*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Back To Normal

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Do you hear what I hear? It’s the most wonderful time of the year. For a little while anyway. Now that the primary in New Hampshire is almost here, it will be time to get back to normal. Nothing makes us more aware of this return to normalcy than when we sit down at night after a long hard day at work to turn on the television to catch the local news and maybe a favorite show or two. Since last summer we have been bombarded by the repetitious and tedious television ads either promoting one candidate or tearing down another. Promises of bringing real change, making great things happen, starting over and making sure everyone pays their fair share have been drilled into our brains for months. Countless millions of dollars have been spent by the candidates and Political Action Committees simply to get us to vote for their guy or gal on February 9th. It has been impossible to turn on the TV for more than a few minutes without one of these ads playing. After only a few weeks it became maddening, after a few months it was to the point of unsustainability where we knew that we could not take much

more and then, when we are just inches from the breaking point, they will be gone. There will be no more promises of who is better than whom, which person is more capable of leading our country and which person will cause the most harm. We will finally get back to reality Soon now, when I sit down after that hard day and turn on the television I can relax knowing that I am once again in familiar territory. It will be nice to once again see Bernie & Phyls can give me a better deal than Jordan’s furniture and vice versa. It’ll be nice to feel safe knowing once again that one car dealer can give me the lowest price of any other car dealer in the area and that the other car dealer who is supposed to be the one they are beating is also offering me deals that are better than their competitor claim. It’ll be comforting once again, after all these many months of political ads making me false promises, that there will be room once again for the television stations to bring back ads hyping the latest gadget that will change my life forever and not only that it will only cost me $19.95 (plus shipping). As if that isn’t enough to make me feel good, I can get the second one absolutely free (plus shipping). Of course, I realize that four years from now both of these gadgets will more than likely be sitting in a drawer or closet somewhere collecting dust and really did nothing at all to change my life, but hey, it was nice to dream. No longer will I see cutesy political commercials full of happy smiling faces telling me a certain candi-

date will be the best thing for America followed seconds late by a more ominous looking and sounding commercial telling me that the same candidate will be the worst thing for this country. I will be able to relax as I hear the commercials of drugs with funny names like “Thiselfixya and “Duzsumthing and how they can make my life better while at the same time presenting me with the side effects that might make me feel even worse than I before I started taking the drug; message and time efficiency that candidates should pay attention to in future campaigns. There are lots of other ads that I will be glad to see back on once the campaign ads are gone. The ones about food products full of preservatives and additives that will be delicious are a one of my favorites. Of course, all this will be short lived. In only a couple of months the airwaves will slowly fill up with more campaign ads as state races heat up and especially when the presidential nominees are picked. (Of course, living in New Hampshire you will stumble upon a Massachusetts station occasionally where they are only getting started.) In the meantime, I will enjoy it while I can. Getting away from watching all these ads promising me a better life if I just vote for someone over another and focusing on what is really important to me. Like that pocket hose thingamajig. I really think that could make my life so much better. Brendan’s books are available for sale at his website... www.BrendanTSmith.com

cebook or who visits my Homepage it’s obvious I am a supporter of Sen. Marco Rubio. I have admired Senator Rubio for his brilliance, his grasp of the issues, his humility and integrity, and his ability to articulate where we are today and what we must do to get our country back on the right track. His courage, passion, determination and ability to work respectfully and effectively with others, gives me hope for the future of our nation. We have had a number of great conservative Republican candidates from which to choose but the criteria I used to make my choice included first; being right on the social, fiscal, and constitutional issues that matter to me and being supportive of basic Republican principles. Next, I wanted to get behind a candidate that I really believed could win, not only in the primary, but in the general election in November. Finally I wanted someone who would actually be able to get something accomplished once elected to put our country back on the right track. Rubio fits all of these criteria and represents a new generation that recognizes the history of our country and former generations and knows we need to be accountable to the next generation. He has a hopeful vision for the future as one of freedom and opportunity and believes in American exceptionalism. See woods on 19

Who Signed the 2016 Presidential Pledge? To The Editor: Before you vote in the New Hampshire First in the Nation Primary, you need to know who did and who did not sign the 2016 Presidential Pledge. Every candidate (Republican and Democrat) whose name has appeared on either the National or State polling list as a Presidential Candidate received a copy of and was asked to sign the Pledge. The Presidential Candidates who signed the Pledge are as follow: 1. Senator Rand Paul 2. Businessman, Donald Trump and 3. Governor Chris Christie. By signing the Pledge, these three candidates have gone on the record and promised to the voters that they will work tirelessly to uphold the

EXPATRIATES AND EX-PATRIOTS Sports bring people together—in many ways and in many places. I once saw a man wearing a Red Sox shirt in remote central Afghanistan, which was cause to connect and make a new friend. Orange County, California, is not quite as remote, but it’s still a good distance from New England. As I was in the Golden State during the recent Patriots-Broncos AFC Championship Game, I figured it might be fun to watch the Brady-Manning gunfight at a sports bar. So I did some homework and found an Irish Pub in Tustin—Ye Auld Dubliner—as a venue to watch the big game. With so many New Englanders (like meself) being of Irish extract, it seemed a natural place to find kindred spirits—New England expatriates, if you will. And supposedly the Dubliner was a favorite of Sam “The Bam” Cunningham, a USC grad, and one of the all-time great New England running backs. Maybe the ex-Patriot would show up and hang out with us expatriates! Having forgotten to borrow my brother’s #12 Brady shirt, I wore my green Plymouth State windbreaker—green being apropos for an Irish bar. And I made a deal with Beth, my Beloved Bronco Fan (BBF). I’d drive to the Dubliner and she’d drive back to San Clemente. I thought I’d gotten the best of that arrangement, but there was a caveat. She had to spend an hour at the “Fitness Elite

