A Great Night’s Sleep Made In NH by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

A little bit off the beaten path of Rte 28 in Ossipee, NH, is an inconspicuous building where sweet dreams have been made for the last sixtythree years. The Sunset Mattress Company, started by William Campbell in 1953, is now in the steady hand of the third generation, Michael Savage, who is single-handedly producing anywhere from eight hundred to one thousand

mattresses a year, many of them custom made. William Campbell was originally from Boston where he learned the trade by sewing mattresses for the Red Cross in the 1930s and 40s. Also an avid gardener, Campbell would often get on a train to New Hampshire and scout for land with good soil to purchase. In the early 1950s, he bought the property where Sunset Mattress operates today. It was See sunset on 21

A Home Project

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

On Sunday night, my wife came out of the bathroom to tell me that the handle on the toliet had broken. I had no idea these things could break. Like the rising and setting of the sun, I believed its constant, uninterrupted motion would never have to be considered. The moment this news hit my ears a slight panic set in. Would I need to call a plumber? Possibly go to the bank to get a small loan to cover the expense? These are normal, conditioned thoughts that run through my head whenever I hear such news. It can be brought on by anything from a collapsed sewer line to a loose door handle. Once the reality of the gravity of the problem sunk in, I realized, as usual, that I may have overreacted in my mind and I go to look at the pending problem. Removing the toilet tank lid I peeked in. At first glance it seemed like it might be a bit complicated. There was all sorts of intricate moving parts that were in play. Each one serving some function needed to properly have the contents of the toilet make its way to places I would never want to visit. It seemed the handle was connected to a plastic stick which was connected to small chain which was connected to a rubber flap which forced upwards when the handle was pushed exposing a giant hole where water rushed down which made

the toilet flush. It was very Rube Goldberg like and I was fascinated. All I would need to do, I surmised after minutes of careful consideration watching with fascination the process over and over again (which consisted of using my hand as the handle and stick and pulling the chain upwards myself), was to somehow find and attach another handle and stick. I turned to my old friend the Internet who not only keeps me amused with mindless videos of insignificant things that have no bearing on my life but also, on rare occasions, helps me in situations such as this. I quickly learned that the piece I was looking for was called the toilet lever and that it could be purchased at the local hardware store. Not only that, the installation seemed easy and seamless and I should be able to complete it in one afternoon (if not slightly into the evening as well). Early the next morning I drove down to the store and, after ten minutes of searching, finally found the section where things like toilet levers waited for someone to purchase them. Not wanting to call attention to myself and ask for help in selecting the proper one and exposing my ineptness with such things, I used my best judgement, which with my level of expertise is merely a guess, and grabbed the one I thought might work and paid for it. I didn’t have time to attempt the installation until after work. No matter how hard I tried during the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about what the night would bring. Had I purchased the correct piece? (The package claimed it would fit any toilet‌I had fallen for that scam before.) Would it be a quick and easy in-

stallation as was claimed? Would I fail and need to go back to the store tomorrow and search for a human to help me, meanwhile my wife and I having to submit ourselves to another night of plunging warm hands into cold water to pull up on the flapper? These are the things than can strain an otherwise happy marriage. At lunchtime I watched an Internet video over and over on how to install the lever (okay, I watched a couple of cat videos as well). It seemed easy enough, but these guys were seasoned pros when it came to installing toilet levers. Finally it was time to face my demons. I arrived home and went right to work. There was no sense trying to find other things to occupy my time instead of getting to the project. After all, this was the toilet and there could be no procrastinating. I took a deep breath and removed the lever from its package. I bought it into the bathroom, stopping first to give my wife a kiss for good luck. I removed the tank lid, unscrewed the old handle, removed the flapper chain from the broken lever, and then made my first attempt to attach the new one. I am proud to report that the attachment of the toilet lever went flawlessly, every thing worked exactly as I had been shown. I could now add another project to my very short list of home projects I could successfully accomplish. Sometimes it feels good not to know how to do many handy things because when you finally do something handy, no matter how small and maybe not really even considered handy, it feels good. Let’s hope things around here stay quiet for at least the next twenty years.

Freedom Of The Press? To The Editor: Is freedom of the press in jeopardy under the Governor Hassan administration and law enforcement upside down? Does the Hassan Administration follow a partisan approach to enforcement of our election law based on the party affiliation of the law breaker and that of the whistle blower. The facts in this case are as follows: Mr. Hugo Palma Jr., a regional field director for the Berni Sanders presidential campaign, registered to vote in the Democrat primary on November 3, 2016 and also took a democrat ballot to vote that same day. Mr Palma filled out an affidavit under penalties of perjury that claimed 345 Cilley Road in Manchester as his domicile. That was the address of his office. It is against State law to claim one’s office as a domicile. The investigative reporter, James O’keefe, who uncovered and reported on this violation of New Hampshire law, was served with a subpoena from Dick Tracy, a lawyer working for, and paid by New Hampshire taxpayers in the office of the Attorney General’s office. Attorney Dick Tracy did not answer, when journalist O’keefe asked whether he had also

served a subpoena on Mr Hugo Palma who violated state law. If the policy of the Hassan administration is that whistle blowers are harassed while those who break the law are not investigated, we are going down a very dangerous slope, that will lead to one party rule and tyranny. David Scott Dover, NH.

Nuts! To The Editor: We’ve had an “Executive in Absentia” for the last 7 years. Mr. Obama has been on a perpetual, Presidential vacation running our federal government by executive action, and subsequently not abiding by the checks and balances between the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches set forth by our Founders in the US Constitution. Now, with the sudden death of Supreme Court Justice, Antonin Scalia, Mr. Obama suddenly wants to adhere to the Constitution and fulfill his Constitutional role by nominating a replacement for the deceased brilliant and Honorable Justice. We are in the heat of a domestic revolution with the up-coming political elections! The US Senate should be in no rush

to confirm Mr. Obama’s sudden nominee since whomever becomes the next Supreme Court Justice will have a significant impact on the High Court and the lives of US citizens for many years and countless generations. We Americans, through our representatives in the US Senate, are being asked by the Democrat Establishment in Washington, DC to surrender our voice in the selection process. In the words of Brig. Gen. Anthony McAuliffe, acting division commander of the 101st. Airborne Division troops defending Bastonge, Belgium, during World War II’s Battle of the Bulge, when given a surrender ultimatum by overwhelming numbers of German troops, I say, “Nuts!” to this hypocritical Democrat demand. I stand with Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and the other members of the US Senate who propose to give the people of New Hampshire and the people of America a proper and necessary voice in the vetting process of the next Supreme Court Justice through the election of our new President. ATTIC TREASURES AND 1963 SPORTS Attics can be treasure troves—especially attics of older relatives. A recent attic visit turned up some true treasures worth sharing. For some folks, “treasure” means gold and jewels. This column isn’t for those folks, but rather for those who appreciate historical treasures. The treasures I found included baseball, basketball, and hockey cards from 40-50 years ago. These are indeed jewels to a sports guy, even if they aren’t significant to incurious dullards who think history is boring. In looking through the baseball material I hoped to find a century-old Honus Wagner card which would be worth a million bucks. But instead I found the likes of Craig Swan, Mike Lum, and Kurt Bevacqua, all worth a good deal less than a Wagner. (But I’m willing to part with my newly discovered Kurt Bevacqua card, if anyone wants to make an offer. Bidding starts at $1000.) Likewise for the Joe Caldwell NBA basketball card, which indicated that Jumping Joe averaged over 16 points per game for the 1968 St. Louis Hawks. But a true treasure was an October 9, 1934 Boston Post newspaper. It only cost two cents, but that was a lot of money during the Depression, as my grandfather always pointed out. The main

