Sports Management and Marketing. Crowder credits many factors for the growing success of the tournament with the area itself being the biggest draw. “The players love this area. It is in close proximity to the Boston area where most of the teams come from and the hospitality of the Lakes Region really sets the

scene.” Last year, Crowder added Thermoformed Plastic Boards that were used to surround each rink, They worked so well he realized that they would be able to add two additional rinks for this year. “The boards were really a significant investment for a small grass roots See pond on 17

The Sixth Annual New England Pond Hockey Classic comes back to Meredith next weekend in what has definitely become one of the biggest winter events in the state. Developed by Scott Crowder, the event, which started in 2010

with seventy-seven teams playing on seven rinks on Meredith Bay, has grown to two hundred and fifty teams this year playing on twentyfour rinks. “This has really become one of the premiere pond hockey events in the country,” said Crowder, the son of former NHL forward Bruce Crowder. He also holds a degree in

Arc Iris Coming To The Capitol Center For The Arts Arc Iris, a new orchestral pop project featuring singer and instrumentalist Jocie Adams, former core member of The Low Anthem, will perform at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord on Saturday, February 21, at 8pm. Arc Iris crystallizes the evolution of composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Jocie Adams, a former core member of renowned indie-folk band The Low Anthem. This is a breakaway moment for Adams, who now takes center stage as composer, lyricist and lead vocalist. Embracing her new role as auteur, Adams has created a genre-bending style that often shifts between cabaret-infused jazz, orchestral sophistication, grimy outlaw country, delicate and whimsical harmonies and big-band exhilaration – sometimes all in the same song. Hers is an altogether different world where fantastical whimsy goes hand in hand with down-to-earth grit, and where rigorous classical training inflects, but never softens, the visceral rawness of hard-won experience. Tickets for Arc Iris’ are available now by calling 603-2251111, online at www.ccanh.com, and at the box office, located at 44 South Main Street on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11am to 6pm, and Saturday 11am to 2pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students.

Gilford Rotary Pizza Bowl Gilford Rotary will be sponsoring the 2nd annual Pizza Bowl competition on Sunday, January 25th from Noon to 2pm at the Gilford Youth Center, 19 Potter Hill Road, Gilford. Local pizza purveyors will be packing their pies with a plethora of pleasing palette poppers. Attendees will vote on their favorite pizza (People’s Choice Award) and kids age 8 and under will vote for their favorite (Kids’ Choice Award). There will also be a special panel of pizza professors who will vote on Best Cheese, Best Sauce, Best Crust and Best Specialty Pizza. Pizza places participating include Fratellos Italian Grille, Gilford House of Pizza, Lakeside Famous Roast Beef & Pizza, Papa Gino’s, Pizza Express, Sal’s Pizza and Faros Italian Grille. Additional support and beverages provided by Lakes Region Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and Shaw’s Supermarket, Gilford. Door Prizes include a $120 Gift Certificate from Fratellos Italian Grille as well as a 50/50 raffle. Pizza Bowl Pizza Passports are only $10/person. Children age 8 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased from a member of Gilford Rotary or at the door. OLYMPICS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE? YES! The United States Olympic Committee selected Boston as its nominee to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. While many Bostonians celebrated, some grouches and grumps did not. (I’m talking to YOU, Howie Carr!) I’m excited about the possibility of Olympics in New England. The U.S. last hosted the Summer Games in 1996 in Atlanta—so we’re due. The 2016 Games will be in Rio de Janeiro with the 2020 games in Tokyo. London hosted in 2012 and Beijing in 2008, so it’s North America’s turn. I think it’s going to happen. There’s been a lot of talk about costs and inconveniences, but the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic model works well. Corporate sponsors will ante up big time. And L.A. traffic was not a problem, as people stayed off the highways during the Games. Londoners groused mightily before the 2012 games, but afterwards the United Kingdom was caught up with a new sense of pride after the very successful Games. A lot of the infrastructure is already in place in greater Boston, but some construction will be nec-

Weirs Times sports columnist Mike Moffett tries on Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino’s World Series ring. essary—not necessarily a bad thing. Some Olympic venues will inevitably be outside of Boston, and southern New Hampshire has been suggested for some sites. I say “How about CENTRAL New Hampshire?” How about holding the mountain bike competition at Highland Mountain Bike Park in Northfield? I’m serious! Rowing and sailing? How about Lake Winnipesaukee? At least some preliminaries. (The final medal competitions will no doubt be held on the Charles River.) Equestrian events? Lots of possibilities in our area. (Beats having horses on the Boston Common.) Triathlon? Come on up to Ellacoya! Golf will be an Olympic Sport in 2024. Play some early rounds at Loudon Country Club. (Just watch out for the poison ivy on the 11th hole.)

I know the glamor sports like basketball will be held mostly in the city. But why not have a preliminary women’s game between Angola and Latvia at Plymouth State University’s Foley Gym. Yes! Bring some of the action up this way! Citius, Altius, Fortius!

