Winter Fun In Full Swing In New Hampshire!

INSIDE THIS WEEK: Pond Hockey Preview... Lake Waukewan (above) was the site of the 3rd New England Pond Hockey Classic. It was moved from its usual location on Meredith Bay due to ice conditions. This year, the 7th Annual event, is once again to be held on Waukewan as a warm early December and then windy days made it difficult to ensure proper ice thickness for the tournament on the bay.

Crotched Mountain in Bennington, NH has night skiing on 100% of their trails every night but Sunday. Midnight Madness--every Friday and Saturday night the lifts spin until 3 am and include live bands and a bonfire. Yes, 3am, check out CrotchedMtn.com for more details.

NE Pond Hockey Classic Ski and Ride with Friends Moved To Lake Waukewan At Crotched Mountain by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

The weekend of February 5th7th will see the 7th Annual New England Pond Hockey Classic (NEPHC) in Meredith. Due to the unseasonably warm temperatures in December and January, the event has been moved to Lake Waukewan from Meredith Bay. “We had to move the event to Waukewan in 2012 too and it went great, so we are well prepared for this change and always had it as a backup plan,” said tournament organizer Scott Crowder. “It really was the call of Mother Nature. We thought we would have some good ice on Meredith Bay as the cold weather

came in but the windy days kept ice from forming. The ice has really started to set up well on Waukewan and we are working towards the safe levels we need to host the event, it should be in great shape come tournament weekend. The only other alternatives would have been to change the weekend or to cancel the tournament completely and nobody wanted that.” This sold out event, now one of the largest Pond Hockey Tournament in North America has become the biggest winter events in New Hampshire. Crowder, started NEPHC in 2010 with seventy-seven teams playing on seven rinks. This year twenty-six rinks will be needed See hockey on 15

The cold and snowy weather didn’t keep us from getting together last week to ski and snowboard. In fact it made us want to hit the slopes even more knowing that super snow conditions would be there waiting for us. The cold weather has been perfect for making snow and combined with a few inches of snow here and a few more inches of snow there gifted by Mother Nature most of New Hampshire’s ski areas are snow covered and groomed. King Pine, Pats Peak and Crotched were the first to open 100% of their trails last week! Nordic

Centers are grooming more kilometers and every day the trail counts continue to rise. Sure feels like winter now. I arrived at Crotched just before lunch to meet up with some friends who just so happen to be ski writers. We were there for the second day of our gathering of NASJA-East, the Eastern members of the North American Snowsport Journalists Association. The previous day we were at Pats Peak. This was all rather convenient for me. My adult racing league team races on Monday nights at Pats Peak. Yesterday I had arrived just in time for lunch and skied right into the night. An Evening with Poet and Professor Liz Ahl Poet and Plymouth State University Professor Liz Ahl of Holderness will give a cold New Hampshire evening a warm glow as she reads poems created during her recent sabbatical year. The program will be held from 7–8 p.m. Thursday, February 4, in the Smith Recital Hall at the Silver Center for the Arts. There is no charge for admission. Ahl says, “My poetry is accessible to, even enjoyed by, folks who don’t think they like poetry.” While she is still narrowing her list of possible poems to read, she says there will definitely be “local interest” work at this reading. Professor Ahl is the author of three poetry collections: “Talking About the Weather,” published in 2012; “Luck,” published in 2010 and “A Thirst That’s Partly Mine,” which won the 2008 Slapering Hol chapbook prize. Her poems have also appeared in dozens of literary journals and anthologies. Information about events at the Silver Center is online at silver.plymouth.edu. On October 8th, 2015,The Weirs Times published a front page article on the Normandy: Sacrifice For Freedom Albert H. Small Student & Teacher Institute. We are happy to see a deserving New Hampshire team selected to participate. A student/teacher team from Moultonborough, New Hampshire has been chosen as one of fifteen teams from around the country to be accepted for this year’s Normandy: Sacrifice For Freedom Albert H. Small Student & Teacher Institute. Social Studies teacher Ms. Kelsie Brook Eckert and her student, Matthew Anderson, a junior at Moultonborough, are the first Granite State team to ever be selected over the course of the program’s seven years. They will join other student/teacher teams from around the country to participate in an extraordinary opportunity to tell the story of fallen WWII heroes who gave his or her life in World War II during or after the Normandy landings of D-Day and who is memorialized at the Normandy American Cemetery. The Moultonborough team will select a hero from New Hampshire and Matthew will honor that hero with a eulogy delivered at the Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach in France this coming June. Eckert, now in her third year at Moultonborough, previously worked as a graduate assistant for National History Day (NHD), the organizers of the event, when she was doing graduate studies at Plymouth State. Her relationship with NHD encouraged her to hold a school wide competition for the Kenneth E,

Matthew Anderson, a junior at Moultonborough Academy and Social Studies teacher Kelsie Eckert have been selected to participate in the Normandy: Sacrifice For Freedom Albert H. Small Student & Teacher Institute. In June they will both take an all expenses paid trip to Normandy, France to pay tribute to a fallen New Hampshire Hero from D-Day. Behring National History Day Contest where students do research within a particular historical theme. Each year students from Moultonborough went to the National Finals in Maryland. “Every year at the Nationals they advertised the Normandy trip,” said Eckert. “It seemed like such an amazing opportunity and I came to realize that it was possible for a student from Moultonborough to participate. Still, I wasn’t sure how many kids would be interested in going through the application process since there was so much involved.” Eckert posed the idea to her Advanced Placement U.S. History class, which had four students, and they all wanted to do it. “Only one student could go if picked,” said Eckert. “So, we came up with a

plan and did a school wide essay contest.” Fifteen students submitted anonymous essays related to the theme of why they should go to Normandy. The school’s history teachers reviewed the essays and picked Matthew’s essay as the winner. (He was one of the four students in Eckert’s AP U.S History class.) “Matt really lives and breathes history,” said Eckert. “He plans to be a history major in college.” Eckert and her student underwent a pretty rigorous application process. They both wrote essays. Matthew’s was on why he should be selected and Eckert’s was on how this trip would benefit her students. She also wrote a letter introducing Matthew and explaining why Moultonborough selected him for the program and See normandy on 22

