren’t playing indoors at the old Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. We wouldn’t have been able to see their frosty breaths or listen to commentators discuss how the cold was affecting the contest. Indoor gridiron games truly lack something primal, elemental, and essential. Football needs real grass, wind and rain, snow and mud. Yes, I love watching football games where the elements are part of the story. Preferably snow, ice, sleet, and mud. Yes, I loved watching the Ice Bowl, where in 1967 the host Green Bay Packers beat the shivering Dallas Cowboys 21-17 for the NFL title. The temperature was 17 degrees below zero. An even colder game, if you factor in the wind, was the San Diego at Cincinnati playoff game in January, 1982. Wind chill made it feel like 30 below zero. (The Bengals won to advance to the Super Bowl.) You have to love snow. Like in 1982, when the Dolphins and Patriots were tied at 0-0 with less

than five minutes to play in a Foxboro snowstorm. During a time-out before a field goal attempt, a stadium snowplow operator named Mark Henderson drove on to the snowy field to clear the area where John Smith’s kick would be spotted. The kick was good and the Pats won 3-0. Miami coach Don Shula is still mad about it, but the little snow plow/ ploy holds a place of honor in Foxboro. My favorite New England game of all time remains the Foxboro Stadium finale in January of 2002, when the Pats won a playoff game against Oakland. That was the Tom Brady “tuck” game, but what I really remember is all the snow, and Adam Vinatiari’s successful 45yard field goal through the swirling flakes to send things to overtime. Bring on foul football weather, especially for the playoffs. How about a soggy Super Bowl? SB 50 goes on Feb. 7 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Now while baseball’s Dodgers, Padres, and Angels are never rained out, it DOES rain in California in the winter. I’ve always longed for a Super Bowl where there is mud and rain. Let the heavens release downpours on the halftime show, which this year ironically features the British rock band COLDPLAY. Perfect!

(Prediction: The Patriots win the first-ever overtime Super Bowl game when Stephen Gostkowski kicks a 40-yard field goal in the rain.) Soccer is played in all sorts of weather, especially high school championship matches, which invariably occur under freezing November skies. But for some reason baseball games just don’t happen if it rains. What’s up with that? Unlike soccer players, baseball players wear extra clothes and even caps—but when the rain starts, the umpire departs. Sissies. Hockey is generally an indoor sport, but the recent Winter Classics have been immensely popular. Sixty-eight thousand fans showed up at Gillette Stadium to see an outdoor contest between les Canadiens and the Bruins. Unfortunately, Montreal prevailed 4-1. If only there would have been a blizzard. How fun that would have been— maybe even for the fans in attendance. Occasionally an indoor hockey game WILL be held up due to foggy conditions, which is cool. Now as a basketball guy, I must admit that I pretty much avoided rain and mud while playing hoop. C’est la vie. But a proSee moffett on 30

Time for Some New Year’s (Financial) Resolutions If you’re like many people, you might be mulling over some New Year’s resolutions, such as hitting the gym more, learning a new language or taking a cooking class. All are worthy goals, but why not add some financial resolutions as well? For example … … Pay yourself first. Even if you aren’t living “paycheck to paycheck,” you probably don’t have much trouble spending your money – because there’s always something that you or a family member needs, always a repair required for your home or your car, always one more bill to pay. But if you are going to achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you need to invest consistently. So before you pay everyone else, pay yourself first by having some money automatically moved from your checking or savings account each month into an investment. … Take advantage of your opportunities. If you have a 401(k) or similar plan at work, take full advantage of it. Contribute as much as you can afford – or at least enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered – and choose the mix of investments that give you the potential to achieve the growth you need at a level of risk with which you are comfortable. … Focus on the long term. In the short term, you might be excused for not wanting to invest. The headlines are typically scary, the financial markets are frequently volatile and the future often looks murky. Yet, if you can look past the uncertainties of today and keep your focus on tomorrow, you will find it easier to follow a disciplined investment strategy that gives you the opportunity to meet your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement.

