*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Season Of Ideas

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Now that the New Hampshire Lottery Commission has extended their olive branch to me in the form of a lottery ticket that is supposed to smell like bacon, I have thought long and hard for close to an hour and I have decided that in good faith I will once again submit to them some of my fantastic ideas for lottery tickets. It has been a long time since I began my boycott realizing that they weren’t going to use any of my ideas and in that span I have come up with a few doozies (whatever that means) that I have just been dying to reveal. This time of year is perfect for new scratch tickets since not only are the natives anxious for new ways to waste their money, but more and more warm season visitors will be flocking to the area with some disposable income to throw away. It is well know that the sales of lottery tickets benefit education in New Hampshire. (The incredible odds of actually winning on the things are never taught in math class‌.coincidence?) It is a lesser known fact that the sales of lottery tickets are also essential to the strength of the convenience store industry in the state and is also key in keeping many in waste management employed with the continuing need to carry the tons of losing tickets away to the recycling centers.

So, as you can see, keeping lottery tickets fresh and their sales vibrant plays an important part in the New Hampshire economy. That is why I am happy to submit, free of charge, some new ideas for lottery tickets. With the ongoing controversy of naming things the state something or other, this would be a great time to take advantage of that theme in lottery tickets. There could be different tickets for different things to be named. There would be nine concealed squares with three of each possibility on each ticket. You can only scratch off three. If those three match exactly the same “thing you can bring back it to your local convenience store for a ten dollar prize (or ten more scratch tickets, which is their hope). The winning tickets will then be sent to the State House to be counted and the ones with the “thing with the most winners will be designated the state something or other. In all fairness, this ticket should be allowed to be sold to elementary school children so they can participate as well. It will not only make them part of the process but will also show them how difficult it is to actually win on scratch tickets saving them from continuing with this fruitless endeavor as they get older. It’s a win-win (as opposed to a win-lose or a lose-lose or a lose-win) and makes the sale of the ticket helping educate kids in two different ways. Seeing that the Lottery Commission is all giddy over their “I Heart Bacon scratch ticket which, when scratched, smells like something, though I’m not sure what, they should definitely take advantage of that during the warmer months with the influx of tourists.

Working in tandem with the NH Department of Travel and Tourism (DTT), they can collect not only the obnoxious nine percent room and meals tax that keeps the DTT funded but also increase sales of lottery tickets with the “Live Free and Scratch and Sniff campaign. After a customer sits down to eat at a local restaurant, they will have the opportunity to buy a scratch ticket that, when scratched, smells like the item on the menu they are thinking of ordering so they can make a better choice. Not only will they experience the smell but, if they scratch three matching symbols of that item, they will win a free dessert (the cost of which will be deducted from restaurant’s tax payment to the state). The thinking here is that it will get more people going out to eat who will buy more than just one “scratch and sniff ticket in the relentless and fruitless pursuit of trying to win a free dessert. Of course, after failing at getting three matching symbols, they will then be so obsessed with the dessert they will just buy one, increasing their bill giving more money to the restaurant and in turn the DTT as well as the Lottery Commission. It’s a win-win-win deal. Of course this process will be complicated to organize and cost tons of money for the Lottery Commission to implement and will eventually cause big problems in their budget, but, hey, they are a state agency so those things are left to be worried about only after it reaches a critical mass. So there are my ideas for now. I have a few more but my head is starting to hurt. I’ll get back to you soon.

Letter To Honorable Members of the House Judiciary Committee My name is David Saad. I live in Rumney NH and for the last 3 years I have served on the Rumney Planning Board. I ask you to oppose SB 243 which makes changes to the right-to-know law section RSA 91A:3. RSA 91-A Preamble states: “Openness in the conduct of public business is essential to a democratic society. The purpose of this chapter is to ensure both the greatest possible public access to the actions, discussions and records of all public bodies, and their accountability to the people. Often, the most important issues to citizens and taxpayers are also the most controversial and divisive. At times, the citizens and taxpayers may be at odds with their elected officials. This democratic process plays itself out during open and transparent public meetings. However, SB 243 jeopardizes this openness and accountability to the people because this bill would allow any single member of the public body to draft a letter simply stating that they have a claim or threaten litigation against a citizen/taxpayer and effectively, that single member of the public body can now require that all future discussions regarding that topic be done in a nonpublic session, even