Roundabout Trouble To The Editor: The residents of Meredith need to wake up. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) is trying to force three roundabouts upon the taxpayers of Meredith. Unfortunately they’ve seduced members of a Meredith Advisory committee and a few of the Meredith Selectmen into thinking it’s a great idea. Some of these officials are going around town saying unicorns are going to prance around the roundabouts and rainbows will arch over them relieving all sorts of problems. The facts say something else. I’m really surprised our Meredith representatives have not done their homework to see how the taxpayers of Boscawen, NH are suffering. Three years ago the NHDOT trudged into their town and residents are still fuming over the roundabout that’s popping truck tires at the tune of $300 each. What’s more, the roundabout is so bad the Boscawen Police Chief has had to turn off his emergency lights in the constricted roundabout for fear that motorists would panic. Roundabouts are often touted by the proponents that they’ll relieve congestion and that they help traffic flow. Nothing could be further from the

Our Story

truth. Roundabouts are intentionally designed to choke and slow traffic, not help it move. Before the existing roundabout in Meredith was installed on Route 3 at the south end of town, drivers could travel Route 3 and not stop. Now you must slow down and often stop if you’re going either north or south on Route 3. If you need proof that roundabouts don’t solve traffic congestion, go watch what happens every weekday morning and afternoon at the roundabout on the west edge of Portsmouth. You can wait up to 15 minutes or more to enter the roundabout there. The roundabouts will cause Meredith residents taxes to go up. Not only will there be hardscape features in the roundabout that have to be maintained that currently don’t exist, but private property on the Meredith tax rolls will also be gobbled up by the government to create the roundabout. If you live in Meredith, your taxes will go up. There’s no doubt about it. I recently approached the Meredith Selectmen and asked them to schedule a public hearing about the proposed roundabouts. I asked them to go out of their way and advertise it so the residents can have a say in what the NHDOT is trying to do. I’ve not yet heard from the Selectmen at the time I

penned this letter. I URGE all Meredith residents to contact the Meredith Selectmen and tell them to reject the roundabouts. Ask the Meredith Selectmen why they were not invited to an important meeting on December 23, 2014 held at the Meredith Firehouse. At this meeting several Meredith employees, including the Fire Chief and the Public Works department, expressed grave concerns about the proposed roundabouts. There are many, many questions that are unanswered at this time about the three proposed Meredith roundabouts. It’s time for the taxpayers of Meredith to rise up and tell the NHDOT to go packing and sell their roundabouts to other communities. We don’t want nor need them. Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Getting It Right

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Two New Hampshire State Representatives and one State Senator have sponsored a bill that could significantly affect the future of our state. The impact of what this bill could mean if passed would be felt from here on through eternity. It is that important and I feel that it must not be taken lightly and needs to be discussed further before it becomes official. Of course, I am talking about House Bill 113 which reads “The giant mastodon, Mammut americanum, is hereby designated as the official state fossil of New Hampshire. At first, you may read that and say to yourself: “This may be the stupidest thing I will hear all year and it is only January. I can understand such a response. After all, what if we make the mastodon our official state fossil and then, somewhere down the road, someone unearths the fossil of a giant mammoth here in the state? Boy, wouldn’t we feel dumb? There would be no taking it back then and we and future generations of Granite Staters would have to live with the embarrassment of having the mastodon as our state fossil while the whole time the mammoth would be the elephant in the room. That is why, if we are to have a state fossil, we need to make sure that it is something that we

know is going to be a sure thing. First we need to define what a fossil is. The dictionary has a few definitions. One, of course, is “a remnant, impression, or trace of an organism of past geologic ages that has been preserved in the earth’s crust which would obviously signify a mastodon or mammoth (or maybe the yearly casino bill Repeatum Adnaseum that always comes up for a vote). But there are other definitions that we have to consider as well. One reads: “A person whose views are outmoded. (A good example of this can be a state legislator who has been in office for way too long Wornum Outwelcomeum and keeps introducing old legislation over and over again, like, say, the casino bill.) Another definition of fossil is: “Something that has become rigidly fixed. (See above.) So, you see, a fossil doesn’t necessarily have to be a thing like a mastodon which could later come back to embarrass us if a mammoth shows up, it can be a person or an idea whose time has passed. If we were to name the latter things as our state fossil they could never come back to embarrass us because by giving them that designation, we have declared that we are already embarrassed (if you get my drift). Maybe we could declare that “all bills that waste time and money to declare something or other as the official state something or other are hereby designated as the state fossils. Of course, those who truly want the mastodon to be the state fossil over anything else will do all in their power to see that it happens. I understand

that the mastodon lobby is very powerful. To see those high-powered lobbyists lurking about the halls of the state house, dressed like Fred, and Wilma, Flintstone is sure to grab the attention and votes of more than a few of the easily persuadable representatives. A few “Yabba Dabba Dosâ€? and the lobbyist will have them eating out of their outstretched hands. Perhaps they may even use the old “little kids and puppy dogsâ€? scam, bringing in fifth graders from a local school to tell those in the house and senate how important it is for the mastodon to be the state fossil. After all, it worked for the pumpkin as the state fruit. (How soon we forget!) There will be a lot of back and forth over this state fossil thing and it is important that we get it correct. All the other legislation that will come up this session: taxes, Medicaid, more things that you can’t do while sitting in your car, etc‌will be things that can always be changed down the road if we get it wrong. But figuring out what should be the state fossil, or the state anything for that matter, should really take all the resources we have at the state house. If we get that wrong, there is no turning back. No matter what the decision as to the state fossil, be it the mastodon or the mammoth, the casino bill or even a state lawmaker who has been in Concord way too long and has forgotten the real reason he or she is there, I will accept it, as long as it is given the careful consideration it deserves. Let’s just hope all involved do the right thing.