Supports Cruz To The Editor: Is ours a government of the people or a government of the Washington Cartel and donor class? Favors to the donor class and their political allies damage our government of the people. Too frequently we have seen wealthy individuals provide sizeable campaign donations to members of both political parties in order to obtain unreasonable favors in return. There was a case of misuse of eminent domain in New Jersey where a government entity was encouraged by donations to their political campaigns, to take the land and home of a private property owner, “for the public good. Taking land for the building of a railroad was and still is considered a public benefit, and a legitimate use of Eminent Domain. But taking land to build a casino is not a valid use of eminent domain. This twisting of the law was encouraged and made possible by donations accepted by some in the New Jersey political class in return for some future favor. The fact that this casino was an ill advised investment that later went bankrupt was no comfort to the homeowner whose property was taken and was forced to move. This benefit for an individual or a small class of people in return for political donations is become more and more frequent and is very wrong. Entrenched politicians

Some familiar names of long serving politicians on both sides of the aisle include former Senator Bob Dole, John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, Governor Branstad of Iowa (of ethanol fame), Bubba and Hillary. All of them have received sizeable campaign contributions from Donald Trump. Included in his contribution list are the most liberal Nanny mayors of New York city including the most recent one who won’t support his police department and Governor Cuomo who says conservatives are not welcome in New York. Most of these people despise Ted Cruz because they see him as one who will not and can not be purchased.. I understand one of the boats had a navigation problem, either mechanical or human error, and it wandered into Iranian waters. But why couldn’t the other boat tow it away from Iranian waters? *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Better Uses

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I arrived home from work the other day and noticed that something just didn’t seem right. My mailbox, an old rectangular metal box with a hinged top lid, seemed in distress. Designed originally to handle your common everyday envelope and even the occasional folded magazine or catalogue, my mailbox now had an abnormally large postcard protruding from its opening where it had been stuffed. As I approached the mailbox carefully, I did notice that the giant postcard contained the picture of a giant yet familiar eyeball. It was rather terrifying. What sort of sick, cruel prank was this? As I got closer the giant eyeball began to look more familiar. I cautiously grabbed the giant postcard and started to pull it from the box. I noticed there was another abnormally large postcard with a familiar eyeball behind it and behind that a couple of smaller, yet larger than normal postcards and some actual letters. I struggled for a bit to get the entire mess out of the mailbox and after a minute or two, I succeeded. I was amazed that the giant postcards had even fit into the mailbox; I applaud my mailman for a job well done. They were big enough to use as sun shield for the front window of my SUV. I carried it all into the

house and dropped it onto the kitchen counter as they were becoming heavy in my hands. One of the large postcards fell to the floor in a loud crash, barely missing my cat, who ran for cover in fear as the familiar eyeball now took the shape of the giant monstrous head which I now clearly recognized. Yes, it was the face of one of the many candidates for president. The postcard, bigger than the candidate’s actual head, stared up at me from the floor as chills ran through my spine. Within the rest of the mail on the counter were the smaller postcards with slightly smaller faces of other candidates, These I had seen before and had been familiar with over the years. Though I had never bothered to read them, I never threw them out. I had found them very useful in the past to be used as drink coasters, flash cards and even insulation. Now there were these new giant postcards with candidates faces on them. Bigger and more obnoxious than any man or woman living could have ever imagined. My first thought was to be rid of the beast, to tear it into tiny pieces and place it in the garbage, but I could see that might take hours. After a deep breath, I sat down to think rationally about how to deal with this new menaces which would be invading my mailbox in the coming weeks. There was nothing I could do to stop them. After all, I was a registered member of a political party so I must accept the consequences. After a few minutes, I came to realize that I was once afraid of the smaller postcards as well when I had first found them in my mailbox, but, as men-

tioned earlier, I eventually found a good use for them and so, I could find a good use for these as well. I soon realized these giant postcards could be used as placemats for dinner; up to six full courses could be served at once (as well as wine for each course). They would also make great bathroom mats for when you are trying to keep the good ones clean as company is arriving tomorrow. If one of the candidates on a giant postcard is elected president in November then I already have my Halloween mask for 2017. Four or five of these giant postcards taped together will make a great room divider. Maybe one could be attached to a pole in the garden to keep the crows away, I’m sure I will think of plenty more as time goes on. Once I realized the plethora of uses for these over sized, completely obnoxious political mailers, I began to panic. The primary is only two weeks away and after that, there will be no more for awhile. So, I decided the best thing would be to drive around my neighborhood and go to homes where I saw these giant eyeballs on giant postcards sticking out of other people’s mailboxes and ask them if it would be okay if I took them off their hands. I found that humans by nature are very generous because not one of them denied my request. In fact some were ecstatic and promised that they would just leave them in a bundle on their steps for me to take as needed. I thanked them but felt a little guilty. They didn’t know what they were missing. www.BrendanTSmith. com