Our Story

if that single member has no intention of ever filing any claim. Thus, a single member of the public body can force discussion of any controversial topic into nonpublic session as long as they are willing to make a claim and put it in writing. For example, if a taxpayer feels that municipal funds are being misspent and publicly criticizes a public official for misappropriation of funds, the official can now draft a letter threatening to sue the taxpayer because of their public criticism and effectively squelch any further discussion of the misappropriation of funds issue during public meetings. Thus, a pen and piece of paper is all that is needed to subvert the public’s right to know. SB 243 lets public officials with something to hide do just that. Please uphold the spirit of RSA 91-A and insure the greatest possible public access to the actions, discussions and records of all public bodies, and their accountability to the people by opposing this bill. Thank you, David L. Saad Rumney NH.

ing cancer treatments for Granite Staters. The Senate’s support of this bill, which would prevent health insurers from charging a higher costshare for an oral anticancer medication than for one administered by IV, is a step in the right direction – but there is still work to be done, as the bill must now be voted on by the House of Representatives. Oral treatments can offer patients advantages over traditional IV chemotherapy, including the fact that they are targeted therapies which attack only the cancer cells. Oral chemotherapy also offers the flexibility and convenience of not having to drive long distances to a treatment facility for IV infusions. For the over 8,000 people who will be diagnosed with cancer in New Hampshire this year alone, it is imperative that the House of Representatives vote in support of this legislation, SB 137. It simply isn’t fair that any cancer patient would have to forgo the most effective course of treatment due to out of pocket costs. I urge all members of the New Hampshire House of Representatives to support Senate Bill 137. Gary Maheu Laconia, NH.

Using climbing skins on her split-snowboard, Becca Monroe makes her way up Mount Cardigan via the Alexandria Ski Trail. The Civilian Conservation Corps cut the Alexandria Ski Trail in 1934 and it is considered the most challenging of Cardigan’s winter trails. The trail runs between from Grand Junction to just below the Fire Warden’s Cabin. While skiers and snowboarders raced to Tuckerman Ravine, we decided to take advantage of the lingering snow on Mount Cardigan. Maple syrup farmers and spring skiing enthusiasts like the same weather. Cold nights and warm days not only makes the sap run but it makes for great snow conditions. We met at the AMC’s Cardigan Lodge at 8am. The dirt road to the lodge was still partly frozen and would surely be a muddy mess by the time we would be headed home (it was). My friend, Becca Monroe, loves snowboarding Mount Cardigan’s classic ski trails. When the trails were first laid out and then cut by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s they had only skiers in mind. The trails have good steady grades, nice sweeping turns and have widths that vary between 10 and 40 feet. They’re actually pretty snowboard friendly and

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, April 23, 2015

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Poverty Voyeurism Gwynnie P is down with the struggle, comrades. She may make $19 million a year, own mansions in London, New by Michelle Malkin York, BrentSyndicated Columnist wood, Malibu and the Hamptons, charge $550 for her Goop.com “travel backgammon set,” and fly by private jet, but she feels your pain. OK, it’s not as painful as her last $5,200 Thermage session in Santa Monica, but still, she really, really does feel the agony of the ordinary. Last week, the progressive princess celebrity joined the “SNAP challenge.” It’s basically the ice bucket challenge for bored Hollywood liberals and media-hungry Democratic politicians. For seven days (or at least for an hour or two after they publish their announcements to Twitter and Facebook), the bleeding hearts play “poor” by subsisting on a faux welfare budget. Paltrow was invited to join the poverty voyeurism racket by her good friend Chef Mario Batali -- last seen eating his way through Spain with G-Pally for a 13-part PBS TV series. What, you don’t have a chef bestie to motor around in a Mercedes with across Galicia and Cordoba as you savor almejas, salmorejo and flamenquines? When these self-indulgent stars are not binging on European delicacies, they’re purging themselves of liberal guilt with phony gimmicks like the SNAP sanctimony. The idea, Batali ex-

plains, is to “walk in the shoes of” millions who rely on government assistance to supplement their household budgets. Fortunately for Paltrow, this doesn’t mean she has to give up her $1,200 pair of Tom Ford black platform heels or anything else in her well-appointed shoe closet. All she had to do was snap a Vogue-ready photo of her $29 haul of austerity grocery items (likely purchased by one of her many private kitchen assistants at an organic food market in West L.A.) Pobrecita. Everyone on the planet except for rail-thin Paltrow seems to have understood the hilarity of Hollywood’s most famous detox dieter -- whose calorie intake rivals an earthworm’s -- pretending to have the sads over her SNAP menu: seven limes, a tomato, one head of garlic, a bunch of scallions, bags of brown rice, black beans and peas, a package of corn tortillas, one avocado, a yam, an ear of corn, a dozen eggs, and bunches of kale, lettuce and cilantro. Pepper Potts’ public relations stunt inspired global derision from the hoi polloi of all political persuasions. Lefties excoriated the privileged starlet for making a mockery of genuine anti-hunger efforts. Righties debunked her dubious statistics low-balling SNAP benefits for a family of four. And moms and dads across America helpfully offered cost-cutting grocery lists of their own. “A 20-pound bag of rice, a few bags of various kinds of dried beans, supplemented with some chicken breast ($1.99/pound on sale at my local supermarket), and she’s all set,” one savvy shopper wrote.

