Bowl-AThon To Benefit Seeds Of Faith

First New Hampshire Sled Dog Club Organized Over 90 Years Ago in North Sandwich.) The first sled dog races in Laconia were in 1929 and 1930, sponsored by the New England Sled Dog Club which was in Wonalancet, New Hampshire and was formed in 1922. It became an international competition right from the start with competitors from Canada,

Germany, Finland as well as the United States. In 1938, the races ended due to the threat of World War II and it wasn’t until 1956 that sled dog racing came back to Laconia and was sponsored by the Belknap County Sportsman Club and in 1957 former members of the Laconia Sled Dog Club

formed the Lakes Region Sled Dog Club who have produced the World Championship Derby ever since. The following article originally appeared in the Winter 1952 edition of “White Mountain Echoes” and tells of the beginning of the New England Sled See sled on 19

This weekend marks the 86th running of the Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby, Friday through Sunday, February 13-15th. (The Sandwich Sled Dog Race will also take place this weekend. Hosted by the Sandwich Sidehillers Winter Trail Club, will be held on Saturday, February 14th

This weekend the 86th Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby will take place. This race, a popular New Hampshire weirs times archive photo spectator event has seen mushers from around the world.

On Sunday, February 22 there will be a charity Bowl-A-Thon at Dover Bowl to benefit Seeds of Faith, a non-profit organization based in Somersworth serving the needs of homeless and low-income people. Twenty-six teams of 4 people are needed to join in the fun. Each team is asked to raise a minimum of $400. Dozens of raffle prizes from local businesses and a Grand Prize for the team raising the most money. Games start at 1:00 pm followed by a second session at 3:00 p.m. if needed. Food and beverages available for purchase at Dover Bowl. Nursing Homes To The Editor: Last Thursday, our Senator, Jeanie Forrester filed a late bill that would prevent Governor Hassan from taking money that was supposed to go to nursing homes, to be used in the deficit that Governor Hassan created by going on a spending spree when she was elected in her first term. The state of NH raised all the money it expected to raise with taxes and fees that it expected to raise. It is just the Governor spent more than what she was supposed to spendâ&#x20AC;Ś So the state of NH does not have a problem raising money, just a problem with how the Governor spends money. Well, now it is time to pay the piper and the Governor wants the nursing homes and our citizens in the nursing homes to pay. The people in the nursing homes need care and cannot speak up for themselves. They need our help. In the 2013 budget, it was specifically noted that the money to go to nursing homes actually had to go to nursing homes, and not for anything else. So the legislature creates a budget, and the Governor signs the budget and then ignores it. Sound familiar. So the legislature creates a budget and the President ignores the budget. Mandated Enforcement of these two statutes will save this state millions and give all elected an increase in their take home compensation,. Ice Fishing And Me

Now that the ice fishing derby is finally over here in Central New Hampshire, I am no longer worried about expressing my trepidations. Many members of FATSO, my winter support group, have asked me to teach them about this sport in order to help get over their winter doldrums but it is one thing, I am sometimes ashamed to admit to the group, that I know nothing about. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not that I have anything against the sport itself, if thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what you enjoy, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just not anything that I could ever get used to. I know a few folks who really enjoy ice fishing and when they express their often unbridled enthusiasm for it and then offer to take me out for a day of it, I will kindly refuse with an excuse that is starting to seem thin. After all, how can one person have to attend so many family wedding and funerals that always seem to occur on the second weekend in February? If I was to tell them the truth, the fact that spending a frigid day outside sitting near a hole in the ice, even in one of those fairly comfortable bob houses, really has no appeal to me, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure it would only encourage them to try even harder to get me out there and I really donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need them to try so hard. So, I find it safer to just