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, January 22, 2015

Hey, How’s America’s Rail Security Doing? With vengeance-seeking global jihadists on the loose here and around the world, now is a good time to ask (again): Are we ready by Michelle Malkin for a nefariSyndicated Columnist ous terrorist attack on our train and transit lines? Smoke and fire plagued two of the nation’s major metro rail stations this week, raising justified questions about safety and preparedness. On Monday, one person died and 84 fell ill after heavy smoke filled the L’Enfant Plaza Metro in Washington, D.C. Officials believe an “electrical arcing event” caused the lethal Beltway incident. A probe into the cause of the arcing -- as well as an investigation into evacuation delays that trapped hundreds of passengers -- is underway. On Tuesday, an estimated 150 New York Fire Department personnel responded to a threealarm fire at Penn Station that started before 2:30 a.m. Two firefighters suffered injuries battling the Big Apple blaze, which was initially deemed “suspicious” and then “accidental.” Worth noting: A militant ISIS sympathizer published multiple threats on Twitter a few hours before the fire, warning that “tomorrow New York will burn” and predicting a “3:00 a.m. bomb.” Whatever the causes of these two incidents, Americans need to know whether homeland security bureaucrats are doing their jobs -- or hitting their over-worn government snooze buttons. Jihadi rail attacks have been a domestic and worldwide threat

for more than 15 years, from the 1997 NYC subway-bombing plot to New Delhi, Mumbai, Chechnya, Madrid and London. Since 9/11, there have been 1,800 worldwide terrorist attacks on surface transport systems, which have claimed 4,000 innocent lives. Jihadi mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, whose Gitmo classmates have been released in droves by the Obama administration, told interrogators in 2003 of al-Qaida’s plot to target the D.C. metro rail system. In 2010, Afghan-born jihadist Najibullah Zazi pleaded guilty to terrorism charges after plotting to bomb New York subways with devices similar to the ones used in the 2005 London rail attacks. And last year, two al-Qaida-supported terrorists were arrested after plotting to bomb and derail Canada’s national train service between Toronto and New York City’s Penn Station. The U.S. General Accounting Office has issued copious rail security recommendations since at least 2004-2005. What has the Transportation Security Administration done with all those reports? Not much, as far as I can tell. It’s been nearly three years since the GAO last concluded that TSA was failing to collect and analyze rail security threat data. The audit found that oversight and enforcement of transit security measures were “inconsistent” and inspections so spotty that “three of 19 rail agencies GAO contacted were not inspected from January 2011 through June 2012, including a large (unnamed) metropolitan rail agency.” The Department of Homeland Security “accepted” the recommendations, but issued no timeSee malkin on 26

Time to Stop the Madness I don’t know about you, but I am hearing more and more episodes of our officials shunning accountability and using intimidation to “bar the by Jane Cormier door” of transparHooksett, NH. ency. Whether you are in Washington or in New Hampshire, a growing trend of elitist public servants are weaponizing their power. In essence, they are flexing their “power muscles” and saying “question us and we will make you sorry”! On January 6, the Windham School Board met to discuss and vote to spend $577K on a “behavioral modification” energy conservation company. Prior to the vote, Windham residents (with conservation expertise) wanted to speak about this matter and were denied the opportunity. One citizen voiced frustration with the proposal and the process and the meeting was immediately adjourned, the cameras turned off, and the police unnecessarily

called. (These guys just love speed dial, don’t they…) You will remember on May 5, 2014 William Baer was arrested at the Gilford NH School Board meeting, for violating a newly ordered 2-minute speaking rule imposed by School Board Chair, Sue Allen. Allen restricted each speaker to a 2 minutes limit, in statement format (no questions or answers allowed, of course), and only one speaking opportunity per person. When William Baer violated this “rule,” Allen declared him “out of order” and had him arrested and removed. Of course, the court threw out these charges, ridiculous as they were, but it does show clearly the game of the day. INTIMIDATION. But, let us say right here, loudly and clearly, INTENTIONAL acts of intimidation are unacceptable in any way, shape or form. In November, Dover residents Rick and Mary Hebbard were attending a school board meeting expressing their disappointment about the bullying treatment of a 91 year old sitting school board See cormier on 25

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, January 22, 2015

The Death Of Truth If you’ve watched as many police procedurals on TV as I have since Law & Order redefined the genre in 1990, you could be by Ken Gorrell excused if you Northfield, NH. believe yourself capable of solving a crime or conducting an autopsy. Most of those shows feature a medical examiner, and the special effects are an order of magnitude more realistic than they were back when Jack Klugman solved crimes as a county coroner on Quincy, M.E. It’s almost like being in the morgue. Law enforcement and legal professionals would be quick to point out the unrealistic ways the Law