Hillary Clinton’s Joyless Ride

You can never know what that wacky Hillary Clinton will do next. At the outset of her latby Rich Lowry est presidential Syndicated Columnist campaign, she decided to drive from New York to Iowa for her first campaign stop. Or, to be more precise, she decided to be driven to Iowa by a Secret Service agent as part of a three-car caravan in keeping with her security needs. For a former first lady and global celebrity, this is traveling light and spontaneous -- let’s load up the Secret Service detail and blow this joint. Her campaign referred to her vehicle as “her Scooby van,” evoking the lovable madcap crew of the cartoon series. This could be considered a cute little affectation, until you realize that she campaigned in a van in her 2000 See malkin on 26 Senate race, and for the same

reason: to appear more relatable (the Secret Service reportedly referred to that vehicle, too, as the Scooby-Doo van). Hillary Clinton has been reintroducing herself to the public for so long that even her manufactured stabs at authenticity aren’t entirely new. Of course, the image she is trying to live down is the Hillary of the “Saturday Night Live” sketches, with her gratingly insincere laugh and her cringeinducing blatant calculations. It is her curse as a politician of stamina and determination, but not of natural grace, that her maneuvers to reveal her “real” self always feel like obvious maneuvers. To say that she lacks the light touch is almost as much of an understatement as saying her husband is not a monk. Hillary’s worst moments on her book tour last year were her exaggerations, from the heights of her power, fame and wealth, of See lowry on 28

Vietnam Debacle 1975--Imagine a Different Ending UNITED NATIONS - It’s been forty years since the wars in Indochina ended and the curtain dropped ushering in a by John J. Metzler new period of Syndicated Columnist darkness for the people of Vietnam and Cambodia. Four long decades since the stunning imagery of North Vietnamese tanks smashing through the gates of Saigon’s Doc Lap Independence palace seizing the South Vietnamese capital, ending the decades long war, and bringing forcible reunification by the communists to the divided nation. For America the politically divisive conflict was over, the page turned, and the book shelved. For the Vietnamese, and even more so for the beleaguered Cambodians, a new level of hell was about to begin in 1975. Many people know the narrative which has now become fuzzy or bypassed by the march of time. American troops had already been withdrawn from South Vietnam by 1973 and thus the devastating defeat of the Saigon government by a massive North Vietnamese conventional offensive between February and April, was not as many glibly claim, a defeat of U.S. forces. Yet it posed a grim geopolitical setback for the USA. But let me digress from events to imagine for a moment what could

have happened, and may have transpired if the North Vietnamese had abided by the U.S. negotiated Paris Peace agreements in 1973 which should have stopped the military conflict, ensured a ceasefire, and allowed South Vietnam’s survival. Consider another divided nation, Korea to see my thesis. Here too a historic nation was arbitrarily divided when Dean Rusk drew the line at the 38th parallel at the end of WWII. North and South Korea, which had endured Japanese colonialism, were now free but separated by two antagonistic governments. After the horrors of the Korean War (1950-1953), the tenuous peace held. Both the communist North and free South Korean states developed separately. But here’s the point; a rising Phoenix of economic development and prosperity took hold in South Korea through the 1960’s and 1970’s . South Korea successfully hosted the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and had emerged as an East Asian tiger economy. Political democratization had taken root by the late 1980’s and has flourished ever since. So here’s my question. Viewing the South Vietnam of 1975, what if both North and South Vietnam developed separately economically, with political antagonism but not conflict? A bit like West and East Germany or Mainland China and Taiwan? By 1975, and despite the ongoing conflict, South Vietnam was still

ahead of the North. As long as the Saigon government could develop its socio/economic base free from both Viet Cong insurgency and the threat of a large scale conventional North Vietnamese onslaught, something similar to South Ko-

rea’s post-1953 economic revival could have happened. Though South Vietnam’s economy was weak in the aftermath of years of war, with a cease-fire which held, and supported by a