create another imaginary relative to make it easier for them. If they only knew, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure they would thank me. If I had grown up going ice fishing then Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure I would be enjoying it today just as much as them. But I grew up on Long Island, New York where the thought of ice fishing was about as distant in our minds as the thought of eating a slice of pizza with a knife and a fork (something I have, I am ashamed to admit to old New York friends, succumbed to on occasion here after thirty yearsâ&#x20AC;Ś.the horror!!) There werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t any large lakes near where I grew up but there were a few small ones. In the winter they would freeze up and we would ice skate on them and that was about it. If anyone went ice fishing, I never saw them and if I did, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure I would have kept far away from what would have been considered very strange behavior. Obviously, Ice fishing on Long Island wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a cultural tradition handed down from father to son like it is here in New Hampshire. I can only imagine a conversation between a Long Island father and his son about going ice fishing: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Come with me, my brave son, we are going ice fishing.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;What?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I said we are going to spend this cold winter day sitting in a wooden house on a frozen lake trying to catch a fish.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;What? Others would be walking from their car to the custom built fishing hole they had built for their child to see if he (or she) was learning anything from the ice fishing consultant they had hired for the day. (Not to worry, though, even if they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite get the hang of it they are guaranteed a prize at the fishing derby.) So , as Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure you have figured out by now, ice fishing was never in my blood and it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t something I will ever attempt. Still, people will keep on insisting I try it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Câ&#x20AC;&#x2122;mon it will make a great story,â&#x20AC;? they insist with a devious grin. Still, no one will ever get me out on that ice. To wake up at 5am on a sub-zero winter morning, dress myself in layers of clothing and then drive my car onto something that is water nine months out of the year so I can sit inside a little house and wait for a stick to move will never appeal to me like it does to others. I can think of better ways to spend my days. I could be productive like spending the time cleaning the basement or painting the bathroom or raking the roof orâ&#x20AC;Ś.hmmmmâ&#x20AC;Ścome to think of it, maybe it would make for a great story after all. The GOP’s Orrin Hatch Problem Did the 2014 midterms really happen? Less than three months after a red tide rolled over the country, the Senate Republican Rollover Cauby Michelle Malkin cus is back to Syndicated Columnist its default position in Washington, D.C.: Hands up, bow down. Last week, senior GOP supplicant Sen. Orrin Hatch announced that he will support the confirmation of President Obama’s attorney general nominee, Loretta Lynch. He praised her “qualifications” and decried the Justice Department’s previous leaders who “have facilitated executive abuses by this president rather than upholding the rule of law.” Guffaw. A Utah Republican, Hatch was one of the biggest, fattest facilitators of that lawlessness from the first days of the reign of Obama. Beltway amnesia among entrenched incumbents is a chronic disorder. “I like Barack Obama and want to help him if I can,” Hatch declared in January 2009, just weeks before the Senate voted on President Obama’s attorney general nominee, career corruptocrat Eric Holder. In the interest of “comity,” Hatch and 16 other Senate Republicans backed Holder, despite his long, sordid history of questionable ethics and national security-undermining politicking in the Clinton administration -- from the Marc Rich pardon scheme with former White House counsel Jack Quinn to the clemency deal for 16 members of the violent terrorist groups Fuerzas Armadas de Liberacion Nacional (FALN) and Los Macheteros, which the FBI had linked to more than

130 bombings and six murders. With the blessing of Senate Republican enablers, Holder went on to preside over the bloody malfeasance of the Fast and Furious scandal; the Gitmo jihad evacuations and recidivist release program; installment of far-left lawyers who had represented our worst enemies; and the establishment of a “culture of hostility” toward Justice Department employees committed to election integrity, immigration enforcement and equal treatment under the law. Now, Holder’s Senate GOP handmaidens are shocked and dismayed at the cesspool Holder is leaving behind. Their solution? Replacing him with a woman who explicitly championed and defended Obama’s executive power grabs on illegal immigration, crusaded for the manufactured “right” of illegal aliens to work in the U.S., and refused to answer GOP Sen. Ted Cruz’s questions last week about whether any limits on a president’s executive discretion to choose or ignore laws (Tax law? Labor law? Environmental law?) exist at all. Beltway Republican poseurs claimed a victory for the right after the 2014 midterms. But conservatives knew the crusty barnacles who habitually use and abuse grassroots voters would immediately revert to form. Or rather: formlessness. Let’s face it: Seven-term incumbent Hatch embodies everything that’s wrong with the GOP brand. He’s a mascot for the Big Government Republican parade and masquerade of career politicians who stand for nothing and roll over for everything. In addition to supporting Holder and now Lynch, Hatch embraced tax cheat Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and the TARP bailout, See malkin on 22