& Order or CSI franchises portray their jobs. That said, I’m ready to take my TV “degree” in forensic medicine and conduct an autopsy on a victim brutally killed on January 8, 2015. This examination is purely rhetorical, but the victim is real enough, in a conceptual way: She is named “Truth.” Her killer is our newly-inaugurated governor, the Honorable Maggie Hassan. Since we know the identity of both victim and perpetrator, the object of this exercise isn’t to solve a crime but to explain how it was committed. To that end we’ll use the “testimony” of the guilty party. Though she admits to nothing, her words prove her guilt. In her inaugural address our governor killed Truth by saying things that simply aren’t so and failing to put statements in proper context. Yes, I know she’s a politician, but lines must be drawn somewhere if

World Leaders Link Arms Against Terror-America Missing UNITED NATIONS - More

than a million people along with forty-four world leaders rallied in Paris to proclaim liberty and call for by John J. Metzler press freedoms in the wake of Syndicated Columnist the radical Islamist media massacre and subsequent terror attacks. The rallies were the biggest since the liberation of Paris from the Nazis in 1944. But while the Americans were a prominent part of the extraordinary events seventy years ago, this time around America was notably missing. Neither President Barack Obama, nor Vice President Joe Biden, nor any high-ranking member of the U.S. government, except for our locally based Ambassador, joined in this mega-march for freedom and solidarity with France in the aftermath of a dark week of terrorist attacks. French President François Hollande was joined by a host of European political figures ranging from German Chancellor Angela Merkel

and British Prime Minister David Cameron to bigwigs in the European Union. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was there (amidst a protocol controversy) as was Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas. Ministers from Jordan, Turkey and Russia participated too. But where was the USA? America’s absence at this politically defining rally and moment was inexcusable. For an Administration which speaks with self-assured hubris about “smart diplomacy “ and “soft power” the Paris demonstrations presented the perfect template to show unity with an ally, France, while at the same time importantly sending a global message that the USA stands in solidarity with press freedoms and against terror. The optics created by the Obama Administration’s brush-off were at best indifferent and at worst uncaring. But the symbolism was stunning. Josh Earnest, the White House spokesman, admitted that, “It’s fair to say we should have sent someone with a higher profile.’’ The political blowback to the See Metzler on 24

we wish to maintain a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Without Truth, we can’t make informed decisions and are at the mercy of those we entrust with the reins of power. Here are two key findings from Truth’s autopsy: Governor Hassan stated that “… the Tax Foundation ranked [NH] 7th best in the country for businesses” and that this ranking represents something “important to our economic success.” She then praised our lack of broad-based

taxes. Her statements were like blunt force trauma to the head, resulting in death. The evidence is plain to see. The Tax Foundation, a D.C.based, non-partisan think tank, bills itself as “the nation’s leading independent tax policy research organization.” In its 2015 State Business Tax Climate Index, NH did indeed rank 7th. However, this index is based on five areas of comparison: corporate taxes, individual income taxes, sales taxes, See gorrell on 25

New Year’s Irresolution President Barack Obama’s absence from the great gathering in Paris of national leaders from other countries, to show their solidarity with by Thomas Sowell France in its Syndicated Columnist opposition to Islamic terrorists, was another sign of the Obama administration’s continuing irresolution in the face of terror. Even the recent courageous message of Egypt’s president, Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi, calling on his fellow Muslims around the world to “revolutionize” the interpretation of Islam, to make it more compatible with peaceful relations with other peoples, put no steel in the spine of Barack Obama. From his earliest days in the White House, our president has downplayed the terrorist threat from Islamic extremists. He declared victory as he pulled American troops out of Iraq, setting the stage for a huge defeat when ISIS moved in to create their own new government, on both Iraqi and Syrian soil -- while committing atrocities against men, women and children not seen since the days of the Nazis. Undaunted, President Obama has since reaffirmed his determination to similarly pull American troops out of Afghanistan, with a similar declaration that they are no longer needed. He proceeds as if he can declare a war over when

it suits the political convenience of his administration. But a war is not over until the enemy stops fighting. The terrorist enemies of Iraq and Afghanistan are enemies of the United States as well. ISIS has left no doubt of that by beheading Americans and spreading the videotapes of these beheadings for the enjoyment of like-minded people in the Middle East and beyond. Not even the movement of the world’s biggest sponsor of terrorism -- Iran -- toward building a nuclear bomb has caused the Obama administration to change its vision of the world. For Obama, the question has never been how to stop Iran from going nuclear, but how to stop Israel from stopping Iran from going nuclear. He has accomplished that by public declarations of support for Israel, while engaging in protracted negotiations with Iran that serve only to allow Iran to fortify and proliferate the sites of its nuclear facilities, to the point where Israel’s bombers may no longer be able to destroy those facilities. At one time, information was leaked that Israel had a secret arrangement with Azerbaijan for Israeli bombers to land there and refuel on their way back from bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities. It is doubtful if anyone in the Obama administration would have dared to leak Israel’s military secrets without knowing that it was all right with the presiSee Sowell on 26

