Opera At The Dover Library

Steve White, owner of Wild Bird Depot in Gilford, stands in front of the wall of success, photographs taken by his customers. Over two hundred of them, each one showing a species of bird or wildlife they have welcomed into their brendan smith Photo backyards through the use of Steve’s knowledge in attracting these welcome visitors.

Sharing His Backyard Birding Knowledge And Expertise For 20 Years by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

It has been twenty years since Steve White opened Wild Bird Depot in Gilford. Over that course of time, the emergence of the World Wide Web and big box stores has changed the way

people shop. Yet, Wild Bird Depot has not only survived the changes of time but has thrived as White continues to offer the key ingredient in helping people pursue their hobby of backyard birding –knowledge and expertise. “My customers under-

stand that you just don’t throw bird seed on the ground and expect the birds you want to see show up,” said White. “They understand that birds don’t depend on you ever. They know that if you want birds to come to your property you have to understand them.”

And understand them and teach that understanding to others is something that White does as well, or maybe better, than anyone as a wall filled with over two hundred photos in Wild Bird Depot attests to. Sent in by customSee bird on 22

THERE “IS” AN ARIZONA! Contrary to Jamie O’Neal’s poignant sentiments from the hit country song, there is indeed an Arizona. I just visited it. I arrived in Phoenix too late to enjoy the immediate glow of the Patriots 28-24 Super Bowl victory over the Seahawks, but the energy generated from the Pats’ epic triumph had not yet dissipated. Patriot apparel was still to be seen. My Phoenix visit was prompted by an invitation to visit Arizona State University to speak to some classes and do a book signing for (plug, plug) my book FAHIM SPEAKS: A Warrior-Actor’s Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back. My co-author, Fahim Fazli, is a Hollywood actor who returned as an interpreter to his native Afghanistan, where I met him in 2010 when I was on special assignment there with the Marine Corps. Our book subsequently received some nice reviews, and an ASU professor actually made it required reading for a history course. Hence,

Support Our Kurdish Allies To The Editor: The U.S. has to start directly supplying significant military equipment to the Kurds so they can effectively combat ISIS. The Kurdish Peshmerga troops are excellent fighters and our allies in the Middle East, and we need to strengthen them so they can defeat ISIS and take back territory in Iraq and Syria. The Junior Varsity (JV) Obama Administration is currently sending our military equipment to the Iraqi government for further distribution to the Kurds, but the Iraqi government is concerned with the Kurd’s desire to further their establishment of an autonomous country. Therefore, only a small portion of our equipment gets to the Kurds. Our long term success in the area lies with the Kurdish ground forces. Obama and his JV White House staff have to stop pandering to the Iraqi government and start doing what is best for the U.S. Donald A. Moskowitz Londonderry, NH

War Against Isis To The Editor: Last week a Jordanian pilot was brutally murdered by setting him on fire. Isis burned him alive. I did not see the video and I am sure most of the readers did not. I do not

want to see it. Shepherd Smith of Fox News went into a lengthy description of the video. It was a production as well as he had ever seen and what they did to this young man was murder and torture. Apparently Isis does not have to follow the Geneva Convention. So why do we with their prisoners.? Our President at the yearly prayer breakfast spoke how in the name of Christ terrible things were done in the Crusades and Inquisition. Well, Mr. President, that was hundreds of years ago. How about talking about the present? Yes if we study history we hope we will not repeat it. You cannot compare what happened hundreds of years ago with what happened this week and now. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in a study found that ISIS is “systematically killing off children belonging to religious groups and ethnic minorities. There have been mass executions of boys, beheadings and crucifixions of children and some children buried alive. They are making sex slaves out of children. The burning of the soldier in a cage had the opposite effect of what Isis wanted. The world screamed out in horror. Isis executed Imams for criticizing the burning of the Jordanian soldier. Isis is being condemned by Muslim leaders. Isis is a terrorist group and should be treated as such and

with the same brutality as they treat others. And we condemn water boarding. Now Isis is telling us that the American woman they held was killed as a result of Jordanian bombing. There is no proof that it happened or not. However if they did not capture an innocent women, she would be still alive. It is their fault regardless if she is dead. For all we know Isis could have executed her long ago and filmed that too. Isis is a group of animals and should be treated as such. We would condemn anyone who did to an animal what they have done to human beings. Mr. President‌. No more pretty words. Isis is a terrorist group and we need to be prepared. We must secure our borders‌ all our borders, north and south as well as those with ocean borders. Isis cannot be allowed into our country. I am not saying we should send our soldiers to fight on the ground. There are plenty of countries in the Mid East that can and should to that. It is their war with Isis too. But we must support those who are our allies in fighting Isis and kill every last one of them as there will be no end as long as one of them is alive. We must do this now, for the longer we wait the harder it will be. Linda Riley Meredith, NH.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Testing Times

