The Story of Kimball’s Castle
When the Lady of The Lake first began to haul passengers and freight
from Alton to Center Harbor the owner almost immediately began to realize great profits since there was no competition. This state of affairs came to the attention of Ben Kimball and other directors of the Concord and Montreal R.R. So that it was not surprising to discover that ownership of the ship had quietly passed to the Concord and Montreal. At that point the Boston Maine decided to join the fray and the DOVER, owned
by Boston Maine went into service. But Kimball’s line controlled the docking facilties at the Weirs and so held the upper hand until the B&M acquired a facility at Meredith. From then on it was a hot race… The Lady of The Lake vs. The Dover, the Chocorua and the Jim Bell. Competition got keener until the B&M determined to top it all off with a boat to end all competition... the Mt. Washington, the biggest and fastest thing on the
lake. It signaled the beginning of an era of rivalry which lasted eighteen years. Finally, the largest and fastest won out. In 1893, the Lady of the Lake made her final trip from Wolfeboro to the Weirs. In 1894 she was towed to Glendale where she was pulled up on the beach to provide living quarters for the workmen building Kimball’s Castle. Kimball’s Castle in Gilford has recently been in the news as the historic Lakes Region landmark has been declared unsafe and, according to town officials, must be torn down or enclosed by fencing. The following story is a compilation of past stories of the Castle in the Weirs Times as well as added recent history.

Kimball’s Castle in Gilford, NH. was built in 1899 by Benjamin Kimball and was once one of the Lake’s Region most spectacular views. Today, it sits abandoned and considered unsafe as it awaits its fate.
The Rotary Arts Pavilion at Henry Law Park is home to the popular ‘Shark in the Park’ summer lunch time concert series featuring popular rock bands from the Seacoast and the surrounding area. The 11th Annual Shark in the Park series, presented by The Shark 105.3 FM will take place on Thursday afternoons from Noon to 2pm and is designed to give downtown Dover residents and employees a chance to get outside during the summer months to enjoy concerts and the beautiful surroundings of the Rotary Arts Pavilion (corner of Washington St and Henry Law Ave). “The Full Monty” At The Barnstormers The Barnstormers 2013 season begins with “The Full Monty” an endearing musical in which a group of unemployed steel workers in Buffalo decide they have nothing to lose but their underwear, and nothing to gain but money (lots of it) on a one-night chance to take it off, take it all off. The journey that turns an average bunch of guys into male strippers offering the full monty is filled with high-energy song and dance, new and reawakened love and friendship, and the transformation that happens when you finally are willing to show what you’re made of. “The Full Monty” plays July 9 – 13th Tuesday-Thursday, 7:30pm, Friday & Saturday, 8pm and a Saturday Matinee at 2pm. How Many Is A Lot?

It’s been a pretty busy beginning of summer here in New Hampshire. I’m not sure if it’s any busier than the beginning of past summers; these things are hard to determine. At some point, somebody from some state agency will let us know exactly how busy it was and how busy it will be. About a week before the Fourth of July vacation week, or any vacation week, there will be some report out that will tell us how many people we should be expecting in the area. Just this morning I read this on the website of one of New Hampshire’s news stations. “Authorities are expecting over 860,000 people to visit over the Fourth Of July Weekend. (If you are watching on TV this is always said over an old video of a long line of traffic at the Hooksett tollbooth.) Just who are these authorities and how do they know? Why not 850,000 or 870,000? It’s pretty easy and you can do it too. They make it up. Think about it. When was the last time you heard or read this: “Authorities are expecting a very small number of people to visit the area this holiday weekend.� You see, these “authorities� are only in authority because their jobs, and beefy pensions, depend on good numbers visiting over