…. Don’t be driven by fear. When the market is down, investors tend to react with fear. Specifically, they rush to sell their investments, afraid that if they don’t “cut their losses,” they might sustain even bigger ones. If you can get past this feeling, you may find that a down market can offer you the chance to buy quality investments at good prices. … Forget about the “hot stocks.” You’ll hear friends, co-workers and talking heads on television tout today’s “hot stocks.” But by the time you might hear about them, they may have cooled off – and, in any case, they might not be appropriate for your needs. Forget about “getting rich quick in the market” – it probably won’t happen. True investment success requires patience and persistence. … Cut down on your debts. It’s easy to pile up debts, but a lot harder getting rid of them. Yet, if you can reduce your debt load even moderately, you’ll free up money you could use to invest. So look for ways to conserve, cut back and consolidate – it will be worth the effort. Making these resolutions – and sticking to them – can help you as you work toward achieving your financial goals. Past performance does not guarantee future results. Investors should understand the risks involved of owning investments, including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. The value of investments fluctuates and investors can lose some or all of their principal. Special risks are inherent to international investing, including those related to currency fluctuations and foreign political and economic events.. The Many Descendents Of Rev. Bachiler by Robert Hanford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

Many years ago my Dad let me know that in my background I had an ancestor who had been a minister of the gospel. His name was Stephen Bachiler. My Dad hinted that the man had a tarnished reputation but did not tell me the reason for it, leaving me with the uncertainty of mind as to whether this was a person from my family tree that I should not bother to mention to others. Since first hearing of Mr. Bachiler and, by seeing his name on my family tree, I have either been told or read of others with last names that are different than his or mine who claimed to be descendants of the reverend and were not hesitant to admit it. While still unsure if I should consider the man a sinner or a saint, I am convinced that there must be many ancestors of Stephen Bachiler who live in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire along with others throughout England, The United States, Canada, and the world. Rev. Stephen Bachiler was born in Wherwell, Hampshire, England in 1561 but came to New England in the year 1632 at the age of 70 or 71 and, though controversy seemed to follow him wherever he went, had a significant impact upon the new world. He is considered a principal founder of the town of Hampton which previously was called Winnacunnet and became the minister of the church. He is known as a proponent of the separation of church and state, being one of the reasons for the controversies that followed him. He was excommunicated from the church he pastored in England, an experience shared by many other Puritan preachers which led some of their group to seek religious

Bachiler came to New England in 1632 as a member of The Company of the Plough with the intention of being their minister. His first church in New England was established at Saugus (now Lynn) in Massachussetts, but apparently, because of his independent personality and willingness to defy the magistrates, his ministry there lasted only until 1635. The call to ministry was obviously an irrevocable one for Rev. Bachiler. He moved to Ipswich and in the winter of 1637-38 is said to have walked 100 miles to what is now Barnstable where he and others planned to found a plantation. The undertaking proved so difficult that they abandoned the whole idea. The venture at Hampton was more successful; however, once again, after seeing a meeting-house built with a bell he himself donated, and being granted 300 acres of land upon which he built himself a house, the seventy-eight year old preacher soon found himself once again a controversial figure. When he was eighty, charges of immorality were made

against him. He denied the charges, and tried to defend himself against his accusers, but was once more excommunicated from his church. The excommunication was later repealed. It should be noted that Rev. Bachiler had his supportSee smith on 30

Ask The Builder by Tim Carter

Syndicated Columnist

DEAR TIM: We have a problem with the front porch of our 44-year-old home. The outside corner of the poured concrete porch is curving up, lifting the post that’s supporting the roof. There’s no tree or roots that could be to blame. The brickwork under the porch that connects back to the house looks fine with no cracks. Gravity should be pulling the concrete down, not going up in the air. Every contractor we have talked with is clueless. What is going on? How did this happen? How could it have been prevented, and how do we repair it? --Sami B., Toledo, Ohio DEAR SAMI: I’m sorry you’re having this problem, and it’s a shame you can’t locate a knowledgeable contractor to tell you what’s going on. I was able to determine the cause of your problem in seconds after looking at the excellent photo you provided. You’re so right about gravity’s pull; that’s exactly what’s in play here. What you didn’t take into account is what you discovered in high school physics class about a

Your front porch slab probably has some reinforcing steel bars in it, and this monolithic slab is acting as a giant lever. The low brick wall under the slab is the fulcrum. Gravity is causing the slab to sink at the rear of the porch and move up at the front under the roofsupport post. I was able to tell all of this by looking at the photo. You can see clearly

that the back of the slab, where it touches the front wall of the house, has dropped. The edge of the slab is no longer parallel to the brick mortar joint, and you can see small traces of concrete from the slab that got onto the brick all those years ago when the house was built. dug out of the ground to install the foundation and used it to fill under the porch. The trouble with this practice is that soil gets fluffed up when you dig it. That introduces all sorts of air into the soil, and its volume increases. The soil should have been compacted before the slab was poured, although that’s not easy to do. There are special machines that can be used to do it, and on a small scale it’s labor intensive. It’s very common for substandard builders to cut corners like this. There were other ways to prevent this problem. Self-compacting fill could have been used, but the

