The Stone Hut was built in 1936 for a warming hut by the Civilian Conservation Corp by some of the same crew that cut the original ski trails. The hut sits under Mansfield’s Nose, not far from the top of the FourRunner high speed quad lift. The hut is operated by the Vermont Department of Forest, Parks and Recreation

in partnership with the Stowe Mountain Resort. Lucky winners of a lottery held each fall get the chance to rent the Stone Hut for a few nights sometime between midNovember and mid-April. Stowe Mountain Resort is a classic ski mountain. Mount Mansfield’s Chin is Vermont’s high point at elevation 4,395 feet. The Resort’s trails are snuggled beneath the mountain’s rugged ridgeline and drop to the valley floor. Skiers and snowboarders can run over 2,100 vertical feet of fun. More vertical can be found

following the Stowe Derby route to town via the Toll Road or if you know a local you could end up out of bounds on the back roads over in Underhill. The snow conditions were wonderful and the mountain was 100% open. The famous front four double black diamonds, Goat, National, Liftline and Starr had the best snow cover you could imagine. Skiers have been conquering these trails

You Can’t Fool Everyone! by Steve White Contributing Writer

You may not wish to acknowledge this as you look out your frosty windows, but winter is beginning to loosen its grip on our region,. After two trips on the roof to remove several feet of snow, you begin to look for any signs of hope for the upcoming warm seasons. The signs of spring are everywhere if you know what to look and listen for. Those large flocks of mourning doves you see each day seem to be spending considerable time chasing each other on the branches of trees or on your deck railing. This is a courtship ritual, with the male attempting an introduction to the female. However, she may not wish to entertain his advances at this time. The drumming you hear in the distance during the months of February and March are also early sounds of spring. Unlike most birds, woodpeckers don’t sing. They drum to attract a mate at the end of winter and to announce a territory. They rap their bills frequently and methodically on the loudest surface they can find such as telephone poles, metal drain pipes, hollow trees, even houses. If you think this is an irritant to some, you may be correct. After all, there is that small issue involving the 1995 Space Shuttle mission that had to be delayed because of this habit. You see, it was discovered that a flock of flickers had tapped six little holes into the Discovery’s external fuel tank! Want to know just how big backyard bird feeding

has become? Just ask the CBS network. In the summer of 2001, the Buick Open Golf Tournament was played in Pontiac Michigan. Listeners were entertained to the background natural sounds of wood thrush, hermit thrush, and even white-throated sparrows. However, just one week later, the same network was televising the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. The listeners to this tournament were also entertained to the same background bird sounds. But guess what? A whole lot of intelligent backyard birders know that there isn’t a whitethroated sparrow within 500 hundred miles of Kentucky in August! The CBS network was actually dubbing bird sounds from the previous weeks’ golf tournament and got caught. After showered with complaints, they had to admit their deception. It made the nightly news around the country. A senior spokesperson couldn’t believe that so many people would be able

to recognize correct bird sounds during a major sporting event. It seems the national media were in denial of a basic American fact. They are just now beginning to understand that over 65 million Americans now describe themselves as backyard bird feeders. It is the fastest growing outdoor recreational hobby in every sector of the country. Enjoy your birds, you’re not alone! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Steve White is a contributing author in major publications, a guest lecturer at major conventions in Atlanta and St. Louis as well as the host of WEZS 1350AM radio show “Bird Calls” with Lakes Region Newsday @ 8:30AM. And it seems Rep. Peter King (R-NY) has had just about enough of these House Republicans who continue to play petty partisan games with our government. “This madness has to end soon. We can’t keep doing this, King said during an interview with MSNBC. “We should not put American lives at risk to win an immigration battle with the president, he continued. “I’ve had it with this self-righteous, delusional wing of the party. And that’s the bottom line to all of this. It doesn’t really matter what King or any other Republican thinks of what the president has done on immi-