The New Inquisition How long will this country remain free? Probably only as long as the American people value their freedom enough to defend it. But how many by Thomas Sowell people today Syndicated Columnist can stop looking at their electronic devices long enough to even think about such things? Meanwhile, attempts to shut down people whose free speech interferes with other people’s political agendas go on, with remarkably little notice, much less outrage. The Internal Revenue Service’s targeting the tax-exempt status of conservative groups is just one of these attempts to fight political battles by shutting up the opposition, rather than answering them. Another insidious attempt to silence voices that dissent from current politically correct crusades is targeting scientists who do not agree with the “global warming” scenario. Congressman Raul Grijalva has been writing universities, demanding financial records showing who is financing the research of dissenting scientists, and demanding their internal communications as well. Mr. Grijalva says that financial disclosure needs to be part of the public’s “right to know” who is financing those who express different views. He is not the only politician pushing the idea that scientists who do not march in lockstep with what is called the “consensus” on man-made global warming could be just hired guns for businesses resisting government regulations. Senator Edward Markey has been sending letters to fossil-fuel companies, ask-

ing them to hand over details of their financial ties to critics of the “consensus.” The head of the National Academy of Sciences has chimed in, saying: “Scientists must disclose their sources of financial support to continue to enjoy societal trust and the respect of fellow scientists.” This is too clever by half. It sounds as if this government bureaucrat is trying to help the dissenting scientists enjoy trust and respect -- as if these scientists cannot decide for themselves whether they consider such a practice necessary or desirable. The idea that you can tell whether a scientist -- or anybody else -is “objective” by who is financing that scientist’s research is nonsense. There is money available on many sides of many issues, so no matter what the researcher concludes, there will usually be somebody to financially support those conclusions. Some of us are old enough to remember when this kind of game was played by Southern segregationist politicians trying to hamstring civil rights organizations like the NAACP by pressuring them to reveal who was contributing money to them. Such revelations would of course then subject NAACP supporters to all sorts of retaliations, and dry up contributions. The public’s “right to know” has often been invoked in attempts to intimidate potential supporters of ideas that the inquisitors want to silence. But have you heard of any groundswell of public demand to know who is financing what research? Science is not about “consensus” but facts. Not only were some physicists not initially convinced by Einstein’s theory of relativity, Einstein himself said See Sowell on 26

Hummingbird Feeder by Day .... NEW

Winged Jewels

by Steve White Contributing Writer

Everyone loves the hummingbird. It is a marvel of nature. In the wild, the hummingbirds have two major sources of food: flower nectar and small insects, such as gnats and spiders, which provide protein. In fact, you could classify the hummingbird as a carnivorous bird. It only uses the nectar to provide the energy necessary to hunt insects. They pick their insects from flowers or grab them out of the air as they dart around looking for nectar. Hummingbirds will readily use a nectar feeder, and since most of the daylight hours are devoted to finding nectar, you really should have one or more of these specially designed feeders in your yard. There are two basic feeder styles: saucer and vacuum. The latter comes in a wide range of capacities, materials and designs, and is easily hung from a tree limb or pole. It also can be mounted directly to the outside of a window. Saucers are basin feeders covered by a lid with several feeding ports. The lids lift completely off for easy cleaning. When you shop for a new hummingbird feeder, here are some useful tips: Bees and ants are attracted to the same sugarwater mixture as hummingbirds, creating a nuisance to feeding birds. In fact, when ants craw into the nectar and die, they release formic acid, fouling the solution. Hummingbirds will taste this and leave your feeder. Stop

ants by putting a barrier, such as a water-filled device called an ant cup, between the ants and nectar. Bees and wasps have short mouthparts, so bee guards over the end of the feeding tubes interfere with their reach. Choose a feeder that matches the number of hummingbirds available to feed in your area. In New England, it is more appropriate to have many, small capacity feeders than one large feeder. East of the Mississippi River, there is only one hummingbird species, the ruby-throated. This bird is extremely territorial and will refuse a spot on a feeder for any other ruby-throated hummingbird, even its mate. Hummingbird feeders usually are made of plastic or a combination of glass and plastic, the variable being the nectar container. Glass containers are more durable and scratch resistant, but plastic won’t shatter if it hits the floor. You will be doing lots of filling and cleaning, so make sure you can take the feeder apart easily to reach all parts to scrub thoroughly. Hummers do not find dirty feeders appealing, and old nectar can be dangerous to their health. Fill the feeder with a solution of one part sugar to four parts of water, a ratio that approximates the sugar content in many flowers favored by hummingbirds. Never use honey or artificial sweeteners in place of sugar. It is not necessary to add red food coloring because there is sufficient red on most feeders to attract the bird’s attention. Place different hummingbird feeders out of view of each other, increasing your odds for more of these winged jewels. Enjoy your birds