the holidays. What they are doing is merely wishing. Of course, if the numbers don’t quite match up to their initial expectations you might hear or read this: “Authorities blame overcast skies and the threat of a plague of locusts in keeping the holiday traffic lower than expected.� Of course, the New Hampshire Department of Travel and Tourism (NHDTT) is always praying for big crowds, especially now that they have unleashed their very expensive new marketing campaign. If you read this column on a regular basis, you know I don’t like it much. If you are unfamiliar, the campaign takes our proud state motto: “Live Free or Die� and cheapens it with a bunch of generic phrases like “Live Free and Splash “ and “Live Free And Giggle.� They are counting on some ads showing things like a few kids running through the woods with an inner tube or a father hugging his son by a waterfall to really pack ‘em in So, of course, no matter how many people are actually here this summer, you can be sure, by the end of it you will read we have had “record� crowds. It’s called job security. One of the benchmarks they use to determine this is how much they collect in rooms and meals taxes. This is the obnoxious nine percent tax that everyone pays in “tax free� New Hampshire when you go out to eat, stay in a hotel or buy a precooked BBQ chicken at the supermarket. It helps fund the NHDTT. So, the logic is, if there are more rooms and meals taxes collected, then there have been more visitors. But if the price of food is rising and more restaurants are forced to raise
their prices then wouldn’t the rooms and meals tax collected go up even with less people visiting? Just a thought. When it does get busy you will always hear that there were “record crowds� at a particular place like at the beach? Did someone count the people and did they compare it to a count someone did in years past? And if they did, how do they know they didn’t count some people twice. Did they ever get to say, 34,263, lose track and say “Oh shoot� and have to start all over? These are the kinds of things that keep me awake at night. Onions and peppers do as well. It seems to me that it is all a big guessing game. Every year we will be expecting record crowds for the Fourth; 300,000 will also be here Bike Week no matter what; Labor Day Weekend could be the busiest in years; so many millions of dollars will be spent. I take it all with a grain of salt and so should you. Medicaid Expansion To The Editor: Medicaid expansion is important to all of us. The federal government, which has demonstrated a time honored commitment to Medicaid since 1965, has agreed to pay 100% of the cost for the expansion for the first 3 years and 90% every year after that. The Lewin Group estimates that 58,000 more low-income adults will benefit from affordable, quality health coverage as a result of Medicaid expansion. This is a program that benefits New Hampshire. This program would be a win/win; there is something in this for everyone. Previously uninsured individuals and families would get the coverage that they so desperately need and by reducing their reliance on the emergency room for healthcare, which is both inefficient and very expensive; all taxpayers will save money. The Lewin group estimates that $2.5 billion in federal funds would be injected into the NH economy between 2014 and 2020, which would create 700 new jobs and boost salaries giving families more disposable income to spend on consumer goods instead of medical bills. This money has already been set aside for our use. If we do not take it, another state
will. Currently, New Hampshire sends more tax dollars to Washington, D.C. than we get back. Accepting the federal funds to expand Medicaid would help to ensure we are getting our fair share of services for our money. Paul Blackford Franklin, NH.

Do you think legalizing about 46 million, mostly
low-skilled uneducated immigrants in the next 20 years is a good idea? Do you think Congress should pass an immigration bill that the CBO says increases American unemployment? Do you think that Congress should pass an immigration bill that the CBO says lowers the average wage and wealth of most American? Do you think that rewarding 11 million people who broke our laws is a good idea? If you think these are good, then you will applaud the votes by Senators Ayotte and Shaheen. Do you like being intentionally deceived by false claims that there will be “enforcement first�, fines and back taxes, strict background checks, no access to welfare, and a deficit reduction? If so, then you will applaud the promises and votes by Senators Ayotte and Shaheen. If, like me, you think that the good of American workers is more important than that of immigrant law breakers, if you don’t like being the recipient of false promises, then I suggest you call Senators Ayotte and Shaheen immediately and tell them to vote “NO� on the “gang of eight� Comprehensive Immigration Bill. The Lakeside Living Expo returns to Gunstock Mountain Resort, Friday through Sunday, July 19-21st. The Lakeside Living Expo is returning to the spacious Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford, Friday through Sunday, July 19-21. The Expo is now the only show in New England that is