Creating Zombies In New Hampshire by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

“Somewhere at the bottom of an apocalyptic sea, a band of submariners seek to piece together the remains of a broken world. Most of the crew is suffering from a deadly virus that, for the moment, has been held in stasis through the aid of a vaccine. Everyone aboard wonders if the once cannibalistic nature of the men will return should their bodies become immune to treatment. For now they watch, they wait and they all serve loyally on board Zombie Sub 920.”

No, it’s not the latest big budget, sci-fi thriller coming soon to a theatre near you, but the creation of Tilton, NH. comic book artist Michael Mitchell, now working on the sixth issue in his successful comic book series, Zombie Sub 920, of which Mitchell is the total creative team. In this day of computers doing everything graphically, Mitchell uses his unique talent to create his comic books the “old fashioned” way, with pencil, pen and water color. From outline, to self-inking, to self-lettering, to self-coloring,

— OFF THE SHELF — Delightfully Peculiar by Debby Montague Book Reviewer

Christopher Fowler’s Bryant & May – Peculiar Crimes Unit Mysteries “Now Oswald Finch was gone, and soon they too would pass into oblivion, to be faintly recalled as members of the old school of police work, a pair of characters, representatives of a classic style of investigation that had since passed into obsolescence.” It’s impossible for me to let a day go by without reading. Not reading would be like not brushing my teeth or not kis s i n g my husband goodbye in the morning. I couldn’t do it. Sometimes the stress or the duties of the day force my reading to be done by ear alone, driving to work listening to audible books, and that is how I met Arthur Bryant and John May, two of London’s finest fictional detectives and, at least in the view of their superiors, two of the most troublesome. Having listened to Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe mysteries so many times I can practically recite along with the narrator, binging on James R. Benn’s Billy Boyle novels, and being surprised by joy and sorrow in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache books, I decided it was time to risk branching out. I wandered around the Internet looking for something new and came across Christopher Fowler’s Bryant & May series. A few clicks and there was Full Dark House embedded on a flash drive, plugged into my car and off I went on a great adventure. After listening to a few cases

in the car I realized that wasn’t enough so I loaded the next couple onto my Nook. Still not enough - if a book is good it deserves shelf space and reading the old fashioned way so I supplemented the Audible and the Nook with the real deal. I had to have the whole series on my shelf so I bought some used, some new,

some paperbacks, some hard covers and rushed to catch up. The Peculiar Crimes Unit was formed during World War II “to investigate cases that could cause national scandal or public unrest,” and Arthur Bryant and John May, senior detectives, have been with the PCU since its inception. Both are brilliant detectives though different in their approach. Bryant tends to look to the past for answers or to his friends – white witches, retired professors, historians, while John May has embraced the modern approach utilizing and trusting to the new technolo-

gies available for crime solution. Arthur Bryant is careless in his appearance and life style, always enfolded in an old overcoat, his neck wrapped in a ratty old scarf, sneaking a smoke from his pipe and popping boiled sweets on a regular basis. John May is a dapper dresser, perhaps a bit vain, and careful of his health. Arthur, occasionally pursued by women of a certain age, is true to the fiancée who drowned in the Thames while John May, the divorcee is quite the ladies’ man. The rest of the PCU staff is as distinct from the usual cop as Bryant and May. Detective Sergeant Janice Longbright dresses like an old film star. Dan Banbury, the crime scene specialist, is devoted to modern crime investigation. Colin Bimsley, is a hardworking detective occasionally slowed down by his dyspraxia and dying for a date with his routine partner, Meera Mangeshkar. Meera is an angry young cop, but one who is just as eager to solve the backlist or a new horrendous crime as the rest of the unit, though she’s not willing to make a date with Colin to forward any solutions. Jack Renfield is a relatively new member of the unit, and no one is quite sure that he isn’t a spy for the Met. Giles Kershaw, Forensic Pathologist is new, young and eager to prove himself. And Raymond Land, Acting Unit Chief, has been the acting chief trying to get See montague on 38

To The Editor: Members of the New Hampshire House of Representatives and Senate Here we go again. When will legislators overhaul the state so every two years families do not have to parade before committees to explain why services for family members with developmental disabilities are crucial to daily life, not luxuries? Shame on the House of Representatives for trying to eviscerate the state. I hope the Senate realizes the damage the House budget will cause. Susan Michaeli Gunther Gilford, NH.

To The Editor: World War II is a tragic and an unforgettable event in world history. The extermination of six (6) million Jews as well as the deaths of millions more around the world can be laid at the doorstep of Hitler’s aggression and European leaders’ appeasement to his land grabs. The contemporary political make-up of the Middle East is a direct result of the aftermath of WWII Europe. Israel was created in 1947–1948 out of the British Palestinian Mandate. The United Nations with Allied support enabled the creation of the Israeli state. Over the following decades, the U.S. has reaffirmed its support of the

Our Story

existence of Israel in the unstable, yet strategically important, part of the world known as the Middle East. Concurrently, Israel has been vigilant and militarily prepared. In 1967, Egypt attacked Israel. Israel responded in a conflict lasting only 6–days, hence the name “The Six–Day War.â€? The Israeli air force decimated the air and ground forces of Egypt, and Israel overtook control of the Sinai Peninsula. Loss of control of the Sinai Peninsula by Egypt meant that Israel would now control the allimportant Suez Canal, a strategic passageway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, and Israel would stand to collect millions of dollars in tolls from the ships traversing this strategic waterway. This loss of currency would have been staggering to the Egyptian economy. Egypt sued for peace with Israel, demanding the return of the Sinai to Egyptian hands. Israel agreed‌with Egyptian recognition of the existence of the country of Israel. Egypt agreed! Egypt and Israel haven’t fought a war since 1967! Iran should be held to similar high standards of conduct and diplomacy. Any “dealâ€? with Iran over its nuclear program and the lifting of economic sanctions should, first and foremost, require Iran’s recognition of Israel as a state entity!

Setting Record Straight To The Editor: I’d like to take this opportunity to respond to a letter to the editor last week by Paula Trombi of Meredith. To set the record straight, the bottom line is this, Governor Hassan is trying to raid nursing home and home health care agency funds that were promised and budgeted in 2014/2015. The Governor signed the budget into law –it is the law, and the Governor is now trying to ignore it. By the Governor’s actions, she will cause the loss of $14 million to New Hampshire private and county nursing homes and home health agencies. ($7 million in state funds and $7 million in federal funds.) While it is true Sen. Forrester voted in the 2010/11 budget to reduce funding to nursing homes, it was because there was an $800 million deficit facing the state—a deficit created by the Democrats over-spending. Our law requires a balanced budget and Republicans were faced with difficult choices to meet the law’s requirement. However, in the 2014/15 budget, even though Governor Hassan tried to continue cuts to nursing homes, the Senate Republicans restored funding AND put in a budget footnote to tell the Governor she could not use those funds for any other purpose. Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Good Television?