builder has to buy this. Rounded pea gravel is a great example of this product. Concrete block piers could have been extended up from the house footer to support the slab. Poured concrete haunches could have been incorporated into the house foundation to support the slab. You have several options for fixing the problem -providing you have a specialty contractor in your city that can do the job. You could tear out the concrete porch and start over. This method guarantees that the porch slab will never drop a fraction of an inch, but it’s expensive. If you do this, you have to make sure the new slab will be held in place. You could dig down to the house foundation footer and extend 8-inch-diameter concrete or concrete block piers up to where the bottom of the new slab would be. If you do this every four feet on center, you’ll have created legs that the new slab will rest upon. This is not much different than how your dining room table stays floating in midair. You could also carefully remove every other brick under the row of brick that would start at the top of the new slab. The

concrete would flow into the void where each brick used to be. At this location you should also have a 5/8-inch steel bar that extends back into the void and out to the other side of the porch slab where it crosses the low brick wall. This steel rod needs to be surrounded with the new concrete; it prevents the new concrete slab from falling again under the influence of gravity. You could also create a mat of reinforcing steel within the slab with the steel rods parallel with the house 2 feet on center as they march toward the low brick wall under the porch-support posts. The concrete slab should be no less than 5 inches thick and be no less than 4,000-pounds-persquare-inch in strength. Be sure you put compacted fill on top of all the dirt that has settled under the new slab. Before adding the fill, water the dry dirt for a few days to encourage further settlement before adding the new fill. If you don’t want to remove the old slab, you could find a company that can lift the existing slab back into its original position. This may be a cheaper option, but there’s no guarantee the slab will stay in place. This work has been done for years in large industrial settings and at airports, where concrete slabs settle like yours for any number of reasons. These companies drill 2-inch-diameter holes into the slab back near the wall of your home. A slurry of Portland cement and fine sand is injected under significant pressure under the slab. As more and more slurry is pumped under the slab, as if by magic, the concrete slab starts to lift and float back into its original position. Once the slab is in place, the slurry under it hardens and all is well. The only problem is that if the fill under the slurry continues to settle, then the slab starts to drop once again. So you have to ask yourself a question (doing my best Clint Eastwood impersonation): Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?

INTRODUCING THE SQUIRREL SOLUTIONS™ SEED SAVER™200 The Wild Bird Feeder That Has Everything Birders Are Looking For... And More!!!

Keep Your Cardinals by Steve White Contributing Writer

The cardinal is relatively new to this area of New England. Prior to the popularity of backyard bird feeding, the northern most boundary of this brilliant red bird was the Connecticut and Rhode Island regions. As more homeowners enjoyed this hobby of feeding wild birds in the last two decades, attracting the cardinal has almost become an obsession. The chase was on. Just how do you keep this majestic bird in your area year round? Attracting cardinals to your backyard is not a difficult task if you have the right habitat to start with. Unfortunately, most backyards have eliminated the environment necessary for maintaining nesting cardinals. Cardinals are basically ground birds. They enjoy the comfort and safety that natural cover provides. Brambles, briar patches, and thickets are standard cardinal territory. You may witness cardinals singing from the tallest branches of trees, but for nesting purposes, this species prefers the lower levels of your area. Many people choose not to have these natural plantings in their backyard and may have a difficult, if not impossible, task of attracting northern cardinals. Nesting birds are feeding birds. The cardinal is very aggressive in defending its territory from other birds. They are extremely loyal as well. It’s one of the few species of wild birds that allow the offspring to stay for the first year after hatching. It is not uncommon

to witness large flocks of cardinals during the winter months as they forage for food. Large, airy bushes, like the rhododendrons, serve well as cardinal habitat. You can create your own cardinal friendly environment using a simple brush pile. Choose a suitable area at the edge of your property and commence the process of gathering large tree branches that have fallen to the ground in neighboring woods. Place these loose branches on top of one another until you have a rudimentary brush pile approximately 6 feet wide at the bottom and 4-5 feet tall. Do not compress this new site and leave plenty of airy, open areas for the cardinals to fly into. Viola, instant cardinal habitat! Cardinals prefer bird feeders that imitate their natural feeding area, the ground. These birds are not clingers, like chickadees or finches. Perches are very difficult for large birds to use for feeding purposes. Traditional style tube feeders are not cardinal friendly. Consider adding a tray on the bottom so that cardinals will feel comfortable during feeding. Properly designed hoppers can be the most optimized solution to attract feeding cardinals to your yard. Open tray feeders are another solution. Sunflower and safflower seeds are the two favorite ingredients in the eastern region of the United States for attracting northern cardinals. Of course, water is also a key element to serve in order to maintain your population of cardinal families. Enjoy your birds!! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. conditions. Not having snowmaking capabilities, it was basically hit or miss on whether or not it would be operating at any particular time during the winter. That aura of uncertainty led many skiers to other areas besides Abenaki. In 2010, with money raised by The Friends of Abenaki, a snow making and grooming system was put in place. A pump house drawing water from nearby Abenaki Pond was built by the town while the snow guns, pipes and excavation were completed with funds raised by the Friends. “It all has really been a partnership between the Friends and the town,” said Hipple, who has been the director since 2008. After reliable snow making became part of Abenaki and the skiing schedule was more consistent, the numbers really started to take off. As the numbers grew, it became apparent that the original ski lodge, built in 1940 and really only ca-

