We cherished every moment with him, desperately creating new memories to treasure. When his appetite waned the second time, we knew he didn’t have long. He spent his last day, insisting on being by my side, while I did the usual barn chores and farm routine, along with all the other animals. Later that afternoon, my family and I were strug-

Swing Dance with the Tall Granite Big Band at Pitman’s On Saturday, April 9 at 7pm the Tall Granite Big Band carries on its Swing tradition Texas style at Pitman’s Freight Room. 94 New Salem Street, Laconia. Organized in Concord last year, the 18-member band has its roots in Texas with music collected over seven decades by the late Houston bandleader Johnny Dyson. The Dyson band’s early repertoire included classics from Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Perez Prado, Duke Ellington, Harry James, and other greats. But Dyson also worked closely with Texas arrang¬ers including Don Elam and Fred Baetge, and over time his bands acquired unique material reflecting the vital “Third Coast” culture and its Blues and Latin influences, which help distinguish Tall Granite today. Today, our members are drawn from around the Granite State and our focus – as it was in Dyson’s day -- remains on dancing! Our Pitman’s Dance Nights typically are prefaced with a complimentary Swing dance lesson from area instructors to help everyone acquire or brush up their moves! So if you’re done with dueling banjos or screaming guitars, grab your two-tone shoes, slick back that hair, join us at the excellent Pitman’s Freight Room and swing and sway or just relax to the Tall Granite Big Band’s smokey horns and unique sound! Tickets are $15. This month features a Free Rumba Lesson before the show from 7 – 8pm. Doors open at 6pm and we are a BYO Venue. Call 527-0043 for reservations. www. pitmansfreightroom.com

Chasing my friend Kris down Bretton Woods’ slopes was extra fun in the spring sun. A little snow decorated Mount Washington and the other high peaks. The breezeway is full of gear--skis, bicycles, hiking shoes, boots and winter clothing are sharing the same space. My golf clubs are still in the attic but not for long. I drove past Angus Lea and Crotched Mountain yesterday and saw people on the fairways and the pins in the cups. But we’re still skiing in April, just barely. The lifts at a majority of the ski areas have stopped spinning but the major players up north are open until their last man-made flake melts. Last night Becca and I had great after work fun at Crotched Mountain. We hiked and carried our equipment tied to our backpacks. We visited the old fire tower site and snacked at the picnic table at the viewing ledge. After our break we hiked back to the ski area summit. I skied and Becca snowboarded; we connected the patches of snow all the way down to the base.

Becca on the Kinsman Ridge Trail. This time of year the trails in the White Mountains are still snow and ice covered. This is no place for sneakers--good boots and mirco-spikes are needed to stay on your feet. The funny part was that we weren’t the only ones on the mountain. We saw a mountain biker on the trail go by and as we were schussing down another skier was heading up. Yes, we’re enjoying every last bit of winter. Becca and I had a fine time Saturday morning at Cannon Mountain. Becca decided to bet on Can-

To the Editor: The Black Lives Matter movement and various other leftist leaders, politicians, and groups try to deceive us about the threats to black children from police. The threats to young people from things that families, friends, teachers, and acquaintances influence are 250 times greater than the threat from police and perhaps many thousand times greater

Our Story

than the threat to people who obey police commands (even if someone feels they are undeserved). The fact is that the chance of police using harmful force against someone who is following their directions, as responsible parents teach their children, is essentially zero. The top three killers, responsible for over 77% of black male deaths ages 15-24, are homicide, accidents, and suicide (http:// goo.gl/GftYNg.). Black males, 20-24, are three times more likely to die from HIV, the sixth most likely cause of death, than from legal intervention. The top two killers (http:// goo.gl/3nA0Dt), claiming 39-48% of black females ages 15 -24 are accidents and homicide, number 5 is suicide. The main causes of death for all young people, 15-24, in 2013 (http://goo.gl/ laC6gT) were 11,619 from accidents, 4878 from suicide, 4329 from homicide (almost all black on black, white on white, etc.), 3796 from drugs, 149 from alcohol, and 109 from HIV. These lethal results are influenced by family, friends, acquaintances, teachers, etc., not by police. Concerned fathers, involved in their children’s lives, are major factors in reducing the chances of their children being harmed. The children of single mothers are much more at risk (studies vary but suggest): 5 times more likely to commit suicide, 9 times more likely to drop out of high school, 10 times

more likely to abuse drugs, 14 times more likely to commit rape, 20 times more likely to end up in prison and 32 times more likely to run away from home. Many people have been deceived by leftist agitators who get and maintain power by sowing distrust of our nation’s institutions, by promoting lies, e.g., Hands up, don’t shoot”, and by making false promises. Police pursue criminals, not the population at large. Compared to the populations of criminals (rather than the general population), police kill whites at a greater rate than blacks. The fact is that the criminal population is disproportionately black. The frustration of the black community is understandable, they have been deceived by the promises of Democrat politicians whose policies and promises sound good but lock many people in lives of poverty, broken families, high crime areas, and despair. Obviously those Democrat politicians don’t care about black lives; one wonders why the black community keeps re-electing the politicians who continue the policies that oppress blacks. Parents concerned about their children need to focus on potentially significant harmful factors. Poor schools deprive children of educations and opportunities. The wrong friends and acquaintances introduce them to drugs and crime. Self-interested leaders and See mail boat on 24