Hence, we find ourselves today with no real solutions, an 18+ trillion dollar debt, and our entitlement systems being totally overextended. As of the writing of this article, there is a $56,516 personal debt and a $146,378 family federal debt to be paid. Yet, Progressives believe SPENDING is the only way to solve problems. Spending IS the problem. So what CAN we do? We need local folks like YOU to pick up the ball and get into the game. We need YOU sitting in the seats of our local government. Selectmen, budget committees, school boards, and planning boards– these are important positions. Global Freedom Recedes, Rights Under Attack UNITED NATIONS - There’s

been a disturbing decline in global freedoms over the past year with a clear erosion of poby John J. Metzler litical rights Syndicated Columnist for the ninth consecutive year. These are among the dire findings of the Freedom House report which rates rights and freedoms in 195 countries around the world. The report underscores that, after the higher water-mark of liberties a decade ago, world events have taken a turn for the worse with a corresponding crackdown on rights and freedoms. In its annual overview, “Freedom in the World 2015: Discarding Democracy; Return to the Iron Fist,” Freedom House, the respected human rights monitor, paints a complex picture of the status and sustainability of civil, political and human rights. During 2014, for example, nearly double the number of countries, 61, saw declines in freedoms while 33 experienced advances. Freedom House uses a complex methodology in which states are rated for political rights and civil liberties with 1 being the most free and 7 the least free. Viewing 195 countries, the survey says that 89 countries are Free representing 45 percent

of the world; 55 states are Partly Free representing 28 percent, while 51 countries are Not Free comprising 26 percent. The USA, Canada along with Western Europe are Free, Mexico, Indonesia and Kenya fall into the Partly Free category, while China, Iran and Russia fit into the Not Free designation. Ratings for the Middle East and North African region remain the worst in the world, sadly with obvious reasons. Algeria, Libya and Iraq are clearly in the Not Free category while Israel presents the other side of the spectrum as Free. Importantly Tunisia has earned a place in the Free category as well, a rare example of positive political developments in North Africa. Turkey presents a troubling case as we see the country’s rating slipping lower into the Party Free group as the creeping Islamic-lite authoritarianism of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government becomes more powerful. In the same region, political rights have suffered in both Bosnia and Macedonia, both countries of former Yugoslavia, rated as Partly Free. Yet, nearby Croatia and Slovenia proudly belong to the Free category. Both East and Southeast Asia present a mixed bag in terms of rights and freedoms. While Mainland China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Burma/ Myanmar fit firmly into the Not

Free category so too now does Thailand. Both Singapore and Malaysia fall into Partly free category. Japan, South Korea and the Republic of China on Taiwan are proudly part of the Free countries. Africa covers a wide swath of the spectrum. Here we see the depths of political repression in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Zim-

babwe. Partly Free states include Mali, Nigeria and Zambia. Free countries are few, with Botswana being joined by Namibia, Ghana and South Africa. Yet, viewing the practical effects of dictatorship, we see that Zimbabwe’s longtime dictator Robert Mugabe has burnished his credentials by just being See Metzler on 30