Any offers for my classic Kurt Bevacqua? headline was DAFFY DEAN TIES UP SERIES; WINS 4-3. The lead story was about how the St. Louis Cardinals tied up the World Series at three games apiece with a win in Detroit against the Tigers. The Gas House Gang Cardinals would win that World Series with an 11-0 Game 7 triumph that very October 9. The sports headline overshadowed a lesser headline about Bruno Hauptman, who’d earlier been arrested and charged with the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby. Still another headline read NAB BLONDE AND MAN IN CAB HOLDUP. I found another old newspaper, one from my lifetime, a Nov. 23, 1963 Boston Record American—which cost eight cents. The headline brought back awful mem-

ories, memories that still haunt anyone around 60 years of age or older. PRESIDENT SLAIN BY ASSASSIN. Even 53 years later, the memory still sears, as the President of the United States belongs to all of us, regardless of party. Hopefully our country will never go through such a trauma again. After revisiting the thenfresh details of the president’s murder, I naturally turned to the sports pages. The main story was about Harvard-Yale football. The Boston Patriots were 5-5-1 in the AFL East—they’d finish 7-6-1 to make their only AFL title game, where they were crushed by San Diego Chargers. Post-Jihad Gesture Theater: Je Suis Sick of It While homicidal, suicidal and genocidal jihadists are busy plotting the next soft-target terror attacks on the West, docile Westby Michelle Malkin e r n e r s a r e Syndicated Columnist busy shedding cartoon tears and doodling broken hearts on social media. European artists rushed to fill Twitter and Instagram with images of Belgian comic book character Tintin weeping after vengeful Muslim terrorists left the Brussels airport and subway system buried in rubble and dead bodies. Residents of the besieged city -which recklessly opened its doors to mass Muslim immigration and criminalized the vocal dissent of those who’ve objected over past decade -- meekly protested the Quran-inspired violence by leaving pastel-colored chalk messages pleading for “peace no war.” Echoing the “Je Suis Charlie” and “Je Suis Paris” rallying cries that followed the January 2015 Charlie Hebdo jihad attack and the November 2015 jihad massacres in Paris and Saint-Denis, tens of thousands of people spread the “JeSuisBruxelles” message with their thoughts, prayers and memes. And, of course, there will be flags lowered and monuments lit up all over the world this week in the national colors of Belgium to show “solidarity” with Tuesday’s victims of The Perpetrators Whose Religion Shall Not Be Named. To borrow a useful phrase coined by British journalist James

Bartholomew last year, we have reached the oversaturation point of post-terrorism “virtue signaling:” Hashtags, avatars and animated GIFs ad nauseam. These are the easy advertisements and maudlin displays of one’s resolute opposition to an unidentified something that must be stopped somehow by unspoken means. Virtue signals are “camouflage,” Bartholomew explained. They are sincere-seeming shows of collective unity that disguise the millennial-age indulgence of publicly patting one’s own back for supposed moral courage. “No one actually has to do anything,” he opined. Virtue now “comes from mere words or even from silently held beliefs.” Pre-Twitter, outraged Americans all donned “Never forget” magnets and ribbons on our cars and lapels after 9/11. I was one of them. But after 15 years of hapless homeland security theater and bipartisan pandering to terror-coddling “Islamophobia” shriekers, I’m so, so sick of noble gesture paraphernalia. I’m sick of preening celebrities who tell me to “PrayForTheWorld” and celebrate diversity while indiscriminate floods of Muslim refugees across Europe and America corrode the pillars of peace and freedom. I’m sick of Silicon Valley moguls who pretend to champion free speech while muzzling the speech of those who use the Internet to criticize the very open door immigration policies that fertilized European and American soil for jihadists. I’m sick of all the same old emasculated politicians who declare that “justice will be served,” “this must end” and “we stand against terror,” while refusing to

A Citizen Legislature – We Need YOU!

The time is fast approaching when folks will need to sign up to serve in our local legislature. Sign up deadline is in June but everyone by Jane Cormier who has a dream to join in the poHooksett, NH. litical discussion here in Concord, should be making plans now – it is never too early to get informed and prepared. Having served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 2012 – 2014, I can attest to the fact that the job is absolutely worthy. I learned more than I could have ever imagined, on many different levels, in these two short years. And, I know for those citizens who are concerned about what is happening in Concord, serving in our legislature would be no less rewarding. Of course, we know New Hampshire has a citizen legislature and though many may spew that far too many bills pass through our legislature, I believe New Hampshire See malkin on 34 holds a very special place in the po-

litical process. In New Hampshire, ANY bill can be discussed on the floor in the House – any Representative call pull a bill off the Consent Calendar, and initiate a discussion on the floor of the New Hampshire House. This is pretty impressive stuff in my mind. As we look ahead to elections, I have always believed state politics can be the most powerful to the communities at large. If you have the time and ability, you should take up the call to serve in our citizen legislature. Especially if you believe your representative is not serving YOU! What better way to institute change than to empower local citizens to serve in their own legislative body? No paid politicians here. And, I can tell you – anyone who is willing to give it try, will not be sorry they threw their proverbial hat into the ring! If you are someone who has held a silent wish to serve, I say you need to get out there and sign up. Be part of the discussion. This is YOUR state and YOUR voice needs to be heard. We have 400 representatives in the NH House. See cormier on 35

Ice, Ice Lady Hassan’s Heroes on the Board of Education struck a blow for mediocrity last week, denying the application for by Ken Gorrell a K-4 charNorthfield, NH. ter school focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Two of the three votes against came from Hassan-appointees Bill Duncan and Emma Rous; the other came from Helen Honorow, a Lynch appointee. Democrats’ love of “choice” turns sours when it comes to public education, unions, and the best interests of children

– or more specifically, children of parents who can’t afford the education options exercised by wealthy men like Duncan. Until we elect a governor who will put the interests of children first, we’ll have to live with our bad decisions. It’s not like STEM education is all that important, right? According to Stay Work Play NH, a nonprofit dedicated to attracting and keeping young professionals in our state, high technology accounts for about 9% of the workforce, but those workers account for 30% of the gross income. While a career in a STEM field isn’t for everybody, encouraging our state’s children to explore options in STEM is good for them and everybody else who benefits from a strong economy.

