Gambling on Rock Climbing In Las Vegas by Amy Patenaude Outdoor/Ski Columnist

The gaming machines took us for a grand total of sixteen dollars at the Red Rock Casino. From what I understand that is a successful visit to Sin City. The trick to not losing money is not to gamble. A good bet would be that we were the only adults on holiday in Las Vegas that went to bed before 9pm and were out of our hotel room by 6am. Well, maybe not, but it seemed that way to us.

The Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa is on the northwest side of Las Vegas about 20 minutes from the famous Vegas strip, up the hill on Charleston Boulevard. The best part about the Red Rock Casino’s location is that it is only 15 minutes away from the gorgeous Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The Casino was a perfect place for us to make our base camp and to enjoy the comfort of a nice resort. See patenaude on 30

“The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” The sentiment expressed in that saying that has been around a long time still shows the great importance of motherhood even though cradles are seldom used and few mothers claim “Mother”as their exclusive occupation. The phrase quoted above is actually from a poem written by William Ross Wallace. The “traditional family” has been joined or replaced by the “modern family”, but differences in circumstances or years do not change the responsibilities or privileges associated with the word Mother. My mother was a teacher, and when she made plans to be married during the Great Depression time of the early thirties a Pastor’s wife warned her that “If you mean to teach this winter I suggest you do not get married until after school begins. There are loads of teachers out of jobs and you might find they would not let you teach.” She married in August and kept her job through the school year, but after giving birth to her first child the following July was not allowed to continue teaching. She was expected to give full time to being a housewife and mother, and in New Hampshire in those days raising a family on the farm kept a mother busy. Another saying of old told us: “Man for the field and woman for the hearth; Man for the sword and for

Sarah J. Hale the needle she.” That saying was being challenged soon after the life of the mother featured in this column by a new women’s movement. One very influential mother who was born and raised in New Hampshire was Sarah J. Hale who was born Sarah Josepha Buell on a farm in Newport on October 24, 1788 and lived until April 30, 1879. Her father had been a Captain in the Revolutionary War after which he moved to the Granite State. Mrs. Hale was a home-schooled,

single mother of five children who was an advocate of women’s education and a successful professional person while holding to the prominent view that a woman’s place was in the home. She once wrote” “God has given to man authority, to woman influence”. Her life-long pursuit of promoting education began with a teaching position at the age of 18. Europe Under Attack To The Editor: Since WWII Europe has welcomed tens of millions of Muslims from Africa and the Middle East who replaced the murdered Jews of Europe. Germany is leading the way, allowing 1 million Muslims to enter in 2015, and plans to bring in 1 million more in 2016. This will swell its Muslim population to 5 million. France has 6 million Muslims, the UK over 3 million, and Spain over 1 million. The burgeoning Muslim populations in Europe live in urban depressed and lawless areas, which are spawning grounds for crime and terrorism. Germany recently experienced a night of terror when young Muslim men attacked German Christian women. Sweden has reported a sharp increase in rapes of Swedish Christian women by Muslim men. Great Britain, France and Belgium have suffered terrible Islamic terrorist attacks killing and wounding many people, and the Muslim influx has increased anti-Christian and anti-Jewish incidents. Studies show many young Muslims believe suicide attacks are justified, including 42% in France, 35% in Britain, 29% in Spain and 22% in Germany. Surprisingly, the U.S. young Muslims are at 26%. As Muslim populations increase due to immigration and high birth rates there will be increased attacks and calls for sharia law.

Our Story

The United States should reflect on the European problems and Islamic attacks in Europe and this country, and rethink our immigration policies to help bolster our security by keeping out any people who might conduct Islamic terrorist attacks. Donald Moskowitz Londonderry, NH

Protect Our Lakes To The Editor: Protect our lakes by fighting fertilizer pollution The Moultonborough Milfoil Committee has removed over 50,000 gallons of invasive variable milfoil from Lake Winnipesaukee over the last five years, vastly improving the lake experience in the affected areas. However, in 2015, we received several reports from citizens concerned about weeds in areas of the lake where weeds have not been found before. In many cases, these weeds have been identified to be native plants. The state of New Hampshire prohibits the removal of native aquatic vegetation from lakes and ponds without a permit. In fact, if native plants are removed, the disturbed area becomes more vulnerable to being infested with variable milfoil which spreads faster and becomes much denser than the native plants. While we cannot remove the native plants, there are things we can do to make sure that the lake does not become more likely to support them. One of the key actions is to leave the area around the lake free of chemical and organic fertilizer. When fertilizer is used near the lake, phosphorus enters the waterbody in storm runoff. Phosphorus is a nutrient for milfoil and other aquatic plants. In addition, it can create algae blooms, turn the water green, cloud the water, cause odor problems, and See mail boat on 38

What’s In A Name?

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

One of the things that has always amazed me about living here in New Hampshire is the spellings and, more interestingly, the pronunciations of some of the towns, cities, lakes and roadways. These are important things to get right if you want to fit in here (especially if you are running for office). There are some great names that jump out at you, like moose and deer on busy highways. Many are derived from historic settlers and families as well as Native Americans. (I am talking about the names, not the moose and deer.) The most obvious example here in Central New Hampshire is Winnipesaukee, which is a recognizable name to just about any New Englander. Yet, how many can spell it the first time they try? How many people even know what Winnipeaukee means? There are many books and articles that give a different spin on what the Native Americans meant when they said “Winnipesaukee”. Some historians claim it means “The Smile Of The Great Spirit”, others claim it means “The Water In The High Places” and a few insist it translates to “Water Where Many Tourists Will One Day Come.” The great thing about Winnipesaukee is that when you see the word, even though you might not be sure how to spell it if asked, you know exactly how it is pronounced.