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

As you know, community public television (aka local access) is one of the most misunderstood forms of entertainment, basically because it is hard to understand what is being said on many of the programs. If you have ever tuned into a selectman or city council meeting (which is usually their prime time entertainment schedule) you might understand this. These meetings are boring enough in person but watching them on TV, without being able to understand what is being said most of the time is, understandably, torturous. Even on those rare occasions that you can understand what is being said, what is being discussed is usually about something incredibly tedious or something that, even though you can understand what is being said, still makes no sense whatsoever. Having these meetings broadcast is part of why local access came into being in the first place and it seems that those who are running things feel obligated to continue to air them. The original thought was that maybe there were people who, for whatever reasons, couldn’t attend the meetings but would relish the opportunity to still be able to watch them, even if they couldn’t understand what was being said half the time. A small percentage of those who watch these public meetings on local

access do it because they feel a sense of service to their community by tuning in. How else can they know what decisions are facing their everyday lives in their communities. They realize they need to be a part of what is happening in their city or town, even if they can’t understand most of what the heck is being discussed. The rest watch - and this is still a very small percentage -because they want to catch their local selectman or neighbor saying something really dumb, which they hope they will be able to understand at the time it is being said. Then they will have something to talk about with everyone else in town, many who might actually appreciate being told about the dumb comment because they watched the meeting themselves but, of course, didn’t hear it clearly. Whichever one of the above two categories you fall into, you will still watch the local city council and selectman meetings on local access with that unspoken hope that you will witness one of those meltdowns by either a local resident or even a board member that makes for the lead story on all of the local TV news channels the next day. These are few and far between, but there is no better satisfaction than to have seen it as it happened so, the next day, when you are approached by a friend who asks if you heard about the meltdown, you can proudly say: “Heard about it? I saw the whole thing live and then proudly go into your own personal recounting of how the momentous events developed. If you are lucky enough to have caught one of the more significant meltdowns live, the buzz from it alone can give you enough prestige in the local gossip

circles for at least a couple of days if you plan your trips outside and possible interactions with others wisely over that time frame so as not to waste it all in one day. Holding out hope that someone will do something incredibly stupid at one of these televised meetings isn’t going to be enough to keep public access a viable choice for local viewers. They are going to need to make some serious changes to compete in this world of hundreds of channels. They will need to inject some better forms of entertainment into the mix to keep people tuning in as well as attracting new viewers. It doesn’t seem likely that they will be getting away from the selectman and city council meetings, so maybe there could be a few changes to add to them to spice things up a bit. Maybe have the members of the council or board sit in different chairs each meeting, just to keep the viewers on their toes. Have September be funny hat meeting month. Have a guest celebrity board member every once in awhile. Have a secret word of the day, printed in the local newspapers and whenever it is said by a board or council member, the sixth viewer to call in wins a gift certificate to a local restaurant. Have commercials (goodness knows they would have to be more entertaining). Have stud en ts from the technical college produce a reenactment of the meetings using computer graphics and a music soundtrack. Or maybe just a better sound system. Is that asking too much?

Bob Menendez’s 36DD Visa Program America has an alphabet soup of visa programs for foreigners to choose from: B-1 for business visitors, B-2 for tourists, EB-5 for by Michelle Malkin investors, F-1 Syndicated Columnist for students, and so on. All are overwhelmed, loosely monitored and riddled with fraud and corruption. According to the recently unsealed federal indictment against him, sleazy Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., took it upon himself to add his own very special, crooked path to the U.S. Call it the 36DD Visa. The New York Post recounted this weekend how Menendez and his staff pressured the State Department to expedite the foreign tourist and student visa approval processes for a bevy of buxom foreign beauties. One of them, Brazilian actress and nudie model Juliana Lopes Leite (a.k.a. “Girlfriend 1”), had her F-1 student visa application moved to the top of the Mount Everest-high heap in 2008 as a favor to Menendez’s now-indicted donor pal and accused Medicare fraudster Salomon Melgen. A senior Menendez staffer emailed a State Department staffer that Girlfriend 1 “has her visa application appointment in Brasilia, Brazil, tomorrow. ... Sen. Menendez would like to advocate unconditionally for Dr. Melgen and encourage careful consideration of (Girlfriend 1)’s visa application.” Oba! “The State Department responded within hours, and the woman got her visa the following day,” the Post reported. Sugar

daddy Melgen set up a shady nonprofit to help fund Lopes Leite’s education, according to the indictment. The IRS-approved “foundation” for “helping with the educational needs of disadvantaged persons” also subsidized college costs for a second woman “romantically linked to Menendez.” Here’s my question: Menendez played visa-fixer in 2008. Lopes Leite graduated with a law degree from the University of Miami in 2010, but spent most of her time jet-setting around the world with Melgen. According to the Post, she is still here and now practicing law in Miami -- seven years after obtaining her 36DD visa. Why and how is she still here? The F-1 is supposed to be a temporary visa. Applicants have to prove to consular officials that they plan to go back home after their studies as a condition of getting into our country and availing themselves of our educational system. The deal was that they’d gain a positive attitude about the U.S. and serve as ambassadors of our values and principles when they returned to their native lands. Aside from the extreme abuse and corruption involved in the Menendez scheme, this case spotlights the wider everyday systemic failures to enforce the original intent and rules of the program. Nearly 500,000 F-1 foreign students come to the U.S. every year. Despite repeated warning flags involving foreign students on F-1 visas who slipped through the cracks -- the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 9/11 plot, the Times Square bombing plot, the Boston Marathon bombing -- Washington refuses to hit the pause button and get the pro-