Belgium Latest Target Of Jihadi Terror UNITED NATIONS—The tide

of hate has come to Brussels with three terrorist attacks in the Belgian capital. Islamic State (ISIL) jiby John J. Metzler hadi militants Syndicated Columnist carried out coordinated bombings on the Brussels Airport as well as the Metro killing at least 31 people and wounding hundreds of civilians. Coincidentally just days earlier, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry conceded the obvious, that the so-called Islamic State was committing genocide against minorities, especially Christians and Yazidis. French President Francois Hollande stated the challenge most succinctly; “Terrorism has hit Belgium, but Europe was targeted, and the whole world is concerned.” After the dust settled we were again reminded that the assault on yet anther European city formed part of the gruesome tableau of terror which has included Paris, London and Madrid. This is hardly the end but part of a continuing

thread of terrorist networks which runs throughout Europe and yes, into the USA as well. Some commentators have suggested a shrugging inevitability, a kind of “new normal” where such attacks are just part of the global landscape. “If its Tuesday this Must Be Belgium,” to cynically paraphrase a 1960’s comedy about Americans touring Europe in a swirl and arriving in little Belgium presumably on a Tuesday. Tuesday was the day of the attacks; the recent November outrages in Paris came on a Friday. But by succumbing to the philosophy of inevitability we are feeding the self-fulfilling prophesy and thus willing to contain, but not to seriously confront and defeat, the emerging threat. Why Belgium? I fondly recall visiting Brussels on a pretty regular basis back in the day. There’s NATO headquarters, the headquarters of the European Union (EU), not to mention some amazing historic cities, Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent, and naturally Brussels. The Kingdom of Belgium was always worth a visit. Centrally located and with open borders, Belgium offers easy access to the rest See Metzler on 34

Unfortunately, it’s not just Democrat appointees standing in the way of STEM. The field itself is under attack. The acronym has already mutated into STEAM with the addition of “Arts,” and this last bastion of logic and reason in education is

being assaulted by the woollyheaded hoards that overran liberal arts education, laying waste to what had once been serious fields of study. Many liberal arts majors and See gorell on 35

Black and White, Left and Right Much is made of the fact that liberals and conservatives see racial issues differently, which they do. But these differences have too often by Thomas Sowell been seen as Syndicated Columnist simply those on the right being racist and those on the left not. You can cherry-pick the evidence to reach that conclusion. But you can also cherry-pick the evidence to reach the opposite conclusion. During the heyday of the Progressive movement in the early 20th century, people on the left were in the forefront of those promoting doctrines of innate, genetic inferiority of not only blacks but also of people from Eastern Europe and Southern Europe, as compared to people from Western Europe. Liberals today tend to either glide over the undeniable racism of Progressive President Woodrow Wilson or else treat it as an anomaly of some sort. But racism on the left at that time was not an anomaly, either for President Wilson or for numerous other stalwarts of the Progressive movement. An influential 1916 best-seller, “The Passing of the Great Race” -- celebrating Nordic Europeans -- was written by Madison Grant, a staunch activist for Progressive causes such as endangered species, municipal reform, conservation and the creation of national parks. He was a member of an ex-

clusive social club founded by Republican Progressive Theodore Roosevelt, and Grant and Franklin D. Roosevelt became friends in the 1920s, addressing one another in letters as “My dear Frank” and “My dear Madison.” Grant’s book was translated into German, and Adolf Hitler called it his Bible. Progressives spearheaded the eugenics movement, dedicated to reducing the reproduction of supposedly “inferior” individuals and races. The eugenics movement spawned Planned Parenthood, among other groups. In academia, there were 376 courses devoted to eugenics in 1920. Progressive intellectuals who crusaded against the admission of immigrants from Eastern Europe and Southern Europe, branding them as genetically inferior, included many prominent academic scholars -- such as heads of such scholarly organizations as the American Economic Association and the American Sociological Association. Southern segregationists who railed against blacks were often also Progressives who railed against Wall Street. Back in those days, blacks voted for Republicans as automatically as they vote for Democrats today. Where the Democrats’ President Woodrow Wilson introduced racial segregation into those government agencies in Washington where it did not exist at the time, Republican President Calvin Coolidge’s wife invited the wives of black Congressmen to the White House. As late as 1957, civil rights legislation was sponsored in Congress by Republicans and opposed by Democrats. See Sowell on 38

They number around 1.88 million and that number nearly doubles when children of veterans are included (militarychild.org)! It is estimated that more than 900,000 children have had one or both parents deployed multiple times and more than 44,700 children live with a parent’s wound, injury, illness, or death. For most militaryconnected children, they have known the meaning of war and felt the impacts of it on their family (www. defense.gov). Although young, these brave sons and daughters

April Is Month Of The Military Child! support their military parents and live with constant challenges resulting from frequent moves, parental deployments, and life transitions that include parent/family reintegration and living with profoundly changed parents. In their own way, militaryconnected children serve alongside their military parents. A lot of military children take these changes in stride and some even thrive on them, but it is hard - kids have to rebuild their world every time and find their place in it. As of December 2014, NH had 4005 military kids aged 18 and under, spread across all 10 counties and serving in all branches of the service (https://extension.unh.edu/resources/ files/Resource005472_ Rep7644.pdf). An 1885 Landslide

“You sow your oats... while I stitch your britchez

Homestead Place, Alton, NH

(603) 875-5329

by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

Snow in large amounts sliding down the side of a mountain is called an avalanche. Earth, usually wet earth, commonly called mud, sliding down a mountain is called a landslide. Anyone who is at all knowledgeable about Crawford Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire has doubtless heard the story of the tragic and deadly landslide at that locality in August of 1826 involving the Willey family. This account, though, is about another devastating landslide in another area of the White Mountains which probably fewer Granite State residents know about. Early Springtime in New England is also called mud season. The fact is, however, that mud can, and sometimes is, produced during other seasons of the year when large amounts of rain fall and mix with previously dry earth , a process that is apt to take place quickly. It happened quickly and with devastating results on the morning of July 10, 1885 near Jefferson, New Hampshire on the north side of Cherry Mountain, also known as Mount Martha. The landslide happened on a Friday morning at 6:00 o’clock when farmers in the valley below the mountains had already begun their work day. The greatest loss of property was that belonging to Oscar Stan-

Turn Your Cluttered Closets Into Cash! Owls Head on Cherry Mountain (looking towards the Presidential Range). ley who operated a farm in the meadows beneath Cherry Mountain. Five weeks prior to the landslide, Mr. Stanley had lost his house to a fire and with the help of Moses and Cliff McDonald of Whitefield was in the process of building a new one, starting with the “ L section, probably the custom in that era. His wife and children were staying with her father who lived half a mile away while Stanley and a hired man, 24 year old Don Walker, were sleeping in the barn. The barn was an impressive structure, 40 feet wide and 75 feet long, and was home to a horse, four cows, a calf, three swine, and an undetermined number of poultry. Some furniture that was saved from the house when it burnt was stored in the barn. A heavy rain shower had poured onto the mountain that morning, and one witness reported seeing two heavy cloud formations come from different directions and join at the top of a prominence on Cherry Moun-

tain called Owl’s Head because of its peculiar shape. Many believed that the abundance of rain loosened the earth and ledge on the side of Owl’s Head and started the landslide; others felt that a bolt of lightning had dislodged a huge hunk of ledge which initiated the slide. Whatever the cause, an estimated million tons of mud and boulders rolled down the mountain side taking with it numerous trees including â€œâ€Śno less than 25 acres of thick, standing timber.â€? The slide travelled for two miles and the Stanley farm was in its path. Oscar Stanley and the two McDonalds were working in the new house and the hired man, Walker, was milking in the barn when they heard a large noise which, at first was mistaken for thunder or a train on the railroad tracks. Oscar, however, ran to the door and saw the mass of dirt coming down the mountain and yelled to his companions and they all See smith on 33