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

There is currently a bill in the New Hampshire Senate that would require all high school students to pass the United States Citizenship Civics test in order to graduate. Of course, this has caused a big debate among many on different sides of the issue. Personally, I don’t think it is really a big deal. Have you seen an example of the citizenship test? If you have been alive, lived in this country for most of your life and have been paying attention, you could probably pass it without even studying. Still, I guess that is what the problem is all about. Fewer and fewer people are paying attention to the things that actually matter. So what might seem like a simple test to many of us would be extremely difficult to those who would be more comfortable answering questions about Jay-Z and Beyonce, whoever they are, than our own constitution. I guess that was the impetus for this bill, to try and get kids to learn more about their country. The only problem I see is that anyone who has already graduated from high school is off the hook. Maybe we could make it that you needed to pass the test in order to vote. But then again, you would never be able to prove that the person voting is really the person who passed the test since they don’t have to prove

they are the person who passed the test in the first place when they go to vote. The whole idea of seeing how much our own citizens know about their own country set me to thinking that maybe people should be tested to see if they understand more than just the history of their country. For example, if you are living in New Hampshire it is one thing to know how many amendments there are in the constitution and another to know how to correctly spell Kancamagus. I am recommending, maybe in a future bill by a legislator, a citizenship test for New Hampshire residents. It would be given to those who moved here from somewhere else and have lived here for at least five years; enough time to assimilate and understand exactly how things work. There could be sections on history, language, local government and alike and you must get a passing grade in order to be able to claim that you are a citizen of New Hampshire. For example, one question might be: “If I tell a native that I did something and they answer by saying ‘So Don’t I that means: A) They do. B) They don’t. C) They might. D) I don’t care (which means I really don’t, not that I do.) The town of Boscawen is pronounced: A) Boscawhen. B) Boscawine C) Bosco and Wine. D.) That town down near Concord. New Hampshire Town and City issues get discussed and solved: A) At Town Meetings and City Council Meetings

B.) At The Convenience Store C). In The daily newspaper by the same eight people who write nasty letters to the editor day in and day out. The proper and safest way to clean snow off your roof after a storm is A) To climb on the roof and shovel it off. B) Standing on the ground using a roof rake. C) WHAT?!!? I HAVE TO DO WHAT?!!? Obviously this test would be geared towards Flatlanders since natives wouldn’t have to take one since they have always lived here. But, if the senate bill becomes law and even citizens have to take the citizenship test then this test may have to have a different test for natives, just to be fair. We should also be giving people tests to see how much common sense they have for day to day living and to see if they are aware that there are rules for basic human decency. Sort of like the written driving exam so you can understand things like what a yield sign means. So maybe along with knowing things like the different branches of government they might also learn to clean the snow off their car after a snowstorm, not to bring thirty items to the 14 items or less checkout, to take up only one space in a crowded parking lot, to hold the door open for the person behind you and, most important, to realize that the rest of mankind isn’t here to make sure that they have a happy life. I hope you enjoyed this week’s column. There will be a quiz later. Brendan’s new book “The Best Of A FOOL in New Hampshire will be published in early spring.

Attention Pelosi: Gov’t Dependency Kills Jobs Being a San Francisco liberal means never having to say you’re sorry. Or wrong. Take Nancy Pelosi, please. Five years by Michelle Malkin ago, CaliforSyndicated Columnist nia’s genius Bay Area Democrat declared that government unemployment checks generate job growth. Yes, really. “Let me say about unemployment insurance,” she told reporters, “this is one of the biggest stimuluses (sic) to our economy. Economists will tell you, this money is spent quickly. It injects demand into the economy and is job creating.” She babbled on: “It creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative you can name, because, again, it is money that is needed for families to survive, and it is spent. So it has a double benefit. It helps those who’ve lost their jobs, but it also is a job creator.” What Crazy-Cakes Pelosi failed to mention, however, is the longestablished conclusion of labor economists from all parts of the political spectrum that extending unemployment insurance benefits prolongs unemployment. While she heralded the short-term effects on consumer spending, she ignored the blindingly obvious: Outside the land of progressive make-believe, workers respond to incentives. Over the long term, subsidizing joblessness creates more of it. I bring this all up because a new paper from the venerable, nonpartisan National Bureau of Economic Research concludes that the recent job gains Pelosi and the Democrats are now crowing about may be due to the very policy they

fought so hard against: ending extended unemployment benefits. “We find that a 1 percent drop in benefit duration leads to a statistically significant increase of employment by 0.0161 log points,” the NBER economists reported. In practical terms, it means that “1.8 million additional jobs were created in 2014 due to the benefit cut.” Take note: “Almost 1 million of these jobs were filled by workers from out of the labor force who would not have participated in the labor market had benefit extensions been reauthorized.” The jobs bump coincided with the expiration of the 99-week UI benefits extension passed as part of the Obama stimulus package. Remember: Laid-off workers were already collecting up to 79 weeks of unemployment in half of the states before the last extension. Democrats were pushing for yet another 13-week extension that would have cost tens of billions of dollars more. The cost of the joint federal-state program is borne by employers who pay state and federal taxes on a portion of wages paid to each employee in a calendar year. Remarkably, the NBER analysis attributed “61 percent of the aggregate employment growth in 2014” to the congressional cutoff in unemployment benefits at the end of 2013. Here’s the NBER team’s bottom line for Pelosi and her fellow unemployment benefits cheerleaders: “The findings in this paper imply that the negative effects of unemployment benefit extensions on employment far outweigh the potential stimulative effects often ascribed to this policy.” This vindication comes after a hyperbolic campaign by Democrats accusing Republicans of “meanness” and “obstruction” for opposing “temporary” unemployment