In some cases the spelling of a place doesn’t give you the whole story. Boscawen, Weare, Contoocook and Bow, to name a few of many, look pretty easy to pronounce, but beware, what lies beneath is a complexity of lip and tongue movements that defy explanation. What’s worse, to the uninitiated, newly transplanted Flatlander is that a verification of your pronunciation by a native might be answered with such expressions as “So Don’t I” which will only add to their confusion and proper learning. There are lighter sides to town names. I admit now that when I first moved here and was invited to the Sandwich Fair, I didn’t eat for two days to get ready. The fried dough was good, but no replacement for the many sandwiches I was anticipating. On the flip side of all of this is the spellings and pronunciations that seem to touch the nerves of even the most hardened native. (I’m not talking about the old Center/Center or boro/ borough controversies either. This was all brought to my attention because of a radio ad for the Weirs Times that runs on some local stations. Perhaps you’ve heard it. In it the names of many different places in New Hampshire are mentioned. Some who have heard it have come up to me on the street (actually on the sidewalk) very concerned over the pronunciation in the ad of a certain highway up north that begins with the letter “K”. It is spelled “”Kancamagus” and in the ad seems clear it is pronounced “Kancamangus”. Those who came up to me to complain (seems they have nothing much else to do) all pronounced it differently themselves. One

even pronounced the end of the word as in “Paugus” which I have heard others pronounce as “Paygus”. It is a vicious cycle. All of this intrigued me so I set out to research the correct pronunciation. Interestingly enough, the first five people (including myself) pronounced it “Kancamangus”, the sixth one claimed he used to say “Kancamaugus” but now said “Kancamangus” because everyone else did. One gentleman said “KanWeirs Times camungus”. The last per2 x 3” son I asked said he wasn’t 10th Anniversary Ad sure so he called it “The Kanc.” PMS 342: When all was said Screens and @ 50%, logo type @ 100% All the rest is black done, my poll revealed that “Kancamangus” was the overwhelming favorite. Of course, the results of this poll will not settle anything. I would imagine that it will only create more controversy giving people more fuel to rant and rave over something insignificant, as (No, I don’t believe it’s been that long either!) is human nature. I guess my point is, since 10% OFF ALL GOURMET FOOD I guess I’m supposed to have one, is if all of this is 20% OFF ALL GADGETS & GEAR really worth fighting over? 40% OFF DISCONTINUED ITEMS Will there ever be a real resolution to the very volaSale prices in effect thru end of May. tile Kancamagus issue? I am guessing that as long as there are people in New Hampshire the “Kancamaygus, mungus, mangus…” battle will go on and A KITCHEN SHOP FOR BUSY COOKS on. Year-round hours: TUE-SAT 10-5 In the thirty years I have lived here in Central New Hampshire I have learned, as I’m sure many Flatlanders like me have, that I really don’t care how it is pronounced, I’m just glad it isn’t called “The Cross Bronx Expressway” I still get nightmares about that place.

The singer dropped a highly incendiary album over the weekend titled “Lemonade” on her husband Jay-Z’s failing music streaming service, Tidal. When last we heard from booty-shaking Beyonce, she was growling and cursing her way half-naked through her Black Panther anthem, “Formation,” at the Super Bowl. But Queen Bey ain’t just settling for twerk-punctuated, fistclenching, cop-bashing radical chic. The Black Lives Matters message is incidental this time to her real beef: cheating hubby Jay Z and his mistress(es?). “Middle fingers up, put them hands high/ Wave it in his face, tell him, boy, bye,” she rants before jeering that her adulterous partner “better call Becky with the good hair.” Wielding a baseball bat, the designer gownswathed star sashays down the street in a music video obliterating car windows and fire hydrants. In case she isn’t clear enough, she threatens: “Ashes to ashes, dust to side chicks.” Whack!

Thwack! Bam! Cue the pop star’s bloodthirsty mob. Beyonce didn’t just toot a dog whistle. She sounded the alarm for her wolf pack. So far, the rabid fans have virtually mauled two women and one teenager in their online witch hunt on Beyonce’s behalf. When fashion designer Rachel Roy took to Instagram to joke about her good hair after “Lemonade’s” release, Beyonce’s spittle-flecked fans, who call themselves the “Beehive,” swarmed onto Roy’s social media accounts. They littered Roy’s Instagram comments with lemon and bumblebee emojis, for starters. Then, they quickly escalated to nasty death threats calling the ex-wife of entertainment mogul Damon Dash (Jay There is more Z’s former business partner) a and more discus“b---h” and a “hoe” who is going sion about Perto “get f---ed up.” sonhood these Stay classy, kids! days. Personhood embraces life from the earliest biological beginning all the way through natural death. It supports the belief that human life and dignity come from a divine entity. But, when human beings decide they can choose who should live and who should die, the slippery slope begins and human life is devalued throughout the life spectrum. Governments Paranoid Over Free Media: Survey Reports U N I T E D NATIONS— Governments throughout the world seem increasingly nervous if not paranoid over a free press by John J. Metzler a n d m e d i a , Syndicated Columnist according to a searingly poignant survey by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The annual survey of the global media in 180 countries, the French-based monitor report underscores a gradual deterioration in freedoms and the rights of journalists to freely pursue and present reports. “It is unfortunately clear that many of the world’s leaders are developing a form of paranoia about legitimate journalism,” states Christophe Deloire, RSF’s Secretary General. He adds, “The climate of fear results in a growing aversion to debate and pluralism, a clampdown on the media by ever more authoritarian and oppressive governments.” All this points to what the watchdog group calls a “deep and disturbing decline in media freedoms.” Days after this statement, the Islamic Republic of Iran sentenced four reformist journalists to prison on the charges of “acting against national security.” Though the Tehran regime’s actions are hardly surprising, the RSF report overviews the wider deterioration of press freedoms and accessibly in the USA and

Europe as well. First let’s analyze the survey, compiled by a rigorous methodology and analysis. Of the top ten countries with the freest media include Finland, Norway, Netherlands, Denmark and New Zealand. Not surprising. The second five include Costa Rica, Switzerland, Sweden, Ireland and Jamaica. Again impressive, but where’s the USA? Let’s look at the next ten countries. There’s Austria, Slovakia, Belgium, Germany and Canada among them. There’s good news here: Estonia has the best ratings of any country in the post-Soviet Union while Slovakia has the best numbers of any country in former Eastern Europe. Yet again, where’s the USA? The United States is ranked 41st in press freedoms, that’s behind South Africa and Slovenia and just ahead of Burkina Faso and Botswana. Despite America’s long cherished First Amendment which constitutionally provides for extensive media rights, there’s been a steady erosion of journalistic freedoms in recent years. In 2015 the USA ranked 49th. But why? The reasons are manifest in the Administration’s stringent use of security legislation. According to the report, “The main cause for concern for RSF continues to be the current administration’s obsessive control of information, which manifests itself through the war on whistleblowers and journalists’ sources, as well as the lack of government transparency, which reporters have con-

tinually criticized.” The RSF survey adds poignantly, “The Obama administration has prosecuted more whistleblowers under the Espionage Act than all previous administrations combined.”