spend the winter months in an area that stretches from central Mexico to northern South America. Around the month of May, these beautiful songbirds take up spring/summer residence in the northeastern United States and southern Canada. Males arrive first to select an appropriate nesting territory and begin to sing their unmistakable “screep” note which sounds like sneakers on a freshly waxed gymnasium floor. After the males establish a territory, the females will arrive and choose amongst the prospective males for the best mate. Favorite habitats for rosebreasted grosbeaks are deciduous forests and woodland edges. Typical backyards divided by trees and shrubs are natural attractants for these birds to lay their eggs in. In spring, the male rose-breasted grosbeak’s breeding plumage is striking. The head and back are black, the belly and rump are white and the upper breast has a beautiful triangular patch of bright red, the “bleeding heart.” Females resemble enlarged sparrows with a broad white eyebrow and heavily streaked breast. These robin-sized songbirds show white flashes in the wings as they fly, but the most positive identification of this species is the large, conical beak. Rose breasted grosbeaks search for food in the same woodland areas they inhabit. The trademark beak allows them to consume a large variety of seeds, fruits and insects. A typical diet will include elm seeds, hickory blossoms and white ash buds. Gypsy moths and tent caterpillars are

regular table provisions for this gardener’s friend. For backyard birders, it is especially delightful that these songbirds have an affinity for sunflower seeds. The white safflower seed with its high oil fat content is also relished by grosbeaks. As summer approaches, the large flocks of rosebreasted grosbeaks break off into pairs with predetermined breeding territories to defend against their common enemy, the brown-headed cowbirds. Female cowbirds lay their eggs in grosbeak nests and leave the parental duties to the surrogate females. It is not uncommon for cowbirds to toss the grosbeak eggs to the ground to make room for their larger eggs instead. These “bleeding hearts” are cousins to the brilliantly plumaged evening grosbeaks from Canada. It is a blessed backyard indeed to have both species simultaneously spend an afternoon as guests for a most colorful display. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. It’s A Fiscal and Moral Conflict If you are a supporter of controlling the spending of your local property tax dollars; using the Consumer by Niel Young Price InAdvocates Columnist dex – Urban and, as a bonus; the local school boards and councils (municipal) then the peoples TAX CAP is an option. One of my radio guest this Saturday 1350AM & wezs. com live stream, is Laconia Mayor Ed Engler. BOSTON GLOBE 11/20/2005: From Portsmouth to Manchester, a quiet tax rebellion took place at the ballot box earlier this month, as voters across New Hampshire swept fiscal conservatives into office and imposed strict spending limits on their local leaders. Laconia went so far as to adopt a tax cap — rare in New Hampshire. “Voters are concerned about property taxes and are willing to vote for people and structures that will keep a lid on spending, says Charlie Arlinghaus, president of the Josiah Bartlett Center, a conservative Granite State think tank. “The question is: Will policymakers address those who have voiced spending concerns or reject them as a bunch of cranks? “In a race watched closely throughout the state, Laconia community activist Niel Young, a conservative commentator and former state representative, successfully petitioned for a city charter amendment that establishes a tax cap. Laconia, on Lake Winnipesaukee, is the third New Hampshire city to adopt such a cap; Nashua and Franklin have had similar measures in place for years. “The Laconia tax cap, passed by a vote of 1,842 to 1,708, forces the council to craft city budgets by taking

the prior year’s spending plan, accounting for inflation by adjusting by the consumer price index, and then adding to that figure any revenue derived from new development. “There’s a wave sweeping across this state, said Young. “Taxpayers are fed up with the way the mayors and councils spend. They like to forget it is taxpayer money, our money, they’re spending. It’s appalling. ******** Are we more concerned about the local ski team (few participants) or about police protection, doing what can be done to keep our citizens safe; and alive?? Washington spends TRILLIONS; for what? ******** A Bernie bumper sticker seen last week: “Don’t like socialism – build your own road. Please do not be so silly. Leave it to the “socialist liberal kick you in the teeth anti-America prowelfare, redistribution of wealth OPM (other people’s money), pro-abortion at any time, types who dislike our U.S. Constitution, NO respect for our military who has protected all Americans and foreign freedom seeking folks who owe us, at minimum, their respect to America’s greatest heroes! According to Daily Sanity: Obama Cabinet Member Jae Johnson: Illegals Are “In Effect Citizens. Who told this guy to make that statement? In a speech before Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, he told students that illegal aliens have essentially “in effect become Americans, “they are not going away, and that he hates having to deport them. ******** Daily Sanity: “We already told you about Pablo Antonio Serrano-Vitorino, an illegal alien who killed 5 people in cold blood. He was arrested multiple times on crimes that should have gotten him deported, but Jeh Johnson’s DHS chose not to. When he was ar-

rested in 2014 on a DUI, Jeh Johnson did nothing. When he was arrested in 2015 on domestic assault charges, Jeh Johnson did nothing. Then he went on to murder five people. Then there’s illegal alien Eswin Mejia who got behind the wheel drunk and killed an innocent, 20-year old woman. Jeh Johnson’s Homeland Security refused to deport him because at the time, his victim was still clinging to life so it technically wasn’t manslaughter. WASHINGTON EXAMINER: In a brief Easter weekend radio address, President Obama vowed to decimate the self-proclaimed Islamic State, but he said the United States will do so by offering an example of freedom, tolerance and open society. “Our openness to refugees fleeing ISIL’s violence; our determination to win the battle against ISIL’s hateful and violent propaganda — a distorted view of Islam that aims to radicalize young Muslims to their cause, are paramount in the fight, Obama told Americans during his weekly radio address. Admitting entry to Syrian and Iraqi refugees has become a divisive issue in the U.S. as well as Europe, but Obama made clear he has no plan to back off his promise to admit 100,000 to the U.S. this year.

Beer For History Series With Unique Beers And Live Music - Live music and unique beer found nowhere else in New England—if not the world— will highlight the American Independence Museum’s inaugural “Beer for History” series, which kicks off on May 19 in Exeter, NH. Neighborhood Beer Co., D.L. Geary Brewing Company and 7th Settlement will headline Beer for History. According to Museum Operation Manager Rob Levey, each brewer has agreed “to do something special” for the series, which continues on June 23 with a Tavern Night theme and October 20 with a Fall Harvest theme. The opening event in May will help celebrate the Museum’s 2016 season, which begins on May 3. “Each brewer is going to go back into history and brew something special for us based on recipes that in some cases could be more than 400 years old,” Levey said. “If you like craft brews, then Beer for History is going to be your ticket of choice this year.” The brewers are also thrilled at the innovative Beer for History series, as Neighborhood Beer Co.’s Mike O’Donnell added, “We are Exeter’s only brewer and we are very excited to be part of this series.” Noting they are based in EXETER

Portland, Maine, Geary’s Rick St. Peter said he believes “a love of history and great beer go hand in hand with one another.” “This is going to be a unique series of beer events,” he said. Nate Sephton, brewer at 7th Settlement in Dover and resident of Exeter for the past 13 years, said he eagerly anticipates the series, which he said helps celebrate “the great history of the town and Seacoast area.” In addition to beer, the series will feature live music and food prepared by local businesses, including 3 Brothers Marketplace in Exeter. Tickets for each event in the series will be $30 and include food, samplings of

beer, games for kids, and more. Members of the Museum may purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $25. Proceeds from Beer for History will support the Museum’s efforts to preserve its collection, including an original copy of the Declaration of Independence, handwritten letters by George Washington and other rare artifacts. Proceeds will also support the Museum’s educational programs, which serve more than 1,600 children annually from across the state. To buy tickets for an individual event or for the entire series at a discounted rate, visit www. independencemuseum. org.