Frustration And High Horses The National Prayer Breakfast is a yearly event held in Washington, D.C., on the first Thursday of February each year. On Feb. 5, by Jane Cormier at the National Hooksett, NH. Prayer Breakfast, our President spoke on the current rampage being perpetuated by ISIS. This “organization” as Obama likes to call it, is the group responsible for the recent burning of a Jordanian pilot in Syria. The world is currently being besieged by radical Islam. Radical Islam (NOT an “organization”) holds nothing but hatred for the Western way of life, with a special hatred for Jews and Christians. So, while Jordan’s King Abdullah (who cancelled plans to attend the breakfast because he was dealing with RADICAL ISLAM), was fighting TERRORISM, our President was continuing his role as apologist for these ani-

mals. He does this a lot lately – and one portion of his speech was totally beyond the pale. “Unless we get on our high horse and think that this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ. So, it is not unique to one group or religion. There is a tendency in us, a simple tendency that can pervert and distort our faith.” Wow. Where does one start? We are going to go back to the 15th century now? Islamic radicals are killing people TODAY. When has this president ever spoken about Islamic radicals who kill in the name of Allah or Muhammed? How does slavery and Jim Crow become the moral equivalency of these monsters who are decapitating, burning, and murdering people at will all See cormier on 26

What is Your Heroic Narrative? Most of us don’t have a “heroic narrative.” Most of us don’t feel the need to have one, though certainly some of us would rise by Ken Gorrell to the occasion Northfield, NH. and earn one if called upon. I don’t have a heroic narrative, and unlike (former) NBC News anchorman Brian Williams, I’ve never felt the urge to create one out of whole cloth. As the latest journalism fiction played out these past few weeks, we’ve been exposed to the spectacle of a star in an industry built ostensibly on trust fall due to that most pernicious of sins: Pride. Of course, stupidity had a lot to do with it, too. How anyone in the news business

could believe that the trail markers he’d been leaving in his path to prominence wouldn’t eventually be followed back to their beginnings is beyond comprehension. It is the type of character flaw that inspired Greek tragedies. And the fall-out has been just as entertaining. Throughout history people have needed heroes. Their tales fill our literature. It’s in our nature to elevate and venerate those few who seem like us on some level but who act in ways we believe are beyond our capabilities. Many books have been written on the nature of heroism, and I’m hardly qualified to add to the genre. I did, however, edit the memoir of a journalism hero. During my research I realized just how far off track journalism has gone. Soldier of the Press, Covering the Front in Europe and North Africa, 1936 – 1943, by Henry Tilton Gorrell, is a tale told by a hero (though he wouldn’t have used that term on

Darfur--Hell Without The Cameras UNITED NATIONS - In recent

years there’s been a dearth of media coverage of Darfur’s humanitarian crisis. What by John J. Metzler had once been a focus for both Syndicated Columnist diplomatic and high profile celebrity efforts to detail human rights abuses during more than a decade of inter-ethnic conflict in Sudan’s troubled western region, has subsequently been bypassed by both crisis fatigue and a host of other larger African regional conflicts. Even in 2014, the situation was grim. Over 3,000 villages were burned. Now there may be some long overdue refocus with a chilling new report of mass rapes and systematic abuses of Darfur villagers in a series of sordid incidents carried out by the Sudanese army. In late October 2014, according to a detailed report by the Human Rights Watch (HRW), Sudanese military units launched a series of attacks on civilians in the town of Tabit. “The attacks included mass

rape of women and girls and the arbitrary detention, beating and ill-treatment of scores of people,” according to HRW. During a 36-hour period the report documents 27 first-hand account cases of rape and offers “credible information” regarding an additional 194 incidents of rape. Not surprisingly the Sudan government is blocking access to the area despite its relative proximity to a major UN base in El Fasher. In the words of HRW’s Jonathan Loeb, “the attacks were organized and systematic” and possibly constitute crimes against humanity. Since the Darfur crisis started in 2003, both the Sudan regime in Khartoum and varied rebel groups have battled for supremacy over a vast and arid region. According to UN relief agencies, in 2014 alone, 450,000 people were displaced by the fighting. Over 300,000 people have died from the clashes, disease and starvation over the past twelve years. Interestingly as both sides are Islamic, religion is not a factor in the clashes. The root cause remains the Arab dominated regime in Khartoum fighting black African See Metzler on 30