But it’ s not just the U.S. slipping in press freedoms. Japan which has proudly sustained a free press in the postwar era, has now slipped eleven places to #72, just behind South Korea.

Conservatives For Trump The sudden appearance of Donald Trump on the political horizon last year may have been surprising, but not nearly as surprising as by Thomas Sowell seeing some Syndicated Columnist conservatives supporting him. Does Trump have conservative principles? Does he have any principles at all, other than promoting Donald Trump? A smorgasbord of political positions -- none of them indicating any serious thought about complicated issues -- is not a principle. Nor is cheering for himself and boasting about all the great things he is going to do as President. Haven’t we seen this movie before? Wasn’t Barack Obama going to heal the racial divide, end the partisan bickering in Washington, have the most transparent administration ever, lower the cost of health care and let you keep your own doctor? Had he actually done all those things, walking on water as an encore would have been an anticlimax. But instead, he did the opposite of all those things. There was absolutely nothing in Obama’s track record that should have led anyone to think that he would even try to do any of the things he declared he was going to do. But why spoil a great vision, and soaring rhetoric, by checking track records? It was bad enough for the voters to make the colossal mistake of being taken in by appearances and ignoring realities. But to repeat that very same mistake with Trump, immediately after the Obama administration, is truly staggering. How many pied pip-

ers are we going to follow off to parts unknown? At this late date, there is no point itemizing the many things that demonstrate Trump’s gross inadequacies for being President of the United States. Trump himself has demonstrated those gross inadequacies repeatedly, at least weekly and sometimes daily. Those who do not believe their own eyes and ears are certainly not going to believe any words of mine, or of anyone else. What William James called “the will to believe” is still as powerful today as it was when he coined the phrase more than a century ago. But what is there about Donald Trump that taps into that powerful current of credulity? The many betrayals of the voters by the Republican establishment, year after year, no doubt set the stage. And Trump is a great theatrical performer on any stage. But is that enough? It has been enough politically to put some of the great demagogues of history in power, especially after the existing establishment has discredited itself. The discredited Weimar Republic in Germany was vulnerable to the verbal attacks by Adolf Hitler that brought him to power. Now we know, too late, that Hitler turned out to be a bigger catastrophe -- for Germany and the world -- than the Weimar Republic. Donald Trump is not an evil man like Hitler. But his headstrong shallowness and fecklessness make him a dangerous man to have in the White House, with our enemies around the world on the march, and developing intercontinental missiles that can deliver nuclear bombs. A President of the United States has many heavy responsibilities See Sowell on 38

A Nice Story & GOP Meanness First, allow me to wish all of the mothers a Happy Mother’s Day. S i n c e 1973 (Roe V. Wade) by Niel Young Advocates Columnist 53 Million PLUS babies have been destroyed by abortion. The Vietnam conflict took 58,000 lives of our members of the military. And we are told by get rich quick republicans that those jobs of today can be filled by ILLEGALS (low wages, no benefits). That is the republican position. To the democrats the goal is to increase by large amounts of lawbreakers who may or may not seek employment once they enter OUR country! The INVADERS are expected to learn how to read a ballot. The one that has “democrat” at the top; the municipal labor unions, and the welfare department insignias should replace the donkey. Consider all of those lives that could have been part of our economy, with two generations! Instead we are importing ILLEGAL workers to please the US Chamber of Commerce (republicans) keeping wages low. The Democrats will urge those who will actually work, to consider how much easier it is to “apply and sign up”. After all, the Dems only ask in return, is for your vote! Just for knowing which box to mark on a ballot isn’t too hard to accomplish. ******** About three years ago, maybe a bit longer, this true story was unraveled in our kitchen. A VERY touching story we were about to hear. I have not heard from Liberal Lady on the air for some time now. She took great pleasure in telling

me one time that “you are not pro-life, because you believe in the death penalty”. Fine; call me antiabortion. When youngest son invites me to sit down; face drops, concerned look on face. “Are you okay, son?” Oh yeah, he’s fine. It was his final year at college. Girlfriend was finishing sophomore year. Together they had a decision to make. What do they do? No parents involved. Nobody except the fraternity brother who had a car on campus! The car would be for transportation to hospital 20 miles away. Every time I see THE Mother of my granddaughter I tell her how much of a HERO she is to me. Referring to the line, “it’s the woman’s body”. The good people who adopted (immediately following birth) our unknown granddaughter might agree that God works in mysterious ways. She spent 21 years living 5 miles down the road from daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Todd. Oh, no, that is not the end of our story. Everybody who loves Shannon attended her wedding in May 2015. WE were all there! But wait, little Brea was born April 12 (3 days after my birthday). Not that I was counting. I am sad to think about ALL children being born today and beyond. There are so few who will take the time to teach their children and grandchildren of what a great country this was. Breathe the air of Freedom. It will not last long. Tell them, please. Do not allow the America Haters to lie to the young ones. We are not perfect, Yet people from other lands are breaking in to be in this great country! **************** Once again our Sat-

urday edition of the The Advocates radio has exceeded expectations. During this week check out wezs.com for the 4 hour podcast April 30. Hour 3 we had candidate Jim Rubens for 50 minutes of me, and the listeners, asking questions. He is very impressive. ******** Cong. Tom Cole: “Ted Cruz. Classless, tasteless and counterproductive.” And another example from Lindsay Graham: “If you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you.” “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable SOB in my life.” ******** As for me the closest ladies to being a mother to me was my grandmother and great aunt and they were all I had for parents. And now, we have Brea. Her mother was spared because two young people made a loving choice; life.

Care & Feeding Of Paintings & More…

M ethod’s of the M aster’s 101 w ith artist T eresa D ’E sopo S pinner

by Kimberly J.B. Smith Contributing Writer

You find a work of art that you love and make the purchase - an inspired investment. But then what? What does it take to keep your art in tip top shape? There are some basic tenants for keeping your art safe. Here are some tips for you. S u n l i g h t : First and foremost, do not hang your art in direct sunlight! This can fade your art. Fading cannot be fixed. Artist Marc Rothko made some great paintings that he called “color fields.” In addition to sunlight issues, Rothko used inferior paint. Then, a well-known Ivy League institution hung some Rothkos in one of their buildings. This building was a sunny, high traffic space where students congregated and food was present. Long story short, these paintings faded to the point that they no longer look like the originals. Additionally, damage to these particular pieces of art included graffiti. Your piece may not be an A List work of art, but it’s your collection. You needn’t fall prey to this problem! Find a nice location to feature your art that isn’t in direct sun. Heat & Humidity: This is in reference to bath and shower spaces with lots of steam. Find something less valuable or more durable for that space. Other potentially hazardous (to your art) places are near fire places and furnace vents. If you couldn’t stand being in a particular spot 24/7, your art won’t stand it either. Avoid above stoves as well. Avoid all sources of steam, whether hot or cold.