With the “TAKE A SEAT CAMPAIGN,” the Friends seek to raise $40,500 in private funds to purchase 200 chairs and balcony seating. Funds for seating for the Great Hall are not included in the building rehabilitation budget. and sturdiness and can be stacked when not in use. The goal of the “TAKE A SEAT CAMPAIGN” is to raise funds by early summer in order to have the 200 chairs and balcony benches manufactured, delivered and installed in time for the re-opening of Town Hall. FRM Scandal- If SB 155 Doesn’t Pass – Where Do the Victims Go? Those frequent readers of this column know well my feelings toward the State of NH government agencies by Niel Young Advocates Columnist that misused their positions. It is my honor to bring parts of the testimony in favor of SB 155 from former Senate President Peter Bragdon. Here is most of that letter of support for SB 155: “I write to you in support of SB 155, a bill establishing a recovery fund for the victims of the Financial Resources Mortgage (FRM) fraud. This is an issue for which I sponsored legislation my final term in the state Senate, and an issue in which I still believe strongly. “Victims of the FRM fraud have been portrayed as knowing investors in a Ponzi scheme. That is incorrect. They were, in fact, lenders on various real estate projects, with the loans secured by mortgages on the property. It is important to note that the FRM victims did not lend money to FRM itself. Instead, FRM connected lenders with borrowers, typically developers for short-term loans secured by recorded mortgages. “When FRM collapsed, the NH Banking Department of Justice forced the company into bankruptcy, and the trustee forced the victims to relinquish their mortgages or risk being treated as principals in the FRM fraud. This rash decision by state regulators made it impossible for most FRM victims to recover their money. One of two FRM victims fought the bankruptcy and won after a prolonged and costly legal battle. The ruling came too late for the vast majority of the victims, however,

who had been coerced into signing settlements. “But when a person suffers a financial loss at the hands of a state-licensed and state-regulated entity that is in clear violation of state laws and rules and the regulating agency fails to act on those violations, and in fact tells people inquiring that the company is fine, then I think we’ve crossed the line where state recovery assistance should at least be considered. “As the Department of Justice (DOJ) has already conceded, the DOJ clearly failed in their client counseling obligations (to other state agencies) relative to FRM.” The DOJ was provided with information about FRM’s criminal activities by one of their own former attorneys and no significant action was taken. These were “significant” opportunities lost by DOJ and a serious failure of the department.” “The overall financial health of FRM was never adequately analyzed by the NHBD.” FRM was examined by the NHBD seven times over the 9 years prior to its collapse. “During these seven examinations, FRM was cited for over 70 violations.” More than once during these examinations, FRM, was not even able to produce a balance sheet or income statement, but yet they were allowed to stay in business and prey upon NH citizens. Here we have a situation where a regulated entity (FRM), with numerous violations, that could not even produce a balance sheet or income statement to its regulator (THE NH Banking Department), and was working with an unregistered service company (CL&M) that the NH Banking Department knew existed (and I believe was located in the same building), but did not investi-

gate, was allowed to continue operations and eventually morph, with CL&M’s assistance, into a massive criminal enterprise. The SECOND was done when the state regulators, who had been asleep at the switch for years, finally woke up and rashly decided to hand things over to federal bankruptcy officials, who then victimized the FRM lenders a second time by taking away their legitimate mortgages, through coercion. Sen. Bragdon quoted NH Sec. of State Bill Gardner in this portion of his letter. ******** More nonsense from the Government Indoctrination Centers: “Are you transgender? Vermont Agency of Education wants to know By Bruce Parker Vermont Watchdog: As the governor and Legislature weigh cuts to close a $113 million budget gap, the Vermont Agency of Education is spending more than $23,000 to find out if Vermont school kids as young as 10 are transgender, among other things. “The Vermont School Climate Survey, which was developed over the past few months at the request of Education Secretary Rebecca Holcombe, seeks to help school administrators know more about the student learning environment. “The online survey is nearing completion in 12 pilot schools and uses funds from the High School Completion Program. Based on nearly 50 questions put to students, researchers hope to gather data on bullying, cyberbullying, sexual identities, race and even guns from children as young as 10 years of age.” And the beat goes on. How many surveys must be done? What specifically are they looking for, and do they ever have a plan to fix what needs fixing?