himself), filled with stories about heroes. I’ve written about Henry’s book in these pages since his memoir was published posthumously in 2009. Though I never met my distant cousin, Henry has been on my mind a lot as the revelations poured out about Williams’ ofttold-tales. Journalism as a profession has faced many challenges since the days when Henry reported from foreign battlefields for the United Press wire service. Journalism has failed more than succeeded. Williams fictionalized a heroic narrative on his climb to the top – to

become a glorified editor / news reader – because, one assumes, he understood that was what his bosses required. Seventy years ago, Henry and the reporters he traveled with (including Ernie Pyle and Andy Rooney) faced the real dangers of war to get the story, not a promotion. In doing his job, Henry earned the label “hero,” and received a medal proving it. Henry was the first journalist to be award the Air Medal, a military honor. Like most real heroes, Henry didn’t brag about the medal in his memoir. Like most of his battleSee gorrell on 26

Measles, Vaccines and Autism The current controversy over whether parents should be forced to have their children vaccinated for measles is one of the painful signs of our by Thomas Sowell times. MeaSyndicated Columnist sles was virtually wiped out in the United States, years ago. Why the resurgence of this disease now? The short answer is that false claims, based on other false claims, led many parents to stop getting their children vaccinated against measles. The key false claim was that the vaccine for measles caused an increase in autism. This claim was made in 1998 by a doctor writing in a distinguished British medical journal, so it is understandable that many parents took it seriously, and did not want to run the risk of having their child become autistic. Fortunately, others took the claim seriously in a very different sense. They did massive studies involving half a million children in Denmark and two million children in Sweden. These studies showed that there was no higher incidence of autism among children who had been vaccinated than among children who had not been vaccinated. Incidentally, the “evidence” on which the original claim that vaccines caused autism was based was just 12 children. But the campaign to convince the public was a

masterpiece of propaganda. The story line was that pharmaceutical companies who produced the vaccine were callously risking and sacrificing helpless children in pursuit of profit. This is the kind of dramatic stuff the media love. It never seemed to occur to the media that lawyers who were suing pharmaceutical companies had a vested interest in this story line that the media fed on to the public. Unfortunately, it takes time to run careful scientific studies, involving vast numbers of children in different countries. That allowed the propaganda against vaccines to go on for years. Eventually, however, the results of the studies so completely discredited the claim that the measles vaccine caused autism that the medical journal which had published the article publicly repudiated it. The doctor who wrote the article had his license revoked. By this time, however, there was a whole anti-vaccine movement, and crusading movements are seldom stopped by facts. This was not the only false claim involved. What made that claim seem plausible was a highly publicized increase in the number of children diagnosed as being autistic or being “on the autism spectrum.” What was not so widely publicized was that the definition of “autism” had expanded over the years to include children who would never have been called autistic by the standards set up when autism was defined by its discoverer, Professor Leo KanSee Sowell on 30

How to Avoid Common Mistakes In Wedding Planning Planning is the key to a great wedding. Some people may try to wing but that is not recommended if you truly want a wedding that will be lovely and memorable. When planning a wedding there seem to be a few mistakes that can be avoided from the onset and we are going to make you aware of them and give you tips on how to avoid them.

get from the beginning so that you do not go into debt. When planning your wedding budget you have to remember to include things like tips Inviting Everyone You Ever Met: Does the mailman really need an invitation, the hairdresser, Co-workers you barely know? Close friends and family, well yeah go ahead and invite them, but with the average per person cost being $150.00 it adds up really fast. You can invite some people to the ceremony and not the reception - this is acceptable. Or you can invite only family and close relations to the wedding, which means a cheaper smaller venue and more people to the reception. The typical reception is for 150 people with a 10% decline rate, however always book a venue as if you expect everyone to accept. Leftover space is better than not enough

I Am Going To Lose Weight: Many brides get down to the final fitting only to find that they did not actually lose enough to fit the dress that they bought a size smaller. Taking in a wedding dress is easier than letting it out. Get the size you are right now and then if you manage some weight loss have it altered. Transportation: Hiring a car service is about more than feeling like royalty on your

wedding day. You will be stressed out enough without having to navigate traffic and worrying about getting to the wedding on time. By hiring a professional car service you can take that time to calm your nerves and at the end of the day ride off into the sunset worry free. In closing we hope that you find what we have stated here helpful to you as you start your wedding planning process. Make use of the technological advances available to you