A Healing Skill

Healthy Tips From Dr. Fink

by Dr. Charles Fink

Fink Chiropractic & Natural Health Improvement Center

Stop the Insanity! With the end of the Old Year and beginning of the new, and the Holidays behind us, many of us are finding our clothes fit just a bit tighter, digestive issues are a concern, our bodies are extra achy, etc.. We are miserable and frustrated with the prospect of yet another diet and exercise program. Maybe you followed a diet and workout routine last year and got into shape, felt great, lost some weight? Over the summer with all those barbecues, ice cream cones and then into the fall with the comfort foods, Beef stew with hot bread and butter…..mmmm! Then it was Thanksgiving and Christmas… I have heard the definition of insanity is “always doing the same thing and expecting a different result”. The time has come to try something new. Where to start you ask? How about with a 3 week purification program? This program helps your body purify and rebuild itself from the inside out. With the structured plan designed to help purify, nourish and maintain a healthy lifestyle. 3 weeks or 21 days is enough time to help make a new habit and break an old one. After all, if you’ve been this route a number of times it must be time to stop the insanity! Your body is designed to rid itself of the toxins we are exposed to daily, such as pollutants, pesticides, and chemicals. However, it can become overburdened. Your liver,

kidneys, small intestine and large intestine, once the toxic load has been lightened, can now focus on energy and weight reduction. Once you have finished the program you will discover you have lost weight in some of those hard to lose areas, you feel great, and your stomach is flat! Now what? One gal mentioned to me as she neared the end of her program, “I’m afraid to go off the program!” I feel so good and don’t want to blow it! She said losing the weight is hard, but keeping it off is harder. This is where you need to take a long look at what you do everyday. Do you sit all day at your work, or work long hours? Is your time busy with children or an elderly parent that ties you down, making it difficult to go for walks or to workout. Exercise facilitates the removal of toxins and helps maintain a healthy weight. Be sure to stretch prior to exercising. Try exercising in front of the TV if you aren’t really motivated, Get a workout buddy, get the family involved, join a class or take a dance class. How about line or square dancing? Make it fun and something you’ll stick with, but mix it up so you don’t lose interest. There are many options for exercise available to us these days if we really want to move and burn those calories, even while sitting in a chair! Some of the benefits of purification are; Improved weight, increase in energy, better digestion, less bloating, clearer thinking, clearer skin, shinier hair, better sleep. When you finish the program you want to have a plan already in place for maintaining your new im-

proved health. You should continue to invest some planning in your menus, food shopping and exercise. It’s when we stop this that we run into trouble. This has to become a lifestyle change, a new habit that you stick with. You can have all those things, the barbecue, ice cream, beef stew and bread on occasion, but most of the time you want to stick to healthy fats, veggies, fruits, lean (free range or organic when possible) meats, plenty of water to stay hydrated. I find the best approach is to plan your grocery list and be sure to go shopping after a meal, never go hungry! If you are preparing foods that the whole family will eat it is easier for you to stick to the plan. Always have foods prepared ahead of time in the fridge to help you make better choices. Waiting to fix something when you’re hungry can cause you to eat too much or to grab something you shouldn’t. Set aside an afternoon, or after your grocery shopping to wash and prepare fruits and veggies so a salad, stir fry or smoothie are put together fast. If you make a soup, stew, roasted veggies, salads, rice, lentils ahead of time you are more apt to be successful. Be creative, search the web for ideas and recipes, variety is essential, we do not want to get bored with the same old thing. Experiment with flavors and change an old tried and true recipe into a new and interesting meal. 5 Quick Tips to Help You Keep New Year’s Weight Loss Resolution New Year’s Resolutions are easier to make than to keep, especially when it comes to dieting. While life can often seem at odds with your health and fitness goals, there are plenty of ways to avoid common pitfalls this New Year and stay on the weight loss track. • Snack and drink smart: When you’re one-thego, easy protein-packed snacks will help you stay on track. Try beef jerky, low-fat string cheese, or 100 calorie packs of almonds. Fiber-rich wholegrains, fruits and vegetables can also help keep hunger at bay. Calories from drinks add up fast. Stick with dry wines, as they often have fewer calories than sweeter varieties. Light beers, with approximately 100 calories for every 12 ounce serving, are also a good choice. If you prefer cocktails, use calorie-free mixers, such as seltzer with 1.5 oz. of spirits. • Make it easy: Dieting

should be easy. Most people often complain they fail at diets because they need to constantly count calories, or weigh and measure foods. Look for programs that help you stick to your goals by offering convenience and support. For example, Nutrisystem helps with the hard part -- the counting, weighing and measuring -- by offering preportioned and personalized meal plans designed to fuel individuals with the right amount of calories for how their metabolism burns, as well as satisfy individual taste. And with their Fast 5+ kit, you can jumpstart your weight loss, since it promises to help you lose five pounds plus an inch off your waist in your first week of dieting. You’ll see results quickly, giving you motivation to keep going. There’s no better time than now to start your weight loss journey and make your pledge to lose. To learn more, visit www. Nutrisystem.com or the Nutrisystem Facebook page to #pledgetolose today. • Eat out, right: Eating out is sometimes unavoidable. Just be sure to check out a restaurant’s nutrition

information online before you go, so you can make wise choices. Make substitutions like salad, with dressing on the side, instead of fries and don’t be afraid to ask if a menu item can be modified. Also, be mindful of portion sizes. Take half your meal home and enjoy it for tomorrow’s lunch. • Facing the scale: Weight fluctuates throughout the day. Weigh yourself at the same time of day in similar weight clothing to get the most accurate readings. Remember though, the number on the scale won’t always reflect your hard work. Focus instead on healthy, positive changes and how you feel. • Aim for 30: Squeeze 30 minutes of activity into your day. Walk during lunch, jump rope during your favorite nightly TV show or turn on music and dance around the house. Remember, everyone falls off the wagon from time to time, but the New Year is the perfect time to commit to your weight loss goals.