been parked overnight. But we didn’t see anyone outside and we didn’t see any fresh tracks in the snow as we headed up the trail. We decided we would ski the Alexandria Ski Trail first. We skinned up the Holt-Clark Cutoff and Clark hiking trails all the way to the Warden’s Cabin. We were only 2/10ths of a mile from Cardigan’s summit but the open ledges were still covered with ice and it didn’t seem worth the risk and effort to go any higher. The early morning wind was chilly and we used the cabin as a wind block while we changed our clothes and gear. Down the trail we went on the firm snow and we broke

During the same year that the ski trails were being cut on Mount Cardigan, the Appalachian Mountain Club purchased 500 acres of land and named it the Cardigan Ski Reservation. Today more than 1,200 acres make up the Cardigan Reservation and it has been the home to the AMC’s Cardigan Lodge for more than 80 years. The Cardigan Lodge offers many summer recreation opportunities too, learn more at the AMC’s website at Outdoors.org.

Winter trails crisscross the east side of Mount Cardigan through open woods. There are more than 50 miles of hiking trails on Mount Cardigan in Orange, NH. through a thin ice crust as we turned our boards. The turns and steep drops

were fun. Becca made quick round turns on her snowboard. We made nice figure 8 tracks in the middle of the trail. The snow got softer as we reached the end of the Alexandria and the beginning of the Kimball Ski Trails. Here we put back on our skins and climbed to the high point of the Kimball Ski Trail. This trail is nice for the less experienced. The climbs up and the ride down are gentler, not steep and have a straighter line. Happily we slid down over the perfect spring snow and we were back at down in no time. The sunny pasture at the bottom of Duke’s Ski Trail was a good place to take a rest and grab a bite to eat. People were out and about now and we saw fresh tracks and a few people heading up the See patenaude on 15

trail from where we just came down. At one time there was a rope-tow here at Duke’s Pasture and parts of the contraption can be seen rusting away up on side of the ski trail. Duke’s Ski Trail is not as steep and curvy as the Alexandria Ski Trail but it has splendid old school character. You can easily imagine using long wood skis and wearing short leather boots while having a joyous time bopping down this ski run. By mid morning the sun was shining brightly and we stripped down to our short sleeve shirts. Amazing how quickly the day can warm up. We passed a few people making their way up the trail and then

two young men came skiing down past us. This was the biggest crowd we encountered the entire morning. Duke’s tops out on the open ledges just below the summit of Firescrew. We enjoyed a clear grand vista of the many surrounding mountains. The trip back down seemed to zip by too quickly. We had fun turning in the soft granular snow. Up high there was more than a foot of snow but down below the snow was thin on Duke’s Pasture. By the end of the day the bare spots would grow large and it wouldn’t be long before it would all be melted away. To round out our adventure we decided to head back up the Kimball

(BPT) - Spring is cleaning season. You’ve opened the curtains to let in the sunshine, and every cleaning product you have in the house is primed and ready for action. The whole family has been enlisted to help. The youngest is in charge of wiping all the cobwebs off the floorboards. You have the older children giving the windows a good scrubbing, and your partner is assigned to hit all the hard-to-reach spots with a duster and vacuum hose. No room, piece of furniture or square

inch of the house will be spared! The idea behind spring cleaning is to make your home healthier. You’re removing the dirt, dander and dust particles that have accumulated over the winter months, as well as organizing everything for a more efficient lifestyle. But it can be easy to forget that cleaning the air is just as important as the rest of the house. Indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports. And did you know

that many of the cleaning supplies that will make your floors, windows and furniture sparkle in the spring sunlight can actually pollute your indoor air? Air quality is very important for homeowners. In fact, 34 percent of Americans are concerned about the air quality in their homes, according to a 2014 study by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Additionally, some moms have to worry about health issues like asthma and allergies within See home on 21

DEAR TRAVIS: I’ve got great news for you. You can build these desktops in no time at all, and I can bring them in under budget as long as you need no more than 16 feet of total length for both desktops. Believe me, 16 feet of desktop is quite a bit. The first thing to realize when you’re building a desk to work at is the height above the finished floor. This is critical if you’re using standard chairs that are not adjustable with respect to height. Most tables that you eat at have a finished height above the floor of 29 to 30 inches. This

DEAR TIM: I need to build two cheap desktops. I’m lucky in that I have small cabinets that the top can rest on. One top is for my man cave and the other one is for a hobby and craft center for my wife and young kids. I’m looking for durability, affordability, ease of construction and good looks. I have limited skills and tools. Can I do this for less than $100? If you can offer a solution, I’d be most grateful. --Travis S., Morgan Hill, Calif.