(Family Features) Marriage is a milestone in life; yet, many enter into the next phase without asking their spouse some vital questions about money. If you are among the soonto-be wed, consider starting a conversation using the questions below. Couples who plan their expenses ahead of time are more likely to enjoy their earnings, and less likely to need credit repair intervention. Men, Women And Weddings Females are often

their dream wedding. The study also found that both men and women valued financial responsibility. In fact, 91% indicated a preference for entering marriage debt-free as opposed to having a dream wedding. “Marriage is a lifelong commitment built on trust, clear communication and honesty,â€? said John Heath, Directing Attorney for Lexington Law. “While some may find financial discussions unnecessary, understanding each other intimately in terms of what you both bring to the table – be it wealth or debt – will strengthen your relationship and help to avoid potentially serious friction to your marriage down the road.â€? Discussing Money Matters So how does one go into a marriage with a solid financial standing? Those soon-to-be-wed couples who converse openly about their finances are more likely to enjoy their big day with an understanding of their mate’s views on money. The experts at Lexington Law offer these questions every newly engaged couple should ask before the big day: 1. How do you view money? This is a loaded question, but your fiancÊ’s answer will help you understand their perspective and how it aligns with yours. Here are a few conversation starters on the subject: •How do you budget your money? See finances on 11

finances from 10

•Are you meticulous about your bills and expenses, or are you comfortable to just “wing it?” •What’s the most you would ever spend on a home, car, piece of clothing, etc.? 2. How should we budget for a family? Kids are expensive, especially if you haven’t planned for them. Talk to your partner about how many kids you would both like to have. Plan for child living expenses and how they will impact your budget, i.e. clothes, food, activities, medical expenses, schooling, etc. 3. How should we communicate about money? Some couples are content to let one person handle the finances, and others like to split up the bills and share household responsibilities. Regardless of what you decide, it is important to have a plan in place before getting married. 4. What should we do when we disagree about spending? You and your spouse won’t agree on everything.

In fact, you may completely disagree on how to spend, save, and generally manage your money. The question is: What should you do when these disagreements arise? Avoiding the subject will put you at greater risk for financial (and marital) trouble. There’s no easy answer for this one, but presenting the topic during your conversation is a good start. 5. Do you have any debts that I should be aware of? Secrets aren’t the best addition to a marriage, especially when it comes to debt. Be sure you and your soon-to-be put the credit cards on the table before walking down the aisle. Marriage is a life partnership; start by dealing with your debt together. You’ll head into your new life as a married couple with ease when you have an open and honest dialog about your financial situation. When you witness your first bluebird, you’ll know why Thoreau claimed that these birds carry the sky on their backs. In the right light, no other bird shows its true American colors than the Eastern bluebird. That marvelous blue forms the backdrop for the rusty, red chest and white belly. Bluebirds are permanent residents in the southern USA, but are typical migrants in the northern regions. They arrive on their breeding grounds early in the spring, around mid-March and usually depart for the winter in September. The Eastern, Western and Mountain bluebirds make up the three distinct species in America. All three species prefer plenty of open habitat surround by trees and shrubs. These birds are called cavity nesters and will utilize dead and living trees for raising their young. Nests are primarily built by the female and they typically lay 4 or 5 light blue eggs. Females do the incubating while the males provide food and sustenance for their mate. The incubation period is about two weeks and the hatchlings will spend another three weeks in the nest before fledging. Bluebirds fell on hard times in the last century when the widespread cutting of trees eliminated potential nest cavities. Being opportunists, the bluebirds switched to cavities in wooden fence posts. When it was discovered that these wonderful birds would happily utilize madmade nest boxes, the species rebounded. Thousands of bluebird aficionados put up nest boxes throughout the country and in a decade, the number of successful bluebird nestings dramatically increased. Bluebird trails became a regular feature at farms and golf courses. Man had righted a wrong and this American bird shined again. Mealworms are a favorite staple of these wild birds. Freeze dried medium-sized mealworms are available for purchase during the cold March weather. As the temperatures allow, you can serve live mealworms to your colorful visitors in specially designed mealworm feeders or in a simple dish. An average bluebird family can consume approximately 500 meal-

worms in a single day. Break out of your winter doldrums by trying to attract bluebirds to your backyard. Once you see that red, white and blue, you’ll be singing right alongside them as they spread their joy to all who will listen. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. DEAR TIM: Oh, you’ve got a problem, but the good news it’s not too terribly difficult to solve it. Before I tell you what I’d do, I should discuss backerboard. What you call backerboard might be something entirely different from what I call backerboard. I’m quite concerned that you don’t really have a

DEAR TIM: I embarked on a simple caulking repair around my bathtub that’s now turned into a quest. While pulling out old caulk I discovered loose tile. After removing four rows of tile up from the top of the tub, I then was met by a crumbling wall surface behind the tile. I took out this material and have now installed new backerboard. The issue is the new backerboard is not flush with the old that’s exposed just below the tile still on the wall. How do I remedy this situation? What would you do? Money is tight so please don’t tell me to tear everything out and start over. That option is not on the wall, so to speak. --Tim D., Everett, Massachusetts

