Super Hero Week In Dover

The Holy Grail Is Feeling Right At Home In The Lakes Region by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

When David and Maureen Kennedy were looking for a location to open a new restaurant they weren’t planning on it being a church. “We were looking for commercial property in Epping since we saw the

area was expanding and the Church was the only thing available that we thought we could turn into a restaurant,” said David. It was 2006 when they did purchase the building and after almost two years of renovations, the Holy Grail’s first location was open for business and soon proved a success.

Now looking to expand, the idea of renovating an old church into a restaurant was the obvious theme and in 2014 a second church, the former Evangelical Baptist Church (originally built in1836) in downtown Laconia was purchased and opened in May of 2015 as the Holy Grail of the Lakes. (The

Baptist Church moved to a larger facility in Lakeport.) When the Epping Holy Grail first opened, some locals were concerned about the change in use from a church to a restaurant. “A lot of people in town didn’t know what we were going to be,” said David of See grail on 32

Horror and Hush-Up in Twin Falls, Idaho Something wicked happened in Idaho’s rural Magic Valley. The evil has been compounded by politicians, media and by Michelle Malkin special interSyndicated Columnist est groups doing their damnedest to suppress the story and quell a righteous citizen rebellion. On June 7, a brief news item appeared on local Twin Falls, Idaho-based KMVT about a “reported sexual assault that possibly occurred near the Fawnbrook Apartments” five days earlier. Unconfirmed accounts of the alleged crime on conservative-leaning websites, plus reports from area members of anti-jihad activist Brigitte Gabriel’s Act for America group and longtime watchdog Ann Corcoran’s Refugee Resettlement Watch blog, culminated in coverage on the powerhouse Drudge Report. The social media groundswell, untethered from the constraints of political correctness, forced government authorities to respond. Police and the local prosecutor’s office grudgingly confirmed that an investigation had begun into the incident. The victim: A mentally disabled 5-year-old girl. The alleged perpetrators: Three boys, ages 7, 10 and 14, from Sudanese and Iraqi immigrant families (predominantly Muslim) who have been in the country for less than two years -- all but confirming that they are refugees. What happened? The case is under seal because it involves minors, but prosecutor Grant Loebs

said there is videotape of the alleged sexual assault (a fact which local activists first divulged). Two of the boys are in custody. It’s not clear what happened to the third. Here’s the sickening thing: The people who should have been asking tough questions -- like, you know, mainstream journalists -have spent more time attacking local whistleblowers and bloggers than they have spent demanding answers and holding public officials accountable. Why? Consider the backdrop. Residents in Twin Falls have been worried about the impact of an increasing influx of refugees, many from jihad-coddling countries, over the past several years. Their concerns about crime, P r e s i welfare, health care, and schools dent Baecho those of communities across rack Obama the country who are bearing the desperately coercive brunt of Beltway bleedwanted to be ing hearts’ refugee resettlement a peacetime policies enacted in a shroud of president, yet secrecy. is ending his Members of the Twin Falls City second term Council smugly likened refugee with Islamic resettlement critics to “white su- by Rich Lowry Syndicated Columnist terror attacks premacists.” Regional newspapers looming larger including the Idaho Statesman and the Spokane Spokesman- than at any time since 9/11. He Hasn’t Kept Us Safe about the terror threat. But with two domestic terror attacks in the past six months killing more than 60 people and wounding more than 70, the long stretch of safety at home is harder to dismiss. The rise of terror attacks within the U.S. -- in addition to the mayhem in San Bernardino and Orlando, there has been a drumbeat of smaller attacks -- corresponds with ISIS conquering and holding swaths of territory in Syria and Iraq. It isn’t a coincidence. John McCain and other hawks warned so often during the Iraq War that if we retreated in the face of the jihadi threat overseas it would follow us home, the argument began to lose its force. But they were right. It is an iron law of nature that if a group like ISIS gets a safe haven, it will use it to train, recruit and propagandize for terror attacks against the West. President Obama’s view is that attacks like the one on the Pulse nightclub aren’t an existential See lowry on 30

Iran Buying American Boeings UNITED NATIONS

- It’s a deal! The Islamic Republic of Iran is set to buy 100 American made Boeing civilian airliners for a price tag near by John J. Metzler $25 billion. Syndicated Columnist The sale which has been quietly in the works for some months now, can be directly linked to last Summer’s Iran nuclear accord reached in Vienna by the United States and five other powers which in effect trades Tehran’s presumed nuclear transparency for a lifting of stifling economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Why am I not surprised? So here we see the business bottom line to the nuclear accord; opening Iran’s alluring marketplace to the flood of commerce from America, Europe and the Far East. The final step came back in January after the Obama Administration gave a green light to formally lift sanctions on sales to Iran’s civil aviation. The landmark agreement is the biggest business deal between Iran and the USA since 1979 when the Islamic revolution of Ayatollah Khomeini toppled the reformist rule of the Shah installing a radical anti-American regime whose heirs remain in power to this day. The aircraft are slated for the national airline Iran Air, the oldest airline in the Middle East and once a top notch civilian carrier whose fleet has aged and needs serious

renovation. Most of the new passenger planes will be long range 777’s or leased short range 737’s. Currently most of Iran Air’s fleet consists of pre-1980 Boeings and twenty newer but second hand Airbus craft. Naturally, the Chicago-based Boeing adds the usual legal caveat, “Boeing will continue to follow the lead of the U.S. government with regards to working with Iran’s airlines, and any and all contracts with Iran’s airlines will be contingent upon U.S. government approval.” But let’s be frank: opening the lucrative Iranian market, especially the near U.S. dominated aircraft sales sector, was one of Washington’s key objectives in last year’s nuclear agreement between five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany in which the Islamic Republic purportedly stopped its nuclear weapons program in return for a lifting of sanctions. The European consortium Airbus also plans to sell planes to Iran. Why expansion now? Iran Air is now looking to widen its route network beyond the Middle East and Europe to include the USA, Canada, and Australia. Plans include serving the huge Iranian diaspora which fled after the 1979 revolution and are numerous in California and New York as well as an expected surge of other American tourists which are expected to visit this ancient land once relations improve. Though there’s a growing potential among Iranian-Americans based on nostalgia, there’s little doubt

that Iran Air which brands itself as “the Airline of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” clearly needs to remake its slogan and image. Iran Air continued to fly its routes to the USA even after the revolution but service was suspended after Is-

lamic militants seized and trashed the American Embassy in Tehran in November 1979 leading to the subsequent Hostage Crisis during the Carter Administration. Not surprisingly, there’s growing