Liberty and Life – Time for a Common Sense Debate

Most of you know my voting and public speaking record has been one of supporting Conservative principles. As President of by Jane Cormier NHRTL, I have been gifted with Hooksett, NH. the opportunity to look at Life in a deeper and more complete way. I have learned there is much disinformation and fear within this debate and being a great believer in open and deliberate discussion, I find this fact very unfortunate. I cannot tell you how many times I hear the phrase, “well personally, I am pro-life but professionally I am pro-choice.” I don’t know what is worse about this stance. The weakness within the Pro-Life stance in general, or the fact that a person’s principles are so fragile as to fall away under the littlest pressure. Just this weekend a prominent See malkin on 21 “conservative” politician and I had

this debate. If an avowed “conservative” cannot understand the basic human right to LIFE – TO LIVE - how can they possibly profess to a principled message toward the values inherent within Conservatism? Now, I know many don’t like to engage in the topic of Life. But, I would like to submit that every time we back away or hide from taking the opportunity to proclaim our support for LIFE, we not only diminish the Life message, we are tacitly agreeing with the anti-life stance. While some would ask to leave the social issue of life alone within the political sphere, we do great damage to the message that ALL life is important if we fall into this stratagem. I understand political groups play to win. But, as a moral or Christian people, we are not necessarily called to WIN. We are called to STAND. Every time we choose to back out of the discussion, we are weakening the message of Personhood. We must remember See cormier on 30

It’s Time For Reality Day April showers might bring May flowers, but the lies of April lumber into May like zombies, mindless and moldy. by Ken Gorrell Northfield, NH. Advocates of those special April days called “Equal Pay Day” and “Earth Day” seem unaware that they celebrate the undead. Every year they reanimate their false narratives and set them loose upon us. It’s high time for a corrective. I propose that we designate a Sunday in May as Reality Day, a day of contemplation, a time look at the facts and expose the myths. Perhaps it should be the

last Sunday in May; we defenders of reality are going to need all the time we can get to mount an effective offense. Supporters of the “equal pay” myth would have us believe that women in the workforce make about 77 cents on the dollar compared to men. They never explain why businesses don’t take full advantage of this obvious cost-cutting opportunity and hire more women. Instead we’re told that women have to work until April – the 14th this year – in order to earn as much as men. The Obama campaign ran an ad in 2012 stating that “President Obama knows that women being paid 77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as men isn’t just unfair, it hurts families.” President Obama certainly knows the narrative, but he ei-

Pakistan Key Piece in China’s Wider Great Game U N I T E D NATIONS-The rhetoric reached the heights of the Himalayas, the pomp and pageantry evoked that of an opby John J. Metzler eretta, but the Syndicated Columnist political optics delivered a clearly focused political message; Pakistan has a firm and reliable friend in the People’s Republic of China. The high profile visit to Pakistan by China’s paramount leader Xi Jinping brought more than political bromides from Beijing to beleaguered Pakistan; China has put $46 billion in infrastructural investment on the table for its long-time South Asian ally. The reasons for the renewed coziness between Islamabad and Beijing are plenty; a common border, shared political interests concerning both the dangers of Islamic radicalism, and concerns in both capitals that American political inroads into neighboring India, Pakistan’s historic rival, need a counterbalance. What ties the bow together is China’s ambitious geopolitical New

Silk Road and New Maritime Silk road economic initiative connecting the Middle Kingdom with Eurasia by land and Southeast Asia by sea. China’s $46 billion infrastructural investment in Pakistan is set to build a network of roads, railroads, and port facilities which are part of the New Silk Road connecting China to Europe through Central Asia. The ambitious plan for a 1,800-mile highway allows the PRC backdoor overland access to the port of Gwadar but through Pakistan’s restive Baluchistan region. Though Pakistan has been courted by Washington as a vial ally in the war on terror and as a key player in Afghanistan, the relationship was often stormy and beset by political mood swings on both sides. Between 2009 and 2012, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proposed a $7.5 billion economic program for Pakistan which was largely unfocused and part of the Obama Administration’s widely flawed “AfPak” security policy plan which was deemed a failure. Since 2002, U.S. aid to Pakistan has reached $31 billion, about two thirds of it is security assistance, See Metzler on 36

Chaos in the Primaries Painful as it is to realize that both the Democrats and the Republicans will still be holding their primaries a year from now, that is one of the high pricby Thomas Sowell es we pay for Syndicated Columnist democracy. Seldom does the initial “front-runner” in either party’s primaries end up being the actual candidate when election day rolls around. However, even if we cannot predict the outcomes of the primaries this far in advance, we can at least start trying to understand the candidates, the almost candidates and the people who are running just for the publicity. One of the curious things this early in the process is that, while the Republicans’ three freshmen Senators -- Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul -- have all had interviews on various television talk shows, veteran politician Hillary Clinton has been hiding out from real interviews by hard news reporters, as if she is afraid to be cross-examined. This is by no means an irrational fear on Mrs. Clinton’s part. There are all sorts of questions that she would find hard to answer. They range from questions about recent events like the e-mails from her days as Secretary of State that she destroyed illegally, after Congress called for her to produce them, to the still unsolved mystery as to what she and Barack Obama were doing during the hours when four Americans, including our ambassador to Libya, were under attack by terrorists in Benghazi. Then there are the bald-faced lies, such as Mrs. Clinton’s claim

to have been shot at in a war zone, her claim that she and her husband were “poor” at the end of his terms as president, and her claim that charges of sexual misconduct against Bill Clinton in the White House were fictions invented by a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” Supporters of Hillary Clinton tout her “experience” in high-level institutions of government -- as first lady in the White House, as a Senator and as Secretary of State. But years of such “experience” raise the embarrassing question as to whether she ever actually accomplished anything in all those years, other than being physically present. Among the many Republicans’ announced and unannounced candidates, three of the most prominent are freshmen Senators with no tangible accomplishments to go with their rhetoric. Whatever their potential, which seems especially striking in the case of Senator Marco Rubio, the White House is not the place for on-the-job training, in an age of international terrorism and nuclear bombs. Barack Obama has already given us repeated demonstrations of what a mess a freshman Senator with rhetoric can make in the White House. While there are a number of Republican candidates who can point to substantial accomplishments as governors, the fact that most have strong track records as conservatives means that they may well split the conservative vote so many ways in the primaries as to let the nomination go by default to a mushy moderate -- of the sort beloved by the Republican establishment, but not by enough voters to beat even a weak or troubled Democrat on election day. I ALWAYS DEFEND THE First Amendment, as I do the Second Amendment. That should be by Niel Young Advocates Columnist the case for ALL Americans, but we know it is not the case with Looney Liberals, the Obama administration, the Gay/ Lesbian groups, and certain municipal and state employees Union Organizations, across the nation. From an email to staff at WEZS regarding our morning guy Allan Harrison: “Please tell Allan that I wish him well, and so miss his morning radio show. I have listened to him every morning since I moved here to Laconia, many years ago. He is a breath of fresh air, especially compared to ‘obnoxiously conservative and live in the past’ Neil Young. It is wonderful of the emailer to check in on my colleague and friend,