“Cantaloupe Slice” by New Hampshire artist BJ Eckert of the Lakes Region Art Association. More of her work can be seen at the LRAA Gallery at Tanger Outlets in Tilton. Do Not Touch!:Only once in my experience did I attend an art exhibit that not only allowed touching, but encouraged it! The exhibit was interactive and building of temporary sculptural compositions was the goal. However, 99% of art is to look at. Damage will result from touching paintings because of the oils, salts and dirt that are found on hands. Touching art can soil it and worse, can break down the paint. Enjoy the beauty, skill or the intellectual challenge of the art but hands off! Cellars: You may have realized by now, that dramatic fluctuations in heat and humidity are red flags. You can add mold and silverfish to the threats if you store art in your cellar. Cars: There is a renaissance happening in the art of encaustic wax painting. Encaustic painting is a very old tradition that can be found as far back as the 1st & 3rd Century A.D. In particular, funerary mummy portraits were done on wood or canvas. Many contemporary artists are working in en-

caustic these days. Imagine making a purchase of art made in the medium of wax encaustic and putting it in your trunk while you are out and about. You will return to find a disaster on your hands! Additionally, with all the great mixed media art being created these days, play it safe and don’t leave your art in the car! Prints & Photographs: These artworks should be matted and framed behind glass for their protection. Make sure your paper mats are acid free and archival quality. The acid in regular mats can eat away at your print. If you have ever seen an old print with brown spots on the image, you are seeing damage due to inferior framing materials. Also, your art should not sit against the glass because moisture can fuse the art to the glass. You can also select anti-glare glass if you like. These basic tips will give you a good basis for taking care of your art. Enjoy your unique, one of a kind, art collection!

And that number doesn’t include those who are currently serving or their families?! National Military Appreciation Month is a time to honor and appreciate those who have served and are serving! This month provides a public opportunity to demonstrate remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifices of our military and to remind Americans of the important role our Armed Forces has played in preserving our freedom. by Dale Helen Maguire Contributing Writer

Dale Helen Maguire, a new columnist who will appear occasionally here in the Weirs Times, is a Laconia resident currently living on assignment in Brussels, Belgium. Who would have thought that a casual drive through the German Black forest would turn into such an adventure? It started out well enough. We passed picture post-card perfect villages and rolled over stone bridges crowned with colorful springtime flowers above clear, cool babbling brooks. Even the forests were seemingly prepped for our viewing pleasure; no scrubby bushes, fallen trees or low lying branches marred the hauntingly beautiful scene between the stately trees and below the green canopy. It was exciting knowing that these very forests were the backdrop for many Grimm’s Fairy Tales favorites. That was until we were barred from proceeding on our pre-prescribed route as roadway after roadway was closed to traffic. It was then that we noticed something else. Erected between the shoulder and the tree-line were what looked like our New England snow fences; though these were only 3 feet high. They were constructed with lengths of green tarp, mesh or horizontally woven branches strung between miniature ‘posts’. Given their small scale we wondered about their purpose, especially since some actually led down to cement pipe tunnels under

the thoroughfares. Maybe the stories of woodland fairies, gnomes and elves weren’t myths after all. Finally, we stopped at a riverside Gasthaus (hotel/ bed-and-breakfast). In the small restaurant area, we were greeted warmly by a group of local residents gathered, as was typical on Thursday evenings, around the Stammtisch (This was a table set-aside for locals only- similar to Norm’s and Cliff’s stools at the bar on Cheers.). When asked about the detours and little barriers, one of the guys explained that it was frog mating season and these were set-up to protect their migration. To this another hooted with laughter. He said the ‘fences’ were designed to keep slippery frogs and leaves off the roadways; reducing the risk of damage to passing highly-prized German cars. In fact, he added, they were on their way to the frog transfer stations. At our puzzled look another man, wearing knee high rubber boots like the others, clarified that at points along the diversions there

were buckets (known as pit-fall traps). Twice a day they would take the frogs collected in these and carry them to the other side of the street- to be with their ‘honies’, he added with a wink and a grin. But what if their ‘honies’ were in the bucket on the opposite side also waiting to be air-lifted to their croaked about rendezvous point? If so, this scheme might actually doom the would be lovers to be eternally separated. Maybe this was the inspiration for the Grimm’s tale of the ‘Frog Prince’? In any case, such wildlife conservation practices are not so strange after all. In fact, back in ’03, New Hampshire constructed and studied the effectiveness of frog barriers and under roadway tunnels. Given the determination and athleticism of these amphibians, it was determined that better designs were needed. So in the meantime, beware. Springtime road hazards are out there and the creatures are likely a little distracted.

FANS AGAINST CONCESSION EXCESS (FACE) A spectre will soon be haunting big league sports— the spectre of FACE (Fans Against Concession Excess). The time has come for sports fans to step up and sound off. Not for their favorite teams, but for themselves and their wallets. That concession prices for everything from popcorn to hot dogs to soda to beer are exorbitant is not news. Many saps and suckers just keep paying out the nose—pathetic schmucks that we are. But it’s time for action. But first: concession prices need to be distinguished from ticket prices. You HAVE to buy a ticket to see the Red Sox play. However, you DON’T have to buy a hot dog. The average Red Sox ticket costs $52.34— the highest in the Majors. And apparently there are plenty of people still willing to pay to see a team that’s finished last three out of the last four years. And that’s OK. It’s still a (mostly) free country. (BTW: The average San Diego Padre ticket costs $16.37, which gains one access to perhaps the nicest park in the Major Leagues—as opposed to Fenway Park, where people my size don’t fit into most of the seats. But I digress.) We talk about ticket prices and player salaries in my sport management classes. And every year,