The Gun Control Farce Surely murder is a serious subject, which ought to be examined seriously. Instead, it is almost always examined politically in the context of by Thomas Sowell gun control Syndicated Columnist controversies, with stock arguments on both sides that have remained the same for decades. And most of those arguments are irrelevant to the central question: Do tighter gun control laws reduce the murder rate? That is not an esoteric question, nor one for which no empirical evidence is available. Think about it. We have 50 states, each with its own gun control laws, and many of those laws have gotten either tighter or looser over the years. There must be tons of data that could indicate whether murder rates went up or down when either of these things happened. But have you ever heard any gun control advocate cite any such data? Tragically, gun control has become one of those fact-free issues that spawn outbursts of emotional rhetoric and mutual recriminations about the National Rifle Association or the Second Amendment. If restrictions on gun ownership do reduce murders, we can repeal the Second Amendment, as other Constitutional Amendments have been repealed. Laws exist to protect people. People do not exist to perpetuate laws. But if tighter restrictions on gun ownership do not reduce murders, what is the point of tighter gun control laws -- and what is the point of demonizing the National Rifle Association? There are data not only from our 50 states but also from other

countries around the world. Professor Joyce Lee Malcolm’s empirical study, “Guns and Violence: The English Experience,” should be eye-opening for all those who want their eyes opened, however small that number of people might be. Professor Malcolm’s book also illustrates the difference between isolated, cherry-picked facts and relevant empirical evidence. Many gun control advocates have cited the much higher murder rates in the United States than in England as due to tighter gun control laws in England. But Professor Malcolm’s study points out that the murder rate in New York has been some multiple of the murder rate in London for two centuries -- and, during most of that time, neither city had serious restrictions on gun ownership. As late as 1954, “there were no controls on shotguns” in England, Professor Malcolm reported, but only 12 cases of armed robbery in London. Of these only 4 had real guns. But in the remainder of the 20th century, gun control laws became ever more severe -- and armed robberies in London soared to 1,400 by 1974. “As the numbers of legal firearms have dwindled, the numbers of armed crimes have risen” is her summary of that history in England. Conversely, in the United States the number of handguns in American homes more than doubled between 1973 and 1992, while the murder rate went down. There are relevant facts available, but you are not likely to hear about them from politicians currently pushing for tighter gun control laws, or from the mainstream media, when those facts go against the claims of gun control advocates. Despite hundreds of thousands of times a year when Americans use firearms defensively, none of See Sowell on 30

To The Editor: People are saying that the FBI “failed” by not stopping the Orlando shooter. Should he have been arrested before committing a crime? We’re heading that way. The state of Massachusetts jailed a pregnant women because they thought she’d killed 2 previous newborns but had no proof. We put released sexual offenders on “don’t live near schools or parks” lists because they “might” offend again. Should we lock people up because they “might?” If we declared war on ISIS, communicating with ISIS would be treason and we could lock ‘em up fair and square, but our leaders don’t want to admit it’s war. Because They Might?

To The Editor: An AR-15 was not used in the recent Orlando Terror shooting. Despite that, this has been repeated early and often, including in local letters to editor. It’s amazing what misinformation passes for knowledge sometimes. The clear goal of gun-ban crowd is to take guns out of good guys’ hands to allow more of these shootings. A good guy with a gun

is your surest protection. AR stands for “ArmaLite Rifle”, not Assault Rifle (ArmaLite was the original designer and manufacturer). Automatic weapons are illegal in the USA. There were many warning signs of this situation that were either not reported or followed up, each of which could have disarmed the shooter, and avoided every casualty. David Martin Dover, NH

A Lot To Digest To The Editor: In 1513 Spanish explore Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Florida. He landed at St. Augustine which claims to be the oldest continuously settled City in the Unit States. Followed by Jamestown Virginia 1607 and Santa Fe New Mexico also 1607. Though he went looking for the fountain of youth it was not what he was sent to do. It was to bring the word of God to the New World. So what I’m trying to understand is the comment “Leftists don’t seem to think our Nation’s Judeo-Christian culture, which they constantly denigrate, is constantly denigrate; that all cultures e.g., Mexican, Muslim, Chinese etc., are as good as ours”. Wow.. There is a lot to digest here. Not only this

The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Cocheco Valley area with the new Cocheco Times. comment by the author but the rest of the letter that went with it. I may not be the brightest star in the night sky but when our culture was being formed, the people group’s listed above were also living in this great land. I think this would also make them apart of our culture. I have been to Mexico, Peru, Gautama, Haiti, China, Malaysia, Philippines and most European countries. I have lived, worked and vacationed with these people. I failed to see the people I know, in the author’s comments. For two summers we had two university student’s from Slovenia stay with us. One of them Peter was very surprised to see that American’s had little knowledge of worldly events and more so the lack of knowledge regarding American History. My suggestion to Don and those that find his editorial to be spot on, would be to travel beyond Fox News and export the world we live in. Meet the people that live in it. There is a lot to learn from them. If I may quote Mark Twain “travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness”. John Brennick Rochester NH