Allan, and, a smile on my face. Knowing it is not Liberal Lady, that means that one day or more, there were two liberals listening in. She, the emailer, hopefully has listened in at least a couple of times. As for living in the past; what was so wrong with the 50’s and 60’s when Americans watched for the children of their neighbors, and trusted each other? Not once have I ever left the house believing that one day there could be a dismemberment of my body, shot, stabbed, or blownup! Twenty years ago a murder or kidnapping would be rare. The ice was finally breaking for Black and White Americans to survive together. Then in the 70’s Viet Nam was becoming a BAD MEMORY – 58 Thousand of our young military heroes killed – for what, again? In all wars where the U.S. got involved we had “some allies. After 9-11-2001 we had some allies. Since 2008 how many allies and friends around the world do we have? Since the Nobel winner for Peace has been in office (2009) what are those numbers today? I no longer feel that I, my family, and fellow Americans are secure. Wherever they are! And that is because Hussein Obama is our commander-in-chief, and he does not love this country. Is that being obnoxious, or living in the past? ******** What do these U.S. Senators have in common: Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), Orrin Hatch (Utah), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Susan Collins (Maine), Jeff Flake (Ariz.), Mark Kirk (Ill.), Rob Portman (Ohio), Thad Cochran (Miss.), Ron Johnson (Wis.) and Mitch McConnell (Ky)? Each of them voted for

Loretta Lynch to be U.S. Attorney General, replacing Eric Holder. Kelly Ayotte explains: “Attorney General Eric Holder’s dismal performance and failure to follow and enforce the law for the past seven years has eroded Americans’ confidence in the Department of Justice’s ability to fulfill its responsibility to ensure that justice is administered fairly and equally. It’s time for a new leader at the Department. “Ms. Lynch is a wellrespected U.S. attorney with a proven record and significant experience handling difficult cases. After meeting with her and reviewing her qualifications, I believe she is clearly qualified and has the necessary experience to serve as Attorney General, and I will support her confirmation. “While I continue to have concerns with President Obama’s unilateral immigration actions, I have received written assurance from Ms. Lynch that she will respect both the current court injunction barring implementation of the president’s November 2014 executive action as well as whatever final decision results from the federal judicial system’s review process. Well, I guess we can take that to the bank. After all, Loretta is the choice of BHO! Is Mitch McConnell a man of courage and great leader? I would like to know what the rationale of the votes of Lindsey Graham and Orrin Hatch’s vote?

Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

I was posed this question the other day: “how long do you want to live?’ It seems simple, right? It did to me, at least. I’d like to live as I long as I can. It turns out, however, that the answer isn’t so simple for all. An older woman I know, laughed at the question and said she was “ready whenever. Why the difference in opinion? Obviously, there are a lot of factors, including current health and overall quality of life, that would influence a person’s feelings on longevity. I think, if a person feels bad physically and is unhappy or stressed emotionally, it is easier to feel like a long life span isn’t the best idea. Overall, though, I think most people would agree that having a longer life is generally preferred to a shorter life. The key becomes: how can we make aging as positive an experience as possible? How can we have enough quality in our life so that the quantity feels worthwhile. What follows are my commonsense tips to make your longevity feel as good as possible: 1) Start now: if you want to make healthy changes, start immediately. If you are young, don’t wait till you are old or have tons of problems. Start now and stay ahead of possible issues. If you wait till you are broken, the fix is always much harder. If you are more advanced in age, you should also start making improvements as soon as possible. I meet folks, who aren’t even old, who often say thing like: I’m too old, there’s no point in trying. That is so, so, so off base! Think

of it this way: if you are 60, you may live to be 90. That’s half your life over again. So start now. Making better choices for your health, is always a good idea. If you have changes you want to make, there is no time like the present. 2) Get moving: of course, exercise is important. We all know this. More than exercise, we also need to think about overall mobility. The ability to use our joints and to move is a key factor to our long term life enjoyment. Find a yoga class or start a home stretching program. If you lose flexibility and the ability to be mobile, then the bottom line is that you will lose the ability to take care of yourself. 3) Have a purpose: if you sit around and watch TV all day, it’s easy to feel bored and depressed. Now “purpose can mean very different things to different people. It could be faith for some, it could be a hobby or passion for another. Whatever it is, find it and do it. If you have something to live for, you often will. Find what makes you happy and don’t let go of it. 4) Cultivate relationships: people of all ages struggle with loneliness. Friendships and family bonds have all kinds of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. Seek out people with whom you can connect. Get involved. We all need people. As we age and retire, it can be easy to become isolated.

You have to choose to not let this happen, and make the effort to get out and connect with others. 5) Enough resources: for many a key factor is having enough resources to live comfortably as we age into retirement. It is never too soon or too late to try and save some money up. Even if it is only a small amount, every bit helps. The needs of a quality life are really the same, through all stages of life: physical health, purpose, relationships. If you find yourself rich in these areas, then life is much easier (not perfect, but better). If you don’t have these things, start looking for them regardless of your age. Improving your mobility is free, making relationships just costs a little time and effort. These steps are attainable for you. The main thing is to do the small things like these, so that you can give yourself the best chance possible to live the life you want for however many years you are blessed. Healthy Tips From Dr. Fink . If you have asked yourself “am I losing it? Or are easily distracted, forget why you went up or downstairs, this article may be just what you need. According to Dr. David Perlmutter MD & Board Certified Neurologist & author of The Better Brain Book, “the conventional wisdom that being forgetful is normal is outdated and wrong.” A healthy brain is vital to wellness. Verbal skills, visual and spatial memory and intellectual thinking all depend on a healthy brain. Memory issues are one of the biggest concerns with the aging population. With common complaints ranging from lack of focus to the inability to concentrate, people are searching for ways to support mental clarity, mood, and balance. Our brain is our control center with multiple components that work together for ideal performance. Dr. Perlmutter suggests if you’re not ready to sign up for the whole get healthy program there are some things you can do to preserve and protect your brain. First, “get the trans fatty acids & hydrogenated oils off your plate”. These are the primary fats found in packaged baked goods such as cookies, cakes and chips as well as fried foods. Like other dietary fat, trans fatty acids or trans fats become incorporated into your cell membranes. Unlike healthier fats, trans fats make your brain sluggish. They will slow your brain response time down while wildly accelerating the aging process. Trans fats are often labeled as shortening, partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated. Always read the labels so you know what you are eating. Be sure to take your fish oils, especially DHA, Vit E and B complex supplements. High levels of Ho-

B vitamins help to lower homocysteine levels Think twice before taking a drug. Hundreds of them including over the counter, rob the brain of B vitamins essential in protection. The same applies to over use of alcohol. Get 8 hours of sleep every night. Constant sleep deprivation is very bad for your brain. Our cells do vital repair work cleaning up toxins that accumulate in the brain while we sleep. Cut the Sugars out of your diet, especially high fructose corn syrup. Excess sugar consumption increases the risk of developing memory problems.