KENNELL

Healthy Tip From Dr. Fink:

Alan F. Kennell, DDS, MS

Pain & Inflammation

by Dr. Charles Fink

Fink Chiropractic & Natural Health Improvement Center

Before you take aspirin, Ibuprofen (NSAIDS) or acetaminophen for pain, consider this, each of those medications has been associated with sideeffects, such as liver toxicity or ulcers. Many people seek out nutritional alternatives, but are confused as to what to take. My advice is to seek out the advice of a practitioner who has researched those alternatives and to get to the cause of the inflammation, turning it off. Often our diets are a contributing factor to an inflammatory state. Foods that cause inflammation and lead to pain include refined sugar, refined grains and related flour products (bread, pasta, bagels, etc.) and refined oils to name a few. These foods often make up 80% of an average diet which can cause a flood of joint and muscle pain. It’s at this point that many people start taking NSAIDSs and Tylenol, all the while still eating their inflammatory diet of processed

foods. Don’t assume its arthritis; it probably has more to do with some of the food choices you are making. You cannot turn off dietdriven pain and inflammation by taking medications or nutritional supplements. They may mask the pain and the supplements will help support systems that are struggling because of the poor diet, but the reality is inflammation is serious and a precursor to more serious conditions. Therefore it is important to make dietary changes and eat an anti-inflammatory, healthy diet. The anti-inflammatory diet consists of vegetables, fruit, raw nuts, lean meats, fish & eggs. A little dark chocolate & red wine in moderate amounts as well. The best oils/fats include olive oil, coconut, avocado, nut oils & butter. Cut the grains out of your diet and you may notice a difference in as soon as a day. A supplement that may be beneficial is EPA-DHA (fish oil) capsules containing omega-3 fatty acids which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Keep in mind that not all fish oil products are good ones. It is best to follow the advice of someone who has researched the supplements and is fairly certain it is a quality product. Certain spices

such as ginger, turmeric, rosemary, oregano, garlic & coriander are beneficial as well and known to reduce pain and inflammation. If you are interested in clearing out some of the toxins and getting onto a better eating plan I can make some simple suggestions. We offer a 3 week purification diet designed to clean out your system and help get you started on the road to better health, or you may choose to do a 10 day plan. As a Chiropractor for 30 years I have helped many people with a variety of complaints. Neck, backs, hips, sciatic pain just to name a few. produced by our bodies, that is as vilified? We have come to associate the word cholesterol with evil and something to be avoided like the plague. This is really a misunderstanding. Yes, obviously extremely high levels of cholesterol are bad for your health and an obvious concern. Yet, we also need to start remembering that our body is intelligent and our own body actually produces cholesterol for many important purposes. It plays an important role as a structural component of cells (it is in fact found in every cell), it is a player in digestion, hormone production, and vitamin D synthesis. You have to have cholesterol. Further, having a level of cholesterol that is too low has been connected to an increased morbidity. The reason cholesterol has fear attached to it, is when too high, it has been connected to all kinds of health issues. Most people by now are clear on the idea that the total level of cholesterol is not as important a health indicator as the ratio of kinds of cholesterol. Specifically, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) the “good” type of cholesterol and the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) the “bad” type of cholesterol. HDL has been associated with reduced risk of heart disease. It acts as a scavenger in the bloodstream and removes LDL. It also acts as a repair man for the inner wall of blood vessels, which helps prevent atherosclerosis. LDL on the other hand, deposits itself on blood vessel walls, and over time as cells, debris, and cholesterol stick on the cell wall, deposits of plaque are formed. You can see why this nasty little guy is dubbed the “bad” kind. At this point LDL is bad, but it only gets worse if it becomes oxidized. Oxidized LDL is formed when LDL particles react with free radicals. Oxidized LDL is really much more

dangerous because it can produce tissue damage, inflammation in arteries, increase atherosclerosis, and increase your risk for stroke or heart attack. The obvious answer to these concerns is lowering your cholesterol, but even if you lower your total levels of cholesterol you could potentially still have too high of a ratio of LDL, which as stated previously could become even more dangerous if oxidized. It is my opinion that a good option is to focus on decreasing the risk of oxidizing whatever LDL cholesterol you may have, as soon as possible. Here’s some ideas of how: 1) Reduce your consumption of processed grains, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup. If you eat too much of these foods, your liver (which produces cholesterol) will ultimately process these fast burning sugars (if there is excess) as more LDL. As far back as 2008 research also began to make a connection to high sugar consumption to not just higher levels of LDL but to lower levels of HDL, which remember helps remove LDL. 2) Avoid increasing free radicals in your body, which oxidize the LDL. Do this by avoiding foods fried in vegetable oil (consider coconut oil instead), fried foods in general, trans fats, and smoking. 3) Increase your fruit and vegetable intake and consider drinking green tea. These are thought to decrease free radicals and inflammation, thus preventing oxidation of LDL and blood vessel damge. 4) If you have diabetes or metabolic syndrome, get them under control by exercising and losing weight. 5) I’ll mention exercising again, as 30-60 minutes daily has been connected to increasing the good cholesterol HDL. Ultimately, if you should make these changes as See moneysmith on 20

Simple Solutions to Keep Aging Skin Healthy by Jennifer Harvey RN BSN CDP Clinical Director - Live Free Home Health Care

NEW HAMPTON While many Americans spend hundreds of dollars a year on products that claim to “defy age,” the simple truth is that the skin does change with age, and these age-related changes leave older adults at an increased risk for certain skin issues. While we may not be able to completely stave off wrinkles, there are some simple solutions that can help older adults overcome common agerelated skin problems and maintain healthy skin. Dryness Dry, flaky skin affects 75% of people over the age of 65, according to Medscape. Lower legs, elbows, and forearms tend to be especially susceptible to dryness and irritating itchiness. This occurs because as a person ages, the number of sweat and oil glands in his or her body decreases, contrib-

uting to dry skin. Some simple solutions to help combat dryness and itching in aging skin include: •Taking warm rather than hot baths or showers and bathing less often. •Using only mild soaps and shampoos. Some people may require a special soap or shampoo such as Nizoral which is made for special skin conditions. •Moisturizing often, especially after a bath. •Avoiding perfumes, which may irritate the skin. •Drinking plenty of fluids to rehydrate the skin. •Using a humidifier in the winter or in dry climates. •Avoiding overexposure to the sun and using sunblock. Bruising Thinning skin and weakened blood vessels cause older adults to be more susceptible to bruising, even following minor bumps and scrapes. Some