Mayor de Blasio: Hypocrite Hooked on Hollywood Cash Because the crime rate is zero, the potholes are all fixed and homelessness has been completely eradicated, New by Michelle Malkin York City Syndicated Columnist Mayor Bill de Blasio now has time to focus on what really matters to Big Apple taxpayers: Racial quotas in Hollywood. Social justice warrior de Blasio took to Twitter last week to lambaste the 2016 Academy Awards nominations, which did not include any black actors or actresses. “#OscarsSoWhite says it all,” de Blasio carped. “(Wife) @ Chirlane and I are sick of only one kind of America being celebrated.” Radical race-hustling director Spike Lee is leading a boycott of the awards ceremony scheduled next month in Los Angeles. Actress Jada Pinkett Smith, whose actor/director husband Will Smith was snubbed for his performance in the NFL drama “Concussion,” took to Facebook this week to rally “people of color” not to watch or attend the gala event. Director Michael Moore hitched himself to the whiny wagon of 1 percenters. Pressure is mounting on host and comedian Chris Rock to bow out in solidarity. A panicked Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (who is black), is promising expedited “change” to mollify the grievance mob led by shakedown artist Al Sharpton. They’ll never admit it, but for the guardians of the Academy, “change” means inevitable

quota-based admissions to their elite club, where new candidates must traditionally be sponsored by two current members and demonstrate “exceptional achievement in the field of theatrical motion pictures.” The transformation is “not coming as fast as we would like,” Isaacs bleated as she vowed to take more aggressive steps to “diversify” as part of the Academy’s “A2020” plan. Is this what “people of color” in the performing arts really want? Fealty based first and foremost on skin tone and not on talent and ability? Specially appointed members of the Academy chosen solely because of their race, gender or oppressed status who will be beholden to vote only for fellow tokens from their respective tribes? What exactly will make the likes of Spike Lee and company happy if not de facto or de jure Oscars quotas and affirmative action points for minority entertainers? Do they think ghettoized new categories for “Best Black Actor” and “Best Black Actress” constitute progress and equality? Do they honestly believe that casting doubt on the achievements of all non-white thespians who earn nominations as a result of this politically correct hectoring is good for the profession? Now, let’s call de Blasio and his bean-counting wife out on the red carpet. If this “diversity”-driven duo is truly “sick” of Hollywood’s white cis-hetero-patriarchal oppressors, are they ready to boycott the billions that the entertainment industry pours into New York City until their

A Day At New Hampshire Right to Life

On January 16, New Hampshire Right to Life held its annual March for Life event in downtown Concord. Despite wintry weather by Jane of ice and snow, Cormier over 300 pro-life Hooksett, NH. citizens braved the cold to stand in solidarity with NHRTL and its mission of supporting Life from conception to natural death. Although it was erroneously reported that only two dozen pro-life supporters attended this event, the truth is the March for Life was well-attended from citizens as far north as Colebrook and far south as Nashua. The March is always well-attended as supporters understand this annual event is much more than just a “protest”. It is a full day of activities, prayer, information on Life issues, and fellowship. And, the days’ events begin at See malkin on 28 the Concord Landfill.

Why the Concord Landfill you may ask? Because in 1988, the remains of between fifty and eighty aborted children were discovered discarded at the landfill - discarded as though they were nothing but ordinary trash. NHRTL gathers at the landfill before each March for Life and remembers those lost to abortion. This year, Pastor Garrett Lear led the short memorial service with about 40 people in attendance. St. John the Evangelist Church was the next stop, offering a special Mass in celebration of Life. This mass is always ‘standing room only’ and this year was no exception. After the mass, participants then traveled to the steps of the New Hampshire State House for the annual March For Life Rally. Of the approximate 300 attendees, many were young supporters. Approximately, one third of those attending the rally this year were under the age of See cormier on 27

Realism Not Rhetoric Needed to Defeat ISIS Warns Gates NEW YORK - Former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates slammed both the Obama Administration and the Presidential by John J. Metzler primary candiSyndicated Columnist dates calling for long-term realism in America’s fight against the Islamic State terrorism. “I think that the president has all along underestimated ISIS, has underestimated the degree of fear that they have been able to provoke among a lot of Americans,” Gates stated. Speaking at a forum at New York’s prestigious Council on Foreign Relations, Secretary Gates also derided presidential hopefuls’ tough talk on terrorism stressing, “these men and women are making these broad pronouncements. It’s clear they don’t know what they’re talking about.” He opined, “So I think at the same time the Administration has underestimated the impact of ISIS and what it’s going to take to deal with ISIS, on the other side of the fence, you’re getting these simplistic and, frankly, ridiculous formulas on how they’re going to take care of the problem.” Secretary Gates stressed, “a problem like ISIS and the extrem-

ism associated with ISIS is complex, it’s going to be hard, and it’s going to take a lot of time, and it’s going to take some sacrifice. And there are no easy solutions, and there certainly are no quick solutions.” Tom Brokaw, veteran NBC reporter served as moderator setting the stage: “upheaval in the Middle East, jihadism, and dealing with a war that’s a clash of cultures as much as it is a clash of nationstates,” confronts the U.S. domestically and internationally. Robert Gates who served as Defense Secretary under President George W. Bush and Barack Obama offered a sobering and stoic overview of key issues facing the USA internationally. Regarding Russia’s role in supporting the Assad regime in Syria while also attacking terrorists, the Secretary stated, that as he and former Secretary of State Condi Rice wrote, “diplomacy is determined by the facts on the ground, not vice versa. And the Russians are helping the Syrian government change the facts on the ground… But the point is that I think, his (Putin’s) collaboration with the Iranians, and with the Syrian regime is working pretty well for him right now in terms of diplomacy.” He cautioned however, “But long term, I think he has made a mistake, in the respect that most of the Russian Muslims are Sunni