Stormy Weather and Politics It was refreshing to see meteorologists apologize for their dire -- and wrong -- predictions of an unprecedented snow storm that by Thomas Sowell they had said Syndicated Columnist would devastate the northeast. It was a big storm, but the northeast has seen lots of big snow storms before and will probably see lots of big snow storms again. That’s called winter. Unfortunately, we are not likely to hear any similar apologies from those who have been promoting “global warming” hysteria for years, in defiance of data that fail to fit their climate models. What is at issue is not whether there is “climate change” -- which nobody has ever denied -- but whether the specific predictions of the “global warming” crowd as to the direction and magnitude of worldwide temperature changes are holding up over the years. The ultimate test of any theoretical model is not how loudly it is proclaimed but how well it fits the facts. Climate models that have an unimpressive record of fitting the facts of the past or the present are hardly a reason for us to rely on them for the future. Putting together a successful model -- of anything -- is a lot more complicated than identifying which factors affect which outcomes. When many factors are involved, which is common, the challenge is to determine precisely how those factors in-

teract with each other. That is a lot easier said than done when it comes to climate. Everyone can agree, for example, that the heat of the sunlight is greater in the tropics than in the temperate zones or near the poles. But, the highest temperatures ever recorded in Asia, Africa, North America or South America were all recorded outside -- repeat, OUTSIDE -the tropics. No part of Europe is in the tropics, but record temperatures in European cities like Athens and Seville have been higher than the highest temperatures ever recorded in cities virtually right on the equator, such as Singapore in Asia or Nairobi in Africa. None of this disproves the scientific fact that sunlight is hotter in the tropics. But it does indicate that there are other factors which go into temperatures on earth. It is not only the heat of the sunlight, but its duration, that determines how much heat builds up. The sun shines on the equator about 12 hours a day all year long. But, in the temperate zones, the sun shines more hours during the summer -- almost 15 hours a day at the latitude of Seville or Athens. It is also not just a question of how much sunlight there is falling on the planet but also a question of how much of that sunlight is blocked by clouds and reflected back out into space. At any given time, about half the earth is shielded by clouds, but cloudiness varies greatly from place to place and from time to time. See Sowell on 26

This festival was held each February 14. There are Valentine cards in museums worldwide that date back to 1415. February has been the month to celebrate love ever since the Middle Ages. Even though the history of Valentines Day is unclear, it has become one of the most popular holidays among lovers and florists! The common symbols of Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day in this era are cupids, hearts, roses, teddy bears, and words of adoration. 2015 Forecast

In looking ahead into 2015, one has to be optimistic. After all, the winter has not been that bad, so far and fuel prices are down. Gas prices are getting back to a reasonable level and hopefully, we will ALL have a few more dollars in our pockets this year. We’ll see what happens. I’m optimistic with regards to what the fishing season will bring. Since a good portion of the cold water fishing never developed this past fall, I am anticipating that spring fishing shall be quite rewarding. I’d like to believe that there shall be some very nice salmon for the taking. Time will tell. In the interim, now that the holidays are over, I’ve been turning my attention to my first love…… charter fishing! During the last three months, I had to replace my desktop computer & update a lot of my files. Consequently, I spent some time updating my spring flyers, which are now all printed out and in envelopes ready to go. I also printed out my photos from last season and included them in the mailings to last years clients. There are always some memorable photos among them and I know they appreciate them, especially if they forgot to bring a camera along on the charter. In the middle of last season I had to replace my Lowrance unit and

The new models have a lot of updated programs in them and even though the basics are the same, one still has to sit down, with the unit on and go through the manual, page by page! I am anticipating that after the winter lay over, the learning curve will be small and I will be back up to speed in short order. Again, time will tell. By the middle of February, I’ll be sitting down at the fly bench again and bringing my inventory up to snuff. I really don’t have anything “New” in mind for this year, but we’ll see what happens after I get down into it. I tied up a new one last season and named it “Goldfinger” and it was a winner! When I tie up a new pattern, I usually only tie up 3 or 4 until after I give it a good run on the lake. If it proves it’s worth, I go back & tie up enough to finish out the season. I shared this with a couple of my friends and we ALL had great luck with it. For sure, it didn’t end up being my number one choice out there, but

it came in a close second and since the fall season was very limited, I won’t need to tie up a whole lot to bring the inventory into line. Since I promote “Catch & Release”, I use ALL barbless hooks on my flies. Last year I had