This needs to be corrected. waterproof backerboard since you said it crumbled. Technically, you have a board that backing up tile, so I guess you can call it backerboard. My guess is that you might have some version of a water-resistant gypsum board behind your tile. If that’s the case, then there’s a good chance that the tile you still have on the wall will eventually fail when the water that penetrates the grout between the tiles degrades the paper covering the gypsum core. Let’s talk for a moment about the old days. I feel obligated to do this so we have a baseline of the ul-

timate backer behind ceramic tile. That would be concrete. Houses built in the first half of the 20th century had ceramic wall and floor tile that was set on real concrete. The master tile setters would install wire mesh on walls and then coat it with two coats of coarse sand concrete made with real Portland cement, producing a smooth and plumb sandy surface that was perfect for the high-quality tile that loves to be set on surfaces in the same plane. The best tile setters did the work so that the tile was set on the third day

major league pro athlete to go into harm’s way. Sadly, Tillman was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan. ASU’s Sun Devils prominently honor his legacy. After Pearl Harbor was attacked, numerous Hollywood stars—everyone from Clark Gable to Jimmy Stewart—put on their country’s uniform and went into harm’s way. Herman Goering, the head of Nazi Germany’s Luftwaffe, actually put a bounty on Gable’s head. While visiting the Tillman Center it occurred to me that Fahim was probably the only Hollywood SAG (Screen Actor’s Guild) member to put on a uniform and go into harm’s way following the 9/11 attacks. Fahim also had an enemy (the Taliban) that put a bounty on HIS head. I was proud to note that my friend had much in common with both Clark Gable and Pat Tillman. The Arizona visit was a whirlwind of class visits, media interviews, and book signings. An ASU friend of Senator John McCain asked that we sign a book for the senator, and my inscription reminded McCain that he had many friends in New Hampshire, which the senator has often called his “second favorite state.” And Arizona is now MY second favorite state. I was filled with warm feelings when I later boarded a plane to return to N.H. I would need those warm feelings. My flight to Manchester airport got in after midnight. It was below zero. My Nissan Sentra had two feet of snow on it and wouldn’t start. All I had on was the light jacket I’d worn to Arizona. Aye carumba! It all had the makings for a Jamie O’Neal coun-

try song, if only it was a truck that wouldn’t start, instead of a car! THE TAXMAN COMETH Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady is facing a $60,500 bill from the IRS just for winning the game, according to internet sources. Americans for Tax Reform claims Brady will have to pay $42,000 on his share of the $97,000 he won for playing in the title tilt, and another $18,500 for giving away the red Chevy Colorado pickup truck he won for being MVP to teammate Malcolm Butler, who made the game-saving interception. “No good deed goes unpunished,” as the saying goes. Readers will recall observations in this space last year about how various government taxes and fees appropriated MOST of Phil’s earnings after Mickelson won the Scottish and British Opens a couple years ago. Now the current administration in Washington wants to further raise taxes on successful, hard-working achievers—while a majority of citizens pay no income taxes at all. At some point, the Phil Mickelsons of the world are going to say “Why bother to compete?” Aye carumba! Sports Quiz Who was the first 50-year-old driver to win a 500 mile race? All photographed in their own backyards after following advice from White on how to attract them. Growing up in Massachusetts, White, along with his siblings, spent a lot of time working with his grandfather, who was

a florist, weeding the garden and learning how to keep birds away since they were a natural nemesis to the flower growing process. “Those were the first seeds of knowledge driven by my youth,” said White. In 1990, Steve and his family moved to Bristol, New Hampshire. Steve was working for Shaw’s Supermarkets at the time and was now assigned to the Concord store.

“I had a lot of experience in food management and decided that if I was going to work as much as I was working then I wanted to do it for myself,” said White. “I decided that it would be best to focus on a business that involved a hobby instead of a necessity like food. I also don’t want to be a franchise, I wanted to be independent.” Over the next couple of

This photo of Steve White was taken in 1997 when the Weirs Times did a story on Wild Bird Depot which was only in business for a little over a year at the time. years he did his homework. He found that one out of three Americans feed birds and that it was the second most popular hobby behind gardening. Even taking the combined totals spent on hunting and fishing, birding was still number two. He talked with owners of similar stores all around the country, many who were happy to help him. Understanding that sixty-five million people had an interest in birding, he studied the local demographics and settled on the current location on Route 11 as the best spot to open the new store. “It was a process of learning what was the best area and who our customers would be,” said White. Based on the success that Wild Bird Depot has seen since that opening in 1995, it is apparent that the research paid off. “We aren’t a bird store we are really a nature store,” said White who explained that there really was a lot to learn about the industry as a whole and that half of his store is dedicated to gift items related to birding and nature. “As far as birds go I am still learning

every day.” The incredible amount of knowledge that White has accumulated over the years has been essential in relating to his customers who are much more knowledgeable and more sophisticated than they were twenty years ago. Besides the tribute to what he has learned and taught that covers the wall in photographs in the store, White has become a nationally known figure in the backyard birding industry over they years. He is often a guest speaker at conventions in St. Louis and Atlanta and Wild Bird Depot is known throughout the country. He appears on WEZS radio as host of “Bird Calls” and he is a popular weekly columnist for this paper as well where his “Something Wild Backyard Photo Contest” has a wide following. Through his many travels he has made close connections with manufacturers who have turned to him to help with the testing of some of their new items. This connection has allowed him great discounts that he can pass along to his customers. See bird on 23