Do Fenway Franks NEED to cost $5.25? students argue that there needs to be salary caps to keep ticket prices down. But we also talk about the market, and discuss WHO is to decide how much anyone is to be paid. In the public sector it’s appropriate to define salaries. But the private sector is different. Players should be free to get as much as they can. The free market and the capitalistic system made this country great. Eventually people DO figure out that ticket prices and player salaries will continue to go up as long as people continue to buy tickets, apparel, and watch games on TV. When people STOP buying tickets or watching games, then prices will come down. This most basic economic concept of “supply and demand” should not be that hard to understand— although Bernie Sanders clearly hasn’t gotten it yet. Which brings us back to hot dogs. And popcorn. And libations. At a recent NBA game, I paid $15 for a beer—although it came in a special “souvenir” container. Still, there are only so many $15 libations that one can afford to buy—unless one

is wealthy. But should sports—and hot dogs—be only for the wealthy? I say NO! I say “Affordable Fenway Franks for All!” Come on Red Sox! If we must pay $20 to park and then $60 for a crappy seat, then can’t we at least get a hot dog for something less than $5.25? Seriously! But the reality is the Red Sox will keep charging what the market will bear. So we need to change the market. When people STOP buying hot dogs, the price will come down. This will take discipline. It won’t be easy. For me, a hot dog is part of the Fenway experiSee moffett on 18

We all know someone who is kind of off kilter or not quite right somehow. That doesn’t make them wrong or bad, it just makes them more interesting. The same can be said of brewers within the boundaries of New Hampshire. These are artisans and mad scientists, bold inventors and chefs of beer. They are a little off but that’s what makes their efforts fun. Today we look at that wilder side of NH brewery, Oddball Brewing. The two gents met during a homebrewing night at a mutual friend’s house. Both had been brewing for decades. They struct up conversation that led to friendship and ultimately to the recent opening brewery. They are located at 6 Glass Street in Suncook, NH. Their 1890‘s historic facility boasts of a taproom where you can purchase growlers and 22 ounce bottles which are also available around the state, and on tap around various eateries in the Concord area. You can learn more about them at www.oddbbrewing.com Hoptomic is quite a mix of everything you would expect from a double or imperial IPA. The citrus and piney notes present themselves upon your initial approach although it is not overly evident as one would think. A slight haze prevents this beer from being overly golden. The white head disappears almost immediately with little glass lacing thereafter. With a medium mouthfeel, this

D.A. LONG TAVERN beer plays a bit with your senses. The late bittering isn’t what you would expect from an imperial or double IPA. Caramel and more citrus come through with the bittering which helps balance the complexity. This beer doesn’t drink like 8.4% ABV so beware of the sneaky evil of an imperial punch. Most on BeerAdvocate.com agree that this Oddball IPA ranks in the mid-3’s out of 5 rating system. This treat is available with its cousins Wanderlust Wheat, Idle Idol IPA and Sandman Stout at Case-n-Keg in Meredith and Laconia as well as other well stocked beer emporiums. proper height. More importantly, the hole was facing in the right direction so that the prevailing New England winds didn’t create havoc with the eggs. Did you know that most cavity nesting birds have more than one brood each year? Would you like to see the same birds reuse your nest box immediately after the baby birds have “flown the coup? Should you remove the old nest or leave it so that the adults do not waste energy building another one? What if the birds do not like you touching their home? If you do remove the nest, how can you be sure when to take action? What if the birds return and see an empty nest box? These are the most common questions our customers have in regards to bird houses or nest boxes, as we prefer to call them. Birds only use a box to lay eggs and raise the young. After baby birds leave the nest for the first time, they do not return. The nest box has accomplished its task. It is time for this box to assist the adults in another brood immediately after the fledgling stage has been completed. First, how do you know if the babies have left? If you have ever witnessed a nest in action, the activity of the parents raising and feeding the young is a constant, daily commotion. Every ten minutes or so, birds will be leaving and entering the hole. When the babies are big enough, the tiny heads will always be sticking out of the entrance. After the birds fledge, all activity around this nest box ceases to exist. The

difference is very noticeable. You will know the day the nest is no longer being used. At this time, you should remove the old nest and properly dispose of it. Do not simply brush it to the ground as the birds will use the old material to build a second nest. Old nesting materials such as grasses contain mites and other harmful microbes that will harm newborn hatchlings. Farmers who store hay in barns have to be careful to rotate old stock with new to ensure that contamination does not occur for the same reason. Usually, most people can remove the first nest around the end of June. Birds that started the first nesting at the beginning of spring are usually ready for the second nest building stage at that time. So, give your birds a helping hand now so you can relive the moment when new life emerges from your backyard. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Steve White is a contributing author in major publications, a guest lecturer at major conventions in Atlanta and St. Louis as well as the host of WEZS 1350AM radio show “Bird Calls with Lakes Region Newsday @ 8:30AM. Mother's Da Day! y! How to Make Mother’s Day More Meaningful this Year something homemade and one-of-a-kind. If your talents don’t lie in the creative realm, a note to your mom expressing love and appreciation for all that she’s done for you is a great stand-in for a store-bought card. Whatever you decide to do for Mom this Mother’s Day, consider celebrating a little differently. While Mom should still take center stage, you can add a lot more meaning to the holiday by thinking outside the box. (StatePoint) Gifts and flowers are a nice way to show mom you care on Mother’s Day. But this year, consider adding deeper meaning to the holiday (which falls on May 8) with these ideas: Volunteer Together After breakfast in bed is wrapped up, spend the day working side-by-side with your mom on a local volunteer project. Whether you take advantage of the spring weather and participate in a park cleanup, or you serve lunch at a local soup kitchen, you and your mom will enjoy quality time together, while also feeling good about helping the community. Gifts that Give Back You could forego a tangible gift altogether and instead make a donation in your Mom’s name to charity. Here’s one worthy cause: There are 153 million orphans worldwide, according to UNICEF, many of whom lack basics like food, water, education and medical care. “In honor of Mother’s