Mike Moffett ran into a couple fellow Plymouth State grads at the Dubliner Sports Bar in California: Leigh Poirier (‘95) and Johnny Walker (‘87). for Women” health club en route. But I was assured we had plenty of time. En route to the health club, BBF, who grew up near Denver, reminisced about the first Bronco team to go to the Super Bowl, with quarterback Craig Morton, defensive end Lyle Alzado, and the Orange Crush defense. As the club was for women only, I cooled my heels in the lobby for an hour. Then BBF looked in from the gym said she just needed 10 minutes in the locker room and we’d be off to the game. Over twenty minutes later I was still cooling my heels, and wondering if we’d get there in time for kick-off, or even a seat. (Try not to let this destroy your faith in the punctuality of women.) Eventually we were flying up I-5 toward Tustin. We left the highway and sped around corners—seemingly on two wheels—and through all too many traffic lights. BBF: You ran a red light! ME: I think it was orange. BBF: You’ll be seeing a lot of orange when the game starts. We got to the Dubliner a minute before kick-off. Naturally every seat was taken so we found places to stand. As the game was on every one of twenty big screens, we could see action in any direction. Patriot fans indeed abounded. I estimated at least 200, judging by apparel. Including BBF

there were approximately five Bronco fans, and one pathetic soul wearing a Browns jersey. My Plymouth State attire got some attention and I actually connected with several Plymouth alumni. Small world. Yes, it was a great game. The last-minute Brady to Gronk touchdown pass caused paroxysms of joy for the well-lubricated Patriot faithful. Only a twopoint conversion separated us from overtime and one of the great games in NFL history. It didn’t happen. A giant whoosh of disappointment left the Dubliner. The only consolation was I didn’t have to drive home. As we walked out, I caught BBF giving a surreptitious fist bump to a dude wearing an orange Peyton Manning jersey. C’est la vie. I suppose I’ll still watch the Super Bowl, sans Patriots. After all, it’s hard not to root for Manning, who is almost as old as I am. Maybe I’ll find something orange to wear on Sunday. After all, orange IS an Irish color too! Sports Quiz A Black History Month question: Who was the first African-American to be drafted by the NBA? (Answer follows) Born Today ... Teen Cruz and TerrorCoddler Obama The crack media buzzed this week with the discovery of a totally frontpage, newsbreaking, breathtaking videotape. by Michelle Malkin GOP presiSyndicated Columnist dential candidate and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, CNN reported, was caught on camera confessing how he “sought ‘world domination.’” Gasp! This is something voters need to know. Left-wing rag Mother Jones vigilantly covered the damning film clip and dove into the “eerie” details of Cruz’s “five-year plan” in which he “began plotting his path to the White House.” The New York Daily News ominously reported that the “unearthed” video showed that “Even when he was a teenager, 2016 contender Ted Cruz craved power.” Yep, teenager. The supposedly blockbuster viral videotape leaked by an anonymous classmate was made twenty-eight years ago, back when VHS players still existed and Cruz was a snarky, glib and overly grandiose 18-year old-high school student. Newsflash: If you are not snarky, glib, and overly grandiose at 18, you may be from a different planet. If you like Ted Cruz as I do, you’ll find the vintage late ‘80s video charming and funny. If you hate Ted Cruz, as so many in the Beltway media and political establishment do, you’ll find it an appalling confirmation that he’s the worst thing since Spam, lead poisoning and the dentist who killed Cecil the Lion. The same journalism industry that hyped the light-hearted antics

of a teenage Ted Cruz -- and investigated the juvenile delinquencies of Ben Carson, Marco Rubio and Mitt Romney with CSI-level fervor -- actively suppressed video of an adult Barack Obama partying with convicted domestic terrorists and an international terrorist mouthpiece. In 2003, when Obama was a 42-year-old state senator and rising Democratic star in Illinois, he delivered a gushing address at a farewell gala for Rashid Khalidi. At the time, Khalidi taught international studies and Middle Eastern studies at the University of Chicago, where Obama served as a law school lecturer. Khalidi is now an Arab Studies professor at Columbia University and directs the school’s federally subsidized Middle East Institute named after his anti-Israel, Blame America mentor, Arab academic Edward Said. In the 1970s, Palestinian-American Khalidi was quoted extensively as a de facto mouthpiece for Yasser Arafat and his State Department-designated terrorist outfit, the Palestinian Liberation Organization. Khalidi denies any official PLO role, but veteran journalist Martin Kramer compiled an extensive laundry list of articles and attributions describing Khalidi as “a PLO spokesman,” “a director of the Palestinian press agency [Wafa]” (where his wife, Mona, also worked), and “an Americaneducated Palestinian who teaches political science at the American University of Beirut and also works for the P.L.O.” Khalidi and his wife founded the Arab American Action Network, which as David Horowitz’s DiscoverTheNetworks.org reported, was “noted for its view that Israel’s creation in 1948 was a ‘catastrophe’

Planned Parenthood Funding Rears Its Ugly Head

Due to the votes of courageous Executive Councilors Wheeler, Kenney, and Sununu, taxpayer funding is no longer flowing to by Jane Cormier Planned ParentHooksett, NH. hood health centers here in NH. Under the continued scandals and propaganda, the Progressives in New Hampshire are working hard to put Planned Parenthood hands BACK into your pockets. Quite amazing to be sure. There are many parts to this puzzle, so hang on. A couple of weeks ago, a Texas grand jury, while ignoring evidence that a Houston Planned Parenthood was selling aborted baby parts, indicted David Daleiden, from The Center of Medical Progress. David Daleiden, an investigative journalist, went undercover and obtained many videos showing the abortion See malkin on 16 company was breaking state and

federal laws selling aborted baby parts for profit. Planned Parenthood has been unable to deny this evidence but has since cried “foul” bringing all their Progressive cohorts into the battle. Despite the fact that Daleiden uncovered this dirty and illegal enterprise, political forces have now seen fit to charge him, rather than investigate what these videos again and again brought to light. “The Center for Medical Progress uses the same undercover techniques that investigative journalists have used for decades in exercising our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and of the press, and follows all applicable laws,” says Daleiden. This is truly a kangaroo court. Now, we go back to last week. The NH State House debated HJR3, a resolution seeking to investigate abortion providers and stop the taxpayer funding of abortion clinics. Sad to say, this resolution was killed in the NH See cormier on 22