PET OF THE WEEK #5

I’m tired of hearing about this war against women; as far as I’m concerned, there’s been a war against men in this country for years and no one ever talks about it. And it has been waged by women. We hear all this blah, blah, blah everyday that women in this country are being discriminated against. Give me a break! Women have never had it so good; all at the expense of men. It seems men have caved into women on everything, even when we shouldn’t have. Take beer for example. I never knew any women who actually liked beer; it was a man’s domain. We men learned to like it when we were younger. Our fathers and uncles introduced it to us as a rite of passage. We didn’t like the taste of it at first, but we knew that we had to endure it. It was a part of becoming a man. Women were busy with their green crème de menthes and their chardonnays, but we men held our ground and imbibed on beer after beer. Then women wanted in on the action. We didn’t want to taste their green crème de menthe, we were happy to leave them to their own. But then women’s lib came along and suddenly they were screaming foul. “How come there is no

usually get their way. We aren’t even safe when it comes to the clothes we put on our own bodies. No matter what she wears we always say she “looks nice” (well, she usually does). But when we head out for a Friday night wearing that old college sweatshirt and work jeans, do we ever get a “looks nice?” Just another battle they have come out on top of in this one-sided war. I won’t even get into this new sensitivity training where women are always telling us men “it’s okay to cry.” This just makes me sad. Over the years women have realized more and more their power over us men and they often go out of their way to make it obvious. Who can forget the famous ad for that deodorant that claimed “Strong enough for a man but made for a woman.” What a taunt! We men should have taken to the streets and protested that men should be able to have the same. But we knew that it would be useless, that there never would be a deodorant strong enough for a woman but made for a man. So, I’m not buying this whole war on women thing; I think they’ve got it pretty good. So, I’m just going to sit back, pop the top on my high calorie beer, pull up my T-shirt and scratch my beer belly. Don’t look for any tears from me.

beer for women?!” They screamed. So, the beer companies caved in before any lawsuits developed and soon the market was flooded with low-calorie beers. But we men stood idly by, afraid to speak up lest we be considered heartless. But it didn’t stop there. Suddenly, low calorie wasn’t good enough; now they wanted beer that was not only less filling but tasted great, something to make up for the sweetness they were missing from their green crème de menthes. So companies started making flavored beer. FLAVORED BEER!! We men were horrified but we once again sat idly by and watched as our rite of passage beverage soon got lost on the shelves amidst a sea of beers that would have made our grandfathers turn in their graves. Too many of us men have meekly embraced these tasteless light beers and strawberry ales, just to keep the peace. Some of us have even, without admitting it, enjoyed them. Women won this battle and it only encourages them to go even further. Women also complain about the rights to control their own bodies. They certainly don’t feel the same way when it comes to men. We are shunned when we sprout large beer bellies or forget to shave for a couple of days. A guy can’t even walk around with a bad comb over without some woman talking about him behind his back. I won’t even get into ear hairs. These are our bodies and we believe it is up to us to make decisions regarding them. Still, wives, girlfriends and mothers insist on having the final say and they

Nuclear Jihad: The Threats Are Inside Our Tent It’s not over. It’s never over. After last week’s deadly airport and subway bombings in Brussels, the Belgian government reby Michelle Malkin mains on high Syndicated Columnist alert for jihad attacks and espionage at its nuclear facilities. One Belgian nuke plant security guard was murdered recently and his ID is missing. Two of the Brussels bombers reportedly spied on the home of a top senior scientist in the country’s nuclear program. ISIS has been implicated in an alleged insider plot to obtain radioisotopes from one of Belgium’s nuclear plants for a dirty bomb. Two former Belgian nuke plant workers left their jobs to fight for ISIS in Syria. This is all according to plan. The al-Qaida house organ, Inspire magazine, has urged its followers to conduct attacks using “specialized expertise and those who work in sensitive locations that would offer them unique opportunities” to wreak havoc. Could Islamic terrorists and other criminal menaces now exploit homeland security vulnerabilities at our own nuclear power plants and other utilities here in the U.S.? Answer: They already have. In 2011, a little-remembered Department of Homeland Security intelligence report warned of the ongoing enterprise of jihadi infiltration at nuclear, utility and other infrastructure facilities. The memo, titled “Insider Threat to Utilities,” warned that “violent extremists have, in fact, obtained insider positions.” Moreover, “outsiders have attempted to