“My prices on seed are equal to or lower than anyone else’s, said White. As Steve tells it, one of the prime reasons for his success is his honesty in telling customers how to attract birds. He sees empty nesters now as a big part of his clientele but also finds that the younger generation of today is not as interested in birding and other outdoor activities mostly because of the advent of electronics which leads to them spending less time outside with nature. made more backyards habitable for different species. “We hear a lot about the negativity of the human effect on the environment but we don’t hear about the positive aspect, said White. “Our backyards and backyard birds are a perfect example of that. Here in New England it is more prevalent with more things like bird baths, flower gardens, compost piles and alike. This May, Wild Bird Depot will be having a celebration to commemorate their 20th anniversary. Though many of the details

are being kept under wraps at the present time, you can be sure it will be something to bring a whole new dimension to birding. We will keep you posted. A visit to Wild Bird Depot and even just a few minutes with Steve White is enough to bring a new excitement to the hobby of birding to those already hooked and it just might be the start of a whole new adventure to those who are merely curious.

builder from 19

from the start of the job so the cement paste they used to set the tile chemically and mechanically bonded with the sandy concrete mix that had just been installed the day before. This is why if you go into an older home like my father-in-law’s, the original tile is still on the walls and the only way you’re getting it off is with a 4-, 8- or 16pound hammer. Tile set this way can stay on walls for hundreds of years as long as the wood studs the metal lath it’s attached to don’t rot. When new construction surged for the baby boom generation, companies tried to create products that took the place of the labor-intensive concrete put on the walls and floors. Some manufacturers went for a water-resistant drywall or gypsum panel. I remember, as a very young builder, thinking this gyp-

sum product was great. It wasn’t. Then a company started to produce sheets of sandy concrete that was the same thickness as drywall and could be nailed or screwed to the walls. This product is still made and it’s as waterproof as the original concrete troweled onto the houses of old. There are other gypsumcore products that claim to be waterproof and are easier to install than the sheets of concrete. You may want to look at these if your project scope increases. Here’s what you need to know about ceramic tile. It looks best if it’s installed on surfaces that are flat and in the same plane. This means you might want to take down your backerboard and shim behind it before attaching it to the wall to ensure it’s in the same plane as the piece you don’t want to remove. Your other option, and

it requires greater skill, is to leave what you have on the wall and float a layer of cement mortar or tile thinset over the lower piece of backerboard so you fill this gap you’ve got between the two boards. Realize that glazed ceramic tile will telegraph the slightest defect in the subsurface. Light will be reflected differently off any highly glazed tile that’s not in the same plane as the one adjacent to it. Humps, dips or other defects in the backerboard will be obvious. This is one reason it’s a great idea to use metal studs any place you’ll install wall tile in new construction or remodeling. These framing members are straight and true, and any large sheet that’s flat attached to the metal studs will produce a surface all in the same plane. Ceramic tile loves to be laid on surfaces like this and you’ll have a much easier time installing the tile if you can make this happen. I wish you the best of luck on the remainder of your ceramic tile journey! Need an answer? All of Tim’s past columns are archived for free at www. AsktheBuilder.com.

over the world. Of course, slavery was wrong. But, we SAY it is wrong. This administration seems to be bending over backwards to make terrorists the ‘victims’ here. Nothing could be further from the truth. Presidential speeches are written very carefully. So, exactly WHY did our President use THIS language at THIS event? How can we defeat a murderous ideology when you cannot even call it what it is? The President’s words almost seem to be propaganda FOR the radical cause. His words will most certainly be repeated to fuel even more hatred against Americans, Christians, and Jews. Why would our President do this? But, I guess we must remember, this is the same president who said, “It’s not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or antitrade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” Frustration is right. Frustration when we get misrepresentations displayed as truth. Frustration that we have a president who cares more about his Progressive/ One World ideology than the dealing with a bunch of murderous thugs. This president continues to speak contemptuously of his own citizens. “High horse” indeed. This Prayer Breakfast was a wonderful opportunity to try to bring people together with hope and love and faith. Instead, our President once more stirs the pot and divides with his words And to what end? The answer may be staring us in the face. Yes, sir. VERY frustrating.