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Day Of Reckoning

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Well, it’s finally upon us. I never thought that I would see the day. If you have been living under a rock not only must you be very uncomfortable, but you also may not realize that next week is the big convention by the Flatlander Party to choose their candidate to run for governor. I have to admit I’m a bit nervous. Yes, we always have these conventions, but they have mostly been small affairs held around the table at a Subway shop in the western part of the state. Four or five of us (depending on what size table is available) sit down to some foot-long subs, a soda and a chocolate chip cookie and go through the motions of nominating…well….me as I was the only one that was ever running. We could forego the gathering all together, but the protocol of our convention rules insist on a gathering of at least this nature (there has been some controversy over this rule since the head of the rules committee also owns the Subway franchise, but it soon passed when he also offered a ten percent discount). This year it is all different as there are two of us running for the nomination. (I refuse to mention my opponent by name so as to give him the benefit of extra publicity.) The Flatlander Party doesn’t have a primary election since we never

needed one and the cost of organizing the whole thing was way beyond out budget (even with the ten percent discount at our nominating luncheon). Our rules never addressed the situation of having more than one candidate, so we quickly made some up. We will be meeting next Tuesday night, July 5th, in the basement of one member whose wife will be away for the week visiting her mother in Iowa. His was chosen since it was big enough to handle the twenty or so we are expecting. There will be at least one delegate from each of the counties in New Hampshire and a few will be bringing dates since they had already made plans. My opponent and myself will each have five minutes to address the crowd and then there will be allowed two speakers to chime in in support of each of us. After that, the delegates will all meet upstairs in the family room to discuss the nominees and then will return to the basement for a vote. After all is said and done, there will be Subway sandwiches, sodas and chocolate chip cookies for everyone. Of course, we have all pledged to stay an additional half hour after the convention is finished to clean up so as to make sure the member who contributed the space doesn’t catch all sorts of heck from his wife when she gets home. (I’ve met her, she can be pretty rough.) One of the stipulations is that it is to be a clean fight. There are to be no derogatory remarks made by one candidate against another (unless, of course, they have video to back it up). A simple majority is all that is needed and the sandwiches will only be either Turkey or Tuna,

no cheesesteaks, even though the discussion on that was pretty contentious. I have been working on my speech for about a week now. I realize it might be the only chance I have to sway a few votes my way, though I admit it will be hard to talk about just myself and not spend most of my time slandering my opponent (unfortunately my team hasn’t discovered any videos… yet). It certainly won’t be politics as usual. I did forget to mention that there will be a press section at the convention. We have roped off a small section of the basement with a bungee cord and we figure we can squeeze in two or three local reporters. It will be good to have a little publicity. We are ordering three extra tuna sandwiches to dangle in front of their noses in the hopes of getting them there. What will happen is anyone’s guess. Besides the fact that all of the sandwiches will be on Italian bread, no one can predict anything that will happen. We are certainly hoping that things don’t get out of control and any furniture gets broken. There is no one in the Flatlander Party who would want to be that member once his wife gets home if that were to happen. Win or lose, I will accept whatever happens. Will I be called on to carry the torch for the Flatlander party again or will I be forced to sit on the sidelines and praise my opponent through gritted teeth? Only time will tell. I’ll keep you posted. To find out more about Brendan’s book and upcoming appearances go to www.BrendanTSmith. com

At a time of partisan elections in Laconia the first Independent was elected to the Laconia City by Niel Young Advocates Columnist Council in November 1973. The Establishment Republicans did not like the outsider becoming a member of a governing body. There was a lot to learn about partisanship politics in my first term as a member of the NH House. Republicans were expected, as with the Democrats, to follow “leadership”. Gee, and all that time some of us thought our goal was to listen to our constituents and then the hearings, to determine which way to vote. Live with the decision. Would this piece of legislation reduce the freedom of NH residents, or what is this going to cost the businesses, and property taxes for all taxpayers of NH? From that first meeting of the city council it was a question of want or need re: spending OPM – spending other people’s money? ******** What does the GOP stand for? Why would one want to belong to this group? In 1994 I was talked into challenging incumbent State Senator Leo Fraser in the Republican primary. When I lost – by only 63 votes District wide – my statement to Donn Tibbetts (Union Leader) was: “It is imperative that the seat be filled by a Republican”. Next day came a call from GOP Chairman Duprey. Steve thanked me for my words, and said “this will pay big dividends

for you”. I was not looking for ‘dividends’ just a political party that cares about the text of the NH Party Platform, and the US Constitution. Over the years since, the GOP has become a party of ‘Establishment’ types. The, look at me, I am important. Can’t you hear them now? “Why just last month I dined with the Bushes, the Sununus, the Scammans and the Greggs.” And that “one tent” Fergus Cullen fellow, who told Ted Cruz “do not, darken my door”! Due to the lack action from the amoeba republicans going back to Bush “W” GOP Senate and Congress they have turned the gop into a non-entity. MY country, my wife and children, and our grandchildren will suffer because you – our leaders – were so scared, they did little to nothing to stop what is being planned for us. I was a strong supporter for Cruz and the Establishment treated him like dirt. That must be what the Establishment thinks of me, too. ******** DAN TUOHY New Hampshire Union Leader: “Two New Hampshire Republicans have released an open letter urging fellow Republicans and business leaders to SUPPORT Hillary Clinton, and not presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.” One of the two is Wayne Presby, owner and president of the Mount Washington Railway Company. The other is a familiar name here in Senate District 7. I often joke about the marriage a Democrat a Republican as a mixed marriage! DAN TOUHY: “They pick up on a Clinton attack line from earlier this week, in which she

denigrated the billionaire real estate developer’s success, or a “facade,” as Presby and Hosmer put it. “I am asking you today to put our communities, our economy, and our businesses ahead of party affiliation,” they write. “We both voted for Republican candidates in the presidential primary this year, but neither of us believed we would see Donald Trump become the nominee of our party.” SO, IT IS ABOUT MONEY!! TOUHY: “Donna Hosmer, an owner of three car dealerships, cosigned the letter posted on Medium Thursday.” ******* Donna, I could care less about the Republican Party. YOU assume. “Communities, our economies, our businesses” you write. Where is the part about our SECURITY FROM Middle East, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and other lands who threaten us, and OUR brave military? Dear readers, do you do know that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce does not have a problem with Illegal Immigration!