solicit utility-sector employees” for damaging physical and cyber attacks. “Based on the reliable reporting of previous incidents, we have high confidence in our judgment that insiders and their actions pose a significant threat to the infrastructure and information systems of U.S. facilities,” the bulletin detailed. “[I]nsider information on sites, infrastructure, networks, and personnel is valuable to our adversaries and may increase the impact of any attack on the utilities infrastructure.” No kidding, Captain Obvious and First Lieutenant Duh! Since the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. nuclear industry has spent more than $2 billion upgrading security -- including more than doubling the number of armed guards at entrances and checkpoints surrounding the plants. But when the threats are coming from inside the tent, all those armed forces outside the perimeters are for show. South Jersey jihadist and al-Qaida-linked radical Sharif Mobley held positions at several nuclear power plants in Salem County, New Jersey, before moving to Yemen. He had passed several federal background checks as recently as 2008. In December, Mobley was sentenced to 10 years in prison after shooting a guard during an attempted escape from detention on terrorism charges. How many radicalized Muslims -- homegrown converts, foreign business visa holders and foreign students -- are working inside America’s sensitive infrastructure? Thanks to our suicidal refusal to profile international visitors and workers from jihadist breeding grounds, nobody knows! Politically correct politicians and

Yes, The Delegates Can Decide Donald Trump has made his first threat to sue over the procedures for selecting delegates to the Republican by Rich Lowry convention. It Syndicated Columnist surely won’t be his last. The Wall Street Journal reported that Ted Cruz may come out of Louisiana with as many as 10 more delegates than Trump, even though the mogul narrowly beat Cruz in the popular vote there. In a tweet, Trump pronounced it “unfair,” and worthy of litigation. The Louisiana delegate picture isn’t evidence of anything untoward. Trump and Cruz both won 18 delegates on election night. Marco Rubio, since dropped out, won five, and another five are uncommitted. The Cruz campaign has done the nitty-gritty work to see that those delegates are likely Cruz supporters. The only scandal here is that the Cruz campaign, built on grassroots organizing muscle, knows the process and is working hard for every advantage. Trump’s

plaint is a little like showing up at a cricket match and crying foul because the opposing team knows the rules and all you know is that you swing a bat. The Louisiana flap is a window into the intricate, state-by-state process of picking delegates to a convention in Cleveland where the allegiance of every last delegate might matter. If there is an open convention, Trump will argue that the voters should rule, not delegates no one has heard of, selected at obscure precinct, county, district and state meetings. He will, in short, declare the entire exercise of a contested convention illegitimate. Is it? We are used to the voters directly deciding, and should Trump perform strongly enough to win a majority of delegates, 1,237, they, in effect, will. But if he falls short, the delegates enter the picture. If Trump has only won a plurality of delegates, a badly divided party would be nominating a candidate who couldn’t reach a majority and, so far, has shown no general-election appeal. Supreme Hypocrisy If there is one thing that is bipartisan in Washington, it is brazen hypocrisy. Currently there is much indignation being expressed by Thomas Sowell by Democrats Syndicated Columnist because the Republicancontrolled Senate refuses to hold confirmation hearings on President Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. The Democrats complain, and the media echo their complaint, that it is the Senate’s duty to provide “advice and consent” on the President’s appointment of various federal officials. Therefore, according to this claim, the Senate is neglecting its Constitutional duty by refusing even to hold hearings to determine whether the nominee is qualified, and then vote accordingly. First of all, the “advice and consent” provision of the Constitution is a restriction on the President’s power, not an imposition of a duty on the Senate. It says nothing about the Senate’s having a duty to hold hearings, or vote, on any Presidential nominee, whether for the Supreme Court or for any other federal institution. The power to consent is the power to refuse to consent, and for many years no hearings were held, whether the Senate consented or did not consent. Nor have Democrats hesitated, when they controlled the Senate, to refuse to hold hearings or to vote when a lame-duck President nominated someone for some position requiring Senate confirmation during a Presidential election year.