ported the Patriot Act. A lot of education has flowed forth since 2001, all of it sobering. If I could go back to 2001, I would have said this. No way are you screwing around and making the government bigger. We have a Department of Defense. These Islamists attacked us. They are savages. I want a damned war declared on them and make Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, or where ever this scum resides a free fire zone. You are not touching my Liberty, I didn’t do anything to deserve any limitation upon it. The Saudis financed this and bred this killer, now they are going to bear the consequences. Instead, I supported Bush, destruction of liberty and the consolidation of government power. When you are attacked you neutralize the threat. You don’t navel gaze and constrain, you find the enemy and you kill them unless they have a white flag up and have thrown down their weapons. Lesson learned. This article just underlines that our political system does not have two parties. It is progressives versus the citizens of the country. King is just another high profile example. Progressives control both the donkeys and the elephants. Donkeys and elephants are two fund raising arms of the same party. We the people are being handled like “a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. (Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America, 1840). It is time to take your country back America. You might like to hear some of our hour by hour radio program podcast for last Saturday See Advocates on 30

Scheduling Conflict

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

I really have to do a better job of researching things before I schedule something. But really, who has the time? Next Friday, March 20th, has been designated “Fresh Air Fund Day’ by Governor Hassan. The Fresh Air Fund is a great program that gives thousands of inner-city kids the chance get away from the chaotic streets of New York to enjoy a few weeks in the Lakes Region and other tourist crazed areas of the state during the summer. A press release on the designation of “Fresh Air Fund Day says that “the program gives children a chance to run barefoot through the grass or gaze at the star-filled skies. I think the Fresh Air Fund is a great idea. Such a great idea, in fact, that years ago it inspired me to start my own program. I call it “The Air Is A Little Bit Better Here Than Where I Come From Fund or TAIALBBHTWICF Fund. The idea behind TAIALBBHTWICF Fund is to give upper middle class and upper class folks who are too busy to book a few weeks at an exquisite lakeside home for their summer vacation an acceptable place to go; a place they won’t be embarrassed to tell their neighbors and colleagues about upon their return. Having been way too busy and waited until the

last possible second to reserve a spot on the lake, they often find themselves stuck with nowhere to go except maybe a completely unacceptable condo rental with only two bathrooms and a (gasp) pull out bed for company. This, of course, just won’t cut it. TAIALBBHTWICF Fund was established to help those in such dire straits find an acceptable solution. Not wanting them to spend their summer stuck in their gated communities while their neighbors are off for the summer at a famous vacation spot for the wellto-do and then having to face the phony sympathetic words and behind the back whispers within their own communities once summer is over, we help them save face by working our hardest to find a place on the lakes or ocean that is suitable for their unforgiving lifestyles. TAIALBBHTWICF Fund has been so successful over the years that we have planned our annual fundraising gala for this Friday, March 13th, at an undisclosed location so as to keep out the riffraff. That is why I was a bit taken by surprise to see the designation of March 20th as Fresh Air Fund Day. I certainly didn’t mean to step on any toes and try to steal their spotlight. They do good work as well. I was even slightly embarrassed to read that our press release, which was sent to a limited few in the media like Barron’s and The Wall Street Journal, was eerily reminiscent of the one sent out about Fresh Air Fund Day saying things like: “We are looking for those with luxurious homes who are willing to rent them out, for big bucks,

to give some well to do, yet vacation needy families, a chance to run their properly sandaled feet through finely manicured lawns or to gaze at star filled skies unencumbered by nuisance lights from neighbors who are way too close. If I had known that TAIALBBHTWICF Fund event was going to be so close to the Fresh Air Fund event I never would have scheduled it in the first place. In fact, I did consider rescheduling it but the families who had already begrudgingly accepted my invitation to be part of this fundraising event have made it clear that any other day would now be an annoyance as it would interfere with their busy schedule of business meetings and reservations that have already been made at busy, hard to get a table at, restaurants. I’m hoping that there won’t be much confusion with the dates so close together either. I would hate to think that someone whose intent is to contribute to the Fresh Air Fund mistakenly directs their donations toward us instead. If that does happen we will, of course, do the right thing, whatever that is. I am planning to do better research next year and maybe even coordinate things with the Fresh Air Fund so that these dates don’t clash again. Maybe I will even be able to convince the governor that next year we could have a day just for TAIALBBHTWICF Fund. We didn’t donate to her last campaign, so I realize I will have some persuading to do. Brendan’s new book “The Best Of A F.O.O.L in New Hampshire will be published in early spring.