and most of the Muslims in the world are Sunni. And he’s aligned with a minority element of the Islamic world. So that may come back to bite him.” Viewing the wider ISIS threat beyond the U.S., Secretary Gates asserted, “the Russians and the Chinese are both worried about ISIL and about Islamic terrorism…I do

think that Putin would like to see ISIL controlled and contained and destroyed. I think they do see ISIL as a danger to them.” Considering China, Robert Gates told the audience, “I don’t believe that China has any intention of engaging in a global arms race with the United States. I do believe See Metzler on 26

What Are Elections For? After months of watching all sorts of political polls, we are finally just a few weeks away from actually beginning to see some voting in primaby Thomas Sowell ry elections. Syndicated Columnist Polls let people vent their emotions. But elections are held to actually accomplish something. The big question is whether the voters themselves will see elections as very different from polls. If Republican voters have consistently delivered a message through all the fluctuating polls over the past months, that message is those voters’ anger at the Republican establishment, which has grossly betrayed the promises that got a Republican Congress elected. Whether the issue has been securing the borders, Obamacare, runaway government spending or innumerable other concerns, Republican candidates have promised to fight the Obama administration’s policies-- and then caved when crunch time came for Congress to vote. The spectacular rise, and persistence, of Republican voter support for Donald Trump in the polls ought to be a wake-up call for the Republican establishment. But smug know-it-alls can be hard to wake up. Even valid criticisms of Trump can miss the larger point that Republican voters’ turning to such a man is a sign of desperation and a telling indictment of what the Republican establish-

ment has been doing for years-which they show pathetically few signs of changing. Seldom have the Republicans seemed to have a better chance of winning a presidential election. The Democrats’ frontrunner is a former member of an unpopular administration whose record of foreign policy failures as Secretary of State is blatant, whose personal charm is minimal and whose personal integrity is under criminal investigation by the FBI. Meanwhile, the Republicans have fielded a stronger set of presidential aspirants than they have had in years. Yet it is by no means out of the question that the Republicans will manage to blow this year’s opportunity and lose at the polls this November. In other times, this might just be the Republicans’ political problem. But these are not other times. After seven disastrous years of Barack Obama, at home and overseas, the United States of America may be approaching a point of no return, especially in a new age of a nuclear Iran with long-range missiles. The next President of the United States will have monumental problems to untangle. The big question is not which party’s candidate wins the election but whether either party will choose a candidate that is up to the job. That ultimate question is in the hands of Republicans who will soon begin voting in the primaries. Their anger may be justified, but anger is not a sufficient reason for choosing a candidate in a desperate time for the future of this nation. And there is such See Sowell on 26

Tom Brady 38 and Peyton Manning 39. lines and also touched on two things that most of us seriously ponder—often excessively. Aging and mortality. So we celebrated the spectacle of a 39-yearold future Hall-of-Fame quarterback taking on a 38-year-old future Hallof-Fame quarterback— with a Super Bowl berth at stake. The aging process brings humility to every athlete, sooner or later. So when someone like Brady cheats both Mother Nature and Father Time—as he did this past season—it not only brings joy to Patriot fans but it also gives us all hope that maybe one CAN stay young forever, in a sports Shangri-La. Who has never dreamed such dreams? Think of Ponce de Leon’s tragic quest for the mythical “Fountain of Youth,” or Oscar Wilde’s novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” Dorian Gray sold his soul in exchange for eternal youth. Rather than age himself, a picture instead reflected the ravages of time and personal choices. Of course, as with Ponce de Leon, it all ended badly for Dorian Gray. Still, we rejoice when oldsters triumph. Think Mariano Rivera. Adam Vinitiari. David Oritz. Do you recall Jack Nicklaus winning the Masters Golf Tournament at age 46? Or better yet, Tom Watson falling just a stroke short of a sixth British Open title at the age of

60, in 2009? How about Ted Williams winning a batting title by hitting .388 at almost 40 years of age? Or Babe Ruth hitting three tape measure home runs in a single game in Pittsburgh, also at age 40? Or Michael Jordan racking up triple doubles at the same age? And you have to love long distance swimmer Diana Nyad, who at the age of 64 completed a 110 mile swim from Cuba to Florida. It took her 53 hours. Or Gordie Howe. The NHL legend made his debut with the Detroit Red Wings in 1946. In 1969, the 40year-old-Howe scored 100 points for Detroit—44 goals and 59 assists. He later played for the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association, winning the WHA’s MVP award in 1974. Later, back in the NHL with the Hartford Whalers, Howe played on a line that included his sons Mark and Marty. Howe concluded his career in 1980, when at age 51 he played in all of the Whalers’ 80 regular season games, scoring 15 goals to help Hartford make the NHL playoffs. The aforementioned stars—and others like them—created excitement which sports fans converted to passion, an ingredient for eternal youth. Or at least youthful outlooks. So Tom Brady, whatever you’re doing, please keep it up. Perhaps it’s your supermodel wife that helps See moffett on 22