The Amethyst Initiative Inevitably in policy debates one side or the other compares the U.S. with Europe. From health by Ken Gorrell care and inNorthfield, NH. surance to passenger rail to taxes, Europeans are held up as either the example (usually by the Left) or counter-example (usually the Right). I’m not one who turns to the Old World for guidance on much of anything other than examples of what not to do (refugee immigration policy being the latest), but there is one thing that the Euro-

peans get right and that we got wrong in 1984 when we raised the minimum drinking age to 21 years old. It’s time to follow the Europeans on this issue. In most countries the drinking age is 18, but we raised it nationally to 21 with the stroke of Ronald Reagan’s pen. The bill had passed both houses of Congress unanimously, and the Feds used the threat of withholding eight percent of a state’s highway funds if it didn’t comply. Here’s yet another example of why I distrust bi-partisan legislation and loathe using federal money to “entice” states into giving up Tenth Amendment rights. The minimum drinking age issue doesn’t feature into the current election season, though I suspect that if asked at least Rand Paul

years after the onset of the pro-democracy revolts against authoritarian rulers in much of the Middle by John J. Metzler East, the heady Syndicated Columnist warm breezes of the Arab Spring have been replaced with swirling ill winds sweeping the region from Tunisia to Iraq. Governments were toppled, chaos ensued, and the genie of pent up political and economic frustrations turned violent. Syria, Libya and Yemen are wracked by violence. Egypt stepped back from the brink. Key regional states such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia now nervously monitor radical reverberations. Israel remains hyper cautious. U.S. policy appears bemused. The geopolitical shock waves from the Arab Spring continue through instability and civil war with tragic waves of refugees battering against Europe’s shores. Much of the chaos is political be is equally centered on the historic religious fault lines within Islam between the majority Sunni and the minority Shiites. Countries with a sectarian divide such as Syria are torn asunder. Profiting from the chaos, the socalled Islamic State of Iraq and the

Levant (ISIL) a terrorist hyper-entity, has instilled a climate of hate, fear and intolerance from Tunis to the Tigris. Ironically, in the midst of the regional instability, the Islamic Republic of Iran appears an improbable oasis of calm and beckoning commerce. Once the U.S. and world powers signed the “nuclear deal” with Tehran last summer in Vienna, the Islamic Republic has shed its cocoon of sanctions and imposed isolation and regained a modicum of legitimacy despite being the same regime which gave a nefarious nod to state sponsored terrorism against Americans at the Khobar Towers, against Argentine Jews in Buenos Aires, not to mention, the killing of its own dissidents in the streets of Western capitals such as Paris and Vienna. And then there’s Tehran’s support of Syria’s Assad. This is not to say that Tehran’s authoritarian theocracy has moderated as much as that with the lifting of sanctions on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear proliferation, the mullah regime is now fully taking advantage of long pent up business opportunities for trade and investment which has eluded Iran in the past decade. After the Obama administration released over $100 billion in frozen assets, the Teheran rulers were See Metzler on 24

and Ted Cruz would speak against the anti-Constitutional “bribery” used to impose Federal policy. And while not a third rail political issue, most politicians would rather avoid bringing down upon them the wrath of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (as if there are any other kind) for little political gain. Though Bernie Sanders is hoping otherwise with his free-to-you edu-

cation and social agenda, 18-20 year olds aren’t much of a political force, and trying to rationally discuss the merits of a lowered drinking age is usually met with MADD’s shouting points. And yet New Hampshire is one of three states looking at returning the drinking age to 18 under certain conditions. Under bills in NH See gorrell on 26

Grow Up! Of all the many things said about Donald Trump, what was said by Roger Ailes, head of the Fox News Channel, said it all in just two words: by Thomas Sowell “Grow up!” Syndicated Columnist It is amazing how many people have been oblivious to this middle-aged man’s spoiled brat behavior, his childish boastfulness about things he says he is going to do, and his petulant response to every criticism with ad hominem replies. He has boasted that his followers would stick by him even if he committed murder. But is that something to boast about? Is it not an insult to his followers, if it is true? Moreover, his cockiness is misplaced, because he still does not have a majority among Republican voters, while you need a majority of all the voters to win any state in the general election. Trump has a showman’s talent for telling people what they want to hear. But you can listen in vain for a coherent argument from him, based on facts and logic, much less an understanding of the inherent limitations of the office of president. More than two centuries ago, Edmund Burke said: “Constitute government how you please, infinitely the greater part of it must depend upon the exercise of the powers which are left at large to the prudence and uprightness of ministers of state.” In other words, the personal character of the people to whom you entrust the powers of gov-

ernment matters even more than what kinds of government institutions there are. There have been some good kings and some bad presidents, as well as vice versa. In a world where the future of this country is threatened from within by increasingly angry polarization, and where external threats can become nuclear, are we really going to entrust the safety of this country to a man who still needs to grow up? Is the fact that he loudly expressed our own disgust with the political establishment a sufficient reason to gamble the whole future of the country by putting him in the White House? The White House is not a place for on-the-job training. You are supposed to be ready, or at the very least grown up, before you walk in the door. Aging happens automatically, but maturity is optional -- and it is an option that Donald Trump has not yet chosen to exercise. The issue that Trump raised about Ted Cruz’s having been born in Canada is not the first time he has tried to challenge where someone was born. “The Donald” was among those who tried to say that Barack Obama was not born an American citizen, and who disgraced themselves, while undermining other critics of Obama who had serious objections to his policies. On the other hand, messianic demagogues have often spoken at least part of the truth. But they have also often led their followers to their doom, whether at Jonestown, Stalingrad or innumerable other places. That is a very high price to pay for an exhilaration of the moment. Carolina and deployed to Balad, Iraq in November 2005 when he was 21-years-old. He served as a rear gunner on a Humvee. After just a few days in Iraq, his convoy was involved in a brutal ambush. This ambush set the tone for the rest of his 12-month deployment where every day was a life or death situation that required Ron to be constantly vigilant. Upon returning to Fort Bragg in December 2006, Ron felt super human for all he had survived and thought the world owed him a favor. He quickly spent the money he had earned during his deployment and didn’t care about his mounting bills. His mindset led to increasing financial issues and eventually he turned to opiate drugs. Ron’s downward spiral had begun. Two months after Ron returned home, he was told he was deploying again in eight months. After hearing this news Ron transferred bases, to Fort Drum in New York to avoid his second deployment. When he arrived he was assigned to a company that was already in Afghanistan and was told he was leaving in three weeks to join them. This time, Ron was stationed in Bagram at a small base with little protection, where they were bombed and mortared every day. Eight months later Ron returned home physically and emotionally exhausted. He learned that, due to restructuring in the Army, he would be deployed for a third time. After traveling to North Carolina for an award ceremony, Ron went AWOL. He was living in a hotel with no money and was stealing to support his drug habit. Eventually he was caught