“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty. – President John F. Kennedy The Fourth of July commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring that the thirteen American colonies were a new nation, the United States of America. Many Americans, as part of the celebration of our country’s birth, also take the time to honor and appreciate those who have fought for the freedoms we hold dear. They recognize that Freedom Isn’t Free. Military service requires sacrifices of many kinds, and commemorative days such as the Fourth provide opportunities to reflect on

Happy

Independence Day those sacrifices with gratitude and to demonstrate remembrance and support for those who have served. Our small state of NH has over 115,000 veterans, not including those who are currently serving or their families. We thank those who have and are serving for preserving the liberties that were won for us 240 years ago. For some veterans, these celebratory days can be difficult, with the inescapable (and often unpredictable) booms, cracks and hisses. And it can be difficult for some veterans’ families when their loved ones cannot or will not participate in the American traditions aimed to celebrate the very freedoms for which the veteran fought. Fireworks can be especially tough for combat veterans because of the unexpected timing of them and their reminiscence of enemy fire. For some combat veterans, even the town display can be intolerable. The whistles, cracklings, sparks in the sky, and chest pounding booms can cause very specific reactions to some very specific memories. Understanding and encouraging veterans to take good care of themselves during this time is helpful, even if it means they do not join in the “fun. Here are a couple suggestions for making these celebrations easier on those who find this holiday hard : fireworks can be easier to handle if they are predictable and visible. The town fireworks display has a clear beginning and an end. - Keep the at-home fireworks to a minimum. Your town probably spends a

lot of money each year on a wonderful display, enjoy it! - If you do light fireworks at home or in your neighborhood: try to light them only within the July 3rd to July 5th window, alert your neighbors to let them know what time you will be setting them off and what time they will end, and stop the fireworks by 2 hours past dusk. Get out there and celebrate our independence! Do so proudly, but respectfully to those veterans around you. Healthy Tip From Dr. Fink:

Getting Your Best Nights Sleep

by Dr. Charles Fink

Fink Chiropractic & Natural Health Improvement Center

The average person spends about one third of their life sleeping. However, there are millions of people who suffer from either not enough sleep or poor sleep. This can have a variety of consequences ranging from depression, cardiovascular disease, digestive problems, gastric reflux, muscle aches, headaches, allergies, irritability just to name a few. They may find it hard to think clearly or focus and have either a lack of appetite or the munchies. Many of us are guilty of sabotaging ourselves in a number of ways such as eating foods that disagree with us making it difficult to lie down, let alone go to sleep. Other ways of interfering with sleep are watching television in bed, leaving the television, radio or computer on or sporadic sleep schedules. Often people who alternate work shifts find it difficult to sleep. Stress can be another big factor in sleep deprivation and as we become more sleep deprived our stress levels rise. When we sleep our bodies produce HGH, hum a n g rowth hormone and other natural hormones. These are important for energy, weight loss and pain tolerance.

Continued lack of sleep can have profound consequences and can make recovering from an injury difficult. Some common sleep stoppers are improper planning or irregular bed times, uncomfortable beds and sheets, unexpected stress, everyday stress, such as job stress and money. Some other causes may be lack of sex, improper diet, injury, pain, noise, some medications and long naps during the day. Some tips for a better nights sleep are getting regular chiropractic treatments, eat 2 to 3 hours before bed and try to avoid heavy greasy foods and sugary desserts. Cut back on the caffeine, a rule of thumb is no caffeine after noon if you are having difficulty sleeping. A dark room with some white noise (a fan in the corner of your room) can often make a difference. The white noise can cover the sounds of traffic, a neighbors barking dog or rooster that crows in the wee hours of the morning. Try to keep your workouts to earlier in the day as a lot of activity may prevent you from being able to get to sleep. There are a variety of natural sleep aids available but it is best to have someone oversee the use of these as they can have negative results if not used properly. Drinking a relaxing tea in the evening, a bath, turning down the lights and avoiding those high energy shows on television may help to put you to sleep. If you are a planner and find that as soon as you lie down you

start to think of things you want or need to do, keep a pad of paper and pen on your night stand. Write it down and forget about it. When you get up in the night to use the bathroom don’t turn the lights on. Have some very low nightlights strategically placed so that you won’t wake up too much and be able to get back to sleep fairly quickly. If you are getting up several times a night you should talk to your doctor. Your Health is in Your Hands by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

Fourth of July weekend is upon us. Everyone, obviously, thinks of fireworks, cook outs, and this year a Monday off of work. While these things are great, they are not what makes the July 4th wonderful. This is a great holiday, because I truly believe that we live in the best country in the world. It’s important because we remember when 13 colonies declared their status as an independent nation. It’s our collective national birthday. With the birth of this nation came a freedom that isn’t available in many countries. This freedom came at a cost, of course. And, frankly, it still does! Many have sacrificed their time, efforts, and even their lives to protect it. I am truly grateful to all who allow us to have our continued freedom. The question that comes to mind then: how do we live in a way that honors this freedom? I think we can do this in a few ways: 1) Give thanks and respect to our military personnel. If you have a veteran in your life, tell them thank you and pay them the appropriate respect. These are the men and women who set aside their own lives, to protect us and our way of life. What better way to honor your freedom, then to recognize the source? 2) Live your ideal life. I think it’s easy to get caught in a bad cycle of work, sleep, repeat. Everyone works hard to make ends. This is understandable, and necessary, but at some point

we may cease to live the life we want for the life we are stuck in. I know this is a hard one, because we have responsibilities and bills. Yet, if we just become our work, if we are always feeling “busy, and we stop having joy, then on some level I feel like we waste the freedom bestowed upon us. The point is, we honor our freedom, by living happy, productive, passionate lives. If you look at your life and it isn’t what you want: change it. Maybe you wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle, paint a picture, or visit a foreign country. Time is not unlimited. Don’t use your days waiting for what’s next, but rather figure out what you want and get it.