entirely devoted to designer homes, lakeside retreats and great outdoor living. From The State House Tin Foil Hat Stuff? YOU Decide! Many constituents are now becoming more educated about the issue of sustainability and especially Granite State Future. I thought I by Rep. Jane Cormier would spend a Belknap District 8 little time digging out some facts about this sustainability plan and what I have discovered takes my breath away. I was under the impression that the regional planning commissions were supposed to work for the best interests of the people of New Hampshire, but what appears to be happening is they are just carrying water, and lots of it, for the Federal Government. Believe me, with what’s going on now in Wash-
ington DC, the LAST thing we need in New Hampshire is any advice or plans from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The “Cliff’s Notes” version of Granite State Future is all about SUSTAINABLE living. (When you see “sustainable” anything, be sure to read carefully!) Every part of the Federal Government has marching orders to implement “livability standards” via Executive Order #12852 signed by President Clinton back in 1993. This Executive Order formed the “President’s Council on Sustainable Development” (PCSD). The PCSD was formed to implement the written documents that resulted from the UN Conference on Environment & Development held in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 – 14, 1992. See cormier on 36
Rescuing Citizenship and Civic Virtue As we celebrate our nation’s 237th birthday, a crucial facet of American life has all but vanished. We have forsaken, in any systemby Michelle Malkin atic and delibSyndicated Columnist erate public manner, one of our most fundamental duties: fostering civic virtue in each and every one of our citizens. What does it mean to be an American? Politicians in both parties keep pushing to create a new “path to citizenship” for millions of illegal aliens. But if sovereignty and self-preservation still matter in Washington, citizenship must be guarded ferociously against those who would exploit and devalue it at every electoral whim. The pavers of the amnesty pathway think illusory requirements of paying piddling “fines” and back taxes will inculcate an adequate sense of responsibility and ownership in the American way. Other fair-weather friends of patriotism satisfy themselves with shallow holiday pop quizzes on American history to fulfill the “well-informed” part of the “well-informed citizenry” mandate of our Founding Fathers. But Thomas Jefferson said it well: “No government can continue good but under the control of the people; and ... their minds are to be informed by education what is right and what wrong; to be encouraged in habits of virtue and to be deterred from those of vice... These are the inculcations necessary to render the people a sure basis for the structure and order of government.”__ John Adams said it better: “Liberty can no more exist without vir-
tue ... than the body can live and move without a soul.” And Thomas Paine said it best: “When we are planning for posterity, we ought to remember that virtue is not hereditary.” Civic virtue cannot be purchased with token gestures or passed down in perfect form like a complete set of family china. A life of honor, honesty, integrity, selfimprovement and self-discipline is something you strive ever to attain. Being American is a habit of mind, but also a habit of heart and soul. Abraham Lincoln spoke of the “electric cord in that Declaration that links the hearts of patriotic and liberty-loving men together, that will link those patriotic hearts as long as the love of freedom exists in the minds of men throughout the world.” Calvin Coolidge, profiled in “Why Coolidge Matters,” a terrific new book by Charles C. Johnson, echoed the Founding Fathers’ emphasis on virtue, restraint and work ethic. “If people can’t support themselves,” he concluded, “we’ll have to give up self-government.” The failure of public schools to impart even rudimentary knowledge of self-government principles, natural rights theory and the rule of law is compounded by the suicidal abandonment of civic education. As Stanford University education professor William Damon notes: “Our disregard of civic and moral virtue as an educational priority is having a tangible effect on the attitudes, understanding and behavior of large portions of the youth population in the United States today.” Add militant identity politics, a cancerous welfare state, entitled dependence and tens of millions of unassimilated immigrants to the heap, and you have a toxic recipe for what Damon calls “societal See malkin on 34

Mystery of the Pyramids; Egypt’s Tortuous Path Ahead BENNINGTON, VT— T u m u l -