Going Bananas: A Case Study in MediaManufactured Racism Political correctness is a pathological disorder. You can’t say “niggardly” or “black holes” or “chink in the armor” withby Michelle Malkin out provokSyndicated Columnist ing protests or risking your job. You can’t invoke the Constitution or call illegal behavior “illegal” without being accused of hatred. And now, you can’t goof around at a high school basketball game in silly costumes without the world accusing you of “racial insensitivity.” Last week, thanks to hyperbolic grievance-mongers and irresponsible reporters, the students of Holy Spirit High School in Absecon, N.J., garnered international headlines and Internet infamy. “Shocking moment students at Catholic school dressed as monkeys and a banana and taunted black basketball players ... and DIDN’T get punished,” the U.K. Daily Mail blared last week. “Students who taunted black players at New Jersey basketball game get warning, no punishment,” USA Today decried. Bossip.com, “the premier destination for African-American pop culture and entertainment,” exclaimed: “Really?!? White High School Students Taunt Black Basketball Team in Monkey and Banana Costumes.” No, not really. If any of these media outlets had bothered breathing into paper bags before making abject fools of themselves, they might have actually committed journalism. Holy Spirit is a tight-knit community

with a 50-year tradition of excellence in academics, sports and character education. I know more than a little about the school and its student body because I am a proud alumna of H.S.H.S. and have stayed in touch with many of its dedicated teachers and administrators over the years. Part of Holy Spirit’s half-century legacy includes a storied athletic rivalry with nearby Atlantic City High School. The competition between the Holy Spirit Spartans and the Atlantic City Vikings has always been fierce but friendly. At a basketball game two weeks ago, Holy Spirit students decided to show their team spirit by recreating Arizona State University’s famous “Curtain of Distraction” during their rivals’ foul shots. Unlike the pot-stirrers who’ve turned an innocent prank into an international p.c. incident, Holy Spirit’s senior class president Pat Shober was actually in the stands on Feb. 18 during the game. He donned a green ballerina tutu for the foul shot skits. Other students scrounged up a bumblebee suit, monkey pajamas, costumes for Dorothy from the “Wizard of Oz,” a jack-o’-lantern and a banana. “The fan section was louder than it had been all season long, and the fans, of both sides I may add, were thoroughly amused and actually complimented many of us on our actions numerous times both at the game itself and throughout the time since then,” Shober recounted in an open letter to the public. “Racism was not brought up once by a student, player or spectator that night. We intended no racist connotations during our performances that night.” The Spartans had used the costumes at previous games without

If you are like me, you occasionally experience passing moments of panic when you stop to think where we are heading by Jane Cormier as a nation. Not Hooksett, NH. only do we have a president who is overly-exercising his “pen and phone” with executive orders, bypassing the vote of Congress on MAJOR issues, you have a certain malaise in our country, regarding this unconstitutional activity. Fast forward here to NH. We have the same type of “Executive Order Disorder” going on right here in the Granite State. And, it is a VERY important issue for families and parental rights. On January 26, NH Dept. of Education Commissioner, Virginia Barry sent out to school officials a “Technical Advisory” re: “Statewide Assessment Participation”. See malkin on 30 In this advisory, Barry declares