3) Choose health. This is a big one. If we lead an unhealthy life, then we squander that life. Most disease is lifestyle related. Some argue that as much as 90% of chronic disease is due to lifestyle choices. This means that the choices we make: smoking, weight management, exercise, stress levels, sleep habits, and diet quality all determine our long term health. Further, it means you have the majority vote in your health. If we choose poorly, then we will be unhealthy, if we choose well, then results will follow. If we don’t choose well, it affects not only ourselves, but out friend, families, and community. We have the power and freedom to make these choices, so do it! You aren’t a prisoner to any bad habit. 4) Fix your mindset. So much of the quality of your life is determined by the outlook of your mind. It’s easy to get weighed down by daily stresses. The car is broke, there is a million errands to be done, etc. It’s possible in our world to be overcome by depression, stress, and anxiety. Honor your freedom, by choosing to think about your problems dif-

ferently. Very little attention is given to the value your thought life plays in your day to day life, but this is a mistake, in my opinion. When bad times come, you can either face them with a deep breath and a positive mindset, or you can let it drag your brain down into the mud. Which do you think is going to take you farther? My encouragement to you is this: enjoy the freedoms, that have been given to us, by living a life worthy of that sacrifice. Being a citizen of a free country is a great gift. Be healthy, be happy, honor others. Give of yourself. Know that you are blessed to be born a free person. We have a duty, born out of respect, to earn our freedom by living good lives. I hope you all have a happy, healthy Fourth of July. Be safe, have fun, and always remember to live a life that reflects your freedom.

e f a S , e l b a i l e R e v i s n o p s e R & A grand mountain vista awaits for you at the top of Bald Ledge high above Winona Lake after a pleasant walk of just 8/10th of a mile. The trail begins at the end of the maintained section of Sky Pond Road near the Sky Pond boat launch. The path travels through the Sky Pond State Forest to the Ledge’s viewpoint that is part of the Town of New Hampton conservation lands. Not far from downtown Ashland and actually in New Hampton is Sky Pond and Sky Pond State Forest. I followed the directions given to me by a friend. I later learned that this trail is included in the AMC’s Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide. I knew I was getting close to Sky Pond when the paved road turned into a gravel road and I saw a brown and white sign of a canoe pointing the way to the boat launch. Before reaching the end of the maintained portion of Sky Pond Road the boat launch is clearly on the right. There is lots of room to park and there are decent composting toilets. I took a peek at the pretty pond and learned at the nearby kiosk that only fly-fishing is allowed. No one else was around

Seemingly forgotten because of the event of July 4th, 1776 is a historic event that took place in January of that year in New Hampshire. The citizens of New Hampshire in the years leading up to that event were apparently not particularly anxious to break their ties with Great Britain, but by 1775 they had to have felt that the time had come to sever ties with a country that had put unfair burdens upon them. Leaders in England, which had been successful in adding much territory to its possessions, including all of the American colonies, which were then officially under its dominion. England had accumulated huge debt and felt it only fair that the colonies should be taxed to help pay off that debt. The colonies, on the other hand, resisted the policy of being taxed without any representation in the English government. The mother countries’ desire to control its subjects and the colonies’ desire to govern their own affairs resulted in unrest and conflict. So, in keeping New Hampshire’s tradition of wanting to be first, a Congress of the state met in Exeter on January 5, 1776 to adopt a state constitution, making New Hampshire the

Recently, this column pronounced that cans are a better idea than glass bottles‌ A few things to note about cans; they are not made the same as your grandfather’s Schaffer cans back in the day. The lightweight aluminum is coated with a fine protective layer to keep the metal from the liquid. They store well, travel well, chill fast and are recyclable. And most importantly, if you drop a can, it won’t shatter into a thousand shards of glass! And this is why 603 Brewery has made the important move to keep their beer freshest in cans. Blue Jays, Friend Or Foe? by Steve White Contributing Writer

Many backyard birders have a favorite song bird. Based on our customer’s inquiries in New Hampshire, the chickadee, cardinal and hummingbird top the list. The average backyard has the ability to attract over 25 different species of wild birds each and every day, no matter what the season. How to attract each species depends on your natural environment, feeder and seed selections. For some birders, socalled nuisance birds can be a concern due to intense flocking and the monopolization of bird feeders created by mobbing activity.Starlings and grackles are the usual culprits of these observations. The blue jay has an interesting following. You either love them or can do without them. The middle ground doesn’t seem to exist when discussing this song bird.It is the most misunderstood backyard visitor. We would like to use today’s column to explain these unique birds. Consider the blue jay as you would an older sibling. An older brother or sister can be protectors or bullies, depending on the situation at hand. If someone is perceived to be a threat to you at sometime during your life, you would expect your older siblings to stand up for you as they offer protection. However, there may be times when these same protectors can push you around or bully you

into an unwise activity due to your younger age or diminutive size. Blue jays are the older brother or sister to most birds in the wild. Whenever danger presents itself, the blue jays will be the first to sound the warning call. Have you ever observed a hawk flying around your area looking for prey, only to be mobbed by dozens of blue jays? These protectors of the sky will force birds of prey to change their feeding zones away from the blue jays’ designated territories. In this instance, these birds are accomplishing the same goal as an older sibling aiding a younger family member. In other instances, blue jays will literally bully their way into any backyard and monopolize bird feeders until they have had their fill. Blue jays love to announce their arrival with a raucous, causing all other birds to scatter. Hence, the bully characteristic that so many customers attribute to this species. Love or leave them, the blue jay has a unique place in the wild bird society that many humans may not understand. Without this bird in every backyard, many other species would probably fall prey to hawks, cats, and other threats to song bird survival. In many circumstances, you will hear chipmunks chipping and blue jays squawking in chorus whenever the same danger has entered the area. Together, these two very different species join forces as early warning detectors. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located