tuous events have swept Egypt as a passionate, but polarized, population took to by John J. Metzler the streets to Syndicated Columnist press for political change or to support the elected but increasingly authoritarian rule of President Mohammed Morsi. The culmination of the protests came with a massive turnout of millions of anti-Morsi Egyptians in Cairo, which when given the final push by the powerful military, swept the Morsi regime from office. Demonstrations in Cairo’s historic Tahrir Square, were marked by frenzied jubilation where fireworks, laser lights and party atmosphere looked a cross between New Year’s Eve and a soccer World Cup victory party. Not far away, throngs of dour but agitated minions of the Muslin Brotherhood seethed as power slipped from their clutches after only a year in power. Here rests the political and religious fault lines. Though an overwhelmingly Muslim land, a narrow majority of Egyptians are secular in their practice. These people see the increasingly heavy handed Muslim Brotherhood tactics as harmful. On the other side an equally large number of people view the once-banned Brotherhood as a religious mandate through which to rule. The country is divided, the situation is highly combustible. Though narrowly elected just a year ago, Morsi relied on his hard line Muslim brotherhood supporters to press for an increasingly Islamist agenda in this land of 84 million people. But beyond the politics of secular versus a fundamentalist religious regime, Morsi’s greatest failing was sheer socio/economic incompetence which saw the country rapidly eroding and falling prey to wider unemployment, higher crime, attacks on women, lower tourism, and nil economic growth. On the social side religious minorities such as the Coptic
Christians were harassed and attacked. Some 200,000 Christians have fled the country in the past few years. Secular political parties were increasingly harassed. Educated middle class people and business felt ostracized by their government. Over 22 million people signed a petition that Morsi step down. Sadly as Egyptian government intolerance of religious diversity grew, economic incompetence equally followed. In an age of technologically savvy opposition weaned on the revolution of expectations, the combination proved volatile. Egypt’s powerful and respected military has assumed power through a civilian technocratic government which aims at a new constitution and elections. A military role is nothing new; in July 1952, Colonel Gamal Nasser seized power in a coup d’etat and military rule of a secular but then Arab nationalist state became the norm until 2011. What began as the hopeful if naive Arab Spring demonstrations against the autocratic leadership of longtime president Hosni Mubarak in early 2011, saw the toppling of Mubarak, the slow but sure slip of Egyptian society from an Arab secular state close to the USA, into a increasingly fundamentalist future. For all its faults, the collapse of Mubarak’s rule posed a major geopolitical setback for the United States in the Middle East. Egypt, a pivotal American ally in the Arab world, began to drift into unknown political waters. The Obama Administration which presumed it could work with Morsi, nonetheless, and facing much Congressional unease, kept the American financial and military aid pipeline open to the Muslim Brotherhood rulers. Despite a polite relationship between Obama and Morsi, increasingly large numbers of Egyptians harbor negative feelings towards the USA. Ironically the Obama policies seem to have alienated both sides where secular Egyptians accuse Obama of a cozy relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood regime, and Morsi partisans who view
Washington as having condoned the military takeover. A new study, “Arab Spring adds to Global restrictions on Religion,” by the Pew Center for Religion and Public Policy, adds that Egypt has joined Saudi

The Mindset of the Left When teenage thugs are called “troubled youth” by people on the political left, that tells us more about the mindset of the left than about these young by Thomas Sowell hoodlums. Syndicated Columnist Seldom is there a speck of evidence that the thugs are troubled, and often there is ample evidence that they are in fact enjoying themselves, as they create trouble and dangers for others. Why then the built-in excuse, when juvenile hoodlums are called “troubled youth” and mass murderers are just assumed to be “insane”? At least as far back as the 18th century, the left has struggled to avoid facing the plain fact of evil -- that some people simply choose to do things that they know to be wrong when they do them. Every kind of excuse, from poverty to an unhappy childhood, is used by the left to explain and excuse evil.