When the shoe was on the other foot, the Republicans made the same arguments as the Democrats are making today, and the Democrats made the same arguments as the Republicans are now making. The obvious reason, in both cases, is that the party controlling the Senate wants to save the appointment for their own candidate for the Presidency to make after winning the upcoming election. The rest is political hypocrisy on both sides. None of this is new. It was already well-known 40 years ago, when President Gerald Ford nominated me to become one of the commissioners of the Federal Trade Commission during the 1976 Presidential election year. After months passed without any hearings being held, I went to see the chief legislative aide of the committee that was responsible for confirming or denying. When the two of us were alone, he said to me, quite frankly, “We’ve gone over your record with a fine tooth comb and can find nothing to object to. So we are simply not going to hold hearings at all.” “If this were not an election year,” he said, “your nomination would have sailed right through. But we think our man is going to win the Presidential election this year, and we want him to nominate someone in tune with our thinking.” Various Democrats who are currently denouncing the Republican Senate, including Vice President Biden, have used very similar arguments against letting lame-duck Republican Presidents appoint Supreme Court justices. Last week, the New York Times ran a front-page “news” story about something Chief Justice John Roberts had said, more than a month ago, prior to the See Sowell on 27

thing in its power to document the damage so that these crimes do not go unpunished.” After ISIL captured Palmyra, it turned to destroying archaeological sites such as two 2,000 year old temples, the Arch, and turning the Roman amphitheater into an execution ground. ISIL claims such pre-Islamic structures are idolatrous and should be smashed and sacked. Following the occupation, Maamoun Abdulkarim, the Syrian antiquities director, advised 80 percent of the Unesco World Heritage site nonetheless remains intact. Beyond its hateful political ideology, ISIL has spread a noxious anti-cultural logic that it must destroy the legacy of pre-Islamic civilization. Thus when ISIL seized Mosul in Iraq, it trashed the famed Museum and later sent its demolition teams to blast the storied ruins of Iraqi civilization. And the same in Syria. Blasting, bulldozing and looting art treasures from the past and in some cases allowing more portable objects to enter the global antiquities black markets. Such damage is not unique. In Afghanistan in the Spring of 2001, the Taliban’s Islamic extremists targeted age-old Buddhist statues in Bamiyan. The world watched in horror but did nothing as the Taliban thugs blasted statues dating from the 7th century AD into oblivion. Such cultural barbarism is not unique to the Middle East. During China’s so-called “Cultural Revo-

U N I T E D NATIONS— The modern day barbarians have been routed from the ancient city of Palmyra, but the destruction by John J. Metzler left in the wake Syndicated Columnist of the nearly year long Islamic State occupation has been near catastrophic. After five years of conflict, war torn Syria sees the fruits of limited cease fires allowing observers to gaze upon a near apocalyptic humanitarian and physical landscape. That’s why the liberation of the ancient city of Palmyra is key; signaling a significant setback for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, (ISIL) and hopefully now a turning point from wanton destruction to the eventual restoration and preservation of Syria itself. The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO) stated clearly, “Palmyra contains the monumental ruins of a great city that was one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world. From the 1st to the 2nd century, the art and architecture of Palmyra, standing at the crossroads of several civilizations, married GraecoRoman techniques with local traditions and Persian influences.” Yet UNESCO’s Director Irina Bukova warned, “The deliberate destruction of heritage is a war crime, and UNESCO will do every-

delegates would be justified in looking to someone else better suited to win an election and protect the party’s interests. It’s not unheard of for top vote-getters in America to fall short of the top prize. Otherwise, there would have been a Gore administration. Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000, but still fell short of George W. Bush, who won the Electoral College. If you count Michigan, where Barack Obama’s name didn’t appear on the ballot, Hillary Clinton very narrowly won the most votes in the 2008 primaries. That was good enough for an appointment as secretary of state -- under President Obama, who understood the delegate-allocation rules much better. Trump has thrived so far without an extensive, traditional political operation. But politics isn’t only about TV interviews and big rallies. There is a reason that the system also rewards candidates who can motivate and muster people to do the grass-roots activism involved in winning small victories at local meetings. This is literally getting people involved in the process, and it could take on an outsized significance in deciding the immediate future of the Republican Party. Trump would be wellserved to complain less about the rules, and learn more.

There was plenty of what might be called ordinary news in the Wednesday issue of The News and Critic newspaper of March 6, 1918, including political gatherings, sports events, NH fish and game activities, the weather report, church meetings, death notices, along with information about the activities of some local citizens. Those, however, were no ordinary times because America was at war and the newspaper reflected that fact by reporting on the involvement of the people of New Hampshire in World War I. Hundreds of New Hampshire soldiers recruited under the Selective Service Act were sent to Camp Greene in Charlotte, North Carolina, where in March of 1918 they became bogged down in the mud. New Hampshire Congressmen Edward Hills Wason of New Boston and Sherman Everett Burroughs of Dunbarton travelled to Camp Greene in February according to The News and Critic which stated that “The trip of the New Hampshire statesmen was eventful‌. Instead of meeting Mr. Burroughs and Mr. Wason with a brass band at the camp gate, the New Hampshire military officers were there with two pair of high rubber boots.â€? They found that the boots were needed to get through the mud that caused many problems at the Camp, including preventing the men from engaging in training exercises and creating many unsanitary conditions. The congressmen also found that, although the Secretary of War had stated that all the men were armed with new rifles, the New Hampshire companies, for the most part, had but from six to fourteen and some “old