Two guests from the beginning –both former Franklin mayors Ken Merrifield and Tony Giunta – and others will join will join us by phone for perhaps a favorite memory, or just an update on where we were in `97 as compared to 2015. ******** Ben Franklin: “Without freedom of thought there can be no such thing as wisdom and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech.” January 16, 2015 After a tumultuous two weeks of terror and emotional responses in Europe, British Prime Minister David Cameron is in Washington to meet with President Obama, largely about security and cyber issues. On Friday, they used a joint news conference to show off the strengths of their “special relationship” to the press. Obama calls Cameron “bro”. Press wants to know why so casual. Hussein

responds that “Put simply, David is a great friend. Great Britain is our indispensable partner.” But the biggest moment of the presser was on Iran. Obama addressed the ongoing negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, and a bill that lawmakers are expected to introduce next month that would increase sanctions on the Iranian regime. It’s a bill the president says he will veto. “Through some very strong diplomatic work, we united the world and isolated Iran. And it’s because of that work that we brought them to the negotiating table.” But Obama is still putting the odds of a comprehensive agreement with Iran at “probably less than 50-50.” Iran, he said, is run by a regime that “is deeply suspicious of the West, deeply suspicious of us.” Obama said new sanctions legislation would likely cause the negotiations to collapse. “And if that happens, there is no constraint on Iran at that point going back and doing exactly what it had been doing before they came to the table.” George Orwell: Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.

Keep Your Cardinals

No credit check! No long term contracts! No lease, you own the system!

by Steve White Contributing Writer

The cardinal is relatively new to this area of New England. Prior to the popularity of backyard bird feeding, the northern most boundary of this brilliant red bird was the Connecticut and Rhode Island regions. As more homeowners enjoyed this hobby of feeding wild birds in the last two decades, attracting the cardinal has almost become an obsession. The chase was on. Just how do you keep this majestic bird in your area year round? Attracting cardinals to your backyard is not a difficult task if you have the right habitat to start with. Unfortunately, most backyards have eliminated the environment necessary for maintaining nesting cardinals. Cardinals are basically ground birds. They enjoy the comfort and safety that natural cover provides. Brambles, briar patches, and thickets are standard cardinal territory. You may witness cardinals singing from the tallest branches of trees, but for nesting purposes, this species prefers the lower levels of your area. Many people choose not to have these natural plantings in their backyard and may have a difficult, if not impossible, task of attracting northern cardinals. Nesting birds are feeding birds. The cardinal is very aggressive in defending its territory from other birds. They are extremely loyal as well. It’s one of the few species of wild birds that allow the offspring to stay for

the first year after hatching. It is not uncommon to witness large flocks of cardinals during the winter months as they forage for food. Large, airy bushes, like the rhododendrons, serve well as cardinal habitat. You can create your own cardinal friendly environment using a simple brush pile. Choose a suitable area at the edge of your property and commence the process of gathering large tree branches that have fallen to the ground in neighboring woods. Place these loose branches on top of one another until you have a rudimentary brush pile approximately 6 feet wide at the bottom and 4-5 feet tall. Do not compress this new site and leave plenty of airy, open areas for the cardinals to fly into. Viola, instant cardinal habitat! Cardinals prefer bird feeders that imitate their natural feeding area, the ground. These birds are not clingers, like chickadees or finches. Perches are very difficult for large birds to use for feeding purposes. Traditional style tube feeders are not cardi-

nal friendly. Consider adding a tray on the bottom so that cardinals will feel comfortable during feeding. Properly designed hoppers can be the most optimized solution to attract feeding cardinals to your yard. Open tray feeders are another solution. Sunflower and safflower seeds are the two favorite ingredients in the eastern region of the United States for attracting northern cardinals. Of course, water is also a key element to serve in order to maintain your population of cardinal families. Enjoy your birds!! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. cer extravaganza is slated to be held in the Persian Gulf state of Qatar. Staging this event in Qatar shows how money talks, as the oil rich country has plenty of petro-dollars. Rumors persist regarding bribery of Olympic officials. Unfortunately, not everyone in that country is doing well. Nepalese migrants working construction jobs have been living in wretched labor camps, with little relief from the typical 100 degree temperatures. The Guardian newspaper reported that around 160 workers died of heat related maladies while working on Cup construction projects last year. How did FIFA ever get caught in this predicament? What effect will the 100 degree temperature have on players and spectators? There were major concerns about the heat and humidity last year in Brazil. Qatar will be many times worse.

Move the games to the USA! Every national team on the planet will support such a switch― including the Qataris!