Peter Ferber Winter Art Show At Art Place In Wolfeboro On Saturday, February 14, The Art Place in downtown Wolfeboro will hold its semi-annual Peter Ferber Gallery Show featuring local well-known artist Peter Ferber’s collection of new original paintings. The unveiling and artist’s reception will commence at 9:30 a.m. and all are welcome to attend and meet the artist.. In describing the subject matter and feelings that Peter Ferber has for the new collection of original artwork for his upcoming show, Peter states, “The pieces in this show illustrate the effect of color. Many of the paintings present the richness of deep saturated color schemes. Sunsets, cottage interiors, and moonlit subjects are built up with layers that give depth to the shadows and intensity to an evening sky. By contrast, white predominates in other images, which is effective when it sets off small areas

of color, complimenting each other. This is obvious in winter subjects where there is lots of snow, but it also comes as a result of an artistic choice to leave much of the paper unpainted. Here, not only the color, but the shape of the areas I’ve chosen to show in color has a big impact on the composition. A series of three studies I made of a beautiful, wineglass-stern rowing skiff use this approach, where I drew it in

pencil, then selected certain parts of the boat to emphasize with color–a portion of the mahogany transom, the blade of an oar, or a touch of the surrounding blue-green water that sets off the white hull. The use of white is probably most striking in a cut paper piece. This is a technique I explored a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed both the process and the end result of these relief “sculptures” of glued white paper that when lit cast shadows that give them incredible dimension. The first one was of a Victorian boathouse. This time I took on a whole (small) island, with a cottage, boat shed, dock, rowboat and rocky shoreline. I then used a little watercolor to depict the interiors through the cut out doors and windows, and sparingly in a landscape back drop. that need to be considered in portraying a subject. In two cases in this show, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done the exact same subject in different ways. Most strikingly in a simple scene of a dock with a single adirondack chair. One version is entirely whiteâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;all made of cut paper. The second is a moonlit version in acrylic, where deep blues predominate. Another pair is part of my â&#x20AC;&#x153;white on whiteâ&#x20AC;? seriesâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;white clapboard buildings in the snow. After completing the first painting, I could see a way of conveying it with even less paint. I was so intrigued with the image in my mind, that I had to put it down on paper And I think side by side it provides the observer with some insight into a painterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thinking. As before, all the paintings draw from the wonderful New Hampshire landscape, with most related to the lakes. There are a few more boats featured in this collection, including one of racing runabouts. And the old Mt Washington makes an appearance. There are also more smaller pieces, which those with limited wall space might enjoy! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always interesting for me to see what ends up appearing as I work on these shows. Despite the

planning, there are always many pleasant surprisesâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; this time especially. I hope the visitors that come by will find the same.â&#x20AC;? Barbara Gibbs, owner of The Art Place comments on Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s upcoming show. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peter and I usually go over his ideas for paintings about three months before he begins to paint for the show. We agree that it is better for Peter to paint what he feels, not to dictate or make limitations on him. Peter works best this way, as he is able to create, imagine, and be inspired. That is exactly what I get from this show and the paintings I have seen â&#x20AC;&#x201C; inspiration. Peter is inspired by the beauty around him, whether it be a tipped over row boat, a shed, or an evening moonlit scene of a boat gliding gracefully into its boathouseâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;these paintings all germinate from a seed of an idea, an inspiration, then paint put to paper masterfully, thus creating a beautiful work of art. Even though Peter usually shows me 16 to 20 ideas that he has for paintings, there are always some paintings that are totally spontaneousâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;ones that inspire and entice him. Simple, Free Nesting Ideas by Steve White Contributing Writer