Candia ROad Brewing Co,

Manchester, NH

by Jim MacMillan Contributing Writer

As stated before, winter is the time to sample heavier beers that go with that season. There are so many styles that fit this category that one might get overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of heavier brews to try. One style that caught my eye recently made me think of the homelands of Scotland (my heritage) where brewing stronger beers is more a birth right than customary. Under a varied category of Scottish and Irish ales appears Scottish Heavy or sometimes known as Wee-Heavy. The wee means small just like the giant in the fable Jack and the Beanstalk is ‘wee.’ Today we’ll see what Nepenthe’s Wee-Heavy is about. Candia Road Brewing Company, 840 Candia Road, Manchester, NH, has been brewing and selling 22 oz bottles since 2011. They also have home brew supplies at their location which makes stopping in doubly exciting. Tom, the head brewer started home brewing years before they opened their doors to the public. Since then, they have offered at least eight varieties of brew styles including Picea which is brewed with spruce bows. Visit them on www. facebook.com/CandiaRoad-Brewing-Company116106775166830 The term Nepenthe (pronounced nee-pen-thA) relates to the banishing of grief or trouble from the

times of Homer’s Odyssey. This is the branding used by Candia Road for all of their releases. The plain brown wrapper style of label further adds to the curiosity of the buyer. At 10% ABV, Wee-Heavy is not small. But it misses the booziness one would expect of that high an ABV. The deep brown color and tan head is inviting. Your nose will pick up the slight aroma of the barrel aging (guessing bourbon barrels) but the taste is where this brew gets me confused. The lower mouthfeel and lack of maltiness made me question what I was sampling. It is not in the league of Founders Dirty Bastard or Oscar Blues Old Chub (both Scotch ales). Less than that, the malt character and barrel aging mixed interestingly, but not to where it was not very memorable.

According to the Beer Judge Certification Program website, a WeeHeavy style is supposed to exhibit strong maltiness and full mouthfeel... chewy if you want. You should also taste roasted malt and may even hint at sweetness. This example missed the mark by a bit, although it was a pleasant and balanced experience overall. You can purchase Nepenthe offerings at Casen-Keg, Meredith and Laconia just to name a few locations... brewed in New Hampshire for the love of the beer! Healthy Tip From Dr. Fink:

Boost Your Immune Function Fink Chiropractic & Natural Health Improvement Center

Every year the medical profession and government authorities encourage citizens in many developed countries to get immunized against the current form of influenza virus. While the decision to get vaccinated is an individual one with both pros and cons, consider that a natural approach, namely supplementation with specific nutrients such as Vitamin D, can boost immune function and may play an important role in the prevention of respiratory tract infections. During the winter months Vitamin D production in the skin declines, this happens because the most generally available source of Vitamin D is sunlight. Most immune cells contain vitamin D receptors that allow vitamin D to enter cells and exert its effects on immune cell behavior. In simple terms vitamin D appears to make immune cells better able to fulfill their primary functiondefense! I recommend vitamin D for all ages as

well as a variety of other vitamins and minerals that may be lacking in our diet. Don’t be fooled into thinking you are getting all you need in your diet. It’s best to check with a professional when deciding which to take. I recommend whole food supplements and carry an array of organically grown whole food supplements from Standard Process. Other ways to boost your immune system are of course to eat a balanced healthy diet, get plenty of fluids, especially fresh pure water. Get plenty of rest, if you find it difficult to get to sleep at night maybe you need to look at what your habits are and make some changes. I recommend no caffeine after lunch time, there are some refreshing choices that are calming. Don’t eat a heavy meal just before bed time, you need to allow time to digest. Shut down all the distractions like facebook, the news, and especially those crime and drama shows, who can sleep after watching some of those shows?! For more information,

Often these issues are exactly what you’d expect: weight, exercise, nutrition, quitting smoking, sleeping habits, etc. At the point an individual has decided to take the step to come to our office and seek information they are well ahead of the curve, but what about the rest of us? In my experience most people have at least one thing or sometimes many things they want to change in their health or life, but simply don’t. I’m right there too, sometimes! It’s a strange phenomenon but it’s what I call being “comfortably wrong” (Pink Floyd might call it, “comfortably numb”). People are oddly content to keep their current habits, even as these practices slowly decrease health, quality of life, and even rob years from their lives . Couch potatoes stay seated. Smokers keep smoking. Twinkies don’t eat themselves. We stick with our harmful habits, because we wrongly believe it’s just easier to keep the status quo. Instead of trying, we often settle for acceptance, which is on par with simply quitting. Deep down we know we are unhappy if we don’t feel well and aren’t being as healthy as possible, but that often doesn‘t create change. It’s Newton’s first law of motion: an object at rest stays at rest. In this situation we are just going to keep heading down the wrong road, because…..that’s what we do. We get caught in bad behavioral patterns. Work, eat, TV, sleep…..repeat for 50 years. This isn’t the life that we set out for, but it is often where we end up. Newton’s law also states