This desktop was built in one hour with one sheet of plywood and two pieces of thin molding. works great for adults, but not so well for young children. You may want to keep this in mind as you build the desktop for your hobby and craft center. If I were you, I’d consider designing a simple desk or workstation where the top can be raised by putting blocking under the supports as your young children grow. Just keep that in mind. I’ve had huge success in the past by using 4-foot by 8-foot sheets of 3/4inch thick plywood as a desktop. If you cut a piece of plywood like this in half lengthwise, you end up with two pieces of wood that are 24 inches wide by 8 feet long. My favorite plywood for a project like this is A/C fir. Fir is a somewhat tough wood species and the letters A and C stand

design, build or remodel your dream home

for what each side of the plywood looks like. You’ll rarely, if ever, find this product at a home center. You’ll need to visit a local old-fashioned lumberyard for great plywood like this. Believe me, once you make a trip to the lumberyard, it may become your favorite place to get products! The A surface of the plywood will look almost like a gorgeous piece of furniture, with no knots or major defects. The C surface, which will form the underside of your desktop, will have some shallow knotholes and other defects. I almost always make my desktops 24 inches deep. This depth provides ample space for larger desktop computers and just about anything you’d put on a desk. It’s also a perfect depth for a craft or See builder on 23

the family. Clean indoor air is very important for helping to prevent exposure to triggers like irritants and allergens for children and adults who suffer from these conditions. For those families without these health concerns, clean indoor air should still be a part of the campaign to help your family live as healthily as possible. The study found that more than half of Americans put a least a moderate effort into improving the quality of their indoor air. Yet many cleaning products are loaded with chemicals to help them sanitize or disinfect. These chemicals might be good for industrial cleaning, but unfortunately, they often aren’t so great for indoor air quality at home. AAFA reviews and certifies household cleaning products like vacuums and cleaning solutions that are more suitable for people with asthma and allergies, as well as anyone wanting to promote healthy and clean indoor air in their home. builder from 19

hobby workspace, in my opinion, because you can put 8-inch-wide shelves along the back edge of the desktop for supplies and still have abundant workspace for most projects. You only need a circular saw to make the needed cuts in the plywood. Be sure you use a sharp blade and always make your cuts with the A side of the plywood facing the ground. This minimizes splintering of the finished side of the desktops when you cut 90 degrees across the grain of the plywood. You need to plan your cuts so that you end up with a factory edge of the plywood facing out where you’ll sit at the desktop. It’s very hard to cut a straight line using a hand-held circular saw without fancy clamps and straightedges to guide the saw. I always cover the unattractive edge of the plywood with thin strips of solid wood molding. Most old-fashioned lumberyards will stock a piece of wood that is as wide as the plywood is thick. This wood strip will only be 1/4-inch thick and it is available in lengths up to 16 feet long. I always use regular yellow carpenter’s glue and small 1 1/4-inch finish nails to attach this strip of wood to the plywood edge. Once you have the desktop built and the wood strip on the edges, then you just need to sand it with medium-grit sandpaper and finish it. You can stain the plywood if you want a rich color, or you can just urethane it with a clear finish if you want a light look. You can also paint the plywood if that’s the style you want. If you do paint it, I’d then add two coats of clear waterbased urethane to protect the softer painted film. If you just decide to urethane the bare plywood

and you use a water-based urethane that dries within 90 minutes, you should sand the desktop again before you add the second coat of urethane. The water in the urethane will raise the grain of the wood and it will feel rough. This roughness sands down easily and your second coat of urethane will be quite smooth. When you shop for the plywood, be sure to get pieces that are nice and flat. Don’t transport the plywood in the rain or allow it to get wet, as it can develop a warp to it so your desktop may not be as flat as it could be. You’ll be stunned how strong this plywood desktop will be. It can stand abuse and it can be modified or moved in seconds. That’s one of the things I like best about these modular desktops; you can change what you have in just minutes. You can’t do that with a traditional desk that has the top and base as one complete unit. If you’re wondering how long a desktop like this can last, let me share with you that I’ve had one in heavy daily use for over 15 years and it looks like the day I built it. You can get other finish-grade plywood that has hardwood veneer if you desire a very upscale look. You can also get wood species like birch that has very little grain to it and is very smooth. Spend some time at the lumberyard and see what they stock! Need an answer? All of Tim’s past columns are archived for free at www. AsktheBuilder.com. Alsteadder Ale is a very easy drinking ale named after the town the brewery resides in. Tim dedicated this brew to the folks of the town that helped him throughout the process of opening. He believes in keeping it simple and this beer is an example of his thinking. It is not overly complex, but just a great ale to relax with and contemplate the day. The golden haze of Alsteadder Ale lets the imbiber know they are in for a treat. At 4.2% ABV it is not overpowering by any means but has a smooth drinkability that will keep you coming back. A clean white head can be seen on an uninhibited pour into a pint glass with great retention. At first sip, there is a distinct balance that occurs between malt and