Obama Administration’s most recent foreign policy faux pas was pretty bi-partisan. Even the proAdministration New York Daily News headline shouted “You let the World Down, and editorialized “Obama and America shamefully skip Paris March against Terror. To be fair, I would imagine that even if President Obama wanted to participate in the Paris rally, the Secret Service would have had fifty reasons to say no; after all the manifestation was in a open air setting amid majestic wide boulevards and plazas. Security concerns would have trumped any plan to participate. I totally understand. But the Secret Service was not even approached about a plan in the first place. Maybe it’s just that the President doesn’t want to share the stage with others? Vice President Biden was in India as was Secretary of State John Kerry. Yet Attorney General Eric Holder was actually in

Paris and skipped the march! American Ambassador Jane Hartley, a major Obama campaign donor, was tasked to officially represent the USA. Now, the Political damage control mode begins. Secretary of State John Kerry, a proud Francophile, finally visited Paris to offer a syrupy mea culpa in good French for the slight. And, I’m certain Obama will make a special reference to the tragic events in France during his upcoming State of the Union address. He will speak about leadership and seriously intone how America leads in the fight against extremism. Yet in plain fact while the world was showing its solidarity with France against terrorism, team Obama was watching Sunday football playoff games! What message does this send to our allies and friends? What message does this send to our enemies? Not surprisingly a Yemen based Al Qaida affiliate was likely involved in the Paris attacks. The Obama Administration wishes to blur the image, tone down the threat, and downplay the proper definition of radical Islam. And if the story could not get stranger, the President authorized the release of five Yemeni detainees from Guantanamo Bay. Talk about bad timing in the wake of the Paris attacks. But French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, addressing the National Assembly stated the case succinctly; “France is at war with terrorism, radicalism and jihadism‌France is not at war with Islam and Muslims.â€?

member. School Board Chair, Amanda Russell called Dover Dispatch for “assistance during a five minute recess taken after Mary Hebbard spoke. Seems some school board members believed Rick Hebbard was carrying a firearm underneath his sweat shirt and they felt “threatened. The “firearm turned out to be a 30 ft tape measure. Really? I can remember also being personally attacked by intimidation (through LAWFARE) when Progressives in the Belknap District Delegation sought to PERSONALLY sue then Chair, Colette Worsman and myself as Clerk of the Delegation, because we dared to take on the Belknap Commissioners. A frivolous law suit was used to intimidate us. Of course, this suit was thrown out, and indeed, the court did eventually rule in support of the Republican Belknap Delegation that the Belknap County Commissioners were not following proper budgetary law with regard to county budgeting. Unfortunately, more taxpayer money flew out the window with this lame attempt to use LAWFARE to intimidate oppositional challenges. So, here we are. These type of situations are happening all over. I see and hear about them all the time. We need to stand together and say STOP. We need to take back the power and show those who are supposed to be SERVING, they will held ACCOUNTABLE for their actions. If we do not stand against this intimidation NOW, we stand to lose so much more LATER. Our Republic only functions properly when WE are at the helm of the ship. You know, regular folks like you and I, NOT the politicians, and not the paid administrators. US. Go to your local government meetings. Attend your school board meetings. Be present – be active – be heard. It is way past the time to stop this madness. Remember, public officials answer to US! Never forget that important fact!

unemployment insurance taxes, and property taxes. In such a ranking, a state like ours with no sales or individual income taxes gets a boost. The study stated just that: “The absence of a major tax is a common factor among many of the top ten states. What happened when the Foundation looked just at corporate taxes? NH ranked 48th. We were also 44th and 43rd, respectively, for Unemployment Insurance Tax and Property Tax. Oh, and our workman’s comp rates are the highest in New England. Not such fertile ground for starting or expanding a business. That’s the reality of our “businessfriendly tax code. While not the death blow, our victim suffered multiple contusions all over her body, likely caused by being hit repeatedly by whoppers like this: “In order to maximize our regional position, and to spark economic growth for decades to come, we should bring commuter rail from Boston to Nashua and Manchester. Commuter rail? When has commuter rail ever brought net economic growth to regions like ours? Truth knew the answer to that – never. Businessman Warren Meyers, writing in Forbes a few years ago, described commuter rail as “a terrible investment, a black hole for pouring away money, that has little net impact on efficiency or pollution. Throughout the country passenger rail is heavily subsidized by the non-riding public, unlike our nation’s private, profitable, and efficient freight transport network. It is far more expensive and less flexible than buses, requiring significant capital investment and high annual operating expenditures. Since only the densest urban rail systems come close to paying for themselves, where does the governor propose coming up with funding? Maybe she’ll try to raise corporate taxes. There is evidence of additional wounds to Truth by Hassan’s speech, from dissembling about the minimum wage to conflating health “coverage and “care. But further dissec-

tion won’t bring Truth back to life. If we want Truth to live in NH, we need to elect truthful politicians. We’ll have a chance to redeem ourselves in 2016. After all, a majority of Granite State voters are complicit in this crime. Sadly, we’re all going to pay for it.

dent. Since it is unlikely that very many people in the White House had this information, the leaker’s identity could hardly have remained secret from the president. Barack Obama cannot be unaware of the consequences of these and other foreign policy decisions that undermine the security of America and America’s allies. He is not stupid, nor is there any reason to believe that he is cowardly. Instead, there is a remarkable consistency between Obama’s domestic policies and his foreign policies on both economic and military matters. It was a sign of this consis-

tency that he was proposing to have the taxpayers pay for free community college education while everyone else was focused on the terror attacks in Paris. Barack Obama’s vision of the world, both at home and abroad, is one in which some people and nations are undeservedly far better off than others in many ways. In the Obama view of the world, those who are undeservedly thriving (“You didn’t build that!”) are to be forced to pay for benefits to those who are not thriving, whether the latter are people on welfare, community college students or immigrants from poorer nations, who are