that the aforementioned object at rest will stay there until put under unequal forces. Meaning: if something is going to get rolling it needs a push. Here’s the thing, living in a comfortably wrong way doesn’t change for people until we get a big push and unfortunately for most people that big push is something often scary: heart attack, cancer, disease. This is what I want to encourage you to do: change now, don‘t wait for the bad to find you. Don’t let your health decisions be made for you, be proactive not reactive. Break free of living “comfortably wrong” by choice. The first step is to decide that you want to change. This sounds simplistic, but truly it’s the key. Decide you are fed up and realize that “comfortably wrong” living is really not easier or even comfortable: it takes an expensive toll on your health, life, and goals, and usually wallet (it’s cheaper to stay well, than to try to fix something.) Next make two lists: the first list is a list of all the goals you want to accomplish. Goals like walking daily, saving money for a trip with your newly found cigarette money, or fitting into your old pants….whatever, it doesn’t matter, as long as its important to you. The second list is of people who are counting on you to make these changes. Living comfortably wrong is a selfish endeavor. It requires you to put your wants ahead of others. Family, friends, co workers all count on you and need you in their lives. Don’t shortchange them, by living a unhealthy, unsatisfying life. Also, don’t forget to put yourself on that list because you deserve more too. Lastly, make a game plan or action steps. You’ve made the decision to change, you have in mind what you want to do, and who you need to do it for; now it’s time for action. In creating your game plan seek out people who have successfully achieved the goals you are after or consult your healthcare provider. Now execute the

plan! Accept it will be hard and challenging, but know that if you can hang on, it will get easier and easier. Remember the rest of Newton’s law: objects in motion stay in motion. Meaning: now that you are rolling towards your goals, you will keep right on going. All it takes is getting started!

Along with the tournament itself, the event and the accompanying attractions really do give it a festival feel. “No one is really coming here to win a Pond Hockey Championship, said Crowder. “People are really coming here to have a good time. Some of the events which used to be held on the ice in Meredith Bay will have to be moved on land to the parking

take players and spectators back and forth, said Crowder. Among the attractions will be a new setup of entertainment which will be provided by the Bank of NH Pavilion (formerly Meadowbrook) in Gilford. Other final preparations are being finalized as well. Two years ago, Crowder added Thermoformed Plastic Boards to surround each rink which

provided the opportunity to add an additional two rinks last year and and two more for the 2016 tournament. “The boards were really a significant investment for a small grass roots company like ours, said Crowder. “But it has been well worth it as we wanted to grow the tournament a bit and we wanted to get the most out of the space to try and get as many See hockey on 17

have their fun. The nesting territories, however, are an area where humans can lend a hand. A successful nesting season is critical for each wild bird species to achieve. The lifespan of an average songbird in your backyard is 4-6 years. The mortality rate for newborns is about 60%. You can help your birds survive each egg-laying season by performing some simple steps. Keep pets in human control during the spring seasons. This can be accomplished using dog-runners, leashes or outdoor pens. Cats should remain indoors during this crucial time, as well. Use the broken tree limbs and branches from the winter season to create an impenetrable shelter for ground-nesting birds, such as cardinals. A brush pile on one corner of your property that measures 6 feet in diameter and 5 feet high provides an excellent advantage in keeping predators away from protected wild bird nests. Adult birds love to have their babies hatch into a soft, comfortable nest. The adults will continue to shelter hatchlings with their warm bodies well into the fledgling stage. They could also use a soft cushion to sit on. Nests made of branches and twigs can get a little uncomfortable over time. Just imagine how it would feel on your backside? You can help, however. At the start of each winter season, we tell our audience of civic groups and school classrooms to save every strand of hair you can find. Human hair, dog hair, even horse hair. Go to you local barber or hairdresser and

bring along a large bag. Ask if you can sweep the floors for all the hair you can find! You might be surprised at the response. They have probably heard it before. If not, inform them of your intentions and they might just start saving the clippings for future use. After you have gathered and saved the hair, stuff all you can inside a suet basket or mesh-style bag. Onion bags work very well. Hang these new hair holders outside, preferably near the tree line in your backyard or patio and watch the action. Not all birds eat birdseed. However, all birds build nests and you may be pleasantly surprised at a new wild bird species that you witness availing itself of this wonderful, soft bounty. This is an excellent project for children, home-schoolers, and scouts of all ages. Next fall you can start the season off right by saving your family’s clippings after hair cuts. Don’t throw away your pet hair when they start shedding, save it for a rainy day next spring for the birds. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Steve White is a contributing author in major publications, a guest lecturer at major conventions in Atlanta and St. Louis as well as the host of WEZS 1350AM radio show “Bird Calls” with Lakes Region Newsday @ 8:30AM. While there they will tour the World War II Memorial and attend a dinner hosted by the White House Historical Association. Next is an all expense paid trip to Normandy where they will visit museums, historic sites and churches that were used as field hospitals. The final stop is a trip to the Normandy American Cemetery where Matthew will present a eulogy at the grave of the New Hampshire hero. “When Matthew presents the eulogy, he will be reading a eulogy for someone he knows, someone whose story he is responsible for telling, said National History Day Executive Director Dr.Cathy Gorn. “It results in a powerful, and often tearful, understanding of the sacrifice Matthew’s Silent Hero made it World War II. “By going to Normandy it will really help to make it more real in the classroom, said Eckert. “I am also really interested in learning from the people in Normandy who are running the trip how they take a location such as the gravesites and bring it to life. I would like to do that with some of New Hampshire’s own historical sites to use for teaching. We hope to bring you updates on the journey to Normandy by Ms. Eckert and Matthew Anderson and we congratulate them on their selection.