Dr. Perlmutter states “from the perspective of a neurologist, the standard American diet is a nightmare. He adds, I am often asked what I think is the single most important thing you can do to keep your brain functioning at its peak and prevent brain aging. That is easy, be vigilant about what you put on your plate. It’s as simple as that. Nutrition is the most important tool for staying mentally and physically fit and the most underutilized tool.” We at Fink Chiropractic Center invite you to consider trying the purification program to clean the toxins out of your system and get started to a healthier, more clear thinking you. WHITHER WATER ?? We’re spoiled around here. We have plenty of water—even too much sometimes. California’s not so lucky. Governor Jerry Brown is imposing a 25% cutback in water usage there. But that’s easier said than done. Such a cutback applied to agriculture would mean massive crop loss. Can you say “exemption?” There are countless swimming pools in California, and some of these pools provide water for potential fire-fighting during the dry season, which lasts around 11 months. Can you say “exemp-

tion?” So what about schools trying to comply with the mandated reductions by not watering athletic fields? Artificial turf could be the answer for some school athletic facilities, but that means mucho dinero. Will football teams play on dirt? Another exemption? But what about golf courses, the bane of Golden State environmentalists? The California links community is worried. They can’t have the greens turn brown. Exemption, please? Maybe artificial turf is an option for golf courses. Hmmm. I’m not sure how practical that might be, but I like the idea of short roughs that never need to be cut! Anyway, too many exemptions means California will run out of water. Perhaps showers could be outlawed. There’s a

reason why the Good Lord created those swimming pools! SECOND CHANCES? By a 15-3 vote, the Ohio State of Board of Education granted a threeyear “coaching” permit to Jeffrey Cargile Sr., a convicted felon. In 2003, Cargile was convicted of abduction and later failed mandatory drug tests. After he paid his debt to society and wanted to help coach schoolboy football, he was told he was banned for life. But Cargile spent years trying to prove that he was a new, different man— desperate for a chance. So I was happy to see the Columbus Dispatch report that the Board gave him an opportunity to work with young people after Cincinnati school educators and coaches described Cargile as a respected member of the Taft High School foot-

ball community who could share life lessons and be a positive role model for players. Good for the state board and good for Cargile. There is a place for second chances. Hopefully he won’t screw up. If an assistant coaching gig can give Cargile hope for a better future then that’s yet another example of sport redeeming lost souls. THE WHEELS OF JUSTICE …. … turn ever more slowly. Why did it take so long for convicted New England Patriot murderer Aaron Hernandez to get to court? Did his trial really need to be dragged out so long? And we all knew Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was guilty of the Boston Marathon bombings over TWO years ago. And yet we had this protracted trial anyway. Now we remain in the midst of the

sentencing phase—which is taking weeks. The only question is whether or not Tsarnaev gets the death penalty. Even if he gets the death penalty, appeals will drag this out for years to come. Yes, protracted trials means tax-payer funded bonanzas for some lawyers, but can’t we do better? Justice delayed is justice denied and creates endless pain for victims and others who want and deserve closure. Maman Orange Marmalade Directions • Cut the peel and pith away from two oranges and cut into neat segments. Drop into a small saucepan with the marmalade. Add the pared rind from the remaining orange, cut into long fine shreds, plus the juice. liquid ingredients. Whisk until smooth. • Heat a large, nonstick frying pan and brush with a little melted butter. Ladle the batter into the pan, allowing one ladle per pancake. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Small bubbles will appear on the surface of the pancakes when they are ready to flip over. • Stir the marmalade until smooth, then drizzle 1 tsp over the uncooked side of each pancake before turning. Continue cooking for an additional 2 minutes before removing from the pan. Cover the cooked pancakes with a towel͞ this prevents them from drying out.

• Serve the pancakes in small stacks with one or two spoonfuls of compote on top.

Have you ever thought about making your own beer? Maybe you are content to pick up your favorite brew after work and agree to be satisfied with that purchase. But if you have been curious, you are joining an ever-evolving crowd who are trying to make something different out of water, malt, hops, and yeast. May 2nd is National Homebrewing Day and to celebrate, we want to help get you informed about how it’s done, what you need to get started, and places you can get the supplies and equipment to get you started brewing your own beer! First, you must understand what makes good beer. Clean water makes good beer. If you only have chlorinated city water, get some bottled water. A normal batch of homebrew is equal to around 5 gallons or 48 of 12 oz bottles. Think about how much it costs you to buy two cases of your favorite beer and you might be more

The boiling process is done to convert the grains to a liquid called wort. interested in making beer! After clean water comes good quality ingredients. These must be obtained from stores that carry homebrew supplies. We will list these at the end of this article. The ingredients include malt extracts or crushed grains (wheat, barley, rye, etc that have been milled to open the grains for boiling), hops which impart bittering and aromatic flavors and scents, and yeast which eats the sugars from the grains and create CO2 and alcohol. Second, when you are making good beer, cleanliness is your friend. You have to sanitize anything that comes in contact with your creation. There are sanitizing cleaners that should be utilized whenever you are making something you will ultimately be ingesting. If you don’t, you will be taking a chance in off-flavors at the least and, at the worst, causing you and any others to taste bad germs that might infect you. Third, creating good beer is an art form. As you gain experience in this brewing art, you understand what is important to pay attention to (see point #2). Furthermore, using good quality ingredients is imperative to getting a good finished product. As a newbie to this process, a beer making kit is great starting place. Kits give

you good recipes, good ingredients and good result for your efforts if you closely follow the directions. There are basically three ways to brew: Extract, partial mash and all-grain brewing. Extract uses dry or liquid extracts that are derived from grains though a professional processing factory that gives you a finished product you can use in brewing. This will take 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Partial mash uses extracts and crushed grains to arrive at the same end as the kit provides. The grains need to be steeped, much the same way as making tea. Then there is a boiling process to convert the grains to a liquid called wort, which takes about 30-45 minutes longer. Allgrain uses crushed grains to get sugars from the grain that the yeast will use to get the flavor, color, and sugars to make good beer, which is a much longer process... maybe as long as 6-8 hours for brewing. I have been homebrewing for about three years and although I don’t have a ton of experience, I know what is important to pay attention to while brewing. Again, cleanliness is important. Also, know what works well together is important. Like good cooking, you don’t combine things that are too See homebrew on 34