on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. Steve White is a contributing author in major publications, a guest lecturer at major conventions in Atlanta and St. Louis as well as the host of WEZS 1350AM radio show “Bird Calls” with Lakes Region Newsday @ 8:30AM. DEAR TIM: My wife has instructed me that I no longer can put off the deck project. I’ve got the confidence to do all the work above ground, but I’m worried about the deck foundation. What do I need to know about deck pier forms so my deck posts don’t sink into the ground? I see round and square pieces of concrete under the posts at other decks I look at. It that all you do, just place a precast concrete disc under the post and be done with it? --Eric B., Long Island, N.Y. DEAR ERIC: Think of your deck as you would any structure. Perhaps you’ve seen houses next to the coast where you live that resemble tables. The houses sit up above the ground on large wooden or concrete posts so the storm surge flows under them. These support columns are not very different than your deck posts. They all transfer the load of the structures to the soil below. Decks need foundations just like houses,

the deck is complete and you have lots of people, furniture, snow and so forth on it, the load at each post can exceed several thousand pounds. Properly designed and constructed deck piers ensure the deck doesn’t sink or get uplifted by wind! The concrete you see at the surface under deck posts ought to continue deep down into the soil. The depth the concrete extends is a function of the frost line in the area and the bearing capacity of the soil. What’s more, there’s a good chance that deep in the ground the concrete is wider than what you see at the top to help spread out the load across more square inches of soil. I’ve installed all sorts of deck pier forms in my career. It was not unusual to dig a large 2-foot by 2-foot hole and pour about 6 or 8 inches of concrete in the bottom of the hole. This concrete was a small spread footing.

The next day we’d then lay concrete block on top of the hardened concrete. The hollow cores of the block would be then filled with more concrete. A steel anchor bolt would then be inserted in the wet concrete. This anchor bolt would hold down a metal connector used to fasten the wood deck posts to the new concrete pier. Many years ago inventors tried to make all this easier. Round concrete forms that look like giant paper towel roll cores were sold to contractors. You can still buy these thick paper tubes. This was set on a similar concrete footer in the ground and acted as a handy form for wet concrete. You no longer had to lay concrete block. The issue with using one of these giant tubes is that you had to figure out how to brace it so it wouldn’t move as you poured concrete. It’s not as easy as you might think to do this. Then you had to figure out

how to get reinforcing steel into the tube in the right position. A few years ago I stumbled upon a new invention that makes installing deck piers as easy as working with snaptogether plastic building blocks children play with. This ingenious deck pier form snaps together in less than a minute with no tools. But wait, it gets better. The plastic form comes with internal slots and rings that support pieces of precut steel reinforcing bars that come with the form. In years past you had to get long bars of steel and then struggle to cut them. At least two pieces of the steel need to be bent to connect the vertical concrete pier to the wider concrete that forms the footing for the pier. It’s not as easy to bend this reinforcing steel as you might think. There are several types of plastic deck pier forms. With the ones I prefer, all you need to do is carefully place the

form at the correct depth so you meet the local building codes for frost protection and soil bearing capacity. Once you have the form in place and level, you carefully backfill the dirt around the form before you pour the concrete. What I love about these forms is how much time and effort they save. Everything you need, except for the concrete, is shipped to your home. You don’t have to drive to different places to get all the steel, forms, bracing, etc. You just dig the hole to the correct depth, place the form, carefully backfill so as not to move the form and start mixing concrete! It doesn’t get any easier than that. Be sure the anchor bolt you install in the wet concrete is hot dipped galvanized. You don’t want the bolt that holds the deck post connector to the pier to rust out over time. Take your time and double check all measurements to ensure you have your deck

piers in the correct location. The margin for error is usually less than 2 inches in any given direction! Need an answer? All of Tim’s past columns are archived for free at www. AsktheBuilder.com. You can also watch hundreds of videos, download Quick Start Guides and more, all for free.

continued down an old woods road. The path actually goes downhill for a ways and in places the brushy growth is making the old road narrow. Bolted to a post a small sign with red letters and an arrow pointing right read “Bald Ledge and the foot path obeyed. The path continues up through nice pine and spruce to reach the open ledge face of Bald Ledge. Wow! How could I have

never been here before? A nice walk of less of only 8/10th of a mile to a grand vista that reaches over Winona Lake all the way past Red Hill and over to the Squam, Sandwich and Ossipee Ranges. From another vantage I could see the Belknap Mountains. Far below on the Winona’s dark water I could see a couple of people fishing from a small boat. I wish I had the time to spend hours on this perch.

ES U Q I T AN

I had missed the sunrise by hours and the early hazy heavy morning air dulled the vista a little but it was a terrific bargain for an easy 20 minute walk. I think I could see the pieces of the blue waters of the Lakes of Squam, Waukewan and Winnipesaukee. Next time I am in the neighborhood on a crystal clear day I am definitely going to do this fun hike again. See patenaude on 29

At the end of the ledgy area I noticed another blazed path headed north and down. I followed it for a couple of tenths of a mile and passed by one small open ledge face. I decided I didn’t want to go all the way down to Lake Winona so I turned around and went back. I later learned that this less used path originates from Lake Road and is longer and quite steep and is not in the guide book. I retraced my steps back to my car and enjoyed the easy terrain and footing. Back at the pond I watched the sun sparkling on the water for a few minutes. I didn’t see any fish jumping

The legend of Winona is a story of the Algonquin Princess Winona that escaped from a Waukewan warrior by fleeing down the ledges to the frozen lake below. She fell through the thin ice and drowned to avoid being recaptured. The legend was well known and the lake was named for her. threat. While he certainly doesn’t want them to happen and finds them horrible and wrenching, they are the implicit price of what he conceives as a

prudently crafted antiISIS strategy -- in other words, one that doesn’t show much urgency about defeating the terror group and limits the resources devoted to fighting it.