CLIPPERS, CELTICS, AND L.A. For NBA fans, “Boston vs. Los Angeles evokes imagery of the Celtics vs. the Lakers—probably the league’s most storied rivalry. Russell vs. Chamberlain. Bird vs. Magic. Paul Pierce vs. Kobe Bryant. But this is 2016. Kobe’s retiring and the Lakers stink with the worst record in the 15-team Western Conference. So a Boston fan like me on a California vacation thus opted to see the Celtics take on the playoff –bound Clippers at L.A.’s Staples Center—as opposed to the hapless Lakers. “Hapless Lakers still sounds weird to say. But that’s an unexpected 2016 reality. Along with Donald Trump and $1.50 gas. Can you say “Isaiah Thomas vs. Chris Paul? Built in 1999, the Staples Center has giant statues of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson outside its downtown locale. As we approach the nesting season for wild birds, many questions arise regarding nest boxes. Do all birds use bird houses? If not, why do birds build nests exposed to weather and predators? Truth be told, few birds will use a nest box to raise their young. To a wild bird’s mind, an enclosed box with only one hole is a trap. A predator can easily raid an occupied box using that single hole while parents and young have no means of escape. Birds that use nest boxes are typically bluebirds, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, titmice, sparrows and swallows. There are large birds such as wood ducks that also use a nest box, but they are commonly found in marshlands or near an open body of water. Wrens are the only species of wild birds that prefer their nest boxes hanging rather than post mounting. These particular winged acrobats subscribe to the theory that predators have a much more difficult time raiding a smaller, mobile abode. The species of wild birds that avail themselves of nest boxes are referred to as clinging birds. These small birds have developed a preferred method of entering a bird house using only the edge of the entrance holes. Clinging birds can easily feed from bird feeders that do not use perches or portals, such as wire-clad feeders. Woodpeckers are the only species of wild birds that excavate holes in trees

for nesting. Other wild bird species will gladly use an abandoned hole in trees to raise their own young. Nature does not provide perches outside tree cavities for very good reasons. Perches on bird houses provide a resting place for predators such as large birds, chipmunks and squirrels as they enlarge the entrance holes and raid nest boxes. Since clinging birds do not require perches to enter nest boxes, one should not use or build a bird house with perches. Old nests should be removed from bird houses before each nesting season begins. Many wild birds will not start a new nest inside a bird house if they see an existing nest, thinking the dwelling has been spoken for. Also, old nesting material may contain mites and microbes that will attach themselves to hatchlings, causing fatal results. It is best to remove the old nests and place them in your trash for complete removal. If you simply deposit the old nest on the ground below the bird house, birds may attempt to reuse the material in the new nest, defeating the purpose of your efforts. Natural or earth-tone colors work best on nest boxes. Wild bird parents wish to blend in with the local environment for the safety of their young. Brilliant colors only draw unwanted attention to bird houses and made be the deciding factor in choosing not to build a nest. Enjoy your birds!

We are grateful that he was able to do so‌..with his family at his side. He passed away that night, less than five short weeks since his first symptom had appeared. The date was February 27th. But before I could gather my emotions enough to do so, our daughter, Sharleigh, wrote her own from her college dorm. The first time I read it, I had myself an unbridled cry‌..and every time since. Anything I could write about Dakota would only pale in comparison to Sharleigh’s heartfelt tribute, so I leave his memory in her care. Thank you, Sharleigh, for capturing Dakota’s essence with your eloquent words, and for sharing them with us all. A more special bond could not be found than that between you and him. He is missed‌. SO much. But your words will help us remember with both a tear and a smile‌.. MY BEST FRIEND’S TAIL by Sharleigh Thomson If you are very, very lucky in this world, you are blessed with a best friend or two. Sometimes that friend is human. Other times that friend is a dog. When I was eight I held my best friend just moments after he was born. The night before Christmas Eve, my parents brought him home. After my brother, he was the best Christmas gift I have ever received. We chose the name Dakota, which means “friend