and arrested and now had mounting legal issues to deal with. It was the perfect storm in a life that was quickly raging out of control. Despite the fact that in 2009 Ron was granted an honorable discharge from the Army as an E5 Sergeant, due to his years of service and accomplishments, he had reached an all-time low. He was suffering from PTSD and drug addiction and had little hope for himself. “The only way out was death, he said. “I went from a war hero to a degenerate. In 2012, Ron was living with his girlfriend. He had been searching online for fuel assistance when he came across the Easter Seals NH Veterans Count program. He learned the program provided a hand up to veterans who were struggling financially and emotionally. He decided it was time to ask for help. “I was tired of living with the demons and having nightmares and flashbacks, said Ron of this very dark time. “I had a mind I couldn’t trust and a disease that wanted me dead. Help came in the form of Easter Seals Military & Veterans Services Care Coordinator Peter Collins. The day of their first visit, Peter arrived at Ron’s house. Although he was at home, Ron told Peter he wasn’t. Peter waited outside Ron’s home for more than three hours. “Here he was trying to help me and I was waiting for him to leave, said Ron, illustrating Peter’s level of commitment. They never ended up connecting that day. A week later Ron and his girlfriend had broken up and he was homeless. The only thing he cared about See dube on 22

The Carroll Of Carroll County by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

Why would a New Hampshire County and town be named for a rich man from Maryland? In 1840 the state legislature took some of Strafford County and created a new county and named it Carroll. This at the same time that Belknap Country was formed and named after Jeremy Belknap. During the last week of March in 1776 four men were commissioned by the Continental Congress to travel to Canada in an effort to convince the Canadians to join Americans in their struggle for freedom against the British. One of those men was Charles Carroll of Maryland, the man for whom Carroll County and the town of Carroll, New Hampshire were named. The other three were Benjamin Franklin, who was then seventy years old, Samuel Chase, and John Carroll. Only Franklin and Chase were members of the Congress; Chase was a protestant and the Carroll’s were prominent members of the Roman Catholic Church with Charles as a layman, and his cousin John being a Jesuit priest. It was felt that the latter two could exert influence upon the church leaders in Canada to support America against the British. The mission failed and Franklin’s health was affected by the arduous trip to the extent that he felt he might not survive. The commissioners reached Montreal by travelling up the Hudson River, having to contend with April snow and some icy waterways. Some reports have dated this mission as taking place in 1774. Another story tells us that the

route of the foursome to Montreal took them through what is now Carroll County, NH, giving a New Hampshire connection to Charles Carroll. Still another states that a separate trip before the 1776 one was made by Carroll in 1774 at the request of Franklin and Chase with the same objective of gaining Canadian support for the American revolution. That mission also failed but may have involved a New Hampshire Route to Montreal. Charles Carroll was a descendent of a family of Irish kings named O’Carroll who moved to Maryland to escape discrimination in their native country against Roman Catholics, dropping the O from their name. He was born on Sept. 20, 1737. After being educated in France, Carroll returned to Maryland where there were laws against Roman Catholics voting and being involved in politics, and holding public of-

fice. The Carroll family, however, was wealthy and owned much property, overcame the discrimination and worked

I always tell people that lure color should be one of the last things you change when fish aren’t biting. Change size, shape, even presentation, before you change color. Since they are nearsighted, vision is close to the bottom of the list of senses that fish use when feeding. Moreover, the wavelength of certain colors and the available light plays a large part in which colors fish see best. A little understanding of the senses fish use goes a long way. The biggest factors in lure selection should be shape of your lure and the type of bait, if any, that you put on it. Fish use their lateral line system, which is made up of hair-like mechanoreceptors called neuromasts that detect changes in water pressure created by vibrations or displacement. Their lateral line

system is so sensitive that fish can even determine which direction the vibration is coming from by which direction their lateral line hairs move. Fish can key in on an object’s movements from much greater distances than their vision can detect. Fish also have a very sensitive olfactory system, which they use to detect odors in the water. Olfactory detection of food is limited by direction of currents. Only after a fish has zeroed in on its meal using its lateral line or olfactory system will it rely on its vision. So, unless there are fish directly under or around you, you don’t need to worry much about what color lure you are using. When there are fish within sight of your lure, then color becomes im-

portant. You want a color that will stand out to your target species. The old adage is to match your lure color to the light conditions. Use bright colors on bright days, neutral colors on cloudy days, and dark colors at night. Red is the first color to disappear since it has the shortest wavelength, followed by orange, yellow, green, and blue. The deeper your lure sinks, the more these colors (in that order) will disappear or turn black. As light fades, these colors will disappear or appear black to fish. Gold and silver are only good on bright days because they reflect the available light. I typically have red, orange, green, blue, white, and gold lures in every jig box. Knowing the natural