Day, consider paying tribute to your mother by helping provide a mom to those who don’t have one,” says Caroline Boudreaux, founder of The Miracle Foundation, a non-profit that improves the way orphanages are run, funded and managed. The international charity is currently raising funds to pay the annual salaries and room and board of housemothers working in orphanages in India. Each housemother acts as a mom to 20 orphaned children in her care, creating a nurturing environment where they can thrive. To honor your own mother or another special woman in your life, consider visiting miraclefoundation.org/mothers to learn more about the campaign and to make a tax-deductible donation. Use Your Talent Do you sing? Are you a writer or artist? Give your mother a unique creation. From water-colored paintings to a novella starring Mom as the heroine, you can make Mother’s Day extra special by gifting

dren. It is reported that she wore black clothes for the rest of her life as a sign of “ perpetual mourning. Her fifth child was born two weeks after David’s death; she had three sons and two daughters, the oldest being seven years of age. She started selling her writings to support herself and her family, becoming at first a successful writer of poems followed by a novel, Northwood. She is the author of the nursery rhyme that seems to delight each

new generation of children, Mary Had A Little Lamb, which was published in her book Poems for Our Children. Sarah Hale moved to Boston in 1827 to start a job as the editor of a new magazine called Ladies Magazine and Literary Gazette which was shortened to American Ladies Magazine. In 1836 she became the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, published by Louis Godey. She moved to Philadelphia in 1841. Sarah continued the writing of poems and

novels throughout her life along with lessons on writing, and cooking books , and is known for promoting women’s education, feeling that they should have the same opportunities as men. Though she stressed the importance of women on the domestic scene, she also felt that there were certain occupations, such as teaching, that were best served by women. Mrs. Hale is also credited with having a lot to do with the proclamation by Abraham Lincoln to establish Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday in 1863 during Civil Wars times. Having observed such a day herself and having urged five presidents through her editorials to set apart a day for the giving of thanks, she finally saw that desire come to fruition. Sarah had begun campaigning for a national day of thanks in 1847 when she wrote that: “The governor of New Hampshire has appointed Thursday, November 25th, as the day of annual thanksgiving in that state. We hope every governor in the twenty-nine states will appoint the same day-25th of November – as the day of thanksgiving! Then the whole land would rejoice at once.

In 1852, as she continued promoting making a thanksgiving day the third national holiday (Washington’s birthday and Independence Day were the only two at that time) Hale stated her case as follows: “ THE FOURTH OF JULY is the exponent of independence and civil freedom. THANKSGIVING DAY is the national pledge of Christian faith in God, acknowledging Him as the dispenser of blessings, These two festivals should be joyfully and universally observed throughout our whole country, and thus incorporated in our habits of thought as inseparable from American life. Sarah Hale was involved in other charitable and educational activities including the sending of missionaries to other countries and raising funds to complete the Bunker Hill monument. She was also involved in the world of fashion, promoting simple styles of clothing for women. Along with mothers who have had the life-long support of a husband, she is one of many women who have been left as widows to care for and support their children because of the death of their husbands and have proved to be good mothers to their children while contributing moral leadership for others in their place of influence. Japan’s press restrictions concerning “state secrets remain onerous. During a recent visit to Tokyo, UN special Rapporteur David Kaye called on the Japanese government to safeguard media independence which he stressed were facing “serious threats. Kaye’s criticism stems from parliamentary legislation which expands wider protections to what’s deemed “state secrets. The Republic of China on Taiwan still maintains the highest free press standing in East Asia: Taiwan comes in at #51, compared with Hong Kong at #69 and the Philippines at #138. Mainland China’s media freedoms are near the end of the list scoring #176, just behind Vietnam and one step ahead of Syria. As in past years we see the steady and sustained assault on free media: press, radio/TV, internet and blogs from a wide swath of regimes many of whom are under the political radar. Of the usual suspects, Venezuela stands at #139, Russia at #148 and Islamic Iran at #169, but then there are places like Azerbaijan at #163 or Sudan at #174, or even Mexico where drug cartel violence, killings of journalists, and widespread corruption impact on a media which ranks #149 globally. As is now almost a tradition, North Korea and Eritrea are at the bottom of the list rounding out the most repressive states for media freedoms. Surprised? John J. DEAR TIM: I’ve got a walkout basement garage door I want to convert to French doors. I realize I need to shrink the size of the opening to create the correct rough opening for the new door. But that’s the extent of what I know. What other installation instructions can you give me so the doors don’t leak and last for generations? I’m doing this myself and need your expert guidance. --Glenn K., Loudon, Tenn. DEAR GLENN: This is an ambitious but doable project, assuming you have the correct tools. Looking at the photo you sent, I only see two possible trouble areas that could stump the average serious DIYer. You’re wise to realize that water is your enemy. Just yesterday I did a phone consultation with one of my website visitors who had a serious wood rot problem because an exterior door was not installed properly and the threshold was rotting. The wet wood also had become a nesting spot for carpenter ants. Fortunately, you’ve got a concrete slab that will be under the door, but even with that you could have serious moisture problems. One thing I can tell you is to avoid any advice where someone tells you to rely on caulk. Caulk, in my opinion based on decades of experience, should never be the primary thing to rely on to stop water infiltration. Your water problems are along the top and

Krampitz The homeowner wants to install French doors in this garage door opening. It’s not that hard to do. bottom of the entire opening. As I look at your photo I see that the existing trim that surrounds the garage door is laying on top of your concrete block foundation. There’s exposed concrete block above the trim extending to the siding that covers your house walls. You’re going to have to install a large piece of continuous flashing that will cover the block and slide up under the first course of the siding. This flashing will then be bent so it covers the top of the door trim and then bends downward again to cover the top one-half inch of the door trim. You can use a piece of aluminum roll stock if you want for this flashing. You might have to hire a siding contractor to use his metal-bending brake to make this custom piece of flashing in about 10 minutes. You also need to make

a decision about where you’re going to place your wall framing in the oversized opening. My guess is that you’re going to want to line up the inside of the wall framing to any wall studs or furring strips that may be on the inside of the concrete block walls. If you align the wall with the inside and you use 2-by-4s or 2-by-6s as your wall framing,

Tips to Spruce Up Outdoor Spaces (StatePoint) When the weather warms up, it’s all about relaxing outdoors. But it’s possible you’ve neglected upkeep on your home’s outdoor spaces during the chilly months of winter. To enjoy yourself more this season, take time to spruce up your yard. Here are some quick tips. Do a Survey:Take a walk around the perimeter of your patio, deck and yard to survey what needs to be cleaned, repaired or replaced. Did potted plants and lawn ornaments survive the cooler months? Are outdoor light fixtures functioning? Are fallen branches littering the yard? Make a mental todo list. Deep Clean: Like interior spaces, periodic deep cleans are necessary outdoors too. But don’t waste your leisure time. “With the right tools you can work smart, not hard,” says Jeff Devlin, host on a popular home improvement channel. “A heavy-duty cleaner, such as Mean Green Degreaser, not only works indoors, but is ideal for my tough outdoor cleaning jobs.”