pable of handling a handful of skiers (not to mention the double-barreled wood stove that needed to be tended to all day) was no longer functional for Abenaki. (The rope tow, which is still in use, was also built in 1940.) “In 2011, we started making plans for a new lodge,” said Hipple. “A site plan was done and it was decided that the best place for it would be the spot where four small maintenance sheds have sat for years.” A bigger maintenance building was constructed on a different area of the property (which is also home to the Pop Whalen Ice Arena). The Friends began their fundrasing effort for the new lodge and raised an incredible $350,000. The town eventually put $280,000 towards the project. “We also got a grant for $150,000 from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The money usually goes to outdoor things like baseball diamonds and bike paths

The original lodge (seen on the left) usually only had to accommodate smaller groups of skiers over the years and was ample space for many years. but they also give grants to support indoor facilities that serve outdoor recreation,” said Hipple. “The $150,000 went back to the town making their cost for the new lodge $130,000.” The work on the new lodge was started in July of 2015. Just about all of the

work was done by local contractors who worked through Bauen Corporation of Meredith who were the Construction Management Firm. “We even had local craftsmen on board,” explained Hipple as he showed off the hand carved, rope like pillars that grace the entrance

to the lodge. They were made by Brian Stockman of Tuftonboro. “They have a Norwegian look to them.” The new lodge now has plenty of room along with an equipment rental room, snack bar and kitchen and a fully equipped ski patrol area. There is no See abenaki on 25

Though we spoke for only about five minutes, I knew, walking away, this man was a truth-teller. What a refreshing quality in a politician. Looking back, attending this event “sealed the deal for me. I never looked at another candidate. I never needed to. When you vet Sen. Cruz’s voting record it is abundantly clear - Ted Cruz loves our country and believes in defending our Constitution. What more can we ask for in a President? After enduring seven years of divisive and discordant governance, we have the opportunity to have a

leader who can bring our country back together. I have no doubt, Sen. Cruz is the candidate who can get this job done! Senator Cruz will be very active here in New Hampshire in upcoming weeks (www.tedcruz.org). Do not miss the opportunity to hear him speak. He takes questions (unsolicited!) and he has been known to stay long after events are ended, to speak to the people attending. Ted is the real deal. If you desire a leader in Washington who has clearly and demonstratively defended our Constitution and rallied for small government, then Ted Cruz is your man. We all need to be“Courageous Conservatives. Consider yourself invited!

nuclear crisis with North Korea, the Clinton administration nearly came to war with the DPRK over Pyongyang’s proliferation policies. But by Autumn President Bill Clinton signed off on a Geneva Framework Agreement, a dubious diplomatic deal which allowed North Korea to presumably suspend its nuclear development in exchange for American aid and fuel supplies. Needless to say, North Korea cheated on the deal. For decades the DPRK rulers have pursued a policy of neutrons over nutrition for their own population. Ironically in the midst of this crisis, we tend to forget that North Korea still suffers from acute food shortages, remains a recipient of humanitarian aid from the United Nations and donor states. Since 1995, the UN’s Word Food Programme has channeled significant humanitarian aid to the DPRK; even today about 2 million people, mostly women and children are receiving food aid. Current donors include Australia, Russia and South Korea. So will the Security Council expand the sanctions? Possibly. But as Bruce Klinger, a former CIA ana-