We all love traditions because of what they represent. One is consistency and another is the expectation of what the tradition brings. Birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, July 4th all are great traditions. But sometimes, just for a moment, it is fun to break tradition and try something new. That goes for beer for sure! Stepping out of your comfort zone is what great craft beer is all about. But I go further in this article today because I am presenting a great beer brewed outside of New Hampshire. You might ask, “Why? Because it’s just that good, it needs to be talked about... Long Trail Brewery is located in Bridgewater Corners, Vermont and has been brewing for folks since 1989. They have grown from their original capacity of 8,000 barrels /yr in the basement of the Old Woolen Mill to a megabarrel brewery located not far from the first site. Long Trail has five year-round beer offerings as well as six seasonals and eleven specialty or limited offerings. You can visit them on Facebook at facebook. com/longtrailbrewingco or at their website at LongTrail.com To understand how nice SMaSH #2 is, you need to know some background. Brewers tend to use a measured mixture of specialty grains for their taste and color attributes. This is then arranged with

matching hop combinations. Finally, a matching yeast is selected to make the beer what it is according to the recipe. SMaSH is actually an acronym which means Single Malt and Single Hop. Version #2 uses just Maris Otter malt and just Mosaic hops. This concept allows both of the contributions to shine on their own. There is no confusion of tastes, it’s just the malt and hops speaking very plainly to you. And they taste so nice together! Maris is nutty with biscuit notes while Mosaic is tropical fruit, citrus with whispers of pine. It’s beautiful golden yellow tones with a touch of haze and brilliant white head complete the portrait. It is best enjoyed in a glass where you can put your nose in the glass and enjoy the beauty of its hoppy nature. The floral goodness of the dry hop-

ping enhance the enjoyment. The complete package make for a truly enjoyable experience. If you are interested in IPA’s or hoppy beers, this one will garner your attention. Most folks on BeerAdvocate.com give this brew a high 3+ to 4+ as an incredible enjoyment while others on different sites rate this as one of the most interesting beers they have tasted. You can find this at Case-n-Keg in Meredith and Laconia and other fine craft beer providers. Get it before it disappears for the season! Head Off Trump By Uniting Behind Cruz A f t e r putting thoughts to the first draft my friend Rep. Greg Sorg R-Easton sent me a better by Niel Young Advocates Columnist piece than where I was going. Here is what I would have written! With So much going on “Fascism: 1: A political philosophy, movement or regime that exalts nation above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition. 2: A tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control.” Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary (1979 edition). With the exception of his most purblind supporters, candid Republicans will recognize that on the basis of his speeches and his very public and welldocumented life, this definition accurately describes Donald Trump’s likely approach to governance every bit as well as it does Barack Obama’s current one. His own words and his dismissive – even vicious - manner of dealing with those who oppose or even question him reveal Donald Trump to be authoritarian to his very core. Do Republicans really want another authoritarian President just because this one presumably will devote his dictatorial behavior to objectives and policies they favor? This is the question that supporters of low-polling Republican candidates from John Kasich to Rick Santorum must urgently consider, not later, but right now, because if The Donald

achieves substantial pluralities in both the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, it may be too late to stop him from winning the Republican nomination. So ask yourselves: Is Donald Trump really your second choice for President? Making him just that will be the practical result of your sticking with your preferred boutique candidate to the bitter end. Republican primary voters will once again have done what they do every four years: kill off all the acceptable alternatives to the Establishment Republican Candidate we wind up with, and then stay home on Election Day and hand victory to the even worse Establishment Democrat candidate. And the endless Washington cycle of self-dealing, crony capitalism and corruption goes on and on. And do not deceive yourselves: Donald Trump is transforming himself into the Establishment Candidate before your very eyes. Previously marketing himself as the Ultimate Outsider, Trump now tells us of his eagerness to “make deals” (which of course he assures us will be “great deals”) with the likes of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell. That this transformation is phony is beside the point. The mere fact that Trump is maneuvering to be perceived this way by the Republican Establishment should be enough in and of itself to raise questions among his supporters as to where his loyalties lie, with them or with his ambition for power. Let the evidence of his life-long love affair with himself supply the answer. However he may deceive the Republican Establishment, once in office Trump’s authoritarian in-

stincts would prevail and leave America no better off than it is now. It is not The Donald’s style to negotiate. It is to bully, browbeat and bribe. But bullying and browbeating, however effective in the private sector, won’t work with Congress, and bribery won’t be practicable once Trump is no longer an outsider seeking favors for his business interests. A President Trump would be ineffective except to the extent of his willingness to follow the Obama Playbook and rule by executive order and administrative rulemaking. Haven’t we had enough of this? Republican voters, as opposed to the Washington Republican Establishment, do not - or should not – want to elect a President who will make faustian deals with the Washington Ruling Class or govern by executive branch decree, because experience has shown that the results will be to make the federal government more powerful, the national debt bigger, and themselves more deeply and perpetually entrenched in office. We do not need a dealmaker. We do not need a dictator. We need a constitutionalist who will reaffirm the Rule of Law. So I repeat: Is Donald Trump your second choice? If not, then you should carefully consider abandoning the by-now hopeless and ego-driven campaign of your first choice and vote instead for the only Republican left with a chance of heading off a Trump nomination: Senator Ted Cruz. A true constitutional scholar, as Attorney General of Texas and U.S. Senator, Ted Cruz has walked the walk both of defending the Constitution and opposing the criminal enterprise of corruption and self-dealing Congress has become.

DEAR TIM: I’m about to buy a digital multimeter to troubleshoot all sorts of electrical issues around my home. I’ll be blunt. Do you own one? If so, which one? What do you like about the one you have? There seems to be a huge difference in these devices, and I’m very confused as to what to purchase. Why there is such a huge disparity in the pricing of these tools? --Randy P., Akron, Ohio DEAR RANDY: I understand your confusion when looking at these tools. If you visit an online retailer that displays different multimeters next to one another, they look pretty much alike, but the difference in price from the lowest to the highest can vary by a factor of 25 or more! It’s natural for you to wonder if there can be a correspondingly huge difference in performance from tool to tool. The answer is yes. When it comes to digital multimeters, you get what you pay for. Over the years I’ve accumulated quite a few digital multimeters. I started off with a beginner’s model from Radio Shack. It’s smaller than a deck of playing cards and has somewhat limited capabilities.