Your backyard birds have two things in mind this spring season. The first is establishing nesting territories. The second is choosing a mate. I will leave the mate choosing to the birds, let them have their fun. The nesting territories, however, are an area where humans can lend a hand. A successful nesting season is critical for each wild bird species to achieve. The lifespan of an average songbird in your backyard is 4-6 years. The mortality rate for newborns is about 60%. You can help your birds survive each egg-laying season by performing some simple steps. Keep pets in human control during the spring seasons. This can be accomplished using dog-runners, leashes or outdoor pens. Cats should remain indoors during this crucial time, as well. Use the broken tree limbs and branches from the winter season to create an impenetrable shelter for ground-nesting birds, such as cardinals. A brush pile on one corner of your property that measures 6 feet in diameter and 5 feet high provides an excellent advantage in keeping predators away from protected wild bird nests. Adult birds love to have their babies hatch into a soft, comfortable nest. The adults will continue to shelter hatchlings with their warm bodies well into the fledgling stage. They could also use a soft cushion to sit on. Nests made of branches and twigs can

get a little uncomfortable over time. Just imagine how it would feel on your backside? You can help, however. At the start of each winter season, we tell our audience of civic groups and school classrooms to save every strand of hair you can find. Human hair, dog hair, even horse hair. Go to you local barber or hairdresser and bring along a large bag. Ask if you can sweep the floors for all the hair you can find! You might be surprised at the response. They have probably heard it before. If not, inform them of your intentions and they might just start saving the clippings for future use. After you have gathered and saved the hair, stuff all you can inside a suet basket or mesh-style bag. Onion bags work very well. Hang these new hair holders outside, preferably near the tree line in your backyard or patio and watch the action. Not all birds eat birdseed. However, all birds build nests and you may be pleasantly surprised at a new wild bird species that you witness availing itself of this wonderful, soft bounty. This is an excellent project for children, home-schoolers, and scouts of all ages. Next fall you can start the season off right by saving your familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clip-

pings after hair cuts. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t throw away your pet hair when they start shedding, save it for a rainy day next spring for the birds. Enjoy your birds! Dog Club. We thought you would enjoy it. We would also suggest that you make an effort to watch the sled dog races if you are looking for some great entertainment for the weekend. It is a real part of New England living and shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be missed. Everybody Stops To Watch Friendly Sled Dogs by Eve B. Seeley -1952 When a dog team appears on our North Country roads, everybody stops to watch. At winter carnivals in towns and cities of the White Mountain area, sled dog races and exhibitions are among the most popular features, and sometimes the picturesque canines steal the show. Spectators watching the teams line up at the starting point are usually surprised to see the wagging tails and friendly faces of the dogs instead of growls and fights. Drivers and dogs alike enjoy racing.

The majority of drivers, however, protested against cruel treatment of the animals. The organization of the New England Sled Dog Club made pos-

sible the passage of rules to bar from competition in their races any driver who treated dogs in an inhumane fashion. In 1922, inspired by Kate Sleeper Walden, (who with her husband, Arthur Walden of Yukon and Antarctic fame, owned Wonalancet Farm at Wonalancet, N. H.) the

club was organized. A group of men and women, guests of the Waldens that Winter, chartered the club and gave very careful consideration to rules for racing and every angle pertaining to the welfare of the dogs. This dog club has every reason to be proud of its record down through the years;

it still takes healthful entertainment and recreation to all parts of New England where and when snow conditions permit. And it insists on good sportsmanship among the participants of all of its races. On one occasion it was instrumental in stopping an international race because of harsh treatment of their dogs by entrants from distant points. The Brown Company of Berlin, N. H., arranged the first international race, due to interest aroused by the Waldens. Two Canadian and two American teams participated, and the win was conceded to Arthur Walden who drove a team of sons and daughters of his lead dog, Chinook. Paramount and Pathe newsreel men were present to cover the event as well as Associated Press reporters and those from Boston and other city newspapers. part of the NH Sled Dog Races dating back to 1990. Our radios and the mobility of our members allow us to be stationed at any point on the course,â&#x20AC;? said Tim Carter, CNHARC president. Perhaps the most important task the radio operators perform is to assist in stoppping car and truck traffic on all the major