All the people who have come out of poverty or unhappy childhoods, or both, and become decent and productive human beings, are ignored. So are the evils committed by people raised in wealth and privilege, including kings, conquerors and slaveowners. Why has evil been such a hard concept for many on the left to accept? The basic agenda of the left is to change external conditions. But what if the problem is internal? What if the real problem is the cussedness of human beings? Rousseau denied this in the 18th century and the left has been denying it ever since. Why? Self preservation. If the things that the left wants to control -- institutions and government policy -- are not the most important factors in the world’s problems, then what role is there for the left? What if it is things like the family, the culture and the traditions that make a more positive difference than the bright new government “solutions” that the left is constantly coming up with? Now this cannot stand. At the very second these two exhibited they were taking marching orders from Fox News that was it! To purposely hurt my country will not be tolerated. ******** U.S. Sen. MIKE JOHANNS served as Nebraska’s 38th governor from 1999 to 2005. As governor, he promoted an agenda of tax relief, less government, building the economy, protecting families, and ensuring the health, safety, and
success of Nebraska’s children. ******** SEN. JOHANNS: “Legal immigration is a proud part of our nation’s heritage and future. Immigrants to our country have played an important role in industries from agriculture to high-tech startups. HOWEVER, we are also a nation of laws. With an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living and working in the U.S., it is clear our current immigration system is broken. I agree with most Nebraskans that the solution begins with ensuring a truly secure border. Then – and only then – can we begin the process of addressing how to best deal with the undocumented immigrants already here. “The bill contains the promise of increased border security, but all that could be thrown out the door after 10 years if a single lawsuit stymies the implementation. Even the unions representing those tasked with enforcing our nation’s immigration laws said the bill will weakened national security and prevent them from doing their jobs. Because the legislation that passed the Senate did not ensure border security, I could not support it. “Furthermore, the legislation rewards most illegal immigrants with legal status and could provide them with TAXPAYER BENEFITS like Pell Grants, food stamps and Medicaid, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. “I understand the need for a solution, but unfortunately this bill was far short of what is needed. While the amendment requires additional border security measures before green cards are issued, it contains an exception
allowing the Secretary of Homeland Security to waive those security measures if any are delayed due to litigation at the end of the first 10-year window.� MORE quick hits from Sen. Johanns: “Gang members are not allowed to apply for legal status. However, the Secretary can waive this provision - Illegal immigrants who have committed three misdemeanors are ineligible for legal status under the bill, but the Secretary can waive the provision for humanitarian purposes, to ensure family unity, or if such a waiver is otherwise in the public interest - Language to make the employer verification system more robust and fight identity theft was not included in the amendment.� I will not take up space listing the 14 Republicans who stuck it to America by moving this AMNESTY legislation through the Senate. Some NH voters should remember include our own(?) Kelly Ayotte, the sweetheart of NH “moderates� John McCain, and the future of the GOP Marco Rubio – think first in the nation primary for president. Question: why do they refer to this anti-American legislation as “Immigration Reform�? ******** ANOTHER reason politicians concern me: Just in, “Sen. Marco Rubio is revving up an effort to REGAIN credibility among conservatives after his popularity took a nosedive over his stance on immigration reform, The Hill reports. Senate Republicans are aiding Rubio’s rehabilitation by allowing him to be the lead sponsor of a Senate bill that bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. See advocates on 34

was towed off Glendale and in 45 feet of water was sunk to the bottom... an ignominious finale for a grand Lady, but also the final stirring chapter of the railroads involvement on the Lake and the incidental battles for supremacy. It was during these years when Kimball was busy expanding the Concord and Montreal holdings on land and in the water’s of the Big Lake that he became familiar with the beauties of the area around Gilford. It must have occurred to him that from Locke’s Hill it would be a pleasant view to keep an eye on his marine activities while at the same time contentedly relish the chuff- chuff of his locomotives passing through Glendale. This might have been on his mind when on one of his trips to Europe, sailing down the Rhine River, he Became enamored of a Rhine Castle. He must have concluded that Locke’s Hill was just the place to build a similar Castle, for in a short time, architects were retained to duplicate the Rhine Castle and this time in Gilford. Work was started in 1897 and took two years to finish. Nothing was spared to make the Castle not only a fitting place for a railroad