Hersbrucker hops. The end notes are a bit citrusy. It rewards with clean and slightly malty mouthfeel. Beer Advocate has not yet rated this beer, but will soon. It is worth noting and a wise purchase. Tim self-distributes all of his wonderful creations throughout the state and can be purchased at Casen-Keg in Meredith. Look for Alsteadder and the rest of Tim’s offerings so you too can appreciate the love that goes into his beers! Jim MacMillan is the owner of WonByOne Design of Meredith, NH, and is an avid imbiber of craft brews and a home brewer as well. Send him your recommendations and brew news to wickedbrews@weirs. com.

PET OF THE WEEK

her own economic struggles. Negotiating the contrast between her middleclass message and her longtime upper-1-percent lifestyle would challenge an even more gifted politician. Driving is something everyday Americans do, well, every day; Hillary hasn’t driven, not even a Scooby-Doo van, in 20 years. Perhaps Hillary can pull this off. It is easier to be a wealthy champion of the downtrodden as a Democrat. Consider Franklin Delano Roosevelt. But, with enough political ham-fistedness, it’s entirely possible to come off as an out-of-touch phony. Just ask John Kerry. Hillary is far closer to the leaden Kerry or Al Gore than she is to her husband or Barack Obama. As potentially the first woman to be elected president, of course, she has “history on her side.

Kerry and Gore didn’t. But it’s not clear that this will work for her as powerfully as it did for Obama. His history-making first wasn’t just another item on his resume. It reinforced his case that America needed a thoroughgoing break with the politics of the past. Hillary will have many strengths -- an electoral map that tilts toward the Democrats, a Republican Party that is still suffering a hangover from the Bush years, prodigious fundraising. But her planned road trip to the White House, even if she manages to get to her destination, will be more a grim forced march than a joyful excursion. Its motto might as well be: Oh, the fun we will pretend to have! Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.

“Bixby

Age: 5 months Sex: Neutered Male Breed: Great Dane / American Pit Bull

BIXBY is just 5 months old and came to CVHS from an overcrowded shelter. Still a young puppy, he is full of energy and loves to play. He would do best with someone who will take the time to teach him is basic manners. He has done well with dogs he has met at the shelter but will likely chase cats. It is recommended he go to a home with older children as he is still a jumpy and mouth puppy who might be too overwhelming for younger kids.

Guitarist Johnny A. At Rochester Opera House Sat. May 16th at 8pm NH’s Wooden Eye Opens The Show

With a guitar that sings, Johnny A. appears in concert at the Rochester Opera House on Saturday, May 16 at 8pm (Doors 7pm). With a blend of styles from rock to jazz to blues mixed with a masterful use of the guitar’s whammy bar, Johnny A. is one of the finest contemporary guitarists. Johnny played with many renowned musicians including Mingo Lewis (Santana), Doug Clifford (Creedence Clearwater Revival) and Bobby Whitlock (Derek and the Dominos), before his seven year stint as guitarist and musical director with The J. Geils Band front man Peter Wolf. In 2010, Johnny received the Boston Music Award for Blues Artist of the Year. In addition to producing and mixing his recent release Driven, Johnny also plays all the instruments on the album. Portsmouth-based Wooden Eye opens with their unique mix of blues, rock and roll, folk and country that create an Americana sound that is their trademark. The band is Bob Halperin on guitar, mandolin, vocals and diddley bow, Dan Maclellan on bass, Mike “Bullfrog” Rogers on harp and vocals and Joe Rogers on drums. Tickets are $18 and $22 and can be reserved online at Rochester Opera House.com or call/stop by the box office (603) 335-1992, M/W/F from 10-5 and two hours before the show. Cash bar. Patrons under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This show is sponsored by TD Bank, Eastern Propane and Oil, Foster’s Daily Democrat, Shaheen and Gordon, P.A. and Norman Vetter Foundations. The Rochester Opera House is located in City Hall, 31 Wakefield Street, Rochester NH. The season continues with the Corvettes on 5/30.