roads where the dog teams cross at full speed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Radio communication is critical at certain spots along the courses because the dog teams are moving so fast that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not enough time to safely stop traffic when the dogs come shooting around a blind corner,â&#x20AC;? said Cliff Dickinson, CNHARCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team leader for the sled dog races.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The radio operators provide safety communications for the event organizers, and become force multipliers for the local police, EMS and the Community Emergency Response Team across all three days of the event,â&#x20AC;? stated Carter. Public service events like this allow the radio operators to hone their skills in challenging outdoor conditions so when all else fails, such as a major storm, terrorist attack or natural disaster, the radio operators can help the community get back on their feet as fast as possible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many of our members love doing the dog races. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve lost track of how many Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked. We turn it into an outdoor party as sometimes weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re referred to as a food club that dabbles in radio,â&#x20AC;? said Lee Hillsgrove, Sr., CNHARCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vicepresident. er that is perfect for skiers and snowboarders! The weather trend continued and we found ourselves on a windy mountaintop inside a snow cloud. After a taking few more perfect ski runs down Wildcatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s super soft powder snow covered trails, the bride and groom had a brief discussion. They decided that the ceremony site would be moved just off the summit to get out of the wind and blowing snow and down to the intersection of Upper Wildcat and Catapult! Kathyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s veil, thankfully, was well anchored to her helmet and survived the ride up the zippy Wildcat Express Quad to the summit. Everyone was bundled up from head to toe and it was a good thing. I looked up the weather at this time at the Observatory

Thom Perkins and Kathy Bennett tied the knot on Wildcat Mountain on February 4, 2015! The Bride wore a white helmet with an attached veil and skis! The happy couple left the next day for a ski trip honeymoon in Quebec. on Mount Washington and from their summit they reported wind gust nearing 60 mph and a temperature of 3 degrees. We were more than 2,000 feet lower so it was slightly warmer, less windy and happily not a complete whiteout! With cold hands and warm hearts, vows and rings were exchanged. The ceremony was complete after the couple skied through a tunnel we formed for them with our raised ski poles. They had taken

the leap and we chased them all the way down the Catapult Trail to the base lodge. Instead of skiing off the back side down to Jackson we made our way up to the Wildcat Pub to enjoy a hot chocolate mixed with our favorite concoction (just a little Peppermint Schnapps for me please). Toasts and smiles were further exchanged and it was a perfect wedding for a pair of skiers! See patenaude on 25

But wait there’s more wedding fun! For the nonskiing & snowboarding friends we did it all over again in front of the fireplace at the Snowflake Inn followed by a dinner at the Shannon Door in Jackson. Before moving down to Jackson, Charlie and I decided to pass the time by skinning up the Polecat Trail and then stomping our way up to the actual summit of Wildcat D (#37 on the White Mountain 4,000-footer list). Wildcat’s Polecat Trail is a popular route for winter hikers/ snowshoes/skiers to make their way up to the Wildcat Ridge. The Polecat Trail length is 2.75 miles and is the longest summit to base novice trail in New Hampshire. When we had arrived that morning we met two men gearing up and planning to snowshoe the entire ridge. The mountain requires the purchase of an uphill pass ($10) if you haven’t purchased a lift ticket. We easily kept warm as we made strides up the mountain while the wind and snow whipped our faces. We were even taunted by the wedding party as they schussed past us. A few curious skiers stopped to ask us what we were doing. “Going up and coming back down” answered Charlie before he further explained how the climbing skins on his skis kept him from slipping. We clicked off our skis behind the Ski Patrol hut and floundered through