Benjamin Kimball tycoon but also a pleasant place to spend part of each year from early Spring to Late October. As a perogative of the chief executive of one of New England’s most flourishing railroads, a spur was built from Lakeport to Dover and the name of the Concord and Montreal was changed to Concord Montreal and Lakeshore. One branch just happened to run past the construction site. Although much of the stone for the building proper came from Locke’s Hill and was hauled to the building by oxen, the cut parapet
stone was mined in Concord and came to the site on the new Lakeshore spur to Glendale. Interior woodwork and much of the iron work for decorative purposes came from England and Germany via boat to Boston, thence to Glendale on the Lakeshore spur. After the building was completed and living there settled into a regular summer routine, it just happened that the schedule for trains to Concord fit in nicely with Kimball’s schedule. His private car would be hooked on for the trip to his office and return at civilized hours. Ben was happy with “The Broads”, as he called it, looking out over the panoramic view he frequently queried his guests on “where in the world could one find a more superb view that lies before us?” Further as he looked across the Lake he could recall with satisfaction that back in the days when it counted he was right there with a piece of the action. The building site was seven hundred feet above

The parapets were cut granite slabs. The interior of the house presents a German flavor with most of the woodwork being of oak and the furniture of dark cherry. This scale replica of Kimball’s Castle can be seen at the Landmarks of NH Mini-Golf course at the Funspot Family Entertainment Center in the Weirs. It was built on 1968 by Fred Thompson of Conway working with measurements provided by Funspot owner, Bob Lawton, who went to the Castle to make sure the scale measurements were exact. house and servants quarters are late Romanesque and early gothic. There is a complete kitchen with servants quarters in a separate wing. A great stone porch stretches entirely across the lake side of the building. According eminent local historian Gilbert Center, in 1906 Mr. Kimball changed the appearance of the famous landmark by applying a coat of white paint to the stone castle. There is no record of how well this was received by local castle watchers of the time. Outside there is a gardeners cottage, several car garages, a workshop and other associated build-
ings. In all, the property comprised about 280 acres with as much as 100 acres maintained and landscaped. Steps stretched away from the castle down the hill toward the lake. One of Mr. Kimball’s pleasures was to visit the gardens and rest on his way down the hill. So far as is known Mr. Kimball never made any effort to participate in the affairs of the Town or to become involved socially with area neighbors or acquaintances. Benjamin Ames Kimball died in July of 1920 at the “Broads” in Gilford at the See castle on 15

Don Minor stands by the massive rudder of The Lady Of The Lake (upper right), the steamboat owned by Benjamin Kimball which was retired in 1894 and used as living quarters for the workmen building Kimball’s Castle. It was later sunk in 45 feet of water. Minor acquired the rudder in the 1990s and recently donated it to the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum in the Weirs where it is now on display. A future article will give a more comprehensive story. The Museum is located on Rte 3, between Meredith and Weirs Beach, next door to the Funspot Family Entertainment Center. The Museum is open Monday thru Saturday from 10am to 4pm. castle from 14
age of 86. The estate remained with the family until 1960 when Charlotte Kimball, Benjamin’s daughter-in-law and last heir, died. The estate was willed to the Alvord Wild Life Sanctuary of Bear Island. It was felt that if the public wished the castle and its 250 acre park of flowers and shrubs restored and preserved for their study, the society was the most likely to inherit this fine property for proper restoration. After being abandoned for several years, the inevitable finally happened; vandalism! What could be carried, was stolen, windows broken, wrought iron that wasn’t too heavy, removed; stacks of very rare green bullseye glass replacements from the windows, smashed: even the huge stone and wrought iron gates five
feet high, were eventually destroyed. The preserve was never created and in 1981 the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office took control of the land and offered it to the Town of Gilford if they could save the Castle and create the preserve. Various town committees studied the site for years but voters decided they did not want town money spent restoring the Castle. Finally, the Attorney General threatened to take the property back if the Town did not make some progress. In 1990 the Town convinced the Attorney General that the best way to carry out the goals of Charlotte Kimball’s will was to remove the stipulation against commercial development on the land surrounding the Castle and subdivide it off. The Town then created the Locke’s Hill Nature