Nestled in a conspicuous row of stores of a small mall in Derry, NH, hides Kelsen Brewing, a nano brewery who is getting noticed. In business only a few years, friends Paul and Erik had made some homebrew together and enjoyed the process so much that they decided to start doing it professionally. Since then, business is booming and they are happily brewing almost daily to keep up with demand. Both Paul and Erik are of Nordic decent and their brews reflect that tradition. Each of their artful labels resemble axe-wielding figures or old. Their recipes are their own and have been perfected in each edition as they gain more notoriety. Paradigm is joined by their other offerings, Battle Ax IPA, Draken Robust Porter, Double Battle Ax, and Vendel Imperial Stout. Other seasonals and special editions are expected as well. You can

gram under control. By the federal government’s own admission in multiple independent audits and inspector general reports, officials at the Departments of Homeland Security and State cannot efficiently police and monitor the flood. Those assessments show that we have failed to carefully vet the student applicants overseas; failed to screen out the fly-by-night “schools” certified to enroll them in the U.S.; failed to keep tabs on the “designated school officials” entrusted to track their compliance; failed to verify that the employers who are approved to sponsor F-1s for education-related “job training” are not exploiting the program as a pipeline for cheap foreign labor undercutting American workers; failed to ensure that F-1s go home when their visas expire; and failed to track and eject overstayers and violators who break the rules. Under federal corruption law, it is a crime to trade “things of value” with politicians to influence official acts or commit fraud. Yet, for decades, America has recklessly traded away one of its most precious “things of value”: entry into this country. It’s clear what Menendez and Melgen got out of F-1. But what about the rest of the country? Each and every temporary visa program is supposed to enhance the national interest -- not just the naked demands and desires of universities, corporations and dirty old men. Instead of stemming the tide and making enforcement a priority, politicians in both parties are pushing forward with various schemes to radically expand and extend the foreign student visa racket. It’s proof positive that Brazil’s got nothing on the biggest boobs in Washington. very important so the overlay never separates from the older concrete. The second phase of the repair job is inspecting the outer mortar joints for missing mortar. Be sure the mortar joints between the bricks are in great shape, and repair as necessary. Once you have the mortar in great shape, apply a silane/siloxane water repellent to the entire brick wall. Pay close attention to the written instructions with respect to air temperature and the amount of water repellent to apply. Some products require two coats, but the second coat must be applied within a few minutes of the first coat. If the instructions say this, be sure you follow these instructions to the letter. The reason for this is simple. If the first coat dries, it repels the second coat! Remember, the sealant is much like the raindrops and you need it to penetrate as deep as possible into the mortar joints to prevent water from entering your garage.

y

ner, use just very coarse sand in the mix. At its thinnest point, the sand should be quite fine. Add plenty of Portland cement to the mix so it bonds well with the existing concrete. When you’re mixing in the gravel, add three parts gravel, two parts sand and two parts Portland cement. When you’re not using any stone, just mix two parts sand to one part Portland cement. Be sure the concrete steps are clean and just before applying the overlay mixture, spritz the concrete with clear water to get it damp and then paint on a layer of cement paint. Cement paint is just a mixture of Portland cement and water that is blended to the consistency of regular paint. Where the overlay contacts the brick wall, I’d add a little extra to give it a concave shape like the inside of a shallow bowl. This means the overlay mixture laps up onto the brick for about three-quarters of an inch. You create this so the water running down the steps in a storm never contacts the brick wall. As soon as you finish the surface of the overlay so it looks good, spray it with a concrete curing compound so it dries slowly. This is

I

Each time you strike a nail with a hammer, it penetrates deeper into the wood. Think of each raindrop that strikes a brickwall mortar joint as both a hammer and a nail. When the first drop hits the mortar, it soaks in just a bit. When the second drop hits where the first one did, it pushes the first raindrop water a little farther into the mortar. Each successive pounding raindrop pushes the one before it deeper into the wall. Before long, you have water streaming down the inner side of the brick wall just as you show in your photograph. Here’s how I’d solve your problem. I’m going to assume you have some sturdy concrete steps that can’t be lifted so they tilt away from the wall. If this is the case, then you’re going to have to do a wedgeshaped overlay of concrete and cement stucco mix to make each stair tread slope away from the brick wall with a minimum 1/8 inch fall per foot. The overlay mixture where it’s over 3/4-inch thick must contain small pieces of stone no larger than a green pea that you’d eat for dinner. As the wedge of overlay gets thin-

ance (CGA), the association dedicated to protecting underground utilities and the people who dig near them, reminds homeowners and professional diggers that calling 811 is the first step toward protecting you and your community from the risk of unintentionally damaging an underground line. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a free call to 811. Installing a mailbox or fence, building a deck and landscaping are all examples of digging projects that should only begin a few days after making a call to 811. Calling this number connects you to your local one-call utility notification center. Nearly half of American homeowners say they do not plan to make a free call to 811 before digging, according to data

collected by CGA in late February. Extrapolated to the full population of U.S. homeowners, approximately 38.6 million people will dig this year without first calling 811. A utility line is damaged every six minutes in America because someone decided to dig without making a call to 811 to learn the approximate location of buried utilities in their area. Unintentionally striking one of these lines can result in inconvenient outages for entire neighborhoods, harm to yourself or your neighbors and repair costs. As a result, CGA offers the following tips to make sure you complete your project safely and without any utility service interruptions, so you don’t become a statistic. Here’s how the 811 process works: See dig on 27

dig from 26

1. One free, simple phone call to 811 makes it easy for your local onecall center to notify all appropriate utility companies of your intent to dig. Call a few days prior to digging to ensure enough time for the approximate location of utility lines to be marked with flags or paint. 2. When you call 811, a representative from your local one-call center will ask for the location and description of your digging project. 3. Your local one-call center will notify affected utility companies, which will then send professional locators to the proposed dig site to mark the approximate location of your lines. 4. Only once all lines have been accurately marked, roll up those sleeves and carefully dig

around the marked areas. There are nearly 20 million miles of underground utility lines in the United States that your family depends on for everyday needs including electric, gas, water and sewer, cable TV, highspeed Internet and landline telephone, which equals more than a football field’s length of utilities for every person in the United States. With that much critical infrastructure underground, it’s important to know what’s below and call 811 before digging. To find out more information about 811 or the one-call utility notification center in your area, visit www.call811.com.