to all in a Native American tongue. We had no idea how well he would live up to that name. He truly loved everyone. Ferociously loyal, loving, and gentle with everyone he met. Through the years he remained MY dog. He would sleep beside my bed every night. He always laid close enough that I could have my hand on him from the bed. On the nights when I had nightmares he would climb into my bed with me until I fell asleep. He always put himself between me and danger, whether that meant standing between me and the road when we walked places or pushing himself between me and other, less friendly dogs. He was very angry when I went away to school. When I went home for Christmas break, he showed his distaste for my absence by ignoring my existence for a solid week. He was always very stubborn and passive aggressive. As a puppy he had extreme separation anxiety, chewing apart both the interior of my mother’s car and part of a door frame on separate occasions. And if he didn’t want to go somewhere, he would lay down and refuse to move. Despite his sometimesdestructive behavior, Kota See dawn on 17

fabric softener in glass dispensers for a more decorative look. Lastly, paint the space a pretty, soothing color to give the room a refreshed feel and make it feel larger. Paint an Accent Wall For an easy, inexpensive way to add drama to any room, paint an accent wall. Perfect for highlighting a focal point, such as a fireplace or shelving unit, an accent wall commands attention. According to celebrity designer Taniya Nayak, brightly colored walls or furniture, and bold, vibrant prints, are in style. So breathe new life into a room by incorporating these elements. The key to painting is all in preparation, including washing down walls and taping around windows and baseboards. One of the most important tools you’ll need is a premium painter’s tape, like FrogTape brand painter’s tape. Treated with PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape Multi-Surface and Delicate Surface painting tapes can be used on a variety of surfaces and deliver sharp paint lines for professional-looking results. Enliven a Backsplash In the kitchen, a few cans of paint will work wonders on walls, cabinets, a kitchen island and your backsplash. Paint your

backsplash a solid color, use a stencil, or even create the look of faux tiles using painter’s tape. Consider the other colors in the room before settling on the perfect shade. If cabinets are dark, choose a lighter shade for the backsplash to keep the room from feeling too heavy. If you have white or lightcolored cabinets, a bright or darker paint provides contrast. For the finish, opt for a glossy sheen, as it’s more durable and easily wipes clean. Rejuvenate Furniture There are many quick, inexpensive ways to rejuvenate existing furniture. Seeing furniture in the same position every day gets boring. Swap pieces around to instantly redefine the space. Plus, you can use this opportunity to thoroughly clean those tough-to-reach spots. A fresh coat of paint can also provide a powerful update to such furniture as stools, chairs, bookshelves and dressers. Whether it’s a piece you already own or a garage sale gem, adding a personal touch will create new dimension. Make it pop with eye-catching colors and unique hardware. Remember, it doesn’t have to take months to make-over rooms in your home. You’ll be surprised what you can accomplish in one weekend.

Lakes Region Tree Service This new home has a severe drainage issue and the builder needs to correct it. builder just has not put them in yet. For many years, U.S. building codes have addressed the grade, or ground slope, around a finished house. It's a minimum standard -- a builder can do much better. The code states that if you measure out from the house at a 90-degree angle the dirt 10 feet away from the house needs to be 6 i n c h e s lower than the dirt immediately adjacent to

design, build or remodel your dream home

the house. What's more, the code states that there needs to be at least 6 inches of foundation extending above the ground to prevent overland water from flowing over the top of the foundation or slab. I've seen countless houses where this 6-inch requirement is violated. Remember, 6 inches is a minimum standard, and it's best to have more, at least 9 or 12 inches, in See builder on 20

DEAR EMILY: Based on your excellent photo, I can see exactly where the builder made a few mistakes, all of which will be fairly easy to correct. The biggest issue is going to be who pays for the required work -and my guess is it's going to be you. I say this without having access to your plans, specifications and contract. my opinion. Based on your photo, I feel that more dirt needs to be removed from around your house. The flat area with the gravel seems to have some slope, but it's hard to tell if it has enough. It also seems like there's only about 7 feet of area that's flat next to the house. I recommend that you have more. I'd consider installing a low retaining wall that's about 3 feet high that runs roughly parallel with the wall of the house in the photograph. This wall should be about 16 feet away from your home. It would allow you to have a very nice raised planting flower bed next to the fences that surround your home. This may work well for raising vegetables, depending upon the compass orientation of your home. You'll be able to slope the ground away from the house and the retaining wall creating a slight low spot in the somewhat flat area between the house and the wall. This ground must also slope to the low spot of your property so water flowing down from the higher land beyond the fences will then continue on its journey to