This tool, a digital electrical multimeter, allows you to do lot of troubleshooting around your home. I could go on and on about the detailed electrical specifications of multimeters, but I’ll keep it simple: Get one that’s durable, that has a pedigree and that can handle any electrical appliance at your home. The more expensive multimeters can do more. The one I’m now using is a sleek Klein Tools MM700. As you might expect, it’s robust and has a full feature set that would impress professional electricians, HVAC technicians and anyone who tinkers with electronic devices. What I really like about this one is that it’s an auto-ranging multimeter. This means it

design, build or remodel your dream home

Perhaps the most useful thing you’ll do with your new digital multimeter is to check what we call continuity -- i.e., if a wire or circuit is continuous or unbroken. Here’s a simple example of this. When I take a quarter or a piece of metal, turn on the multimeter, insert the two probes into the proper holes on the tool and touch the quarter with the probes, I hear a nice tone and I see a measurement on the screen. This tells me electricity is flowing through the quarter or metal between the two probes. If I had performed the same test but substituted a piece of wire that had a break in it, I would have not heard a thing and my meter would have displayed “OL. The audible tone in many multimeters is very handy because you can concentrate on what the probes are touching and get the information you need with your ears in some cases. I’ll describe a few things you can do around your home with an auto-ranging See builder on 16

multimeter that could save you the cost of a service call from an electrician. But first things first: When you get your multimeter, stop and read the instructions, especially the safety warnings. Let’s say you have an oldfashioned low-voltage doorbell and it’s not working. You can use the multimeter to see if you’re getting power up to the doorbell switch. If you don’t register power coming to the switch, then you can use the multimeter to check for a break in the wire from the transformer or up to the doorbell. Often people mess up the wires that connect to a 3-way switch. They go nuts trying to figure out what wire connects to what screws on the odd switch. Once again, the multimeter will save you an expensive service call. You can use it to discover the continuous hot wire that feeds the first switch. Once you know this, it’s pretty easy to get both switches wired the right way. Here’s a simple task many overlook. You can use a multimeter to check to see if light bulbs are burned out. Realize the small glob of solder at the base of a bulb is connected

to one end of the filament. The other end of the filament is connected to the aluminum threads at the base of the bulb. Turn on the multimeter, touch one probe to the solder glob and one to the threads and check for continuity. If the bulb is still good, you’ll hear a tone if you have my multimeter! The most common use you may put the multimeter to is to check for live voltage at a switch or an outlet. Follow the instructions that come with the multimeter and avoid working with live circuits. You can turn off the circuit breaker that provides power to an outlet and then check to see if it is energized. I can do this easily with my MM700, as it has removable shields so the probes can get into the slots of a standard wall outlet. If you’re unsure how to do this, consult with a pro. Let’s say you think a wall switch or dimmer switch is broken. The multimeter can tell you in a jiffy it still works. Disconnect the switch from the power source and use the continuity tester function. If the switch is in the on position and you don’t hear an audible signal or readout for continuity, then the switch

is probably defective. If you like working on your cars, a multimeter is invaluable. The alternator on my son’s car went bad, and in minutes I used my multimeter to confirm the alternator was not producing the needed power to keep the battery topped off. One thing I love about my Klein Tools MM700 is it also can test the surface temperature of something. It has a really wide range -- from zero to 1,500 F! There are countless things around your home you may want to know the temperature of, and most would fall within that range. I also love how durable my MM700 is. It can handle drops from just over 6 feet and sustain no damage. Remember, read the instruction manual that comes with your new digital multimeter! Need an answer? forage of your target species can also give you a leg up. The available light and type of prey your quarry is chasing will determine which color lure you should ultimately use, but a good starting point is to match the available light – bright colors on bright days, etc. – but before you change color, change your presentation. Sometimes the slightest difference in the way you present your jig will have far more impact than anything else. Tim Moore is a professional fishing guide in New Hampshire. What’s In A Name? by Steve White Contributing Writer

If you have ever attempted to use a wild bird field guide to identify that mysterious bird in your backyard, you might be tempted to question the name of that bird. Exactly what is a northern mockingbird? Is there a southern mockingbird? Taken literally, common names can be misleading to any novice birder. When you check your field guide, note that there are two names for each bird you’re trying to identify: one scientific, used to place birds by families, lineage and species, and the other is the common name. Interestingly, it is the latter the causes the most confusion, particularly when you read that the year-round range of the Minus Polyglottos (i.e. the northern mockingbird) extends from New England on the east, south to Florida and across the lower United States westward to Oregon and south into Mexico! Some birds with the name “common attached to their names, such as the common loon or common raven, may be abundant in some areas but totally absent elsewhere. Depending upon where you live, the word “widespread might be a more accurate name. Names of birds are often related to color or description, which can also lead to some confusion. A good example is the red-bellied woodpecker that has been spotted in the Lakes Region with regularity these last three years. You would expect the bird to have a red chest or belly. In fact, the most conspicuous red

on the female is a spot on the back of the neck. On the male, it is a red hood. The belly actually has only a very slight tinge of pink. Go figure! Many birds carry the name of the person who is credited with the bird’s discovery, such as the Bullock’s oriole. The Lewis woodpecker is named for the famous explorer Merriweather Lewis. The bird was first discovered by him in July, 1805 near Helena, Montana on his epic cross-country trip with William Clark. The next month on the same trip, Captain Clark discovered another bird in Idaho. It is now known as the Clark’s nuthatch. It is not necessary to become an ornithologist to enjoy your feathered friends, but it is fun to discover the source and understand the logic of bird names, both common and scientific. At least, it may provide some confusing entertainment along the way. Enjoy your birds. Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH.