tute provide a wealth of analysis every year on this topic. Two key points: 1. Saying that women working full-time earned some percentage less than men working full-time, as the “gap advocates claim, is not the same as saying that women earned less than men for doing exactly the same work while working the exact same number of hours in the same occupation, with exactly the same educational background and exactly the same years of continuous, uninterrupted work experience. 2. Pay differentials can be explained by everything except discrimination – hours worked, age, marital status, children, years of continuous experience, workplace conditions, etc. In other words, once you impose the important ceteris paribus condition of “all other things being equal or held constant, the gender pay gap that we hear so much about doesn’t really exist at all. Then there’s Earth Day, as if the planet needed its own day. For this annual escape from reality, Prof. Perry points us to “Earth Day, Then and Now, in the May 2000 issue of Reason Magazine. The historical perspective is hilarious or embarrassing, depending upon how tightly you cling to the prevailing narrative. For that 30th anniversary of Earth Day, science correspondent Ronald Bailey listed experts’ predictions from 1970.

They include estimates that “civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.â€? Another “expertâ€? prophesied that “By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.â€? After famine, pollution was a popular Grim Reaper for these learned prognosticators. Two of my favorites: “Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support‌the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollutionâ€? and “By the year 2000‌there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, `Fill ‘er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, `I am very sorry, there isn’t any.’â€? For today’s global warming crowd there’s this gem: “If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.â€? False narratives, then and now. It’s time to hold these peddlers of doom and gloom to account. Let’s remind ourselves and teach our children that on so many levels we have never had it so good. Reality Day, May 31st, 2015?

that individuals, not political parties, will change the Life debate. We must each individually decide which vessel we will support. Do we support the “politically correct” vessel of death or the spiritual vessel of LIFE? I am here to tell you that LIFE is gaining traction all over this country. Major politicians are now stepping up and speaking out in support of LIFE. Young people are beginning to understand what being PRO CHOICE (AKA PRO ABORTION) is really all about. LIFE is no longer just about the baby in womb. It is the about valuing our elderly or infirmed persons. It is about standing against the creating of life only to kill it for supposed scientific purposes or selective breeding. We are at the crossroads of deciding which way our country will travel. Do we go down the road of the Progressive selective life ideology (take heed - we do not know exactly WHO will be making those life decisions) or do we support Life in its totality from conception to natural death?

Next month, NHRTL will begin rolling out a new initiative called CHAMP – Changing Hearts and Minds Project. This project will be based on the Pillars of Personhood with regional groups engaging in non- political discussion on the conservative issue of our time – LIFE. CHAMP is all about changing hearts and minds, one person at a time by bringing people together on the full spectrum of Life. In addition, on Saturday, May 2, from 9:00 am – 11:30 am, NHRTL is holding an OPEN HOUSE to let folks know about our new home at 8 North Main Street, in Concord. We welcome any and all to join us as we begin our new CHAMP campaign. Remember, we are not called to win. We are called to stand. And, that is something we can ALL do! Jane Cormier is President of NHRTL, a former NH State Rep, and a professional opera singer. She can be reached @jane4newhampshire@gmail.com.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is today’s mushy moderate candidate who may well follow in the footsteps of a whole string of similar losers, from Mitt Romney and John McCain in recent elections, all the way back to Thomas E. Dewey, who managed to lose even in an election where three different Democrats were on the ballot, fragmenting that party’s vote. While the Republicans have several governors who would make good presidents, of whom Scott Walker and Bobby Jindal are the most prominent, that is very different from saying that these governors would make successful presidential candidates. How they handle themselves in the primaries can reveal that. Former Governor Jeb Bush has lots of political savvy on his side -- his own savvy and that of others -- and a ton of money behind him. So he could end up being the last man standing after the many Republican conservatives knock each other off. What could prevent that would be if each of the successive conservative Republican candidates who fall behind were to throw their support to whoever becomes the conservative candidate with the best chance of rescuing us all from another Clinton versus Bush election. But we should never bet heavily on rationality prevailing in politics. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. marketing department for Mitchell Comics. In the first frame of what is the story of Michael Mitchell, you’d have to picture a young boy in Rural Maine who found a love of comic books in the early 70s with the mystery and horror types like Boris Karloff and The Twilight Zone. “I wasn’t that big on Batman and Superman and those types of comics,” said Mitchell. “I also enjoyed the war comics and Mad Magazine. I always liked to draw and I was really interested in learning more about the artists, especially those from EC comics who created the ones like Tales From The Crypt.” Those artists were from the 1950s and were still working up into the 1970s. With a background more in advertising illustration, they didn’t have that familiar comic book look of the 70s which most folks were used to and that intrigued Mitchell. It was when he found out about Jack Kirby of Marvel Comics that a light went on in Mitchell’s head. “Most comic books had numerous people working on them but Jack Kirby’s comics were written, created and drawn by him, which very few did back them, I knew that I wanted to do that,” said Mitchell. In High School he ex-

perimented with a few of his own comic books with names like Starland and even one that was a biography of The Beatles. “My guidance counselor asked me what I wanted to do and I told him I wanted to be a comic book artist,” said Mitchell. “He told me he didn’t know of any schools for that.” Mitchell saw an ad in a comic book for a school for comic book artists run by Joe Kubert, who was once a DC Comics illustrator. “I submitted a portfolio and then got a phone call that Kubert wanted to talk to me,” said Mitchell. “I had a phone interview with him and he liked my work. I was accepted but the cost of it all was too prohibitive.” Mitchell ended up attending Community College and studied art. Eventually he went to work full-time, got married, had kids and his comic book aspirations went on hiatus. “I still tinkered with drawing over the years, but never got too serious,” said Mitchell. It wasn’t until his sons got interested in comic books and he went with them to a comic book show in 2003 that the light came on again. “There were some small press artists there who See zombie on 33

similar. My wife reminds me of this all the time when I try to help with a meal. She is a genius in that department. So, in brewing, look for balance. Not too much bittering hops and not too much malty goodness. One will lead to a bitter beer and the other will lead to sweetness beyond what is tolerable. This is the place where you start to understand beer styles and flavor ingredients. Hops have two different ratings. Alpha % and Beta %. The lupulin resins or oils from hops are the essence of each type of hop. Alpha acids pertain to the bittering effect that hops give to the beer when you include them when you start boiling. The later you

put hops into the boil, the more you get aroma from them and less bittering which is where the Beta % comes in. So, it is a careful balance. And this is where designer beers come from. There are literally dozens and dozens of hop varieties. If you want an IPA, add hops early in you boil. If you want a fruity, sweeter style beer, add them much later in the boil. Yeast is what actually creates the signature of your beer. Selecting the right yeast (again there are many, many varieties) for your style of beer is what makes it taste a certain way. For instance, there are yeasts that give a banana and clove flavor that work perfectly with Belgian style wheat