the ocean. Remember, before your home was built, water drained across the lot, trying to get to a local stream or river so it could be transported back to the ocean. This happens in most places around the world except for land that's below sea level! Once the land has the proper slope and grading is complete, you can ensure you'll never have a soggy yard if you install a trench drain in the flat area where the sloping ground has been shaped to create a shallow swale for the overland water to flow. This trench drain only needs to be 6 inches wide and about 2 feet deep. This trench needs to extend to a low part of your land beyond and downslope from your home. The trench contains a perforated 4-inch pipe, and it's surrounded by the exact same gravel I see in your photo. You want gravel pieces that are the size of grapes or walnuts. No sand should be in the gravel. Water in the soil flows down rapidly through the gravel and into the pipe. This underground system allows your yard to dry out rapidly after it rains. The bottom of the

trench can have a slight slope of about 1/8 inch per foot of horizontal run. If your lot has a steeper slope, and many do, the bottom of the trench, once past your home, will eventually reach daylight. This means the trench becomes more shallow because the bottom of the trench is not parallel with the top of the ground. You want this to happen so the water flows out of the pipe across your yard If you do all the things I recommend, I guarantee you'll have a dry yard for as long as you own your home. You'll also gain some nice flat land to play games outdoors and have some fun. The work that needs to be done is not that hard, but it will be made much easier if you have a professional do it who has lots of experience with final grading. Need an answer? parkway in Franconia Notch, and we made big turns over and over. We skied and snowboarded non-stop until mid-day. We didn’t stop because we were tired but because we wanted to go hiking. We didn’t travel far but drove to the Beaver Brook Trailhead in Kinsman Notch (Route 112, west of Lost River). The Kinsman Ridge Trail reaches from Kinsman Notch all the way to Cannon Mountain’s Tramway parking lot. The trail follows the spine of the ridge over several smaller mountains, a 3,000-footer and three 4,000-footer peaks (South and North Kinsman and Cannon). We headed up the Appalachian Trail northbound on the Kinsman Ridge Trail and we bare-booted and hopped from rock to rock as we went up the steep slope. A short distance after the intersection of the Dilly Trail (a notorious steep trail that originates from Lost River) we put on our micro-spikes. At the higher elevations the ground was covered with ice and snow and the micro-spikes made it possible for us to stay upright. There were no footprints in the snow and we were See patenaude on 23

sure we were the only people out on this section of trail in sometime. We were surprised since the parking lot was full of cars. We didn’t meet anyone on the trail that afternoon but I was hoping we’d see a moose. There were quite a few moose tracks in the snow. The trail has many ups and downs and we enjoyed the clear view through the leaf-less trees deep into the woods and off towards Lincoln and the Franconia Range. We stopped along the way at any open outlook to enjoy the view. We ended up following the trail to Blue Ridge North Peak, elevation

We had a full day and the return trip went by quickly. We kept on our micro-spikes well past the point where we had put them on to be sure we didn’t have to just count on rock hopping. Oh the shoulder season, not winter but not quite summer. At least we don’t’ have black flies yet. Have fun.

politicians encourage self-defeating behavior and steal people’s opportunities for better lives. To fulfill our nation’s promises of freedom and opportunity, our children deserve and our country needs every child to get a good education, to learn good citizenship, and to become a self-supporting citizen who enjoys, supports, and passes on to the next generation the blessings of being an American. Only when Americans elect politicians who benefit from, and therefore assist, people’s success not their poverty, and who implement policies that encourage, rather than break up, families will we demonstrate that black lives and all lives matter.

I was reminded of these disparate traditions when I went to the concession stand and looked at all the Celtic throw-back journeys worn by fans. There was a #6 (Russell). A #32 (McHale). Several #33’s (Bird). And, appropriately, a whole bunch of #34s (Pierce). The game was a bummer for those of us wearing green, as the Clippers rolled. Paul had seven assists and four points in the first seven minutes and L.A. never looked back, winning 114-90. Austin Rivers (son of Doc) led the Clippers with 16 points. LA’s best player, Blake Griffin, didn’t even play, as he was serving a suspension. That’s the thing about sports. You never know what you’re going to get. You pay the big bucks and hope to see a classic contest. But for Boston fans, it was a dog of a game.

Millions of Americans are faced with rising healthcare costs and higher taxes, unstable and expensive health insurance exchanges, mountains of red tape, and arrogant bureaucratic attacks on personal and religious liberty. These and other

mounting problems, as Heritage Foundation Senior Fellow Robert E. Moffit shows in a comprehensive Heritage paper, plague the Affordable Care Act. The law is a good example of bad policy.