So long as ISIS looks as though it is successfully resisting its enemies, though, it has a magnetic appeal to potential loyalists in the West. If it is impossible to snuff out the ideology of Islamic radicalism on the battlefield, it is possible to make it look much less alluring. No one likes a loser. ISIS will no longer have such perverse cachet as soon as it is crushed in the field. President Obama is certainly right that a San Bernardino or an Orlando isn’t going to bring the country to its knees, but he underestimates the price to American society. Do we want to live in a country where every county agency or nightclub feels compelled to deploy metal detectors and armed guards? President Bush used every tool in his power, from the Patriot Act, the NSA surveillance program and enhanced interrogations to relentless military operations overseas, in his zeal to protect the homeland. President Obama let up the pressure, and what he once dismissed as the JV team is exacting a terrible price. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.

those incidents is likely to be reported in the mainstream media, even when lives are saved as a result. But one accidental firearm death in a home will be broadcast and rebroadcast from coast to coast. Virtually all empirical studies in the United States show that tightening gun control laws has not reduced crime rates in general or murder rates in particular. Is this because only people opposed to gun control do empirical studies? Or is it because the facts uncovered in empirical studies make the arguments of gun control zealots untenable? In both England and the United States, those people most zealous for tighter gun control laws tend also to be most lenient toward criminals and most restrictive on police. The net result is that law-abiding citizens become more vulnerable when they are disarmed and criminals disobey gun control laws, as they disobey other laws. The facts are too plain to be ignored. Moreover, the consequences are too dangerous to law-abiding citizens, whose lives are put in jeopardy on the basis of fact-free assumptions and unexamined dogmas. Such arguments are a farce, but not the least bit funny. Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. His website is www.tsowell. com. clothes,” she recounted. Pro-mass immigration advocates may not like the sources of some of the original reporting that forced the case into the sunlight, but the watchdogs got more right than wrong. These critics now have Twin Falls’ political leaders sputtering to cover their backsides and police brass defending themselves against explosive charges that they dragged their feet. Instead, the “professional journalists” dwelt on a few early factual errors about whether the boys were from Syria and whether a knife was used -- and filled their dismissive articles with “can’t we all just get along” propaganda from refugee resettlement advocates and contractors with vested financial interests in the game. The callousness of local officials and indifference of local and national media reminds me very much of an international incident that went viral on YouTube earlier this year in the eastern German town of Bad Schlema -- located in a region overrun by Muslim refugees. A concerned grandfather whose granddaughter under the age of 10 was sexually harassed by Muslim migrants protested to mayor Jens Muller. In response to his plea for help, Muller told the elderly man to direct his family to “not walk in areas” where refugees would be. “Just don’t provoke them and don’t walk in those areas.” The grandfather lamented at the public meeting: “You’re not allowed to walk in your own city anymore.” To which the jaded mayor replied: “This is the way it is.” Thank goodness there are Americans still fighting against the collective shrug of sovereignty surrender. opposition to a Boeing deal with the national airline of a state sponsor of global terrorism, a supplier of troops and weapons to the regime side in the Syrian civil war, not to mention a flagrant persecutor of its own people. Congressman Peter Roskam R-IL, stated that members of Congress from both Illinois and Washington State where Boeing has its manufacturing facilities, nonetheless oppose the deal and shall try to block it. “If this moves forward, Boeing and terror will be intertwined, he stated adamantly. Congressman Roskam added, “It’s tragic to watch such an ionic American company make such a terribly short-sited decision. If Boeing goes through with this deal, the company will forever be associated with Iran’s chief export: radical Islamic terrorism. In his “No Dollars for Ayatollahs Act, introduced by Rep. Roskam, the congressman stresses in a statement, “My bill will prevent Iran from accessing U.S. dollars in any manner by imposing a 100% excise tax on any transactions which directly or indirectly enable the Islamic Republic to make financial transactions in American currency. The U.S. State Department continues to list Iran as a “State Sponsor of Terrorism. Naturally, there’s plenty of rationalization in the Obama Administration about creating American jobs and exports never mind assisting what Washington likes to imagine as a reformist Rohani government in Tehran as trying to open to the West after years of sanctions and isolation. Yet there’s a touch of irony too for any new Boeings flying to Iran; they will be landing at Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran. John J. Visit them at https://www.facebook. com/603Brewery/ or at their website at http:// www.603brewery.com NH Ale is a golden delicious visual treat. Super clean with a pillowy white head, this delightfully tasting, extremely drinkable beer will be added to your top 5 beer shopping list and being 5% ABV will allow you to try more than one. Balance might be the best way to describe NH Ale. There is no bittering flavor as in an IPA. And there are no fruity notes or malty overtones to get in the way. This is just a beautifully crafted beer that wants to be friends with you. NH Ale will be produced year-round which will also please those who enjoy it now but would miss it if it were only a seasonal. Since this is the very first review known of about NH Ale, BeerAdvocate.com has not yet rated it. But you can try it very soon as cans are due to hit

the shelves around mid July. Look for the inviting red can with the big 603 on it! Jim MacMillan is the owner of WonByOne Design of Meredith, NH, and is an avid imbiber of craft brews and a home brewer as well. Send him your recommendations and brew news to wickedbrews@weirs.com

more people are taken in by not only the fascinating ambience, but also the great food and family friendly atmosphere. “Our aim was always to have a family oriented atmosphere, said David. “We are not fast food looking to push people out of their seats. We want people to take their time and

enjoy the experience. It was that family oriented idea that got David and Maureen involved with the restaurant business in the first place. Both of Maureen’s parents were from Ireland and they came to America in the 1950s and were living in The Bronx, New York. Her dad drove a cab

Eventually he bought more bars and brought over more brothers to work. That was how Maureen got involved in the restaurant business. “I didn’t know anything about the business when we met, said David. “I was working in LA and Mau-