DEAR TIM: I’ve got a real mess on my hands. I removed ivy from my brick home and the brick is now splotchy. The brick has a slight sanded texture and a light color -- except where the ivy was growing. When I removed the ivy, the sand came off and exposed a darker red color of the brick. It’s a very light coating of sand. Is there a way to add the sand back to make the brick appear uniform in color once again? What are the challenges? What are my options? What would you do? --Jim H., Falls Church, Va. DEAR JIM: The photograph you sent sure tells the tale. The brick does look like it has seen better days, that’s for sure. Some find ivy growing on brick to be attractive. From a builder’s standpoint, it’s a huge mistake. You’re very lucky because the damage from the ivy’s tenacious roots can be significant once it starts to find its way into hairline cracks of the mortar. It also traps moisture against the brick and that’s never a good thing. I’m afraid I don’t have great news for you about restoring the brick to its

The splotchy appearance of this brick home, caused by ivy, can be transformed so it looks much better. original appearance. The light sand coating that was on the brick, and is still present where there was no ivy growing, was created in the kiln at the brick plant. The clay, before it was fired in the kiln, was coated with the sand that it picked up from the mold boxes used to create the individual brick. This sand is a release agent so the clay comes out of the molds with ease. Bakers do the same thing when they flour cake pans. Often you’ll see flour on the baked cake rounds, and the same thing happens with the sand on the brick once it comes out of the kiln. The problem is the sand adheres to the clay via a crystalline attachment as

the heat of the kiln changes the mineralogy of the clay, turning it into a rock. During this transformation, tiny clay crystals grab onto the sand and can hold it in place for years if the brick weathers normally and you don’t pressure wash the exterior of your home. Trying to come up with some clear adhesive to use to attach the sand would be like trying to find a penny dropped at random in a pond. When you apply some liquids to brick, it darkens them. What’s more, over time ultraviolet light from the sun would undoubtedly break down the adhesive. There’s the issue of matching the sand. Sand is not all the same. Sand is

and tables make it a cozier place to have lunch or celebrate après ski. We took over a corner of the pub and chose comfy seats. There are good choices on the menu and at the bar New England microbrews are served. Our food came out all at once. Sitting with me, David had a yummy burger and fries and Lori had a salad with grilled chicken. They appeared to enjoy lunch. I can vouch my hot chocolate was chocolatey and hot and I enjoyed my chicken tenders with a side of coleslaw very much. After lunch we enjoyed lounging

around and talking about all things winter. Soon we noticed that the snowstorm was really starting to kick into high gear. I was ready to hit the slopes while some people had to hit the road early to get home. The skiing in the heavy falling snow was fun as the snow accumulated and the snow conditions just got better. Crotched’s trails are lined with fan guns and they were blowing lots of man-made snow too. The Rocket highspeed quad is speedy and it is easy to get in a lot of runs. simply small pieces of rock and stone, and you know how many different colors of rock there are! To make the job look right, you’d have to get a perfect match on the sand -and that’s just the beginning of your challenges. Then you would have to apply the sand to just the areas where the ivy was and feather and blend it into the brick. Don’t underestimate the degree of difficulty of this task. My suggestion is to go to the most remote side of your home, maybe behind a bush or your air conditioning compressor and do a small test. I’m suggesting a small test on several bricks down low to the ground. Take the photo you sent to me to two or three local brickyards at mid-morning or mid-afternoon and talk with the general manager. You want someone who really knows brick and has sold it for no less than 15 or 20 years. Tell this person what you told me. My guess is he’ll suggest you use a very mild buffered acid to clean the brick. Some companies call these detergents, but they’re almost always a mild acid. I would never consider using a pressure washer of any type for this job. All sorts of issues come into play, especially since you have the sanded texture. Before you start to clean the test area, take good “before” photos. Clean the test bricks as directed by the general manager and the label of the cleaner, and do it at a time of day when they are in the shade. Again, you’re just cleaning a few bricks. There’s no doubt you’ll remove some of the sand, and your objective is to see whether the clean bricks with

no sand will pass muster. It could take several days for the bricks to dry fully, revealing their new shade. Wait a week if necessary. I’m convinced you’ll be able to create a uniform appearance throughout your brick exterior, although it’s going to be a somewhat darker in appearance overall. If you must have a lighter appearance, you have another option. You can whitewash the entire home with a very light coat of whitewash. I have several how-to columns about using whitewash at my AsktheBuilder.com website. They describe the process in great detail. You can tint the whitewash so it’s more of an ivory color that will give you the appearance you now have with the sanded brick. You can even add some silica or fine colored sand to the whitewash to create a sanded appearance. It takes some practice working with the whitewash to get the exact texture and appearance you want. I had the opportunity to work with whitewash on one of my jobs years ago and it’s a magical material. The lime in the whitewash attaches to the brick much the same way the clay attached to the sand. Small crystals grow and it can last many decades if done right. Need an answer? All of Tim’s past columns are archived for free at www. AsktheBuilder.com. You can also watch hundreds of videos, download Quick Start Guides and more, all for free.