to be let into the United States to take a share of Americans’ prosperity. On the international stage, it is the same principle, where the problem is seen as Western nations being undeservedly better off than other nations, both economically and in terms of greater military power. Here too, Obama is for redistribution, even at the expense of his own country -- if someone with such a “citizen of the world” viewpoint really thinks of America as his country, rather than a staging area for his worldchanging, ideologicallydriven crusades. frame to address the deficiencies. Capitol Hill and the White House have been far too preoccupied with legalizing millions of illegal aliens in the name of homeland security to follow up. Meanwhile, Amtrak remains bogged down in union politics and crony business as usual. As I first reported in 2009, the Obama administration quietly gutted the nation’s most highly trained post9/11 counterterrorism rail security team, Amtrak’s Office of Security Strategy and Special Operations (OSSSO). The elite unit -- whose members came from U.S. Special Forces, counterterrorism and other military service -- was disbanded in a power play with powerful labor leaders angered over its non-union status. Team Obama also pushed out former Amtrak Inspector General Fred Weiderhold, who played an instrumental role in creating OSSSO’s predecessor at Amtrak, the Counter-Terrorism Unit. Weiderhold had blown the

whistle on financial improprieties and called out the administration’s interference with his watchdog probes. Eleanor Acheson, Amtrak’s general counsel and longtime crony pal of Vice President Joe Biden, remains in her post despite a congressional probe and the Transportation Department inspector general’s conclusion that she “unlawfully interfered” with Weiderhold’s investigative work. Sources tell me that Acheson’s law department continues to be rife with contract favoritism, shady billing practices and partisan pocket-lining. Rest assured: America’s top rail officials are hard at work -- protecting themselves, their jobs and their bottom lines. All aboard! factory did their job. Mind you, all modern exterior doors do leak some air. Door manufacturers are trying their best to produce a leak-free product, but it hasn’t been invented yet. High-quality modern doors leak very little air around the door seals when installed properly. So the first question you need to ask is, Was your door

installed correctly? I’m now going to frustrate you a little more by adding some simple physics to the mix. Your current door may be installed well, and the door seals may be doing their job. In that case, what you’re feeling may be simple cold-air convection currents. If it gets bitterly cold outdoors, the inside temperature of the glass panels in

your doors can be significantly lower than the air temperature indoors. As your indoor air contacts this cool or cold glass panel, it drops in temperature. We all know that hot air rises, but few remember that cold air falls. If you could see the air moving past your door, it would resemble a slowmoving treadmill. The air layer right next to the door

would be constantly falling down toward the floor. This cold air needs to be replaced so warm air at the floor rises to replace the air that’s falling. I have observed this in my own home by using a lit kitchen match. I have several large French doors that are primarily glass, and I know there’s no air leak through them. I’ve lit a match and blown it out, holding the smoking match at the base of the glass. You can see the match smoke being pulled down toward the floor. It’s pretty dramatic. There are quite a few steps that have to be followed to eliminate air leaks and ensure the weather stripping seals on an exterior door work as designed. In the limited space I have, I’ll just hit the high points. First and foremost, the door frame needs to be installed in the same plane as the door itself. It’s very easy to twist the door frame while installing it. If this happens and you screw and/or nail the frame in place, the flat door will not contact the weather stripping uniformly. It will crush the weather stripping at one location and the door may not contact it at the opposite diagonal corner. The most common cause for this is that the rough opening in the wall is twisted. Installers will nail the door to the rough opening so the jamb is flush with the interior and exterior

wall coverings so the door trim looks good. But if the opening is twisted, this practice leads to air leakage. A common source of air leaks is under the door threshold. It’s important for the threshold to be level, but the subfloor may not be level. The installer puts shims under the door to level the threshold and this creates a gap. Caulk is normally used to seal this, but installers can and do goof this up. The sides and top of the door frame jambs need to be sealed. Expanding foam that’s designed for windows and doors is the product to use. To be safe, apply it from the outside and if it doesn’t extend all the way to the inside wall, fill the remaining gap with lightly compacted fiberglass insulation strips. Practice with the foam because it can expand far more than you realize. I always use modern rubberized asphalt flashing tape as a final barrier. Once the foam has hardened and I’ve trimmed it flush with the outside of the door frame, I install a 2- or 3-inch-wide piece of weatherproof flashing tape that laps over the exterior sheathing and onto the door jamb. I hold the tape back from the door jamb enough so that the door trim hides it. This flashing tape will not allow air past it, so it’s an excellent product to consider.

Take a high-voltage thrill ride through two and a half decades of Aerosmith music from the early standards to the contemporary hits, when Draw The Line: The Endorsed Aerosmith Tribute Show hits the stage on Saturday, February 7 at the Rochester Opera House at 8pm (Doors 7pm). Steven Tyler doppelganger Neill Byrnes, not only resembles the rock icon, but sounds just like him. Byrnes has the tone, the mannerisms and the attitude of America’s favorite rocker. When Tyler met Byrnes, he was so impressed with his raw talent that he referred Byrnes to his own vocal coach. Bostonbased Draw The Line has the character and feel of a genuine Aerosmith concert, when they slam out Aerosmith’s outstanding hits; Dream On, Walk This Way, Crazy, Cryin’,