A Healing Skill

simple solutions to help prevent bruising or to help existing bruises heal include: •Applying a cold compress to the bruise for about 20 minutes to reduce blood flow to the area and decrease inflammation. •Elevating a bruised foot or leg. •Getting plenty of vitamin C. Vitamin C plays an important role in the

production of collagen, which can protect against bruising. •Wearing long sleeves and long pants when doing tasks that may injure the skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, if a bruise is large and painful or if bruises appear for no reason, especially if new medication is being taken or bleeding in other areas is noticed, such as on the nose and

gums, call a physician. Pressure Sores Pressure sores — also called bed sores or pressure ulcers — are skin injuries that result from prolonged pressure against the skin that inhibits an adequate supply of blood to the skin. Pressure sores can develop quickly and are often difficult to treat; however, there are strategies to help prevent them, See skin on 20

This is followed by two layers of 100 percent cotton felt padding which are placed on both sides of the mattress. “I don’t know of anyone in New England that hand makes mattresses this way, said Michael. “We never use foam in our inner springs, See sunset on 23

Using the Tape Edge Machine that was purchased by his grandfather, William Campbell, when he started the Sunset Mattress Factory in 1953, Michael Savage secures the ticking upon the mattress frame. said Michael. “The cotton padding also has the natural agent of Boric Acid which I feel is the best thing on the market for flame retardance. The next step is in cutting of the 100 percent cotton ticking. “It really allows the mattress to breath. After the ticking is placed and secured by the Tape Edge machine, the mattress is hand tufted. Placing dozen of buttons across both sides of the mattress a cord is inserted with needle and then into a lock nut at the end of each button on each side of the mattress, ensuring the shape of the mattress for years to come. “I could take a cover off any mattress I’ve made twenty years from now and the felt would be exactly where I put it originally, said Michael. Besides the standard twin, full and queen size mattresses, Michael does a great deal of custom sizes for fits like cut corners for RVs and four post beds and mattresses to fit in the bow of a boat.

The list goes on. And all the mattresses have handles. “So far there hasn’t been a size or shape I haven’t been able to make, said Michael. Sunset Mattresses can usually have a mattress ready within one week of ordering. Michael also makes the box springs, which sell for the same price as the mattress, but he emphasizes you don’t have to buy one with the mattress. “A box spring will last longer than a mattress, said Michael. “If it is firm and flat, no need to buy a new one. If it has any kind of dip or sag, it doesn’t matter what mattress you buy, it will follow that sag. Most of Sunset Mattresses’ sales come from word of mouth and there are customers from all over the Northeast. You can find out more on prices and testimonials on the Sunset Mattress website www.sunsetmattressfactory.com. They are located at 85 Country Farm Road in Ossipee. 603-539-6256.

Spalidays Event Another Great Success! In early December the Cascade Spa in Meredith hosted their annual Spalidays event at Church Landing, drawing hundreds of attendees for an upscale two-day celebration focused on the benefits of spa services on personal health and well-being. Each December Spalidays guests are treated to mini spa services, great gifts and discounts, and they have the opportunity to chat with exclusive product vendors from around the world – all while giving back to their community. This past Spalidays event raised a very impressive $3,500.00 to benefit the Care Management program at LRGHealthcare. Each of the past four years Martha Zyla, Director of the Cascade Spa, selected a specific health-related focus and designation for funds raised from Spalidays. Looking back the event has highlighted the importance of screenings for early detection of breast cancer, skin cancer, and 2014 proceeds were designated to benefit patients struggling with a mental health diagnosis. “Staff members at the Cascade Spa and Mill Falls at the Lake are very proud to support LRGHealthcare once again,” explains Zyla. “Proceeds raised from this past December’s Spalidays event will benefit the Care Management program at LRGHealthcare, offering a

helping hand to our friends and neighbors during a time of need.” “We are very grateful to Martha Zyla and everyone at the Cascade Spa and Mill Falls, the vendors, local businesses and guests who helped to make the recent Spalidays event such a successful event,” states LRGHealthcare Director of Care Coordination Karen Davis. “The Care Management team’s primary goal for this donation is to assist those patients who are facing not only significant health issues, but also have enormous financial challenges. Some patients will receive medications that they otherwise would not be able to pay for; others may be given necessary medical supplies such as diabetes testing kits, breathing treatment equipment, or wound care supplies. In some cases patients will receive dental care assistance. This gift will benefit so many patients in so many ways and is a wonderful way to give back to our community” adds Davis. Don’t Dumb Down Deer They’re Smarter Than You Think! (BPT) - With 2015 breaking records as the warmest year ever in the U.S., you'll soon be seeing an unhappy side-effect of the mild weather; more deer will be browsing your backyard when the weather gets warm. Most of us have seen more acorns, a bumper crop in fact, that provided deer with an easily accessible, plentiful food source which helped them get through winter in good shape. They're healthy and will be ready to birth plenty of fawns come spring. This season we'll see deer populations rise in suburbia across the country. Don't discount deer's intelligence, they're smarter than you think; they actually possess a memory of negative experiences, learn from them and adapt their habits accordingly. Deer know they're greatly exposed to danger due to hunters and predators in woodlands and have moved right to the edge of woodlands, in close proximity to suburban neighborhoods, where they've learned they're safe. They're also smart enough to know danger is not present or

even threatening in suburbia and they will remember your bountiful backyard food sources, too. Once in your yard, you can count on deer damage to your trees, shrubs, gardens and landscapes that you've invested much time, money and effort in. The damage to residential landscapes, crops and timber from deer foraging ranges around $1 billion annually. With a single deer capable of eating a ton and a half of vegetation per year, just one or two deer can cause significant damage. Deer don't have to devastate your yard this spring and summer, according to Scott C. Williams with the Department of Forestry and Horticulture at The Connecticut Agricultural

Experiment Station. "You can definitely use deer's intelligence against them to trick them right out of your yard. Just as they learn where to find safe, reliable food sources, you can "train" deer to avoid any specific area." Negative conditioning works well to deter deer from your yard, but it's important to choose a strategy that outsmarts them continuously. Scare tactics such as dogs barking, canned noise and scarecrows have limited effects, as deer quickly learn there's no real harm associated with these "threats." Fences also have limitations; deer can easily jump over any fence lower than 8 feet and few neighborhoods will approve a fence of that See deer on 29

DEAR TIM: I want to remodel our dingy bath, but I need to get a handle on what the project will cost before I start. My wife doesn’t want me to tackle the job myself, even though we have a second bathroom we can use during the project. What’s the best way to determine a price if I do the work myself? What’s the best way to get the firm price if I have to hire a pro? --Paul D., Fairfax, Va. DEAR PAUL: I’ll bet you and your wife are excited about your upcoming bath remodel. My customers always loved seeing their old bathrooms transformed into a personal oasis in just a matter of a week or two. I hope you can do your job that fast to keep family stress to a minimum. You’re approaching the job the right way by not starting until you know the exact price. The good news is that it’s not as hard as you might think to compute the price, especially if you’re not paying for any labor. If you do win your wife’s confidence and she gives you the green light to do the job yourself, then you just need to create a detailed material list. To do this, all you need to do is stop and break