the following: “Each year, a statewide assessment shall be administered in all school districts in the state in grades 3 through 8 and one grade in high school. All public school students in the designated grades shall participate in the assessment…There is no “opting out” option for students in the law”. SAU, District and/or school personnel do not have the authority to develop or sign any form allowing a student to not take the assessment… Further, the districts’ legal obligation must supersede parental demands that their child not take the assessment.” Wow. That is a mouthful. A BIG mouthful. Barry declaring there is no “opting out” of Smarter Balance Assessments is refuted by her own January 13 “Technical Advisory”, in which she states, “…there are no laws in the State of NH or rules a the NH Dept. of Education that would penalize a student for not participating in the statewide assessment. China Forging Closer Links with Latin America UNITED NATIONS--Amid a near unquenchable thirst for natural resources, a desire to develop new trading partners, and by John J. Metzler an opportuniSyndicated Columnist ty to press for political influence in a vast region increasingly ignored by the United States, the People’s Republic of China is forging ahead to develop closer ties with Latin America. The links go well beyond Beijing’s traditional comradely relations with communist Cuba and extend to strong commercial ties to powerful resource-rich countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela. Contemporary China is not exporting Marxism but promoting markets in a region which retains vast raw materials as well as potential customers. Agricultural products, Mining, and Petroleum are among the abundant resources Latin American producers have for a still strong Chinese market. In January Beijing hosted a high level forum between China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean states (CELAC) where the Chinese government pledged to boost Latin American trade to $500 billion in the next decade. PRC President Xi Jinping pledged to invest $250 billion in Latin America over the next five years. Loans by Chinese state owned banks to the region rose to $22 billion n 2014 up from $13 billion

the previous year. One country particularly close to China is Venezuela, an increasingly authoritarian regime who now is facing drastic economic downturn from both an underproductive socialist economy and plunging petroleum prices. While high oil prices had once buoyed massive social spending during the Hugo Chavez era, Venezuela’s current ruler Nicolas Maduro recently visited Beijing, hat in hand, and claimed to get $20 billion. Just a few years earlier, Chavez, savored a cozy relationship with Mainland China, basically bartering Venezuelan oil for Chinese loans and investment. Since 2007, Venezuela has received $56 billion from the People’s Republic. According to the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washington-based think tank, PRC loans and investment in Latin America exceed $119 billion since 2005. Significantly Chinese aid exceeds either the World Bank and the Inter American Development Bank. Many diplomats concede that Beijing’s aid comes with “far less strings” attached than do other more transparent international loan packages. Brazil, as a resource-rich and emerging economy equally has been granted considerable Chinese loans; $8.6 billion last year. Brazil’s emerging middle class and export oriented policies have allowed this South American giant to become one of Beijing’s closest trading partners. Importantly Chinese loans to Brazil have focused on the energy infrastructure and financial sector.

Argentina, despite its amazing agricultural and natural resources has long suffered from bad government. Here too, China is opening new commercial doors with loans of $7 billion in 2014. In Argentina, loans are focused on revitalization

of rail transport and transportation infrastructure. Yet Beijing’s loans are not only focused on the big countries. Medium sized Ecuador, an oil producer with an increasingly

Random Thoughts When President Obama keeps talking about “violent extremists” in the abstract, you might wonder whether Presbyterians are running amok. by Thomas Sowell The mainSyndicated Columnist stream media seem desperate to try to find something to undermine Republican governor Scott Walker’s rise in the polls. The worst they have come up with is that he didn’t finish college. Neither did Bill Gates or Michael Dell. The Wright brothers didn’t finish high school. Neither did Abraham Lincoln or George Washington. Have you noticed that there seem to be an ever growing number of things that we are not supposed to say in public? Given the Obama administration’s repeatedly failed policies in the Middle East and the lost credibility of the president’s glib pronouncements, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress may be many Americans’ first chance to get a realistic assessment of the Middle East situation and its potential for international catastrophe. Attempts to bring order out of the chaos in the paper jungle of my office usually get nowhere until I finally break everything down into just two categories: (1) urgently needed and (2) trash to be thrown out. It is going to take time to secure the border, and it ought to take time for Congress to explore the facts about immigrants from different countries before voting on new immigration legislation. Both processes can be going on at the same time. But those who want border security laws and immigration laws passed together -- “comprehensive