In 2001 the Castle was bought, according to town records, by Kimball Castle Properties, LLC, This year, the Gilford selectman and the town’s building inspector have determined that the structure is not safe and that the owners are responsible in remedying the situation. Tim’s And Rod’s Excellent Sports Road Trip Adventure! On the Road is a classic 1950s novel by New England writer Jack Kerouac. It’s based on the travels of Kerouac and his friends across America. Traveling the country “in search of America� is not unusual, although the search often turns out to be more about finding one’s own identity than about sight-seeing or having fun. (Recall the classic “Road Trip!� scenes from the 1978 movie Animal House.) So in the spirit of Jack Kerouac and the Delta Brothers of Animal House, NHTI-Concord students Tim Martin and Rod Malone recently took off and hit the road, in search not of America, but of sports action. “With a new baby due in September, I wanted to get in another summer baseball trip,� explained Martin. “Earlier trips took me to many Major League parks including PNC in Pittsburgh, The Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati and Camden Yards in Baltimore. This year Rod and I figured it was time to get to Chicago.� Chicago meant seeing the Cubs at Wrigley Field in the afternoon, and the White Sox at US Cellular Field in the evening. So Tim got up before 3am. one June day and drove south from Laconia, first picking up Rod and then heading south on a neardeserted I-93 to make it to

NHTI-Concord students Tim Martin and Rod Malone outside Wrigley Field in Chicago. Boston Logan Airport in time to catch a 7am. flight to Chicago. Once in the Windy City, the Granite Staters made their way to the Billy Goat Tavern and procured some tickets for that day’s Cubs-Reds game. “Being a Red Sox fan at Wrigley field was amazing,� said Tim. “I looked for Red Sox savior Theo Epstein, now the Cub General Manager, but he was nowhere to be seen. We sat on the third base line about 20 rows up. Seeing the Ivy on Wrigley’s walls for the first time was special. Wrigley took us back in time to when baseball was the only game in town and the best place to be was in the stands scoring a game. No giant electronic scoreboards at Wrigley, but they did have an oldfashioned organ.� The Reds’ 2-1 victory confirmed Martin’s preference for National League action. “NL ball is still pure,� Tim observed. “I think that a game should only take two hours and pitchers should hit. If pitchers throw at someone in the NL then also they have to face the music at the plate themselves!� After the White Sox game was cancelled due to weather, Tim and Rod had to go to Plan B— getting into Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals at the United Center, where
the Black Hawks hosted the Boston Bruins. The NH boys had to spend some money, but they got tickets on opposite sides of the arena, and watched Chicago overcome a 3-1 Boston lead and eventually triumph in triple overtime. “Easily the best sporting event I’ve ever been to,� said Tim. “But the game got over so late we skipped going to a hotel and went straight to Midway Airport for a 6am flight to New York to see a Mets game.� Despite the weather Tim and Rod made it to the Big Apple and then to Citi Field, where the Mets hosted the St. Louis Cardinals. “Citi Field is great,� offered Tim. “The Mets couldn’t decide whether they wanted a throwback park or something more modern. But it was a fantastic place to watch a game. The Jackie Robinson Rotunda is a wonderful entryway. The park has interesting dimensions and fantastic food.� Martin is a reliable food critic, as he works as a chef when not taking Sports Management classes at NHTI. After the Cardinals won the game 2-1, Rod and Tim went to Times Square and then hung out at Penn Station. Eventually, they caught a train to Boston and returned to Beantown See moffett on 18

way in Loudon this weekend. On Saturday, July 13 the “Magic Mile� will host the Town Fair 100 at 1 p.m. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is a staple at NHMS. The modifieds have raced there 57 times in its 23 years of existence. Then on Sunday the track will host the nationally-televised New England 200 at 3:30pm. And Tim Martin will be there as well, working as a NHMS event intern. His department deals with all of the events apart from the race itself, including a “Game Show� which will be played on the front stretch of the track before the Sunday’s Sprint Cup Race. Tim will also help coordinate the presentation of colors, the American anthem, the Canadian anthem, the bands outside of the track and numerous pre-race ceremonies from Thursday through Sunday. Dr. Shepard is the Artistic Director of the Worcester Chorus in Worcester, Massachusetts, Music Director of the Hotchkiss Summer Portals Chamber Music Program for young players and singers from around the world, the Music Director of the Dessoff Choirs in New York City and Guest Choral Director at the College of the Holy Cross for the 20122013 school year. The 2013 season will be the 19th for the Great Waters Music Festival and the third season at the Kingswood Arts Center. Ask The Builder Think Of Poured Concrete Walls As Structural Beams by Tim Carter