Devlin recommends using the Super Strength multi-surface formula -- which is lab-tested to clean and remove grease, grime, mildew, dirt, and oil more effectively than its competitors -- to clean and remove mildew from patios, outdoor furniture, concrete, composite and wood fences and siding, as well as to clean and degrease tools, lawn equipment and grills. Use it as a concentrated spray or diluted solution. Clean with a brush or sponge. “For your toughest jobs, add it to your pressure washer,” says Devlin. Helpful cleaning tips can be found at MeanGreenDegreaser.com. Routine Maintenance: Perform routine upkeep

to keep items from falling into disrepair or becoming overgrown or unkempt. Sweep walkways and your deck regularly, especially if they are situated under trees. Promote a healthy lawn by mowing it regularly, never removing more than one-third of the grass blade. Keep gutters devoid of leaves and debris so that water does not collect in your yard or at the base of your home’s structure. Rinse patio furniture, umbrellas and awnings using water or a diluted cleaner. Spring is in the air. With a little effort, you can be prepared to make the most of it.

Tips To Make Spring Cleaning Safer And Easier (StatePoint) If you love the results of spring cleaning, but not the process, it could be that the methods and tools you’re using to get the job done are making the work harder than it needs to be. To get your to-dos done with less effort, consider these tips.

Avoid Reaching Cleaning can be a pain in the neck -- and back, Ru s t Cabin and everywhere else for y i z o that matter.c Treat your

Tree Removal – Pruning – Planting 603-494-6395 kurt@pemitreeworks.com

cleaning like a workout. Stretch your neck, shoulders and torso beforehand. Also, look for implements that reach so you don’t have to. For example, a versatile tool like the Everywhere Duster, with its washable microfiber head, pivots to work in hardto-reach nooks and crannies from floor to ceiling, such as window sills and molding. Work Smart Mopping can be a tricky task when you’re using a conventional mop and bucket. Rather than push an ever-increasingly dirty mop around your floors, seek out smart cleaning tools that work for you. A built-in washing spinner at the bottom of the bucket can help keep things cleaner as you go. For example, the Spin Cycle Mop features two spinning mechanisms -one to wash and one to dry -- so you don’t drip dirty water on the floors that you’re attempting to clean. Use microfiber cloths and dusters that hold onto the dirt they gather so you don’t leave a trail of dust as you move from room to room. These materials are machine washable, so your post-cleaning tasks are a

cinch as well. For more cleaning tips, visit www.Casabella. com. The fresh feel that spring cleaning affords does not need to come at a great cost to your happiness. With a few tweaks to your routine, you can make it simpler and more enjoyable.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals One of the less savory aspects of cleaning can be the exposure of one’s eyes and skin to harsh and irritating chemical formulas. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In some cases, you can get the same results with natural alternatives and, at times, just water. For example, microfiber is designed to pick up and trap dust, dirt, fingerprints, and grime from furniture, woodwork, and cabinetry without scratching surfaces. Brands such as Casabella offer an array of cleaning supplies made of this material, including cloths, chenille mitts, mops and dusters, which offer deeper cleaning with just a little bit of water.

Make it Fun Before you even get started, take steps to prepare yourself for an afternoon or day of chores. Turn on some music to motivate you. Open the windows to get some fresh air. Eat a solid meal so you’re fueled for the tasks at hand. You’ll already be in a much better mood.

past the inside face of the wall. This is usually 1/2 inch. This needs to happen so the flashing just touches the inside face of the door threshold. This base flashing is the foundation to your entire door project. It will keep water from flowing into your basement. The side wall flashings drop down into this base flashing so any water they collect can be channeled to the ground outside the concrete block foundation. Be sure you use a weather barrier fabric or traditional felt paper to cover the wall sheathing to protect it from wood rot. Think as you build so that you do everything possible to keep water from getting to any wood framing or under it.

go down to the ground. All of the flashings you install need to act like the siding on your home that is above the new door or the shingles on your roof. Note how each piece of siding or each shingle overlaps the one below. When gravity pulls water down across the roof and siding, this method of overlapping prevents water from entering your home. The most important, and first, flashing that needs to be installed is a giant one that will be under the entire wall you build. This flashing needs to create a pan that collects any and all water and redirects it to the outside over the outside edge of the concrete slab that extends from the basement out through the garage door opening. I’d make this flashing out of sheet lead that you can buy online. The back edge of the lead must lap up about 3/4 inch onto the bottom plate of the treated wall plate you’ll use for the wall. This flashing must extend past the inside plate by the same distance that your new door extends

you then have additional potential water issues where the exterior of this wall contacts the concrete block wall or the wood trim that appears to be covering the block. Once again, you can’t rely on caulk to seal this contact point for 20, 30, 50 or more years, no matter what the warranty on the caulk tube reads. You may need to rely on the siding contractor with the metal-bending brake to make additional custom pieces of metal that wrap around the offset created by the thicker concrete block and then eventually lap onto your new frame wall. This metal would have to have a hemmed edge where it laps onto your new framing to prevent water from seeping sideways. A hemmed edge on metal is where the metal makes a 180-degree bend over onto itself, but it doesn’t touch itself. The overlap on the metal should be about one-half inch and the gap between the overlay should be about 1/8 inch. Water attempting to go sideways is stopped by the overlap and is directed to

Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area is a public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management and is not a National Park. This was explained to us by the man working the toll gate to the Scenic Drive. The seven dollar per car entry fee would not be waived. During National Parks Week free admission is only at National Parks. He sighed after his explanation. I bet he

had to say that a thousand times a day for the entire week. This is not our first visit to Red Rocks. This area is a rock climbing Mecca. For our first day of climbing we decided to go to a place we had been before and that we could sport climb. Sport climbing has the protection bolted on the wall and a climber is able to just clip-in for one rope climbs. This would be a good warm up for our

We found the big boulders on our way back and the path went right between them just like the guide book directed big plans. Even though we had been to the Black Corridor once before we still managed to not find our way through the Calico Hills without getting misplaced. Only the main perimeter path has directional signs. We had to rely on the description in the guide book because foot paths and herd paths go everywhere and many lead to a dead end or go the wrong direction. Our early start rewarded us with our choice of climbs because we were the first to reach

went in all directions and “turn at the big red rock and go between two big boulders” as directed in the climbing guidebook was unidentifiable. We could see where we thought we wanted to go and took the paths that

seemed to take us in that direction. We ended up crossing the creek and headed up to the canyon wall too soon and we had to backtrack. We headed deeper into the canyon and then we could see climbers up above climbing. We

laughed at ourselves that we manage to make at least one wrong turn every time we try to get to a climb at Red Rocks. The Pine Creek Canyon is lovely. A few big pine trees and smaller vegetation blanket the narrowing canyon floor, it isn’t