immigration reform” -- are for denying us that time. Why? State Department official Marie Harf said, “We cannot win this war by killing them” but instead we need to get to the “root causes” of jihads by providing “job opportunities.” We tried getting at the “root causes” of crime back in the 1960s -- and crime rates skyrocketed. But we stopped the Nazis in World War II by killing them, instead of setting up a jobs program in Germany. The old advertising slogan, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” may or may not have been true. But surely the West should know by now that what happens in the Middle East does not stay in the Middle East. Throwing Israel to the wolves and signing agreements with Iran will not buy “peace in our time” and allow us to further shrink the military and expand the welfare state. Academics often defend tenure, despite its many negative consequences, on grounds that it allows academic freedom for independent minds. Yet there are few places in America with more taboos and intellectual intolerance than academic campuses. The young are indoctrinated with demographic “diversity” that contrasts with a squelching of diversity of ideas on social issues. It is remarkable how the Internal Revenue Service has been “losing” e-mails that Congressional investigators want to see and how “global warming” researchers have been “losing” the raw data on which their dire predictions have been based. In the social sciences, people just frankly refuse to allow their raw data to be seen by critics of such sacred cow policies as affirmative action. The radical feminist movement, so ready to go ballistic at any little remark that can be twisted to mean something offensive to women, See Sowell on 28

How Should You Respond to Higher Interest Rates? If the Federal Reserve (Fed) raises short-term interest rates this year, as many financial professionals predict, what will it mean to you? As a consumer, you might experience the “ripple” effects if long-term interest rates eventually follow suit, affecting mortgages and other loans. But as an investor, you might quickly feel the impact of a move by the Fed — especially if you own bonds. In fact, the value of your existing bonds might drop noticeably if interest rates were to rise. That’s because no one will give you full price for your lower-paying bonds when new bonds are being issued at a higher interest rate. So if you want to sell your bonds, you might have to take a loss on them. Of course, if you were always planning to hold your bonds until maturity, you might not be overly concerned with falling prices. Assuming your bond issuers don’t default — and defaults are rare among “investment grade” bonds — you will continue collecting regular interest payments until your bonds mature, at which point they will be redeemed at full face value. Furthermore, just owning bonds can help you diversify your portfolio, which might otherwise be dominated by stocks and therefore be susceptible to big swings in value. (While diversification can help reduce the effects of volatility, it can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) However, it’s still useful to be aware of the effects of rising interest rates on bonds of different maturities. Typically, when rates rise,

long-term bonds will fall in value more than short-term bonds. So if you only owned long-term bonds, your portfolio could take a bigger hit than if you owned both short- and long-term bonds. Again, this might not be a big issue if you intend to hold bonds until they mature — but if your plans change, a drop in value in your bond holdings could be cause for concern. Furthermore, if you just owned long-term bonds, your money would be tied up, thereby not allowing you to take advantage of newly issued, higher-paying bonds. You can help protect yourself against the potential negative effects of rising interest rates by incorporating a “fixed-income ladder” in your portfolio. You can build this ladder by purchasing fixed-income securities — such as corporate or municipal bonds — in various maturities. With your ladder in place, a portion of your portfolio matures at regular intervals. Consequently, you can benefit from any increase in interest rates by reinvesting your maturing bonds at the higher rate. And if interest rates should fall, you still have your longer-term bonds working for you. (Generally, longer-term vehicles pay higher rates than shorter-term ones.) Even if the Fed does raise short-term rates in 2015, it doesn’t necessarily signal the start of a trend. Interest rate movements are notoriously hard to predict — and you probably won’t help yourself by trying to “time” your investment decisions based on where rates may be heading. But techniques such as a fixed-income ladder can work for you in all interest rate environments. So as you think about how you’ll invest in bonds in the years ahead, keep this type of “all-weather” strategy in mind. It may be able to help you keep the “guesswork” to a minimum.