of Culture Under Threat to highlight the threat to sites such as St. Elijah’s Monastery in Iraq, Palymra and the Mosul Museum. The map lists 700 heritage sites throughout the 22 states of the Arab League, 230 of the sites which have since been destroyed. Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, offered interesting views on the recapture of Palmyra by the Syrian army backed by the Russians. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Johnson called Bashir Assad a “vile tyrant” but added “the victory of Assad is a victory for archaeology, a victory for all those who care about the ancient monuments.” Johnson called for the top notch expertise of British archeologists to help restore this ancient city known as “the Bride of the Desert.” Beyond ISIL’s cultural barbarism we see the humanitarian disaster unfolding inside Syria. Addressing the Security Council, Stephen O’Brien the UN’s Humanitarian Chief spoke of the slightly improved situation in light of the ceasefire. Yet, “Many of the 4.6 million people in need in besieged and hard to reach areas still remain outside our reach to to in-

security and obstructions.” Essentially, the UN relief has reached only about a third of the nearly five million people internally displaced inside Syria. Treating Syria’s humanitarian symptoms remain admirable, but the political Problem must be solved. Though some quarters may question if Palmyra’s liberation from Islamic State by the military forces of the Syrian dictator Bashir Assad should be celebrated, the facts favor this positive development. The Assad’s at their worst never ruined or wrecked ancient Roman and Greek treasures scattered throughout the country. On the other hand, Islamic State policy is to deliberately desecrate, destroy and loot pre-Islamic treasures. Moreover, a century from now who will remember this evil ruler, but all will still cherish millennia of civilization which stand as silent testament to Syria’s ancient heritage. John J. Sportsquiz Answer The Clippers played in San Diego from 1978-84. From 1970-78 they were the Buffalo Braves. In 1978 new owner John Y. A Californian, Levin then decided to move the Braves to San Diego, something the NBA would have never allowed him to do with the Celtics. rested Cruz Loya Alvares, who was working at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station despite being a Mexican illegal immigrant who had been deported in 2000. He paid human smugglers to bring him back, secured work in construction, and somehow escaped re-deportation despite being cited by Mesa County Police for driving with a suspended license.

In 2012, another Mexican illegal immigrant, Nestor Martinez-Ochoa, who worked in construction, was arrested after trying to enter the same Palo Verde nuclear power plant with a fake ID -- not by federal authorities, but again by Arpaio’s office. These arrests are exceptions, not the rule. Worksite enforcement under President Obama is a joke.

The specter of nuclear jihad is terrifying, but the chilling fact is that homeland security has already been in meltdown for years. We’re doing ourselves in. terror-coddling grievance groups condemn monitoring and tracking of Muslim refugees and Muslims enclaves (such as those in Minneapolis and Maine where tens of thousands of Somalis have resettled). They cried “Islamophobia” when homeland security officials wanted to interview Muslim visa holders from terror-sponsoring nations after the 9/11 attacks. And consider this: There are now more than 100,000 Muslim students accepted into U.S. college and universities every year from the Middle East and North Africa. Nuclear engineering is one of the fields of study for which F-1 foreign student visa holders can obtain work and extended residency through the Optional Training Program. None are screened for jihadist loyalties and sympathies. How many legal visa holders (let alone illegal visa overstayers) who entered through these pipelines have gained access to sensitive facilities? Nobody knows! Earlier this year, DHS admitted it doesn’t investigate 99 percent of illegal visa overstayers who entered here on business or tourism -- 500,000-plus in 2015 alone, including thousands from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Pakistan, Syria and Yemen. The feds still haven’t compiled up-to-date visa overstay data for those who came in as foreign students and guest workers (including high-tech foreigners working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Then there are the security breaches involving who knows how many illegal border-crossers, fake document users and deportation violators. Dozens of illegal immigrants using fake Social Security numbers were swept up in immediate post-9/11 raids at nuclear sub bases, power plants and Navy aircraft carriers. But it didn’t take long for the feds to hit the snooze button. In 2011, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio ar-

death of Justice Scalia, under the headline “Stern Rebuke For Senators.” Since Justice Scalia was still alive then, and there was no Supreme Court vacancy to fill at the time, Chief Justice Roberts’ remarks had nothing to do with the current controversy. Nor were these remarks news after such a long lapse of time. But this was part of a pattern of the New York Times’ disguising editorials as front-page news stories. In short, the political hypocrisy was matched by journalistic hypocrisy. Indeed, there was more than a little judicial hypocrisy in Chief Justice Roberts’ complaint that Senate confirmation hearings on Supreme Court nominees do not confine themselves to the nominees’ judicial qualifications, rather than their conservative or liberal orientations. If judges confined themselves to acting like judges, instead of legislating from the bench, creating new “rights” out of thin air that are nowhere to be found in the Constitution, maybe Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominees would not be such bitter and ugly ideological battles. Chief Justice Roberts himself practically repealed the 10th Amendment’s limitation on federal power when he wrote the decision that the government could order us all to buy ObamaCare insurance policies. When judges act like whores, they can hardly expect to be treated like nuns. Politicians, journalists and judges should all spare us pious hypocrisy.