field stories, he limited his role to the teller of somebody else’s tale. When his own story necessarily took center stage – as when he was twice captured during Spain’s civil war and sentenced to death – he writes about it with the air of “here’s another fine mess I found myself in.” Unlike Williams, there was not a braggadocious bone is Henry’s body. The incident that resulted in the awarding of the Air Medal was similarly told – just another day on the job. Yet that day Henry saved the life of an airman on a B-24 during a bombing mission over Navarino Bay, Greece. Henry chose to fly with the crew of “The Witch,” the bomber assigned as the last plane in the formation. He knew what that meant: The last plane would fly over the target long after enemy fighters had been alerted and the anti-aircraft batteries had refined their targeting. But for Henry, the story was all important, and the last plane would afford him views of the devastation other correspondents on that raid would not see. I had the privilege of talking with the pilot of “The Witch.” He remembered Henry and that night as if it had happened the week before. How could he forget a mission where his plane had been shot to pieces, a crewman nearly killed by strafing, and the flight home was a battle to stay in the air? Even at ninety-two and decades after the fact, his recollection of events that night was entirely consistent with Henry’s reporting and the public record. Their stories were told with humility foreign to many of today’s media personalities. Heroic narratives are earned, not created. They are not resumé bullets. As the spot light fades on Brian Williams, it should be shined brightly into the dark corners of NBC. We need less peacock, more turkey from the talking heads at Nightly News. nomadic farmers and herders in Darfur. In 2007, after years of watching the crisis unfold, the UN deployed the African Union/UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) whose 16,000 troops and police are sparsely deployed across the region the size of France. The force has had mixed success in stopping the fighting. According to HRW’s Philip Bolopion, the African Union force is “missing in action when it comes to pressing for a credible investigation to rape allegations in Tabit. Both diplomatic and human rights campaigners share frustration with the UNAMID military mission. While the UN Security Council has yet again tightened economic sanctions on the Sudan regime, in the wider political picture, both Russia and Mainland China have traditionally provided diplomatic cover fire for the Khartoum rulers. Human Rights Watch calls upon the Prosecutor of International Criminal

Court (ICC) to investigate “the allegations of rape and other crimes within the ICC’s mandate. Significantly, the International Criminal Court has indicted Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for genocide and crimes against humanity. Equally, HRW calls on the African Union to urgently dispatch a heads of state mission to Khartoum to discuss UNAMID access with Sudan’s government. While some diplomats and human rights officials are calling for wider involvement of the African Union (AU), the fact remains that Sudan’s authoritarian regime is not likely to come under pressure from an organization whose current Chairman is Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, one of the continent’s longest serving dictators. Sudan’s abysmal human rights situation, though well known, has been overlooked in recent years due to a number of factors. There’s the usual crisis overload of competing trag-

edies, frustration with not being able to change the hard political logic, and the support both Moscow and Beijing offer to Khartoum’s rulers. The fact that Sudan is a major petroleum producer with close links to China plays no small role either. While the horrors of Tabit may be politely overlooked or denied by some states who support Sudan, this contemporary crime evokes so many other “forgotten villages in Bosnia and Croatia where less than a generation ago, the same horrors befell the inhabitants. Their ghosts still linger for justice. The villagers of Tabit deserve no less recognition. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. ner of the Johns Hopkins medical school, back in 1943. Professor Kanner fought against the expansion of the definition of autism but, after his death, the definition continued to expand -- and the number of children who met the expanded definition greatly increased. There were financial incentives for this expansion. Late-talking children, for example, could get government programs to pay for their treatment if they were designated as autistic or on the autism spectrum. Despite headlines and hysteria about skyrocketing numbers of children diagnosed as autistic, the number of children who meet the original definition of autism has been relatively stable in recent years, at about one quarter of one percent of all children, according to Professor Stephen Camarata of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in his recent book, “Late-Talking Children. malkin from 6

benefits that have become enshrined permanently. But it’s not just partisan hacks in Washington who’ve so falsely demonized those opposed to endless unemployment checks as a “job creation vehicle. During the contentious debate over extending UI checks as part of the Obama stimulus in 2009, I argued on an ABC “This Week with George Stephanopoulos panel, “If you put enough government cheese in front of people, they are just going to keep eating it. Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Cynthia Tucker took offense, mischaracterizing standard economic arguments for moral judgment. “Does the right really believe the unemployed are lazy? she wailed. The left-leaning journalism outfit at PolitiFact jumped on board, rating my 100 percent-true reference to decades of labor economics literature on UI’s impact on joblessness “half-true. And the George Soros-funded hitmen of

It may be significant that the number of children regarded as mentally retarded has fallen by numbers similar to the rise in the number of children regarded as autistic. According to Professor Camarata, “This too suggests that changes in definitions and in diagnostic practices are contributing to the perceived ‘epidemic’ of autism. Does this mean that vaccines are safe? In a categorical sense, nothing on the face of the earth is 100 percent safe -- including going unvaccinated. But the claim that vaccines cause autism has been discredited by evidence. Some say the decision to vaccinate or not should be the parents’ choice. That would be fine if their child would live isolated from other children. But that is impossible. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. His website is www.tsowell. com.

Media Matters called me and several other conservatives “reality-deniers for stating the bloody obvious about UI’s warped incentives -- even though their favorite “progressive economist Paul Krugman acknowledged that “everyone agrees that really generous unemployment benefits, by reducing the incentive to seek jobs, can raise the NAIRU (the minimum rate of unemployment consistent with a stable inflation rate). The politicians posing as economy-healers and the political operatives posing as journalists will no doubt find clever ways to slice, dice and explain away the latest NBER findings. But this simple truth endures: Government dependency doesn’t “create jobs. It kills them.