We eventually moved back to Boston and I went back to school to get my Masters Degree in Business. Maureen went to work at a restaurant in Faneuil Hall. “One day she came home to tell me they needed a bartender so I took a bartending course, said David. After time David and Maureen wanted to start a family and moved to Hampton, New Hampshire where they took over operating a 100-seat restaurant that was underneath a hotel owned by his brother-in-law. “We ran that one for two years, but it was hard being seasonal, said David. “It was like starting up a new restaurant every year so eventually we got out. It wasn’t until seven years later, David now a teacher at Exeter High School, that Maureen saw he wasn’t happy with the direction things were going so she encouraged him to look for another restaurant. David did research and decided that property in Epping would be the best bet and the rest is Holy Grail history. It took two years of renovations to get the Epping Holy Grail ready. “We did a lot of renovations but we wanted to keep the stained glass windows and some of the light fixtures and all of the religious artifacts were gone, said David. “We

were always aware of the sensitivities and we really just wanted to highlight the ambience and the uniqueness that the old church presented. It was also the menu that drew a lot of attention. In fact, the Holy Grail won the Platinum Plate from TV Diner and was featured on the Phantom Gourmet and New Hampshire Chronicle. Among some of the unique items is the Shepherd’s Pie which was taken from a recipe Maureen’s mom brought from Ireland. “We tweaked it a little to adjust to the American taste buds, said David. Looking for a second location for another Holy Grail started in 2014 and various locations were scouted out but none hit the mark as well as the Laconia location did in terms of ambience, space and accessibility to the downtown. It took about a year and a half as well as significant expense to get the Holy Grail Of The Lakes ready to open. “We had to put in an elevator as well as a fire system and we added a small addition in the back to complete the kitchen,” said David. “The bar and the booths are all made out of the original pews and the mantles of the fireplace from some old wooden beams. The light fixtures and the hostess stand came from an old church in West Virginia. The light fixtures were originally gas lamps.” The central focus that catches everyone’s eye is the large mural that adorns the far end of the bar. It follows in line with a See grail on 35

THE WEIRS TIMES & THE COCHECO TIMES, Thursday, June 30, 2016 smith from 19

open to punish criminal offenders; whereby the lives and properties of the honest people of this colony are liable to the machinations and evil designs of wicked men, Therefore, for the preservation of peace and good order, and for the security of the lives and properties of the inhabitants of this colony, we conceive ourselves reduced to the necessity of establishing A FORM OF GOVERNMENT to continue during the present and unnatural contest with Great Britain; PROTESTING and DECLARING that we neaver sought to throw off our dependence upon Great Britain, but felt ourselves happy under her protection, while we could enjoy our constitutional rights and privileges. And that we shall rejoice if such a reconciliation between us and our parent state can be effected as shall be approved by the CONTINENTAL CONGRESS, in whose prudence and wisdom we confide. In establishing a constitution the members of the convention meeting in Exeter, which we might consider the capital town of the state in 1776, the members expressed the hope that differences with the Britain government could be resolved, making the new constitution but a temporary necessity, while making provision for its continuance if reconciliation did not occur. Note that they also subjected themselves to the will of the Continental Congress which would, six months later, declare independence from Great Britain. The Congress assembled in Exeter called themselves a House of

Representatives or Assembly and made provision for a separate legislative branch of government which would include twelve persons chosen by themselves ( that is, the House). This second branch was to be called a COUNCIL and would need a quorum of seven to do business. The Council members would be chosen from the separate counties, five from Rockingham , two from each of the counties of Stratford , Hillsborough, and Cheshire, and one from Grafton. The constitution stated “That no act or resolve shall be valid and put into execution unless agreed to and passed by both branches of the legislature.â€? The meeting of what is called a Provincial Congress had held previous meetings before the fifth congress was formed in December of 1775. According to Charles H. Bell’s History of Exeter, New Hampshire , it was â€œâ€Śto be composed of persons having real estate in the province to the value of five hundred pounds each‌â€?. I should include the fact that these New Hampshire citizens sought and received the advice of the Continental Congress

before adopting the first constitution by any of the colonies. A secret group of men called The Sons of Liberty (that may not have been very secret) led the country, including those in New Hampshire, in protesting the acts of Great Britain in taxing Americans. There were a group of laws passed in parliament called the Intolerable Acts which resulted in boycotts against British produced goods. On June 11, 1776 a committee consisting of members from the New Hampshire Representatives and the Council drew up Declaration of Independence which was adopted on June 15th according to Barstow’s History of New Hampshire. Their delegates to the Continental Congress, Josiah Bartlett, William Whipple, and Matthew Thornton were instructed to â€œâ€Śjoin with the other colonies , in declaring the thirteen united colonies a free and independent statesolemnly pledging our faith and honor, that we will, on our parts, support the measure with our lives and fortunes‌â€? They expressed confidence in the Congress to

provide for their safety with the addition of the statement: “Provided, the regulation of our own internal police be under the direction of our own assembly. The 1776 New Hampshire Constitution was replaced with a new one in 1784, but the expression of a colony that we might say started out with an identity crisis,

including boundary disputes and attachments to other states, to declare itself independent of those who would exercise oppressive rule over it, is significant. Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. live in New Hampton.

real reason. (Steph looked pretty healthy during the NBA Finals.) Irish golfing sensation Rory McIlroy was quite upfront about his decision to forego the new and intriguing Olympic Golf competition. It was all about the Zika. What a bummer. The return of golf to the Olympics has such promise, and the absence of McIlroy—one of the world’s best—diminishes the event.

in 2020 in Tokyo. As a Northern Irishman, McIlroy actually is a subject of Queen Elizabeth and the United Kingdom, as opposed to the Republic of Ireland, so he also has to deal with political pressure as well. But he’s lucky he plays a gentleman’s game where fans are quite respectful. If he were to have begged off his country’s national soccer team for fear of a mosquito then “futbol fans would never let him forget it. Zzzzzzzzft!

Sports Quiz The 1962 New York Mets finished 40-120, 24 games behind what other National League expansion team that season? (Answer follows)

Rom Swoboda of the 1969 Miracle Mets turns 72 this week. “Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk, nonetheless, and a risk I am unwilling to take, explained McIlroy (presently engaged to the PGA’s Erica Stoll—who perhaps influenced his decision). Rory is free to do as he pleases, and I’m free to opine that he is a sissyboy. Women are ostensibly at far greater risk, and very few have steered away. Someday he may regret his decision. But look for him to compete in Olympic golf

Sportsquiz Answer The Houston Colt 45’s (later the Astros) finished a relatively robust 64-96, placing them well ahead of the Mets AND the Chicago Cubs (59-103). Michael Moffett is a Professor of Sports Management for Plymouth State Univer-