be our home and private warming hut for the nine of us from noon on Wednesday until noon on Friday! (If you are interested about the lottery visit online Vermontparks. com. The primitive stone hut sleeps 12 people utilizing four full size beds and four single beds—all on wood bunks! In the center there is a big square table surrounded by four benches. There are two elevated peg boards/drying

racks that hang from the ceiling that can be lowered and raised via a rope and pulley system. The only heat is a large wood stove and thankfully there is a full woodshed outside. No candles, stoves or other fire are permitted in the hut. No electricity, no lighting, no kitchen sink or bathroom. Sounds like fun right! Yes, it was fabulous to sleep on the mountain at elevation 3,625 feet! And of course if you get up before the

lifts start spinning at 8 am it is easy to claim first run of the day! But it isn’t as primitive as it may sound. Just a hundred feet away in the Ski Patrol building we had 24 hour access to potable water and its heated bathroom. We boiled water in a pot and warmed food on top of the woodstove. A battery operated lantern was hung with Charlie’s belt from the drying rack over the center of the table and its warm glow lit the hut nicely. The woodstove kept the hut warm and sometimes hot even though the temperatures outside at night were far below zero. We all brought up the lift what we could carry in our laps and we would be responsible to carry out everything we carried in. I was impressed at what our friends brought! Well, we are about to celebrate yet another St. Patty’s Day on March 17 when supposedly there was much joyous noise made over someone who drove snakes from the streets; or whatever excuse there was for drinking beer again... Featured then is Atlantic Brewing Ellen’s Coffee (Milk) Stout in 22 oz bottles. Atlantic Brewing resides in Bar Harbor, Maine and boasts of at least 16 different year round and seasonal beer offerings, most of them based on European recipes. Starting in 1990, they began as Acadia Brewing, a one barrel local effort. This was quickly outgrown which lead to their purchase of a 19th century farmstead in 1998 where they remain today. You can read

ering, unlike other vanillabomb beers I’ve experienced. With a deep tan frothy head, the blackness of the glass full is inviting. Creamy and rich, the malty mouthfeel is complex and leaves you wondering where this beer is leading you... it leads you to take another sip, of course. If a stout-style beer which looks this muddy to non-connoisseur, could be described as clean, then this beer is very clean and wisely directed; hats off to Atlantic for their accomplishment. Although BeerAdvocate. com has rated this beer 88 of 100, while followers rated it as high as 4.92 out of 5.0 which points out that you should try this before it leaves for the season!

DEAR TIM: Our house has an unusual chimney made with irregular stones. The existing cap is in poor shape and I’m worried about damage. Each contractor I talk with has a different solution and none of them are even similar. What’s the best way to install a cap on a masonry chimney? How would you rebuild my chimney crown? --Theresa D., Boulder, Colo. DEAR THERESA: Be careful what you wish for! I love Colorado, and it wouldn’t take much to get me out there. But in my absence, I’ll bet there are great contractors in your city that know the correct way to install a masonry chimney cap. If not, I’m going to give you the specifications in this column so you can help educate one. There are best practices when it comes to chimney caps or crowns. Unfortunately, most roofers, masons and chimney sweeps are either unaware of them or don’t use them. I estimate that fewer than 1 in 10,000 chimneys have a cap or crown installed following the best practices. It’s vital that a chim-

ney have a proper cap or crown. Chimneys, when you look at them, are just miniature houses. They have four walls and are exposed to the weather just like a simple house. Look at houses that have stood the test of time and what you’ll discover is the roofs on these houses almost always have a good slope to them, they have generous overhangs, and the roofs are built to withstand years of the harshest weather. You can build chimney caps the same way, but most builders don’t. If I were transported to your home, here’s how I’d construct your new chimney cap. I’d gather the following materials: a sack of

pure Portland cement, rubberized asphalt membrane material, small pea-size gravel, coarse sand, assorted pieces of lumber for forms, 40-pound tin, 3/8inch primed and painted steel rebar, 3/8-inch open-cell foam, and special urethane caulk used on commercial building brick expansion joints. The chimney cap I’d build would be a reinforced, sloped concrete slab that would overhang the edges of your stone chimney by about 3 inches on all sides. It would have a special flashing under the poured concrete that would capture any water that might make it through the concrete cap. See builder on 26

mother’s chocolate chip cookies, instant oatmeal and my Jet-Boil stove to boil water quickly for morning coffee and tea. Our friends used large hockey bags filled with necessities and the most amazing treats. Friends from California brought oranges picked from their own trees! Chili, Lasagna, soup, bread, deviled eggs, gorp, maple sugar candies and more. We ate like Kings! Charlie and I took along our snowshoes and at

sunset we left the hut and trekked up to above the antenna farm to the rocky top of the Nose. The vista directly down the spine of the Green Mountains was gorgeous. The sun setting far away over Lake Champlain produced a red pink alpine glow that blanketed Mount Mansfield all around us. Back at the hut dinner was finishing up and people were busy at all different stages preparing for the next day and bed. But before stuffing the woodstove tight for the night