lyst now at Washington’s Heritage Foundation states, “President Barack Obama’s assertion that North Korea is the most heavily sanctioned country in the world is simply not true. The Obama Administration has not fully implemented U.S. laws and has targeted fewer North Korean entities than those of the Balkans, Burma, Cuba, Iran and Zimbabwe. Beyond sanctions, credible military deterrence is key. Under the terms of the U.S. /ROK Defense Treaty, Washington is firmly committed to the security of South Korea. Yet, the Obama Administration’s maladroit foreign policy may have given the perception of a policy vacuum in East Asia. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has one more year left in his tenure at the UN. As a South Korean, Ban must make his long anticipated visit to North Korea to defuse this crisis, make the case for peace, and secure his legacy. The clock is ticking. John J. nated thousands of dollars to the campaign, as had her law firm employer. Using young people as horticultural conduits to shape narratives wasn’t an Obama invention, of course. Last week, Hillary Clinton’s town hall events featured two children reading scripted questions on gender pay equity and guns. The campaign balked at accusations that they would exploit kids and manufacture questions. But this is the campaign of the former secretary of state whose staff bragged in emails released last fall that it had “planted questions with CBS News’s “60 Minutes in 2011. And this is the woman whose 2008 presidential campaign staff admitted to providing prefab queries to a Grinnell College student in Iowa. Muriel Gallo-Chasanoff exposed how a senior Clinton staffer approached her with “a binder with pre-written questions. She told CNN -- attention, CNN! -- that the “top one was planned specifically for a college student. ... It said ‘college student’ in brackets and then the question. Gallo-Chasanoff conceded to asking the question, which read: “As a young person, I’m worried about the long-term effects of global warming. How does your plan combat climate change? Upon reflection, GalloChasanoff felt ashamed of her cooperation with Democratic Kabuki theater and condemned the charade as “dishonest. If only more self-respecting journalists felt the same way. of the media, the political establishment or our educational institutions Yet factual data on how many threats or attacks were deterred in a given year by displaying a firearm have long been available. Seldom is it necessary to actually pull the trigger to get some thug or criminal to back off and go elsewhere, often in some haste. Are the only lives that matter those that are lost, usually because there is no gun immediately available to protect them, but not the lives saved because they did have a gun at hand to protect them? Gun control zealots seem especially opposed to people being allowed to carry their guns concealed. But concealed weapons protect not only those who carry them, but also to some extent those who do not, because criminals have no way of knowing in advance who does and does not have a gun. become much more dangerous activities for criminals where many law-abiding people are allowed to carry concealed guns. It can take a lot of the fun out of being a thug. President Obama said that we are the only “advanced” nation with so much gun violence. But there are a number of countries with higher murder rates than ours and stronger gun control laws. But that leaves the definition of “advanced” to Obama -- and makes for clever political theater. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. ers and defenders of his character and considered the attacks against him to be unjust. It appears that he had invitations to become the pastor of churches in Casco (now Portland), Maine and Exeter, New Hampshire, but chose to move to Strawberry Banke (now Portsmouth) to engage in missionary work in 1644 where he married his fourth wife. He eventually returned to England where he died in 1656 according to some sources, though others report him as living to the year 1660 at nearly a hundred years of age. Much more with added detail could be written about the energetic and sometimes rebellious Stephen Bachiler. I desire, though, to come back to the fact of his many descendants. The granddaughter of Mr. Bachiler, Huldah Hussey, married my great, great, great, great, great , great grandfather whose name was John Smith. Add two

more greats to get back to my grandfather Stephen. Along with descendants who have several variations in spelling from the way the founding father of Hampton spelled his last name , such as Batchelder or Bachelor, there are many with other last names who can trace their ancestors back to the influential man who is seen as a saint to some and a sinner to others. Either a victim of false and retaliatory charges who was actually a man of exemplary character and courage or a troublemaker guilty of immoral conduct. Descendants are reported to include Sir Winston Churchill, James Dean, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Daniel Webster, and John Greenleaf Whittier, and many Sanborns. F.B. Sanborn of Concord, Mass. gave a lengthy address concerning the life of Stephen Bachilor at a reunion of the family in 1900 in an attempt to correct inaccuracies and false charges made against his

ancestor. If your last name is Healy, Calley, Blake, Clough, Gove, Garland, Griffith, Mears, Moulton, Wing or something else there may be a possibility, particularly if your family has long-standing connections to northern, coastal New England that your ancestors include one Rev. Stephen Bachiler. This article is but a very abbreviated account of one man’s life but in my research I have found one sentence about him that seems to summarize him from The Great Migration Begins by Robert Charles Anderson (NEHGS, Boston 1995). It says “Among the many remarkable lives lived by early New Englanders, Bachiler’s is the most remarkable.” Such an ancestor, then, must be worth mentioning. And doesn’t that make all of us who have a connection to him also have a connection, however distant, to all of his remarkable descendants?