Donald Trump won popular support by opposing establishment supported policies, e.g., allowing illegal immigration and welcoming unvetted refugees, and by criticizing establishment politicians’ deals that harm our country and the American people. Then we learned that Trump supports many things most Americans oppose, e.g., the bank bailouts, the Obama stimulus, using eminent domain to benefit special interests, and the big government politicians that threaten our liberties. Now Trump’s first deal reveals his interest is benefiting himself, even at the expense of the American people; he not only endorsed

but promised to increase the ethanol requirement! The ethanol requirement is an environmental / crony capitalist program that hurts 99 percent of the American people. It increases fuel and food prices, reduces gas mileage, harms engines, and is more harmful to the environment than gasoline! Nor does ethanol help any energy problem; politicians kept us from being energy independent decades ago. Trump now boasts th a t h e ca n wo rk with Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and other establishment politicians. The Washington political establishment is warming to Trump whose ethanol deal reveals they can make mutually beneficial deals with him. Trump isn’t the anti-establishment candidate he appeared to be; a Trump Presidency would continue government as usual. This is a big personal disappointment since, despite his abrasiveness, I defended Trump’s

statements that were in the best interests of the American people. While the Washington establishment warms to Trump and other supposedly anti-establishment candidates, they continue to oppose Ted Cruz because only Cruz exposes their double-dealing and self-interested actions. Cruz has fought the establishment to fulfill his campaign promises. Only Cruz is committed to ending the special deals for the special interests; in Iowa, the heart of the ethanol special interests, he promised to eliminate the ethanol requirement. Ted Cruz is a Constitutional Conservative, consistently on the anti-establishment, pro-citizen side of every issue. Ted Cruz is a gentleman, a person who would make Americans proud and our country respected. If you want to break the Washington establishment’s control of our government, to start shrinking big government, and to return to constitutionally limited government that works for the people, we must unify behind the only true antiestablishment conservative; vote for Ted Cruz in the Republican Presidential Primary. people’s desire to bring our country back to glory with clearly stated policies. What I’m also looking for in a candidate, is the ability to get the things he speaks about accomplished once elected. Marco Rubio knows how to work with people and has the debating skills and ability to be effective and win people over and how to build coalitions. He understands the constitutionally limited power of the presidency and the need to be able to work with congress through persuasion and compromise. Having served in office, I understood the importance, as does Rubio, of compromising on style, details and process, while never compromising your integrity or principles. We may not get everything we want or exactly what we want, but we can get a good part of what we are working for. That’s called the art of negotiating and working effectively with people to advance your goals

a step at a time. Incremental changes are what have gotten us into the mess we’re in today and what will get us back on track. No sweeping changes or two-thousand page comprehensive laws will be able to solve our problems without causing a host of new problems. Marco Rubio understands that and knows that an uncompromising, unbending, “my way or the highway attitude is not the way he will be able to work with congress to affect meaningful change. Marco Rubio is the real deal and the whole package for me; right on the issues, able to win in November, and has what it takes to be an effective leader of the greatest country in the world. I support him wholeheartedly and I invite you to consider doing the same on February 9th and again in November.

Still, we never know exactly what the product is they are making, there can be other items unrelated that happen to use the same color thread as a sports logo, so it is always a challenge to make sure there is enough on hand. Some of the thread that will be needed can be anticipated long before the Super Bowl is played. “We loaded up on the gold thread color that is being used for this year’s new Super Bowl logo, said Clark. Among the items you will see on Super Bowl Sunday where the logos were most likely made with Madeira thread are the Championship hats that seem to appear out of nowhere on the tops

of the heads of the players on the winning team. There will also be the thousands of pieces of merchandise for sale displaying the name of the winning team available to fans and collectors alike who can proudly claim they bought it at the Super Bowl. Still, it isn’t just big games like the Super Bowl that have to be anticipated. “It really is constant in the embroidered sports market since you have the NFL, NHL, MLB, said Clark. “There is always a lot of things going on. Though sports uniforms aren’t embroidered as much today almost all NFL teams will have a Madeira colored thread somewhere on their logo or uniform.

to change laws and rose to great prominence in America. Some believe that Charles Carroll became the richest man in the country having plantations and business interests in Maryland and owning other property in New York and Pennsylvania. Though Charles seems to have but little connection to Carroll County, New Hampshire, or to the State of New Hampshire, he is known to have been a big supporter of the American revolution and an advocate of personal freedom, especially of religious freedom. He and his family continued to be strong members of the Catholic Church while apparently having success in reducing religious discrimination. He became the only Catholic in the Continental Congress and one of four men from Maryland to sign The Declaration of Independence . He was named a delegate to the Congress on July 4th, 1776 and signed the Declaration on August 2nd of that year. He served in the United States Senate from 1789 to 1792 and in the Maryland State Senate from 1777 -1780. When he signed the Declaration he added the name Carrollton to make clear which Charles Carroll he was, so there would be no confusion with others bearing the same name. Carrollton was the name of his plantation in Maryland. Carroll’s act was considered an act of courage as he stood to lose the most of the signers if the British had become victorious over the revolting colonists. Being the last surviving member of the signers of the Declaration of Independence , he died at the age of 96 in 1832. New Hampshire is not the only state to name a county after Charles Carroll of Carrolton. The states of Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Virginia also have named counties after Charles

Carroll of Carrolton. He laid the cornerstone for the building of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad on July 4th, 1828. His popularity obviously is a testimony of the respect he had acquired from his associates and th e c o u n tr y a s a whole. Carroll owned hundreds of slaves; some suggest that he had as many as four or five hundred, something that he is said to have been uncomfortable with and was thus interested in a gradual process of setting slaves free. President George Washington wrote the following to Carroll of Carrollton in a letter written in Philadelphia on the 23rd of January in 1793: “ Dear Sir: The western Indians having proposed to us a conference at Auglaise, not far distant from Detroit, in the ensuing spring, I am now about to proceed to nominate three commissioners to meet

21 and treat with them on the subject of peace… it is necessary , that characters be appointed, who are known to our citizens for their talents and integrity…whose interest in common with that of their country is clearly to produce peace… Will you then permit me, Sir, to nominate you as one of the commissioners?” The name of Charles Carroll of Carrollton which is attached to a New Hampshire county and town is also found in encyclopedias, history books, the Declaration of Independence, and numerous locations in the United States of America. Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. lives in New Hampton.