"Deer will remember the unpleasant smell and taste of your backyard's food source and they'll pass by your yard rather than eat something they've already been conditioned to learn will be distasteful." Bobbex Deer Repellent is such a product that combines scent and taste deterrents. Testing by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station proved Bobbex is more effective than nine other commercial repellents (including coyote urine), scoring a 93 percent in protection, second only to a fence at 100 percent. The all-natural repellent blends six scents, including rotten eggs, garlic, fish, clove oil and vinegar (among other things) to mimic predator scents, classifying it as an effective fear repellent. It also tastes terrible to deer, but is actually good for plants because it contains ele-

ments high in nitrogen and phosphorus. The product dries clear, is harmless to humans and pets, won't burn plants and its odor, after 24 hours, is undetectable to humans. You can easily apply Bobbex with a simple trigger or pump spray, according to label directions, and school deer to pass you by. Best practice is to use the product throughout the entire year, since deer and their ability to devastate your yard, are never out of season. Continued use will

ensure protection of plants and landscapes and constantly reinforce to the deer that your backyard doesn't offer any good, tasty sustenance. Visit www.bobbex. com to learn more. Although deer are smart enough to spot easy food sources, it is possible to humanely and effectively keep them out of your backyard all year. It's a simple matter of using their smarts to outsmart them and convince them they're better off looking elsewhere for food.

to the late president. The NFL would go ahead and play that Sunday anyway, with players who didn’t care performing before half-empty stadiums with fans who really didn’t much care either, what with the president’s death. NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle would later say that going ahead with football that weekend was the worst mistake he ever made. The NFL standings showed the Giants and Bears leading their respective divisions. They’d later meet in the NFL title game in Chicago, where quarterback Y.A. Tittle’s New Yorkers would lose 14-10. I also checked the other standings and found the Boston Celtics were 12-1 and atop the four-team Eastern Division of the nine-team NBA. The Boston Bruins were 3-10-2 and in last place in the six-team NHL. The top movie playing was “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” with a true all-star cast, led by

Spencer Tracy. Eventually I put the old newspapers away. While history is fascinating, one can’t live in the past. We also need to look forward. But I couldn’t help but wonder if this very Weirs Times might someday be found in a Granite State attic. Will whoever finds it marvel at how little it cost? (Even less than the 1934 Post or the 1963 Record American—or the six bucks I recently paid for the Sunday New York Times.) Whoever finds this paper years from now will know how things worked out under President Trump. Or will it be President Hillary? Or President ???? And maybe they’ll find some baseball cards as well. Kurt Bevacqua should be worth a million bucks by then!

Front page of the November 23, 1963 newspaper recently found ny Mike Moffett in his attic.

Sports Quiz What was the nickname for the NHL team that played in Cleveland during the mid-seventies? (Answer follows)

Born Today ... That is to say, sports standouts born on March 31 include Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight champion (1878). Sportsquote “Baseball is like a poker game. Nobody wants to quit when he’s losing; nobody wants you to quit when you’re ahead.” – Jackie Robinson Sportsquiz Answer The Barons Michael Moffett is a Professor of Sports Management at Plymouth State University and at NHTIConcord. He recently coauthored the criticallyacclaimed and awardwinning “FAHIM SPEAKS: A Warrior-Actor’s Odyssey from Afghanistan to Hollywood and Back” (with the Marines)—which is available through Amazon. com. ran and barely escaped being swept away by the landslide. Oscar afterwards said “My barn and house were struck and smashed like eggshells. Don Walker was buried in what had been the barn and was severely wounded , but was still alive when he was pulled out of the ruins. He died of his wounds four days later. The horse and one cow minus its horns, though buried in the mud, survived the ordeal though the rest of the farm animals perished. Besides his buildings Mr. Stanley lost 40 acres of his best farmland including his crops of potatoes, oats, wheat, and a large

garden. Writing two days after the tragedy a reporter for The Monitor said “ Today over 5,000 people have visited the scene of the disaster, coming by train, by team, and on foot, from miles around. A special train of 12 cars arrived from Groveton‌â€?. He predicted that visitors would soon be rushing into Jefferson by the thousands and encouraged them to do so, citing the attractiveness of the scenery despite the destruction left by the slide. The reporter also had some good words for the Whitefield and Jefferson Railroad and the Waumbek Hotel , recom-

mending the meals served there and its stable run by J.S. Huntress. Probably because of the advent of the automobile the railroad line was discontinued and the Waumbek Hotel with its good view of Cherry Mountain (Mount Martha) four miles away was destroyed by fire on May 9, 1928, but the beauty of the landscape (not the landslide) remains. What exactly triggered this massive landslide remains a mystery, but it appears that the huge amount of rain falling in a short period of time was at least a contributing factor. However, one might want to keep

Gilford Mobil Mart

in mind that it has been suggested in these more “ modern times that the Cherry Mountain Road is considered perhaps the best spot in the State of New Hampshire for signs of the elusive sasquatch, otherwise known as “Bigfoot. Do you suppose that something other than rain or lightning could have moved the boulder or section of ledge that was the trigger of that massive landslide? sophisticated terror web extends to the recent Paris attacks as well as serving as a recruiting base for foreign fighters for Syria’s civil war. Tiny Belgium hosts one of the highest per capita contributors of jihadi fighters to Syrian terrorist groups and thus highlighting the globalization of terrorism. of the population which is not well integrated, some of which is radicalized and “off the grid,” and marginalized in an increasingly multicultural society. Back to the important genocide declaration by the State Department. Secretary of State John Kerry at long last admitted the obvious; that the gruesome and targeted killings of Iraqi and Syrian Christians, the rape and enslavement of the Yazidi women, and the ongoing campaign by Islamic State is responsible for committing genocide. Broadly defined, genocide refers to the specific State targeting of racial, ethnic or religious groups for liquidation. For the past few years we wept while seeing ancient Christian communities in Iraq and Syria subjected to wanton killings and torture. The religious segregation of Christians as “apostates” by the ghoulish guardians of Islamic State in Mosul Iraq, the desecration of churches and smashing of Syria’s rich religious mosaic, and the trashing of cultural artifacts dating from ancient times are part of this sordid legacy in the contemporary Middle East. In the depths of the security bureaucracy there’s probably someone saying, “we can keep Islamic State terrorism to an acceptable level of violence.” But now it’s not only Brussels for which we pray for and stand in solidarity with. In the last few weeks, Belgium stands with Ivory Coast and Turkey as among the targets of terrorists. The list is growing but the western world seems unwilling to accept the long term threat as thousands of foreign fighters who fought in Syria have returned to threaten Europe. The thread of terror which runs through Beirut, Baghdad, Jerusalem, New York, London, recently added new cities to the litany: Paris, Brussels, and ??? John J. take even the smallest baby steps to register and track Muslim refugees already here, stop new ones from coming in and tying up our overwhelmed immigration bureaucracy, and drain the jihad swamps inside our own borders. We’ve had enough piles of memorial flowers. We’ve heard enough hollow lip service paid to resolve. Where is the world’s active resistance to the sharia-imposing soldiers of Allah? We need Tintin to wipe his nose, man up and remember Belgium’s once proud history. When German invaders attempted what they thought would be an easy romp through the tiny neutral country in 1914 on their way to Paris, resistance fighters who were outnumbered 14 to 1 took a brave stand in defense of their sovereignty. Bracing for an onslaught, King Albert addressed his people: “One single vision fills all minds: that of our independence endangered. One single duty imposes itself upon our wills: the duty of stubborn resistance. In these solemn circumstances two virtues are indispensable: a calm but unshaken courage, and the close union of all Belgians. ... It is the moment for action. ... [A] country which is defending itself conquers the respect of all; such a country does not perish!” How far the West has fallen. Farewell, steeled wills. You’ve been replaced by an army of sad-faced emojis. #WesternCivilizationRIP Michelle Malkin is author of the new book “Who Built That: Awe-Inspiring Stories of American Tinkerpreneurs.” Her email address is malkinblog@ gmail.com.