Charlie on top of Mount Mansfield’s Nose, the snowshoe was only a mile from the Stone Hut. and hitting the hay we all gathered around the table to play a game. I am not sure if the game has a real name, Telephone Pictionary? Nine people, each with nine sheets of paper began the game by writing a phrase or anything that came to mind on the top sheet. Then we passed the stack to the person to our right and read the written words and placed that paper at the bottom of the stack. Next we attempted to draw what we just read and then we passed the stack to our right again. Now we had to look at a drawing and write what we think it represents. We continued alternating guessing words and draw-

ing pictures all around the table until our first words returned. Together we reviewed the progression of the phrases and drawings with much amusement and laughter. We played the game two rounds each night. I confess the stone hut was a grand experience and the wonderful camaraderie we shared with old and new friends was certainly a swell time shared by all. But the skiing was the real reason we were gathered together. First runs down the freshly groomed Nosedive were delicious. No one on the trail in front or behind us, only a fresh carpet of corduroy snow stretched

out below for only us that slept in the Stone Hut. Stowe Mountain Resort is combination of historic rustic and new luxurious amenities and accommodations. The rustic Mansfield Lodge filled with locals and tele skiers still rests below the Front Four where cold draft beers and French fries can still be found. On the opposite side of the spectrum and just a short gondola ride over Route 108 from the summit gondola base is the new and still under construction lavish Stowe Mountain Lodge and Spruce Peak Village. At the base of Spruce Peak is the home of upscale dining and superior slope side accommodations. We covered a lot of terrain riding high speed lifts and skiing fast over the superbly groomed trails and bouncing down the soft moguls was a blast, a skier’s dream come true. We will long remember our stay in the Stone Hut and the fun we had experiencing what ski pioneers shared long ago on top of Vermont. Have Fun.

pieces of L-shaped metal that would rest against the clay flue liners that project up through the chimney cap. I’d solder these at the four corners and get them to fit tight against the clay liners. I’d also fabricate similar pieces of the tin that would overhang the outside edges of the chimney stone. These outer pieces would extend in toward the flue liner at least 4 inches and they’d hang down chimney at least 1.5 inches. I’d also put a bend on the lower exposed edge of the tin so it kicks out at a 45-degree angle away from the sides of the chimney. These four pieces of tin would also be soldered completely at the four corners. I’d prime this metal and paint it a color that matches as close as possible the stone. The rubberized mem-

brane would lap over the metal at the outer edges of the chimney, and the metal at the flue liners would rest on top of the membrane. Extra strips of the sticky membrane would then be placed over the tin that rests on the membrane at the flue liners to make a waterproof seal. I’d now use the lumber to create formwork that extends around the chimney top so the cap will extend out from the stone 3 inches. One inch in from the edge of the cap I’d place a 1/4-inch square piece of wood nailed and glued to the bottom of the form. This mission-critical piece of wood is going to create the all-important drip kerf on the underside of the poured cap. The thickness of the cap slab would be 2.5 inches at the outer edge and would get thicker as it approaches the clay flue liners. It would have a generous slope insuring that water flows to the edges of the "-- 1)"4&4 0' cap. 53&& 803, The foam would be used Now Is The Best Time To Clean Up Your Trees. to wrap around the flue liners. Water is a chimney’s archenemy. This is especially true if the chimney is located in a cold climate where water can freeze. Water that enters a chimney can freeze and break apart a chimney in just a few years. Water that hits the top of the chimney must be collected and redirected away from the chimney. The first step is to remove the old chimney cap and repair any of the stones at the top that might be loose. At this time it’s also a good idea to float a thin coat of cement stucco over the solid fill of the chimney ensuring it has a slight slope toward the edges of the chimney sides. This stucco is the foundation for the flashing under the cap. Using the 40-pound tincoated steel, I’d fabricate