The happy Yellow Lab played in the creek for hours as his people climbed a difficult route called “Risky Business”. This climb looked risky because it is very steep and is thin for things to cling and grip. Notice that crossing the creek is required to start climbing the canyon’s wall. Risky Business paralleled our route and I could watch them while I climbed and belayed. desert here. At the base of our climb, aptly named Dark Shadows because the canyon walls keep it in the cool shade nearly all day, we had to get in line. Two groups were already on the climb and another pair of men were waiting for their turn. This is a traditional climbing route that requires placing of nuts and cams in cracks for protection. We sat down and waited and watched the climbers. About ten minutes later another couple arrived and they sat down to wait too. Splash, splash crash! A quick yellow Lab carrying a big stick had jumped into the pool of water just below our perch. His climbers left him behind to play as they tackled a difficult

route that started just to the left of the route we’d be doing. We waited an hour and a half for our turn and all the time the dog entertained us with its happy play in the water. The climb begins by stepping over the creek that runs between the wall and the large boulder we were sitting on while waiting. You don’t want to misstep and get wet feet and it is tricky. I watched and learned from the climbers that began ahead of us. Charlie climbed up to where he could establish an anchor and belay me as I climbed; and one of the men ahead of us was belaying his partner there too. I thought it was crowded for the three of us but then three more See patenaude on 33

repelling device. Charlie hooked up first and then he watched me arrange my set up. I don’t practice this in the climbing gym but I probably should. The Dark Shadows climb lasted about 3.5 hours. I greedily drank an entire liter of water, I didn’t realize how thirsty I was.

People were still waiting for their turn to climb. We hiked leisurely back to the car and looked back many times into Pine Creek Canyon and up where we had climbed. In the late afternoon sun the lizards scurried across our path. We also found the right route between the two big boulders.

Out of the canyon we crossed the desert and more cactus blossoms had burst open. The next day we rested and enjoyed a scenic drive to Death Valley. Have Fun.

people repelled down and joined us before continuing their repel to the bottom. Ropes are only so long and this climb required 4 pitches. We searched the other side of the canyon’s wall for big horn sheep but we didn’t see any but a humming bird came by and buzzed us. This sandstone wall was vertical and tall. I was nervous, this was a big climb and it is a popular and crowded. The pair above us was gone and now the leader of the pair below us had joined us. This gal was leading for her first time. I strained my neck watching Charlie and trying to pay attention to what he was doing so I could try to do the same when it was my turn. I confess it was easy to get distracted. To my left the yellow Lab’s Spidermen climbers were breathtakingly clinging to the wall and I couldn’t believe what they were achieving. Below me I watched the gal struggling to place protection in the cracks and drag the rope behind her as she climbed. Charlie is smooth. This climb was an easy climb for him. For me it was at the limit of my skill level. I didn’t uncomfortably struggle but I did work hard. As I belayed

Charlie on the last pitch I didn’t worry about how silly high we were up on the wall. I worried about the gal below me because she was having serious issues. When she stood beside me on the ledge that barely had room for both of us she explained that she didn’t have the small pieces of protection that would work on this part of the climb and she was forced to free climb a great distance above the last piece of protection she had placed. She was scared and she was rattled. Any uneasy feelings I had were so minor in comparison and I was having fun. I liked watching Charlie climb. I liked the feel of the sandstone when I gripped it and my rubber shoes stuck to it strong. The colors of the canyon were nothing like we see at home. And gosh, way in the distance I could see the skyscrapers on the Las Vegas strip! Once on top with Charlie I knew that the climb was only half over. Since there were so many others climbing behind us we could only hang out and enjoy the view for a few minutes. Repelling is serious business. Checking anchors, positioning our gear and ropes and we each used a Prusik knot as a backup locking hitch while descending on the ropes with our

The Beehivers took to Twitter to label Ray a “30-minute meal hoe” among other diatribes, which continue despite the attackers being told of the mistaken identity. Ray, Roy. What difference does it make? Watch out, all you Rachel Reys and Rachel Ruys out there. You’re next. The bitter bees show no signs of letting up -- and Beyonce’s silence about the vicious vendetta of her swarm speaks volumes. Her own personal army of Bernard Goetzes now suspects British singer and former Jay-Z protege Rita Ora of being the other other woman. “Rita Ora must die” and “Rita Ora, I hope you die” are among the sweeter sentiments now clogging her social media accounts. Twitter recently vowed

to improve its policing of hate speech recently. But its commitment is as full of holes as a honeycomb. Loud-mouthed rapper Azaelia Banks got a pass just a few weeks ago after tweeting that former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin should be gang-raped. That tells you all you need to know about whether the politically correct micro-messaging platform will filter out The Queen’s filthy minions. sion of Life. For those that believe in a higher entity, Personhood makes perfect sense. For those that do not believe in a higher entity, we can hope they will someday see the light. But, I believe we must especially bring this debate to those who espouse being Pro Life, only to sell out their personal beliefs under the guise of incrementalism or political correctness. They are selling out the cause of Life and in doing so, have inflicted serious injury to the Life movement. As difficult as it may be to hear pro-abortion supporters discuss how it is a woman’s right to take the life of their own baby, the most damage in the Life debate has been inflicted by those who supposedly share a prolife stance. The politician who says, “well, personally, I am Pro-Life, BUT…” is the worst kind of pandering to the Life debate. beyond building a wall and fighting the Republican establishment. Just the thought of Trump appointing justices of the Supreme Court, who will have lifetime tenure and make decisions, for decades, that will determine whether we will still be a free people, should sober up all who have not been irretrievably hypnotized by rhetoric or so embittered by the betrayals of the Republican establishment that they can see little else, including life and death issues. For conservatives especially, there is finally a real choice for a change -and a sharp contrast with Donald Trump. Senator Ted Cruz has a track record that leaves no doubt as to his adherence to conservative principles. And he is as thoroughly versed in the issues facing this country as anyone who has run for President since Ronald Reagan. Has Senator Cruz been flawless? Certainly not, and this column has more than once pointed out some of those flaws. But he has both the principles and the intellect for the job. Given the alternatives -- Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton -- that should be more than enough this election year. The outcome of this Tuesday’s primaries may tell us whether the voters want to vent their feelings or to choose someone to lead the nation in a time of dangers, at home and abroad.