courses are beyond parody. What job options open to you with your BA in Puppetry or one of the various fill-in-thedisadvantaged-group Studies majors? What marketable skills does one gain sitting through “The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender, and Media,” (Skidmore) or “Gaga for Lady Gaga: Sex, Gender, and Identity” (UVA)? How do you explain to your parents that you were forced to endure – and they paid for – “Aesthetics in Context: The Artistic Impulse,” a core course at Roger Williams University that uses as a text book a novel graphically depicting the professor’s own “unusual” sexual encounters? (It will shock no one to learn that this tenured professor uses class time “disparaging capitalism and free enterprise.”) STEM majors used to be immune from such course offerings, or could at least pick and choose their humanities electives, passing up “Queer Musicology” in favor of a decent literature or history course. In their major courses, STEM students focus on facts, data, and the scientific method. Driving across a bridge or ascending in the elevator of a skyscraper, you don’t care about the class, race, gender, and identity concerns of the engineer as much as you do his skills as an engineer. Calculation correctness takes precedence over political correctness. The job market reflects this reality. A Career Builder survey of 2014 college grads found that 51% of those working are not in jobs that require a college degree. Not surprisingly, STEM and health care majors were more likely to be employed in full-time jobs requiring a degree in their major field of study. But the wall between serious STEM and often frivolous Humanities is cracking. A University of North Dakota doctoral candidate asks the ques-

tion “Are STEM Syllabi Gendered?” Her “Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis” asserts that “Grading on a curve is one way that the literature has found to be competitive and discouraging to women and minorities,” and suggests the use of “less competitive teaching methods” to “improve the experience of female students.” How long before STEM students are choosing between “Lady Gaga and the Physics of Gender Identity” and “One, Two, Many: Aboriginal Calculus”? This doctoral student described STEM courses as “chilly” to women in part because of their “competitive environment,” “individualistic culture,” and “comprehensive exams.” Consider that the next time you board an airplane. What kind of education did that aeronautical engineer have? Hopefully not one based on the type of thinking that produced “A feminist glaciology framework for global environmental change research.” This exploration of “the relationships among gender, science, and glaciers” merges “feminist postcolonial science studies and feminist political ecology,” “leading to more just and equitable science and human-ice interactions.” You can read all about it in the journal Progress in Human Geography. Providing children with great STEM learning opportunities is critical to our state’s economic well-being, but we must not allow academia’s penchant for gender, race, and political lenses to cloud the teaching of STEM. Maybe this is the time for YOU to be seated in that chamber? In my opinion, New Hampshire has never needed Constitutional Conservatives in office more than now. Our state has embraced and is currently implementing so many Progressive stances, our New Hampshire Advantage is turning into a mere phrase of empty words.

We need CONSERVATIVE legislation and we need to educate our citizens on what this actually means for THEM. I believe there is no better legislator than the “regular” citizen who has the desire to make their voice heard. Life-long politicians are not what we need. We need new blood to invigorate the process. WE NEED YOU! For anyone who would like information or has a

35 question regarding possibly running for state office, you can visit http:// sos.nh.gov/Elections.aspx. And, I am also happy to try to answer a question/ concern if you so desire. I can be reached at jane4newhampshire@gmail.com. We need to bring Conservativism back to New Hampshire. YOU are the answer. And, together, we can get the job done!

four years before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. She was still his secretary when he died in 2006. But, in all those years, I never once heard Professor Friedman mention, in public or in private, that he had a black secretary. By all accounts, she was an outstanding secretary, and that was what mattered. The biggest difference between the left and right today, when it comes to racial issues, is that liberals tend to take the side of those blacks who are doing the wrong things -hoodlums the left depicts as martyrs, while the right defends those blacks more likely to be the victims of those hoodlums. Later, when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was sponsored by Democrats, a higher percentage of Congressional Republicans voted for it than did Congressional Democrats. Revisionist histories tell a different story. But, as Casey Stengel used to say, “You could look it up” -- in the Congressional Record, in this case. Conservatives who took part in the civil rights marches, or who were otherwise for equal rights for blacks, have not made nearly as much noise about it as liberals do. 12th Annual Funspot Indoor Triathlon Raises Over $34,000 LACONIA – The 12th Annual Funspot Indoor Triathlon presented by the Union Diner and Franklin Savings Bank, held on Saturday March 12, raised a record setting $34,000 for the NH Humane Society! “When we came up with this idea 12 years ago, we never imagined it could yield the kind of money that it is today,â€? said Starr Lawton of Funspot. “Several years ago at one of the meetings we held about the event, Brendan Smith, Editor of The Weirs Times, came up with the idea of teams raising pledges, and that was the turning point for the Triathlon. It is incredibly heartwarming to see all these people really ‘blow it out of the water’ in their fundraising‌all for the animalsâ€?. This fun-filled triathlon saw 34 teams of four competing in bowling, mini golf, and games (darts, skee-ball and pinball). Prizes were awarded for highest individual, as well as, team scores; along with the ever popular, “at least I triedâ€? award for last place. “There’s no other event like it, it’s really unique and, most importantly, the Triathlon raises money for animals in need,â€? stated Rose Pucci of the Union Diner. “That’s why we’ve been involved for so many years and plan to be for many more.â€? Part of the team competition is collecting pledges ahead of the triathlon for a chance to win a super raffle prize; this year it was a gas bbq grill

donated by AmeriGas. The more pledges brought in by a team, the more super raffle tickets each member received, and the more funds are raised for the animals that need it most at the NH Humane Society. The Looney Bin Girls were this year’s highest pledge collecting team, raising $6,200! “The Funspot Indoor Triathlon has become a much anticipated and key fundraising event for the New Hampshire Humane Society, said Marylee Gorham, Executive Director for NHHS. “We are so thankful for the support of Funspot, the Lawton Family, and all the athletes that participate and fundraise to help those who cannot speak for themselves, the animals. A special thanks to all of the sponsors of the Triathlon; Union Diner, Franklin Savings Bank, Chippers, Mainstay Technologies, Funspot, Northeast Communications (Mix 94.1, Oldies 92.9, WSCY 106.9 and 100.1 The Planet), AmeriGas, Celebration Awards and Gifts, and the 603 Brewery. The NH Humane Society is a standalone, 501(c)3 non-profit that does not receive, nor give, funds to national animal welfare agencies. They strive to find responsible and caring forever homes and offer support programs to the community. For more information visit www. nhhumane.org.