the deep powder drifts of snow as we made our way up the short steep section of the Wildcat Ridge Trail to reach the high point and the observation tower. We were still in a snow cloud and we were not able to see Wildcat’s award winning scenic vista of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range (on Wildcat’s trail map there is a view guide of the mountains). There was barely a trace of the windblown snowshoe tracks that the men had made a few hours earlier. On the windswept tower platform we put on all the extra clothes we carried in our packs to try to keep warm for the trip back. The trip down the trail to where we left our skis was easy sliding fun. We clicked back into our skis and pushed off. I didn’t go anywhere. We’d both forgotten to take off our climbing skins! Now that was funny. Valentine’s Day Fun Saturday is Valentine’s Day and there is fun to be found on the trails! For single skiers and snowboarders go to Black Mountain in Jackson (celebrating its 80th year) where they will be hosting their 8 th annual Chairlift Speed Dating Event. Ride the “lift of love” a double chairlift ride with another single and perhaps you’ll meet the person of your dreams. If not head back to the lift line and give it another go! Wildcat will be celebrating Valentine’s Day with a torchlight parade. Bretton Woods Nordic Center is offering a self-

guided ski or snowshoe tour for sweethearts to visit trailside fires to roast marshmallows and make s’mores. They’ll be fireworks at Cranmore and at Waterville Valley too! Have Fun. How surprised should we be that cities around the Mediterranean -- Alexandria, Seville, and Tripoli -- have had temperatures of 110 degrees or more, while many

of a backhoe. The truck driver can shoot tons of this pea gravel into your foundation in minutes, saving you hours of backbreaking labor shoveling and hauling. As for other options, I’d simply ask the local gravel companies what other products they may have that are truly selfcompacting. Beware of any products containing sand, as the sand requires compaction. It adds lots of friction to the material. You can test this with ease when you shovel sand or dump it. With little effort it will compact. So just filling your giant foundation hole with sand is not an answer, as it will compact at some point on its own or with considerable effort on your part. Here are a few other things I would do to ensure you end up with a fantastic job. For starters, I’d be sure to pre-treat the soil inside this foundation for termites. Remember, there are two kinds of houses: those that have been attacked by termites and those that will be. I’d also be sure to dampproof the foundation wall on your home where this addition is connected. You don’t want any water vapor that’s going to rise from the soil in this new garage addition to make its way into your home. I’d put a great crosslaminated vapor barrier on top of the gravel before you pour the slab in the garage. This will keep water vapor from rusting tools and causing havoc in the garage in the winter

months. Because it’s going to have cars and perhaps a pickup truck on it, I’d make sure the concrete slab had No. 4 steel bars, commonly called half-inch rebar, installed at 2-foot centers in both directions. It would resemble a giant piece of graph paper. This steel should end up in the middle of the concrete. This steel will keep shrinkage cracks very small. It will ensure the slab will not separate, with one part being higher or lower than another part. Steel is concrete’s best friend, as it add enormous tensile strength to concrete slabs. If your building code permits it, be sure to include floor drains in your garage. Old homes had these and the slab sloped toward the center of the garage. Newer building codes tend to favor slabs sloping toward the garage door. All the code officials that voted for this obviously have never parked a car or truck that’s been on snowy roads inside their garage. They’d discover the next day their garage door rubber seal is frozen to the slab!

Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes At The Rochester Opera House Get ready for a good-time Jersey Shore rock and roll show, when Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes take the stage at the Rochester Opera House on Saturday, March 7 at 8PM (doors 7:00). Southside’s contemporaries, friend Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi, all grew from the Jersey Shore music scene. Ardent Southside fan, Bon Jovi pronounces, I’ve always wanted to be a Juke…and I still do!” They have been recording albums since 1976 and are closely associated with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. They have recorded and/or performed several Springsteen songs, including “The Fever” and “Fade Away”. Springsteen has also performed with the band on numerous occasions and in 1991 guested on their Better Days album. During the band’s formative years Miami Steve Van Zandt acted as the band’s co-leader, guitarist, songwriter, arranger and producer while other E Streeters including Clarence Clemons, Max Weinberg, Garry Tallent, Ernest Carter, Patti

Scialfa and Soozie Tyrell have all performed, toured and/or recorded with the Jukes. Southside’s first three albums I Don’t Want To Go Home, This Time It’s For Real and Hearts of Stone were produced by band co-founder Steven Van Zandt (E Street Band, The Sopranos) and feature songs written by Van Zandt and Springsteen.