Eric Hoffer’s shrewd insight into the success of charismatic leaders was that the “quality of ideas seems to play a minor role, What matters, he pointed out, “is the arrogant gesture, the complete disregard of the opinion of others, the singlehanded defiance of the world. Is that the emotional release that Republican voters will be seeking when they begin voting in the primaries? that they intend to establish regional dominance and believe that that is, that comports with their history and their role in the world.â€? He added ominously, “On the military side, by 2020 the Chinese will have about 350 surface warships and submarines. And the United States will have about 70 in that region.â€? The U.S. Navy’s steep decline is part and parcel of the Obama Administration’s massive military budget cuts which since 2011 alone have slashed $485 billion from defense spending. An exchange on North Korea’s leadership brought a degree of levity if not gallows humor, “we’re now in our third generation of Kims, and with each successive generation we’ve been swimming in a shallower and shallower part of the gene pool. My worry about Kim Jong-un is not only that he’s dangerous, but that he’s stupid.â€? Regarding Beijing’s influence over the Pyongyang regime, Secretary Gates added that “China has influence in North Korea, but it doesn’t have control.â€? He views North Korea’s nuclear proliferation as “a very dangerous situation.â€? Interestingly, Secretary Gates shed light on an overlooked option for the USA in the global war of ideas. During the Cold War, “You had Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty‌ So you had this Wurlitzer of strategic communications that was a big part, I think, of success in the Cold War. That’s all been basically dismantled.â€? A big mistake. Given the current global chaos, we should heed Secretary Gates sober assessment while realizing that we must settle in for a long term and focused response. John J. 25. The idea that the Pro-Life movement is supported only by the older generation is no longer valid. Pro-Life youth groups and organizations are growing leaps and bounds. Thankfully, these youth will be our Pro-Life leaders of tomorrow. After a short introduction by Jane Cormier, President of NHRTL, the Rally featured a prayer by Pastor Garrett Lear, followed by NHRTL Educational Trust Chair, Fr. Christian Tutor, who then presented the peaceful protocols to be followed by all marchers. Led by the Knights of Columbus, all marchers lined up and processed peacefully and prayerfully down North and South Main Street, back to the St. John the Evangelist Community Center. The ending of the actual March was marked by supporters placing rose petals into a small white coffin, remembering the innocent lives lost to abortion. As the marchers entered the Community Center, they were greeted to a veritable feast of food and drink, all offered by the Concord Catholic Daughters of America. After lunch at the Community Center, NHRTL offered a special guest speaker. This years’ speakers were Brad and Jesi Smith from SaveThe1, a pro-life organization dedicated to saving the 1 percent of children conceived in rape, incest, and fetal anomalies. Their presentation was moving and hopeful, and offered those in attendance, much information on how our culture tends to support abortion and death, rather than true medical

care and life. As the day of activities wrapped up, all audience members were given a “Life Bill Legislation Sheet which offered information on upcoming Life legislation in our NH State House. A prayer was then offered and NHRTL March For Life event ended for 2016. Anyone interested in becoming active in the Pro Life movement should contact NHRTL at nhrtl.org. There is resource information available on this site as well as ways to help build a culture of Life here in the Granite State. The mission of New Hampshire Right to Life is to foster respect for all human life from the moment of fertilization to natural death, regardless of age, gender, stage of development, degree of dependency, race or ethnicity or social status, without exception and to promote the right to life as the paramount issue through educational, legislative, political events and social media forums and all other lawful activities adhering to the Life Principles.

utopian ideals of manufactured racial parity are achieved? In an open love letter to Tinseltown in 2014, de Blasio boasted that since 2004, “Hollywood’s financial imprint on our city has grown from $5 billion to $7.1 billion.” The self-proclaimed warrior against income inequality enthusiastically doubled down on government subsidy programs to the Hollywood elite, vowing to “maintain the policies and practices that spurred this expansion while strategically investing in new projects to grow and diversify the industry.” “Investing,” of course, means using the power of government to redistribute the hard-earned tax dollars of lower- and middle-income workers to millionaire and billionaire studio owners in the TV and film industry. On top of the city’s subsidies, New York State offers myriad special tax

breaks, credits, and rebates worth an estimated $420 million to lure Hollywood to the East Coast. De Blasio’s bowing and scraping bordered on an R-rating. “In New York City, the TV and film industry has a true partner,” he gushed, “not to mention a mayor who will always be slightly in awe of the work you do.” Hooked on Hollywood cash, de Blasio’s outrage about #OscarsSoWhite is so contrived it bounces like a fake check. As usual, the left’s hashtag warriors are all show and no go. toring their transit from Kuwait to Bahrain? If they did communicate their situation, what were the instructions they received from higher command? It appears to me the personnel on the riverine boats and the command hierarchy viewed the movement of the boats as a routine operation, and they were caught off guard by the problems encountered, and they were not prepared to conduct contingency operations. It reminds me of the capture of the USS Pueblo off of North Korea many years ago. This incident could embolden the Iranians and other unfriendly countries to test our military prowess. Donald A. Later in the afternoon high school racers were training, running a brush gate course on one side of the trail. There is good terrain for all abilities. There is a nice gentle route all the way from the summit that follows the blue square trail Milky Way,

connects to the green circle trails of Super Nova and Comet for a long ride of 1 Ÿ mile back to the chairlift. After all my writer friends left I hung out in the lodge and waited for my night skiing friends to arrive. Becca, Jeremy, Steve and I are trying to make night skiing on Tuesday nights a good habit. A couple weeks ago we skied Pats Peak and I am sure we’ll hit Gunstock soon. Becca has a season pass at Crotched and was the first to show up, she came straight from work in southern New Hampshire. two runs before Jeremy and Steve showed up at the lift. Night tickets are just $30 for the 6pm to 9pm hours. More deals can be found on-line at CrotchedMtn.com. We told jokes on the lift ride up and skied all the trails by making many turns. We took a hot chocolate break and I believe more chicken tenders were consumed before going back out for more skiing. I didn’t quite make it to closing, I was tired; but my friends made it to closing! Crotched does something that no other ski area in New England does—it is open until 3am every Friday and Saturday night now through February. I stayed up to mid-night once but this is for the amusement of college students and young people. They have live music and a bonfire along with freestyle events and skiing and riding until 3 am. They even do a re-groom of the slopes at 9 pm. Did I tell you Fridays and Saturday night until 3 am? Have Fun. Amy Patenaude is an avid skier/outdoor enthusiast from Henniker, N.H.