House by a vote of 227 – 100. Many NH State Representatives, too many of them Republicans, handed a PR win to the abortion lobby. Some of our public servants deemed it quite acceptable for our hard-earned taxpaying dollars to flow to a scandal-ridden and possibly criminal organization. But, the bottom line is this – this “bipartisan” vote is now being used to awaken the call to AGAIN, take your money and give it to Planned Parenthood. If you want to see how your representative voted go to http://www.gencourt. state.nh.us/nhgcrollcalls/rollcallsearch.aspx and look up HJR3. was drugs and “everything else was a distant second.” When he learned that Ron had become homeless, Peter reached out and found a hotel for him to stay in. It was also where they had their first face-to-face meeting. In addition to putting a roof over Ron’s head, Peter made sure he had food. Ron began to trust Peter and the help he was receiving from Veterans Count. Just a couple of days later with Peter’s support, Ron checked himself into a drug detox program. It was the start of a new life. Since then, Peter and Ron have formed a strong bond built on trust. Peter and Ron have worked together to rebuild Ron’s life and help him to deal with his demons and drug addiction. “Working with Peter saved my life,” said Ron. “I wouldn’t have had the opportunities and successes that I have now without him. I was at the bottom and was incapable of enjoying anything that brought me happiness.” Today, Ron is employed and putting his life back on track. He is positive and grateful for all he has accomplished with Peter’s help. He willingly shares his story in the hope that it will help other struggling veterans. He says, “I’m happy living in my own skin. I’ve got my head screwed on straight and I’m proud of myself again.” Ron has been sober for just over two years and credits Easter Seals for this. “They have given me everything that I thought I couldn’t get, everything that I thought would take a lifetime to fix,” he said. “Easter Seals inspired me to step up and help myself.” To refer a service member or veteran in need, please call Chrystn Fisher at 603.315.4354. Donald Trump is not the only one who needs to act like an adult. With this country starting to unravel from within, while ruthless enemies overseas are developing both nuclear weapons and intercontinental missiles to deliver them, we face problems that cannot be solved by candidates with glib words or by voters who vote for whoever meets their emotional needs. If you don’t understand the issues, but want to do your patriotic duty, then stay home on election night, whether in the primaries or in the national election in November. Uninformed voters turn elections into a game of playing Russian roulette with the future of America. Conservative candidates will also have an opportunity to show their maturity and their patriotism. This is not the first primary season in which the conservative vote has been split among so many Republican candidates that it virtually guarantees that someone who is not a conservative will win the Republican nomination. At some point during the primary season, it becomes clear that some candidates have no real chance of winning the nomination, much less the general election. At that point they can either continue hanging on, keeping the conservative vote split, or they can withdraw and throw their support to some other conservative candidate who has a chance. A lot of people need to grow up, and to do something for this country that has done so much for them. flush with cash; enough at least to offset the dangerous dip in oil prices. Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani is touring Western Europe on a shopping spree seeking both legitimacy and the opportunity to reopen the once lucrative trade and investment which prerevolutionary Iran had with the world. On a state visit to Italy, he signed $17 billion in deals. Proceeding to Paris he inked an $25 billion order to buy 118 Airbus civil aircraft as well as restart co-production between the French Peugeot auto group and a local subsidiary to the tune of $500 million, and of course there’s petroleum deals for the giant Total energy company. The Airbus deal is aimed at modernizing the aging fleet of the once-proud Iran Air, with state of the art European planes. Manuel Valls, the French Prime Minister said, the two countries were “being reunited.” After all, “France for a long time turned itself towards Iran, fascinated by its history, attracted by its culture, seduced by this

great nation which is so incomparable.” A nice turn of phrase, but it’s Persia, not the Iran of the Islamic Republic which he longs for. Is it the Islamic Republic of Iran which holds a near world record for public executions, or the country whose hit men killed a former reformist Iranian Premier Shahpur Bakhtiar in the streets of Paris? Or the Islamic Iran of entrenched gender discrimination? Naturally, voices of moderate opinions inside Iran yearn for an opening from the sealed and sterile monochrome vision of the Islamic Republic and its aged Ayatollahs. An opening to the outside is warranted and overdue and may encourage reform. But at what price do we rehabilitate the pariah state ? So as the Arab Winter deepens in violence and confusion, the Persian Spring approaches with brimming commercial optimism but hardly much of a hint of a long overdue human rights thaw. John J. Metzler is the author of Divided Dynamism The Diplomacy of Separated Nations: Germany, Korea, China.

and Minnesota, beer and wine could be consumed by 18-20 year olds when accompanied by somebody over the age of 21 while in a commercial establishment. (Think of a father and son having a beer after work, or a family at a restaurant celebrating an 18-yearold’s college acceptance or enlistment in the military.) In California, the age would simply be lowered to 18 for all alcohol. None of these bills are likely to pass. Nor should they at this point. Returning the drinking age to 18 is supported by about 25 percent of Americans nationally. That number has been rising, but it’s nowhere near where it needs to be to justify change. It is high enough, though, to support calls for honest dialog. For too long the discussion has been dominated by much of the same discredited rhetoric employed to foist the Eighteenth Amendment on America. But the movement to open up the old debate using new data

has an unexpected ally: the Amethyst Initiative. Though it sounds like the title of a Ken Follett spy novel or a classified intelligence program leaked on Hillary Clinton’s private email server, the Amethyst Initiative is a group of 136 chancellors and presidents of universities who support “informed and unimpeded debate on the 21-year-old drinking age.” The Initiative, founded in 2008, recognizes that “the problem of irresponsible drinking by young people continues despite the minimum legal drinking age of 21, and there is a culture of dangerous binge drinking on many campuses.” It’s hard to argue with that. But of course people do. Despite centuries of evidence that a government’s outlawing of something doesn’t make it go away, some people turn to evidence of correlation to prove causation. Yes, drunk driving has been reduced since 1984, but the causes can be traced more convincingly to changing the thresh-

old of impairment from 0.10 to 0.08, increasing awareness through public information campaigns, increasing penalties for drunk driving, increasing enforcement including police check points, and the nation’s reduced per capita alcohol consumption since 1984. On the other side of the ledger, a 2015 Fact Sheet from the Centers for Disease Control reported: • 12 to 20 year-olds drink 11% of all alcohol consumed, 90% consumed in the form of binge drinks • Underage drinkers consume more drinks per drinking occasion than adults • Among high school students, during the past 30 days, 35% drank some amount of alcohol, 21% binge drank, 10% drove after drinking, and 22% rode with a driver who had been drinking Clearly our 18-20 yearold alcohol Prohibition isn’t working. It’s time to talk about alternatives.