No matter what the NH education cabal declares, these Smarter Balance Assessments have NOT been validated. Some Nashua middle school teachers are concerned these “tests” focus on psychological and sociological beliefs rather than measuring academic skills and knowledge. There is also the ongoing critical debate of student privacy and data mining concerns. To make things worse, parents have been unable to even look at these assessments. That’s right they are “secret”. Why the secrecy? Why should any child take a test which a parent cannot review? Does the NH DOE really think they can tell parents they are not allowed to exercise their parental rights and REFUSE THE TEST? Not in my world. We just need to say NO! If you fight for one thing, folks, you should fight for our children. You should ALWAYS fight for parental rights. Because Big

has been strangely silent while ISIS has been raping women and even little girls wholesale, and selling them as sex slaves. Is the silence of the radical feminists just political expediency or moral bankruptcy? Or both? Secretary of State John Kerry says that there is less violence than usual in the world right now. Meanwhile the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, says the opposite, that terrorism is more violent and dangerous than ever. Since Clapper is Director of National Intelligence, maybe Kerry should have the title Director of National Stupidity. We should never again put a first-term Senator in the White House. But, of the three Republican first-term Senators who are prospective candidates for the 2016 nomination for president, Marco Rubio is one of the very few politicians of either party to publicly admit that he was wrong on a major issue -- immigration. He may well be ready for the White House in 2020.

to Beijing called the relationship with China as an “integral strategic alliance.” Last year trade with China surpassed Argentina’s trade with the United States. More troubling is a recent space station deal between Beijing and Buenos Aires. The Argentine Congress has approved a satellite tracking facility in the Neuquen region of Patagonia which will serve as part of China’s planned 2020 Moon launch program. China is expected to invest $300 million for the

space tracking base. The United States which has increasingly taken Latin America for granted is now challenged by China’s soft power diplomacy through hard cash loans. Washington needs to take an overdue and proactive view towards this region too long seen as a political afterthought for the past generation. Revitalizing and modernizing John F. Kennedy’s long-forgotten “Alliance for Progress” initiative may be a wise step.

of enthusiasm. ... Other people see what they want to see and try to make it into something it’s not.” Indeed, race didn’t enter the picture until two error-riddled reports from the Press of Atlantic City appeared a week after the game occurred and snowballed into global tabloid hysteria. The paper extensively quoted an Atlantic City high school coach who wasn’t even there. The paper failed to mention that the vast majority of the Holy Spirit basketball team is black. The paper neglected to describe the full array

of costumes involved. Nor did it quote any of the kids involved in the skits. Anastasia, who was in attendance, noted: “I was there that night in Absecon. There were black kids along with white kids in that student section, yelling at Atlantic City’s players and cheering for Holy Spirit players. And for the record, there were times during that game when Atlantic City had more white players on the floor (two) than Holy Spirit.” Stephen Brown, a Holy Spirit alumnus who graduated last year and has

many friends at the school, told me: “It is a classic example of how the race card is so unfairly pulled, and in this case is being used to vilify innocent high school students.” Showing more maturity than the Chicken Little instigators in newsrooms around the world who defamed his fellow Spartans, Brown reflected: “This is not only a perfect example of poor journalism, but an example of how members of the biased media like to stir the racial pot.” What we have here is a textbook case of me-

dia-manufactured racism. Knee-jerk race-baiters who see bigotry at every turn are an embarrassment to the profession. Shame on the smear merchants and their enablers who go bananas over every last imagined slight and recklessly monkey around with students’ lives and reputations. The cage-rattlers don’t care about truth, honor or integrity. Lesson learned: It’s a social justice jungle out there, kids. Be prepared.

China’s aggressive trade and commercial policies have outdistanced the USA in much of the region, long presumed to be as “America’s backyard.” By 2009, People’s China surpassed the USA in trade with Brazil. Ray Ellis, a black Holy Spirit alumnus and former football player, had dressed up as the banana at a sports match three years ago.