DEAR TIM: I’m building a new home and visited the jobsite a few days ago. I was aghast at a possible defect in my foundation. Parts of the concrete foundation are suspended in midair and I feel they’ll crack off years from now. These walls are only about 4 feet tall and intersect taller 8-foot high concrete walls at a 90-degree angle. Should I be concerned? Why did this happen? What’s the correct way to build this foundation? --Jim Marshall, Lawrenceburg, Ind. DEAR JIM: I’ll never forget the first house I built. I had a similar situation confront me where the attached garage foundation walls had to connect with the foundation walls of the home. As you can imagine, a hole had to be dug larger than the foundation of the home so the workers could set the panels for the foundation. When one foundation wall must intersect with a deeper wall, you can see how it has to span over the hole to make the connection. The owner of the foundation company was also a structural engineer. He taught me on that job that poured concrete walls are actually structural beams. To help you visualize this, think about the horizontal steel I-beams you see as a skyscraper is being built. These horizontal Ibeams connect with just large nuts and bolts to the vertical steel columns. These bolts are made with very strong steel, but keep in mind that all the weight that rests on the horizontal beams is transferred to

A portion of this new concrete foundation appears to be suspended in midair. Is this a defect or not? the vertical steel columns that extend down to the earth. Your foundation is basically the same situation. The smaller foundation wall that’s only 4 feet tall is a beam. It has air under it just like a steel I-beam on a skyscraper. You’ve got nothing to worry about as long as the concrete foundation contractor did a few simple things. Just like the steel I-beams connect to the vertical steel columns with special bolts, your foundation walls need to connect properly with the taller walls with some steel. In my case, all those years ago at my first house, my concrete contractor installed four 1-inch thick steel rods that extended back into the shorter garage wall about 10 feet. These rods were bent at a 90-degree angle and extended about three feet either direction into the taller poured basement wall of the house. Once all the steel in the walls was surrounded by the wet concrete and it hardened, the two walls were connected just like the nuts and bolts connect horizontal steel beams to vertical steel columns. I looked closely at the
photo you sent me. I can see your foundation contractor also added a concrete column to support the end of this wall where it connects to the taller basement foundation wall. This poured column extends down to the footer below so you’re in good shape. The key thing is to make sure you have horizontal steel rods in the shorter wall like I had on my first home. The rods can be as small as 5/8-inch

President Clinton’s PCSD took six years to impregnate all of the branches of government with the principals of this UN Rio Earth Summit – (what?!). HUD has been able to force feed these principals into the states using grant candy. (Never forget that “free money” carrot, folks!) A massive $3M-plus Federal Grant was awarded to the Nashua Regional Planning Commission (NRPC) back in late February of 2012. The NRPC was acting as the lead planning commission with HUD and convinced the other eight NH Regional Planning Commissions to join, each getting a spoonful of money from the HUD honey pot. And of course, that Federal money comes with far-reaching tentacles which reach into our communities, making policy which is not “of the people”. The hundreds and hundreds of pages of this grant, which is a legally binding contract between HUD and the nine NH regional planning commissions, contain significant mandatory outcomes. Since the NH regional planning commissions accepted this grant money, Granite
State Future is the linkage between the Federal government implementing local policy all under the guise of sustainability and conservation. Now I ask you, what does the Federal government know about New Hampshire? Why would the people of New Hampshire want the Federal government telling us what to do with our land and our water? I’m absolutely certain that the citizens of New Hampshire can make their own prudent planning decisions without any input whatsoever from HUD. Why do we assume these bloated programs will do a better job of being good custodians of NH resources? There are very serious liberty issues here which need to be addressed openly and honestly. And it is definitely NOT “tin foil hat” stuff. Not by a long shot. I was elected to office to represent my constituents. The same is true for the other House Representatives, the NH State Senators, our Executive Council and our Governor. All of us were elected to represent you. But, the documents concerning the Granite State Future clearly show that
we - your elected officials - don’t have any say whatsoever about what happens with the plans that are created by the Granite State Future. That means YOU don’t have an ACTIVE voice at the table. Those wonderful “Listening Sessions” hosted by GSF seek to appease these concerns, but the truth is, our voice at this moment is being MUTED. And that is completely unacceptable. Tell me, do you want unelected officials making decisions about your land, your water and how you live here in New Hampshire? I certainly don’t. We can do better. My next three columns will deal with more information regarding GSF and Sustainable Living. In the meantime, I urge you to visit a website which offers the TRUE facts about this planning initiative: www.GraniteStateFutures.org. And don’t worry too much about the “tin foil hat” label. That label is there to silence those who dissent. I promise it won’t silence me. Please, don’t let it silence you!