There are literally dozens and dozens of hop varieties. beers. The same yeast in an IPA (India Pale Ale) would be out of its realm. And because of complete yeast action (eating the sugars) is so important to select the right yeast type

for good beer. Many brewers pay close attention to exactly what is happening with their brews. The science behind it all is quite fascinating. I belong to Winnipesaukee Area Brew Crew homebrewing club. At any given time, our members are brewing or fermenting a number of great brew styles that we share and commiserate about. There are so many styles of beer to engage in... each having their distinctive way of being produced. Winter months are great for making pilsners and lagers because they require cooler temps of 45-60° to ferment. Ales, on the other hand, like temps of 65-79° to ferment correctly. The entire fermenting process takes anywhere from 5-21 days for a normal style, but wicked brew from 19

qualities of this great ale is its balance. With a thick tan head, malty mouthfeel, this beer delivers everything it promises. Although medium bodied, this brew has a great balance of bitterness and a sweet finish and is as smooth as silk in every swallow. There are also some chocolate, caramel and roasted notes that accompany the aroma. At 7.0% ABV, Paradigm is surprisingly luscious and worth every bit of time you spend with it. Moreover, it keeps your interest until the end of the experience. Lacing of foam lasts to the bottom of the glass. It is a wonderful creation which Kelsen has shared with us! This American brown ale style is true to form and will be a beer that other brewers will use

much longer for porters, stouts, and barleywines to mature correctly. So, becoming proficient at brewing takes practice. Starting out, you should brew with someone who has experience, some equipment and time to share their knowledge. If that is successful, then get a kit, borrow a large pot and brew your own kit. At least you then have the confidence that it might be an ok beer. If that works well, now it is time to select some relatively cheap brew equipment and try again and again to get a great batch of beer! So, if you are still interested in making your own beer, you need to visit a few homebrewing supply stores to get going. Case-nKeg, 5 Mill Street in Meredith has a great homebrew supply area with kits, grain and equipment to get you started. Smoke and Barley on Rt 3 in Tilton will also provide you with kits, grains or equipment to help get you going. The way I see it, if you don’t try it, you are not out anything. But if you do try brewing, you might find that you have tapped into an unknown hobby that will bring you a lot of satisfaction... brew on!

as a benchmark. It has won numerous medals in brewing competitions across the country. Distributed in 22 oz bottles, Kelsen’s great beers can always be found it at Case-n-Keg, 5 Mill St, Meredith. BeerAdvocate.com has rated this beer officially as 95 out of 100 which exclaims their ‘World Class’ mark of excellence. Others have given their accolades with 3.75+ to 5.0 out of a score of 5. Jim MacMillan is the owner of WonByOne Design of Meredith, NH, and is an avid imbiber of craft brews and a home brewer as well. Send him your recommendations and brew news to wickedbrews@weirs.com.

according to the Congressional Research Service. The real question becomes whether Pakistan’s economy will be able to effectively absorb so much aid over a short period without wasteful and massive corruption. Without question, Beijing is playing for higher stakes and putting more money on the table. The unspoken concern by the Chinese is that Islamic radicalism is already spilling across the Pakistan border into China’s restive Xinjiang province where a large Muslim population is tightly controlled by the communist authorities. Addressing the Parliament in Islamabad, PRC President Xi Jinping recalled the historically close ties with Pakistan, one of the first Islamic states to recognize the People’s Republic in 1951 during its era of diplomatic isolation. “The invocations of enduring friendship are music to the ears of a country accustomed to being vilified

The Port of Gwadar, being developed by PRC engineers since 2013, would be the terminus of the long overland line from Xinjiang in China’s remote and landlocked West. Yet Gwadar, once ruled by Oman but sold to Pakistan in the 1950’s, is quite close to the Persian Gulf and Straits of Hormuz sea-lanes through which over forty percent of the world’s petroleum flows. Interesting? Through its presence in Gwadar, China seeks to surround India. Separate reports indicate that China has sold Pakistan 8 submarines. a transfer out of the PCU nearly as long as Bryant and May have been with the PCU. It’s a particular group of crime fighters uniquely successful at solving London’s peculiar crimes. Of the twelve published Bryant & May books I’ve read and thoroughly enjoyed the first ten. Fowl-

er’s prose is full of humor, sometimes dark and sly, and loaded with London’s history. His plots are full of twists and turns, though he always plays fair with the reader. Full Dark House, is the first in the series and after Arthur unfortunately blows up the PCU’s office the story flashes back to Bryant and May’s first case

when I need it. So what’s so appealing about a unit of misfits lead by two old men who could have and perhaps should have retired years ago? Primarily it’s Arthur Bryant and John May. While I’d love to have John’s panache as I approach my later years, I fear that it’s Arthur style I will instead embrace, dressed in ragged jeans

during the London Blitz. The White Corridor distracted me from our white corridors this past winter and proved that even snowbound on a highway in Dartmoor Bryant & May can solve a crime close by and help solve the murder of one of their team back in London. In another great entry the PCU is disbanded, Bryant

is in bed, and the rest of the staff is looking for a job. London may be at risk with Bryant & May on the Loose but when a headless body turns up the unit gets back together and without an office, authority or computer access they solve the crime and keep London safe for the 2012 Olympics. I have number eleven, The Memory of Blood on my shelf, but I’m holding off on that until I can be assured of having my hands on number twelve, The Burning Man, which isn’t going to be released in the U.S. for a few more months. I might get desperate and it’s good to know that there’s a new Bryant and May close by

and sweatshirt, sitting among my books and papers, eating hard candy and sucking down tea. That’s not so bad.
